Unspoken Rivalry | Zayne/Reader + Implied!Caleb/Reader
About: Ever since that incident, you rarely mentioned Caleb to anyone. So when you suddenly brought him up while in the fitting room with Zayne, his curiosity was piqued, albeit unwillingly.
Pairings: Zayne/Reader, Implied!Caleb/Reader
Notes: Sorry for repost and not smut haha. Decided to put all my L&DS writings here on this sideblog instead of my main blog because I didn't want to muddle things up. Anyway got this idea when Zayne was surprised at MC knowing how to tie a tie and I was like, HMMM maybe because she had practice with Caleb??? But nope the game went the other way.
AO3: Read here!
Warning: Implied love triangle.
“I’m shocked. I didn’t expect you to be good at tying a tie.”
You inspected the black tie you had selected for Zayne for a moment, nodding in approval at your own tastes.
“Why, of course.” You said with a smile, glancing at him before directing him to face the full length mirror before you two. “I had a lot of practice.”
“Practice?”
“Caleb.” Zayne raised his eyebrows at the sudden mention of that name; your mutual childhood friend who had sadly passed away months prior. You rarely mentioned him nowadays, so to hear his name slip past your lips without anything prompting was a surprise.
“I… I used to do his tie for him before we went to school.” You whispered, fond memories of you tying his school tie while you complained about him not doing it himself surfaced. It felt like it was just yesterday when you complained about his odd request of making you do this every school day morning, but now…
“I’m sure he’s capable of doing it himself.” Zayne remarked, careful with his choice of words. He eyed you through the mirror, pointedly ignoring the sting of jealousy that made itself known when he saw you smiled wistfully.
You shook your head and looked ahead, eyes unseeing and absorbed in those innocent, carefree days where everything was still normal. “He said it’s for good luck.” You explained, missing the light bemused snort beside you. “He would whine about not having the goddess of luck’s blessing if I didn’t.”
‘That could’ve been you in his place.’ A traitorous part of him mumbled, and Zayne promptly shoved that thought back to the corners of his mind. But it ceased to be silenced. ‘That should’ve been you. But you chose to distance yourself.’
‘It was for her sake.’
‘But was it worth it? Missing precious time with her? Being replaced by someone else?’ That voice hissed, reminding him of the reluctant distance he had placed between him and you. He told himself that it was necessary for him to focus on his studies if he wanted to take care of you in the future, and that indulging in your presence then would only hinder his carefully laid plans. ‘You were the perfect match for her and yet you–’
Opting not to let his darker, less desirable thoughts taunt him, Zayne focused on you instead, placing a hand behind the small of your back and brought you before the mirror.
“Do you think we still match?” He asked, his hushed question barely over the calming instrumentals that the shop you were in chose to play. If it weren’t for him being right next to you, you would’ve missed his question entirely.
You scrutinized his outfit through the mirror, and smiled. “I think we do.”
“Good.” Zayne let out a breath he unconsciously held back. He stared at his reflection once more, wondering. Would he have had the same treatment if he had stayed?
If Caleb was still the same boy he had met all those years ago, he would’ve hated you extending the same care towards Zayne himself. He remembered being at the receiving end of Caleb’s piercing gaze multiple times when they were still together, especially when you had looked to Zayne instead of him for certain matters.
‘The past matters naught. What’s important is now and the future.’ He thought as he turned his focus towards you, silencing the doubts of you favoring Caleb over him.
“Will you tie my tie for me on that day then?” He asked, the corners of his lip threatening to twitch upward when you stared at him, perplexed.
“Do you need the goddess of luck’s blessing as well?” You joked in response, only to sigh when you realized he was serious. “Don’t tease me, Zayne. Why would you need me to do it anyway?”
“For luck.”
“Why would you need luck of all things? It’s just a banquet!”
“You never know.” Zayne parroted the words you said this morning. You sighed, wondering if he lied about only studying and joined a debate club when he was still in school.
“Fine! I don’t understand why you and Caleb want me to tie it when you two could do it better than me.” A small smile appeared on his face as you grumbled, preparing to change out of the outfit he had picked out for you.
‘You will understand eventually.’ He thought as a staff member approached him with his card and receipt in hand, thanking him for his patronage.
‘For what man wouldn’t want their goddess' attention?’

daniel profeta Interview
Hey y'all!! Back around March/April 2023 I was approached by a diy "magazine" that was more of a blog about artists in Georgia, to record an interview about my music and other projects. Sadly they decided against using it, but they just sent me a transcript so I could post it myself. It's slightly disjointed, but maybe you'll find some enjoyment out of it.
daniel: My dad got a used acoustic guitar when I was 13, and I kinda stole it to practice with all the time. So began my awe-inspiring journey of entirely mundane events. I taught myself how to play and sing with YouTube and just went forward from there. All throughout my life I've had problems expressing myself, but music, and art as a whole, have become my voice and taken over nearly every aspect of my life.
