I love reading the studies on potential existence beyond or outside of the body. I hate how much some of those books drone on before getting to the point.
#rant#1 hit me up if you want book names#2 i read one about research on existence after death. but a philosopher wrote it :/#so despite mentionung studies he just ranted about his philosphical proof. which fine... convince another philosopher i guess :/#but as a philosophical arguement i found it Annoying and not as useful to me the reader as a#more scientist structured discussion of the research would have been.#meanwhile theres some great books featuring equations. so Mathematical proofs for a concious universe#but 1 book spends 400 pages on experiments (cool but i wouldve liked math FIRST) then 100 pages of math and explanation#another book has math only and its 90 pages and probably my favorite theory on how the universe works#then theres an overview of experiements book. in soviet union#but its from an american tourist writer :/ so at least 60% of the text is stupid tourist Description bullshit#i dont want an Exagerated journal of adventures bitch. i want to hear what the research and outcomes and equations and evidence is!!!!#and youtube lectures? a lot of good ones on ted talks and some university youtube lectures#but theyre for general audiences so they often avoid mentioning the math (since the audience wouldnt necessarily Get the mathematical theory#) which annoys me because I WANT TO SEE THEIR MATHEMATICAL THEORY#i want them to SPECIFY WHICH OF THE BOOKS THEY WROTE IS MATHEMATICAL OR PHYSICS HEAVY IN DESCRIBING THIS STUFF#i can read physics. let me!!!! let me look at ur fucking theory so i can form a better opinion on it!!!

Hey there!! Love your blog. What do you recommend for someone who is NOT a math or sciences talent, but definitely wants to learn more? Any resources or ideas? Thanks!
Ahh thank you!!! Sorry this took ages to reply to, I wanted to give myself a few days to think of things and then I ended up thinking too much anyway now it’s probs 2 weeks later ooops but I’m here now!!! <3
Specifically for physics, there are loads of really good documentaries, books and podcasts around. One of my lecturers is a p famous TV presenter (Big up Brian Cox, big love for him. I held a door open for him once....it was awesome), but he has loads of different books, documentaries and does a podcast too. I’ll throw some pop maths books in there too because there’s lots of fun stuff in those! I’ve included links where I could find them!
Some books:
The Forces of Nature
The Quantum Universe
Why does E=mc²?
How many socks make a pair? - So this one is more to do with everyday maths and I promise it’s just full of really fun cool facts and lil experiments that you can try out yourself with newspapers and bits and bobs
Fermat’s Last Theorem - Another mathsy one but it just talks about the history of maths going way way back, and kinda explains the origin of a lot of things. If you like history, you’ll like this book. And ofc it tells us the story of Fermat’s Last Theorem.
The Feynman Lectures on Physics - These lecture notes are more like the stuff I study at degree level, but if you wanna browse the categories for topics that you wanna look into this might be a good place to start. The contents page shows the structure of how a lot of physics links up. Richard Feynman gave a series of lectures to undergrads at CalTech I think in the 60s? These are the notes from those. His goal was to make degree level physics as understandable as possible.
Does God Play Dice? - this book v much cemented by thirst for studying physics at uni. There’s just a load of cool stuff in there :)
Some podcasts:
The infinite monkey cage
TED Talks often have some really good science talks to flick through. Some ones I have enjoyed have been:
http://www.ted.com/playlists/mind_bending_questions_from_ph
http://www.ted.com/playlists/robert_simpson_s_playlist
https://www.ted.com/talks/nick_pizzo_the_physics_of_surfing
https://www.ted.com/talks/richard_feynman_physics_is_fun_to_imagine
https://open.spotify.com/episode/6ylFeTLzyyvyl91OhNSR36?si=2zamyJY3TbOzhXrBOsCDlw about nuclear incidents and the politics and science behind!
Some documentaries:
Wonders of the universe
Wonders of the solar system
Horizon documentaries have a lot about like big events in history and a load of scientific ones too so its defo worth looking through. Available on BBC iPlayer!
