I know Desi James Potter is a popular head canon but I propose this: half Filipino James Potter. We know his father, Fleamont, is canonically English and is a descendant of the Peverell brothers but little is known about his mother, Euphemia, before she married into the Potter family. There’s a few reasons why I think she could be Filipino without going against canon:

Again, we know next to nothing about her background so she could be of any ethnicity

Most Filipinos are catholic and have “western” names. We tend to go over the top with names as well so no one would blink an eye at “Euphemia”. It’s also possible that James and/or Lily were Christian or were at least raised in that faith since Harry had a godfather

Filipinos have been in England for a while (since mid 19th century). We’re not as well documented or as populous as the Desi community, but the point still stands. Plus I’m from the UK and on many occasions people have mistaken me as Indian

And said they had to draw butterflies, so she had a new artwork for Mulder’s art gallery.

Finally, they saw it, the big blue box. Like a beacon in the sea of all the people. The Tardis was standing exactly where they left it. River thanked god it was because she was not ready to drag The Doctor around the town to look for his box.

Fic Scrap: Forced Marriage, second chance, Trans-Reg & Simp James

James meets Regulus pre Transitioning when he convinces his family to vacation in the same place as Sirius’s.

He falls in love INSTANTLY

They are 15 and 16 and he looks at Reg and immediately tries to woo him & prepares speeches to ask Sirius for his blessing. They have a short summer fling that neither Sirius nor his parents find out about. The Blacks forbid their children from associating with the Potters anyway.

Sirius runs away at some point. The Blacks are in a hurry to marry off Regulus to another prestigious family.

James didn't have contact with Reg in those years but he shows up before the wedding and begs him to run away with him, like Sirius.

Regulus confesses that he doesn't want to get married but he feels trapped and fears for his safety if he doesn't do it.

Then he confesses that he is trans. James is the first person he tells about it.

James promises to give him a life as a man, do anything in his power to protect him and give him what he wants. He reminds him of their summer and that he has been dreaming about being with him since then.

In the end they kiss, but Regulus can't go through with running away.

He gets married.

James is heartbroken.

Two years later, he gets a call out of nowhere.

"James?" The voice is quiet, shy even. Oddly familiar but he can't place it.

"Yes? Who is this?"

"It's, uhm, ... it's me."

James is about to ask who, when the recognition zaps through his body, making him sit up straight and half get out of his chair.

He almost says the name he has always known him as, but remembering his confession on his wedding day, he decides against it.

"You," He whispered. "Is it really..."

"Yes."

James closes his eyes at this voice. He has missed it far more than reasonable for a teenage summer fling and a kiss at his wedding to someone else.

"How are you?"

"Good. ...No, great. Fantastic even."

He hears a smile in his voice. He rarely ever smiled.

"I just applied for a divorce."

This pulls him out of his office chair fully. Unable - and unwilling - to hide his excitement he asks, "Divorce?"

"Yes. My parents died and... I felt like it was now or never. ...I decided it was now."

"Oh my god, I'm so proud of you. I'm so happy for you."

There is a chuckle. James has only ever heard him chuckle once before. He wants to drink up that sound.

"I was wondering if you'd... like to go to dinner with me. So, I can tell you the details, if you want to hear them."

"I'd love to. Tonight? I'm off work at 6, I could meet you at seven or half past."

"Let's make it eight. I'll send you the address after I made the reservation."

"Lovely. I can't wait to see you again."

"Me neither."

James’s heart skips a beat.

"Are you safe?"

"Yes. Don't worry about me. ...I guess I should let you go back to work. I don't want to take up too much of your time."

"No, please, take up all my time. It's been so long since I've heard your voice. Tell me something, anything."

"Okay... uhm, I made some decisions about my life going forward. Would you like to hear them?"

"In great detail."

Another chuckle. "I'll leave the details for the dinner. For now, it is this: I want to be called Regulus. I want to go on T, oficially change my name and sex, go back to my old surname, at least for a little while. I want to have top surgery. I want to get my own flat. I want to adopt at least two cats. I want to go to university, study something, get a job, earn money. I want to learn things and have hobbies that have nothing to do with chores. ... I want to kiss you."

His heart seemed determined to make up for the lost beats by doubling and tripling in speed.

"I want to kiss you in a very, very messy, improper and gay way. ...would that be okay with you?"

