"And here we go, Robert Gadling gets ready for his third shot at the pole vault tonight," the announcers call out. Robyn and Orpheus sit on the couch at the Walker's, eyes glued to the television set. Rose, Jed, and Lyta crowd around the living room along with Lucienne and Jessamy and Matthew and even Jo and Rachel. Everyone had come over for the watch party.
"And here he goes. He needs to beat Sam Kendricks's score by at least three tenths if he wants to get a spot on that podium tonight. When we saw him back in Tokyo, he earned himself a silver medal. Let's see if he can earn himself a gold tonight."
Robyn leans closer. He grips the edge of the couch, eyes wide as his father takes a breath and races forward, pole in hand.
"And here he goes! Strong start there, good grip on that pole. Distance is looking good, maybe a bit short and oh!"
Their dad plants the pole down and thrusts himself up, up, up! He curves around the upper bar and...he hits it. He comes falling down, pole and bar alike as he crashes down onto the mat. Robyn deflates.
"Oh. Oh dear. I—" the announcer laughs. "Well, that's just unfortunate. Let's play that back. So you can see here—" the footage pauses as their dad's feet just begin to tip over the upper bar. "—he's got plenty of room here, lots of space up above. Robert is known for his strength and his ability to get good vertical height above that bar. But as he comes down—" the footage continues in slow motion. Their dad curls over the other side of the bar like they've seen him do hundreds of times before. It slows down until it stops right when he hits the bar. Matthew squacks.
"Oh my god!" Rose laughs.
"Oh, he is never living this down," Aunt Jo pipes off.
"So you can—" Even the announcer laughs again. "You can see where he hits the bar. And it's-it's really unfortunate because everything else about this vault was nearly perfect. But it looks like his, uh. Well. His lower half got a bit in the way there."
The camera cuts to their dad standing up from the mat, wincing as he gets to his feet. And then it cuts to Papa in the stands. He's doubled over, whole body shaking, and Robyn knows immediately that he's cracking up.
"Did dad really just hit the bar with his dick?" Robyn asks.
"Robyn!" Lyta cries.
"What! That's what happened, right?"
Jessamy chuckles before patting his head. "Yes, starling. Make sure to tease him about it tonight, okay?"
"There's definitely worse problems to have in life," Matthew laughs.
"Well, I can see now why Dream married him," Lucienne says.
"Please stop talking, I don't want to think about my cousin's junk, please and thank you," chimes Jo.
Orpheus turns to Robyn, frowning. "Dad's not getting a medal, huh?"
Robyn sighs. "No. I don't think so. Maybe in one of the other events, though."
"Hm. That's true."
The camera cuts to their dad, where he's standing at the stands in front of their papa. Dream's face is red from laughter, and even now, he's still giggling. Hob's laughing now, too, pressing a kiss to his lips. Hob whispers something to Dream, who bursts out laughing once more.
"Well, at least he seems to be in good spirits," the commentator says.
"As does his husband," the other chimes.
"Unfortunately for team GB, we won't be seeing any medals out of this event. Let's head over to the Men's Vault now."
"I cannot believe this is how you will be remembered, husband mine," Dream says, running his hand down Hob's chest. They're back at his hotel room, away from the villa for the night, much to Hob's pleasure. Those beds sucked.
"Don't remind me. My damn dick still hurts from that thing. I can't believe that happened. Christ." Dream chuckles, pressing a kiss to his jaw
"Well. Now everyone will know just how...well endowed you are. And how lucky I am to call you mine."
Hob shakes his head with a smile. "Guess you're the real winner from all this, aren't you?"
"If I have you? Then I always am."
Hob wakes up to exactly 46 messages from friends and family and co-workers alike, all commenting on his "performance" last night. Half sent him links to various articles, all labeled something along the lines of "Olympic Athlete Betrayed by his Penis."
Dream nearly pulls a stomach muscle from laughing so hard.

Okay i am SO excited that people were interested so here it is. I need to preface this with the fact that it won't be totally 1-to-1.
9-1-1/The West Wing Fusion crossover AU thing
SO, i already said Bobby is the President. Not only does it make sense for his relationships with everyone else, but he is also very similar to Bartlett in a lot of ways: the Catholicism, the hidden illness (Jed's MS and Bobby's Alcoholism and PTSD), the strong moral compass and the way they are always everyone's go-to for advice. Also the way they deal with problems and conflict.
Athena is obviously FLOTUS. Unfortunately i suffer with Can't-Stand-Athena Disease, so i'm leaning on my love of Abbey for this one. But they're both very capable, intelligent women who can't be told what to do. Both are completely devoted to their families and are even self-destructive with that love sometimes. (Athena going after Amir (DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THAT - FUCKING ACAB) and Abby secretly treating Jed's MS and putting her lisence in question).
May and Harry should take on the roles of Zoey and Ellie respectively. May still being the older sibling, i just think they fit the personalities of the siblings better that way. Harry being distant and aloof until they have a breakthrough, May being close to the family and friendly with the other staffers. Also the Charlie/Zoey of it all.
Hen (my beloved) is Chief of Staff. This feels obvious. She's already Bobby's second in command, she's got the instict for it, and the respect of all the others. I also think she would still have a fire fighting background and she got into politics later. I just think that experience would be vital for her as COS, similar to Leo's military service. I also think a professional history like that would also commmand respect from strangers.
For Deputy Chief of Staff I'm (perhaps predictably) going with Eddie. I was toying with the idea of it being Chim but you'll see why i didn't got there when i explain his role. But yeah, Eddie's perfect for this one. Both he and Josh are dramatic about everything, they both have well-meaning hearts that sometimes results in them doing or saying stupid shit, they have deepseated issues that cause them to push people away. Also, need i say it? SHOOTING ARC! This also (again predictably i fear) allows for the EPIC ROMANCE of Josh and Donna to be mapped onto Buddie.
Which brings me of course to Buck. He's gotta be Donna. They've got the shared history of failed relationships with some not great people (but remain hopeless romantics anyway), Buck flitting from job to job and Donna not having much work experience go hand on hand too. Also they're both very capable and intelligent but hide it/don't realise that fully. I like to think that Maddie qas the one to get him his job amd Eddie was just a bit too scared to question her.
Now Maddie. This might be an unpopular decision because on the surface they are nothing alike, but I'm putting Maddie in Toby's spot. Not only does she suit Director of Communications perfectly – Maddie is the fucking QUEEN of coomunication (season 5 notwithstanding lol) but she and Toby share a lot of their values. Sure, Toby's a miserable, pessimistic asshole about it, but they both believe in a very black and white definition right and wrong. They are both loyal to a fault (even Toby's treason was an act of loyalty you can fight me on this but you will LOSE) and do everything they can to protect the people they love. Also i just love them both so much i want to fuse them into one because it makes me feel like a mad scientist in a lab trying to create the perfect character out of goo and slime and glitter.
Anyway! For Maddie's second, I'm really not sure. I was thinking maybe Linda or Josh but neither fit particularly well to me. Idk, let me know what you guys think.
Okay. Chim. Think how perfect he'd be as Press Sec. Please. That man is BORN to be on camera. He's charismatic and friendly and relatable, he comes across as approachable but fr who would cross him if he put his foot down? No one! Also. I IMPLORE you to please imagine him doing the Jackal. It was so hard to figure out who i'd trust to take up the mantel of CJ "baddest bitch around" Cregg because i love her so much but when i started to consider Chimney it felt obvious 😅 i also just think he'd love to have the opportunity to evicerate an asshole on live television, and he DESERVES that opportunity too. And if you were wondering: Yes I DO ship CJ and Toby. Hence Madney being their counterparts.
Now for my boy Charlie!!! It of course HAS to be Ravi!! Those boys are the sweetest loveliest boys on the planet! They pair up so well! I also have a headcanon that, similar to Charlie, Ravi has younger siblings he's always had to take care of because their mum died and their dad worked too much. So. Yeah. Also lowkey May x Ravi nation where are you please accept me into your ranks.
Anyway, i hope this is acceotable to everyone who was interested. I might write something in this AU one day but if you have ever interacted with me before you should know not to hold your breath lmao

Random Thoughts about The Rebound Ep 5 and 6 :
Let's give credit where its due, The Rebound remains a compelling story and these two new episodes haven't changed my view on the series. It's truly an interesting sport series. Even if you're not a fan of basketball or a fan of the main actors. I'm neither of those and I still find a real pleasure watching it. I would even say, it shouldn't deter you from giving it a chance.
▪️ So Ryu and Zen were back to square one in their relationship and they couldn't stand each other anymore in these episodes. Their disagreement was starting to be an obstacle for the team as they were constantly fighting on the court. Their coach figured out a way for them to make peace. He forced them to be tied to each other for 24 hours. When you can't escape the other one, you're forced to deal with it. It was easy to see they both missed each other, but what happened in the past is still remaining a sore point between them. Of course, Zen is still sad and lost about the disappearance of Ryu in the past, but we kind of get pretty fast that it's not the only thing which hurt him. From the beginning of the 5th episode, we had a flashback of Ryu and Zen when they were in middle-school. They were both showering and helping rubbing soap to each other. Then, they got this moment… There are a lot of interrupted moments between them. Zen was fully expecting Ryu to kiss him and he was eager to do it… but then Ryu freeze and decided not to do it. I believe Zen was clearly hurt by this too. Even if he can't really say it out loud, he has these very strong feelings for Ryu and he finds himself constantly disappointed by him. While being force to stay together all the time, Ryu and Zee's anger quietly dissolved to make they find their strong bond again.
▪️ The state of the team is totally linked to whatever Ryu and Zee are feeling when they are playing with the rest of the team players. When they are both in their right mind and happy with each other, the team is able to success in anything they want to do. Otherwise, when they are at odds or something is bothering them, the team isn't able to work well together. I'm not saying the rest of the players are just here to make contrast, but most of them remains solely background character. Only few of them seems to be important to the story: Jed who is mostly the comic relief, Prince who has a special bond with Jed (but it remains to be really seen), Shogun who is the basketball prodigy and Jedi as Ryu's friend. Lin is totally the token girl of the series who will be used to create some tension between the main couple as she has a crush on Ryu. Thankfully the story seems to have provided her with an alternative choice when she will see that she has no chance of being with her crush.
▪️ Last week, I thought it was Ryu who was hurt because he couldn't get Zen to see his feelings for him. I felt he was the one who was showing more his love. I think it was because both Q and Atom questioned him about it. It made me think it was him who was, at the moment, more in love or more aware of his feeling. However, now that I watched episode 5 and 6, it seems to me that it's the opposite. Zen is the one who has already accepted his romantic feelings for his friend, while Ryu isn't really sure about it. I mean, he likes/loves Zen. It was shown countless times, but at the same time, he doesn't really want to talk about it or to make others know about it. By the end of episode 5, we get a kiss between them. It was full of lingering feelings for something they wanted to experience before, but didn't get to. The way Ryu was slowly moving his face towards Zen to kiss him sweetly. He was also stroking Zen's hand. It felt to me like he was finally experiencing something he deeply wanted to do, for a long time. Ryu didn't have any hesitation and gladly consented to this kiss because it is also something he desires. The moment is truly precious for them and it is reinforced by the melody of the soundtrack. However, when Ryu heard the sound of the dropped bottle, he quickly opened his eyes and you could see how scared he was and he turned over fast. It left Zen alone who was still looking at him, as if he was still processing everything. Ryu was flustered and he was looking at the ceiling, while Zen was still looking at him, hurt again. I get deeply emotional thinking about this scene.
▪️ Let's talk about Atom now. I have to make amends. I was so hard on him last time after I described my thoughts about episode 3 and 4. I felt like we couldn't trust him and he would hurt Zen… Turns out, he is better than I thought he would be. I think he really wants to make a friend. Since he never really seems to have a real friend in his life, the first person who was nice to him, he got too attached. The way he wants to be close to Zen is so wrong, but at the same time, I believe he just doesn't know how to do it. That's why it gets across as clingy and a bit controlling. I'm not saying he is right. I'm just feeling like he needs to understand boundaries and how to create a healthy friendly relationship with someone. There is also the fact, that he doesn't just want to be friend with Zen, but he also has a tiny crush on him too. Atom has grown in a family that expects him to devote his time to sport. His father seems to be really authoritarian and Atom can't really do what he wants. It seems he made really a lot of effort to be available when he met Zen. I felt bad for him. It is not easy to grow up in a family where you have to constantly prove your worth and when they expect you to stand out. Now we know he is also a basketball player in a rival team. I'm glad he remains true to sport values and didn't befriend Zen because of this. Of course, he becomes the perfect love rival for Ryu and he seems determined to be close to Zen. I wonder what it will bring. Now that he is again in my good book, I feel like I'm back with the same dilemma I had while watching Deep Night where I couldn't decide if Seiji had to be with Pan or Ken.
▪️ I also felt really bad for Q. It seems to me that he is stuck in this life without any way of escaping it. Yes, his relationship with Boss Tos is hot, but at the same time it’s kinda pitiful. There is nothing sexy or healthy in their relationship. Q doesn’t seem to have any feelings for him and he only has sexual intercourse with him to protect Ryu. However, it’s not exactly working well and he is back into threatening Ryu to work for them and to play street basketball. Q is always dragging Ryu back to the trappings of his past. At the same time, we can’t deny the protectiveness Q has for him. I really think he has his best interest at heart, but unfortunately Q is not a big shot in the “streets”. He is just a small fry.
I really want to see what is going to happen in the next episodes.
#my thoughts#random thoughts#thai series#thai bl#bl series#bl drama#the rebound#the rebound the series#episode 5#episode 6#ryu x zen#ryuzen#I admit I felt for Atom in these episodes#Q's life is so sad. How did he ended up in this life?