Documentary about Richard Feynman that I watched once and really enjoyed
MinutePhysics do good Youtube vids about bits and bobs that are physicsy
3blue1brown also do similar stuff but a lil more advanced
Hope these give you something to start with! Anyone else please add bits and bobs to create a lil masterlist :)

Evaluation
Overall I believe we had a strong performance. Our rehearsals leading up to our performance were strong and we felt very confident going into the performance. I felt at the the time that the material we were working with was strong. Linking to work that we had discussed with Helena and Tom. Who’s this for? Who’s story being told ?was a consistent thought within our work. We felt that combining sections of auto biographical and biographical script would although us some variety as well as a way to bring us to gather as group with something that we have in common with each other. We knew our audience would be drama students so using our own biographical sections played by each other would allow us to connect with the audience but also have weight to the lines we were speaking due to the respect that we had for each other. Then when we were thinking about who’s story is not being told we thought of people that we could connect with our ideas of “Dreams” with people outside of university. University can often feel like a bubble constantly living in the moment of our lives potentially never thinking how far down the line in the future. So thinking of older people's dreams would be a good way to connect our ideas together. I also believe visually during our performance we encouraged a lot of experimentation in our online performance. Firstly we incorporated elements of a multimedia into our piece. We used a animation during of performance which I thought offered a variation from a normal acting as well as thematically relating to the idea “age” in our piece, the idea of our dreams changing as we grow up, and the use of cartoons or animations linking back to the idea of youth and cartoons often inspiring our dreams from a young age. Also not as effective but still good use stylised performance, our use of bubbles and gallons help carry visual and thematic advantages. The bubbles linked back to that childlike nature of our piece but also represents the idea of “Eve’s bubble being popped”. However in my opinion this prop did not reach its visual potential. The bubbles were difficult to see on camera, difficult to create enough bubbles and also to try and not cover our laptops in soap. But the balloons we used were quite effective, the barons were thematically relevant and worked well as being visually interesting to watch. Overall these elements were incorporated to give a sense of liveness to our piece incorporating the ideas of using off the frame of the screen and ensuring all dialogue was spoken to the camera, giving the feeling of direct address.
Influences
When we first began work on this project we all came to the conclusion that we wanted to work with auto/biographical work. We came to this conclusion within the first two weeks or so of work. During our first meeting we established a common thing between all of us as a group that we could then begin working. We came to that common factor being our love of Drama. From there we began to ask ourselves a question that we had taken away from Tom Marshman’s lectures “who’s story is not being told”. From there we looked into the current events of how the subject of drama is lacking attention from the government. This was highly influenced by the recirculation of the governments old “Fatima retrain advert”. Although this advert was not a response by the government to the covid crisis it still echoed how many felt this is how the government was reacting. From this we began to focus our piece on the difficulties of being involved in the creative arts industry. This suggestion on focusing on sociopolitical issues reflected some influences of Brecht is that we initially discussed in our group, discussing the idea of including a didactic message in our piece as a response to the lack of response by the government to the arts industry. However we discussed the idea of “who’s story is being told” and the ethical issues of potentially taking someone’s words and using them for our own kind of message and ideology.
When of the teachings that we had pick up from Helaans lectures were the idea of “letting the testimony’s speak”. This inspired us to make sure our piece was more focused on the stories and ideas being spoken by ordinary people rather than having something overall complicated going theatrically
Research
First step of our research into our subject was looking into how the arts are viewed in politics. We first started looking into the advertisement that launched us into the topic of our piece , “Fatimas next job could be cyber”. This was the first thought that came to mind when we discussed the idea of lack of government support for the arts. Originally this advert was part of a restraining campaign from when cannot be identified, so although the ad was not part of any suggestion by the government to retrain due to covid it still felt to many as a kick in the teeth and a reflection of the government’s response to the arts during lockdown. What hit even harder was the original artist behind the photograph named Krys Alex, who was unaware her art was to be used in advert. According to a BBC news article Krys commented on the resurgence of the ad,”"I was shocked," the Atlanta-based photographer said in a YouTube video. Artists "should not be encouraged to stop doing what we love", she added.” "I woke up Monday morning to a bunch of emails and tags, and I really felt devastated," she said. "I immediately thought of Desire'e and how her face was just plastered all over social media and the internet, different news articles, and memes were created, and she had no clue. All of that really hurt me. We found this resonates with us quite quickly and acted as almost a mission statement for us, the government took Krys art and used it against her wishes, as such we would not do the same to anyone’s testimony.