"Okay?" James half laughed, trying not to have a heart attack from pure joy. "Regulus. Regulus, Regulus, I vow that I will not rest until every dream and wish of yours is fulfilled."

"Good," Regulus said, and James could hear his relief. "I should go now. I'll see you tonight."

"Yes, yes you will, Regulus."

"Good. ...bye."

"Bye."

They don't hang up. They can't. They have to say good bye four times more until they finally hang up. James skips through the office, a large grin plastered on his face, telling anyone who doesn't want to hear it how he had a date with the most gorgeous person to ever walk the earth tonight.

When he finally arrives at the restaurant, he sees Regulus with short hair and a suit that doesn't belong to him and he knows this will be his future husband. And their wedding will be much grander and happier than Regulus’s first one.

The Stupidity of hating on fanon, featuring Jegulus.

Alright folks,

Welcome to another one of my rants because I found out that there are jegulus haters on tumblr. I have not encountered one but I saw it on my mutuals' page and I had some words (a lot of words) to say.

So let's get started...

One of the main complaints is saying that 'James would never fall for Regulus.' Umm...child, do you know what fanfic is? What fanon is? If not let me spell it out for you- it's made up. Something that is not canon and created by fans by employing their imaginations. We are not saying that James would fall for Regulus in canon at all, so please don't come barging in with your opinions. So yes, we don't really care about canon anyways.

Secondly, the argument of 'Regulus being a terrible person and pureblood supremacist' is really weak. Alright, he was a pureblood supremacist and was involved in terrible things. But do you know what else he was? He was just a 17 year old boy who grew up in an abusive household. A boy who had lost his big brother and had to learn survival at an age too young. He grew up before his time and was so traumatized that he always wanted to please his parents and do as they wish. Regulus was just another victim and he also was the one who ended up being the catalyst to Voldemort's defeat. As someone who studies psychology, viewing a person on the surface is the biggest sign of ignorance and it really shows. As for 'being terrible' then let's not forget that canon James wasn't all sunshine and rainbows either. He improved ofc, but he was still an asshole when he was young. Also, we really don't have enough background on canon Regulus to place him in one box. I love that some people want to believe him as good and fill in the blanks by writing something redeeming.

Then comes the 'it's a misogynistic ship'. Now, I won't argue it fully because I do think there are some people out there who don't like Jily bc they hate Lily. But, from what I've seen majority shippers ship both of them interchangeably or in a polyarmorous sense too. In fact, most jegulus shippers are also Marylily and pandalily shippers too. I really can't see anything misogynistic in it. I've actually read some great fics where Lily is a strong independent woman who is fierce and an overall queen.

And, if the 'canon' of it bothers you too much, then you should check out early Jegulus fics like Choices where nothing is sugar-coated. James still ends up with Lily. But in the end, it leaves you thinking and rooting for them anyways. The more new Jegulus fics are on a fluffier side but that fluff came in after bearing the pain of the full of angst fics like Choices.

Another thing should be noted is that these characters are also a big part of queer community. I've seen so many fans exploring themselves through these characters. Like Regulus as Trans is becoming a popular headcanon and it shows that through creative expression people are finding a safe place to explore. And if you're a bigot then...that is frankly a you problem. One I, or jegulus fans, don't want any part of.

In the end, my motive is not to convince you of shipping these two. It clearly started as a crackship, one even I stumbled upon accidentally. But the fandom has made it into something really beautiful and I think instead of spreading hate we should accept it. There are more problematic pairings to be concerned about, trust me. This one is the least of them all.

Thank you for listening to my rant. And if you have anything negative to say, kindly don't because it would just be proof of your own stupidness. There is no point you can argue about with anything substantial. Because in the end it's fanon. Let fans do what they want and if you don't like it then ignore. No one is forcing it on you.

Warning: this fic features Trans Remus, who is not out to anyone at the beginning. In this snippet, James and Sirius discuss Sirius's future spouse using feminine terms. Yes, this is Remus, but they don't know any better yet.

“So, wedding day jitters? What do you need? Warm socks for your feet? Have you met your lovely bride?”

“I’m not permitted to meet her,” Sirius says. “Apparently, it’s in case I run away first.” 

James walks back over, standing right next to Sirius and fixing him with knowing eyes. “Do you want to run away anyway?” 

