TV reviews - Geddy Lee Asks: Are Bassists Human Too? / John Lennon: Murder Without a Trial

This week I got to review two unscripted mini-series that both dropped recently on streamers.

Geddy Lee Asks: Are Bassists Human Too?

As the singer and bassist for Rush, Geddy Lee has amassed quite a cult following. They were a thinking man's rock trio where you literally felt smarter just for listening to them. I went through a serious Rush phase as a teen. I had heard their hits, but began buying their 70s CDs one by one. I even learned some of their songs when I was taking guitar lessons. 2112, their epic rock opera, is my personal fave of their discography. In 1996, I saw the band live at the Meadowlands in NJ. Fantastic live band too. Now, Lee is getting his own limited unscripted series Geddy Lee Asks: Are Bassists Human Too? which premiered on Paramount+ last week.

Produced by Banger Films and directed by Sam Dunn (who directed the Rush doc Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage as well as Super Duper Alice Cooper, and ZZ Top: That Little Ol' Band from Texas, this is sort of like Geddy Lee's version of a travel show, where a host visits a different location each episode, talks to a local (or many), and takes in the local food and culture. The four episodes that have been released are Lee speaking with Les Claypool of Primus and The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Robert Trujillo of Metallica, Melissa Auf der Maur of Hole and Smashing Pumpkins, and Krist Novoselic of Nirvana and 3rd Secret. Lee goes to their home, does activities with them and eventually talks and plays music with them. It is very much insider-baseball for musicians.

Lee is an engaging figure and a great host. All of these subjects so far have been bassists who came along after Rush and in some cases there was overlap between their band and Rush, but I think it might be interesting if the next season was bassists who pre-dated Rush. As a huge fan of Novoselic and Auf der Maur, and very familiar with Claypool and Trujillo, I of course was fully engaged in their rapport and conversation. Novoselic showing Lee his grange and flying with him on his plane is something I could watch all day! In some instances, it's Lee discovering things he hasn't done before like surfing with Trujillo. This is a cool show for music geeks, but beyond Paul McCartney the average person can't name too many bassists, so it's nice to see bassists talking shop and then some!

John Lennon: Murder Without a Trial

The December 8, 1980 murder of John Lennon outside his NYC apartment building at the hands of deranged "fan" Mark David Chapman is one of the great tragedies in that he was such a tremendous talent taken from us at age 40 way before his time. I was only about 4 when it happened, so I don't have any "where were you when Lennon was shot" memories (although I was into the Yellow Submarine movie). In later years as I got into The Beatles and Lennon's solo work, I saw many documentaries and specials about that tragedy. Not only was Lennon in a good place and happy with wife Yoko Ono and raising his 5 year-old son Sean, but he had just released a new album Double Fantasy, his first in five years and you got the sense it was the start of a big comeback. I've visited the Lennon memorial Strawberry Fields in Central Park many times. But I digress. The tragic murder is now a 3-part documentary mini-series John Lennon: Murder Without a Trial, which just premiered on Apple TV+.

Narrated by Kiefer Sutherland, this is a deep dive into the day of the murder (what Lennon was doing leading up to the assassination, what Chapman was doing), the investigation, the trial and outcome.

Anyone who reads this blog, knows I am a lifelong Beatle and Lennon fanatic. Just recently, I got to review the documentary The Lost Weekend: A Love Story about May Pang’s relationship with Lennon and I also got to review the re-release of The Beatles’ Red and Blue albums. So I went into this very familiar with the subject. The thing that impressed me most was the depth of interview subjects, i.e. cab drivers that night, police and law enforcement that night, Dakota employees and residents, hospital staff and more. Hearing their recollections and some of the archival footage are quite impressive. But the thing that Lennon fans needs to understand going into this is that this is more of a true crime doc than a music or celebrity doc. I say this because there are very few Lennon musical collaborators other than producer Jack Douglas, and Yoko and Sean are shown in archival footage. There have been some fantastic Lennon docs in the past, notably Imagine: John Lennon (possibly the best Lennon doc there's been), The U.S. vs. John Lennon, and LennoNYC. This one is very much looking into the crime itself, the legal ramifications and the outcome. Do not expect to learn much about Lennon himself here if you're a fan, but you might learn quite a bit about Chapman (not that you necessarily want to know more about that monster). As a documentarian I can appreciate this doc series, but as Lennon fan I wanted a little more about Lennon, his family and the recording he was doing at that time, and it only scratched that surface.