During one of our major rehearsals we discussed to move away from mainly just the subject of Drama and the struggles in our industry to shifting focus on something that is a much more relatable subject, that one being one of achieving your dreams versus the way reality treats your dreams and aspirations. From there we discussed going away and doing our own certain research. What we came with was Ted talks from British author advisor on education in the arts to governments . Ken Robison discusses the idea of why the creative arts are not taught like other subjects. This helped provide a starting point in our piece as well as a major talking point we wanted to focus on. We wanted to slowly show the progression of dreams over a human life. But the talking point we wanted to focus on was the influence of education on our dreams, in relation to drama inside of education.
This led to us conducting research of how the arts are viewed in politics. We found articles that discussed the lack of support by the government during lockdown according to Art Review “There has been a 37 percent fall in entries for arts subjects at GCSE over the past decade.”and “The National Campaign for the Arts’ Arts Index 2020 report calculated a 43 percent fall in local authority arts funding from 2007 to 2018.” This was not helped by the fact that the “Cultural Recovery Fund is worth £1.57 billion.” This was a key sectioll
We also looked into drama at university how university students were dealing with the current lockdown. This section of the script came from research into how universities have been adjusting drama for new online learning and a personal place for me of not being able to enjoy the course I paid for and used to truly love.
Rehearsal Diary
Entry 1)
I would say the earliest rehearsal that was of our project was I think was around two weeks into our groups being formed. Within our first meeting we had decided upon a certain topic and style. However during our second meeting and rehearsal we expanded upon the idea of focusing on the difficulties of being a part of the creative arts. This is due to the resurgence of the fatimas advert as well as the government's response to the creative arts during the pandemic. This expanded into us all having a discussion of the difficulties of doing drama, whether to it be because of our education and how that related to drama or in Eve’s case a genuinely harmful experience during a performance. As we spoke to Helena we discussed the idea of moving away from a piece soupy focused on drama and instead focused on human nature and it’s Tesla toon to how our dreams change and how reality affects us from achieving our dreams. This then moved onto us discussing ideas of how to gain testimony.
Entry 2
After our previous rehearsal we went away and discussed ideas of how to gain testimony. We decided upon using a questionnaire as it would allow us to gain large amounts of testimony in a short period of time and would allow for a large amount of variation, some responses being short and brief, whereas others would be long and detailed. But this would be beneficial to us and it could potentially control the pace of our script. Overall thinking of questions was difficult as we wanted to balance complex questions of “what does a dream mean to you”, “what would you be if you could achieve your dream and trying to balance questions of dreams with questions to do with the creative arts and education. Finally this rehearsal concluded with us settling on questions we would use to then interview each other.
Entry 3
After our meeting with Helana after we had completed our interviews with each other and demonstrated the testimony we felt like we were in the right track we only had to wait for the rest of the questionnaires to be completed. After said questionnaires were completed we moved onto structuring the script and thinking of what else we could include. Because we had got a variety of responses from teenagers to adults we decided to structure our piece in terms of age. We first started by including voice recordings of young kids being asked what they want to be when they grow up, a relatable question that we would play at the start. We then focused on growing up in drama as a teenager talking about the times we have felt encouraged or discouraged about our dreams. During the adult portion of the pice we discussed the idea of using animation to break up the performance. Finally Angel spoke of Grandma being in the arts industry so we decided to take that as part as the elderly representation in the performance.