���I can’t,” Sirius says. He looks toward James, a small, sad lift to his lips. “I have to have a queen to be the king, and my people need me.” 

James shakes his head. “You know I don’t get it, mate. Why does it have to be a woman? You would be much happier married to a man, and a happy king is a happy kingdom.” 

Sirius scoffs, clicking his tongue as he looks back in the mirror. “You think my happiness is part of the equation at all? Trust me, it’s not. No, most important is heirs, and a gay king married to a man can't make heirs, no matter how much the people may accept that I can love who I love.”

“It's shit,” James says. 

Sirius smiles at him. “It is. But no one ever said being king wasn't shit.” Sirius looks back at himself in the mirror. 

“Should come with some perks, though,” James says. “Like getting to decide who you love.” 

“There are perks! Not that one, of course. But there are definite perks.” Sirius turns around, facing James fully. “It’s fine, James. Royal marriages aren't about love. That was never really in the stars for me.”

James wrinkles his nose. “I guess you could always take after your father and have a consort or two to get you through your very heterosexual marriage.” 

Sirius grimaces. “I’d at least have the decency not to snuff it in his bed.” 

James cackles, clutching his chest. “That is never going to be not funny to me. Do you know if he died like while he was in him? It would be awful for what's his name but–” 

“Evan,” Sirius supplies. “And yes, I do know, and no, I do not want to talk about it.” 

James’s face lights up. “Oh, Circe’s hairy snatch, he was, wasn't he? Your dad was porking his little bed warmer when he kicked it. Please say yes; I need to know. My life will be incomplete otherwise. I mean, may his legacy last an eternity and all that, but I absolutely 

Sirius runs a hand over his face, trying to stifle his laughter. He shouldn't be laughing, but it is just so ridiculous. “No, no, he wasn’t.” Sirius snort-laughs again. “It’s worse. If Evan’s screams are anything to go by, Father was… being porked.” James immediately laughs, doubling over and holding his stomach, and Sirius can’t help but laugh with him. “I can’t believe you made me say that.” 

“I can’t believe it happened! Gods, imagine that. Old King Orion, being fucked by a twink.” That sets James off on another round of laughing. “I’m never going to get over this.” 

“I’m never going to get over the fact that I know this.” Sirius says. He groans. “Evan was wailing it in the hallway. Apparently it was… a while before he noticed.” 

James laughs again, this time falling on the ground. “This might be the best day of my life.” 

Sirius suddenly sobers. “Can’t say the same, honestly.”

it’s so interesting to see how the interpretation of teen (boy) behavior in books has changed since they were written. it’s mostly for the better, but i think it does cause some people to refuse to engage in good faith with the source material, or on its own terms. i’ve loved hp since i was a kid, but i had never interacted at all with the fan side of things until maybe a year ago, and it was very odd (on the whole — which is why i’ve mostly just stuck to a handful of blogs with great fics and meta, like yours) to see how a lot of the text is taken now, compared to how my friends and i understood it at the time. i think its totally fair — and good, on a cultural level — to point out that the boy who pulls your pigtails isn’t being cute, and your male friend being in love with you doesn’t mean you owe him anything. but it’s also like … kind of intentionally closing the eyes to how these parts of the story are meant to come across? and i am not coming in here as some kind of “boys will be boys” person, but teenagers are messy in their relationships and their friendships, and more relevantly, it’s very clear what types of dynamics are being presented by the text. and it can be fun to pick apart what kinds of narratives are meant to be taken as romantic in different stories written in different times/places and why, but to look at the story on a story level you’ve got to also work with what it gives you.

Yes I think you make a very good point! I agree and personally I think both Snape and James would be written slightly differently if they were written today. Also, imo there's an element of wishful thinking coupled with naivety (and this has always existed tbf) when people who haven't ever been cis teenage boys try to write cis teenage boys haha. Like the 'closing of eyes' isn't always intentional. I know I keep going on about the Inbetweeners but I literally think watching that as a teen myself gave me an insight that I can never take back about what teenage boys are like haha.

