Ruqqaiya, Rania and Layan didn't get punished for bullying Mariam. They got punished for sending a picture to a boy, sneaking out past curfew to go to a party, and bunking school to meet a boyfriend. These are ordinary and harmless teenage behaviours. And after the consequences of Mariam's revenge, still nobody knows the truth of what went down, nobody knows what the bullies did to her and that she did not assault Layan in the changing room. In the world's eyes they have become eternal victims, and Mariam's story is still unknown except that now she's also a villain and a monster.
This is the only place where Mariam went wrong. She wasn't wrong to want revenge imo, she wasn't wrong to want to teach those girls a lesson once and for all. Bullying is no joke, and the kind of bullying that happened on this show can even lead to suicide. Since the start I supported Mariam because I saw it as the stronger thing to do to tackle her bullies head on instead of simply continuing to emdure them silently, and letting them have their way around school. But, the things she did to get her revenge were wrong. She set out to get them punished for things that society looks down on women for doing but allows men to do as much as they please. She could've thought of a different plan to get revenge for the bullying, and then she wouldn't have become what she became by the end.
Although, I've got to say that maybe Mariam didn't know how bad her bullies' families were. She had wanted in each case maybe to just humiliate them or get them a little shouted at, like what happened to her after Layan's acussation that Mariam groped her. Mariam was defamed, her parents didnt believe her, and she was forced to go to therapy. But, by sending her to therapy her parents trued to help her. They were ashamed but they didn't get violent, and from their point of view as parents who believed their daughter had assaulted someone, they did the best thing by sending her to therapy. Mariam came from a good family, and maybe that's why she couldn't imagine how differently other families would react to defamation of this kind. She didn't think that Ruqqaiya's mom would pull her out of school, or that Rania's dad would give her a black eye instead of a simply shouting at her. And imagine if instead of Layan, Dina had bunked school to meet a boyfriend, and instead of Hazem it had been Dina's brother who had caught his sister in the act. I don't believe that Dina's brother, who casually said "hi Mariam, hi Dina's friend who I've never met" when the girls were at Dina's unexpectedly, would have even thought about shooting her. He would have only been worried and scolded her for bunking, which is a more normal persons reaction. It is possible that Mariam didn't know it could end the way it did. And the real villains of the story are most definitely the families of the bullies, not Mariam. However even coming from a bullied schoolgirl's perspective, Mariam's revenge was badly performed because of the things she did, and ultimately she did use the patriarchal standards of society to carry it out, even if she only wanted to get them caught and slightly scolded.
