Fanfic Writer Interview
Tagged by: @a-most-beloved-fool - thank you!! <3 <3 <3
What fandoms do you write in? At the moment, pretty much just DS9, though I've written one TOS ficlet this year.
How many words have you published in 2024? 139, 411 😅😅 Absolutely bananas, I cannot even comprehend how I did that!
It's been an absolaute delight to properly fall in love with writing this year though ❤️Before 2024, I'd written very little fanfic ever, and this has been JUST so much fun! (ftr, 3.5k in 2021, ~3k in 2015, and - huh! Almost 30k in 2011/12 🧐 Well, that's a surprise - apparently my "baby's first fanfic" back in 2012 was a whole 20k, which is far longer than I remember!)
What is your greatest achievement this year? I mean, Vision Awry for sure! Seeing it grow and grow and slowly realising just how long it was becoming (although even right up to the end, I was never able to guess accurately!) My crazy summer marathon to get it all written before I resumed posting (which I did mostly manage!) and then the last few weeks in December pouring my heart and soul into actually finishing it before the end of the year. It's completely mad that I did that!
(Although weirdly, now it's finished it's just kind of like 'yeah I suppose I did that, feels ages ago now though' and I feel like I have to really push myself to feel the pride and excitement I think I should be feeling? Idk, it's weird 😅)
What are your top three fics you've written this year? Oh gosh, I have to choose? Okay...
Vision Awry - obviously :P
Sleep Paralysis - that mad, 3-day blitz of inspiration was so worth hiding away in my room for 😅
Um, unpublished, but the Miles&Julian-talk-about-suicide ficlet I posted on Tumblr? It was far better than I expected when I read it back, and was a higlight amongst the rest of the December writing-is-hard feels.
What was your biggest pit of despair moment? There were definitely many times during Vision Awry... the biggest were probably either:
Re-starting Day 5 in August, after writing nothing during June and July, and reailsing I had no idea what was going to happen in Day 5 apart from the deaths at the end;
Writing Epilogue 3 in the last few weeks, only eking out 1-300 words at a time unless I overdosed on meds (😅 it worked tho...), getting increasingly convinced that I was not going to be finishing by the end of the year, which sucked; or
Any time I realised the scene wasn't working because of X thing which meant I would need to totally rewrite it. I don't do drafts, really, so that was always devastating 😭 (but DID work out for the best, at least)
What have you learned? SO, so much. I'll limit myself to three things. (I'm sorry, I'm no good at choices or being concise!)
That if I have an idea, ideally I need to write all of it, straight away, and finish it while it’s fresh. I honestly don’t know how many WIPs I’m actually going to finish, because even while I love many of the ideas, I’m not in love with them the same way I was when I started.
That I love writing Garak and Julian interactions, even though I keep forgetting that I do, because Garak is an absolute pain to write sometimes (affectionate), and I've never been the biggest fan of stories that are solely Garashir.
That I need to be super careful about opening up prompts, because while they’re great for short-term motivation, if I don't complete them in a timely manner they end up hanging over me in a less-than-fun way.
What three fics have you read this year that you love? I do not know where to start with this one, omg, there are too many <3 <3 <3 Trying to think of ones I haven't mentioned before... (and while I'm trying to be better, I'm so bad at bookmarks 😅)
After The Siege by @youngpettyqueen - I didn't know I needed Worf&Julian but this has stayed in my mind since April and I love it to pieces. This dynamic is soooo gooddd 💕💕
The Recitation of Names by @jennelikejennay - Incredible, haunting, pre-TOS Spirk fic about the events mentioned in Obsession.
By Design by @akingnotaprincess - I haven't finished it yet (I am SO hype though, I just haven't had time over Christmas!) but it's SUCH a lovely Data/Julian fic, it's so sweet and sincere and wonderful.
What ideas are percolating for next year? Ughhhh, oh man. Idek. I've got about a dozen WIPs but the way my brian is rn, I'm just hoping that I'll be able to edit and publish some of the things I've written on Tumblr to finally put on AO3.
Hopefully I'll get going a bit more at some point - and whatever it is, you can bet on a traumatised Juian, I'm pretty sure ;)
Who do you want to thank? Again, where do I even start, there are so many people who have made this year wonderful 💕 I've never really felt like I've been *in* a Tumblr community before, and this year has really changed that, so a huge thank you to everyone who's made me feel so welcome! 🥰
@ectogeo-rebubbles, @the-last-dillpickle, @hellostuffedtiger for welcoming me into the Sloanshir side of DS9 with aplomb. Waking up to your reviews and recs of Imprisoned was actually unforgettable, it made my day many, many times over, and definitely gave me confidence to continue putting Julian into fucked-up situations!
@jackleg-penwright for messaging me and becoming my first Tumblr friend ❤️❤️❤️
@flippetyfloppity, @dreamerdrop, @phoenixfeathersinfall - your comments are life and love itself, your support for my writing this year has been incredible and made me feel so warm, thank you just so much! 🫂🫂🫂
I'm kind of High Key Anxious about missing anyone out if I tried to tag everyone else who has been supportive and wonderful and lovely, which sucks because I really want to, but if you've ever left a comment on anything I've done, PLEASE know that you are held in my heart most fondly with great love and affection 💖💖💖
tagging: @jackleg-penwright, @dreamerdrop, @ectogeo-rebubbles and anyone else who would like to!
#personal#writing feels#i already feel like i'm missing people out form my thank yous who really should be there 😭😭#i'm really so sorry if i have <3 <3#this was such a lovely thing to work through though#even though it's incredibly hard to ever list my top 3 of anything 😅#this took me so long XD#wsb