Like this isn't to say that teenage boys are all exactly alike, or that there's some inherent, natural difference between boys and girls in terms of mentality or personality, but there is a social difference, generally speaking, a constructed one that happens because boys and girls are raised and socialised in a patriarchy. It's obviously not universal at all, and that's not even accounting for trans kids and the complexities they face, because even among cis boys and girls or men and women there's endless variety, and gender absolutely does not determine personality, interests, etc. Unfortunately it does influence them, though, that's our reality.

In terms of fiction, especially fanfic, obv one is free to do as they please. But there is such a thing as narrative voice, which can be an important thing to consider. Again when it comes to fanfiction it Does Not Matter that much, it's for fun, but in published fiction (or if you care about quality ig) it just is something you should consider. This is where the 'Men Writing Women' thing comes in, where you read something so obviously written by a man who doesn't understand how women (generally) think or speak or act at all. And in our patriarchal society such usually ends up being offensive and has often been overlooked and accepted when it shouldn't be. I don't think it's helpful to pretend men can't write women either, since plenty of male authors write female characters beautifully and the rest shouldn't be let off the hook. If you can't write women, skill issue and you shouldn't be published.

Anyway it's vastly more forgivable and understandable, and it pains me to say it but I think you can sometimes tell when it's a woman writing a man or a boy too. I will say on the whole I think women are better at writing men than the reverse haha, probably because we've been socialised to empathise with men whereas boys are not taught (by society) to empathise with women. Maybe women even empathise a little too much tbh. Maybe that's the problem, like we subconsciously over-project our ideals onto male characters, making them too nice, too woke, too cuddly, too sweet, because that's what we want to see, and leaving out the nastier elements that are so common. Again, that's not necessarily a problem!! Only if you're trying to create a realistic, effective portrayal of a certain (average) type of teenage boy-- which you don't have to do. I'd raise my eyebrows at an unrealistic portrayal much more in published fiction than fanfiction personally.

And ofc you can always choose to write a character who diverges from the accepted norm, but to do so effectively has to be a deliberate choice and done thoughtfully. For a boy like James, who is very average, the norm, he's decent enough but no Woke Feminist King haha. He's not meant to be.

Anyway, I think that's why the Marauders et al (including Death Eaters lol) are nowadays often portrayed like sweet little babies who all cuddle and take care of each other and respect women LOL. Like whatever, it's escapism haha, it's understandable. But sometimes I do think a lot of these people have never really interacted with many gay men or know what their culture is like. lmao. straight men maybe, but in a limited way. if you've ever had the misfortune to be with a group of cishet men who are talking freely with each other you'll know what I mean. again this is GENERAL. and socially constructed, not inherent. but very common nevertheless.

So, I stopped writing fanfiction about 5 years ago, pre-jegulus popularity, and when I came back to it earlier this year I was BAFFLED. Like, what do you mean James and Regulus?! Who did this?! Why is this a thing?!

But now, I get it. I enjoy the dynamic. I don't know if I'd ever write it, because I love Jily so much and I'm comfortable writing them, and I haven't gone out of my way to read Jegulus stuff, only background in Wolfstar fics, but I like to hint at it sometimes these days. I have a fic that's almost done that really hints at Jegulus being at least one-sided. I'm open to it? I guess is my answer haha.

Yeah when I tried to form a question a sub question was "does your patron god has a say in your gender identity" but I couldn't pinpoint what I don't like in that one so I didn't ask lol but it makes sense tho if the god made everything about you, they made EVERYTHING about you. So there's a will of gods about their cults and covens but there also mortals who think they know better than God? Like for example Demeter is a mother goddess and she's a patron goddess of some trans women bc generally speaking motherhood is not only about giving birth. Yet Molly Weasley as high priestess of the largest fertility cult can deny her based on her gender identity? Wouldn't that kinda defy the gods? Could a god abandon their cult no matter how massive it is if they're trying to ignore God's wishes? Could they choose a different person to start from scratch if their high priest or priestess ignore their wishes? Would there be repercussions for such act?

I think it's less like "they made you to be this" and more "they made you and knew the journey you would walk" like "they made you and love and accept every aspect of you."

Because while yes, this god made you, this god does not control you. There's a line there where we still have free will. Just because a god of fate said that Hermione would be happy with James doesn't mean she will be. She has the potential to be. But she has free will and she can also make herself and him miserable if she so chooses.