Entry 4
Our final critical rehearsal I would say would be our final tech rehearsal. This rehearsal was important as even though we were very stressed about all the technical aspects of our performances going well but in actuality we need to focus on the smaller physical aspects of our performance and we needed to go away and work on it.

College. It’s a lot to handle, especially if you’re completely new to the whole thing. First, it’s hard to adjust to classes and the academic rigor of college, and adding an additional ten or so stressors of “adulting” makes it a whole lot harder to control. So, to help everyone not struggle and not be as confused as I was, I collected a few websites and apps that I liked to use and I found super helpful!
Note: All of websites that I linked below are free to use! There are some websites that have additional benefits that may cost money, but otherwise all of the apps and websites I listed here are 100% free! (because every college student needs a little help financially).
Academic: Work, Work, Work, Work, Work, Work -Rihanna (My Queen)
1. RateMyProfessor: Every college student’s best friend. This website allows students at your college/university rate a professor on different things, like difficulty, interest, etc. Don’t let this be the end all be all though for choosing a class. Get to know more about the professor from other people on campus, as everyone has a different opinion on a professor. You never know who you might end up liking as a professor, so get to know what you like and who they are.
2. Dropbox: Basically like an online flash drive if you don’t feel like taking around a flash drive. Super helpful in storing stuff and makes it a whole lot easier to move from one device to another.
3. Google Drive: If you don’t like Dropbox, Google Drive can also work in this way, and more. Google Drive is super helpful, especially when you need to work on group projects, etc. in college, since you and your group can work on a document together. Sometimes I used Google Drive to make a giant study guide that me and my friends all contributed to before an exam, and it was a great way to review/study together and get a feel of how they interpret different things we learned in lecture.
4. PurdueOwl: Got a paper to write? No matter what you write in college, or in any field, make sure you cite all your material! It is SUPER IMPORTANT to make sure you cite everything and anything you use. There are a ton of websites that do it for you, but I like using PurdueOwl as a guide to making my own citations because a lot of the other websites mess up on citations. The guide allows you to cite in different things like MLA, APA, etc. Overall, its pretty cool and I recommend using it :)
5. Google Scholar: If you need to find peer-reviewed, journal articles (i.e. especially for research papers), Google Scholar is a great place to start and find different sources, and even help you branch off and find other places to find journal articles
6. WordCounter: I think there’s a word counter on Word too, but I use this website to get a feel on other things, like the words that I may use too often during papers, etc. I think its helpful for an initial review of your word count.
7. HemmingWayApp: If you want to improve your paper on different things like sentence structure, readability, etc. I really love using this to improve my writing!
8. PaperRater: This website allows you to basically grade your paper on a general scale. This might not be super accurate, but I like using it to get a general idea on my paper. I mainly use it on its other features, like checking my spelling, grammar, and word/sentence structure strength.
9. Grammarly: Speaking of grammar, this website (it is also a google chrome/other internet browser extension) checks your grammar and strength for papers. Not only are you able to check papers, with the extension, you’re able to check your grammar and sentence/word strength as you write different things on your browser, like on emails to your professor (which is really important). I haven’t used it a ton, but I heard a ton of great reviews from people and a lot of people I know recommend it, so I thought I would include it here!
10. Khan Academy: Literally every college student’s savior. If you haven’t heard of Khan Academy by now, it is a great website to help when you’re having difficulty learning a certain topic, or if you just want some more reinforcement while you study. It’s free, so I highly recommend.