ohmygod i literally just made an account on letterboxd bc i watched saw (2004) and loved it so much and ur interview was so inspiring to me and ive been on an absolute craze trying to reblog like every single saw post on tumblr and i somehow found your account what the heck?!!?!?! ur art is AMAZING and i absolutely love ur takes on saw as a franchise and its significance to the queer community. i hope to be as knowledgeable of this franchise as you are one day despite me only being a baby saw fan!!
i had a quick question; i found on the saw heritage post blog that they thought leigh/james/someone else confirmed that saw (2004) did not actually occur the day before 9/11 despite the phone given to them being set to that date. however, when i asked them if they knew where this source was from (bc im so curious!!! i want to know everything!!!!!!) but neither they nor i could find the actual source for that so i was wondering if maybe u knew??? just curious :3
regardless ty for taking the time to read this and dedicating so much time to this fandom!! i love that horror fans like you exist in a fandom that i previously thought would be weird and slightly disturbed film bros (i had a lot of incorrect preconceived notions about saw that have been quickly resolved i promise)
thank you!! im glad that people feel the same way about it as i do but even if people thought i was some crazy transexual making everyone else woke and pronouns, i wouldnt care. the story, especially lawrences but adams as well, really resonates with me as a trans person for so so many reasons, more than i listed in the interview. to me, i cant read his character without filling in the gaps with trans subtext. it not only explains but also enriches the personal experiences of these characters as well as their dynamics with each other. theyre both characters that are defined primarily by how theyre seen by other people, themselves, and eventually each other. the narrative is soooo focused on perception and masks and who u truly are, i find it hard to separate any kind of queer theory from that.
as for the 9/11 question thats such a dumbass pet peeve of mine. its one of the things that makes me shout UMMMM ACTUALLY at the top of my lungs. my blood pressure sours to inhuman levels when someone confidently says the movie takes place not just in 2001 but the day before 9/11. not because of some interview or confirmation from any of the crew because my knowledge of old fandom history is incredibly spotty. old sites and interviews r a mystery to me for the most part BUT! the reason it is for sure not before 9/11 is because during the flashback of pauls trap (during lawrences monologue about jigsaw) kerry tapp and sing are all at the scene with other officers and i believe its kerry who holds up an evidence bag thats labeled 2004. the scene takes place 5 months before the events of saw 1 so its not possible that it takes place 3 years before that. it just seemed like a funny (but insanely bold considering how 9/11 was only 3 years before) joke and easter egg for people to catch on to, not actual lore meant to be taken seriously.
if u want to look for the interview, i would honestly just listen to the commentary tracks bc it mightve been said there. i know in the one with leigh, james, and cary they discuss plot holes fans complained about, questions fans had online, the fanfic they read (briefly LOL). ive only seen that one (and once) but theres at least 2 other commentary tracks with different people that i havent gotten around to for fear of like. completing saw? idk i cant bring myself to watch all of the commentary tracks but theres a chance they discuss it there! i can only speculate on the reason, all i know is that saw 2004 takes place in 2004 based on actual evidence from the media itself
if u have any other questions let me know. i still have the original draft of the interview which had more questions and longer responses bc i couldve gone on for days abt the lore and saw queer theory and ill never shut up about it

hiiii!
Your blog is soooo marvelously made, it feels like...home in a way that brings up so many melancholic memories of something I experienced only in my dreams somehow.
I loved Troy as a child (yes, i watched it with my mom when I was ten or eleven ehhh), and it is one of my biggest comfort movies. I know the fandom is so little, almost feels nonexistent but I just wanted to hop in and thank you for keeping it alive!
p.s: no promises, but I'm having an Achilles fic in my drafts, and I'm planning to become active member and writer for this movie here (and a sustainer of yours) , on Tumblr. Sending lots of love to you, dear!
OMG YOU ARE SO SWEET, THANK YOU 💕💕💕
I see why my blog can give some nostalgia vibes, because almost everything I post about is old stuff. Some less forgotten than others, but most of my most persistent interests are old.
Same!!! I watched it on cable as a kid with my sister, mom let us watch it but didn't monitor us because seeing Orlando Bloom on it made her think it was a lotr like " historical stuff" of the kind she found long- boring and didn't want to stick to watch lol. Little me became quickly obsessed, and after all this time here I am again hehe. I grew up to troy the same way i did to lotr, evolving through a lifetime of rewatchings and learning to love all the characters.
Welcome, dear! And thanks again for your appreciation of my work for the fandom 💕
Don't worry, no need to rush that fic writing but i will be excited to see what you have for us ( specially knowing it's with my favorite man. My years of fic writing as an adult got me a bit of an Achilles obsession lol) Currently, the only other troytuals I have still active here are @alysinwonderland-at-tea and @themuseinthewoods. Check on their wonderfull blogs too, our small fic writing community is awesome 😊
#you know when people on the lotr fandom do jokes of appreciating even the most random of characters?#i do that with troy too#odysseus' charioteer and lisander are like random good looking gondorian soldier#i talk about brad pitt's heel injury and can point out to you the exact minute when it happened#like with viggo mortensen's injury in the two towers#i have rewatched troy as many times as i did with lotr#in childhood i got my troy dvd disc scratched for so much use and my parents had to buy it again for me#because i was heartbroken#asks#messages#troy 2004#troy#troy 2004 positivity#troy fandom

Okay so I fucked up with the original post as it wouldn’t let me edit it from drafts after putting a video in there, so I had to start from scratch. So this was the ask, thank you @practically-an-x-man !

Oh wow this is quite a lot to get through! Alrighty let's get going.
Alexander Summers:

First impression:
l'm just going to talk about movie Alex, because I have other thoughts on comic Alex. I knew Lucas Till from other things like Hannah Montana and the YBWM music video, and also because after the drama with Ezra Miller everyone wanted LT to play the new movie flash, so I remember recognising this face when I first watched FC and thinking "oh yeah he's cute", and I liked his whole broody demeanour, but like, that was it. He became an honorary fave just because I knew he was around the mansion when Peter would've been young, so he was in a lot of the 'Cherik raise Peter' fics.
Impression now:
Jamie will tell you that I always develop a love for the more 'obscure’ characters in media, the smaller amount of screen time, the more likely I am to become obsessed. And so when I went back to rewatch the movies I was just pulled in when it came to Alex. I thought he was so interesting with soooo much potential, his dark but almost juvenile demeanour was like a hook, and I loooove his relationship with Charles. It's also amazing to get to experience a movie you love with a new found appreciation for a certain character because you notice so many new things. Every acting choice LT made for this role l've picked up on now, not to sound dramatic but every little detail helps fuel how I see Alex as a character/person, which is someone with so much complexity and depth.
Favourite moment:
Pretty much all of his scenes in Apocalypse, except his death. Even though I prefer FC, I love seeing how much he's grown and how much he's improved just in general. It's so lovely. But also this one specific deleted scene from FC that gives me all the feels,
Idea for a story:
I have a lot of ideas for Alex in the works, they're mainly on hold just because I went to uni this past September so l've been taking a fanfiction writing/reading break. My current main fic that l'm working on (that Jamie will be happy about), is Alex meeting and bonding with six/seven year old Scott after Vietnam. You'll know because you've read my fic but I picture Alex's relationship to be very strained with his parents, but he's making an effort because he's like, 89% sure Scott's going to be a mutant and he doesn't want him to have to deal with the same reactions he got all by himself.
I also have ideas around an OC of mine but I don't tend to talk about my OCs very much.
Unpopular opinion:
Hmm. The Alex fandom is very small so I don't think there are many 'unpopular' opinions. If we circle back to comic Alex, l'm not really a big fan of any of his romantic relationships. I like the characters respectively, I just don't tend to like them together.
Also I just prefer Alex to Scott, which isn't unpopular but it'll piss Jamie juice off :)
Favourite relationship:
Love love love looooove his platonic mentor-student relationship with Charles.
Favourite Headcanon:
Love the idea of Alex picking up on Charles’ British slang while living at the mansion between FC and DoFP. He wouldn’t say them in a British accent, but he’d say things like jacket potato, not baked potato (the second chapter of that fic will be dropping soon), and football instead of soccer, and I feel like Charles would really appreciate it because it would be something Raven used to do. Although I see her doing it in more of a teasing way compared to Alex, Alex is just adapting to his surroundings.
Hank McCoy:

First impression:
I remember quite liking Hank when I first watched FC, I don’t think I had a huge opinion on him but I did enjoy his presence. I liked his bashful relationship with Raven and I think Nicholas Hoult played the character well. He was like in between Alex and then Cherik and Peter for me, I cared about his presence because he was often involved with my top three, but he wasn’t obscure enough for me to develop a proper obsession with.
Impression now:
Kind of the same to be honest, if anything I think I may have gone off him a little bit. Not because of anything huge, but the way he is with Raven in that one scene in FC irks me a little. I do understand his reasoning, as someone with a physical ‘deformity’, I’d do anything to fix it, but I’m also like dude don’t tell this girl she’s not naturally gorgeous-. But overall I do still like him, and I did like his ending in DP too. (Even though I don’t like DP.)
Favourite moment:
Either when he and Logan are fighting in the foyer in DoFP or just his involvement with the montage in FC. Him being like “am I still a bozo?” to Alex, like bro what do you think the obnoxious little blond is gonna say-.
Idea for a story:
I like the idea of potentially writing a small oneshot about Alex and Hank having a conversation, maybe just before Alex leaves for Vietnam. I feel like it’s the only time they’d ever have a vulnerably emotional moment together. Alex wouldn’t admit to Charles he’s worried about going, and Hank would’ve picked up on enough of Alex’s social behaviours to realise it.
Unpopular opinion:
Not sure if this is unpopular but I don’t really ship him endgame with Raven. I ship them as a midgame, but if she had lived in the new timeline I don’t think they would’ve lasted, I think they’re a classic case of right person, wrong time. They were at totally different stages of life.
Favourite relationship:
Love his annoying brotherly relationship with Alex, and his mentor relationship with Charles.
Favourite headcanon:
Sean was the one who got Hank to smoke his first joint, and Hank was so concerned about what it would do to his brain/mutation that he caved and told Charles, as if they aren’t all adults who can make their own informed decisions. I don’t like reducing characters to a caricature, but the idea of Hank shyly telling Charles he’s stoned and has some minor concerns is so funny to me.
Patricia Thornton:

First impression:
In typical Summer fashion, Thornton wasn’t a favourite when I started MacGyver, that was solely Mac and Jack. I just thought she was pretty and badass, and I really enjoyed her banter with Jack. That was kind of all I thought on her.
Impression now:
I. Love. Her. Literally she is such an icon. I came to appreciate her pretty quickly because I binged a lot of MacGyver while I was recovering from my hip surgery, and then when I found out about the traitor storyline I was devastated. I love her snark, her facial expressions, how much of an amazing spy she actually was? I still love her relationship with Jack but I’ve also come to appreciate how she was with Mac and Riley. She wasn’t a helicopter boss/parent, but it’s so clear that beneath the sternness and consistent annoyance, she loved those brats so much.
Favourite moment:
During the Christmas episode, at the end, she’s talking to Mac by the Christmas tree and it’s a clear moment of how she wasn’t just the boss of this team, she was also a friend. She kisses Jack’s cheek, she lets Bozer touch her, she and Mac talk about Christmas gifts, I love it. (I also love her in the fourth episode of season one where she’s beating the shit out of people.
Idea for a story:
I want to write more of her and Mac, I like the idea of her going to see him in the hospital after the incident in S1E1, but he’s at a generic hospital in Italy, and when she and Jack arrive the doctors are like “are you guys family to the patient? 🤔” and they’re like “uh…”. And Jack is like “oh yeah, we’re his aunt and uncle, this is my wife” on a whim and Thornton looks at him like she’s going to take off her shoe and shove the heel up his nose.
Unpopular opinion:
She’s better than Matty. That’s ragingly unpopular but to me she just is, I prefer her dynamic with everyone compared Matty’s character to dynamic with them. And there’s no problem with Matty, I just haven’t warmed to her, like at all. I don’t find banter in her sternness, whereas with Thornton it was more of an exasperation.
Favourite relationship:
I love all of her relationships with the main team, Mac’s is probably my favourite, but I do love how she is with Riley, and Bozer. They’re like her exhausting children and she’s just DONE. And of course her love-hate relationship with Jack is top notch.
Favourite headcanon:
I’ve never talked about this before but I have this deep rooted lore idea that Thornton had a lung transplant as a child. There’s even more lore behind why but I won’t bore you with that, but anyways I have this hc that while on a mission with Jack when they’re first working together, he finds her immunosuppressants in her backpack, and because she hasn’t declared them to anyone on the team, except Oversight ofc, as nobody knows about her lungs, Jack’s first thought is “…she’s dealing drugs.” And confronts her about it, and she’s just like “😒”.
After that, only Jack knows about it, and I like to think that while she’s in prison, he goes to see her and even though he’s mad because he thinks she’s a traitor, he’s still like “they’re giving you your pills for your lungs right?”
Warren Worthington III:

First impression:
I don’t really remember my first impression of Warren. I remember in TLS, when we see him trying to cut out his wings, my first thought was “WOAH IM UNCOMFY”, but overall I think for me he was just sort of…there?
Impression now:
I like him a lot more in TLS than I do in Apocalypse, in Apocalypse I find him a bit obnoxious, but I like the complexities of his situation in TLS, as much as I don’t like the movie itself. I think it’s really interesting to see his development throughout that movie considering he has such little screen time.
Favourite moment:
I do actually quite like the scene where he flies away from his father before he’s forced to have the mutation cure. Very powerful and I think the actor did a nice job.
Idea for a story:
I don’t have one off the top of my head but I like the idea of something to do with he and Alex talking, for my universe they both have somewhat ‘unsupportive’ parents, so that could be an interesting exploration.
Unpopular opinion:
I can’t say I have one because I don’t know the character well enough. Maybe that he kind of annoyed me in Apocalypse? Like I get why he was the way he was, I just didn’t feel emotionally connected to him. I wish they could’ve fleshed it out a little bit more.
Favourite relationship:
I have no idea.
Favourite headcanon:
Again, not really any idea cause I don’t know enough about him, but I’d love to hear a few of yours sometime.

