“Come on baby, get dressed. There’s a carnival I wanna take you to, it’ll be perfect.” Your boyfriend’s voice bellows through the apartment and you look at him from your position on the couch. You raise an eyebrow and slowly sit up, “but I thought we were going to stay in today, at least that’s what you said yesterday. You wanted to watch ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street movie marathon today.” You weren’t opposed to going out, you just hated when plans changed at the last minute and that he did know about you. He knew how it made you anxious and frustrated because you would have to change every other plan you had for the day. Well, he should have known that about you.

You watch as his jaw tenses for a moment before he sits down beside you, taking one of your hands in his. “I know, sweetheart. But I wanna celebrate the holiday season with you. We can enjoy the cool air, see everyone getting scared by the scare actors and just have fun. Let's do it.” You look into his eyes and feel a chill run down your spine before you look away and nod. “Okay, just give me some time to shower and get dressed.” You smile and stand, you only take a couple of steps before he grabs your wrist, his grip is a little too tight for your liking. “Gimme a kiss before you go.” His voice is gruff and he stands up, leaning in. You close the distance and peck his lips, just before you can turn away he wraps his arm around your waist and pulls you to him, smashing his lips against yours in a bruising kiss before he pulls back. “There, that’s what I call a kiss. Now go get ready.” You turn and jump when he playfully slaps your ass then continue to walk into the bathroom.

As the faucet turns on and water cascades along your skin you think back. You’re sure that Shanks is different, there’s something up with him and you remember the first day he did change. It was just a couple of months ago, his demeanor was colder and harsher than usual. He was a lot more impatient and when you looked into his eyes, you didn’t feel that comforting warmth emitting from them. You spoke to your friends about it and they just brushed it off, assuming that you were probably stressed from work and that made you overthink things. For a moment, you did agree with them, at the time of his change you had a lot of projects from work and your boss was riding you harder than a workhorse but then everything passed and Shanks was still different. You never brought it up to him though, not wanting to cause an argument but it lingers more and more in your head. You shake the thoughts as you turn the water off and wrap a towel around your body.

You glance at him as you leave the bathroom and furrow your eyebrows as he mumbles to himself, you can’t pick up anything he’s saying and you want to take a step closer to him to hear him but it's like he senses you even with his back to you. He turns and smiles at you, the sight of that grin on his face makes your skin crawl, “almost ready? I’m getting directions to the place now.” You fake a smile and nod, “Mhm, just need to get dressed. I’ll be out soon.” He nods and turns his back to you again and you let the smile drop from your face as you walk into your bedroom. You put on one of his sweatshirts and leggings then once you’re done you leave the room and walk over to him, “All done!”

He puts his phone away and nods as he stands, taking your hand in one of his. “Alright, let's go.” He walks out of the apartment with you and keeps you close to him as he walks with you to the car. “You look really sexy tonight, I can’t wait until we get back home. Maybe we can sneak a quickie in one of the bathrooms or the parking lot.” He winks at you and heat rises to your cheeks. “Shanks! You can’t just say something like that, what if someone hears?” You gently squeeze his hand and the voice in the back of your head is screaming at you, yes you and Shanks have been intimate before, it's expected for a couple that’s been together for almost 4 years but he never made a comment like that in public.

He laughs and opens the passenger side door for you, “can’t help it. You’re sexy and I’ll let anyone know how hard you make me.” He slaps your ass as you get in the car then goes to the driver’s side and starts driving. You lean in to put on the radio and smile when a song he dedicated to you starts playing, you smile and look over as he taps his fingers against the wheel. As you watch him some of your worries subside, maybe you have been overreacting. “Tell me more about this carnival.” You lower the volume of the music and he glances over at you as he takes one hand off the wheel to place it on your thigh. “I can’t spoil it too much but I do have to say that it’s going to be one hell of a night.” He chuckles and gently squeezes your thigh. You place your hand on top of his and trace along his knuckles, “that’s all? Come on, there has to be more than that!”

You watch as his jaw tenses again and his grip on your thigh tightens, making you whimper. He immediately releases his grip and looks at you, “I’m so sorry sweetheart, I just want this to be a surprise. I didn’t mean to do that, I’m so sorry.” He lifts his hand from your thigh and takes your hand, bringing it to his lips so he can press a kiss to your knuckles. “It’s okay, it was an accident. You know how I get when I try to plan a surprise for you.” You smile and look at him then turn your attention to the road, watching as fewer cars go past.

