Samhain: The Ancient Celtic Origins of Halloween

Halloween is one of the most important days of the year among many Wiccan and goth communities. It is also a fun mainstream holiday that kids with a sweet tooth look forward to all year!

Halloween is based on an ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the start of the cold and dark winter months. The supernatural was thought to be more potent during this darker half of the year, and rituals conducted at Samhain would protect the community over the coming months.

Many modern Halloween practices draw on the traditional rituals conducted around Samhain, brought to the United States by Irish and Scottish immigrants. But let’s take a closer look at the traditional Samhain festival.

Gaelic Festival of the Harvest

Samhain belongs principally to the Gaelic world. It was an important festival day in Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man. It was held annually on 1 November, which meant celebrations started during the evening on 31 October since the Celtic day began at sunset.

While Samhain was best associated with the Irish world, similar festivals were conducted around the same time of year by other Celtic communities. In Wales, it was known as Calan Gaeal, in Cornwall as Kalan Gwav, and in Brittany as Kalan Goanv.

It is no surprise that this date was considered important by many different communities. It is halfway between the Autumn equinox and the Winter solstice, which, in the northern hemisphere, is when the days start to get shorter and colder. This was extremely significant in many parts of the world, such as northern Europe, where the sun barely rises in the height of winter. The Norse people living in Scandinavia also marked this important moment in the Wheel of the Year with a different festival known as Alfablot.

Ancient Festival

There is good evidence that Samhain was an ancient festival. Several Neolithic passage tombs found in Ireland are aligned with the rising sun on Samhain, suggesting that the date was already marked out as important. A first-century BCE calendar, known as the Gaulish Coligny Calendar, calls this time of year Samoni.

The earliest clear evidence for Samhain as we know it today comes from the earliest examples of Irish literature, which date to the 9th century. Ireland was already Christianized by this time, so the traditions and practices described are a mix of old Pagan customs and Christian overlays and influences.

There is some evidence to suggest that the Pagan festival of Samhain was associated with the god Chrom Cruach, who seems to have been both a solar and a fertility deity. He is a wizened god hidden by mists who accepts “firstborn” sacrifices in exchange for good harvests.

While firstborn sacrifices were probably, in many cases, first harvests, there is also evidence that Chrom Cruach received human sacrifice. But rather than babies, he seems to have received kings. It is suspected that several Irish bog burials represent the ritual sacrifice of kings or other important persons. There is good evidence that many of them were interred around the time of Samhain.

Samhain Gatherings

By the 9th century, Samhain was a time of festival and celebration. Communities would gather in large groups to eat, drink, and be merry for about a week around the specific dates of Samhain. This meant that Samhain also had political importance as it was a time to reaffirm bonds with neighbors and allies, and leaders could confirm and pass rules and laws.

Many of the stories of Irish literature are set during Samhain as this is a time when people came together for festivities, marriages, and also conflict.

With the community gathered, the practice of mumming or guising, the root of trick-or-treating, was practiced. People would dress up in masked costumes to hide their identities and go from place to place dancing and reciting verses in exchange for food. Traditions around hospitality and welcoming guests meant that denying these passersby food could bring bad luck and perhaps also a trick from the disappointed players.

Day of the Dead

Samhain and also Beltane, which falls on May 1 when the days start to get longer, are considered liminal moments. At these times, the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest, and there is more interaction between the mortal and the supernatural. Ghosts, fairies, and demons are considered to be more powerful when the sun is weak, so Samhain marks the beginning of a dangerous period in general. The festival is a portal moment when forces can easily move between worlds.

In Irish literature, there are many stories of deceased ancestors returning to see their homes at Samhain (and they aren’t always happy with what they see!). More dangerous entities can also pass between the worlds, killing livestock and burning down homes if they so choose.

For this reason, Samhain rituals were often conducted at burial mounds, which were considered portals to the other world. Protective bonfires were built, and sacrifices were made to appease the spirits, called collectively the Aos Si. When people returned home, they would take a spark from the ritual bonfire to light their own hearth and lay out an extra plate for the honored ancestors.

Divination

The thin veil between the world meant that this was also the perfect time for divination practices. For example, stones were often cast into the bonfire during the festivities, and then an experienced diviner could read the future based on their positioning and burning.

Back at home, families would also engage in fun divination practices, often using apples and hazelnuts, both associated with the practice.

Games such as bobbing for apples could reveal whether a person would marry or have children in the coming months. People would also peel an apple in a single long strand while asking a question. They would then throw the peel over a shoulder, and the shape of the peel could provide an answer.

Two hazelnuts were named for an individual and their heart’s desire and then placed on the fire to roast. If the hazelnuts jumped away from the fire, this was not a good sign for the match. But if the two roasted quietly side by side, this was a good omen.

Witches of Samhain

In modern Paganism and Wicca, Samhain has been adopted as one of the principal Sabbats of the Wheel of the Year. While practices vary, these modern festivals are also based on the belief that this is a moment when the veil between the worlds is thin, so this is the ideal time to engage with our ancestors and the supernatural.

It also seems that Samhain has long been the domain of witches. One of the principal sites in Ireland where Samhain bonfires were built and rituals conducted is known as the Hill of Ward, which is the burial mound for Tlachtga.

Tlachtga was the daughter of the Arch Druid Mug Ruith, and she traveled with her father, learning his secrets and becoming an accomplished witch. She was reportedly raped by the sorcerer Simon Magus and, as a result, gave birth to three sons on this very mound, where she also died.

The resting place of the powerful witch was clearly considered a potent portal during the time of Samhain.

Some believe that Tlachtga only became a witch in Christian sources and, before this, was a Pagan sun goddess. This would also make her an appropriate goddess for Samhain, alongside the sun dog Crom Cruach.

It is not hard to see the roots of modern Halloween practices in many of the rituals and activities associated with the ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain. But for most people, Halloween has lost its spiritual meaning and is just some good fun.

But there is a growing group of Neopagans and individuals who just want to connect more with the natural cycles of the year that are reviving traditional Samhain practices.

An AU Idea I had

So I have heard from some people that if friendships last more than 7 (or 10 - I forget which), it lasts a lifetime.

The Marauders met on the 1st of September, 1971. While it is difficult to say whether they became friends instantly (like James and Sirius did, but I am not sure about the other two) or not. But it is safe to say that they did cross the 7 year mark right after they left for Hogwarts. (And assuming they became friends instantly, September of 1981 would have been their 10 year anniversary.)

So let's take the wizarding world. The whole friendship for a lifetime thing. Love and friendship are important themes in the Harry Potter saga, so let's take it a bit further. If you have been friends with someone for a certain period of time, you are bound to be their friend for a lifetime. You can choose the number - either 7 (the number with the most magical significance in the series) or 10 (a special number, which feels more significant when specifying the length of time spend together)

With 10:

For the 10 year friendship thing, I figured that they'd have to be friends instantly for their 10 year anniversary to fall before James dies. Now this gives us a period of 2 months - all of September + most of October (or even all). Let us consider 31st October to be the actual date their friendship started (like Harry, Ron and Hermione)

For the 10 year thing, idk I just figured Peter is really content with being friends with them. He still does spy, but he tries not to let his friends be the ones in danger. (The list eventually also includes Lily and Harry.)

Until the prophecy.

Until Harry Potter is Voldemort's newest target, and there is no way Peter can convince James to just hand over Harry. Peter knows, that James would die for Harry, if it came down to it. But it's okay, he figures. They'll go into hiding. He just doesn't have to know where, so Voldemort wouldn't find out either.

Enter Sirius and the brilliant plan.

Exit James and Lily.