Mail Order Bride, Part 8: Arrivals and Departures
Pairing: Sheriff!McCoy x Paige Stone (OFC). Other characters: Nyota Uhura, Deputy Jim Kirk, Eleanora McCoy, Donna McCoy. Evan, Lyla, Jacob, Tyler (Stone family OCs), Doc Anderson
Word Count: 8540
General warnings: As the title implies, mail-order bride arrangement, parent’s illness, outlaws, overprotective sister, Wild West-level violence but some fluff as well. Each chapter will have individual warnings as needed.
Chapter warning: Talk of pregnancy, probably still more medical inaccuracy, confrontation with ex, reunion with family, Leonard being just the best husband ever, parental death
A/N: This is set around the 1930′s in the Western U.S. I will endeavor to remain as true to the historical timeline as I can. There may be some....bending of history to fit the narrative, but hopefully nothing major. This is, after all, a work of fiction. :) Please let me know if you’d like to be tagged in future chapters!
A/N 2: This is longer than my other chapters, I know. I thought about splitting into two, but the title wouldn't have worked if I did. It's one of the most personal things I've ever written. In this chapter, my art is imitating my life, and I'm sure you'll understand what I mean when you read it. As always, thank you for reading, and on with the show. ❤
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Tears of joy brimmed in Lyla's eyes at seeing her firstborn after such a long absence. "My darling girl," she replied softly, and held her arms out to beckon her daughter to her side. With Leonard's help, Paige carefully lowered herself to sit on the edge of the mattress. She leaned forward as far as her stomach would allow, but she was still within her mother's reach. "Oh, my sweet girl, I can't believe you're here," she sobbed, then gasped as she looked closer. "And you're pregnant?!"
Paige nodded and felt the waves of emotion crashing over her all at once, from being back in her childhood home and seeing her family again. Mother and daughter embraced another few moments and then pulled back. Paige felt Leonard's hand on her knee as he crouched beside her, his thumb caressing the area. She covered his other hand with her own and gave him a watery smile.
Lyla turned to Evan and insisted that she wanted to join the others on the main floor of the house. He tried to discourage the idea, stating that she needed to rest, but Lyla wouldn't hear of it. She was tired of being cooped up in bed, and she was eager to hear more about the handsome man who accompanied her daughter on such a long journey. Evan finally relented and helped his wife walk out of their room, while Leonard assisted Paige.
By the time the four of them arrived in the living room, everyone was occupied with some sort of activity. Two were reading, while the rest were locked into either playing or watching an intense game of chess. Evan helped to get Lyla situated in her chair, as Leonard did for Paige but on the sofa. Jacob brought each of them a glass of lemonade, then took his perch on the arm of the sofa and flashed an expectant look to his sister.
She rolled her eyes at Jacob before clearing her throat for her announcement. "Everyone, I would like you to meet my husband, Leonard McCoy. Len, this is my family." When she called each sibling's name, Leonard acknowledged them with a wave or a nod. Her younger sisters were shy and giggly, as she expected they would be. In contrast, her brothers tried to appear as her "protectors", puffing out their chests to appear stern and tough. She secretly smiled, but also rolled her eyes at their antics.
"Mama, Papa, I know the contract said I would be marrying a man named Matthews," she started, her father nodding in agreement. Paige explained what kind of man Jed Matthews was, and how he met an unfortunate end after getting caught cheating at cards. She mentioned how she didn't know about any of Jed's shortcomings until she was saved by the sheriff, Leonard, at the train station.
After the shock wore off, Leonard quickly assured his in-laws that it wasn't their fault Jed had lied in his advertisement. He told them he admired Paige for what she was doing and her reasons for it. It made him want to do what was right for her and her family by taking over the contract. "I didn't expect to fall for her," he admitted with a sheepish grin. "However, she had my heart almost from the get-go. And it sure didn't hurt that she was the prettiest and kindest woman I'd ever met," he winked at Paige, causing her to blush.
Evan and Lyla could see how much in love their daughter was with her husband, reminding them a bit about their own courtship. It might not have been the most traditional of beginnings, but they knew Paige had a good man by her side. Because she trusted him, they silently agreed to do the same and officially welcomed Leonard into the family.
***
After a dinner of spaghetti and garlic bread, Tyler and the younger kids took care of the dishes. Once that chore was finished, Paige was roped into a friendly game of Monopoly with her siblings. Leonard chose instead to watch, so he could keep close to his wife and make sure she was comfortable. Between turns, Paige's and sometimes Leonard's hands roamed over her stomach as if to soothe the baby growing inside.
Throughout the game, Evan and Lyla sat their respective chairs, soaking up the atmosphere. Even though there were a few heated moments, the jabs traded between siblings were all in the spirit of the game. At one point, Evan glanced at his wife, who had a contented smile on her face as she watched her children laugh amongst themselves.
He couldn't help the grin that spread across his own face as he turned towards Lyla. "You are so beautiful when you smile, my darling," he noted.
Lyla chuckled softly. "Thank you, my love. I am....so happy right now. All of my children, together, under one roof, enjoying each others' company. Our eldest daughter is married to a good, strong, kind man, and she's having his child. My heart is full, Evan. This is one of the most perfect moments I could ever hope for, and I don't want to miss a second of it." She reached over and held out her hand, palm up, which he took in his and gave it a gentle squeeze.
***
A few days later, Paige and Leonard volunteered to do the grocery shopping for the family. Her sisters, Charlotte, Holly, and Molly, along with her youngest brother, Eddie, asked to accompany them. The girls insisted that they knew best what was needed at the house, while Paige wanted to make sure that Eddie was included.
When the kids asked if they could tag along, Leonard shrugged and quipped, "the more, the merrier," as he held the door open for his wife. They borrowed Evan's 1932 Chevrolet Confederate BA, since it was big enough to fit them all. He gave Paige a wink and a smile before closing her door and settling into the driver's seat.
Once inside the store, Leonard decided they should split the grocery duties. "Us men will handle the butcher's counter, while you ladies get started on the rest. That sound good to you, little man?" he asked Eddie. The young man's eyes grew wide as he gravely nodded and gave Leonard the thumbs-up. Leonard patted him on the shoulder, then gave Paige a long kiss on the cheek. "See you soon, darlin'," he grinned.
"Well, girls, looks like we have our work cut out for us," Paige told her sisters, smiling as the "men" walked away. Her eyes followed the pair and watched as her brother grabbed Leonard's hand, causing him to look down at Eddie. Before they disappeared around a corner, her husband shot her a mischievous wink and a small wave. She felt the tears forming in her eyes, knowing that, without a doubt, Leonard was going to be an amazing father.
"Sissy?" Charlotte piped up. Paige hummed in response, finally tearing her eyes away to focus her attention on her sister. "Are you having a boy or a girl?" she asked.
"Oh, Charlie, I won't know until the baby is born," she explained.
"What if you're having twins, like us?" Holly gasped excitedly.
"I am NOT having twins, Holls," she chuckled. "Twins would be wonderful, but it won't be this time around. I'm sure Doc Anderson would've told us by now if there were two babies instead of only one." Paige marked off a few more items on the list and massaged her lower back. She was about to head for the next aisle when she heard someone call for her from behind.
"Oh, my goodness, Paige? Paige Stone is that you?" the voice exclaimed. It was one that Paige would recognize anywhere, especially after all of the nasty remarks that had ever been thrown in her direction.
Paige cringed as she stopped in her tracks, her hands tightly curled around the shopping cart handle. She took a few deep breaths as she tried to keep her stress to a minimum for the baby's sake. "Hello, Abigail," she finally managed.
Abigail gave Paige the once-over from head to toe, her eyes finally landing on Paige's midsection. "Hmm, I see congratulations are in order! You do know who the father is, don't you?" she snickered.
Before Paige's outrage could take hold, a man approached Abigail's cart squinting at a piece of paper in his hand. "Darling, I found the list you were looking for. We should start with--" Thomas abruptly ended his statement and replaced it with a question. "Paige? Paige Stone? What on earth are you doing back in Columbus?"
By this time, Paige's patience had reached its end. "First of all, it's Paige McCoy, if you don't mind," she snapped. "I left here and got married almost a year ago. I live happily in Boulder, Colorado with my husband, and he happens to be the sheriff," she retorted. "Second, I only came back for a visit and to introduce him to my family. Not that it should matter at all to either of you."
"Is that a fact? Well, I had heard that you left town, but no one knew exactly why. I mean, there were so many rumors, it's hard to know what the truth really is. So, tell us, Mrs. McCoy, where is this husband of yours?" Abigail sneered, then leaned in close to Paige. "You know, I don't think there is a Mr. 'Sheriff-of-Boulder' McCoy husband. I think you made him up. You're wearing a fake wedding ring and only telling people you're married to avoid the disgrace of being an unwed mother out in public," she hissed.
"Excuse me?" a deep voice from behind them demanded. Everyone turned to see that Leonard and Eddie had returned from the butcher counter. He stood with his arms crossed over his broad chest, eyes narrowed at Thomas. "Is there some sort of problem here?"
"What business is it of yours? Who in the world are you anyway?" Thomas scoffed.
Leonard's face darkened at the other man's attitude. "I'm her husband, Sheriff Leonard McCoy, if you don't mind," he replied evenly.
Thomas audibly gulped. "W-well, you see, Paige and I are old friends who happened to run into each other after a long time," he stammered.
"You know, in my experience, 'old friends' usually don't make baseless accusations about a fake marriage. I don't take kindly to people who think it's okay to harass my wife. No one--and I mean, no one--has the right to speak to my wife like that." He snaked a protective arm around Paige's waist and tucked her into his side as he glared at Thomas and Abigail.
Paige glanced up and locked eyes with him and mouthed the words, "thank you" to her husband. Then he kissed the side of her head and mumbled "I love you" against her skin.
"W-well, we have a lot to do today, but perhaps we can chat some other time. Come on, Abigail, let's get our shopping done," Thomas insisted, gently tugging his wife's elbow. "Congratulations, Paige. On your marriage, and um....everything," he hastily added, then steered his wife away from the scene.
Leonard hooked a finger under Paige's chin and tilted it up to catch a glimpse of her warm hazel eyes behind her wire-rimmed spectacles. "You okay, sweetheart?" he asked.
"Of course I am, my love," she replied. After a peck on the lips from her husband, she returned her attention to the task at hand. "Okay, now that they're gone, what's next on our list?"
***
That night as they lay snuggled together in bed, their talk turned to the events at the grocery store. Leonard laughed at Holly's question about having twins, and how Charlotte wanted to know whether it was a boy or girl. "Son or daughter, makes no difference to me, only that he or she is healthy and so are you," he remarked.
Paige smiled and patted his chest. "That's exactly the way I feel as well," she murmured. "I saw Eddie take your hand on the way to the butcher's counter. I thought that was so sweet, Len," she whispered. "He's always been kind of quiet, being the youngest of eight, but I've never seen him take so easily to someone he just met. Means he trusts you, and that's one of the ways I know you're going to be an incredible father."
Leonard's heart swelled at hearing his wife's praise. He admired how easily she interacted with her brothers and sisters, with understanding, kindness and love. It reinforced what he already knew, which was that she would make an outstanding mother. "Say, who was that woman who was giving you so much trouble in the grocery store?"
She snorted with disgust at remembering the earlier incident. "Ugh. Her? That was Abigail Forrester, now Abigail Morgan, Thomas' wife. He decided to end the relationship with me in favor of one with her," she muttered.
"He let you go? Then I suppose I should send him a fruit basket, or thank you card, or something, because he really did me a huge favor," he affirmed with a laugh. When he saw the shocked and annoyed look on Paige's face, he quickly moved to clarify his thoughts. "I-I mean, he broke your heart, which I should punch him for, but if he hadn't ended things with you, we might never have met."
"Hmm, I suppose you have a point," she replied grudgingly. "I can't even imagine my life without you in it, and I don't want to, either."
"Darlin', a world without you is one I don't want to live in. The only place I want to be is where you are mine and I am most definitely yours." He curled his arm around his wife to pull her closer for a kiss that quickly turned passionate. "I love you, Paige."
"I love you, Leonard. Sweet dreams, my love." She reached behind her to turn off the light and closed her eyes.
***
Soon it was time for the McCoys to begin their return trip back to Boulder, Colorado. The entire Stone family insisted on seeing them off at the depot, including Lyla. Accepting her decision was not without some difficulty on Evan's and Paige's part, each encouraging her to stay home and rest. However, Lyla maintained that she felt well enough, and would therefore accompany them to the station.
With the luggage situated on top of the car, everyone piled in as best as possible, and they journeyed to the train station. Paige and Leonard were on the receiving end of many hugs that day, from siblings and parents. She could tell that her husband was still a bit overwhelmed with all the attention from her large family as compared to his smaller one. Nevertheless, she happily noted that he had relaxed a bit as compared to when they first arrived.
Finally, it was Evan's and Lyla's turn to say their last goodbyes before it was time to board the train. Leonard stuck his hand out to Paige's father, who grasped it and pulled him into a fierce hug. "You're a good man, Leonard McCoy," Evan remarked, his voice gruff with emotion. "I know I don't need to tell you to take care of my daughter. But, as her father, I'm required to remind you," he chuckled.
"I understand, and thank you, sir. You have my word that I will do everything in my power to take care of Paige. You and Lyla did a great job of raising her, and she's the best thing that's ever happened to me. I hope you and some or all of the family can visit after the baby is born," Leonard suggested.
"We'll do our best, though a lot of that depends on Lyla and her health. She's a strong woman, God love her, and she's battling this with all she's got. I know she'll keep fighting so she can meet her grandbaby at some point," Evan remarked.
A few feet away, mother and daughter were exchanging their goodbyes. "I'm so proud of you, Paige. You found yourself a wonderful man who loves you, and now you're going to be a mama, too," she gave her a watery smile.
"I'm scared, Mama," Paige whispered. "I mean, what if I can't do this? What if I'm not fit to be a mother?"
Lyla cradled her daughter's face in her hands and locked eyes with her. "Darling, listen. You've had plenty of practice with your brothers and sisters, and they love you. I have faith that you can do this, that you will be an amazing mother. Trust yourself and trust that husband of yours, and you'll be all right, sweetheart," she whispered, a few wayward tears sliding down her face.
Paige nodded and covered her mother's hands with her own. "I love you, Mama," she choked out.
"I love you too, my sweet girl," Lyla answered, touching her forehead to Paige's and took a deep breath. By this time, the men had joined them. Sensing the heavy exchange of emotions, Evan and Leonard put their arms around their wives in a kind of group hug.
When the conductor bellowed out the last call, Leonard and Paige broke away and reluctantly boarded the train. They found their seats, which had a window that faced the platform. As the train pulled away, everyone waved frantically until they were out of sight. Evan gathered his family and shuffled back to the car to go home. Although the house felt a little empty without Paige and Leonard, the family took solace in the new memories made from the visit.
***
In the weeks since the McCoys returned home, Leonard was kept busy training his two new deputies, Carter Davis and Pavel Chekov. At the same time, Paige was occupied with setting up the nursery. Leonard and Jim had placed the crib against the wall, with a changing table at one end and a chest of drawers next to it. Little by little, Paige had been washing the baby clothes and blankets she had received thus far and placing them in the drawers.
Nyota and Christine were only too happy to help their dear friend as they fawned over the tiny clothes and shoes of various sizes being added to the drawers. Sometimes Donna and Eleanora would visit as well, often leading to Leonard coming home to a house full of giggling women. He didn't mind at all, because he knew Paige needed the distraction and companionship while he was at work.
Fortunately, his deputies were doing well enough in their training that he was able to leave the office a bit early one day. He was looking forward to seeing his wife after some of the long hours he'd been working. Before leaving town, he stopped at the florist for a bouquet of assorted blooms that he hoped would brighten her day.
However, when Leonard walked in the door, he was met with silence rather than the usual group of chattering women. Since this was unusual, he called out for Paige. He didn't hear anything at first, so he called her name again, straining his ears as he walked further into the house. That was when he heard a soft, "in here" from his wife. A strangled sob escaped with it, accompanied by a sniffle coming from the direction of the kitchen.
Paige was sitting at the table, her hands rubbing absently over her ever-growing stomach. She was brokenly humming what he surmised was a lullaby, tears streaming down her cheeks. He watched as her hands stopped and she dropped her head into her hands. Her shoulders began to shake with silent sobs and Leonard could stand it no longer.
He lightly knocked on the doorframe because he wanted to make her aware of his presence without startling her. Paige gasped in surprise, her fingertips hastily wiping the tears from her eyes. "Uh, L-Len, you're home early. Is everything okay?" she asked, flustered.
Leonard moved further into the kitchen and placed the bouquet on the table. He knelt between Paige's legs, one hand resting on her thigh and reached up with the other to cradle her face. "I believe I should be asking you that, darlin'," he remarked. Then he held out his arms and Paige wasted no time in throwing her arms around his neck. She clung to him as closely as she could at this stage in her pregnancy.
His hand stroked the back of her head as her sobs shook her body. "Oh, sweetheart, what's going on in that pretty head of yours?" he murmured.
After a few minutes, her cries had subsided to mostly sniffles. Paige drew back so she could wipe her cheeks and face her husband. "I....I was thinking about Mama today. Been doing that a lot since we've been back, trying to prepare myself. Because sooner or later, this illness of hers is going to run its course."
"Baby, I know you're probably still a little shaken up after seeing her. Maybe because you haven't been there to know the extent of how her illness has affected her. She's still here, though, and fightin' so hard to stay here," he affirmed.
"But, I have to face the fact that someday, she's not going to be here. And it's not fair, Len! There's so much she'll miss, like birthdays, anniversaries, and seeing my brothers and sisters grow up. I....and what about our child? Will she even be here to meet him or her?" she cried.
"Darlin', I wish to God I knew the answer to that question. And you're right, it isn't fair. Not to you, or your mama, or anyone. I can only imagine how hard this is for you and your family to be experiencing, and I wish you didn't have to," he responded.
"I know, I wish it wasn't this way as well. I can't even fathom what my father's going through, watching the love of his life battling for every breath. Knowing that one day, she won't be there across the table or on the other side of the bed from him," she added softly.
Leonard pulled her even closer, flush with his chest and his chin resting on top of her head. "It would leave a terrible achin' in my heart if for some reason you were gone from my life," he shared. "I don't know if that's somethin' I'd ever get over."
"I feel the same, Len. You're in my heart and my soul, and a hurt like that would take a long time to get over, not that I ever could. I just wish there was something more I could do for her, for them. I'm the oldest, I feel like I need to step up and take charge and help out. Only, we have our life here as well," Paige noted.
"Sugar, the time will come when your help will be needed, though maybe not in the most obvious ways," he offered. He felt her head nod against his chest in response.
Paige noticed the bouquet on the table and caught Leonard's gaze, flashing him a shy smile. "Are those for me?" she wondered.
Without breaking eye contact, he nodded and grazed her cheek with the back of his hand. "Though no flower in the world could ever match your beauty, my love," he murmured.
"You sure are a smooth talker, Leonard McCoy," she replied with a wry grin. "I love you so much."
"I love you too, sugar," he returned as he caught her in his embrace once again.