You’re not sure how much time passes and he finally pulls into the parking lot. Your eyebrows knit together as you look around, there isn’t a single car in sight but the carnival is as lively as ever. You hear music playing with too much bass and the voices sound too distorted for you to pick up what song is playing. You look over at Shanks and your eyes widen at the smile on his face, to call it creepy wouldn’t be enough. “Let’s go.” He turns the car off and gets out then opens your door, holding his hand out for you to take. You place your hand in his and take a deep breath. As you walk with him to what you believe is the entrance, you instinctively move closer to him. You look around some more, the parking lot looks completely abandoned. The lines that show where the parking spaces are, are cracked and barely visible, the wind blows a stronger gust that sends another chill down your spine, the only sense of life is the music and the lights that are coming from some of the stands and booths. You squint a little to check out the stands to see if there’s anyone there but you can’t make out a figure, your eyebrows knit together and you look at your boyfriend, his fiery red hair is tousled by the wind and he still has that damn smile on his face.

“Is this the right place? There’s no one here.” Your voice is barely above a whisper and you don’t understand why you’re whispering, it's not like there’s anyone around that could possibly hear you. “Of course it is! I wouldn’t have driven here if it wasn’t the right place.” His voice is loud and it makes you shrink into his side, he glances down at you and smiles. If it was supposed to provide some sort of comfort, it just does the complete opposite. “I told you it was a surprise, we’re just here earlier than everyone else. It’s not a bad thing.” He shrugs and continues to lead you to where the entrance is, you look at the ticket booth and you see dust and cobwebs covering the corners of the glass. It looks like no one has occupied the space in ages. Shanks releases your hand for a moment to dig out his wallet and slams down some money on the small countertop before grabbing your hand again.

For the one moment, your hand wasn’t in his, you thought about making a run for it. It was a brief thought but it quickly subsided. You walk with him and continue to look around, the rides look like they shouldn’t be in operation, without anything moving you could tell the tracks are old and weary. That’s when he stops, right in the center of it all. To your left is an old roller coaster with one loop, to your right is the classic bottle game, behind Shanks is a funnel cake stand and behind you is a haunted house. Your heartbeat quickens in your chest as you look at him, his face is barely illuminated by the lights that surround the place that constantly flicker.

“I have something to tell you and I think now is the best time to do so.” He lifts his other hand to grab your free hand, and now both of your hands are in his grip. Your heartbeat is going even faster now, making you feel like it’s either going to beat out of your chest or just stop. You wish you could read his mind to figure out what he’s going to say next. You swallow thickly and nod, “w-what is it?” You hate how your emotions ooze in your voice but you can’t dwell on it for too long. He leans in close to your ear and you can hear the smile grow on his face before he utters his next words.

“I’m not your boyfriend.”

Your eyebrows knit together and you pull back, taking in his expression and it’s mixed with something sinister and unreadable. “What are you talking about? Is this some weird way to propose? It’s not funny.” You try to pull your hands from his grip but he just tightens his hold on you. Then he laughs, it echoes through the barren wasteland of the carnival and rips straight through your chest. “Shanks! Stop it, you’re creeping me out!” Your voice finally breaks from the whisper as you cry out and his expression changes. His smile falls to a straight line and his eyes cut through your skull.

“Good. I’m glad you’re creeped out, you should’ve been creeped out a long time ago. I think it’s been four months now since I’ve gotten rid of him. Tell me, have you ever heard of the superstition surrounding doppelgängers?” He keeps your hands in his as he looks at you. You shake your head, “What are you talking about?” His jaw tenses and his eyes narrow, “that really gets on my nerves, don’t answer my fucking question with a question of your own.” His words pierce you like a snake’s fangs and their venom seeps into your veins.

“As I was saying, the belief is if you see someone that looks exactly like you then it’s bad luck. If you see them multiple times then it means that death is coming, either for you or the person that looks exactly like you. That’s what happened to your dear old boyfriend, we saw each other time and time again and I killed him.” He doesn’t give you a moment to process his words before continuing, “his last words were, ‘don’t lay a hand on my girlfriend’, how fucking pathetic. But what’s more pathetic is you didn’t notice a thing! You’ve been with him for what, 4 years now and you’ve known him for longer than that but you never noticed that I’m not him. How stupid can you be? You’re a really pathetic excuse for a girlfriend, the worst part is, he was about to propose. Got you a beautiful ring, I mean the rock on that is pretty huge. But no alarms went off? No warning flags? I mean, we’ve fucked plenty of times and nothing. Was that little gear in your head stuck or something? I killed your boyfriend and now I’m taking his place. Oh, now now, don’t cry. There’s no need for tears.” He coos mockingly as he releases one of your hands to wipe at your eye, you didn’t even realize tears were streaming down your face until he mentioned it.