MASTER LIST: One Fic for Each Fandom [A-I]
i've been working on this for months now, y'all, i'm so tired. Dx
many, soooo many years ago, i came up with the idea of recommending one fic, not necessarily the best or biggest or most popular fic, but definitely my ultimate favorite fic for every fandom i was in at the time or had been in at some point up to then. there are some fics i love so much that i go back to them periodically, maybe every couple of years, even if i'm not active in that fandom anymore. so i thought having a list of them somewhere i could easily find them was a pretty good idea.
narrator: she forgot where to "easily" find the list.
but i still liked the idea a lot, and i told myself when i found the list again, i would update it with fics for all the fandoms i've joined/read for since then. well, a couple of days as of the first drafting of this post, i finally found my original list on my old livejournal (christ, i'm old) and decided i would start on that update, but to post on my tumblr blog instead.
so here it is. they're not all romance, though most of these will include one or more of my favorite ships for their respective fandom (which you can find at my ships archive), even if it's just in the background. some of the fics are the same as i had in my original list, but some of them are not, simply because i've found fics i love even more since then. needless to say, most of those that were 'ported from my original list are quite old or written before canon was finished (the list is from 2006… please refrain from commenting if you weren't born back then, lol. i'm acutely aware that my early fandom life is basically ancient history to most of you). even some from more recent fandoms might be pretty old or non-canon-compliant, simply because i've been collecting fandoms since time immemorial. some might contain elements that would be considered problematic in this day and age. some might be unfinished. they're all special to me in some way.
some fandoms seem to have slipped through the cracks in the transition between FFN (where favorites and alerts are very organized but i always forgot to use them, and there's no read history) and AO3 (where subscriptions and history are unreliable and impossible to search through, and there's no way to see which fics you've left kudos on)-- srsly, how hard is it to just save everything in this age of big data? smdh. some of the links might not work, as you might imagine-- it'll take me some time to find new links, or to figure out if the fic is still even on the internet. if you've heard of these fics and know where they can be currently found, please let me know! because of that reason, i haven't listed ratings for every single one, though i've tried to add that in where i can find it. still, i hope this is helpful for someone, and i'm going to keep it pinned on my blog so i NEVER, EVER forget where it is again (and can regularly update it as i am sucked into more fandoms).
back in the day, i had hoped this format could catch on as a meme type of thing, so that other people could take it as a template and make their own fandom recs lists. so i'd love to see yours! be sure to tag me if you decide to do this. :)

an AU of the avatar series with events inspired by the movie troy and their versions of the illiad. there will be differences, in both characters and events, with emphasis on key characters, battles, war, strategy and hopefully some the nuance within.

rukia was sitting in his room the first time he opened his eyes after. he does not know if this was a dream, or reality—remembers only that she looked very pale, and that there was a small, black hell butterfly perched on her finger. in this vision, she looked startlingly similar to the girl who used to crouch on his windowsill before school, shiny black shoes and black hair. he watched her for as long as his eyes could stay open, waiting for her to notice him and tell him what was happening. the battle hadn't felt like the deciding, dramatic finale he'd been subconsciously expecting, and he keeps waiting for the other shoe to drop.

-
THE DRAGON PRINCE
a delicate arrangement by jelly / @jelzorz (M).
it’s not that it’s a bad idea. in all honesty, ezran thinks it’s a well thought-out, completely reasonable, perfectly sound idea that could solve a lot of his own problems, callum’s problems, and katolis’ problems, in one fell swoop - if it works, that is. it’s a little risky, he’ll admit, but it’s not the same as, say, running away from home at ten years old with his brother and a moonshadow elf assassin (whose mission was to kill him, mind) to return a dragon egg in the midst of a centuries-long war, and hey, they’d managed that all right. compared to that mess, politics should be easy, right?
right?

ficwriter asks: 12, 8, 10, 13
12. A trope you're really into right now. I'm not totally sure if this counts as a trope or a genre, but I'm a ride-or-die enemies-to-lovers (specifically, public enemies/secret lovers) girlie. Slow burn as well (don't get me started on how much I love slow burns, I beg of you). There's so much to play with, especially if the character is really fun and charismatic like Heisenberg (RE8) or Nick (Left 4 Dead 2).
8. If you had to write a sequel for a fic, you'd write one for... Witchtersberg (Wintersberg witch AU), all the way! While it isn't necessarily a series that will have sequels, I have so many ideas planned for entries into it bouncing around in my little rotting brain. I miss soft, lovesick Heisenberg so, indescribably much!
10. What is the longest amount of time you've let a draft rest before you finished it? I'm soooo bad about leaving drafts alone (and inevitably forgetting about them) that it isn't even funny. Death Walks With You (Valenvaef) had a chapter sitting for close to 4 months before I posted it. Currently though, I'm working on rewriting Welded Together (Wintersberg) and I've had those chapter rewrites sitting and collecting dust since March. Only one is complete.
13. A fandom you're thinking about writing for. I will likely be writing Resident Evil stuff for a loooong while, but I'd love to dive back into the Left 4 Dead community again! I miss my Nellis mutuals! If we're talking totally new though, I've been thinking about The Walking Dead games again lately. Okay, one person in particular (*cough*Javi*cough*) but the answer still stands.
Thank you so much for the fic writer ask! This was fun to do! :)

Hey! I am really enjoying your fic "Perfect Slaughter". You are such a great writer and I am always excited when a new chapter comes out :D
Do you have any other ideas for fics in the bg3 fandom cooking? Or hell, maybe even for other fandoms? I feel like there is so much potential ( especially with the flexibility of Tav-ships).
I feel like just for Astarion there are soooo many things I want to explore ( though I am terrible at actually bringing stuff to paper so I depend on cool writers like yourself)
Also, kind of semi-related, but in another ask you mentioned that you thought you were over vampires so I am wondering: did you ever play vampire the masquerade: bloodlines by any chance? That seems to be THE vampire game, or so the internet has me believe :P
~Regarding my fic Perfect Slaughter (Astarion x Tav, Astarion backstory-centric)~
Thank you so much anon!!
To be honest, my writer's mind is a bit consumed right now with the Perfect Slaughter tadpole, so otherwise I'm still just browsing recipes rather than cooking anything on the backburner yet 😂 I probably will write a couple self-indulgent Tyrus/Astarion one-shots based on my current playthrough, once I finish it, but we'll see if I end up posting them.
Once I finish the first draft of PS, though, this answer may change! I'm really enjoying the nontoxic vibes of the bg3 fandom thus far, so I'd love to set up shop here for a while 🥰
In regards to VTMB, I have not ventured into that bloody world yet. I am mostly a D&D 5E girlie at the moment, though I'm a lot more interested now in doing a Curse of Strahd campaign one day and trying out VTMB....fingers crossed!