The next couple of months pass without much incident, with Paige's body continuing to grow as she drew ever nearer to her due date. During that time, she made sure that the house was spotless, as if preparing for a royal visit. If she wasn't scrubbing or sweeping something, she was rearranging the nursery, anything to keep herself busy.
Leonard tried to convince her that everything was perfect, and that she was only going to make herself more tired. Fortunately, his mother explained that Paige was "nesting", which was completely normal and part of getting ready for the baby. She stated that the best he could do would be to support her and keep her from becoming completely exhausted during this phase. There would be time for that later, while bringing his son or daughter into the world.
As she neared her approximate due date, Paige began to experience some of the symptoms of the first stages of labor that Dr. Anderson described. It started slowly, with some tightening around her midsection that lasted for a moment or two, then subsided, only to return some time later. She alternated between wanting to sit down and relax to feeling restless and going for a walk around the house. Then there were the endless trips to the bathroom at all hours. She was almost to the point where she considered sleeping in the bathtub, if only to be nearer to the toilet.
On one of these nights, Paige felt the urge, so she carefully eased out of bed so as not to wake her husband. As soon as she stood, she experienced a gush of fluid from between her legs. This was followed by a sharp stab in her abdomen, causing her to cry out in pain. At her outburst, Leonard jolted out of bed and rushed to her side. He helped her to the chair in their room while he regained his bearings and focused on the next steps.
"It's all right, sweetheart, you're going to be okay," he soothed. "I'll be right back, I'm just going to get something to clean you up," he winked then ran off to the bathroom. He returned with a warm wet washcloth and helped her into a change of clothes. "Let's get you back in bed and as comfy as possible, then I'll call Doc Anderson."
With Leonard's assistance, Paige got back into bed, with several pillows stacked behind her to keep her sitting upright. It wasn't long before there was another sharp pain to her midsection. She gripped the sheets, attempting to ride out the wave of extreme discomfort she was feeling. Her breaths were coming out in short bursts as a way to manage the contraction until it eventually subsided.
Once he was sure Paige was stable, Leonard kissed her forehead and ran downstairs to the phone to call Doc Anderson. The physician relayed some instructions and promised he and his nurse would be at their house as soon as possible.
Leonard then called Jim to put him in charge of the sheriff's office, after he relayed a few instructions concerning Carter and Pavel. Jim assured him that everything would be fine, that all would be taken care of in his absence. He reminded Leonard that he needed to stay focused on Paige and the baby and sent his best wishes for a smooth delivery.
After he replaced the phone receiver, he walked over and unlocked the door. As soon as he turned the latch, he heard the start of another contraction and rushed up the stairs. "How far apart are they, darlin'?" he asked, grasping her hand.
He watched as she scrunched her eyes shut and tried to breathe through the pain. "Ab-about....e-every f-four m-m-minutes," she answered between bursts of air.
"Okay, sweetheart, I've got you. Doc Anderson is on his way--" he paused when he heard movement downstairs, then smiled. "In fact, he just got here. We're up here, Doc!" he called.
Soon Dr. Anderson and Nurse Kelley reached the top of the stairs and they strode in with kind smiles to assess the situation. "Looks like Baby McCoy is intent on making an appearance," he commented. "Let's see where we are in the process and how your labor is progressing, shall we?" He moved to the end of the bed and began his examination.
Leonard moved to sit behind his wife, her back against his chest. The friendly but efficient physician took note of how quickly the contractions were occurring to determine the stage of labor. Dr. Anderson concluded that Paige was fully dilated and would soon feel the urge to push, and encouraged her to do so. Leonard was her support, both physically and emotionally, mumbling a stream of reassuring words in her ear.
A few but exhausting hours later, a new life was welcomed into the world and into the McCoy family. A healthy baby girl, Layla Ann McCoy, was born and it was love at first sight for her parents. After she was cleaned up and checked over, Dr. Anderson placed the newborn on her mother's chest, her father looking on in wonder.
"Congratulations, Sheriff and Mrs. McCoy," Nurse Kelley remarked, with Dr. Anderson echoing the sentiment. "She's beautiful."
"Gets that from her mother," Leonard replied softly, then kissed Paige's temple. With their eyes still locked on their daughter, they thanked the doctor and his nurse for their assistance. Dr. Anderson stuck around long enough to make sure the baby got started with her first feeding. Then he and Nurse Kelley bid the new parents goodbye and quietly exited the house.
***
News of Layla's birth spread like wildfire among their friends and Leonard's family. Donna and Eleanora barely waited all of twenty-four hours before they stopped by to see the new addition. As expected, Auntie Donna and Grandma Eleanora were immediately smitten with the baby. They also brought a few prepared meals to keep in the refrigerator. This would prove useful for the new parents while they adjusted to a new schedule or if they didn't feel like cooking.
Other visitors soon followed, with Leonard's protective side making an appearance when Paige or Layla showed signs of needing sleep. His girls were of the utmost importance to him, and he wasn't afraid to escort visitors out of the house if he thought they'd stayed a bit too long.
Leonard also made sure to send the birth announcement in a telegram back to Paige's family back in Columbus, Ohio. A few days later, Evan sent a return message that stated they would be arriving in Boulder within two weeks' time, and Leonard was hopeful that the visit would include Lyla. With her inclusion, it would mean doctors deemed her well enough to travel that far from home, as long as she was with the family.
He wanted their visit to be a surprise, yet was well aware that Paige would want everything to be perfect, including a spotless house. However, he was also learning the challenges of adapting to a newborn and how it can wreak havoc on a new parent's sleep cycle. For this reason, he called for reinforcements, namely Nyota, Christine, Eleanora, and Donna. The ladies all pitched in to keep things neat and orderly, as well as to provide a bit of respite for Paige.
On the day of the family's arrival, Leonard got ready for work as if it were any other day. Even though he knew it was going to be anything but an ordinary day. He couldn't wait to see the look on his wife's face when she saw her family standing on their doorstep. The thought curved his lips into a smile which was still present when he went downstairs for breakfast.
Paige had completed Layla's morning feeding, then placed her in the bassinet that sat at one end of the table while she fixed breakfast. She had just finished sliding some scrambled eggs onto Leonard's plate when he waltzed into the kitchen. He paused at the table to bid his daughter good morning and kiss the top of her head, cooing at her to try and coax a smile out of her.
He soon abandoned his efforts of a smile from Layla and turned his attention to Paige. "Mmm, good morning, sweetheart. This breakfast looks amazing, thank you," he beamed before leaning down and pulling her closer for a kiss. He plucked the plates from her hands and turned to set them on the table before he pulled out her chair for her.
"Thank you, my love," she replied brightly. They each dug into their meal, with sounds of approval coming from Leonard after nearly every bite. When he was with Jocelyn, he was responsible for most of the cooking, which was mediocre at best. Though his ex-wife's mother taught her the basics, Jocelyn's culinary knowledge didn't develop much beyond those fundamentals.
Luckily, Paige was more than qualified in this area, which saved his palate but threatened to expand his waistline. She was especially gifted with her baked goods, from cookies and cakes, to muffins and pies. Prior to having Layla, her sweet treats were frequently for sale in Nyota's café. No birthday in Leonard's office passed without a birthday cake from Mrs. McCoy, in whatever flavor the birthday person desired.
When Leonard was finished with breakfast, he placed their plates in the sink to be washed later, then returned to the table. He leaned down to kiss the top of Paige's head, but first hooked a finger under her chin to catch sight of her warm, hazel eyes he adored. "Sure wish I didn't have to work today. I'd much rather stay home with you," he grinned.
"Hmm, I'd much rather you stayed home with me too," she agreed. "But you still have those two new deputies to boss around, and that's probably more fun than I'll be having around here."
If you only knew, he thought. "I suppose I should get going. Lots of 'bossing around' to do," he smirked. "I love you, sweetheart," he remarked as his lips met the crown of her head.
He drew back to see her beaming smile directed towards him. "I love you too, Len. Have a good day at work, and please be safe," she added.
"I will darlin', I promise," he responded. He pulled his watch out of his pocket and checked the time. Only another hour before the Stone family would be arriving on the train, and he couldn't wait to reveal the surprise to his wife.
He leaned over Layla's bassinet and noticed she was asleep. His finger gently traced her delicate cheek, being careful not to wake her. "Be good for Mama, babygirl," he whispered before heading for the door. He paused at the threshold, shot a wink at Paige over his shoulder, then closed the door behind him.