With hindsight I realized this always was the case. As a kid I was always enamored with storytelling… From reading for hours a day to attempting and failing to write a fantasy novel, from crying listening to Elliott Smith, Alex G, Mitski, Car Seat Headrest, Phoebe Bridgers, and countless other artists and bands to writing and recording hundreds of songs that never saw the light of day, my life has been a string of "failures" that's slowly becoming a vessel for expression. Meeting that one person who knows your songs and sings along with you, knowing you wrote something that meant anything to another human, makes me feel less alone. That's what it's all about.
I owe a lot to my parents for cultivating an appreciation for art, and while they never exactly "approved" of my life choices (laughs), they never really tried to stop me. Maybe they should have tried harder, who knows. When I was really young my mom tried and succeeded at getting me interested in acting in films. While I started as an extra in shows and movies like Stranger Things and The Hunger Games (it's a lot easier to be a movie extra than many people think), I eventually started getting actual roles. I've been in a few horror short films, and if you ever try to talk to me about horror I will talk your ear off… But the highlights of my acting career have been working in the incredible educational series Super Science Showcase as the geeky character Caleb, and meeting and working with the innovative director Barry Jenkins on the show The Underground Railroad (while my role was fairly small in that, that week of filming was one of the most surreal and rewarding experiences of my life, second only to playing live music and having people scream my lyrics in my face).
I was homeschooled growing up, and my family was forced to move around a lot as we struggled to find affordable housing and jobs. The cool thing about being homeschooled is you kinda set your own hours and have a little more free time, but the bad thing (for me) about homeschooling was the feeling of isolation and inability to do much besides write and try to make stuff. I wasn't allowed on the internet until I was 14-15, but then it was like a whole new world opened up for me.
One interesting thing about trying to create this life is the weird relationship most people have to it. Like, no one supports you unless you're successful, yet it's almost impossible to be successful without support. For example, I have a YouTube channel where I have uploaded nearly 2000 videos over the course of 3 years (yes, I know I have no life, don't rub it in) that's just called "daniel profeta" (stylized lowercase cause I'm cool). In the last few months I went from having 1000 subscribers to having 25,000 subscribers. My point being, "overnight" success is only real to people on the outside, people who don't see the thousands of failed attempts. People who don't hear the conversations where everyone close to you tells you to give up. Every step of the way there are opportunities to learn and grow and adapt, but you must be willing to block out the noise and get up every time you fall. That's the realest thing people who make art will learn, not everyone will like what you're doing. It takes time and effort to find YOUR people. But just know they're out there, and never give up.
I never had formal training of any kind, for acting, writing, guitar, vocals, bass, piano, recording, editing, the list goes on. Quickly I learned that I would never have the equipment, connections, or resources that many others did, but that's where you become resourceful. I am forever indebted to lo-fi music like Car Seat Headrest, The Mountain Goats, Bright Eyes, and Daniel Johnston, because without them I probably never would have had the courage to start. The ethos of DIY is one outside of gatekeeping and elitism, the ideas and community are open in mind and heart. We will "make it", and we will do so on our own terms. So, to keep this explanation brief, I have made multiple albums of music with no "real" recording equipment and recorded music videos myself with a crappy camera and some friends. I play all the instruments and do all the mixing myself. It's incredibly fun yet tedious, but the feeling of uploading or playing something is the greatest feeling in the world.
Your question was if my road was a smooth one, but I would say there really wasn't a road at all. Just foreboding uncharted wilderness with a few guiding lights of inspiration to help me on the way to creating the life I hope to have. But the way I see it, each failing, each stumble, and each limitation were just blessings in disguise. Take my music for instance, I used to feel ashamed of the low recording quality of my early work, but now I see it like a badge. It's honest, raw, and ultimately more powerful and unique. And the people I've met are some of the most driven and ambitious people in the world. We will make it, and when we do everyone who doubted will eat their words (laughs again), not that it matters. To quote Frank Lopez Jr. "Probably won't taste like the blood sweat and tears and the fear of regret and the ever elusive 3% chance I’m going to make it."
My main thing right now is music, and I play all over Atlanta and the rest of Georgia (if any venues or people with cool basements hears this and wants to book me, hello…. My name is Daniel, and I'm a pretty cool guy who's fairly easy to exploit. Feel free to reach out as I'm nearly always desperate for work) and hope to start playing more states soon. I currently don't have a band (if any cool people hear this and want to join my band, hello…), so my live shows are a mix of covers and original music done with an acoustic guitar. Folk music, punk music, indie rock, confessional songwriting, and the heaviest industrial metal/noise music you've heard since Swans. Or 100 Gecs.