11. TEDEd: This is an amazing website that I absolutely love using (It is also a youtube channel!). It is not only super helpful in learning information for classes, but also really useful for learning new things too. I also recommend Ted Talks (they are good for the soul!) YouTube Channel:  https://www.youtube.com/user/TEDEducation
12. Youtube: Even though Youtube may seem like something just for entertainment, there are parts of Youtube that are really helpful in learning and studying for exams and classes. Not only can you use it to learn and study, but also researching and planning things for the future, like preparation for job interviews, internships, etc. I am a Behavioral Neuroscience major (which is basically a Neuroscience major), so I have more background with science, so I recommend Crash Course for a basic overview of things, Bozeman for a more in depth science review (I used it for Biology), Tyler Dewitt for Chem review, Sci Show for general science information, and for everyone, I recommend Ted-Ed/Ted Talks. There are also a ton of college youtubers/youtube channels, so I recommend watching them for advice as well!
13. Duolingo: Whether you are studying for a class/exam or just want to learn a language for fun, Duolingo is a great way to get started. I remember watching a great Ted Talk on learning languages, so this is a great starting point to learning. Of course, if you really want to learn a language, getting first hand exposure is the best way in my experience.
14. Quizlet: For all of you flashcard users, this is, of course, a great website to make your own! I personally don’t use flashcards often, but if they work for you, I recommend using this, since its fast and also utilizes the real reason why flashcards work, which is the fact that you write your own (because writing your own flashcards actually makes the information stay in your brain!).
Networking: “Hi My Name is…”
1. WayUp: This website allows you to find jobs, internships, externships, etc. that are in your area. Personally, I haven’t used it yet, but I know a lot of people recommend using this to find internships and jobs to get connections and to set yourself up professionally.
2. LinkedIn: Another website to build yourself professionally (this website is more similar to an online resume rather than a website to find jobs and internships)
Books: Stacks on Stacks on Stacks (of Textbooks, R.I.P.)
1. BigWords: I really like this website to look at first before I rent or buy my textbooks (I mainly rent). This is a great website to use, since it shows all the different websites and the different prices for that specific book you are looking for. A lot of people also use Slugbooks, but I like to use this website (its more of what your preference is, both of these websites are very good and I have heard good reviews for both).
2. Amazon: Most of you know about Amazon, but I wanted to include it here because I actually rented most of my textbooks from Amazon. I found it to be the best option and I always had a good experience with it. PLUS, if you don’t know, as a student, you get a free 6 month trial of Amazon Prime!. Go Two Day Shipping for 6 months (and its free, take advantage of those discounts while you still have them!)
Financial Aid: The Ultimate How-To
There are a ton of websites that are essential to financial aid and figuring out how financial aid/paying for college works. If you are a little confused on financial aid, I also made a post about that here, or if you are confused on different terms associated with financial aid or college in general, I suggest clicking here. Financial Aid is a little confusing and scary, but knowing a little more and knowing what websites to use goes a long way.
1. FAFSA: This is the website where you apply for federal financial aid. Make sure, if you don’t click on the link here and you google it, it says “.gov” because that is the official website. FAFSA is a free application, so if they even ask for money at the end of the application, its not the real thing.
2. CSS Profile: This link allows you to apply for institutional financial aid if your school provides or requires it. Click here to check what colleges/universities accept the CSS Profile.
3. Net Price Calculator: Here, depending on what school you attend, you are able to calculate the total cost of attendance for your college/university
Discounts: Money, Money, Money!
Note: the websites listed here are just websites to use for things like online shopping. However, there are many stores that, when you show your student ID (ex: Apple), you get a ton of discounts, so I recommend looking up different stores that do just that!
1. UniDays: This website has a ton of discounts on different things such as clothes, technology, etc. It is more geared towards online shopping, since the discounts/coupons typically have codes to use, so if you online shop quite often, I recommend this website!
2. StudentRate: Another website with discounts for online shoppers. However, unlike the UniDays website, you can use the discounts in store as well. I personally haven’t used this, but once again, I heard great things about this website and plan on using it soon!
Managing Finances: Check Yo Self!
1. Mint: This is a website/app that I use often! This app allows you to add cards, bank accounts, etc. in order to look and manage your account. This app also lets you budget out your money for different expenses, which I highly recommend doing. Money is important and it is also something that can go away like that if you don’t watch and budget it carefully. Therefore, I really recommend using an app to help you do this.