After Leonard departed, Paige moved into the kitchen and began to tidy up from breakfast, humming to herself as she worked. Our first anniversary is next week, she suddenly realized. A smile crept up on her face when she thought of the events of the past year and how much her life had changed. From leaving home and arriving in Boulder, to the friends she's made, and of course, in her marriage to Leonard. And now, I'm a mama, she noted as she leaned down to kiss her sleeping daughter's forehead.
First anniversary is said to be paper, which lead her to the idea of a book as a gift for Leonard. He devoured crime novels, which some may think unusual for a sheriff surrounded by it every day. Not Leonard, though, as one of his favorite authors was Agatha Christie. Paige made a note to herself to check the bookstore in town for Miss Christie's latest novel when she's there for her weekly visit with Nyota.
Three hours later and satisfied with her progress, Paige was enjoying a glass of cold water when she heard a knock at the door. Puzzled, she set down her drink on the table and made her way to the door. "Who is it?" she called. "Len, is that you?" she asked, thinking he may have decided to come home for lunch but had perhaps forgotten his key.
"It's me, sugar, but I can't reach my keys out of my pocket. My hands are full, can you please open the door for me?" he explained through the door.
Paige unlocked the door and the sight before her was enough to knock her over with a feather. Her parents and all of her siblings were standing on the front porch, having traveled all the way from Columbus, Ohio. "SURPRISE!!" her family whisper-yelled.
Her hand flew to her mouth and tears sprang to her eyes as she scanned everyone's face until finally landing on her husband. "Sorry, darlin', for fibbin' to you, but I very much wanted this to be a surprise."
"Oh, it is, it absolutely is, Len," she affirmed. "This is wonderful! I'm guessing this why you're not at work today?" she wondered.
Leonard nodded. "Jim's mindin' the office for the next few days, so I can be here with you and your family. Can ya forgive me?" he asked.
Paige hesitated, but only for a moment before her face broke out into a huge smile. "Of course I can, but there's nothing to forgive, Len. This is the best surprise ever!" she gushed. "Goodness, where are my manners? Come in, come in, everyone!"
Leonard helped usher the family into the house, where hugs were exchanged all around. Evan and Lyla remarked how lovely their home was, while the kids talked about their first train ride. Everyone was trying to keep quiet because the baby was still sleeping, but it wasn't long before the first cry was heard.
Paige rose from her seat at the table and reached inside the bassinet to calm the awakening child. "Shh, sweetheart, it's okay, Mama's here. Mama's here," she crooned. Leonard was at her side, his hand stroking his daughter's hair as she worked through the process of waking up. He pressed a kiss to the top of Layla's head and offered to change her diaper. Paige carefully transferred the baby to her husband's waiting arms and gazed fondly at him as he walked upstairs.
"We named her Layla Ann McCoy. She'll have to meet her Nana, Papa, and all of her aunties and uncles after she comes back downstairs from a diaper change," Paige giggled. "While we wait, would anyone like anything to drink?"
A few minutes later, Paige was pulling the glasses out of the cupboard when she was startled by the arms sneaking around her waist from behind. A small shriek of surprise escaped her, while she felt the rumble of laughter in Leonard's chest as he pulled her close to his body. "Relax, darlin', it's just me. I left our little one in the very capable hands of her grandmother so I could help you," he explained.
The couple returned to the group with the refreshments and distributed them around the room. In the meantime, Layla had since left her grandmother's arms and had been passed to her grandfather. Evan's eyes shone with unshed tears as he gazed at his granddaughter, her hand clasped tightly around his index finger. "She's beautiful, Paige. Most perfect thing I've ever seen," he whispered.
Lyla reached out her hand, beckoning her daughter to her side. "She's amazing, just like her mother," she affirmed.
"Thank you, Mama and Papa. She's really a good baby, not too fussy. Of course, as soon as I say this, she'll start crying and prove me wrong," Paige giggled and everyone else joined in. "Where is everyone staying while you're here? I'd love for you to stay here, but we don't have enough rooms," she mentioned.
Leonard gently placed a hand on her shoulder and her attention swung to his soft gaze. "Ma and Donna offered up the empty rooms in their house, which isn't too far away from here. Just up the road," he confirmed.
Paige slumped into his side as he curled his arm around her and held her close. "You really did think of everything, didn't you, my love," she murmured. "Thank you so much, Len."
"Anything to see a smile on your lovely face, sugar," he replied as they watched everyone interact with their daughter.

The next few days included socializing with and getting better acquainted with Eleanora and Donna. Leonard drove Paige and the baby to the house on his way to work so she could be with the family. Once he got her settled in, he grabbed himself a muffin and a coffee, kissed his wife and daughter goodbye, and left for the office.
When they all headed to town for the weekly grocery run, they stopped by Nyota's café for lunch. Not only was she happy to see her best friend and Layla, but to meet Paige's family as well. Warm hugs were exchanged, and there were free hot fudge sundaes all around, much to the delight of Paige's siblings.
Before the last night of the family's visit, Paige decided to have an early Thanksgiving dinner, since everyone was together. Leonard's mother and sister were invited, as were the sheriff's deputies and their partners. The seating arrangements had to be creative, as the table wasn't large enough to accommodate everyone, but no one cared. Being together was the most important, and as long as they were, that's all that mattered.
Since Paige did most of the cooking, she was shooed out of her own kitchen when it was time for clean-up duty, albeit under protest. Evan and Leonard assumed dish duty, while Jacob and Tyler hung around in case there was any "man talk" going on. Paige and the younger siblings joined their mother and the others in the living room, where Layla was being fed, courtesy of her Nana.
Paige watched as her mother guided Layla through the feeding process, burping her every so often. After eight children, Lyla was definitely an expert, though each child was different for her. "I remember when you were this small," she remarked softly, her eyes never leaving the baby's face. "After you were done feeding, you'd snuggle right into the crook of my arm and go straight to sleep."
"Layla does pretty much the same thing, whether it's me or Len that's feeding her," Paige replied. "How're you doin', Mama?" she wondered.
Lyla sighed. "I'm doin' the best I can, sweetheart. I take it one day at a time, try to get the most joy possible out of every day. Your father, bless his soul, has been with me every step of the way, no matter what, in good days and not-so-good days. He's definitely taking the 'in sickness and in health' portion of our vows very seriously," she added with a watery chuckle.
Oh Mama, she thought as she fought back the tears gathering at her lash line.
By this time, the kitchen was all clean and those on duty for it returned to the living room. Seeing that Layla was asleep, Leonard gently scooped her up and took her upstairs and tucked her into her crib. She fussed a little at the loss of contact with him, but soon relaxed and settled back into sleep mode.
When he returned to the living room, Evan was in the middle of a story about something that happened at his workplace. Jacob chimed in afterwards with news from his job, and the others talked about what they were learning in school. One by one, Paige's brothers and sisters were showing signs of sleepiness, thus it was agreed for everyone to return to Eleanora's for the evening.
The next morning, Leonard and Jim drove the family and their luggage to the train station for the trip back to Columbus. Paige and Layla rode with Leonard, while Donna and Eleanora tagged along with Jim. Many tearful goodbyes were exchanged, along with lingering hugs and wishes for a safe trip home. Paige took Jacob and Tyler aside and implored them to look out for their parents in her absence, not that they needed to be reminded.
When the conductor hollered the final call for ticketed passengers, the Stone family reluctantly peeled themselves away and boarded the train. As luck would have it, they managed to secure window seats for one last look before they were pulled away from the station. Paige balanced Layla against her hip and waved her little hand to the family as the train departed.

The day of Layla's six-month appointment was a bright, sunny day, with only a few wispy clouds in the sky. Dr. Anderson was pleased with her development and how she'd reached every milestone for her age. Leonard and Paige ended the day with lunch at Nyota's café and visited Donna and Eleanora before finally heading home.
Since Layla had fallen asleep in her car seat, Leonard carried her upstairs to her crib to continue her afternoon nap. He fully intended to sneak in some quality snuggle time with his wife while his daughter slept. With Layla occupying so much of their time, it was important to him that he keep that physical connection with Paige. He wanted to show how much he loved her, not only as a wife and mother, but also as a woman.
Paige sat down on the couch and started to arrange the pillows in the corner, leaving room for Leonard to join her. She liked to sit and rest her back to his chest, his arms holding her close to his body. She was reaching for a blanket to drape over them when the phone rang, which caused her to freeze in her movements.
She rose from her seat to answer the phone, each step filling her with trepidation. Most anyone she knew preferred to communicate in person, rather than use the telephone. As she approached the ringing phone, her fears grew that this would be the call she'd been dreading for many months. "Hello?"
"Hey, Paige," the voice on the other end answered shakily. It was Jacob and it sounded like he'd been crying but was trying to hold it together. "I have some news for you about Mama."
Paige took a sharp intake of breath at his response. She didn't notice that Leonard had returned to the living room and immediately knew something had happened. He rushed to her side and wrapped his arms around her from behind. "What is it, Jacob? What's happened, is Mama okay?" she asked urgently.
Jacob explained that about a week ago, Mama had fallen in the kitchen. When she stuck her hand out to brace herself for the fall, she ended up with a deep cut on her thumb. "Papa took her to the hospital to get stitched up. When they took her vital signs, the results with her heart and lungs caused the doctor to be concerned, so she was admitted."
"Wait a second, so she's in the hospital?" she wondered. By Jacob's hesitation to answer, she knew there was more to the story, so she asked him to continue.
"They hooked her up to one of those machines to give her breathing treatments, only it wasn't really helping much. Over the past few days, she kept getting weaker until....I'm so sorry, Paige, but Mama's gone," he choked out.
The receiver dropped from Paige's hand and her knees buckled under her; however, Leonard fortunately caught her in time. He guided her back to sit on the sofa, then went back to the phone. He could hear Jacob calling out for his sister, so Leonard assured him that he would take care of her. He offered what he hoped were some comforting words, then ended the call.
Paige was still in a state of shock, not knowing what to think or what to do. All she knew was that her mama, the person she turned to for guidance and share her joys, was now gone. And she didn't get the chance to say goodbye. That thought alone opened the floodgates and she broke down as if her heart had shattered into a million pieces.
Leonard returned to her side instantly, gathering her in his arms to comfort her. "Sweetheart, I'm so sorry. I know how much your ma meant to you," he murmured. Although he'd only met his in-laws twice, he felt as if he'd known them since the day he and Paige met. They welcomed him into their family, without question, despite their non-traditional courtship.
As he held and comforted his distraught wife, his thoughts drifted to when he lost his father, David, all those years ago. An incurable illness had taken his life as well, which left a teenaged Leonard as the man of the house to look after his mother and sister. Perhaps that was why he became a sheriff, so he could protect those who couldn't do so for themselves.
After some time, Paige's sobs gave way to quiet whimpers and sniffles, though Leonard continued to hold her. His hand rubbed up and down her back to soothe her while he whispered words of comfort in her ears. When she placed her palms on his chest and pushed a little, he loosened his hold a bit. He brushed the hair from her face and tucked it behind her ear. Then he wiped the tears from her cheeks with his thumb and kissed her forehead.
It wasn't much longer before they heard Layla's cries, signaling she was done with her nap and wanted out of her crib. Paige started to rise from her seat, but Leonard nudged her as he insisted he would attend to their daughter. He hooked a finger under her chin to tilt her face up to meet his, then leaned in and kissed her lips. "I'll be right back, my love," he promised.
While she waited for Leonard to return with Layla, she could hear him up in the room, chattering away with her. It brought a small smile to her face, hearing how sweet he was in his one-sided conversation. She was so lost in thought that she didn't notice right away that he had returned to the living room, Layla on his hip. "See there, sweet pea? There's your beautiful mommy," he cooed. "She's kind of sad right now, and I think she needs some lovin's from you," he winked.
Paige gave Leonard a tired smile and held out her arms. "Come see Mama, sweetheart," she replied softly. He obliged, and watched as she embraced their child, eyes closed and gently swaying her side to side. He decided that some tea may help his wife relax, so he quietly excused himself from the room.
Once he had left, Paige positioned Layla lengthwise on her thighs, with her head resting on her mother's knees, and her feet pointed at her stomach. Layla's hands tightly grasped Paige's thumbs, while her remaining fingers curled around her daughter's tiny fists. "Someday, my little love, I'm gonna tell you allll about your grandmother. She only met you that one time, but I know she loved you sooo much. We even named you after her. Well, sort of, anyway," she gave a watery chuckle.
Leonard stood silently in the doorway, watching, as Paige continued. "I remember everything she ever told me, everything she taught me, and I can't wait to share it all with you." She brushed away a teardrop that had landed on her daughter's forehead before picking her up and placing her on her shoulder. "I love you so much, Layla," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. Her eyes then landed on Leonard, tears streaming from them in earnest now.
He quickly crossed the room and sat down beside her, pulling mother and baby close to his side. "Shh, it's all right, sweetheart. I've got you," he soothed. They stayed curled up together for some time, until Leonard felt Paige's breathing had evened out because she'd fallen asleep.
Leonard gently plucked Layla from her mother's arms and rose from his seat. After placing his daughter in the bassinet, he nudged his wife until she was laying down on the sofa. He draped a blanket over her sleeping form and returned to pick up his daughter. "Let's get you somethin' to eat, hmm?" he suggested as they headed to the kitchen together.

I got dreams but I can't make myself believe them
Set during the Pilot ep of Transplant. Claire finds out Jed is a patient from the restaurant crash. CW for canon-typical whump and medical/emergency situations as well as cursing. Recommended listening: Homesick, Noah Kahan & Sam Fender, You're Losing Me, Taylor Swift
Claire doesn't know if Atwater calls out to her before the firm touch lands on her shoulder; on nights like these there's so much going on around her that she doesn't have enough real estate in her brain for all five senses. But if Wendy needed her for anything related to the mass casualty they're in now, she would've shouted across the ED until Claire noticed, so now Claire goes as still as she has all night and inclines her head slightly in her friend's direction, letting the attending murmur in her ear.
"Jed just came in," she says. "He's a patient from the crash."
Claire stays frozen, feeling her heart rate climbing under her sternum. "Well, that explains where he's been. Need me to convince him to sit down and get patched up?" Not that she's had much luck with that tonight, but she and Jed have an understanding. Making him hold still for sterilization and bandages is fine. It's easy. It gives her brain a plan instead of a worst case scenario.
"No, Claire, Dr. Curtis just hauled him up to the neuro team in the OR."
She bites the inside of her cheek, hard. She can't see Atwater, and Wendy can't see her; neither of them have moved from their tight position in the corner of the hallway as the rest of the chaos rushes past. "And? How bad is it?"
"EMS says they found him with a fucking hole in his skull," Wendy answers, her voice full of disbelief. "To decrease ICP, probably, but who could do that in the field-- I don't fucking know."
"Head trauma, probably had to include a fractured skull, the probability of brain damage is..." Claire shakes her head when the textbook answers are replaced by visions of Jed in those situations. "I'll go notify his emergency contact."
"Yeah, that would be you."
She's already stepping away, so she can't resist turning back to frown at her friend. "Still? No."
Wendy ticks off the possibilities on her fingers. "Psycho ex-wife, teenage son, ex-girlfriend who happens to work in the ER. Who would you pick?"
"Well." Claire stares down at the scuffed tile under her sneakers. "Keep me updated, then. I'll try to come see him if he makes it through surgery."
"Or if," Atwater says under her breath, evidently only half-listening.
"That's what I said." Claire looks her friend in the eye only briefly. "He's here now. I've got more lives to save."
Her patients don't listen, and she picks a fight with a random cop, and the whole ED is a mess. Somehow, though, Claire doesn't mind. The longer she goes without having to face the reality of Jed's condition, the better...
Even if she's just delaying the inevitable.