Just wanted to say I definitely don't see a problem with reblogging active blogs here. I'm only very slightly active nowadays but feel free to reblog anything from me! You never know when stuff will disappear! Dorna killed so many amazing blogs from the golden era of MotoGP tumblr almost overnight with copyright takedowns. repsol-ariel especially had soooo much incredible content, not just gifs but great informative posts and well-written opinion stuff too. A lot of good ones were lost but hers was especially tragic, it was just a gold mine of content. It's so insane that Dorna felt the need to attack and punish fans giving them enthusiastic free publicity. Hopefully now that Liberty is involved things will be more reasonable. But still, I'm happy to see what you're doing because I've definitely seen how fast stuff can disappear, so you should absolutely reblog anything you don't want to lose! MotoGP tumblr used to be really active and fun back in 2016 when I got into MotoGP and for a few years after that but it almost disappeared for a while after Dorna started attacking fans. I still lurk around occasionally and still follow MotoGP so I'm really glad to see the MotoGP fandom getting bigger on here again and very happy to see my old stuff getting reblogged and appreciated lately!
Hi!!!
Omg thanks so much for your input, i appreciate it! Your stuff is so so amazing (I would expect nothing less from a pens fan 😌).
I didn't realise how big motogp tumblr was back in the Golden Age as you called it until I saw posts from people back in like 2014 being like,'Thanks for 2k followers!' and they exclusively posted motogp stuff. Like, what do you mean there were way more than 2 thousand in 2014 😭 and I'm sure there were even more when you got on the scene in 2016
And yeah, I get what you mean about dorna making blogs disappear overnight. Still happening now 🥲 AND even some of the videos I had in my drafts from like 2014 are now unavailable??? They're on a rampage, I swear.
It's ridiculous, really. As you said, they get so much enthusiastic free publicity. Literally an army of media team interns that actually understand what the fans want to see 😭 If liberty does one thing right, I hope it's stopping the war on creators (appriciate you guys, keep up the good work 🫶)
And about the content, omg, yes, I have so many good opinion pieces and stuff from repsol-ariel and other people in my drafts (i just don't know how to tag them 🧍♂️). They're sooo informative. So sad that they didn't get as many notes as the gifs, tho. So I know there's going to be a million I'll never find. (Especially since all the people that reblogged stuff ALSO deactivated 🔫).
And yes your stuff is VERY appreciated!!! ✨️✨️ Now that I have your blessing, I will be unleashing the deluge that is all the stuff I wanted to reblog but was too shy to do so bc you were active, lol.
(Also obsessed with the crossover between f1, hockey, motogp, and good omens on your blog, I think we might actually be the same person)
Thanks again!!! I hope you have a super great week! 🌟💫
#asks from my mutuals ✨✨#also you guys are probs like ahh you've been reblogging from acrive accounts this whole time???#well actually 99% of those accounts were either abandoned or I'm mutuals with them#and I knew it was chill#and the 1% was me forgetting to check lol

2, 3, 8, and 19 for the fandom game, for any fandom(s) you feel like talking about :)
(for 3, fic and/or meta posts, can't actually remember if you've posted straight up fic before haha)
2. My favorite fic from the fandom that I’ve read
I haven't read a ton of fic sadly (although I haven't read a lot in general the last few years due to college making me read So Many academic papers and books that I got burnt out and haven't quite recovered my love of reading. Yet). Although, my friend @lookerdewitt has written literally some of the best fic I have ever read, so I would probably say one of their fics.
3. My favorite fic from the fandom that I’ve written myself
I have actually sort of written fanfic (both legit fanfic, and also a few "thinly veiled technically fanfic if you changed the names" for a fiction writing class that I had to write several stories for and wanted to see if I could get away with it), but I haven't actually. Shared those fics with anyone? Partly bc I have historically almost never finished any fiction writing project that I have started, ever, and partly bc I'm just shy about sharing my writing in general.
I have been working on a LoZ fancomic idea for the past uhhhh four or five years (technically last decade since I first came up with the idea in late high school and then had it sit in the back of my head for several years bc all I had was a setting and a handful of characters), and I have never in my life stuck with a project this long, so I guess that would be my favorite from my personal works bc it's apparently something I care about enough to not abandon entirely. I've actually made a decent amount of progress on my "detailed outline" recently, so here's hoping I can stick it out and actually get to the script and then to drawing pages one day.
For meta posts I think my favorite is actually my analysis of the Octopath 1 cast and how the major antagonists in each of their stories acts as a mirror and foil to each character. I really enjoy analyzing stories in general, but I so rarely write it out, so I was happy to actually do so for once. Gave me a lot of confidence for all the other meta and headcanon posts that I wrote afterwards.
There's also a Legend of Dragoon meta post sitting partly-finished in my drafts where I analyze themes surrounding each dragoon spirit and its wielders, which I haven't finished bc I only remember to work on it when I'm doing my yearly replay of LoD, and also bc it started looking like it might need to be a series of posts due to uh....length. Like I make a lot of lengthy posts, but each dragoon spirit's analysis was about a short essay's worth of words, and there are eight spirits soooo....hopefully I'll finish that one day, bc it's an analysis I've spent years thinking about.
8. Is there anything I wish people would write more about in fics? (A dynamic, an exploration of an arc, just a character that doesn’t get much screentime, etc)
I'm always a sucker for post-canon healing/recovery/rebuilding arcs. Can't get enough of them honestly (when I have the motivation to read). There's something so fascinating about looking at a character who Went Through Some Stuff, but the main narrative didn't look at the effects of that, and so a dedicated writer took up the challenge of trying to explore what comes after.
Most of my favorite characters are weird side characters who don't get a lot of love from the writers of canon or fans, so I'm always glad to see stuff for them as well.
19. Favorite headcanon
Oh hmmm, there's a lot and it depends on which media we're talking about, so if you're curious about a specific game let me know. Off the top of my head though hmm...
Okay I have this headcanon that Milo TriStrat snorts when she laughs genuinely. Like sure she's got the ladylike proper, cute laugh that's part of her spy job and totally fake, but when she is being fully honest and laughing for real, she snorts.
#space-spring#ask game#I still don't have an ask tag#the fact that I got an idea in high school wrote a short blurb that I didn't feel was going anywhere and shelved said idea for uh#close to a decade before I suddenly all at once had a plot to go with the setting and characters like#never throw out your old stuff I guess you never know when it'll come back to you