2. Venmo: This app lets you transfer money to different people, whether you owe money to someone else and are giving it back or you are getting money as well. From my experience, a lot of people use Venmo in college because it is easier to transfer money from person to person, whenever you owe someone money. I have used it before and it is good to use.
Lifestyle: It’s A Balancing Act!
1. Shoptagr: This is your typical shopping website where you can add items that you like and also keeps track/notifies you when an item is back in stock. This is also an internet extension.
2. KeepMeOut: This is a website where you are able to enter a website that may be distracting and then notifies you when you are on that website for too long in order for you to get back to work! I haven’t used this yet, but I look forward to trying it and have heard some pretty good things about it.
3. Sleepy.ti: Calculate what time you need to go to sleep by entering in the time that you want to wake up! (works by tracking the REM cycle in order to find the best time to go to bed! Sleep is important guys, don’t take it for granted!)
4. Google Calendar: Helps to keep track of things you need to do hour by hour. Time is HUGE as a college student, so taking the time to schedule things, remembering meetings, etc. will help in the long run!
5. GroupMe: Group messaging app that is often used on campus for different things like clubs, residence halls, etc. Getting the app is useful and I recommend using it for different groups you may be in while on campus.
6. Spotify: I’m pretty sure everyone has heard of Spotify, but I just wanted to add this onto the list because I use it often to listen to music. PLUS, there’s a discount for students if you guys want Spotify Premium. Either way, I recommend using Spotify to listen and to destress whenever needed.
7. GoodReads: I’m an old soul who loves to read books, and GoodReads has always been there for me to keep track of the books that I am reading as well as help me find different books that I may be interested in.

Richard Vaughan: “English is taught as if it were a dead language” | Economy
Richard Vaughan (Houston, Texas) first came to Spain in 1972, for an academic year, and after graduating in Spanish Language and Literature from the University of Texas, he returned in 1974 to spend two years that ended up becoming 45 (of moment). Those classes that started as a means to pay for their stay have turned into 30,000 hours of teaching in the classroom, 10,000 hours of radio lectures and more than 2,000 on television sets; He has supervised more than 10 million hours through his teachers and his name, as President of Vaughan Systems, is automatically associated with the teaching of English in Spain. He has even had time to compose music: a hobby that has led him to play the piano, the electric guitar and the Spanish classical, coming to present his work at both the Madrid Monumental Theater and the National Music Auditorium. We talked to him about teaching English in Spanish, and about the best way to learn a language.
THE COUNTRY: Every time a report on the knowledge of English is published, the Spanish never stand up well. Is it an endemic disease?
Richard Vaughan: We must not forget something: Spain is a large market. Small countries (with smaller populations and / or extension, such as the Netherlands, Greece or Malta), which historically have depended on foreign trade for their prosperity and which have a multilingual mentality, should be set aside. Nations with large internal markets such as Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Russia and even the United Kingdom have been able to develop their economies thanks to these markets, and historically they have not needed languages to generate wealth and ensure the well-being of their population; There has been no multilingual tradition. Spain had its overseas possessions in Latin America, the United Kingdom in India, France in Africa or Southeast Asia … Each used its own language.
EP: And where is the level of the Spanish, if we compare ourselves with countries of similar entity?
RV: If we place ourselves at the level of a supervisor or foreman, which is the bulk of the average business fabric, Spain can rub shoulders with France or Germany. In China, very few speak English. And the same thing happens in Japan … beware, the evil of many should not and cannot console anyone. Spain is wrong, but it is relative. There has been a lot of improvement; I would say that the level of English has doubled.
EP: What do you think of teaching English in the public or concerted school?
RV: The bilingual schools in Madrid, public and concerted, are experiencing an enormous improvement compared to 15 or 20 years ago. I did not agree with the way Esperanza Aguirre approached this change, but what I have found is that young people now understand much more and have lost their fear of speaking. They may not have a good command and still make mistakes, but they can get out of trouble.