Eddie Munson Headcanons - Late 20s Edition

Slightly nsfw here and there, just some things in my head that came up while plotting for fics and stuff

He may have moved into his own apartment, but he visits uncle Wayne at least three times a week to make sure that he's doing alright and eats properly (and because he misses him, but shh)

He’s really good with kids, and an excellent babysitter for his friends. He talks on eye level with them and with his imagination, he’s the best at telling stories. He can captivate a whole group of little kids with these stories. He’s the nice version of the Pied Piper, because children just flock to him - and of course he answers all their questions about his tattoos and his wild hair.

He wants kids himself, always has, he’s just too scared that he will end up like his own father (cue The Amazing Devil with “I will be the man my father never was”), but everybody tells him that he will be a great Dad, especially because he had uncle Wayne as a role model, who took care of a child that wasn’t even his own and showered him with love.

Eddie loves his job, no matter what he ends up doing. Of course, there will always be bad days, but that happens in every job. Still, he is happy at the end of the day, because he gets to do something that he loves.

Mechanic!Eddie comes home from work all greasy and more often than not ends up dragging you to the shower immediately before he gets the whole apartment dirty. This way, he just gets you dirty and gets to clean you up as well, taking his time with soaping you up, because he can’t get enough of touching your body.

Tattoo-Artist!Eddie loves spending time drawing his ideas on your body. Like a phoenix on your back, delicate flowers on your arm, but he especially enjoys drawing on your thighs, draping them over his own legs, and letting his hands travel where they don’t need to be in order for him to paint on you, but you don’t mind at all. It’s therapeutic, the ways he cherished your body.

Rockstar!Eddie misses you whenever he’s on tour, because you can’t come along most of the time. You give him a shirt of yours to take along, while he leaves his favourite sweater with you to wear at night, when you miss him most, especially during the cold months. (I have Hedley’s Sweater Song in my head all the time) At least these nights spent apart lead to both of you learning the joys of phone sex, only for Eddie to drive back after their last concert to get to you instead of waiting till the next day.

Record-Shop-Owner!Eddie (probably my fave) enjoys a few moments of silence once he gets home after being surrounded by music all day. He knows just the right album/single for everyone, and you’ll catch him singing along all the time. The shop is neatly organised so that he finds whatever he’s looking for immediately, and over the time, he’s collected a lot of polaroids with the people he loves and musicians as well that, and these photos are all over the wall behind the counter.

Eddie loves teaching kids to play the guitar (whether it’s in his free time or he makes it a part time job). These kids are just so eager to learn, and Eddie is extremely patient with them, because he would never stop someone from learning something new. He’d the encouragement they sometimes need, when they do not get that from their parents.

Whenever he sees you after you’ve spent some days apart, he’ll hug you close and not let you go for at least five minutes, burying his nose in the crook of your neck, breathing you in, mapping your body with his hands as if he might have forgotten what you feel like - which is ridiculous, because he could never forget, but he always likes to remind himself of how perfect you feel beneath his fingers.

He’s insecure about his scars at first, and that insecurity bubbles up all the time, but you always manage to take that insecurity away, when you use his own words. He always tells you that your scars are just telling the story of your life, that they are a part of you. That your stretch marks are tiger stripes, proof of how strong you really are. So you tell him that, that his scars are a part of him just like his tattoos, that they show what he’s overcome, and as soon as you kiss them, Eddie doesn’t care about them anymore, he only cares about you.

He whispers the most inappropriate things in your ear whenever you’re around your friends, because he knows how much that riles you up, and that you’ll pretty much jump into his arms the moment you’re alone. He knows just how to push your buttons, but so do you.

Eddie loves learning how to cook from you, and in his late twenties, he’s become quite a good cook, so that he surprises you with a home cooked meal when he has a day off work. It doesn’t always work out in his favour, and sometimes, he still burns this or that, but you still love the effort he puts in, because he puts so much love in everything he does for you.

He enjoys it even more when you cook together, all the domestic little things, because it brings you closer together. Arguing over which colour to paint the wall - because black wasn’t an option, but you let him talk you into getting a dark blue kitchen - or which sofa to get for the living room, but in the end, most of these decisions were easy.

Eddie is someone who tried to fix everything himself at first. Leaky faucet? He’ll try his best. The lamp keeps flickering (and no, not because of Vecna or some other creepy shit), he’ll check it out. He wants to do all of this himself, and he’ll pout when you call someone to fix it, because he couldn’t or would have probably electrocuted himself. But you always make it up to him and quickly take his mind off things.