Soooo I was looking through my drafts because there's posts in there years old, and I found this old fanfiction question list that my dear friend @thuriweaver tagged me in two years ago and I thought what the heck, I'll fill that out tonight because I've been trying to work on writing more lately. So, without further ado...
1.How many works do you have on AO3?
95!
Though I've written more, there are things on @ironwhumper359 and @ironwoman359-writes that aren't fandom related and are only on tumblr, and there's probably some other things on my masterlist that aren't on AO3 either, maybe I ought to comb through it at some point and upload more!
2. What is your total AO3 word count?
333,493! And fun fact, I just counted that up manually from all 95 fics because I thought AO3 didn't display that stat, but it turns out I just wasn't logged in. The stat page says I actually has 335,438 words, so either I missed a fic or it includes the author's notes or summaries in that count.
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
If you look at the fandom list it has 10, but I think 5 is a more accurate count, which I'll explain in a sec. These are the fandoms on AO3:
Sanders Sides (Web Series) (87)
Super Mario & Related Fandoms (3)
Marvel Cinematic Universe (3)
Undertale (Video Game) (3)
Leverage (2)
Video Blogging RPF (2)
Who Killed Markiplier? (Web Series) (1)
In Space With Markiplier (Web Series) (1)
Six of Crows Series - Leigh Bardugo (1)
Markiplier TV (Web Series) (1)
The thing is, the two fics in the "video blogging" fandom are markiplier ego fics and I'd lump those, Who Killed Markiplier, In Space With Markiplier, and Markiplier TV all as one fandom, and also, all the Super Mario fics and MCU fics are actually both Sanders Sides AUs, so those aren't really separate fandoms either.
A better list would be:
Sanders Sides
Markiplier
Undertale
Leverage
Six of Crows
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
So this was fascinating to look at! I'm going to list them in reverse order, for the Drama.
5: How to Catch a Fairy, posted on June 16th, 2020 with 2,918 hits and 515 kudos. This is a very short little oneshot, filling a prompt from a Bad Things Happen Bingo card, "Used as Bait." I really enjoyed writing this one, but I'm surprised it's beat out so many of my other, older fics. It has almost 100 more kudos than Our Own Villain, the (admittedly incomplete) fic that is my 6th biggest in kudos and kind of put me on the map in the TSS fandom. I guess people really like fae, feral protective love interests, and analogical.
4: Phase One, originally posted on September 11th, 2020, with 3,575 hits and 532 kudos. Now this is far less surprising, the Marvel AU is one of my most popular stories, with an entire sideblog dedicated to developing it, and it is by far the story I am most asked about continuing. The story is told partly through in universe S.H.I.E.L.D. documents and internal communications, questions on @ask-agent-sanders, and traditionally posted stories. Phase One is the AO3 name for the traditional story portion of the universe, each chapter being an entry in the story. The plan was, eventually, to create a fic called Phase Two for stories taking place post-Avengers (2012) content, but I haven't updated the fic in nearly 2 years.
3: A Part of the FamILY, originally posted on May 9th, 2018, with 5,326 hits and 696 kudos. According to the author's notes, I originally wrote the fic in February of 2018 to celebrate 1,000 tumblr followers, so it makes sense that it would have a lot of kudos. It also leans HEAVILY on a lot of tropes that the TSS fandom was really into at the time, and even has song lyrics in it with links to said songs on spotify. I stand by the quality of the actual story and writing on display here, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that those aspects make me cringe just a bit today 😅
2: A Fiendly Reunion, originally posted on July 7th, 2019, with 7,621 hits and 766 kudos. This story is one of my proudest achievements, both in the TSS fandom and as a writer in general. At 30,000+ words over 10 chapters, it is the longest single fic I've ever posted, and the only multichapter fic over 4 chapters that I've ever completed, outside a Big Bang challenge I did in 2018. It took over a year to write, and was a huge passion project for me. I'm really, really happy that it's at the number two spot, and that my readers loved it as much as I did. I'd honestly be surprised that it wasn't at the number one spot, if it weren't for what IS at the number one spot...
1: Broken Wings, originally posted on September 9th, 2018 with 7,747 hits and 1,159 kudos. This fic is the most popular thing I've ever posted on AO3, and it's tumblr cross-post has over 1,000 notes, which is a lot for a fanfiction on this site. Why? It's short, at just under two thousand words, it's angsty and it's fluffy, it has protective-and-self-sacrificing Virgil, protective light sides, vague and abusive dark sides (this was 2018, ok, the fandom was a very different place then), it has wings, and to top it all off it was actually based on fanart, this amazing workby @asofterfan who came up with all the wing designs and potential dynamics that the winged sides would have, I just took their vision and translated it to words. I kind of love that my most popular work is actually something that's collaborative in nature, I think it says something about the way fandom comes together as a community <3.
5. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
I do! I used to not as often because I felt awkward, and I'm not gonna lie, I still do sometimes, but these days I try to respond when possible, because I really, really appreciate comments! They're absolutely everything as a creative.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I'm not really into angsty endings, very rarely do I leave something unhappy on purpose. Sometimes I start out with something unhappy, only to later go and add more fic to give it a happier ending. I'm Left in the Dark originally was a short prompt fill, chapter 1, but then I went back and wrote chapters 2 and 3 to resolve the plot.
All that to say, I think the angstiest ending out there is actually the ending of an instant of great white gravity, which is the first installment in a series I hope to write more for that I'm calling Before and After, though I haven't made it a series on AO3 yet. By it's very nature of being a prequel to the events of Who Killed Markiplier, the whole thing has big 'doomed by the narrative' energy, and even though not every fic will necessarily have a melancholy tone, great white gravity does, because it's about Will being too late to ask Celine out and having to live with watching her marry Mark instead, and about Damien watching the friend group he used to be able to count on be irrecoverably changed by this tension. Goooood angst, right there!
7. Do you ever write crossovers?
I do! Or, I've written one, at least. The Marvel AU isn't a recasting like most of my other AUs based on existing stories, the Marvel characters also exist and are in the story.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
I don't believe so, no! I've been very fortunate in that regard, the little hate I have received over the years has all been in my askbox directly, never in the comments of a fic that I can recall.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Nope! Sex-repulsed asexual over here, but y'all have fun in your corner of the internet!
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
To my knowledge/recollection, no, but I do know that someone reposted one of my fics on Wattpad once. They credited me as the author though, so I didn't ask them to take it down, but in general, I don't like it when people do that.
11. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes! Until the Sun Rises, a walking dead style zombie AU, is a collab with @buzz-by-bee, aka @a-valourous-choice, author of the To Build a Home series! We haven't updated it in a long time (oops) but it has a sideblog over on @until-the-sun-rises that has some pretty sweet fanart as well as all the content if you're interested!
You Don't Own Me (You Don't Even Know Me) also started out as a collab with @5-falsehoods-phonated, aka RoseyWinter on AO3, but he has since left the project and left me to finish our plan on my own (which I keep saying that I'll do and then not doing, whoops).
Also, I swear I've written a fic with @theinvisiblespoon, but maybe I'm just thinking of the hours we used to spend rp-ing and all the times we've talked about writing a more structured story together and then just never doing it (have you spotted the theme yet?)
12. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
Oh gosh, that's so hard. Even back when I only wrote for One fandom I was a multishipper, and now I'm shipping in other fandoms? Too many good choices, how dare you make me choose. If I have to limit it to 5 all time favorites though... Analogical, Moxiety, LAMP, Kanej, and the Leverage OT3.
13. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Undertale! if you go waaay back on my AO3...or, you know, just click on the Undertale fandom link there, you can see the few works that I put out: a series of prompts for Cheer Up the Skeleton Week, an event focusing on depicting Sans as Happy for once, an OC self insert story that I quickly abandoned after a few chapters, and Your Fault, a piece about the multiverse breaking down that I'm still actually pretty proud of, all things considered.
14. What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
Oof, that may be the hardest yet. A Fiendly Reunion, because I actually finished it? A Sanders Carol, because it was my first ever Big Bang, and my first ever completed multi-chapter fic? The Secret History of the Invincible II, because it's new and exciting? They're Only Children because I have so many ideas for it? I honestly couldn't tell you. I love all of them, they're all very dear to me.
15. BONUS QUESTION: Do you have a WIP that haunts you?
Dude, all of them. If I've filtered things correctly on AO3, then of the 24 works in progress that I've started, only 9 are actually complete. That's 15 unfinished stories floating around in my mind, and I know it's actually at least 17, because there are two that show up as completed because I'm doing multiple single works in a series instead of chapters in a single work, so they look complete right now but I know that they're not, plus there's a few that never have been posted to begin with. SO many unfinished stories.
But the one that haunts me the most has to be Our Own Villain, because it is quite possibly my oldest wip, over 5 years old at this point, and it's still not finished but I want it to be so badly. Other wips I've kind of made peace with potentially not continuing, but I swear to god, OOV has to finish before I die, even if Sanders Sides as a show has changed so much since January of 2018 when I first had the idea that the whole premise is now fundamentally flawed, I just have to finish. It's my fanfiction white whale.
---
This was fun! If you've never read any of my work before (tho let's be real, if you made it this far you probably have), I do have a masterlist pinned right at the top of this blog that you can check out. Most of this post was sanders sides because it's what I've written the most of, but I'm actually focusing more on some in space with markiplier and six of crows stuff fic wise, as well as my own original writing. Thanks for reading, I'm not going to tag anyone specific since this challenge is so old. Any writer who sees this and wants to do it, go for it!