Beyond these centers, and to the best of my knowledge, English continues to be poorly studied in both Primary and Secondary. It is studied as if it were a dead language, as if you were going to teach how to drive with a book and without getting into the car. This is so because in the classroom it is still taught theoretically. The kids have to memorize the irregular verbs but they don't hear native voices, and the tests are usually based on the theoretical reproduction of the grammar as if they were mathematical equations to reproduce on paper. And then two things happen: that they do not assimilate it and that they become fond of the language. Many boys “hate” English, they think it is a pain.
EP: And in the professional world?
RV: If I had to qualify the English level of the Spanish professionals when I came to Spain in 1974, I would say it was 1 or 2 out of 10, and now we can put it at 4. Spain still suffers, but also Italy, Germany … A prestigious doctor here goes to an international congress and cannot channel his knowledge in English; something similar happens with engineers, for example. At the managerial level, it is a problem with all companies in Spain, which can maintain brightness and confidence in English.
EP: When does English become essential?
RV: The child will not need English until the age of 23, which is the average age for entering the labor market. It is not necessary before, so you have all that time to acquire an excellent command of the language. Parents and educators have 23 years to fill this gap, and even then they do not succeed.
I tell parents to expose them to English from the moment they return with the baby from the hospital. An hour a day, to get used to the sound of the language and become familiar. Between the ages of three and 12, what you need to do is give them an ear and a decent pronunciation, exposing them to native voices. An hour a day is enough, but enjoy the language, which is part of your daily reality, without exams. How many school days are there per year? 160? Multiply that by 10 school years … That's already 1,600 teaching hours in which, in my opinion, they should not work with written materials, but with a curriculum of activities that include, for example, songs or poems for children.
EP: When are you in favor of introducing the written form?
RV: From the age of 13, when her mind begins to change and she is more analytical. Then they can start reading, but by then they already know how to speak perfectly. And you can also start teaching grammar: present, past, future, conditional … But they already have the most important part of the language, which is hearing.
EP: Why is it so important to expose babies to English, if they still lack the ability to understand what they hear?
Richard Vaughan, in the editorial staff of EL PAÍS. Jaime Villanueva
RV: From birth, a baby already receives six or seven hours a day “in class” in their mother tongue. When he begins to speak with that rag language, around the age of two, he already has 4,000 hours of exposure to his own language. If I give you 4,000 hours of German, and at the same time I take away your job, the mortgage and all the worries, you will have a great level.
EP: Is listening comprehension the most relevant thing then?
RV: You have to let the noise of the language caress your ear; You need to accumulate 1,000 hours of listening to understand a language well. I always recommend that, if you do not have much money, but you do have time, 70% of what you do is aimed at improving listening comprehension, with voices native to Scotland , United States, Australia, etc. Communication begins with the ear, with understanding the meanings and nuances. You will never speak perfect; I don't even do it. 29% is agility with basic grammar, and only the remaining 1% is vocabulary. This may sound surprising, but the vocabulary ends up being acquired. The lack of vocabulary has never been a decrease, but the lack of understanding and not being able to string together two thoughts are.
90% of everything we say in a language is basic, and it's in the first two books of a language. In terms of frequency of use, the verb to be is much more important than bother … We may use drink four times a day but to be it will be two or three times per minute. 30% of all the phrases we say in English contain some form of to be, which is like “the Sun King”. Then you have three prime ministers: to go, to have Y to want, and a council of ministers with verbs like to make, to get, to do, to take, to like, to meet…
EP: How does age affect the ability to learn a language?
RV: The best way to explain it is using the parable of the four trains: from zero to five years old, it is the AVE: if you go to the station with your child, you can take the AVE and assimilate English very easily. From 6 to 12, it is like the Talgo, which is also a very nice train. At these ages, the child still has a great advantage and can learn with some ease. But from 13 to 22 or 23, the train becomes an old locomotive from the 19th century.