Wait, wait, a whole bunch of stuff happens in between.

Peter doesn't want to betray his friends, not really. He doesn't want James, Lily and Harry to be in danger, because he does love them. But he loves living more.

So, when he becomes the Secret Keeper, and Voldemort asks him for the Potters' location, he gives it. Belatedly, he remembers, that their 10 year anniversary is coming up. That it is tomorrow - Halloween. If James dies on Halloween, the 10 year pact wouldn't really have kicked in, per say. Peter would be fine. He hopes.

He prays that James and Lily just let Harry die - atleast they'd survive. But he doesn't dare ask Voldemort that.

Now we're back to the 'Exit James and Lily' part.

But of course, the bond doesn't kick in - not really, not until the 31st of October is over. Somehow, Peter ends up cursed anyway.

Sirius Black confronts Peter on the 1st of November, 1981. Hours after the 10 year anniversary of their friendship. Peter betrays Sirius. Peter blows up the street. Sirius goes to Azkaban. Peter ends up cursed.

James seems to haunt Peter - a ghost only he can see. Keeps haunting him, keeps guilt tripping him, keeps blaming him, and most of all, keeps wanting to be with his son. It drives Peter crazy. He is unable to do anything about it because as far as anyone else is concerned, he is dead. So if he makes a reappearance to get help, he is dead. And he is worried that if he stays like this, he will kill himself.

(Ofc James is not really there. James cannot be forced to spend the rest of his existence haunting Peter. James is wherever dead people are - not with the living. Peter's magic, having bonded with the other 3, seems to be going against him for what he did to them. James is just the only one who could reasonably haunt Peter, so his magic (or head) conjures up images of James.)

(Or it could go a different way. Maybe they become friends on Sirius' birthday. Maybe Peter had James killed and framed Sirius right before their 10 year anniversary so he wouldn't be bound by the promise of a friendship lasting a lifetime (it did last a lifetime for James). Maybe Peter planned out the day. Maybe.)

With 7:

The same story really. Except, in this case Sirius is also haunted by 'James'. Yes, yes, I know Sirius did not betray James. But Sirius thinks he was (atleast partially) responsible for James' death. That guilt is enough to convince his magic that he broke the friendship pact.

The dementors ........................... do not help.

How Medic Had VHS Tapes Before They Were Allegedly Invented

Emesis Blue, the psychological horror film based off of the hit first-person shooter game, Team Fortress 2, created by the studio Valve, is by all accounts an odd and unexpected masterpiece of film. Though most are set on explaining various time loops and the ending, I am not. Regardless of the fact that I understood neither of those things, I have arrived with a theory of my own. Because I have spiralled into a chaotic mode of over-analysis, specifically over a scene which is, at best, five seconds long. Should you choose to follow me and indulge in my delusions, I can guarantee you that I have something that may not interest you, but is long and heavily interests me.

PART I: WHY AM I LIKE THIS?

I’m literally neurodivergent and a minor. I have no answers for you. Moving on.

PART II: HOW COULD MEDIC HAVE VHS BEFORE IT EXISTED?

The point of this over analytical essay is to discuss why the Medic, also known as Doctor Fritz Ludwig, would have access to VHS tapes in a time when they did not in fact exist at all. The film is set on halloween--October 31, 1968. VHS tapes were not widely available to the public until 1976, and it is said that the development of VHS began sometime in 1969. Neither of these facts account for Medic’s possession of them. So where did he get them from?

We can begin by breaking down what they are and who made them.

These two images clearly display some of the VHS tapes which fell out of the box during the first couple of scenes of Emesis Blue. They are labelled “das grinsende gesicht” and “der könig in gelb.” These translate to “The Grinning Face” and “The King in Yellow,” both of which are pieces of media. The former is a silent German horror film released in 1929, and the latter appears to be the German translation of the title of a collection of short stories written by Robert W. Chambers. The title is also the title of a play within the collection which is said to drive anyone who reads it mad. However, the latter was never made into film. This information, while interesting, is not really important to my theory. But now you know. There’s symbolism to it of course.

Now, these tapes are clearly marked with the Mann Co. logo. This infers that they are produced and distributed by Mann Co. Considering their involvement in covert operations, projects, and their possible or perhaps even outright government connections, it is possible that Mann Co. invented or at least had production access to VHS before anyone knew about it. Perhaps they had a reason for holding them back? The box in his office is full, but it is not the

largest collection it could be, and it appears to be a mix of both legitimate or pseudo-legitimate films and personal or corporate videos. Considering the fact that VHS tapes are only seen in Ludwig’s possession, and that they contain the Mann Co. logo, it is safe to assume that they are produced by Mann Co. and solely distributed to those employed by them.

This offers a simple explanation as to why Medic has them before they should have existed. Mann Co. is not known for their transparency, often keeping things secret, even things that would objectively change the world. However, this does not offer an explanation as to what happened that led to the public release of VHS afterwards. So this brings us to our next section….

PART III: HOW AND WHY DID VHS BECOME WIDESPREAD?

It is said that production and development of the VHS began in 1969. Over the course of Emesis Blue, the Mann brothers, Redmon and Blutarch, are murdered. This occurs sometime in early November 1968--likely specifically November 3, as the agent who debriefs Soldier at the end of Emesis Blue--Agent Stemmons--mentions to him that the funeral of Governor Archibald is on Sunday. Assuming that this debriefing takes place directly after the events of halloween 1968, which fell on a Thursday, that leaves November 3 as the most likely date.

Seeing as the Mann brothers are now dead, and as there is no mention of Gray Mann interfering with the rest of this plot, it’s possible that Mann Co. is now disbanded, leaving them no means by which to distribute this technology. It’s then highly possible that the sole survivor of the Conagher slaughterhouse, Soldier, also known as Jane Doe, is the one who brought VHS to the world. While it is also possible that Gray could have done it, we’ll assume he doesn’t even exist in this universe, as his role is noncritical to it,

Here is how Jane could have single handedly brought VHS to the rest of the world.

Scarred by the events of October 31, 1968, he decided that the VHS tapes invented by Mann Co were actually a useful invention, and that the public should have access to them. After the death of the Mann brothers he tried to spread them and rebrand them, but quickly learned that they had some form of mind control within. This led to him bringing some of the tapes to a group who could disable this feature. Bones' 2023 Halloween Event 🎃

Goblins, ghouls, and sheet ghosts, it’s that time of the year again, Halloween. We’re talking too much glitter, unsettlingly realistic makeup, and even fake teeth; there’s the perfect costume for everyone. Put on a mask or even ditch the shirt for the night, but what better way to celebrate Halloween than with a couple's costume! Have you ever wondered what costume you and your favorite character would wear together? Well, I'm here to help, with this very infomercial-sounding event intro! 

This event is open from now (28 September) and ends 20 October. I want to ensure that I have enough time to get everything done so that everything will be ready to post the weekend before Halloween! 

This is a selfship-based event which means for this event, you get to choose the character your post is about! In return for joining this event, you’ll get what costume I think would fit you and your character, a photo or two of the costumes, some runner-up costume ideas, how I think your character would come up with the idea for your costumes, and a few extra hcs about the costumes.

Tell me a bit about how you dress, specifically; do you tend to dress feminine, or masculine, do you not care, do you dress androgynously, somewhere between masc & fem in a genderless way that keeps people guessing? Or is there any particular way you’re not comfortable dressing? Is modesty important to you? Seems silly, but I want to make sure I don't recommend costumes that might make you uncomfy or give you dysphoria/dysmorphia.