But I am most proud of my recording efforts to be honest. The website Bandcamp has been a godsend. One of the only companies that fairly pays artists right now (looking at you Spotify…), Bandcamp is a place artists can upload music and charge for it and whatever. Anyways, I have 2 full albums and a 25 minute EP on Bandcamp and on my YouTube channel. I recorded many many songs and sequenced albums before this, but none of that has seen the light of day.
The first album is called Mania Machinations and it was pretty depressing to make and to listen to. But it was incredibly therapeutic to me, it felt like casting out demons. There are also a few songs I still think are really pretty, like the song Go to Bed which is about that feeling I mentioned earlier. I remember I was on a call with someone I trusted for hours and at the end they told me I should stop trying to make music because it didn't sound good. They told me I was going to end up broke and homeless and that I was pretty stupid for even attempting to do this stuff.
To me, the point has always been about expression and catharsis. And once I found a few people who my messages resonated with, then the point expanded to almost a group therapy thing. Casting out demons. So anyways, I got off that call that fateful night at 5 am and went to my room and wrote Go to Bed to try and describe all the thoughts in my stupid head. It started out bitter, but then changed and became something beautiful.
The second album is Paper Skies, and in that one I tried to adopt a character to live the life I want to live. Themes of touring, meeting people, and still not quite finding whatever it is I'm looking for. Ideas of ascending to the stars by shooting for the moon. Lots of pipe dreams and sad breakup songs. But about halfway through, the "character" starts to fall apart as imposter syndrome takes hold. In the end I go back to themes of mental health and isolation. This album is lyrically super meta and kind of pretentious, but when I wrote it, it didn't feel that way.
And my latest project is an EP called The Sighting, which I highly recommend as a starting point if you want to listen to my music. The Sighting is titled to sound like a UFO encounter. I tried to tone down some of the darker elements, and I just really like the way this one turned out. I'm a big album person, and when I write I try to sequence things right. Everything has purpose and is tied together thematically, and in this case I was thinking of the future. Of the possible end of the world or breakdown of society as we currently know it. But instead of making songs about that, I just used a post-apocalyptic setting as a backdrop for a bunch of songs that at their heart are love songs. The music videos I made I'm really proud of, especially one called Lighting in a Bottle (which was inspired by Elliott Smith's video for Coming Up Roses).
Oh, almost forgot to mention this, but if you download any of my music off Bandcamp you get access to liner notes and cool artwork. Also, exclusive to The Sighting there is a pdf that serves as a book of short stories to flesh out the post-apocalyptic world. There's a lot of recurring themes and motifs in my work, and a lot of them get explained in much further detail. Plus, they took months to write so it'd be awesome if people got to read them.
Finally, I'm currently obsessed with YouTube. On my channel I talk about music, weird media, horror, and make video essays and commentary style videos on pretty much anything I'm interested in. Every now and then I go live and play music. I think I'm funny, maybe you will too!
The music industry is so vast, I don't think I can even begin to predict how things are going to shake out, I can only speak to my little bubble. But one thing I know for certain, you'll be hearing about me and my associates more and more as the years go on. Just kidding… Or am I?
In all seriousness, I am seeing some interesting trends develop among people my age (I'm 19) {note from current me: I'm 20 now lol}. More and more bands like, I don't know, Pigeon Pit, are finding success. The Front Bottoms are getting huge. Phoebe Bridgers is a cultural icon. People like Mac Demarco are able to release music on Bandcamp and actually become millionaires. Some would have you believe music is dying, I believe there has never been a more interesting time in music. The variety, lack of extreme censorship, ability to find fans and friends without needing a record label, power to play almost anywhere, at this point all you really need is patience, drive, determination, and something to say. Everyone has something to say.
Indie rock and psychedelic rock seem to be making a comeback into the mainstream, and so does pop punk and nu-metal. Lots of genres being mashed together to create new things. 100 Gecs basically made a whole new genre super popular. An artist called Weatherday made one of the coolest albums ever only a couple years ago. Will Toledo went from recording albums in his car to playing big venues.
The world seems to be able to tell when an artist is being real, so my advice for artists that want to find lasting success would be to do whatever you want. Don't worry too much about trends, there's a place for pretty much everything and you'll have way more fun making the weird stuff you want to make instead of making something that looks or sounds exactly like whatever happens to be popular at the time. Sure, the culture shifts, but it's never boring.
That's my whole thing, at least art is never boring. I can try to approach life as an adventure instead of as a terrifying slog through hardship and pain. Whether or not I'm deluding myself doesn't really matter at that point. Perspective is like 50% of your entire outlook and attitude I've come to learn.
thanks for reading, if any blogs wanna interview me and also not be too scaredy-cat to publish it:)

Has your work with the wiki informed how you interact with the fandom? Scrutinizing the source material so closely and all.