You jerk away from his touch and his jaw tenses again, “Fine, that makeup was getting ruined one way or another. Where was I? I killed your boyfriend, you didn’t realize it, now we’re here and I bet you’re wondering why now? Why would I tell you my secret now? Why would I tell you here? And let me tell you, those are reasonable questions so I’ll answer them. But first, I have an idea for a little game and that game is, I’m gonna give you a ten-second head start to run anywhere here and find a way to escape. I’m going to leave the car keys right at the ticket stand. If you can escape me and grab the keys then you can drive off and do what you please, call the police, tell them everything. I’ll even tell you right now where I hid the body, there was an old house that we drove past on the way here. He’s in the backyard.” He chuckles as more tears stream down your face and continues, “But, if I catch you then I’m going to claim you wherever it is and we’re gonna act like we’re one happy couple. You’re gonna forget what I told you just now and if you play your cards right, I’ll pop that ring on your finger. Have a nice wedding and you’ll give me a few kids. Fair enough, right?”

You wipe your eyes and look at him, “do I even have a choice?” Your voice breaks as you ask the question and the response you get is more laughter, “Good girl! There’s the smart girl I knew was in there! You don’t have a choice, so I’m gonna let you go and give you those ten seconds. Run.” He releases your hand and you bolt off, he digs the keys from his pocket and walks over to the ticket stand as he starts to count. “One!” You run as fast as your legs can take you, you bolt past the haunted house and your head is on a constant swivel. “Two!” He yells out as he makes it to the stand and sets the car keys on top of the money he placed on the counter. You finally stop running and look around to see where you can hide, you see a run-down carousel to your left then ahead of you, you see a mirror maze. You weigh your options as you look at both places.

“Five! Half of your head start is gone! I hope you found a good place!”

His voice is barely audible due to your heartbeat pounding in your ears. You look at the carousel, there are some baskets that you could momentarily hide in but it would be way too risky. You look at the mirror maze and quickly decide that it’s your best option. You run inside as you hear him again. “Seven! Almost there!” How does he count so fast? Or did you spend too much time deciding where to go?

You run past distorted images of yourself in the mirrors, you have no clue where you’re going but you hope it’ll be enough to keep him away long enough for you to get back to the ticket booth. You look around as there’s a split, you go left hoping that you’ll be able to lose him but you instantly run into a dead end. “Fuck!” You curse and turn back to take the opposite direction. “And ten! I hope you found a good place!”

His voice echoes and your heart pounds even faster. You continue to run, going in whatever direction you believe is right. As you get deeper into the maze, you see that some mirrors are shattered, leaving trails of broken glass. You try to step over them as carefully as you can to not give him a sign as to where you are. You’re not even sure how much time has passed since you ran inside but all you can think about is finding an exit.

Then you stop in your tracks, “oh come on sweetheart, you’re becoming a little predictable. Or does that mean I’m becoming a good boyfriend?” He laughs and your heart sinks to your stomach. “I know you’re here, just come out and I’ll be easy on you. I promise.” You could hear the deceit in his voice, “okay, okay, I won’t fuck you that roughly.” You slowly move to find yourself at another split, this time you go right and you find yourself at another dead end. There’s broken glass on the floor and you step over it before crouching down into a corner. You clamp your hands over your mouth as you try to even out your breathing.

“I know I’m getting close, I can smell you from here.” He laughs and you clamp your hands over your mouth tighter to muffle the gasp that escapes. You wait until you don’t hear footsteps and you slowly stand and take a blind step forward. The crunch of glass beneath your shoe is loud enough for anyone inside the maze to hear. Your eyes widen as you look down and you quickly decide to make a run for it. But you stop in your tracks when you see him standing there, he’s smiling at you. He’s fucking smiling as he takes a step closer. “Gotcha! You run pretty fast and honestly, if that glass wasn’t there you probably would’ve gotten away. Who am I kidding? I know this place like the back of my hand, I would’ve gotten you one way or another.”

“Shanks…whoever you are. Please just let me go, I won’t tell anyone about this. I won’t say a thing I promise! Just don’t kill me.” You plead as tears brim your eyes, you’re frozen in place as he moves closer to you. His eyes are practically glowing when he stands in front of you and his large hands grip your shoulders and pull you to his chest. “Why would I kill you? I only killed your boyfriend because that’s just how the superstition goes. How could I let him go free when he has the perfect life? I wanted a taste of that and now I can have it.” He grabs your chin between his thumb and forefinger to make you look at him and he smiles, you know you're becoming delusional at this point because now you feel the warmth you’ve always felt with your boyfriend. It’s a feeling that you’ve been craving for a few months now and you finally have it again.