October, one of the favorite months of the people, including you, because all the fun that included like decorating houses, finding the right costume for threat or tricking or parties, tasting the seasonal drinks or food for different establishments offered, feeling the autumn breeze and the leafs become orange and fall from the trees, watching scary or Halloween themed movies, pumpkin patches, scary houses and festivals, among other stuff

This was also the month (along with your birthday and december) were you got the most PR packages for multiple brands, this year you recieved the entire Ghostface x Glamlite collection, various products from Hot Topic, clothes from the Killstar x Carrie collaboration, a Chamberlain Coffee fall mistery box, even Tatum recieved some things from Petco

"Congratulations, you're famous", you said to Tatum after openning the package seeing her explore the witch hat bed

And that was only the first week of october

However, this year you'll be spending your weeks differently thanks to the fact that your dad got you a job at Halloween Horror Nights to keep practicing your VFX make up skills, which started since early days of september, while the industry returned to normality getting better deals for the actors

And thanks to your contract ending at the end of the third week of october, you got to rest and focus on Scott's Halloween party

"Get in lovers, we're going shopping!", you exclaimed the moment you stopped in front of the Champion house where Jack, Willa and Romeo were waiting for you in the front porch

"Hi", Jack smiled leaning through the open window of your seat

"Hi", you smiled back taking one of his cheeks with your hand to get him closer to your face and share a small kiss to not incomodate the others

"Don't tell me you got a car", Willa said sitting in the passenger seat next to you, while the boys ended up in the backseat

"No, it's dad's", you responded driving again, "He went golfing with Jakob so he let me use it for the day"

"Nice", Romeo nodded, "How was Halloween Horror Nights?"

"If you think it's cool from the outside, it's amazing from the inside", you responded smiling, "Like, being part of the process of helping to do the looks, helping bring them to life it's incredible, and also learning a lot from all those incredible artists"

"Sounds awesome", Romeo commented, "Did you take photos or videos?"

"I did, I'm going to upload them to Tik Tok and Instagram later"

"Hey, changing the theme a little", Willa said, "I know we've known each other for more than a year but I didn't ask this because there wasn't too much familiarity, but, did your dad and Lucy Hale actually date?"

"Definately", you nodded, "It was only for a few months but they did, she is awesome, and it's funny because a few years before I was watching Pretty Little Liars and Truth or Dare, and then in the middle of quarantine, I woke up and she is in the kitchen having breakfast"

"That's crazy", Willa commented

"I know, and even though they broke up I still talk to her sometimes, well, more like I talk to all dad exes sometimes, mostly congratulate each other on birthdays or festivities, but of course more to my mom because, well, she's my mom"

Before Willa or the boys could comment something, from the playlist you put for the ride on shuffle, it sounded the first words of AMERICA HAS A PROBLEM from Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar, causing you to re-start the song

"America, America has a problem", the four of you said together before the music started to sound

During the rest of the ride, the car was filled with sing-along and performance from the songs until the way ended when you spotted a space in the parking of Spirit Halloween

Stepping out of the car, the four of you started to walk towards the entrance noticing there wasn't too manny people, even if it was close to Halloween

"So, who are you going as?", Willa asked, "We know your friend gave us Barbie and he gave you Scream, but we don't how how are you going to do it"

"Sidney and Billy", Jack answered

"Gender swaped", you completed while entering the store

"I was going to do a Freud joke before you specified that", Romeo said

"Understandable", you shrudded, "I mean, Scott told us to be creative, so we did it"

"Giving everyone a different theme was clever", Romeo commented

"He said he didn't want anyone repeating costume so gave us themes", Jack explained

"We also decided to do something different for our costumes", Willa said, "Since everyone is going to do the most popular ones like the cowboy, disco, roller skate and that, we decided to use the outfits they use to deprogram the Barbies from the patriarchy"

"We're going as Allan and Barbie",

"That is an amazing idea", you commented

Going first to the Barbie section of the store where Willa and Romeo got their costumes and some other accesories (he got to buy his in the extra large size due not being that costume for men), the shopping continue exploring the rest of the store and the different options to costumes, accesories, decorations, toys, which ended up in grabbing some things that none of you needed for your costumes but were liked enough to buy it, playing with some of the fake weapons, wigs and accesories, teasing Jack a bit because of the Avatar stuff, before reaching the Scream section

"The bling knife!", you exclaimed taking it noticing it was the last one

Watching the rest of the aisle, you also took the ghostface crossbody bag, the plushie, and the bling mask, while Jack took the metallic mask for himself

"You don't need fake blood?", Willa asked while walking to the cash register

"I have it at home", you responded, "Like five bottles of 2 litters each"

"Tell them about Carrie The Musical", Jack smiled

"Oh my God", you laughed, "Okay, for context, my school always does a small Halloween carnival for the students, parents, teachers and that, so the october before the pandemic we did Carrie The Musical, and I auditioned and got the role of Chris Hargensen, so we started rehearsing and preparing the sets, the utilery and that, and when the director asked me to bring the fake blood for the prom scene, I think she expected me to bring a small bottle for the face he did when I pull out a gallon of fake blood out of my backpack"

"Where did you get a gallon of fake blood so easily?", Romeo laughed

"From the set of Riverdale", you responded, "It was during the weeks were dad would be on set all week and returned on the weekends to be with us, I told him I needed to get some fake blood, but like in buy it that weekend, and then he's getting the gallon out of of his travel bag"

Paying for all of the stuff you choose, the four of you left the store to go have lunch in Olive Garden (which ended up in ordering the Never Ending Pasta), before returning to your place to work on the fake blood for the costumes, noticing your brother's car was on the entrance which meant that they were back from their golf day

"Dad! We're home!", you exclaimed leaving the car keys on the small bowl on the entry before walking to the kitchen stopping for a small moment on the living room, "Why are you having a glare war with my cat?"

"Hey tornado, and other tornados", Jakob greeted standing in front of the flower cat tower, "Tatum hates me, we arrived like half an a hour ago, when dad approached her, she was all lovely and sweet, then she sees me and she's like a giant tiger in the body of a small furr ball"

"Skxawng", you said to him getting closer to hold Tatum in your arms, at what the orange kitten snuggle in your chest to play with your initial necklace, "She doesn't hate you, she just doesn't see you enough"

"Seriously?", Jakob raised an eyebrow, "Willa, Romeo, can you help me prove a point here? Can both of you hold Tatum, please?"

Smiling with fun, both of them held Tatum who was happy for the attention she was having

"See!", Jakob exclaimed watching how Jack was now holding the orange cat, "Tatum hates me"

"Jakob, let your sister alone", Skeet warned from the kitchen, which made everyone go there, "Hey kids, how was shopping?"

"Good, we found everything we needed", you responded leaving your bag in one of the high chairs and approach the fridge to get something to drink for the four of you

"That's nice", Skeet nodded, "By this dates Spirit Halloween or any stores like that are empty of stuff, did you ate?"

"Yeah, we stopped at Olive Garden to have lunch", Willa responded while you returned and started giving them the drinks

"Yeah, all of you shared the Never Ending Pasta", Jakob said looking at his phone causing to all of you to look at him weirdly, "I just saw it on Deuxmoi, someone took a photo"

"The word privacy doesn't exist for them", Romeo commented watching the photo

"At least they didn't took it while we were eating", Jack pointed

"That's the only good part", you shrudded, "Hey dad, we're going to my room to keep working on our costumes"

"Have fun", Skeet nodded while the fur of you along with Tatum started to go upstairs, "Tornado, two packages arrived for you"

"Two?", you exclaimed stopping to look at your dad, "Just today?"