This is where it ties back into the corruption of the cults. Just because your god or goddess loves and accepts all their magicals, it doesn't mean the coven leader does. And also remember that not everyone has an available coven for their patron god. If a very minor fertility goddess is your patron god and she has no coven in your region, you're likely to be accepted by a different but similar god or goddess. That high priestess doesn't share your patron god and the god of that coven doesn't have the same vetted interest in you as your patron god does.

On top of this all, gods and goddesses aren't SUPER involved in the lives of their magicals. That's part of the reason the whole thing with James and Hermione is so BIG. It's insane. It's the stuff of legends. People will talk about their union and their love story for the rest of time.

hiiii i adore all your stuff!! (very demure 🙂 very mindful 🙂‍↕️) just wanted to ask ur opinion on something i saw on tiktok about the marauders fandom using diversity amongst characters like a checklist of things to tick off and not actually doing that representation justice as a result? like, for me, i feel like i’d rather people have a go at including diverse characters than simply having everyone be cis, thin, and white, but i do also understand that there can also be harmful portrayals of these things. i’ve written fics (mostly wolfstar) and i still include things like james being desi and dorcas being black, and try to incorporate this into their characters rather than only appearance but also, when they aren’t the pov characters of the fic it can be difficult to go in depth into their representation. obviously, i can go and write a james centric or dorcas centric fic and go more in depth, but that’s just not possible in every single fic. i don’t want my portrayals to be seen as tokenising or anything, but a lot of the fanon identities have become canon in my head. (even like welsh remus and french sirius (which people in the comments of this tt were getting mad about authors using google translate for bc it’s inaccurate and saying that we only included it bc french it “hot” even though the black family motto is literally in french??)) idk, just wondered your thoughts since you always seem to say everything so well! xxx

MOVINGGG on i think the most important part of this is that diversity does not necessarily mean that everything is represented to the same depth every single time. one of my friends (hi rachel) phrased it as:

"diversity is a salad not a melting pot"

i think it's incredibly unrealistic to look at every individual work and expect them to go in depth about every single part, especially with side characters.

when we talk about diversity in fandom (or diversity in media in general tbh) for me at least, it just means the diversity being there as a whole. we can find fics that center around desi james and his experiences, we can find fics that center around dorcas' race (thtf is incredible here for example), we can find fics that center around the trans experience - salad pot. everything is available, you just have to find the parts you like the same way you dig in a salad bowl and take what you want.

diversity also means normalising the fact that representations are made. to have them there without necessarily needing to expand upon it??? just normalised. (like trans reg fics obviously go in depth from his pov but BACKGROUND trans reg will just be like "two cresent scars on his chest" 🙂↕️ normalised 🙂↕️). big conversations are necessary as a Whole, but not in every individual work imo.

i don't think it's "tokenising" to not go in depth about them, i think this is,,, a hobby. LIKE MAYBE THAT'S BAD TO SAY BUT i wouldn't call it tokenising to include desi james in a fic without necessarily going into detail about it because that's a very popular hc in the fandom. i think it's worse to say that diversity needs to be perfect or it shouldn't be there at all.

if the pov isn't focused around the character in question then i think it's perfectlyyy fine to just throw in a few things. this is a fun hobby. we don't expect perfection and the fact that this fandom is drawn from the veryyyyy undiverse core material and we've got this!? incredible.

generally i just don't think many people on tiktok get how fandoms work because they've joined when it's become popularised WHICH IS OKAY!!! welcome !!! have fun !!! but fandoms have ALWAYS been about adding diversity and creating queer ships and it feels like recently there's a lot of people policing on what to do when that's just Not How It Works.

i don't think diversity is being treated as a checklist, i think the in depth works are out there, there are people who write in depth povs of experiences and there are HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of fics. we can't expect every single one to have big conversations about it, especially not with side characters. sometimes it's nice to be represented without them making it your entire personality.

i can only speak from the trans and disabled side of it but i KNOW that there's plentyyyy fics that go in depth about that, and i don't expect every fic ever to go in depth. if i want a disability focused fic? i'll find one. other than that yeah it's fine to just say that remus is using a cane rn and not go into detail about it. esp if he's a background character.

I write canon compliant with occasional minor tweaks which are noted in the tags. For all my works and series, I also try to write all my smut scenes/fics in a way that they can be skipped over without losing too much context from the larger narrative to make them friendly for people who just want the narrative bits.