Eddie doesn’t mind using toys in the bedroom. He’s not one of those people who get intimidated because you have a vibrator or anything, no, he’s actually quite interested in everything. Apart from the “show me how you do it” part, and loving to watch you, he also loves to use them on you himself, use them while you two are having fun, because he knows that these toys are not his enemies, they are his friends.

What were your favorite things to draw when you were a lil kid? When I was a very little kid, idk. But once I got into meerkats... I drew them like crazy. What things would immediately catch your eye? Ugh, let's not. When did you feel the most confident in your life? Probably my senior year of high school. I was happy with Jason with plans for the future together, I was doing excellently in school... I thought I was really going to go somewhere. Do you think love is needed to have good sex? For some people, no. For me, loving one another is an absolute must. Do you think, or want to, die in the city you currently live in? Fuuuuuuuck no, I hate it here. I don't know; I was never a big fan, so I don't know any of them as people well at all. Have you ever texted an ex whilst drunk? How’d that go? I've never been drunk, but no, I've never texted an ex because I was drinking. Do you have to stand on your tip-toes to kiss your boyfriend? I don't have one. The only instance where I had to do that was with Girt. Tall motherfucker. Have you ever been tackle-hugged? Yes. Those are the best. Have you ever rejected someone’s kiss before? Girt once tried to make out with me and I noped the fuck outta that situation. It was so fucking awkward. Is your mood or the overall tone of your day often affected by the dreams you had the night before? My nightmares definitely can. Do you think that there are any positive aspects or outcomes of suffering from a mental illness? If you have a mental illness, do you think it has changed you for the better in any way? I definitely believe my mental illnesses forced me to mature faster and also instilled a great sense of empathy in me. And don't forget emotional endurance. What is your opinion on celebrity culture and celebrity worship? Have you ever been guilty of putting a celebrity on a pedestal? Do you think it’s somehow more acceptable/understandable to obsess over certain types of celebrities (musicians over YouTubers, say) than others? At what point do you think an obsession like that crosses the line? It's dangerous and can be very blinding. An outsider could say I put Mark on a pedestal, but I've always been very aware that he's not perfect and really just another human, I just happen to love him a lot for the human he is, haha. As time's passed, my vision of him has become healthier though (not to say it ever reached the "unhealthy" threshold); it's gotten easier for me to judge him and stuff like that. I think an obsession crosses the line when you put on rose-tinted glasses to look upon someone and entirely ignore their flaws, or if you try to invade their personal lives, ex. being one of those creeps that loiter outside their houses and stuff. If you were to pursue a career in photography and had the opportunity and means to photograph whatever you wanted, what would most like to photograph? Ah, livin' the dream. If I had to choice and would be paid well regardless of focus, I would absolutely travel and photograph the local nature/wildlife. Is there a certain type of clothing (outerwear, activewear, loungewear, etc.) that you enjoy shopping for more than others? Shirts, 100%. Are you ever afraid to post your ideas, artwork, photography, etc. online for fear that they will get stolen or not credited? When it comes to OCs, yes, given that things have been stolen from me before. Photography doesn't worry me much because I don't think I'm good enough for someone to possibly want to steal it (and besides, I use a watermark), and I do the same for drawings. It's the unique characters I make I worry about being stolen if I share them. When is the last time you did something sexual? A few years back. Who is the last person you showered with, if anyone? I haven't showered with someone since I was a little kid and my younger sister and I would to conserve water. What do you think when you see roadkill on the side of the road? It really makes me genuinely sad, and I always wonder if it could have been avoided if the driver was more alert, slower, and thinking about more than the damage it could cause to their car... I enjoy photographing roadkill, brutal as it may be, out of respect for them and the desire to make their individual stories known and just kind of like, raise awareness of it. Too many people are just annoyed by hitting an animal versus more concerned. "Stupid deer," stuff like that. I sometimes worry that doing so can be interpreted as disrespect, to photograph and publish pictures of their corpses online, but I sure hope not. It's the least of my intentions. I just want people to see and care. Have you ever had an ex that just didn’t understand that it was over? Biiiitch I was that ex, 120%. But besides my situation with Jason, this was how Tyler was. I had to tell him about five thousand times to stop texting me. Are your fingernails currently short or long? They're always pretty short. Would you rather have big or small dogs? I like medium-sized dogs most. I'd have to pick large dogs between the two, though. What is your favorite sports drink? I'm not a fan of sports drinks. What was the last compliment you gave a guy? Yesterday, a guy in PHP shared two poems he wrote while hospitalized, and they were wonderful, so full of passion and emotion. I sure as hell told him they were amazing. He's going for his Master's for poetry, so he knows what he's doing for real. Does your jaw ever crack, pop, or lock? It's popped on very, very few occasions. Have you ever thought of how you would give your kids “the talk”? I don't want kids, so no, I've never thought of this. I certainly wouldn't wait for sex ed in school, though. I feel like it's a bit late. I feel children need to know what it's about at a younger age with how disgusting some people are... I want them to be informed on what consent and molestation are so they know to let Mama know so I can punch someone's face into a whole new galaxy if they're ever violated. Do you ever feel like you’re missing out on something? Oh, always. Do you ever write/draw on windows that are fogged up? I did as a kid, sure. Not so much now. If you were married, and your spouse’s parents became ill, would you let them move into your home? If they were truly sick enough to need assistance but not actual hospitalization, yes. I'd want my spouse to do the same for me. Have you screamed in a pillow before? Yyyyep. What do you like more, acoustic or electric? Electric. Did you actually have a cookie jar? We have a Santa one, though I don't even know if we ever used it versus just having it as a decoration. What’s worse, having someone mad or disappointed in you? Disappointed. What do you bite on more, your tongue, lip, or nails? Bottom lip. Do you think that knowing when and how you’re going to die would ruin your life? "Ruin" it seems a bit extreme, but I definitely wouldn't like it. Do you have a favorite bromance? From TV or a movie. Not really, if we're only talking those two options. Do you find flea markets and thrift stores enjoyable? Yeah, you really can find the coolest shit for great prices. What color is your wallet? Mostly red and white; it's a Harley Quinn design. Have you ever been somebody's photography subject? No. Nicki Minaj fan? I believe she's a very talented rapper, but I don't enjoy her actual music. I just don't like rap. if you can imagine anything horrible or abusive happening, it happened here. he wasn’t outright physical with her, there were no black eyes, but he did exert his power over her in other ways (controlling what she ate, her style of dress, jealous fits if she talked to other guys, etc).