"Yeah, we left them in your room", Skeet answered

"And they were heavy", Jakob completed, "Enjoy the unboxing"

Continuing to go upstairs, the four of you walked through the hall until you entered your room noticing the two boxes stacked on top of another under your ghostface masks

"I think this is the year were I'm getting the more PR stuff", you sighed, "Before we work in our costumes I need to see what I got and when to upload them"

"That's okay", Jack nodded letting Tatum go, who inmediatly went to her window hammock, to hug you and kiss you on the forehead, "We can wait"

"And we want to be part of the unboxing", Willa added leaving her shopping bag in your vanity chair

While they helped you to get the two boxes in the carpet in front of your bed (which was your usual spot for filming), you went to the night stands to get your light ring and your cutter before returning to sit with your back against the bed where the rest were already sat in the carpet

"Why does this feel like we're about to do the 'light as a feather, stiff as a board' thing'?", Romeo commented

That comment was enough to make the four of you burst in laughs

"This is extremely accurate", Jack laughed

"The best part is that one of the actors of The Craft is downstairs", you joked increasing the laughs

Once the laughing finished, you finally started to open the boxes, starting with the one in front of you

"It's the Scooby Doo collection from Wet n Wild", you said getting the box on the form of The Mystery Machine and the card out of the cardboard box, which Jack was quick to slice next to the door, before reading the small note on top, "It says 'post on Tik Tok the day it arrives'"

Organizing your enviroment and positioning your phone with the light in the tripod in a way it looked good, you started filming while the others watched or play with any item you had in your room (appearing for small seconds in the background), giving small reviews on the products

"Thank you so much Wet n Wild for thinking of me and sending these amazing products, it's an honor, and dearest friends behind the screen, make sure to watch these collection on the Wet n Wild page or in your local store, thank you so much and see you next time", you said finishing the five minute Tik Tok before writing a small description and uploading it, "First one done, one to go"

"I love the packaging in these", Willa commented sitting back next to you watching the products, "It's so fun"

"I know, the best honestly, is the make up bag in form of the Mystery Machine", you pointed, "Wet n Wild and Glamlite definately won this year with their collections"

While the boys started to play dress up with your accesories in your closet, you and Willa continued with the next box which was a bit smaller

"This is from That Candle Stuff", you said getting the box out, "It says 'enjoy the candles we personally picked for you', this is so cute"

"I once saw them on Tik Tok, they said they were doing a horror collection", Willa commented, "It could be that"

"Makes sense", you nodded, "I mean, I'm one of the horror nepo babies"

Getting the candles from the box noticing they were mostly of Ghostface and reading the card, you started to do the stories for insta reviewing the candles with small comments from Willa before tagging the store and uploading it

"And we're done, let's continue the costumes", you sighed, "Boys, let's go!"

Gattering the parts of Jack costume that would be covered in fake blood and three bottles of fake blood, the four of you, with Tatum in Romeo arms, went downstairs to go to the pool backyard

"Hey dad, we're going to work with fake blood"

"Just make sure to clean everything, don't want to see a mess"

Stepping to the backyard, you placed the shirt on top of old newspaper, with another in the middle, to start working while the rest sat next to you

"So, no corn syrup this time?", Jakob asked getting out of the house to see

"Wes was a genius by using corn syrup as a reference to Carrie, but is messy when using it, also sticky and uncomfortable, you don't want ants climbing on you", you responded putting fake blood on the shirt and spreading it with your hand, "Fake blood is easy to control and it dries without losing the original color"

"Little tornado, I trust your habilities and talent on VFX make up, but, do you have a back up plan in case something goes wrong?", Jakob asked crouching on the floor next to all of you

"Billy and Stu", Jack responded for you because you were focused on putting the fake blood in the right places

"Anything from the first movie basically", you resumed stopping to compare the shirt with the photo you printed, "Shirt is done"

Hanging the blodied shirt at the railling of the outside stairs, the next part was the long sleeved jean shirt, which Jack had to put in so it could be the most accurate as in the movie, and you had to stand in a small stool to do it correctly

"You know what bothers me more about seeing Carrie costumes every year?", Willa spoked sitting on the sofa and playing with Tatum, "The lack of fake blood"

"Totally right", Jack nodded while you and Romeo did the same according to her

"I mean, they don't pour the blood completely, it's only small droplets in the face and it's all", Willa continued, "Not even the dress, and the band? Carrie doesn't wear a band"

"I'll say high five but my hands are covered in blood", you joked dropping blood in the sleeves, "Carrie was covered in a whole bucket of blood, it wasn't like a mini bottle, it was a whole ass pig's blood, and if you don't want fake blood all over you, then find another way to do it"

Continuing with the conversation about Halloween costumes, you kept working with the fake blood on Jack's costume finishing and leaving the shirt hanging with the other so it dries overnight

And it wasn't until the night before going to sleep that you saw stories from Willa, Romeo and Jakob on instagram that said "no one takes Halloween more serious than Y/N", "when your best friend's girl is a VFX make up artist and you have a Halloween party" and "Is this how kids play these days?", respectively

When the saturday arrived, you slept with Tatum in your arms a bit more to survive for the night, waking up at noon to have a small brunch and then lunch with your dad before going upstairs to start the preparing for the party

And fortunately, the fake bloodied clothes were in perfect state

"Who's ready to party?", Jack exclaimed entering your room behind Willa and Romeo, "Hi, gorgeous"

"Hi babe", you responded while Jack bend over to hug you because you were in your make up chair, "Hi guys, Scott told us to be there an hour before it starts so we have a few hours to get ready"

"Can we see the cardigan?", Willa asked after leaving her bag in top of your bed

"Which cardigan?", you asked with a little smile starting to go to your closet

"You know which one", Willa exclaimed

"The Folklore ones, the Holiday ones, the Red one, the Speak Now one", you said grabbing the one she was refering to, "Or the 1989 one that came with the vynil and a written note!"

"Taylor knows that you exist!", Willa exclaimed getting close to you

"Taylor knows who I am", you screamed before starting to read the note, "As I re-release and reclaim my beloved 1989 album, I wanted to send you some gifts to say thank you for your suport, love Taylor"

Putting the 1989 TV vynil on your vynil player after chilling a little bit, the prepearing for the party continued, and even if Jack and Romeo didn't need make up, you and Willa still made them use facial masks

While they played with Tatum in the carpet, you and Willa helped with each others make up and hair, hers was wavy with the headband and yours was straight

Seeing how you and Willa we're almost ready with the hair and make up, the boys went to your closet to get change to their costumes before it was your turn to get changed, your version of the costume was like following the rule of Mean Girls, which was a strapples short black dress with a long sleeve fishnet top and long leather gloves

"Are you going to use the gloves all night?", Willa asked while organizing purses

"Only for photos", you responded helping putting some fake blood on Jack's hair, "I didn't cry for three hours for not show the tattoo"

"I can confirm that", Jack joked recieving a small tug in his hair by you, "That didn't hurt"

"I know", you smiled ruffling his hair a bit before cleaning your hands with wet wipes, "Does this give you flashbacks?"

"Yeah, but it would be better if you would've been there"

"I was there, for a day"

"But it wasn't enough"

"You know that I didn't wanted to get spoiled on everything"

"But I want to see you in one of the sets with me"

"Remember that James Cameron and Jon Landau invited me to the set when the filming for Avatar returns"

"And you'll be there?"