Burden Chapter 8 Sneak Peek
Chapter 8 will be coming on Friday! Here's your peek!
💀
"It's already happening. There's nothing you can do. She's asleep and dreaming."
"Then she's not beyond my reach."
The Corinthian shrugged. "Oh, I think she is. Now that she knows you're planning to kill her."
Dream pushed himself into the horrific dreams molding together just as she and her brother turned towards him. "You need to wake up!"
"Don't listen to him, Rosebud. You're the one with the power now, not him. This is your dream."
"It's his dream for your world," Dream corrected.
The Corinthian smiled at Rose. "Then let's make it yours. Whatever you want, Rose. A blank canvas!"
The dreams of her brother and the other humans vanished, and Rose's eyes went wide with fear. "Where's Jed?"
"Jed's fine. He's upstairs, asleep; he's right next to you. This dream is yours now. The Dreaming is yours now!"
"The Dreaming is yours? Is that what he told you?" Dream demanded coldly.
Rose looked up at him, confusion evident in her eyes. "He told me you were gonna kill me."
"Did he tell you why? When a vortex brings down the walls between dreams, she creates a single volatile dream that will collapse in upon itself and take the waking world with it. Your world. Everything and everyone will die."
The Corinthian bent down to Rose's ear. "Don't believe him, Rosie."
"It's happened before. I failed in my duty. An entire universe was lost."
"He can't kill you if you kill him first."
"Killing me may save your life, but it won't save the lives of those you love."
"I'm tryin' to keep you alive here!" The nightmare growled, the playful mask he bore slipping at last.
"I'm trying to keep your world alive," Dream argued.
The Corinthian growled, "You have to choose one of us, Rose!"
"Enough!" She shouted above their noise, waves of power rolling off of her and amplifying her voice. Rose Walker looked to The Corinthian. "If I'm as powerful as you say I am, then I will find my own way. In the meantime, the walls go back up." She lifted her hand, willing the walls between the dreams to return.
A loud groaning sound echoed all around them as the mist began to overtake the room. Rose drifted back closer to Dream as everything around them changed. "What is this? What's happening?"
Trees, gnarled and dripping with blood, surrounded them as dark figures moved in the woods, and all manner of noises surrounded them. The tree roots wound around The Corinthian's limbs as The Nightmare tried to take a step back from the figure in white that now stood at the treeline. "Daunt."
Dream wanted to reach out to her, to speak to her, anything, but Daunt was not herself. Her blood-covered form was no more than mist and bitter frost. Dream took hold of Rose's arm and pulled her behind him. "At last," Daunt said softly, but her voice sounded anything but. "You have come to see the damage you have wrought."
The roots of the trees began to squeeze the nightmare tightly. He groaned as his bones began to creak beneath the wood. "This is still your dream Rose."
The figure in white turned her head, and ice crept along Dream's form under her gaze. "No."
Rose shivered from behind him and quickly uttered the words she'd heard him say, "This dream is over."
"NO!" Daunt screamed, lunging forward just as the dream vanished from around them.
Returning to the Waking World, to the hotel, his nightmare breathed a relieved breath and stood once again as Dream looked down at his now-healed hand. His nightmare took off the dark shades that shielded the rows of teeth from view. That anger that filled him became unbearable now as he looked over at the nightmare with watering eyes. "She trusted you, loved you, and you betrayed her."
The Corinthian sneered. "You, of all people, have no right to judge me, Dream. After all, it was you that drove her away in the first place! If you think I'm going back to The Dreaming with you-"
The floorboards beneath their feet began to tremble and crack. Mist filled the room as tall trees tore through the floors, and The Forest began to bleed into the Waking World. The Corinthian looked around him with stoic features as roots quickly began overtaking everything in the room. Standing in the crowd, Daunt breathed heavily, the veil gone, revealing her bleeding chest and wide eyes. "You do not get to leave me again, Corinthian."
"Daunty," the nightmare said softly. Roots twined around him as she walked up the stage and past Dream to stand in front of his rouge creation, the creation that had betrayed her.
"Have you any idea what it was like?" She demanded. "Knowing all this time that it was you that plunged the blade into my heart. That you… my friend… would doom me to this."
For the first time, Dream could see the sorrow and pain in the nightmares eyes as he looked up at Daunt. "I'm sorry."
A sob escaped her throat as everything in the room grew colder. "LIAR!"
The roots stabbed through The Corinthian in various places, digging deep into his body. He took it all with a mere grit of his teeth, never looking away from Daunt as she stepped even closer to him, a blade… the blade poised in her hands and pressed against The Corinthian's chest. "Do it." He told her. "I deserve it."
Dream moved closer to her, ignoring the way it stung his skin. "Daunt…"
"No," The Corinthian told him. "Do it, Daunty. Finish me."

Oh, what's this? A sneaky second peek? 👀 Wonder what that's about
🦌
The white stag stood between two large trees, watching Dream. Matthew looked over to where his master was staring and quietly asked, "What's that thing?"
"A creature I thought had long abandoned this realm," Dream answered as the stag turned away and began walking into the forest. Something inside him forced his feet to move, to follow the creature into the dark woods.
"Oh! So we're following the weird lookin thing?" Matthew cawed loudly, taking to the sky to fly after them.
The trees grew closer and closer together, and darkness began to make it difficult to follow the creature forward. Mist rolled over Dream's boots, and a chill seared his skin, forcing him to halt. This was not Fiddlers Green. This was nothing of his realm. "The Forest."
A few steps ahead of him, the stag looked back and huffed, its breath visible in the frozen air, before it continued forward, stepping over the gnarled roots. Dream moved, too, a newfound desperation in his steps as they emerged from the thick trees into a small glen of frozen moss. Death and blood hung in the air all around them. The hollow resembled that which he'd seen in the short dream Daunt had influenced.
The stag took a half-step forward, a small frozen twig snapping beneath one of its hoofs. The sound echoed far louder than it should have, filling the silence with it. A heartbeat passed before a black shadow lunged out of the trees and dug its claws into the stag's back, clawing and biting until the poor creature collapsed and its blood coated the white ground. Dream stood perfectly still as the beast tore into the stag's flesh and devoured the steaming meat.
"Holy shit," Matthew breathed from a branch beside Dream. The beast's head turned, revealing two grey eyes locking onto Dream. It turned, claws clutching the stag's body tightly, and let out a loud screech. Blood and spit coated its sharp teeth as its foul breath wafted to Dream's nose.

@founderscouncil / continued from here for jed
it's good that flori is undead. it means she can pretend she doesn't have a heart. 'cause if she pretends she doesn't have one, she can just... ignore the fact that it's breaking. that it's splitting right down the middle because of jed tien.
the undead don't cry. so she's ignoring the fact that her eyes are rapidly filling with tears - or the vampire equivalent of it.
what happens in the summer, stays in the summer.
and he's right about that. logically, she knows he's right about that. it would be different with school back in session. and it would be difficult. his pack, her friends.
no. best to cut things off now. go back to their respective corners and communities.
but she doesn't want to cut things off.
flori wants to keep doing this, wants to keep seeing him, wants him, wants him, wants him, wants him, wants him, wants---
"i have, actually. multiple times. there's even this macabre theory going around that sandy - the blonde white girl - actually drowned and that the whole movie is just something that's happening in her head while she's unconscious in the hospital as she passes away at the end of it all."
and that's... probably not helping.
geez, no wonder he's calling it quits.
instead, the tiny vampire clears her throat. "i don't believe that. that thing you said about us not being compatible. you're just saying that to push me away. because we have - had - something real and that scares you and whenever you get scared, you want to run." her face is anguished as she looks up at him, silently begging him to pull her close, to take her into his arms and kiss her again, to open his eyes and see just how much he means to her.
but flori doesn't say any of that. she grits her teeth in order to keep the tears at bay. remains quiet, focused. as if she's playing chess with him and is contemplating her next move. then she sighs and readies herself for the last thing she needs to say before she lets go because she can't spend the upcoming school year tainting the best thing that ever happened to her with all her little flori-isms.
"i felt it, jed. and i know you did too. but if this is what you really, truly want, i'm not gonna twist your arm about it. just know that we could be - could've been - good together. really good."
he made her feel less afraid. he made her feel more herself. coaxed parts of her she'd long since hidden out of the shadows and dark crevices of her heart. with each tender kiss, he taught her to believe in herself again. with each caress, he made her see that she was worthy of love and affection and adoration.
despite her past. or maybe even in spite of it.
and with that said, flori turns to walk away from the man who has held her heart since she arrived at the salvatore boarding school. but if jed so chooses, he could still stop her. even the quickest vampire finches can be caught by clever hands.