Oh definitely, and this is a great question.
I think, without getting too deep into weeds or bitterness, that my attitude towards aggressively non-canonical (or, frankly, anti-canonical) interpretations of ships or characters has shifted both because of my negative experiences with the Fandom wiki and because I effectively have to go over the happenings of each episode two or three times. Additionally, my deep dislike and distrust of conspiracy theories long pre-dates my work on wikis or even involvement with fandom, but now that I spend a decent amount of "fandom time" looking up citations, I have even less patience for it. There are so many wonderful sources beyond just the wiki! We have a transcript search! We have Dani's recaps! We have so many sourcebooks! We have a talkback/commentary show! Please, while I'd love for people to use and add to the wiki, at the very least, if you don't have time to watch or rewatch episodes in full, use these wonderful resources instead of relying on like, someone's personal silly little clip compilations to shape your understanding.
In terms of far more positive things, I think because wiki pages are changing, living documents, going back to them has given me a lot of insight that I might have forgotten. To give an example - just now, in summarizing the party's trip towards Yios, I ran across the fact that Imogen was asked if she wanted to give up her powers - if there were a cure, whether she'd take it - and she responded that while once she felt that way, she no longer does. I think Imogen's relationship with power is fascinating, and I think this puts her in contrast with Liliana in a new and interesting way that I'd love to explore further once we return to more direct conflict. This small moment says so much, but I'd forgotten it in the several months since it aired, and probably wouldn't have accessed again if I were not a wiki editor. I've also been doing a lot of work on editing out plagiarism, or fleshing out largely overlooked details, and it's a delight to get to revisit prior campaigns and see how everything fits together. I get both a very high level view of the world, and also get to zero in on tiny moments, like Veth shooting Caleb in the Vellum Steeple library, and I'm so grateful I get to relive that, and often my meta is informed by what I'm working on and what details I'm immersed in and the connections they spark.
Finally - while I'm obviously super opinionated here, on Tumblr, I think it's a really good and important exercise that I also spend time in a place where I need to consciously prioritize a neutral voice and give attention even to things I dislike. This is an entirely separate post so I won't derail myself but I think part of why I sometimes get extremely bizarre anons/responses is that I'm both someone who talks about CR on the whole, but also am open about my preferences (rather than running a blog that's highly focused on one character/ship nor being a true generalist blog that primarily reblogs art). Anyway, working on the wiki means that, for example, even if I'm really frustrated with an episode or a character or a relationship, I need to spend time and stop and ask myself what is actually happening, outside of my own feelings. I think this is a really good practice to have with fiction! I think you need to be able to do both and compartmentalize and switch between them; to say "what is the author/creator trying to say and how are they saying it and what is literally occurring" and also "how do I, an individual with my own unique perspective, feel about what's happening." Or at the very least, if you can't do this, you can still enjoy yourself, but you will always be preaching to the choir.
#answered#blorbologist#critical role wiki#cr tag#my philosophy is that you should lie down on the floor and let the narrative deep tissue massage you#and i think once you get that you will understand all my positions as a coherent viewpoint even if they're loud and obnoxious at times

I have to deeply disagree on Belos not being racist or misogynistic because of his interactions with Luz. They were very faux-polite; Trying to get Luz on his side, and latching onto her as a human above the witches. But just because he sees her as better than witches doesn’t meant he actually respects WoC, because Belos is just desperate for any human; But if Luz came with a truly human white boy, he’d have likely ignored her.
Belos still tried to murder her for not going along with his plans, instead of just dragging Luz to the human realm with him. He belittles and undermines Luz’s agency by saying witches have messed with her perception of reality; He’s calling her crazy. His interactions with her are no different than white Americans who kidnap native children and whitewash them into their culture to ‘save’ them, it’s deeply white savior.
He was a 1600’s Puritan, and every source I’ve found confirms they were the typical bigotry bag. Some weren’t, but that’s why Caleb exists. But Belos’ core is that he’s a bigot who doesn’t want to let go of being a bigot, he’s not going to examine his biases when he enjoys dehumanizing an entire group to wipe them out, and calls them ‘savage’. He’s a witch hunter, but that doesn’t exist in a void; That persecution is very tied up with actual real life biases and just because white dudes were also targeted doesn’t preclude witch hunting from being a bigoted practice.
In the end, I don’t think him being a man of science really matters much when elsewhere and elsewhen is about how Philip takes credit from others and steals their work, and makes exceptions for himself like any homophobic Christian who selectively picks and chooses from the Bible. Him entering Gravesfield as an outsider alongside Caleb shows that he knows Puritanism isn’t all there is to the world, he had a frame of reference for a life beyond that, and someone he’d trust over the Puritan strangers.