"Of course! I want to see you in the motion capture suit and the little dots on your face"

Laughing, Jack pulled you towards him to hug you but you tried to be careful because of the fake blood covering part of his face and hair

Once the four of you were ready and took some photos, you took your ghostface crossbody bag, the bling mask, the bling knife and the little VFX make up tool box that you prepare in case anyone needs it, to go downstairs, Tatum was downstairs since an hour ago

"Dad, we're about to go", you announced stopping in the living room where he was watching a movie with Tatum in the sofa

"Go change your shoes", Skeet ordered seeing your look, "I won't let my child use a Ghostface costume with crocs, put your Dr Martens or any type of boots you want, even sneakers, but not the crocs"

"What's wrong with them?", you laughed

"Ghostface doesn't use crocs!", Skeet exclaimed causing Jack, Willa and Romeo to giggle, "It's always boots or sneakers, not crocs"

"But I want to be comfortable", you justified

"Listen, tornado", Skeet sighed, "Since you started to be a public figure, content creator, influencer or whatever you want to call it, people started to call you the 'ghostface princess', and I won't let you humilliate yourself by wearing crocs to a Halloween Party, so-"

"Dad, this is a prank", you revealed still laughing, "I'm going to wear my over-the-knee platform black boots"

"Don't scare me like that again", Skeet sighed starting to get up from the couch, "Come on, I'm going to take some photos"

After changing shoes and posing on the living room, in the backyard and in the front door with some of the decorations, the four of you started to climb into Jack's car

"Don't be here too late, drive careful and if you need me to go get you just let me know", Skeet exclaimed, "Have fun!"

During the whole thirty minute ride to Scott's house the noises that filled the car were the soft music, indications from you and comments about the decorated houses until the way stopped in front of a big suburban house decorated for the date and with a few cars stationed in the entry

"Let's start the night!", Romeo exclaimed while walking to the entrance of the house

"You are going to get along so well", you smiled towards Willa and Romeo while walking hand in hand with Jack

"Totally", Jack agreeded, "They're really cool"

Arriving at the front door, you knocked the door, which only lasted for a few seconds because it was open by Scott who was dressed as Patrick Bateman

"There's my favorite Hollywood couple", Scott exclaimed with happiness, "You look incredible, all of you, come in"

"Hello Patrick Bateman", you greeted hugging him quickly

"Hi honey", Scott returned looking carefully at the four of you, "You made him look bloddy, I love it"

"Just another day on Sidney and Billy's life", Jack joked

"That's really creative", Scott commented

"You told us to be creative so we did", you shrudded

"And I'm going to asume that you are Willa and Romeo based on the anti-pathriarchy Barbie costumes", Scott smiled seeing them, "Nice to meet you, love the way you interpreted it"

"Thank you for let us come to the party", Romeo said

"The more the merrier", Scott simplified, "Besides, I like to have more friends"

"I hear my bestie's voice", Sarah exclaimed from another part of the house

"Is because your bestie is here", you responded

Walking through the house, the five of you went to the dinning room where the rest of the group was already there

"Hello Freddy, Michael and Ellen Ripley", you smiled towards Sarah, Abby (whoms costumes were in the same style as yours) and Noah respectively

"Hello, Ghostface and Sidney", Abby greeted, "And hello to you to Barbie and Allan"

"Sig!", Jack exclaimed as a joke going to hug Noah

"Jack Jack!", Noah also exclaimed hugging him back

Greeting and introducing everyone, the eight of you continued to help decorate the house and you added some details to the ones who had make up or blood on them

"So, how much people will be here?", Willa asked

"Like twenty something including us", Scott responded while you were splashing some fake blood on him, "It's something small"

"We always do something small", Noah explained, "We had this tradition since middle school to go threat or tricking and then go to one of our houses to have a sleepover"

"We started doing that because Kira and Bethany didn't invited us to their Halloween parties", Sarah laughed

"She tried us to go after she saw dad on a Riverdale commercial", you added, "Not even a chapter, it was only a commercial"

"Thank God you ended her during the late prom", Abbey pointed, "I think she deleted her Twitter account or it got suspended because it's not longer there"

"Cheers to that", Scott commented, "You've should see how our girl ended her"

"We saw the live", Romeo said, "Like the next day it was on the internet and Jack send it to us, it was wild"

⭒which leads me to say for sure that she was a theater girl, a little performer (she told me herself this morning), for that reason she loves to wear funny clothes and put herself in someone else's skin besides her own. she loves acting, that hobby never ceased to be an important part of her life, even as she became an adult with endless responsibilities, she always found a space for this activity.

⭒every year you would do your best to be at least a little bit up to her level, and every year you are vastly outdone by your wife.

she doesn't really care what you decided to wear as long as you feel comfortable and like your outfit, the only thing she truly cares about is the time she spends with you getting dressed up together. when she sees the final product she showers you with compliments, you look ravishing even specially in the most hideous and terrifying costume.

Baptiste's famous nightclub Faux Folie welcomes all New Yorkers for a night of Halloween celebrations. On nights like these, the guest list can be quite the challenge to get into —but the host is known to enjoy a little bargain. Most patrons are only familiar with its first level — but depending on how far your morals stretch, there's more fun to be had in the lower level, with casino gamblings and the lewd entertainment of Gentille Fille. More hidden still, the underground fight club of The Arène. Every year, the three gangs meet under the same roof, in open talks for the future. What deals can be struck, what conflicts stand between them and the law — where their very own State of the Union stands. But most importantly, where it will go. Except not all master communication with words; some prefer their fists. No matter what level you're on, one things for sure: you will never be bored.

IC, the event takes place on the night of October 31st. OOC, it starts on October 3rd. The end date will be determined soon.

Members aren’t required to pause non-event threads during this period, but are highly encouraged to prioritize them for fun, flowing interactions. Gentille Fille, a casino kept lively with not-so-legal gambling and exotic dancers. Access is open to those who would realistically have a reason to know about it — or stumbled upon it by chance.

The Arène, an underground fight club. Access and knowledge of its existence is extremely limited.

For Part One of this event, access to The Arène is ONLY granted to gang members and affiliates. In fact, The Brotherhood specifically invited their gangster counterparts to this level... almost like there is an ulterior motive, there. Almost.

Hello it's time to share...

The Basics of Vitani!

Name: Vitani, just Vitani and V for short. They tend not to think of their last name.

Age: Currently in the game 25, she looks and tends to act childishly, so people think she's closer to 19-23

Date of birth: October 31st, 2052. Her mom was adamant about that and fate granted that wish. Though V isn't a huge fan of her birthday (Halloween in general is a different story, though she still doesn't do much)

Gender: ??? It's unclear. Vitani is just themself in their eyes. But they use she/they pronouns and dresses very femme, so gets mistaken as a woman by many a gonk. Don't call her one though, or a girl (unless you're a certain someone using select pet names, or like, in a really gay way, if that makes sense)

Looks: Well she's the profile pic, so that but kinda chubby, and 5'2. Though at the beginning of the game she had a blue fade into pink, but changed it after a bit of a break down. Really the following pic (obvi not my art btw, grabbed it off Pinterest), is about what her body type is.

Family: V doesn't do family, doesn't like them, in fact, hates families! If she had to choose though, her mom is Mama Welles, and Jackie was her brother. Oh, and obviously Nibbles is her daughter and her lizard son Stewart. (In actuality she had a mom, step-dad, and two brothers, but they sort of just left her.)

Friends: Laughable to ask really. Most of V's friends have died, and it's absolutely V's fault. She shouldn't have friends... (Also in actuality, she gets along with a surprising number of people, but feels very few connections to others. Her closest friends are obviously Johnny, Misty, and Viktor. In that order. At least as far as the alive ones go. If she's counting dead ones it's Jill-an oc made for V's story, Jackie, and Johnny, all of them are equal).