45 - Us Against Triad
Part 46
Her Life Means Everything
@mrs-fanfiction-2001 @the-big-bad-klaus @queenieala @samsgirl93
Walking through the school I chose to wear a cameo long sleeve shirt and ripped blue jeans. My hair in braids falling down my shoulders. Klaus and I brought the girls back to the school early since they were on a mission to save Landon. "My squad answered the Bat-Signal." Hope declared simply.
"She's coming!" Both Saltzman twins grumbled to each other, clearly upset about the information from yesterday.
Nikola scoffed, flashing her wolf eyes towards them. "I need all the help I can get, so please put your twin war on pause."
"Why is he going? He hates Landon." Ralph noticed Jed standing by me. Klaus was near the front door waiting.
Jed explains. "Look, you're the Alpha. If Landon's your pack, that makes him ours."
"Where's MG at?" Kaleb asked, looking around.
Hope headed towards the front door opening it to see armored guards outside. "He's on his way. Let's load up while we wait for him. Come on."
"Oh, sorry. We were about to knock." The leader guy spoke up.
Halting in my tracks I grasped Nik's hand in mine seeing them holding loaded crossbows with stakes among others. "Klaus?"
"Easy love." He mumbled under his breath towards me.
Lizzie snarled standing beside me on the other side. "Who the hell are you?"
"Name's Burr. Triad Industries." The stranger replied back.
Hope and Nikola attempted a spell together but nothing happened. "Propellere."
"Kids get out of here. We'll handle them." I declared vamping forward with Kaleb following my tail until his hand started burning from the sun. Getting in the sun I groaned feeling my hands bursting into flames until I vamped backwards into Klaus's arms.
He scans me over carefully seeing confusion written on all of our faces. Something was clearly wrong if our witch spells and daylight weren't working. "Bloody hell, Maddie!"
"What you don't got is magic. Which is why your daylight ring won't work. And what we have are stakes, wolfsbane... and other things. So I think you should invite us inside." The Triad guy declared before their entire team entered the school. They were in search of a magical artifact that belonged to Malivoire.
Klaus closed the door behind me quickly locking it so we were in the kitchen by ourselves. Rubbing my thumb over one of my hands I sucked in a breath still not believing that they made a way for my daylight ring to not work. The only way it didn't work is if the witch that cast the spell undid it as far as I know. "This shouldn't be possible...Klaus what are you doing?"
"Since you and the girls can't leave the school. I'll go out to stop them." He opened one of the kitchen windows staring at me with that determined father look on his face. "I'm the hybrid. They can't keep up with me."
He started climbing out the window until his back hit the sun and he started to burn. I gasped, covering my hands over my mouth quickly yanking him back inside. "Klaus. Oh my god!"
"Bloody hell...that shouldn't be possible!" He bared his teeth with me running my fingers through his hair. "I'm the hybrid...and an original...we don't need daylight rings!"
Blinking my eyes his wounds weren't healing as fast as they normally would. "Then it must be something surrounding the school. Meaning we're completely trapped here. We need to find our daughters." Footsteps headed towards Alaric's office when we entered the hallway, causing me to gasp seeing the Triad guy drawing a gun towards our daughters and the Saltzman twins.
"You're not very scared of me, are you? How about now?" The Triad guy said, finally holding the gun in his hands.
Hope chuckled not thinking he was serious. "That's your plan? You're gonna shoot a kid?"
"Plus if you do I'll rip out your vocal cords and put your head on a spike!" Klaus growled when the Triad guy just smiled in our direction as we stood behind the kids.
He explained loading the gun right in front of our eyes making me gulp in fear. "This gun would never harm a human child. You three, however... These bullets were formed from the mud of the Malivoire pit and weapon by Triad scientists. They can break the skin of any supernatural like a hot knife through butter. Fester. Infect them. Disintegrate them from the inside out."
"We don't know where the chalice is." Josie exclaimed, shifting her gaze to her friends.
Burr smirked, slowly moving the gun in between pointing it at each girl. "I believe you. This is just for fun, really. Eeny... ...meeny... ...miney... Moe." He fired the gun shooting Josie who jumped in front of Lizzie who was going to get shot.
"It's okay. It's okay. It's okay." Hope and Lizzie lowered her body to the ground.
Creating my fangs I vamped forward about to snap Burr's neck but he apparently had one bullet left in his gun because he pulled the trigger almost hitting me in the heart. "Mom!" Nikola and Hope screamed in terror.
"Maddie - urgh Maddie!" Klaus vamped forward catching my body as I collapsed onto the floor. Gripping the sides of his black jacket I gasped seeing a dark liquid covering where the bullet went in.
Burr put the gun away as some men entered the room putting us all inside the cell in the basement. "Lock them up."
Pressing my back against the wall I winced trying to remain calm. Josie had Hope and Lizzie at her side while Nikola was on the other side with her father. Klaus gripped my freehand in his with my other made into a fist. "You're gonna get thrown this, Maddie. You hear me. I love you."
"I love you too, Klaus..." I sucked in s breath squeezing his hand in mine watching Nikola struggling to not start sobbing.
Hope was watching us then focused back on the Saltzman's. "You guys, I'm so sorry. I mean, I dragged you both into this, and I have absolutely no idea how to get us out of it."
"Well, that is just not good enough, Hope. My sister is clearly dying, and we did not wait ten years to become friends with you and your twin for you to not come through with your annoyingly perfect Hope Mikaelson heroics when we need you the most." Lizzie shakes her head crying while holding her sister's hand tightly.
Josie agreed with her taking a hold of Hope's hand before Lizzie took a hold of our daughter's other. "She's right, for a change. It's hero time, Hope." Secours later the guard that was watching us dropped to the ground revealing MG who broke us all out.
Klaus draped an arm around my waist helping me walk through the school until we made it upstairs to our daughters room. He lays me down on the bed tucking my hair out of my face as Hope explains. "Dad, we have to go get Landon and put whatever is blocking our powers down."
"Then I'm coming with you." He rose to his feet still grasping my hand in his.
Nikola raised her hands in the air, not agreeing with him coming along. "Dad, I know that you want to rip them apart. But mom is in pain and may not have long unless we stop them. So you have to stay here and protect her."
Shifting my body around so I was sitting up more against the pillows I waved the girls over with my hands. Feeling a sharp pain racing to my heart. "They're right, Nik...girls come here.."
"I love you, mom. Always and forever." Hope mumbled through some tears intertwining one hand with mine. I could hear her heart skipping a beat with worry.
"I love you too, mom." Squeezing my hand in hers I grabbed Nikola's hand too where she was crying heavier than her twin.
Pulling them both in a hug at the same time I sighed in relief. Each of them throws an arm around me leaning into my embrace. "Girls, I want you to listen to me. No matter what happens to me I love you. I love you so much - and I am so thankful that I got to be a mom and have you two. Just remember, that I will love you always and forever. Now go save the school my little heroes."
Nikola's POV
My sister and I quickly entered the Triad building hearing a creature fighting someone. My sister gasped using her magic to prevent the last piece to raise Malivoire. Whipping my head around I gasped seeing the creature trying to kill my boyfriend so I rushed forward gripping the metal bars. "Landon!"
"Nikola...I knew you'd find me." He gasped in relief at seeing the two of us.
My sister sat down the final piece getting in a fighting stance nodding in my direction. "I just followed the clues you left in that voice mail. You're great at riddles. We should probably add fight training to your coursework, though. Feel free to take notes."
I ran forward running forward where the creature focused on us swinging his chain of bones but he throws me on my back harshly where my sister attempted a spell on him but it didn't work. "Incendia!"
"He won't die. You know sci-fi stuff. Help me. How do we kill him?" Groaning I forced myself to my feet snapping off on my boyfriend.
He tried to correct me but I wasn't in the mood. "Uh, Headless Horseman is more fantasy."
"Get to the helpful part. Ignari!" I snapped throwing a spell but it didn't work yet again.
Landon snapped his fingers seeing a head hanging from the creatures cap. "In-in the O.G. cartoon, he had a pumpkin head. That... he might keep it with his horse? Correction! He's got it under his cape. kill the head, the body dies. That's science faction."
My sister grabbed a pole knocking the head away from the chain. Running forward I grabbed the head and another pole stabbing it straight through where the creature fell dead onto the floor. "We did it...we actually did it." I breathe out running my fingers through my hair until I looked down to my soulmate. Bolting down the stairs I jumped into his arms where he stumbled backwards a little catching me stumble a little.
"Woah easy there...so uh what now?" He asked holding me up smiling sitting me to stand on my own feet.
Resting my hands on his shoulders without thinking I leaned up on my toes pressing my lips onto his mumbling in between a long kiss. "I love you..."
"What?" He tried breaking the kiss.
Wrapping my arms around his neck I drew him back in for another long kiss. "Before anything else happens you need to know that I love you..." Breaking the kiss I stared into his eyes feeling the bond just telling me to just keep kissing him. "I was terrified that what I was feeling was just the soulmate bond but I don't care...Like we wouldn't be like my parents...but now I don't care...'Cause I love you, Landon Kirby."
"I mean, it wasn't a huge secret, because I love you, too, Nikola Mikaelson. And I forgive you for anything that needs it. And I know it looked like I was losing when you got here, but that's just how Phoenix combat looks, so..." He replied grinning ear to ear resting a hand to my cheek kissing me deeply.
Twisting my hands into his curls I deepened the kiss. Landon wrapped an arm around my waist moaning into the kiss until we heard Clark's voice making us separate. "Nothing like young love, is there? Shame it has to be so short-lived." He throws the knife into the pit of goo.
"No!" My twin cried before Landon picked up the chain of bones throwing it around Clark's neck killing him.
I gasped feeling turned on by my boyfriend's sudden moves. "Damn. Phoenix combat's no joke."
"Guys we've got a big issue." Hope blurted out trying to think of a way to stop it. "Nothing's ever immortal. I mean, not really. Nature won't allow it. There's always a loophole."
Landon looked for an idea from her or me. "Any brilliant ideas? Because I think we're running out of time."
"Just one. But you're gonna hate it." My sister stepped forward cupping the side of his neck then snapping it quickly knowing he would come back.
I gasped sharply, bending on a knee beside his body. "Hope, what the hell. Why would you do that!"
"Because he would have tried to stop me. Now I need you to put what I say down in your phone for Dr. Saltzman-" She started but I cut her off handing her my phone. "Just call him yourself."
She put Dr. Saltzman on speaker phone so I could hear him too. "Hope, tell me what the hell you're about to do right now before you do it."
"Clarke won. He found the final artifact, and he tossed it into the pit, which is Landon's father, by the way. And now Malivore's gonna rise unless I stop him. Landon got all the answers, but, basically, Malivore was created by the blood of a werewolf, a witch and a vampire. It used to be that only they could destroy what they created, but nature found a loophole. By making me and Nikola." My sister scoffed, dropping her freehand at her sides staring at me. "The Tribrids. I'm the loophole."
Dr. Saltzman raised his voice as I was putting the pieces together. "Hope, you listen to me. Now, this is a theory, okay, and you don't even know if this is gonna work, so you just sit tight, and you wait for me to get there."
"Sis, are you insane? It'll break mom and dad's heart if you do this. And what you're just gonna leave me without giving me a say!" I shouted at her, feeling some tears welling in my eyes.
She spoke out to both me and Dr. Saltzman provided a point that we were important. "After all this time, I mean, my purpose is finally clear. Think about it. I'm the answer to all of this. I can remember things about Malivore that no one else can. That Triad weapon didn't affect me. Did my blood heal Josie and our mom?"
"I am not okay with this." He warned through the phone.
"Neither am I. We're twins, sisters, each other's best friend.." I felt my voice croak alongside some tears.
Hope sighed grasping my hand in hers where I caught sight of our matching bracelets hitting each other. "I know. But you will be, because once I toss myself into that pit, no one at school will remember me. Including you." We thought it was cute how mom and aunt Caroline had rings so we made our own.
Dr. Saltzman begged her, trying to talk her out of this. "Hope. You listen to me."
"I don't want anyone at school to miss me, because they're my friends. Maybe I would have seen that sooner if I hadn't been beating myself up all this time." She started crying to our uncle knowing that one of us had to make the hero move. "This is where you tell me that even though you wish you could change my mind, you know I'm doing the right thing. This is the part where you tell me you're proud of me."
Uncle Ric's voice started breaking as I attempted to wipe away more tears that kept coming. "You know I'm proud of you. You know it. What is it you need me to do?"
"Call maintenance. Have 'em pack up my room. Take my files, all those notes I know that you keep about me, and burn them. Along with Landon's journal." My twin explains sternly to him.
He kept disagreeing as I noticed Clark was starting to wake up but I might just be overly emotional. "Listen, if you want to erase yourself, that is on you, okay, but you can't ask me to do it, too."
"I'm sorry, Dr. Saltzman. But I trust you more than I trust anyone." She admitted before hanging up the phone taking my other hand in hers pulling me in for what would be our last hug.
Burning my face into her shoulder I struggled to get my words out. "How could you do this...how could you not tell me or our parents. I can't...I don't want to forget you, sis. We're supposed to face life together always and forever...I'm gonna jump with you-"
"No, Nikola you can't. You don't have to do this. I have always looked up to you because you look out for me. Being the hero and all...so now I'm taking your place. So you can live a happy life with Landon." She mumbled into the hug.
I barely broke it grasping her shoulders just letting myself cry. "But I want you there with me too, Hope. So let me jump with you."
She moved one hand up to my cheek sniffing through tears before I felt her do a spell making my body collapse onto the ground. She wrapped her bracelet around my wrist mumbling before I passed out. "I love you, Nikola."
"Dr. Saltzman?" Rubbing my eyes I heard Landon's voice talking to uncle Ric.
He replied through the phone. "Landon. I'm on my way."
"Okay. Uh... I don't... I don't really know what happened." My boyfriend runs his fingers through his hair seeing that I was awake.
Dr. Saltzman clearly was confused and I could hear it in his voice. "Yeah, well, that makes two of us. I just found a note that you'd need me."
"I guess I do." My boyfriend hung up the phone pulling me up to my feet seeing that I was wearing matching bracelets on each wrist. "How did you get the same bracelet twice?"
Shrugging my shoulders I hold it in hand seeing one charm that has different initials then mine which doesn't make sense. "I have no idea. Do we know anyone with the initials H. M?"

Welcome to my JED talk! In this episode I will explain how Jedediah has physical contact as a love language but due to him being small and constantly manhandled and feeling vulnerable he now has trust issues, taking his love language away from him and making him fear any form of physical contact!
Despite all of this, he still shows small (no pun intended) signs of affection towards the ones he fully trust!
Examples:
• Could be a bit of a reach, but Jedediah wanting to fist bump Larry as a sign of trust, strength and to show he believes in him to save everyone.
• Chest bump! He doesn't turn Octavius down, he does give it a thought for a solid 0.1 second but agrees to do it without questioning him. He makes the first move too. Just what buddy pals do, no danger in that!
• Reaching out for comfort! Is he doing this to keep Octavius close, to protect him or to feel protected? It's a dangerous situation but he makes the first move to grab onto something he finds safe, he grabs Octavius' armor, but not in a way that makes him look vulnerable or extremelly scared, but cautious. He stands by his belief of not allowing physical contact to be vulnerable.
• Hug! There is a lot going on here. It's a happy moment, he lets himself get lost in the euphoria and reaches out to hug Octavius without hesitation! However, he stops and is the first one to let go. Is he allowed to be soft? To hold and be held? Octavius notices, he was wrapping his arms around Jed's body the whole time, but at Jed's slight change of expression, he stops too.
• Holding hands! The toughest action of them all. The first time Octavius asks him to hold his hand it was in another dangerous situation. There was a lot going on, yet Jedediah never makes the first move to reach out to him. He is not allowed to be soft. Why would he hold his hand? That can't be right. He doesn't really turn Octavius down, it simply confuses him and has to process it. Was Octavius being vulnerable in front of him? He was, and he begins to understand.
They face another deadly situation, it was the end for them. Is Jedediah really going to be so stubborn as to not seek something that comforts him while dying? No. He is vulnerable, he is soft, he is small and he needs someone close to him. He reaches to Octavius, who taught him that being vulnerable is okay. They hold hands.
• Closeness! One of the biggest changes of both Jed and Oct. I already made a post of its own about this, but in NATM 2 we can see them in different pockets while in NATM 3 they both share one! Being close to someone is not a threat, he enjoys Octavius company and he lets him be near.
• Larry's goodbye. He openly tells Larry to embrace him! Even if it was some sort of joke, he wouldn't actually mind being held anymore. After all he learnt that despite his size it's alright to feel small too, and that people aren't a threat anymore. He is safe so he opens up and so does his arms.
My take on this is that Jedediah is okay with physical contact! His being and experiences around him made him reconsider about how open he should be towards others as it could potentially harm him but, as long as I remember, he never turned down someone he knows for being touchy with him. Octavius never did something to Jedediah without asking beforehand (despite the hug, which was both ways, and he let go the moment Jed changed his body language). He asked for the chest bump, he asked for the hand. He let Jedediah get comfortable at his own pace, he let him make the first moves, he never rushed things either. He knows Jedediah doesn't hate physical contact, but he also knows Jedediah is too stubborn and deep down afraid.
Octavius taught Jedediah that it's okay to hold and be held.
And I think that's beautiful.
Thank you for coming to my JED talk!
#jedtavius#judtalks#night at the museum#natm#octavius#jedediah#jedediah smith#also they are in love but I wanted to go a bit deeper than that!#jed stopping the hug because he made eye to eye contact with a smiling oct who was SMITTEN for him because he gay panicked is also a reason#also not holding his hand because he gay panicked again#but we all know that right#anyways enjoy this <3#feel free to share more examples or thoughts!!!#i also like to think jed doesnt like physical contact and only lets oct get near him#tiny bfs#<3