AO3 Fic Tag Game
tagged by @persephoneed. I'm soooo late to the party but thank you for tagging!!
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 6.
2. Whats your AO3 word count? 23,442
3. What fandoms do you write for? Currently, I only write for Wednesday (2022), but I have written a single fic for Supernatural (2005) before.
4. What are your Top 5 Fics by Kudos?
wake up screaming from dreaming
paper rings
Quads and Countermoves
sleep well, my love
let your tears fall
5. Do you repond to comments? Yes! After I post something new, I tend to get overwhelmed and take a day (or two or three..) to respond, but I DO respond to comments! I always think it's very sweet that folks take time out of their days to read and then COMMENT on my things, so I try to comment back most of the time to express my gratitude.
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Definitely you can't be gone. I had an idea to get in the mind of Tyler Galpin while he was in the woods after he'd been told that Wednesday was dead, and the whole thing is rather sad and angsty. However, I did have fun writing it as it was how I thought his mind had been working since I watched the show in December 2022, and even though it's the least read fic of mine so far, I'm quite proud of it and happy with how it turned out.
7. Whats the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Hmmmm, I'm a genuine sucker for fluffy fics so all the rest of mine have happy endings haha. But I suppose "paper rings" would have the happiest ending out of the lot.
8. Do you get hate on fics? No, thankfully. I've never gotten a nasty comment on a fic yet and I hope that streak continues.
9. Do you write smut? I had never written smut, HOWEVER I have my first (and perhaps only, who knows LOL) smut fic half-written in my drafts right now... 😳
10. Do you write cross-overs? No, and I probably won't? But who knows.
11. Have you ever had a fic translated? I have not, but it would be an HONOR if ever someone would ask to translate one of them.
12. Have you ever cowritten a fic before? I haven't, but I'd be open to it!
13. What is a WIP you would like to finish but doubt you ever will? I am hopeful that both of the WIPs I have right now will get done, and I do have every intent to get the both of them done and published. HOWEVER, just because I am shy and nervous about it, I do doubt that I'll ever actually finish + publish the smut fic.
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship? W(e)yler, no ship has ever given me brainrot like they have and I'm not sure any ship ever will.
15. What are you writing strengths? DIALOGUE, God I love writing dialogue so much. Part of me thinks I should just write scripts.
16. What are your writing weaknesses? Having to DESCRIBE things drives me batty, I'll sit and parse over how to describe a room or a facial expression for entirely too long.
17. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I have never done it, and I'd be SOOOO nervous about doing it in anything other than German, which is the language outside of English I'm most comfortable with writing/reading/comprehending. I'm not opposed to it if the need arose?? But outside of the stray pet names in different languages that may arise in Wednesday and Tyler dialogue, I'd probably want to consult with someone who's fluent if ever I was trying to write something substantial in a different language.
18. First fandom you wrote for? Supernatural. I still need to collect my fic from fanfiction.net and post it on my AO3 account.
19. Favourite fic you’ve ever written? Oh, this is hard. Ummmm, if I had to pick, I think my most favorite (as of now!! I've got so many ideas that this could change) is "wake up screaming from dreaming." It was the first Wednesday fic I wrote, and it was also the first time I'd attempted to write any fanfic since like 2015, and I genuinely adore the story. Not to sound self-absorbed, but I'll literally reread pieces of it if I'm feeling down because I think it's just so sweet and comforting and I'm very proud of it.
20. What fic would you want to rewrite one day? Mmmm, I don't know that I really want to rewrite any of the ones I've published so far. If I ever got comfortable with writing and publishing smut, I'd maybeeeee rewrite "Quads and Countermoves" to be spicier? Because it definitely COULD have gone spicier if I hadn't had a panic about taking it that way.
I do think this game ran its course on here ~10 days ago, so I'm not directly tagging anyone, but if you see this and haven't done this yet, pleaseeee consider yourself tagged!!

Good morning! 💞
Here a little peice advice as a Tolkien fan-
• Buy the paper back edition of The Hobbit, and read it.
• Buy the paper back edition of The Lord Of The Rings, read it. ( I am currently reading the first book). There's a whole book containing the series at one place, but it's somewhat expensive.
• Buy Child Of Hurin, read it.
• Buy Beren and Luthien, read it.
• Buy Fall Of Gondolin, read it.
• The Silmarallion ( the big history book ). Take as much time as you need.
• The Unfinished Tales Of Numenor. I recently bought the illustrated deluxe slipcase edition. Let's just say my dad, told me not to buy any more books for at least until my next birthday. But the maps and the illustrations are Worth It. I am on a book buying BAN!
• The History Of Middle-earth series. There are 10 books in this series.
• The Nature Of Middle-earth. I want to buy this, the cover is mesmerizing. The beautiful purple colour. 💜
If this feels overwhelming, take a deep breath.
Remember, you are a Tolkien fan, even if you have not read everything or if you have simply watched the movies.
This is my personal reading order. Most people will recommend you to read The Silmarallion after you finish reading the Lord of the Rings, but i think that can be a bit overwhelming.
Another thing, you don't need to have multiple copies of the same book, if you don't want to. Especially those deluxe slipcase editions. For me collecting is useless if i don't read it.
I hope reading this was helpful. Please note this is my personal reading order. Take as many breaks as you need to.⚘💙
Good day, my loves! 🥰
Thanks for all the help navigating the Middle-Earth universe! I was feeling a little overwhelmed first jumping into the fandom because I was like "What order does all of this GO IN??!" But I figured that out and was able to watch the movies first.
But navigating the book will be a lot easier now! I'm glad I have some expert advice! I just ordered The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, so that'll come in on (hopefully) Friday and I can get started. I'm soooo excited to start something new since I read all the Harry Potter books!
I kind of wish I had these good books with me now though. It's my day off of work but I'm stuck putting up with stupid cramps. It feels good writing outside in the shade with some yummy mint ice cream, but where't my heating pad and a good book?
Secondly, I found that child-Legolas x child-mc fic I was telling you guys about last week! It turns out it wasn't a finished draft, so I'm working on the ending, then I'll edit and post it. So it should be up soon!
As for this… You guys can always feel free to send me suggestions beyond this exciting reading list I was provided! But you gave me the wonderful idea of making an actual reading list like I have my watch list for movies, shows, and anime. I figured if I started making a list of things that peak my interest then I'll never get bored! Especially if I don't feel like reading something now, I'm probably going to get into a reading mood sooner or later.
So, this is what I've got so far:
Lookin' good, if I do say so myself!
LET'S GO, MIDDLE-EARTHERS!