Romance: Not much of one, briefly had a boyfriend, but he was like a blip on the radar in V's life. It was also an online thing started on some forum. They never met up due to home life stuff. As for in game romances? Also none, everyone is great, but really just as a friend... Except for a certain someone stuck in their brain, though it's unrealized until the ✨best day ever and beach scene✨. Because obviously they have a "best day ever and beach scene" thing.

Fears: Everything to a certain degree, but that's the insurmountable anxiety she has. Most of their fears are rational, such as sexual assault (never happened to them, but makes sense from backstory things), people leaving (nullified if V leaves first), and idk their current capitalistic nightmare hellscape.

Hobbies: V likes trying just about anything and everything. A maker at heart. But she loves music, cooking, playing video games, collecting low-tech gadgets, history, and politics. Is politics even a hobby? V doesn't know and doesn't care. It is now.

What's important right now?: Saving both Johnny and herself, specifically by getting him a body (yay! Johnny gets a body AU!). It's a thing they've been dead set on once she thought about it. Mostly because to choose herself over him? Impossible, especially towards the end of their time together... As for the game canon, it's technically the same goal, but unsuccessful.

Fighting style: Talk first, then sneak, then carnage. That's the general rule of thumb with how Vitani deals with things. Not always in that order, and not all at once. Relies on subterfuge and knocking people out, but will become borderline frenzied if spotted or if things go wrong. Typically uses a katana (specifically Evelyn's), but switches to the Malorian once she gets it (it's her safety gun).

And if I'm being honest I don't know what else would be basic questions you ask about a character, so we're done!

That last image is so interesting to me. Americans often ask me how Catholic portugal is because they see these religious holidays being official days off and they see celebrations on the streets, and they think there's no separation of church and state and we're practising catholics. Which makes sense! From the outside looking in, I would have thought he same! But the interesting thing is, our constitution actually forbids religious institutions to meddle with political affairs. Freedom of religion is explicitly stated in the constitution, but it should never interfere with political matters. However, this is a country with an extensive catholic history, and so many of our traditions are rooted in catholicism. Mardi Gras is a major event, there are parades, school is off and everyone dresses up (it's our halloween), but not a lot of people attend Ash Wednesday mass anymore. Easter is extremely important because it's a family day, but only practising catholics practise lent and abstain from meat. Summertime is essentially one three month long celebration of many saints, all of them with different practises. So many people still jump the fire on St John's day, or even bury St Anthony because they want to find love. And they're still not practising catholics.

So let me tell you a story. Years ago, during Troika so around 2008, our then centre-right government decided that, to increase productivity overall, some holidays were going to end. This means, days like 8th of December (immaculate conception), and as far as I remember, 15th of August (assumption day) were not days off, per government mandate, anymore. They were just another work day.

Now, there were other holidays that were taken away (October 5th, which is repulbic day, was one of them) and they tried to balance things, so half religious and half historical. But the point of the matter is we had more work days a year because of this.

And people were absolutely pissed about this. Troika era was fucking awful in many ways, and this was one of the hardest moments in many people's lives. I mean, for some perspective, murder-suicides increased horrifically because poverty was escalating so much. But this was where we went "they fucking lost it". Because setting aside the whole issue that working 4 days more in a year will NOT increase productivity and it's a fallacy, what the people saw here was a government taking away the people's right to rest. Practicing catholics were offended that they couldn't honour their beliefs, and non Catholics or non practicing catholics were insulted that they couldn't have an extra day off in these dates especially because many of them would fall on a friday and they could have a long weekend.

I always joke in my tours when someone asks me if we're catholic and say that we are mostly non practicing, but you take away a saint's celebration and there will be a revolution. And it's true. Because it has become part of the culture. Most of us will eat meat and not practice lent, but on easter everyone is eating folar and almonds. Now, even the belief that it is my god given right to have this day off because it's a holiday, religious or not, is rooted in a long history of catholicism. In catholic countries, rest is fundamental. Enjoying your life in a moment of rest is extremely important. You see it in here, Spain, Italy, Greece, etc.

So I think the shock comes down not to catholicism or religious holidays being days off. It comes down to labour laws. Because also from my niche experience, with americans being just an example here, this is indeed strange to them. But they love it. It's one of the many things they say makes them feel so welcomed.

But do you want an even more striking example of this? Last food tour I did, there was a huge protest going on. I mean thousands on the streets. They naturally asked me what it was, and I told them this was the result of an ongoing strike by teachers who were fighting for public school, gor better work conditions and pay. They all said, oh that's amazing, I hope something comes out of it!

Then we started the tour and we get to Ginjinha, and I look at the huge line and start laughing to myself, and I do mean the line was ENORMOUS. So I stop them, point at the line and say "this, what you're seeing right here, is the most Portuguese thing im the world. Because these are all protestors. They all have shirts and posters saying "for the right of our public education", but THIS is how you do a protest in Portugal. Go out and fight, but on god, I need my pause for lunch, dinner and a glass of ginjinha"

So when I was a kid, in like, 2006-2007, there was a game series called SingStar. It was a singing version of guitar hero basically. Anyways, my friend loved singing games and had gotten 2 of them. SingStar Rocks and SingStar Pop. I also really enjoyed them, so we played them all the time. But on the one game, SingStar Pop, there was an My Chemical Romance song, Helena. I was absolutely fascinated by the music video and loved the song and everything about it. (I was a really depressed kid and anything dark, morbid, etc was a fascination for me) So I of course, would beg to play that song all the time with her. But she didn’t like it. She thought it was weird and explicitly said “Boys aren’t supposed to wear makeup”. (Which, she also loved doing Fall Out Boy’s Dance, Dance and thats got Pete Wentz in eye liner, plus like, all the other reasons thats a fucked up statement but we were 10-11 so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) and made a rule that if we did that song, then we had to do one of the songs she liked that I hated. And I hated those more than my love of the weird funeral rock song that she would complain about every time we played it even if we were playing it in exchange for one I hated. So we almost never played Helena unless we did a random shuffle and it happened to pick it (which I celebrated every time but also regretted being happy about because I did it so infrequently that I couldn’t do well on the actual singing part of the game >.<).

For years, that was all I knew about mcr. They were “those boys who wore makeup that [childhood friend] said Im not supposed to like”. Then I got into high school and met this girl and we kissed after a party once, and I desperately needed her in my life more. And she said she was writing a fanfiction about a band and if I helped beta read it, then we would have something to talk about/more time to hang out. But I didn’t know the band at all. Turns out it was mcr. She wrote me a quick primer on each band member and the general traits I should know about them. I do not at all remember what she said beyond like, “Mikey plays Bass and is the brother of Gerard, who sings. Frank plays Guitar, Ray plays Guitar, and Bob used to play drums but doesn’t anymore” (this was post Bob leaving the band but before we all knew the extent of how bad he is). But anyways, I helped edit the fic and it took months and during the writing and editing process we ended up dating. Then 4 years later, we broke up, about 1 year after mcr broke up.

My ex is and isn’t important to this story because on the one hand, this is a story about how MCR has influenced my life over the years. But on the other hand, if it weren’t for My Chemical Romance, my ex and I would have never gotten together, or stayed together as long as we did. Our official first date was at an MCR concert. And those 4 years with them have some of the biggest impacts on my life to this day out of any other era of my life. A lot of who I am today can be directly attributed to things I experienced and learned through dating them. Hell I joined tumblr because of them, know about AO3 because of them, and learned…. So much about just. How actual real adult life works because of them.

But beyond my ex and I breaking up, MCR was still gone. They had broken up too. And I fell out of the fandom. Sure I still listened to the music and occasionally would talk about the band with other fans who I met, but it was bittersweet and painful.