After 23, if you have not been to the station, all you have to do is get off the track and start walking. You can get there, but obviously it costs you a lot more: it took me 3,000 hours to acquire my level of Spanish … At that age, with a job and even a mortgage, you don't have time, and there are very few who get to have a good command of starting from scratch or from very basic notions. Sometimes, people of 36 or 37 years come to me scared because they find professional doors closed because of English. They have distorted grammar and phonetics, so you have to go back and start from scratch.
We must make one thing clear: there are no magic formulas for learning a language. My sector attracts opportunists, because people want quick and painless solutions, without effort. People have to be disappointed: it takes a lot of effort, but it's worth it. So if you don't have an excellent teacher to act as a catalyst, inspirer and dazzler, to make the language “mole”, it is impossible to reach a good level in a language. It takes time, effort and many times money … And if you lack this, it will take more effort. But in the end you will come out not only with a second language, but with a sharper mind that will make you more master of your own destiny.
If we want to change the world, we must start with Infant and Primary, with teachers who dazzle children; gto tie the brain of the students passing through the heart.
EP: You do not recommend that your students watch series or movies in English. Why?
RV: Because hearing efficiency is very low. When someone with a medium level of English watches a movie of, say, 100 minutes, the conversational part may not be 15 minutes in total. The rest is action, etc.… I recommend radio or platforms like YouTube, where there are more than 10 million hours of spoken English, but also podcasts or any of the TED Talks talks.
Furthermore, movies and series are not a true reflection of the auditory reality of a language (nor is the teacher, for the opposite reason), and if you sit down to watch a movie and do not understand anything, you can become frustrated. . If understanding the teacher in the classroom has a difficulty factor of 10 out of 100, understanding the English of a real work meeting in London, New York or Melbourne will have a factor of 40 and the movies or series a factor of 100. When I came to Spain, it took me six months to understand 98%; but it took me three years to understand cinema well.
EP: So what advice can you offer to an adult who wants to learn English?
RV: First, find an excellent teacher; and if it is not, find another, even if it takes a year. When you have a teacher that you like, motivation is automatic, and it doesn't matter the subject that they teach you, because they are able to stimulate you and arouse your interest. The teacher is the central catalyst for learning; If everyone had the quality of the best educators you remember, imagine what you would be like today.
If we want to change the world, we have to start with Early Childhood and Primary Education, putting teachers who are able to dazzle children, to make them laugh and enjoy in the classroom. And then continue with the other levels. You have to win the brain of the students, and that is achieved by going through the heart. You have to approach teaching in an emotional way, and they will remember you.
Second, practice continuously. Ask Nadal what is the secret of his success… To master an art it is essential to master the foundations of that art; if you want good english, you have to work the foundations and have patience. People become obsessed with things like conditional, when we use it once every two days … In language, you have to focus on the simplest.
EP: Anything else?
RV: Yes. The third step is to gain ear and confidence, take the book and the teacher and throw them out the window. If you can, go live somewhere where no one speaks Spanish; panic and learn to stay afloat. Lose the fear of water, because the teacher is still the part of the pool where it does not cover, where there is no risk. It is a flight simulator, but it is not flying.
If you can't, there are alternatives such as our Vaughan Town program, where you spend six days in a context of total immersion, practicing English with one of the 1,200 foreign volunteers we bring each year. We rented rural hotels and cloistered a group of 15 or 16 Spaniards with as many English speakers to communicate in English.
In the end, it is about achieving results. The number 180 of the promotion at the Polytechnic can advance to number 1 if your level of English is much better; English blinds the reasoning of recruiters. I always say that I don't teach English; What we do is equip people with the ability to professionally maintain the type in English, that you can negotiate that contract and bring it under your arm with a medium spoken but aurally perfect English. That you understand the first time and that you are able to intervene effectively, speaking in English.