But he willingly converted to Puritan ideology by choosing to stick with it, because of its Christian white supremacy promising Belos would be one of the better, special ones. He didn’t just go along to survive, and leave when he had the chance. Belos began his mission attempting to murder a woman, and even though Caleb stayed in the colony until he was an adult, Philip never listened to him.
I don’t think he’s a bright mind doomed by his time when he had a whole demon realm to flourish in; Definitely a charismatic politician, but between Belos taking credit and thinking he’s special, the engineering at best reminds me of Elon Musk or Thomas Edison. Belos definitely represents everything wrong with the U.S., with televangelists who rage about pokemon being satanic, and with white colonialism as a whole.
Speaking as a PoC; If he looks like a racist and walks like a racist, he’s a racist.
my sibling in faith of your choosing i have not talked about the old man on this blog for well over a year i moved fandoms and fixations like thrice
#i do see your points though#anyways because this is a belos ask and my belos ask tax still applies that'll be one dollar

Four in One Post
For my Filipino Friend's Signature On This Day Post
I totally remember that time when my friend got to dress up in his signature clothes during that time. And normally i never minded him with his Darwin Hat, because if i were to have my own Signature clothes, i bet i can practice while wearing a cute Mona hat or a Tails hat and practicing on signing my secondary signature while i use my original signature for personal things. And also, i used to wear Sketchers shoes sometimes. Even my mom wanted some while we were on vacation last month. But if i were to wear Sketchers shoes again, then maybe i should stick with the Airaiders where the shoes are cool and they can breathe.
And a Response to my Filipino Friend.
Well Warioware is a really good game. But if you were to plan on buying a Switch, you should order Get it Together and Move it. But normally Move It does the same exercise content as Smooth Moves does on the Wii. But if you were to get that as well on the Wii, but normally your Cousin is the only one who has a Wii. Plus if you got the Membership Expansion, you can try out the GBA titles on there as well as for 64 and Genesis. But if you get the normal Membership, you can go classic and we can play 2 players of NES, SNES and Game Boy. Also, i'm glad you like my meal, and if you were to try it, i bet it'll taste really good. I chose this meal since i'm trying to eat healthier before i go to my next well check, so i'm sure i'm trying my best to stay healthy, even the Speedsters will help the Ramcats to get healthy since they're great with physical education. Plus for your Paper Dolls, they might like it too. Because i was glad i got to do a Cooking class since i do want to try some of the meals that are healthy. And normally if Shadow and Debby wanted to eat and stay healthy, then maybe Rita is the only person who can help them alongside Windy.
For my Filipino Friend's On This Day Post of Chowder and Panini's Opposite
You know it does look really cute of Chowder and Panini doing the exact same opposite as his remake. But i also remember seeing Lisa doing one with her character Callie the Calico cat. She had a problem with Brandon the Cat who he's so obsessed with Callie. He keeps chasing her which it's kinda like the same with Panini chasing Chowder. And her Series is quite good ever since she used her Flipnote to create Callie. And that's how i remember her content is going to be as different compared to Chowder's.
And finally for the Wangan Maxi Tune Post you discussed as promise
It is really cool to see he got the custom market in Wangan Maxi Tune and got back to the game. And even when i get my Banapassport anytime i go the theme park and the arcades, i'm sure i'll ask if they have a machine or ask an employee if they have any Banapassport so i can give it a shot on making my custom vehicles for Shadow and Tory and even Caleb too. And the Ramcats will be ready to race with the Speedsters and have them race with them in Mario Kart Arcade GP DX as well. If any reason they want to add customs to Mario Kart As well.

JAXON REED
GENDER: Cis-male
SPECIES: Werewolf | Beta | Lycaon Pack
AGE: 200+
SEXUALITY: Pansexual
OCCUPATION: Owner at the Lunar Heights Pub, a wolf establishment situated on the edge between Inner Vievecor and Chissob Hills.
DISTRICT: Chissob Hills
BACKGROUND:
Jaxon Reed became a member of the Lycaon pack many, many years ago. One might even say that he has been there practically since the very beginning but that was not always the case. He started out as a lone wolf -a rogue, born wolf who used to hang around Aurora, the daughter of one of the Alphas in the area. Rumors said that they were close. Intimate, even, but nothing was ever made official. In fact, not long after those rumors began, the she-wolf was married off to someone else. A necessary means to unify packs, they said, and as if that didn’t break his heart enough, Reed soon learnt she was carrying their kid.