Then in October 2019, I was at a halloween party hosted by my college. I was going through a bad relationship. And then news dropped that MCR had reunited. I could not pay attention to anything else. That was the most exciting thing that had happened in years. A month later, I was single. I had remembered that there were things more important in life and that I didn’t have to put up with the guy I was dating if I didn’t want to. So I didn’t. And my life got instantly better.

Then the pandemic hit. And shows were rescheduled. And the world put on hold. And then the blm protests happened. And my world got dark again. I dated another person who wasn’t good for me. (Nor I them). I restructured my life around what I thought I could settle for. And went on like that for over a year.

MCR did their European leg of their tour but I didn’t pay much attention. I never paid attention to tours I couldn’t attend since any other time in my life, the best we got was after the show we might get some nice photos or a grainy far away video, and it was rarely worth it. Plus with covid still happening, I kept expecting shows to be cancelled or rescheduled.

And then MCR got to the US leg of the tour. And at first, I planned to ignore it just the same as the European leg. And then a few days later, my news app showed me an article about one of their shows. Which I thought was odd because what could they have done that was so impressive that the news would write about it, and despite not having MCR news in my usual like, algorithmically decided interests, have it show up in my news feed. So I clicked it.

It was Nashville and suddenly a picture of Gerard Way wearing a cheerleader dress was directly in front of me. So I checked tumblr for the first time in a few months. Blogs that I had followed for fandoms over the years that had never been MCR blogs were posting about it. Old MCR blogs that had long been abandoned years ago but I never bothered to unfollow, suddenly were running and posting again. And I checked the tags to see what the general masses on tumblr were saying too. And every single post I saw, was an absolute outpouring of positivity and kindness and happiness. I didn’t see a single negative post. I didn’t even see any borderline inappropriate horny-on-main posts like I expected. I followed a few blogs and figured that was it. That I might check tumblr a bit more often and reblog some cool new-era-of-MCR posts. I figured nothing more shocking or emotionally investing could happen after the cheerleader dress. That was already crazy getting to see even that much.

But then they were playing Portland and a lot of the blogs I had followed were really hyped up and talking about livestreaming the show. And I wasn’t busy that night so I figured Id turn it on as background noise. And ended up watching every minute of it. The next day, I had a full break down. I couldn’t fathom settling with my life when something so incredibly amazing was out there.

That weekend, the local pop punk night DJ for the bar I go to occasionally was putting on an MCR themed/specific pop punk night, to commemorate the anniversary of the first time they played my city. I decided to make the cheerleader dress and wear it there and double it as a halloween costume. I made it in 3 days in time for the bar night.

Getting to the bar, I was nervous. The dress was short. And I’m afab but nonbinary, and I know most people look at me and say “that’s a girl” without thinking about it further. In a dress, that’s even more likely. In a short dress, I couldn’t imagine anything else happening. When I got to the bar, I was so nervous I was shaking. I immediately ordered 2 shots and a drink, hoping that being drunk would take away the anxiety. As I was waiting on my drinks, someone approached me to compliment the dress and ask me questions about how I sewed it. He wanted to buy a sewing machine for his girlfriend for Christmas and needed to know what kind to buy her. It was a nice chat.

Then, after, I went into the crowd proper. I had so many people compliment my dress, it was crazy. I had expected only a few people to even recognize it. It was a random outfit they wore once on stage, less than 2 weeks prior. Most of these people weren’t even hardcore MCR fans, just pop punk in general. But every single hardcore MCR fan I saw complimented the dress. And also? absolutely none of them assumed I was a girl. Not one. Most asked for pronouns. None were weirded out when I answered they/them. None looked at me like I was crazy or said anything negative. Some said they were too. It was the most shocking experience I have ever had in terms of my gender identity.

Out of the 4 people Ive dated in my life, 3 had been or later came out as (binary) trans people. All three of the ones who are trans, had made me feel like my gender wasn’t valid. (The cis ex I never ended up coming out to.) and those had been people who claimed to love me. People I saw every day. And yet here were a bunch of drunk MCR fans seeing someone who was very obviously female, and femme, and wearing a very short dress. And not one assumed or made me feel wrong or bad about my gender or presentation.

More time passed after that night and more shows came and went. LA nights 1-4 came and were insane every time.

And then last night. LA night 5. Of course I had to livestream it. I sobbed for most of the show. And being in a discord that was also livestreaming this show, and on tumblr seeing what people were posting, meant I got to see this extreme outpouring of love from all of the fans. And also see the outpouring of love from MCR themselves to their fans and to each other.

And for the first time since… Well pretty much ever really for me, the world doesn’t seem dark. There is so much hope and love in this world and I just. I don’t have the words to describe how incredibly much it means to me. Ive been on the verge of happy tears all day.

When I was first in the fandom back during the danger days era, there was always the cliche of saying “MCR saved my life”. And I understand it now. Do I think they saved my life? No. I did that. I went through hell to make it where I am now and no one can take that away from me. The same way the members of the band had to tear down the band and go through their own brands of hell to get to where they all are and get to play these shows for us at all. We had to do that on our own. The band didn’t do that for us.

But at the same time? Seeing that show last night? My Chemical Romance absolutely made my life worth saving. And I really really hope it makes theirs too.

Halloween 

Halloween 2022 on October 31 is undoubtedly the creepiest, most ghostly holiday of them all. Children dress up as Batman, the Joker, Wonder Woman, or some other favorite character; go to parties or walk their neighborhoods with jack o’ lanterns full of sweets as they go trick-or-treating. Spooky decorations fill windows and porches and screams can be heard in living rooms up and down the country as we collectively binge our favorite horror movies.

Though Halloween is expected to look somewhat different this year, See’s Candies wanted to let everyone know that you can still celebrate and have fun, safely! There are many ways to celebrate Halloween that don’t involve going door-to-door trick-or-treating in search of Halloween sweets.

History of Halloween

The word, Halloween or Hallowe’en dates from before the 16th century and draws from its early Christian past. In old Scottish, Hallowe’en translates as “All Hallows’ (holy) Even” referring to “All Hallows’ Evening,” the day before All Hallows Day, a solemn occasion in which all of the Catholic Church’s heavenly saints were honored. Going back in time, Halloween is fascinating because it has lots of practices that date back to its pagan origins. For example, the Halloween tradition of bobbing for apples reminds us of the Roman invasion of England. As part of Roman paganism, they brought an apple tree, symbolic of Pomona, Goddess of Plenty. During an annual festival, young marriage-minded people bit into apples floating in the water. According to beliefs, whoever bit the apple was next to marry.

But it’s really the Celts we have to thank for Halloween. They were ancient people who lived in the areas of modern-day Ireland, northern France, and in the UK. Halloween’s pagan roots go back thousands of years to the Celtic Fire Festival of Samhain, which recognized the end of the harvest season and the start of their new year on November 1.

During this festival, pagans wore costumes and lit fires to keep the bad spirits away – keep that in mind when you’re donning your Dracula fangs! With the dark nights of winter representing death, the Celts believed that on October 31, the dead returned to walk among the living. Sounds kind of zombie-ish, right?

The Christian Influence

As Christian influence on society began to grow around the 8th century, new customs and traditions were brought in and merged with those of the Celts. Christians would celebrate All Souls Day on November 2, which was a day to honor the dead in much the same way that the Celts did on Samhain. It was around this time that the evening before the celebration became known as All Hallows Eve.

After All Hallows Day was officially switched to November 1 in 835, October 31 became known as All Hallows Eve and the holiday we know and love today was starting to take shape. By the 12th century, these days had gained holy importance throughout Europe, and customs such as ringing the church bells for the souls of those in purgatory had become widespread.