Hello, I'd like to ask for a slasher HC on how would the slashers react with a switch(dom and sub) s/o and if you can, could you include Danny "Jed" Olsen, dead by daylight's version of ghostface with Billy and Stu? (it's okay if you can't) ✨🖤
I’m sorry but I don’t write for Danny :( I did include all of the slashers I do write for though, so I hope you still enjoy op!
-Fern🌿
Pairings: All Slashers x Reader
Warnings: NSFW
Slashers x Switch Reader
Michael Myers
Michael needs full control over his s/o, especially in the bedroom. Nothing is going to happen without his say so and he’s always going to be the more dominant one.
Occasionally though, he’ll let you ride him. That’s probably the most control that he’s ever going to give you.
Don’t ever attempt to dom him. It will only make him angry, then he’s going to have to remind you who’s in charge. Let’s just say if that happens you won’t be able to walk the next day.
If you refuse to submit to him, he’s not above restraining you so that you can’t put up a fight. After all, he’s so much larger than you it wouldn’t be difficult for him to pin you down and manhandle you.
Bo Sinclair
Bo craves control over every aspect of his life, especially his partner. So don’t expect to get much control in the bedroom with him either.
He would laugh if you mentioned wanting to dom him. Bo thinks it’s hilarious since he’s obviously the more dominant one in every aspect of your relationship.
However, further into your relationship you may be able to get him to relent occasionally. If you can manage to edge him long enough he’ll cave. All he’s focused on in that minute is chasing his release.
The next time after that expect him to be rougher than usual. His pride tells him he has to re-establish his roll as the dominant one.
Vincent Sinclair
At first Vincent would want control simply because he’s insecure. Having control in the beginning would make him feel more comfortable.
Once he’s more comfortable with you though, he’s more than okay with letting you take control. In fact he enjoys it!
This leads to the two of you switching roles quite often. It can also lead to some pretty rough sex when both of you are in the mood to be the dominant one.
Just don’t tease him about it though. If you do, he’ll feel insecure about it and it’ll make him draw back some.
Thomas Hewitt
Let’s be honest, he grew up with Hoyt and Monty as his only examples so he’s very traditional in a sense. He believes that the man is always supposed to be in charge, therefore thinking he always has to be the dominant one.
Luckily though Tommy is very open minded and is more than willing to let you take charge at least once. You just have to tell him it won’t make him any less of a man for doing so.
Would end up enjoying letting you dom more than he thought he would.
Enjoys letting you take charge after he’s had a rough day/week. It takes some of the pressure off of him.
Brahms Heelshire
He is also a switch! It entirely depends on his mindset at the time. He flips from being submissive and obedient to dominant and demanding.
Some days he wants nothing more than to let you take charge and have you tell him how good he is for you. We all know he has a praise kink.
Other days he wants nothing more than to have you beneath him, begging for more.
Brahms would be amazed by you in all honesty. Someone who enjoys switching up roles just as much as he does? Sign him up!
Billy Loomis
At first, Billy likes to pretend he’s nothing but dominant. His pride and ego get in the way of his thinking most of the time, you just have to be patient.
He’s more than okay with letting you dom him. But that’s only after the two of you have been together for awhile and he knows that his feelings for you aren’t going anywhere.
He also has to know that you’re not leaving him either. The poor thing has serious abandonment issues, please tell him how he can’t get run you off even if he wanted to, it’ll make him melt.
Still prefers being the dominant one most of the time though.
Stu Macher
Another switch! He’s totally fine with either role.
Stu is very focused on pleasing his partner, so he’s always down to let you decide the roles. He really doesn’t have a preference for either but if he had to choose he would say he enjoys being the dominant one more.
He likes to make you beg and say all kinds of filthy things. It always makes you blush and he absolutely loves it.
Prefers to be the dominant one whenever he’s having a rough time or arguing with Billy. If he’s having a rough time, it allows him to let off some steam. If he’s arguing with Billy it’s probably because Billy is being stubborn and he needs to feel like he has control over something.
Jesse Cromeans
Absolutely not, he’s the dominant one. He’s not budging on this one.
Well okay maybe just once. Having Jesse let you be the dominant one is a very rare occasion so you better savor the moment.
He doesn’t hate letting you be the dominant one, he just doesn’t enjoy it either. Always prefers to be the one in charge of things. Bugging him about it will only make him angry and shut you out so it’s best to leave it be.
Also has to trust you a lot before he ever even thinks about letting you dom him.
Asa Emory
Don’t ask to dom him if you’re interested in being alive.
Just no.
Thinks it’s cute that you’d ever even ask that but also incredibly stupid.
Do you think this is a joke?

His Queen Pt12
"Didn't expect your friend to run off like that did you?" Kah asks sat back on his pretend throne
"He's coming back, Ka-Ka-Ro. Sure as moon shines on a mongoose, he'll be here" Jed tells Kah
"I would save my breath if I were you. You don't have many left"
"Did I ever tell you how much I hate you?" I ask crossing my arms
"Thats because of my brother. He was soft, and so were you. He made me out to be the bad guy"
"You are"
"Oh come now, would a life with me have been so bad?"
"Yes" I scoff at him
"Why because I would have more than one wife? or because I would actually rule properly"
"Because I didn't and don't love you. Plus the others"
"Oh my dear Amunet, it's a good job you're here with me now. We can finally rule together and you shall be the queen you were supposed to be" Kah tries to move a piece of hair behind my ear, but I move away from his touch
"You will learn to love me"
"I'd rather die all over again" I mutter.
"Look a little nervous there, Ramen Noodle, 'cause for me, this is like a spa treatment. Sand baths are really rejuvenating for the skin. Exfoliates. Giving up yet?" Kah is tapping his leg up and down with nerves
"Not quite yet, no. In fact, let's see if we can't make time fly" Kah shakes the hourglass
"Kah stop please. You promised an hour so he should be given an hour. A good pharaoh should always honor his word"
"What is that funny sound?" the large window is then crashed into and something that resembles a plane comes crashing into the room
"Stop!" Kahmunrah yells "right there, please, Mr. Daley. Well. Well, well, well. You certainly know how to make an entrance, Mr. Daley. I hope for your
little friend's sake, here, that you also figured out the combination"
"Give me Jed and Amunet" Larry walks over to Kah as some guards grab hold of me
"Oh, no, no, no. First, give me the combination and hand over that tablet"
"I'll give you the tablet and the combination when you release my friends
and give them back to me"
"I shall release what I want to release
the moment I want to release it"
"Kah just give him or even me Jed" I shout getting irritated
"I'll release what I want to release at the exact moment that I want to release it, okay. Tell me the combination and give me that tablet right now or I shall kill hmmmm all of your friends, starting with the little shaggy-headed little cowman here"
"I ain't shaggy-headed. Gigantor, let me take this guy" Jed yells
"Don't worry, I got this handled. You don't want to give me my friends, then you're not gonna get your combination or your tablet"
"All right, I'll tell you what. They didn't call me Kahmunrah the Trustworthy for nothing" I roll my eyes at Kahs childish behaviour "here you go. They didn't call me Kahmunrah the Trustworthy. They called me Kahmunrah the Bloodthirsty, who kills whoever doesn't give Kahmunrah exactly what he wants in the moment that he wants it, which is right now, when I had also better get the combination and the tablet"
"That's what they called you?"
"No they called him Kahmunrah the weak" I laugh
"Oh shut up"
"You know the actual reason why Ahk became pharaoh and not him was because Kah couldn't hold his fathers staff"
"So I trained. Then my brother was weaker than me"
"I'm not sure about that. You had the muscle yes but not the brain. What's the saying Larry? the lights are on but no ones home" the guards hands tighten around my arms
"Amunet I swear I will not marry you if you don't stop talking" Kah snaps at me
"Oh that's the best thing I've heard all day" I sigh
"Ughhh guys still trapped in here"
"Sorry Jed. Look I'll give you
the combination after you give him back" Larry goes to take Jed from Kah
"How dare you. If you touch that again,
I shall kill you right now. Do not touch this. This is a no-touching zone"
"Good. Well, then..." Larry tried to take Jed again
"Oh, my God! I can't believe you reached across like that again. I can't even believe it. Oh, God, I want to kill you right... If you didn't know this combination,
you'd be so dead right now, it would be unbelievable" Kah really is acting like a child that is just having one huge tantrum
"Great, but I do know the combination"
"Don't cross this line with your hand!" Larry goes to take Jed once more "how dare you! If you speak again, I'm going to kill you. Do you understand this?
don't say it!" Larry tries to talk "oh, God, I see you getting ready"
"I wasn't gonna say anything" Larry shrugs. I'm not really sure what Larry is trying to do right now, but watching this is actually quite funny
"Oh, my God, don't say anything. I shall murder you if you talk again. Now give me that tablet and tell me the combination"
"Okay. After you give me Jed, Amunet and release my friends"
"You did all three. You spoke and you reached your hand across"
"Look. I can talk to you about this
all night, okay?"
"How about this? how about I don't kill you right now, like I really, really want to, and I give you precisely five seconds to give me that tablet and tell me the combination"
"We already got the combination. It's pi" Al Copone walks in with Napoleon, Ivan and the other guards. I sigh with sadness knowing that the underworld is now going to be released.

IMO, the Sandman show is anti-Black, perhaps inadvertently, when you look at who most of the dead minor characters are. I haven't seen a lot of talk about that, but it bothered me.
Also, what the hell is going on with Nada and why are people still stanning Dream after that? Horrible. What's in the canon is definitely a bigger problem than what fans are writing about (the only obvious ship bait, which is Dreamling). It's AO3, so a m/f ship with little chemistry is unlikely to be super popular, and Dream is the main character and one of the only characters to consistently appear on screen, so any popular ship will feature him, for better or worse.
your first point is a valid criticism. i, as again a non black poc, can't really judge whether or not it's anti-black, but i did have the same thought myself when watching for the first time. but i do think that sort of tapers off by the second half of the show. there were a lot of minor characters who were black and who died, but also a lot of characters who were black and had a lot of focus and didn't die, like lucienne, rosemary, rose, jed, and death. i don't think it's intentional, but it is a problem and something i hope they fix in the second season.
as for your second point, i do actually have to disagree. we are supposed to think that dream is a bad person, especially after nada. he's grouchy, mean, rude to lucienne, cold to rose, and comes off as arrogant and unfeeling a lot. he is a major fucking asshole. but the sandman (the show, at least, i haven't read the comics) is about him learning how to be a better person. he's not compassionate towards cain and abel after the loss of gregory- but he gives them the egg. he insults lucienne by insinuating that he can handle the work of the dreaming on his own- but he has to apologize, recognizes she was right, and by the end lets her do the administrative work of the dreaming. he's cold and cruel to rose, lyta, and hector after he gets what he wants- but after, he recognizes rose as a power in her own right, and allows her and unity to solve the problem their way. yes, he left nada in hell, but i have no doubt that if sandman is continued, they will address it, and he'll fix the situation and apologize. and i believe they do in fact address it in the comics! (again, haven't read them yet, so forgive me if i'm wrong)
there's a quote i'd like to add here from allan heinberg, one of the executive producers and showrunners of the show, about the making of it: "...The Sandman is an exploration of what it means to be human. To be mortal and therefore vulnerable. Capable of being hurt, but also capable of loving and being loved. The Sandman is the story of an honorable, arrogant king who slowly—very slowly—learns how to love. How to be a loving friend, a loving brother, a loving father." yes, dream is an asshole and a bad person for what he did to nada. but that's the great part about the sandman: we get to watch him have to choose, again and again, to be better.
#in a way the whole show is dream's redemption arc#sorry for going on this whole rant but i do love that cat T_T#asks#but thank you for sending this ask!#as a side note: as a pakistani-american i would like to see more asian characters next season (if we get one)#cain and abel and the three fates were all desi iirc which is super cool!!#but i want MORE lmao#sandman