The truth, although unknown to anyone but the couple, made Jaxon distant but not reckless enough to do anything that might put her or their child in danger. So, after a tumultuous exchange, the wolf agreed to keep the whole thing under wraps and did everything right by them…even when it came to respecting her Alpha or the fact that he had a hand in raising his own child. Jax was always there for them and after her husband passed, he took the kid right under his wing, protecting them and continuing to raise them for years to come.
It was shortly after those events, that their pack merged with Lycaon and Jax, too, became part of it. Aurora and him fooled around for a while then but they were never fully together and, eventually, went on different paths, with her taking on the job of leading a pack of female rogues someplace else. Reed, on the other hand, stayed and worked hard to prove himself to the Lycaon alpha, who took him in as his right hand. Over the years, the two developed a close-knit friendship, being there for each other during the most difficult of times and for every big decision. Their connection was obvious to anyone who cared to notice but it was always assumed that it was nothing out of the norm.
This was the case for many years until one night during heat. To call it an accident was a bit of an understatement, especially with her and her husband having grown apart and what became a rather short-lived affair, but they both felt it best not to make anything out of it. Things got a bit rocky after, as they tend to do. The two wolves were still close but jealousy began to creep up and Jaxon was not ready to go through the same thing that he had in his past and, of course, it was expected that her husband noticed something too. That, led to a rather drastic solution.
To this day, Jaxon has been gone for years -enough for people to start wondering whether he was ever going to return but he is finally back and he is to pick up the reigns of his old project: the Lunar Heights Pub. He never offered anybody much of an explanation. All they needed to know was that the Alpha had given him a mission and that it was crucial for him to leave. The truth is between him and Caleb’s mother -but it is rumored that part of the motivation behind it was to put some miles between one another.
Reed does not care much for the Golden Rule but he does respect it as it is in his interest to live by however he chooses to. The only thing he cares about more than anything is to protect his pack.
PERSONALITY: Loyal and charismatic but also somewhat callous and distant to those he does not truly care for. Other words to describe his personality are unpredictable, witty and over-protective.

Wow, difficult question. I would love to name so many people here right now, but theoretically they are asking for one person. On the other hand, this is my blog and theoretically I can answer however I like. However, the difficulty in answering this question is that I am only allowed to name one person. You see the struggle?
Okay this took a moment, but I've decided on @differentfaced. You wonder why? Just look at him! Apart from the fact that Caleb has been in VZ longer than many of you, I know how much heart and soul he has. I'm going to boast about the fact that I was practically there at his beginnings. We lost track of each other for a long time and somehow it feels like a completely different life, but now we have found each other again and I am so proud of what he has become and what little details he has. Even if I am only at the beginning of finding out what is hiding inside this handsome guy. He is an incredibly good writer (Shhh, don't even deny it, I know you want to.) and if you look at his blog, every detail just fits.
I am so so so so so so so very excited to see what adventures we will go on.
(And ladies? This handsome guy is single! Just saying..)

the tag thing was so annoying I had to get Firefox nightly and install an ao3 enhancement extension bc it let me block tags I didn't want to see, basically all the poly fics that show up on a specific pair relationship tag. just giving u some options I do understand how annoying it can get
Hey anon! I appreciate the intent, but like...as in real life, sometimes people like to complain. I love complaining. I have no actual power to stop people from doing this - if someone can be deterred by "will not see heaven" that's great, but let's be real, it will not stop people who do this to get clicks on the basis of false advertising. I do in fact use the exclude tag. The reason I made that post is that I was looking for fic of a ship I like, and got 25 results, and then, when I filtered out the throuple and the much, much, much more popular pairing I'm not interested in, I got 13 results, and I looked up and was like "well this is some fucking bullshit."
But also? No matter how good your tag blocking is? This is a bad system. I think the example I gave wasn't the best one, so let me give a better one: There's a book I like that is about a couple we'll call A/B. The thing is, it's in a series, and A is C's widow. But also, A and C had a private relationship with B for some, but not all of their marriage.
I like all these relationships! A/B, A/C, and A/B/C all existed in canon at different points in time and and have distinct, interesting dynamics. Also, I'm not interested in B/C.
In this case? If I'm searching on A/B/C and I exclude B/C because someone tagged every possible dynamic? I'm missing out on a lot of fic I actually would like. And also? A fic that's a retelling of the literal canonical series should be tagged A/C, A/B, and A/B/C but not B/C, because all those relationships show up in the work! But I did actually go into one of these fics I didn't like and no it's a one-shot of a threesome and they just tagged it with each combination.
(another example from the show's canon is Black Sails; Thomas/James/Miranda and all three individual pairings exist at separate points in time. A fic about Thomas and James in the context of Thomas/James/Miranda is distinctly different than one about Thomas and James after that was over, and like, yeah, I can figure it out, but this would be really easy to filter on if people actually treated a throuple as the unique dynamic it is rather than three couples that happen to overlap.)