He moves his thumb to caress your bottom lip and looks into your eyes, “Now, we made a deal and I intend to claim my prize. After this, we’re going to live a normal life. I’ll pop the question and you’ll say yes, we’ll have a nice wedding, a sex-filled honeymoon, you’ll give me a few rugrats and that’s it. Soon you’ll forget about everything I’ve told you tonight, it’ll be a thing of the past like your actual boyfriend. Got it?” You nod slowly, everything in your body wants you to run from this maniac but you just comply with his demands. In reality, what else can you do? He has you where he wants you, there’s nothing you can do. You can fight him but it’ll only piss him off, you can plot an escape but he’ll find you, you can scream at the top of your lungs, but no one will hear you. Right now, it’s just you and him.

Nothing will ever change that.

“Come on, use that pretty mouth for something. Tell me you want me to take you, to claim you as mine. Say it.” He moves his hand from your chin and lowers it to your neck, his hand wraps around it and he uses his grip to bring you close. You swallow thickly, your rational side wants to deny him but that side of you that is grasping at a false sense of reality wins.

“I want you. I want you to make me yours right here and right now. Claim me.”

A smirk grows on his face and he slams his lips against yours, the kiss is a bruising clash of teeth and tongue. His hand remains on your throat, gripping the sides ever so slightly as he somehow deepens the kiss. His tongue explores your mouth, running along your teeth, the roof of your mouth and along your own tongue. You whimper against his lips as your lungs scream for air. You lift your hands to his shirt and clench the fabric in your fists, trying to signal to him that you need to breathe but he just takes it as a sign to continue kissing you. To keep stealing your air just like he stole your boyfriend’s place and made it his own.

Thankfully, he finally breaks the kiss. You greedily gasp for air and your eyes water as you pant. He smirks at the sight and releases your throat in exchange for one of your wrists. He pulls you along with him until you’re both surrounded by mirrors that haven’t been broken. He releases your wrist to grip your face, gripping your cheeks tightly as he forces you to look at yourself in one of the mirrors. He smirks at the way your eyes widen when you take in your reflection, your mascara is smudged and has stained your cheeks, whatever is left of your lipstick is smeared along your lips and your lips are now coated by his drying saliva. “So pretty like this. You always work so hard on making yourself look pretty but this is how you look best, completely ruined for me.”

About the Kinktober, I probably won't be doing a theme per day because I feel like that might be tiring. Also, we just did that for A.U.gust and I saw another Gallavich blog posting something like that for September, so I figured we give people a bit more freedom this time around. I'm thinking of either just a list of prompts that you can post whenever, or a bingo, or one ample/general theme per week... But I'm open to suggestions.

About the Masquerade: Yes, I know most people voted to have it along the Kinktober, but there was also a quite significant amount of people who said they'd rather have it after it. I figured the people who voted to have it alongside Kinktober would still participate it if I had it later, but the opposite was likely not true, so I figured this was better. Also, I will be requesting sign-ups, but they're just so I can organize everything, so the deadline will be quite close to the posting day. Posting will likely be on an AO3 anonymous collection (I'll have to test that first), and the guesses will be made through a Google Form. One more thing: I think it would be nice to have fanart/videos/gifsets as the prizes (preferably about the Masquerade fics themselves), both for the person (or people) who manage to guess the most authors correctly and for the author who manages to "deceive" more people (still deciding on that, but anyway...), so if you make any of this and would like to volunteer, let me know.

About the gift exchange: it was postponed for next year for three reasons: 1) there was no set event in February, so I figured this would be cute and fit the theme of Valentine's Day - instead of secret Santas, you'll have secret admirers ;) ; 2) it gives people more time to participate, since most other fandoms have their gift exchange events at the end of the year; 3) it leaves the Masquerade at the end of the year, which is an event with lower stakes (no one is expecting people to produce anything, so it's easier to cancel their participation if something happens). I reserved actual Valentine's Day for it, but I believe it'll actually happen throughout the week. The format will be the same as in the last couple of years, with participants picking the prompts they'd like to fulfill.

I assumed we'll be doing A.U.gust again next year, but that's not set in stone. Spring Cleaning is also a possible event, but we'll see. Gallavich Week will be happening, as always.