Victim
Danny (jed Olsen) Johnson x reader
Summary: Jed has to live with his Mistake, and even though the mistake effects you it seems hes stuck with you.
Warning: blood, murder, swearing, reader is dead, idk i kinda got a little carried away with this.
I did use A fucking Tiktoc sound as inspiration for the first part what about it?
~~~~~
"Do you blame yourself?" You asked.
Your voice cutting through the static that seemed to fill Jeds mind, the way you tilted the tea kettle into your mug mimicked the exact way you tilted your head in the way you usually did when you were curious about something.
"What?" He gulped, his throat was dry.
"Do you Blame yourself?" You repeated, turning to face him this time.
"Blame myself? what are you talking about?"
"Well it's common for a person to feel...guilt in this type of situation."
He shook his head at you confused.
"What situation? Y/n you aren't making sense."
You blinked surprised at him.
"The accident,Jed." You nodded your head to the area in front of you just behind him.
"Shit."
"Oh c'mon, Don't act so supprised, Jed. You did this and you know it...but i guess Shock and denial were to be expected." You said bordly dragging your finger through the pool of red liquid that stained the hard wood, mindlessly drawing a pattern in it.
"This isn't funny...this is some type of sick dream…"
"Jed, we're smarter than to be acting like a scared little kid."
"We? You..your…"
"A figment of your imagination, kinda like a voice of reason you invented to help process your mistake." You smiled and pulled your finger from the pool and licked the blood from your finger.
"But let's face it, Danny." You spoke his name with pure harsh venom dripping from your words.
"All rational thinking left your pretty little head a long while ago, back when you killed those fucking assholes at work. And If you did still have any reasonable thought in there Then I wouldn't be here now, would I?"
The static feeling filled his head again, he couldn't focus on anything. "It's so sad too...you can't seem to recall anything from before can you?" You gave him a fake sympathetic frown. "Well Let me help jump start your memory, remember how I tried to fucking help you? How I told you I would never tell a soul about what you told me and how I promised we could work things out!? Remember that Jed? Cause I sure as Fucking Hell do! "
You Gulped at the photos that hung in the red room, those weren't photos from security cams or even from the reporters or investigators
Those were taken by the murdered, some even included the killer posing with the unrecognizable corpses.
How did your boyfriend get his hands on the photos taken by the killer himself?
Your eyes moved down to the desk and work space seeing the discarded mask haphazardly thrown on the desktop.
"Fuck-" you backed out of the room soaking everything in and bumping into someone.
"Hey, dollface."
You practically jumped across the room at your boyfriend's voice. "Shit! Jed, I'm so sorry. I came looking for you and-" he grabbed your wrist and pulled you out of the room slamming the door shut.
"I won't tell anyone!...I swear on my life!"
"Are you begging for your life right now, do you think I'm gonna kill you?"
You wanted to say yes, you firmly believed in that moment you would be his next victim, because according to every horror movie you've ever seen all logic said that was the next move.
Yet you carefully thought about the next words to leave your mouth. "No...No,Jed I don't think you're gonna kill me...I'm just letting you know where I stand with this whole situation…I know your a good person, I can help get rid of everything if you just..stopped. "
He got closer to you tilting your chin up to look at him. "Well that's good to know...but i've gotta say, it was kinda hot."
"What?"
"The whole begging thing." You chuckled and hit him. "Dumbass." You moved to go back to the kitchen but he stopped you. "Seriously, why aren't you trying to run away?"
You smiled. "You love me too much to kill me."
"I loved you too much, I wanted to help but you kept slipping further and further away from me I ended up being too scared to leave." You were playing with the blood stained knife, making small divots in the table.
"But I was just an object, an obstacle in the way of your obsession. You couldn't corrupt me, make me a plaything you could use in your murdering game. So you had to get rid of me."
He remember now, remember how he had snapped when you refused to play his way. The way you cried and begged for him to listen to you.
You moved so now you were behind him wrapping your arms around him and sighing deeply.
"Awe, Danny boy...You're gonna carry the weight of this guilt forever, you fucking asshole. And When you snap back to reality I hope it's hell to clean up my mess, I hope when you cut me up and toss me out. You cry and scream at yourself. Cause you fucking deserve it." You started laughing against him softly, then it got louder and you were laughing uncontrollably.
You grabbed his chin and made him stare at you. "You're stuck with me forever, I'll always be with you! It's sorta romantic when you think about it."
"Shut up! SHUT THE FUCK UP! and go away!" He shut his eyes and when it was silent he opened them.
He was left alone with you again, left with the blood stained corpse of you.
So let me get this straight. Alyssa,Cleo, Finch, Kaleb somewhat and now Jed are all getting/got a backstory(maybe other characters as well and I just forgot) before Landon? Are you kidding me?! You know what I'm not even surprised. At this point I'll settle for any little thing we don't already know about Landon and I mean anything. Rather it's his birthday or the very first place went in the PW. Or the first time he saw/met Hope(okay that last one is just the Handon shipper in me). SOMETHING! Bc this is just ridiculous we're on s4 and we still know next to nothing about our male lead. I mean really how did we get backstories for two characters who just showed up before our lead or even any other character who's been there since s1. I just can't with this disrespect.
Yeah, exactly. I can’t with this show. It’s absurd. I don’t mind learning about the other characters, but it’s like they’re doing everything they can to avoid telling us anything about Landon. More details about his life before he came to the school, his time in the prison world, they won’t give us anything. It’s feels like a joke. We should know the most about him at this point when he’s the second lead of the show, after Hope. I really want to know his birthday too, but maybe if they told us, they’d have to acknowledge how old he is and then they’d have a time limit for how long Landon can be trapped at the school. (They don’t want us to know that Landon is going on 20, and might be already, and that he should have left the school long ago.) And I’ve been wanting to see his and Hope’s first meeting for so long but it seems like we’re never gonna get it. And I’ve also been waiting to know all about his time in the prison world for how many months now and they’re acting as if it never happened. It’s so frustrating. I can’t believe we’re this far into the show and they still won’t focus on Landon himself, yet they have with these other new characters? The disrespect is endless it seems. I truly don’t understand the writing choices.
Rowing the Rarepair Rowboat: Josie Saltzman x Jed Tien (Legacies)
Requested by anonymous
Josie's laughing. She has been for nearly the last half hour, no matter how serious she keeps trying to be.
"No, no — that's not what it says!" she says, trying to sound stern but only laughing more as Jed continues purposefully messing up the script. She reaches to take it back from him. "Stefan would never say that!"
"It's creative freedom," Jed argues, grinning. His voice only grows more amused as he stretches his arm up further with the script, knowing that she can't reach it but delighting in watching her try. Those stupid four inches of height really do make a difference even sitting down. "Landon took creative freedom just writing this whole thing, so why can't we?"
Josie puffs out a breath, momentarily pausing her attempts. "Because — Landon kept as close to the facts as he could through history books and talking with my uncle Damon, but you—“
She lunges for the script, thinking his guard will be lowered enough for her victory. But Jed has the reflexes of a wolf and immediately stretches his arm higher, switching the script over to his right hand to add even more of an obstacle, and leaving her hands to lunge pointlessly at his wrist. Jed laughs and it's impossible for Josie not to as well, even through her groaning and slumping in defeat.
"—you're just making things up!" she finishes with another huff.
"You don't know that!" Jed insists, his eyes shining with joy at their playful bickering. "Here, listen, I feel like I can really capture Stefan's inner monolouge." He clears his throat theatrically and Josie rolls her eyes even as she bites the inside of her cheek to keep her smile from straying too far at the serious, brooding look he puts on. "I'm so conflicted. Should I tell Elena that I'm a vampire, or should I cover myself in glitter and go out in the sun in front of her in the hopes that she'll catch on?"
"Oh my god, sto-o-op!" Josie exclaims, bursting into laughter again and throwing her head back. "You sound like Uncle Damon!"
"I'm mocking Damon," Jed counters, his mock seriousness cracking to let his grin shine through as he slips back into his dramatic speech, standing up. Josie's eyes widen and she follows him, back to actively trying to retrieve the script from him. "What if she would prefer a sparkling boyfriend? Will I have to lie and tell her Twilight was real for the rest of our lives together?"
"I think she would notice you were lying when you run out of — glitter!" Josie makes another failed lunge for the script. She jumps for it, but Jed quickly switches hands again. "Or when she becomes a vampire as well and realizes that she burns just trying to open the curtains."
Jed hums and nods as if in genuine deep thought, all while still walking backwards and ensuring the script is out of her reach. She's not really trying to get it back anymore. More just making halfhearted lunges for it, only succeeding in grabbing at his arms instead.
"You make a good point," he concedes. "Maybe she'd be willing to settle for me in all of my non-sparkliness." A mischievious glint brightens in his eyes as he looks at Josie and plasters on that brooding look again. "Elena. I'm sorry I don't sparkle."
Josie rolls her eyes. "Are we really doing this?"
Jed raises an eyebrow and gives her a look that says, we are if you play along. And, okay, they have some time to spare for rehearsal. Landon probably won't need them for another half hour while he's going over Lizzie's scenes as their mom and Cleo as Aunt Bonnie. They're having some trouble getting their last duet number done, the one before the wedding after Stefan killed Enzo. It's a whole thing.
So, playing along could be fun.
"You lied to me, Stefan," Josie says, putting on her best impression of her aunt Elena. She tries not to think about how much trouble she would be in for this with her. "You told me it was all real. Was it all just an act? Are you even really allergic to garlic?"
The last part nearly makes Jed crack up on the spot, having to press his lips together. After a calm beat, he gets back into character — or at least the caricatures of them — and looks at Josie with wide eyes, pleading with her.
"I..." He turns his head away dramatically, and in a whisper, says, "No. I'm not."
Josie scoffs and takes a step back as if scandalized. Disgusted.
"Our entire relationship is a lie!" she accuses, a hand on her chest. "Did you plan on running into me that day outside the bathroom? Was this whole thing just some... some twisted, manipulation?"
"No!" Jed steps towards her, hands outstretched to reach for hers, but Josie holds one up in front of her, stopping him short. "No, it was nothing like that. Yes, I — I maybe did run into you on purpose that day, but it's because I already knew how much I cared about you. And when we did meet, those feelings for you only grew stronger."
They are partially taking words from the script, Josie acknowledges, only saying them instead of singing them, and it's only bits here and there. The rest is entirely improvised on the spot, and Josie will admit, she's kind of impressed by how well he's nailing this. She knew he was really excited about getting to play Stefan but she hadn't really thought he put that much thought into it beyond... well, showing off like a lot of the others who auditioned.
"But how can I know that you're telling the truth?" Josie says, shaking her head sadly. She gingerly reaches for the pendant around her neck, fingering it gently as she glances down at it. "You could have gotten in my head without me knowing about it."
"I would never do that to you," Jed insists firmly, trying to catch and hold onto her gaze. "That necklace protects you from any vampire's mind compulsion. I gave it to you to protect you."
"From you?" Josie snaps, her head shooting up and her chin jutting out with a glare.
A mistake, because it gives Jed the perfect opportunity to keep her eyes locked on his. Once they're there, focused on his wide, sad eyes — they're not as dark in this lighting and up this close, they're kind of like a shimmering brown, little lighter brown specks flickering like sparks off of a spell against the darker brown — she can't look away. She's too caught up in it.
"Yes," Jed agrees softly. "From me as well. So you would know, when this moment finally came, that I would never dream of doing anything to hurt you. Not on purpose." He sighs. "You don't have to trust me, Elena, but please believe that I'm telling the truth when I tell you that everything else was real, including... especially my feelings for you."
"How can you be so sure, Stefan?" Josie asks. "How -- how do you know yourself that what you feel for me is real and not just some way for you to hold on to your past?" She steels her stare as best she can, setting her jaw. "To Katherine?"
"Because what I feel for you is beyond anything I ever felt for Katherine," Jed swoops right in, saying the right words in the right voice.
He steps forward and she doesn't back away this time, but tilts her head up, keeping her ground. Then, with perfect calculation, and as smooth as if he does this all the time, he reaches out and rests a hand on either side of her neck, thumbs just barely brushing her jaw. When she says she freezes like a statue, she means it save for the shiver that runs from where his palms are touching her skin, down her spine and up the back of her neck.
"You and her… you're nothing alike," Jed says, softening his voice like melted butter, and Josie swears she's not just staring at him with her mouth open in awe, but she also can't be sure. "You share an appearance, but when I look at you... you're all I see. No one else. Because your heart is what make you who you are, and your soul. And those are things I can feel and see, and they're the reason that I fell in love with you. Because of who you are, the way you think, the way you love and feel so passionately."
He slips a hand up to lightly brush away a stray lock of her hair. His eyes follow his own fingers to tuck it behind her ear. Josie tries to recall if werewolves have heightened hearing because her heart may be turning into a ticking time bomb and she's not too sure why, but something is telling her no one else should be allowed to hear it.
"That's why I love you," Jed repeats, reconnecting with her gaze. "Even if you may never believe that."
This is her cue, a little voice reminds her, suddenly striking an alarm bell that reverberates through her mind and kicks her out of her staring —gazing, it was definitely gazing, Lizzie would call it gazing, for sure.
"I believe you," she breathes out.
Jed blinks in surprise, then a soft smile takes its place. Josie returns it.
Then the Lizzie voice echoes back through her mind, saying, this is the part in the play where you kiss. And that thought absolutely terrifies Josie, because — what? They were just joking around, but it's occuring to her now that come show night, they will be doing this again, for real, and yes, there will be a kiss. A very scripted kiss. No spontaniety.
"Even..." she continues quietly, kicking the train of thought off its tracks and diverting down a safer route, "... if I'm disappointed that you don't sparkle. I was looking forward to having a disco ball for a boyfriend."
It successfully breaks Jed out of character; he laughs and has to look away. Josie almost breathes a sigh of relief with the connection broken. It was like a spell had come over her. She just laughs with him, her shoulders easing down a little from where they had hunched with frozen tension.
Before either of them can speak again, there's an outburst of applause from the doorway. Josie's and Jed's eyes widen as they both quickly look over to find Landon, Lizzie, and Cleo standing there. All three are clapping and wearing bright smiles; Landon's eyes are wide and... in awe, his expression like an excited puppy; Cleo is simply smiling, but there's something in her eyes that dances around the knowing expression; and Lizzie has never looked so smug in her life.
The two of them break apart, Jed quickly pulling his hands back to him then hastily stuffing them in his pockets. Josie fiddles with the pendant around her neck and tries to avoid looking at anyone as her cheeks flush hot and probably red.
"That... was amazing!" Landon is saying, marching right over to them with purpose that gives Josie great anxiety. "You two — oh my god, the chemistry? You have nailed the roles of Stefan and Elena, I mean" —he's looking between them with those wide eyes of disbelief, shaking his head— “if I didn't know better watching that, I would have sworn it was real! You were obviously the perfect choices for this."
Josie's face only flushes harder, more furiously at that comment. She chuckles nervously, and it ends too quickly. When she glances up at Lizzie, she finds exactly the expression she was anticipating. The knowing side-eye, the smirk, the slightly tilted head that says she is definitely getting involved in this. That's going to be a fun conversation.
Meanwhile, Jed rubs his neck sheepishly and tries not to appear too flustered under the many pairs of eyes. "Thanks! Uh, yeah, we were just... practicising. We went a little off-script, sorry about that. Just wanted to get a feel of the characters."
"Oh yeah, I don't doubt you wanted a feel of the characters," Lizzie emphasizes to Josie's mortification. She ignores her do you have to?! look of alarm and crosses her arms. "But... I agree with Landon."
"Yes, you two were incredible," Cleo chimes in, and Josie manages a small smile of thanks back at her when she catches her eyes. "I don't know this Stefan or Elena but with you two playing them, I feel like I do."
Josie's rubbing at her neck now, trying to keep her smile in place as she nods. "Thanks. So, uh, are you guys done rehearsing?"
The quick change in subject does not go unnoticed by either of the girls. Or Jed, who slides her a glance that adamantly avoids catching. Only Landon, who deflates a little but doesn't entirely lose the strangely upbeat thing he has going on at the moment.
"Sort of. For now. We're taking a break," he says. "We've got most of the number down. It's just this bit towards the end, but it'll be all fine. You guys just keep rehearsing — all of you!"
He points a finger at each of them in turn as he starts to back away. Josie's beginning to think his upbeat thing is more of a nervous breakdown thing the more she sees him. It's like he's becoming more and more unravelled with every rehearsal. Understandable, she thinks quietly to herself, it's not exactly easy.
As he leaves the gym, Lizzie turns an arched eyebrow on them. "So, should we leave the two of you to continue rehearsing or—“
"Actually, I have Chemistry — I mean—“ Josie hasn't wished Malivore to swallow her whole so much in her life "—I have class. So, uh..." She turns to face Jed for the first time since they were interrupted and shoots him a smile, asking, "Later? We can, uh, pick back up from... pa-page twenty-three?"
Jed nods, maybe a little too vigorous and frantic. "Yeah, of course!"
"Okay! Good." Josie swings right around, saying, "Bye!" then marches straight towards the door and out of the gym before anyone can stop her.