Or to give another example: Let's say I'm interested in a really popular ship (I used Critical Role before, I'll do it again). Let's say I want to read Caleb/Essek as a pair and am not interested in any trios right now, but I'm interested in longfic and I don't mind if there are references to past canonical ships with those characters nor references to other characters in platonic relationships with that pairing.
To filter out every possible throuple? I'd have to block literally every single possible throuple tag for a work with like, 7 other main characters and hundreds of other significant characters, for a ship with 3k+ fics, and I have things to do. Like, practically speaking, for popular ships? I just wait for people I already follow to write or recommend things, and don't look in the main ship tag on ao3 at all. It sucks - I'm sure I'm missing out on stuff - but it's far more pleasant than the alternative.
(also like, if you are writing a five person polycule there are 26 individual sub-groups. Are people tagging each of those. If so I do not want to know but I suspect they aren't not in the least because I do not trust the people who got mad about this to know combinatorics)
Anyway my point is I love complaining. I don't expect people to change or stop, to return to my original analogy, shitting on the floor, and I am not looking for advice on how to better step over the many piles of shit they leave. I am just, on my own blog, thinking of them and talking about them the way anyone would think of someone who deliberately shits on the floor and loudly defends their decision to do so.

Going Unreal
Hello. Been a bit.
I wrote this blog post last night for my ModDB page, then it suddenly occurred to me that I could share it here too. So here it is!
Learning a new engine is something that I have wanted to do for years, however due to self imposed mental barriers never followed through with beyond installing Unreal or Godot, opening each once or twice, then returning to the familiar land that is Unity.
I guess my thought process in all this time centred around an idea of diminishing returns, that switching engine would result in a game that was no where near the best of my ability, all due to the fact I didn't have the years of practice with this new engine... I have never released anything for Unity other than a gamejam project so this thought process was flawed from the start, however it persisted.
That was of course until Unity had its big "masks off" moment, henseforth known as "the fuckening".
The Fuckening occurred in the midst of me preparing to return to working on my upcoming collaborative project, GORE. This was a Unity ran boomer shooter that myself and my friend Caleb Ralph have had in the works on and off since 2018. We were making some good progress with it before I had to take an extended leave from the project due to having a baby, and so returning to work on it was an exciting prospect. But that excitement was shattered by The Fuckening.
It's not to do with the money... Being realistic, GORE was never going to make $1million. But after a string of poor business decisions by Unity Technologies (each of which at the time prompted a meeting about potentially switching engine), the sudden jumpscare that was the news being revealed, the "double down" and "You're just confused" attitude by the company and the lack of information on how they plan on enforcing the install checks which are most likely some kind of forced DRM... We were rightly pissed off. We stuck with this engine for the last couple years despite the companies weird compulsion to ditch its developers and their actions kept getting worse. This was the last straw. And with that last straw meant the crumbling of our projects made using the engine, aka GORE.
So what next?
Well GORE didn't die. We didn't plan this for 5 years just to give up now. We just switched engine and started at square one again, as detailed here.
Honestly when writing that post we were under the impression that the engine change would completely bog down development of the game, however it hasn't! As a matter of fact development is now progressing quicker than it ever has before and that's all due to the fact that Unreal Engine 5 has so many quality of life features that should be standard!
Player Controller? That's up and running and with some tweaking will be even better than the one we spent way too long perfecting in Unity.
Decals? No more floating planes! We got actual decals!
Gamemodes? That's just a standard feature in unreal.
I'm baffled by this switch, the wall for so long was the difficulty and time it'd take to learn from square one all over again and yet the switch to Unreal Engine has instead felt like we've been freed! I'm excited for our future using Unreal Engine and now feel more motivated than ever before! GORE will come. It will be great. And many, many more games will come down the road!
Anyway, that's all I wanted to speak about... This is an off the cuff thing that I'm considering making a habit of, maybe in the form of YouTube videos (although with a baby around that might not happen). To any developers out there, give Unreal Engine a proper go. In the immortal words of Todd Howard, It just works!

Two in One
For the On this day Post
I sure do love the scenery of the beach. Since it is so relaxing and calm. That's why Summer is my favorite season because all I like to do in the summer is go to the beach. As well as going to Water parks and swimming pools. As well as if we were to go on a Cruise to another country. And I bet Shadow and Lisa might bring Spot, Vanilla, Maxwell, Sam, Emme and Jo. The same goes if the Parents and the Siblings want to go to the beach as well.
Shadow R 😺🗡️: Mmhmm. It sure is a relaxing thing to do for the Summer.