there was one horrible incident too many though, and finally it dawned on emma that she needed to get out.

with the help of an old friend, Ben, she packed most of her shit and her dog and left while Tomo was away on a tour.

she hasn’t heard from him since, but does lowkey live in fear.

has been going to therapy for the past year or so, which has proven invaluable for the ptsd/trauma from the relationship.

despite all this, she still loves him and knows her saving grace is the fact they live on opposing ends of the state.

An assortment of headcanons! - Kaito loves dogs- When Kaito was a kid, due to all the lore of the constellations and stuff, he would always imagine himself as a greek/roman hero fighting monsters and becoming a constellation himself in the stars- Hoshi teaches Kaito how to gamble…better. He’s still bad at it though.- For Kaito’s birthday everyone got together and rented him a planetary so they could all celebrate together. Kaito kept trying to run off because he didn’t want them to see him crying tears of joy.- Naegi and Kaito are a dangerous pair of optimism. Don’t even involve Kaede. It’s dangerous. Nothing is impossible.

At first Tsumugi was just there, but then she really picked up and I love how she’s a deadpan snarker basically! And the blues used on her palette are pretty as well!

She then asked her classmates to keep count of how many cosplays they saw. The number ranged from 25-71. 52-53 seemed to be the common answer however.- Tsumugi once held a con booth with Angie. It was as wild as it sounds.- Tsumugi and Kirumi talk frequently, for Kirumi is able to assist Tsumugi when she makes cosplays and is able to give solid opinions as well- Tsumugi is the class matchmaker sorry I don’t make the rules.- This …isn’t really a hc per se but . . *coughs* so in the future if Tsumugi and Angie had a child, that artist would be a “con-artist” con artist. They go to cons selling artwork that isn’t theirs or they try to rip people off.

Everything? I legit love everything about Kaede. I love her flaws and her imperfections. She’s a musician, she’s my favorite colours, she hecking plays piano, she’s outgoing and funny and a lovable goof ball.

Gonta is a gentleman! He’s so nice and honestly, if there is one person out there who will help me get rid of my fear of bugs, it’s him!

So far Gonta is just placing them in the areas where he wants the messages to go to, but he says they are making great progress!- Gonta has a bug named after all of his friends. Bonus: Ouma’s is a Ashy Gray Lady Beetle and Ouma tries to steal it every time. It’s the only bug he likes.- If you try to kill a bug Gonta is there. He’s always there. WHEW! That was a lot! Hopefully I managed to do this justice!