10 + 25? and 29 if you feel like it
10. what is the longest amount of time you’ve let a draft rest before you finished it?
Literal years. I think my first fic in this fandom was technically a WIP for something like 2 years before I posted it because I wasn't sure if I wanted to dip my toe in. If I look back at previous fandoms, there are probably some that I let sit for even longer than that.
25. besides writing, what are your other hobbies?
Soooo many, which doesn't help me find enough time to write. Running, cooking/baking (soooo much of this), watching many sports, reading, quilting, cross stitch, oil painting, newly playing piano again, traveling when I can, and probably some others I'm forgetting at the moment. My job also takes up a ton of time :/
29. how easy is it for you to come up with titles?
It is either the easiest or hardest thing in the world, depending on the fic. Sometimes I have one in mind from early on, especially if it's a relevant song lyric [(We're Gonna) Find Something Better, mon amour rime avec toujours, toujours, If at First You Don't Succeed]. Sometimes I'm struggling up until the minute I post and/or just using something simple [Salt in Our Blood, Swap, The Wolf and the Apprentice].

(i very tragically lost the first draft of this to the void by misclicking and i cried for around 10 minutes. it was like 5,000 words in. hopefully I can bring back the same energy from the first one.)
I AM SOOOO PISSED ABOUT THIS POST I CAN'T EVEN DESCRIBE IT.
To preface this, hello! My name is Chiffon or Neil, and I am a writer, currently working on writing a YA fiction novel. I have been writing for many years, and have taken a multitude of classes both in and out of school. Once I am a legal adult, I plan on publishing a poetry compilation and hopefully multiple fiction books in the future. This is technically an opinion piece, but I will be delving deep into why you cannot try to ignore this issue by just saying "thats just ur opinion let ppl believe what they wanna believe". If you want a similar opinion piece, check out YouTuber/animator Noodle's popular video on AI-generated in-between frames on already finished animation.
ALSO PLEASE DON’T HARASS THE OP IF THIS GETS NOTES
Now, time for the "opinion piece". In this essay, when I am talking about fanfiction, I am more specifically talking about fics that are not breaking the boundaries of who it is being written about, and is 10,000 words or more. However, all writing (excluding certain circumstances) is art in my opinion.
I am very frustrated by people constantly trying to state that "fanfictions are not real books," because... it's not that simple.
Fanfiction is a type of writing, and therefore, even if it’s unpublished or even not directly called a "book", and instead a "long-form writing" or a similar title, it falls directly in the same category.
Fanfiction typically can have hundreds of thousands, even millions of words, so that is the first box it checks; many professional, published novels can have 50,000 words or less.
Another box it checks is: if the fanfiction could be easily published professionally by just changing the characters' names and maybe their personalities a bit (see; 50 Shades of Gray), it should most definitely fall under the category of 'book'.
Before you say "well, most fanfiction is romance and smut so that makes it not a type of book," one, that is demeaning the art of writing, and two... Have you never heard of published romance novels? Have you not seen BookTok (I cannot believe I'm mentioning them) ranting and raving over books like Icebreaker? Currently, Icebreaker, written by Hannah Grace, which has multiple circumstances of sexual scenes and intimacy between the characters, has sold over a million copies. It's frequently seen in bookstores nation-wide and has thousands of five-star reviews. So, that disproves another argument.
Another issue with this opinion is, often, fanfiction is much more influential than published books (although more on the emotional and individual side of things due to less publicity than professionally-published books).
Also, the OP is not the sole decider of what is and what is not designated as an 'important' form of writing. And, from what I can tell, she has no obvious experience as a fiction writer from first glance. Admittedly, she could be an experienced writer, and if she is, I apologise for the assumption, but from my perspective, she seems to only read writings, not write them. I am writing this piece as though she is only a reader.
This is an issue because, yes, this opinion of "fanfiction isn't book" is just an opinion... But it's a harmful one, because it very clearly implies "fanfiction isn't real writing"... which is the most dreadful concept I have personally ever heard related to writing as an art form.
The OP, alongside many other Tumblr users (including me in the past) are or was a part of the DSMP fanbase (don't scroll I'm going somewhere with this). The fandom was especially popular during the years of 2020 - early 2022. A primary part of its fanbase was made up of fanfiction writers; great ones at that.
While there are thousands of well-written fanfics involving characters from the popular Minecraft server, for this specific situation, I will focus on one of the most well-known ones (no it's not heatwaves).
Passerine, by AO3 user blujamas.
Passerine is a seven-chapter fanfic that has exactly 76,373 words (for context, The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway has 67,707 words). It was extremely popular in the fandom for its gorgeous writing, its complex plot, and most importantly; the way it impacted readers.
While those who were a fan of the DSMP were heavily affected by it, anyone, no matter if they had or had not heard of the media it was based off of, could feel very strongly about the characters and the trials and triumphs (though triumphs may be few and far between) they go through.
The fic guided readers through a simple, yet content life between a family of royals in a happy kingdom in the distant past. It showed the children and the adults both as they grew up, though bringing a slight taste of grief to the readers, almost in preparation for what was to come.
As both parents would leave, though one was out of her control, it left the children to fend for themselves.
They stuck together, despite everything.
But as you read through the story, it consistently brings you hope, a chance for happiness, before stabbing it to death directly in front of you, leaving you almost numb with the pain you feel for these fictional protagonists.
Due to the beautiful, clever writing and the way it brought severe emotions to the reader with every word, it gained serious traction in the fandom, and it currently stands with 3,248,752 views (known as 'hits' on AO3) and 88,251 likes (known as 'kudos' on AO3).
Now, as you think about the popularity, impact, and talent within the fanfic itself; do you still think it does not count as "real" fiction? If Passerine could potentially be published just by changing characters around a bit- would you think the same?
Now, imagine a Shakespearian work; let's say... Romeo and Juliet, for example. If that never existed as a published work, and was instead a fanfic on AO3 that was exactly the same, save for it being written with modern language and terms.
Would it still count as the masterpiece the world sees it as now? Or would it be cast aside as a "wannabe-book" that only fake readers take a glance at? (also, fake readers aren't real??)
To put fanfiction, a popular outlet for writers to put their heart and soul into, into a box that reads on the outside "NOT REAL" and "NOT VALID"... well, that sounds more negative than positive, to say the least.
I believe that only those who have tried writing a fanfic or book before can give a genuine, serious opinion on this, because from the looks of it... some readers don't realise how much effort goes into the pages and the fics they read everyday.
Fanfictions are books. Trying to say otherwise is undermining and demeaning the time and effort put into those works.