Lisa 😺❤️⚡: Agree. And I bet the Kids might like to take a Beach trip with us as well. We can hula dance or go swimming or make a sand castle, etc. All those sorts of things we can do.
Shadow R 😺🗡️: That can be a lot of fun!
Lisa 😺❤️⚡: Agreed! 😁
For his new video game he bought himself.
It is really amazing he got his own copy of Gran Turismo 7 for PlayStation 4. Since I have a download version on my PlayStation 5, I'm sure he can enjoy playing the games while doing the same content I was doing. And I know he wants to work on the Circuit Experience cause that's the part one time he wants to beat my time and that is fine, he has his own take and nothing can go wrong. And I wasn't too sure about transferring some of my stuff from Sport cause I'm worried about the whole birthday thing where on my PlayStation account, it has my mom's birthday there. And it's impossible if there is a way to change the date of birth like with Nintendo. Normally I'm sure I can skip the day of April 13th cause that's where my Mom's birthday lands. But I should try the Circuit Experience on 7 as well if I want to practice on some tracks. And if my P-Pal thinks he should fund up some PlayStation money on DLC, that's fine or he can always try the PlayStation Plus if he would like to do Online Races with me. Same for our Friend, Alex if he likes to race with us. But with PlayStation Plus, there are options we have to decide which is better, the Essentials, Extra, or Premium. Speaking of that, I did get a Premium last week, and I'm sure I'll show you guys my process with my experience with the PlayStation Plus Premium. Especially for any classic titles I might be playing on either PlayStation 1, 2, 3 or Portable. Since those games are so classic and even when you stream on some PlayStation 3 titles. But I hope my P-Pal will decide what he would do, even after he finishes the Circuit Experience on Sport.
Shadow R 😺🗡️: And Spot, Riya, Miya and Bonn. I hope you four will be ready if you four like to race with me, Tory, Lisa and Caleb if we got to compete in the Gran Turismo League.
Lisa 😺❤️⚡: We'll be counting on you Speedsters! 🙂👍
Tory 😺🩰: Same goes for the Experiences. 😁

New Post has been published on https://www.packernet.com/blog/2023/08/22/spackle-with-trade/
Spackle with trade?
It’s nail-biting time for guys on “the bubble.” The 53-man roster limit needs to be reached by this coming Tuesday. It’s not fun when people lose their jobs, or their dreams. But every pro-athlete knows the risks and competition for roster spots.
Some of the players released will surprise no one. I’ll never forget when Forrest Gregg released QB Lynn Dickey, or when Ted Thompson shocked us by releasing Guard Josh Sitton. This year, my surprise cut prediction is Josiah Deguara, already one of many questionable Packer 3rd round draft picks.
TBA Packer
Who cares about fringe roster spots anyway? The curiosity should be on players not on the roster, yet.
Packers GM Brian Gutekunst should be looking to shore up a weak position from a position of strength. That means, deal an offensive tackle in the interest of landing a safety or tight end.
The Packers have, arguably, 5-offensive tackles that could start on 15-20 teams across the NFL. While quality tackles are in short supply the Packers boast David Bakhtiari, Zach Tom, Yosh Nijman, Rasheed Walker and Caleb Jones. Although he’s less proven, Walker appears to have jumped Nijman on the depth chart. If the Packers could get value, trading Nijman makes the most sense.
Thin TE
The Packers future at tight end looks bright. The present looks a bit shaky. Off-season losses of Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis, combined with a season ending knee injury to Tyler Davis leaves the Packers thin at tight end. Draft investments made in Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft are great, but rookies are notoriously slow contributors at the position. The current 3rd TE, Austin Allen, is just a guy, likely suited for the practice squad.
There are too many possible trade targets to guess, but trading for one feels quite possible. They need to replace Davis’s blocking and special teams reliabilty so I wouldn’t expect a big name. If Gutey doesn’t trade, expect a free agent signing like they did last year with Rudy Ford at Safety.
Safety looks unsafe
Speaking of dumpster fires, there’s the safety position. Darnell Savage will start at one safety spot, due to marginal alternatives. After that you could throw a dart at the others and might hit a guy who will start or get cut. Jonathan Owens, Rudy Ford, Tarvarius Moore and Anthony Johnson Jr. have all looked forgettable, unless your idea of memorable is missed tackles and uninspired play. 7th round pick Johnson Jr. seems a roster lock, as Gutekunst is known to hang onto his picks. But after Savage, there is no obvious second starter.
Yosh Nijman re-signed as a restricted free agent, at a 2nd round tender, which means he’d be low risk at a manageable cost. So many NFL teams are starved for legit left or right tackles, it seems like moving Nijman could return value. I think it’s a move they can and will make. The only question: do they want a better safety, tight-end or to just bank some draft capital?