I ask that minors do NOT engage with any of my 18+ content, particularly my E rated fics. Any content I feel is raunchy will be tagged as “#for the adults” for the sake of filtering convenience. Five (5) Harry Potter (trans rights) fics to read before you die

That’s right I’m talking about the series written by that stupid fucking transphobe. Harry Potter defined so much of my childhood and growing up as a fan and also realizing that I’m trans was a really difficult experience for me. It kills me that something that used to bring me so much joy is now tainted by the author’s awfulness. Not to say the series isn’t without its inherent problems like the antisemitism, the weird slavery attitude, the disgusting fatphobia, and general homophobia.

Personally, I don’t consider anything outside the books to be canon; this gives me so much more breathing room as a fan to imagine a better wizarding world. Basically, if that bloody TERF had to specify it outside the books then I don’t care – she could have written it in but chose not to, once the book is out there EVERY interpretation becomes valid and if I decide that everyone was trans and also banging each other then I get to do that. Get fucked Joanne.

That TERF has also tried to sue fan works in the past and has said quite a bit about how much she dislikes fanfiction. But you see, I already want to upset her so I will be continuing to enjoy these fanworks that were, in some way, a great source of joy for me, something comforting in a world that seems to get more and more complicated and cruel every day. So this is a countdown of the five Harry Potter fics I recommend to everyone. You don’t have to agree with my list, but I just wanted to put it out there because it’s been on my mind lately.

5. My Immortal by “Tara Gillespie or XXXbloodyrists666XXX”: It’s the OG bad fanfic you have to read it to appreciate how awful it is. You don’t have to finish it, but you do have to cry limpid tears over it. Rated M on fanfiction.net CW for really extraordinarily bad writing, mentions of self harm and suicide, pedophilia, underage sex, and did I mention really really bad writing.

4. Turn by Saras_Girl This is THE Drarry fic. It looks at how one small change can have ramifications over time so if you’re a fan of the butterfly effect this is the fic for you. Rated E for sex scenes and mental health struggles. Technically canon compliant all the way to the epilogue but like, not.

3. Oh God Not Again! By Sarah1281 This is objectively the funniest fic written for this series. Adult Harry sassing everyone in sight is a fucking hoot. If you loved sassy Harry this one’s for you. Harry is accidentally sent back to his 11th birthday in 1991 at the age of 23 trapped in his 11 year old body but with all his memories and he apparently does not give a single fuck. Rated G but with trigger warning for canon-typical murder and violence, child endangerment, and sass so good it burns you through the screen.

2. Harry Potter and the Lack of Lamb Sauce by imagitory AKA the Gordon Ramsay fic. Yes, instead of Slughorn coming to teach potions in the Half-Blood Prince, its Gordon Fucking Ramsay and he has a bone to pick with Dumbledore about watching all this child abuse and doing nothing about it. It’s also Ron-centric which is so important because a lot of the fandom tends to characterize Ron as a horrible person when he’s the first person who saw past what Harry is to WHO Harry is and his strength in owning up when he does the wrong thing is actually very important to the series. Rated G, follows the canon ships, very very well written.

And finally . . .

1. Casting Moonshadows by Moonsign. You can keep your ‘The Shoebox Project’ and your ‘All the Young Dudes’ THIS is the Marauders fic for me. It is just so perfect in the way it develops not just Remus and Sirius but also James, Lily, Peter, Frank, Alice, Marlene, Dorcas, Mary and heaps of others. It made me care about the OCs! Its is a Wolfstar fic with background Jily and it is the greatest. It balances the angst and the fluff and as far as I’m concerned is canon compliant. This FEELS like a Harry Potter story, just with the way the narrative goes and it sucks you in so quickly with one of the best opening lines:

“Remus had always thought of memories as being like framed photographs on a shelf. Most of them were placed in the sun and faded over time. Sometimes the colour faded, leaving only a vague sense of the time; the outlines of a memory that changed a little with retelling. Sometimes it was the outlines that faded so the colour remained in bright, vivid blurs – a real sense of the time but no details.”

This fic will break you and then put you back together. It is rated M for sex in later chapters, quite a bit of violence, child endangerment, and mental health struggles. If you’re someone who is squicked by underage sex between two consenting teenagers or just not into sex in fanfic in general you can skip the sex scenes as they do not generally contain any plot.