A typical Halloween would see a mournful crier parading through the streets, dressed all in black, ringing bells, and encouraging the locals to pray for the souls of the dead. It was around this time that “souling” began to happen, but there’s more about that further down in the trick-or-treat section. By the Middle Ages churches were too poor to display the relics of martyred saints and so churchgoers began dressing up as them every year instead. This could partly explain where the tradition of dressing up on Halloween stems from.

Halloween in America

Halloween became popular in America in the 19th century, with enthusiasm for the holiday being brought across with the Irish and Scottish immigrants who were arriving at the time. The biggest change from Halloween’s earliest roots is that it becomes more secular than religious. By the 1920s and 30s, Halloween parades and parties became a major part of the festivities and the holiday was celebrated from coast to coast, regardless of race or religious background.

Trick-or-Treating

Trick-or-treating is said to stem from the practice of “souling”, which is a Medieval practice where churchgoers would go between different parishes and ask the rich for pastries which were known as soul cakes. In return, they would pray for the souls of them and their friends. While “souling”, people would carry with them lanterns made of hollowed-out turnips. That turnip is now of course a pumpkin and it is believed that that the jack-o-lantern originally represented the souls of the dead.

By the late 19th century children in Scotland and Ireland were dressing up in costume and going from door to door accepting gifts from neighbors, this practice was known as “guising”. The children would generally be given bits of food for their efforts. The first recorded instance of this in America is in 1911. The term trick-or-treat was first used in Alberta, Canada, in 1927, and by the 1930s it was starting to become a popular activity.

Modern Day Halloween

By the 1950s Halloween became a holiday that was primarily for the children. Trick-or-treating was commonplace as kids went around their neighborhoods in costume collecting candy. Halloween became increasingly embedded in popular culture and horror movies would often be released to coincide with the holiday. Movies such as “Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Halloween,” and “Friday the 13th” have all become classics associated with the holiday.

Halloween is now America’s second-largest commercial holiday, with $6 billion being spent on it each year. Numerous traditions such as trick-or-treating, costume parties, and watching horror movies all contribute towards a huge occasion that is celebrated throughout the country.

Halloween plays off our phobias. Killer clowns and antique dolls creep you out? Bats and spiders make your skin crawl? Does the sight of blood make you faint? Don’t go into that room and don’t go out on Halloween. But if you do — look over your shoulder! On Halloween, be a kid again or take on a new persona. Watch out for ghosts and goblins and things that go, “bump” in the night. Eat as much candy as your tummy can hold. Enjoy feeling totally scared for just. one. night. Happy Halloween, everybody!

Hunny – Warehouse On Watts – Philadelphia, PA – October 31, 2023

Indie rock/pop group HUNNY, from California, brought their mini-12-date tour to Philly on October 30. After the release of their second studio album New Planet Heaven, in early October, the band hit the road and stopped at Philly’s Warehouse on Watts. The show was not sold out, and the crowd was very intimate. It ended up being a small-scale show that really blew the audience away and left them wanting more when it was coming to an end.

Having two opening acts, Modern Ties & Lurk, the crowd was getting prepared for a super fun show. The upbeat, pop sound of Modern Ties, a small band from Scranton, PA, had the audience jumping along and enjoying the music. When Lurk came out, the energy shifted, and the sound changed. Their sound, much different than Modern Ties, gave the audience a taste of how the night was going to sound. With more of a rock tone, they sort of captured the audience and grasped their attention.

HUNNY took the stage with arguably one of their best songs, “Natalie” off their first EP: “Pain/Ache/Loving,” released in 2015. An insane way to begin the show, with a song so strong and loved by the audience. The energy in the room was unmatched. The setlist was an incredible mix of songs, old and new. The next few songs were off their new album New Planet Heaven. The crowd seemed to enjoy the new songs and knew all the words.

The room was heating up as everyone was dancing and jumping around. Jason Yarger, the lead singer of HUNNY, in his leather jacket, was continuously wiping the sweat off his head and struggling to keep up with the audience. Even though the crowd was small, the energy was unmatched, and everyone was having a great time. The band played “Halloween” (off their album Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes) the day before the holiday. Some people in the audience even dressed up in their Halloween costumes. The end of the setlist was more of their most popular songs like “Vowels (And The Importance of Being Me)” and “Televised.”

Overall, HUNNY put on an outstanding show. The mix of songs off the different albums, EPs, and singles, left the audience feeling fulfilled, being able to hear HUNNY’s works from 2015 through 2023. The band will continue their mini tour with five more dates in the US. Get out and go see HUNNY for a show you’ll never forget.

April 5: Evaluating WIP Big Bang Choices

Sign-ups for WIP Big Bang have started but I've been too distracted with Troped Madness to really think about it. I'm leaning toward signing up but not pairing with an artist, mostly because I doubt there will be anyone else from T100 doing this, and I just don't want to have to worry about it or feel like anyone is obligated to make anything for me, etc. It's also not really that important to me that I'm paired with an artist for this. I just want, like, some kinda structure for finishing these things. I like signing up for events. I liked watching people brag at the end of the last round. I continue to be of the naive mistake that THIS event or THIS particular structure will fix me. So. I want to sign up for those reasons, but if I don't finish--eh, it won't put anyone else out to drop out.

So I think there's no downside to signing up.

As to with what... I looked through my fics and didn't find that many that fit the requirements, surprisingly: 500+ words written and at least 7,500 to finish. This is probably because I call something a "WIP" even if I only have a few vague notes for it lol.

In my poll-experiment, the Southern Gothic AU won, which is not surprising to me, since it's the one I talk about the most often and have talked about the most recently. Sleeping Beauty came in second, and my other 2 options, Troped Horror 2022and Troped Madness Horror Round, were last. Probably how I would rank them as a reader, myself, especially with how vague I've been about them.

Here are my thoughts on each, and their respective pros/cons.

Southern Gothic: The pros are that I'm very invested in this story, I think it is/could be one of the best thing I've ever written, and I could definitely use a kick to actually finish it. At this point, I've moved from putting off writing to putting off planning to putting off thinking about planning and I always have so many excuses about it. I'm pretty overwhelmed both by the expectations I've set for it and the still-semi-scattered notes etc. on it. Never mind the sheer number of words still left. In particular, I'm scared that I lost my chance to finish this, that it was of a certain time and now it's just... too late.

The con is that I would want to post it closer to Halloween and posting for the Big Bang ends on October 31, with non-extension posting ending in mid-October. I guess if I picked one of the last dates, it would be still decidedly spooky season? Idk if this is a really lame excuse to put this off again.

Sleeping Beauty: The pros are, again, I need the stupid push because I wanted to resurrect and finish this in, like, late 2020 and STILL have not. I did some significant work in May 2021 and then it fizzled again. I don't have that much to write--almost certainly more than 7.5k, but not a lot compared to the total word count and I just... refuse to consider this functionally abandoned fic to be abandoned because that would mean trashing so much work that I haven't even shared with anyone. But again, it's just never more important than other stuff.

The con is that I don't like this fic as much as SGAU and if I had to pick one to see completed, it would be SGAU.

Troped Madness Horror Round: The pros of this is that, even though I do think I have more than 7.5k left, this fic is much shorter and simpler than the first two. It's not even multi-chap. So it feels like maybe a more do-able goal? On the other hand, still a worthwhile one, because I am really overwhelmed by it and what I want it to be so, again, having a structured event to help force me to make it a priority might be helpful.

The con is that I have a better chance of working on/finishing this without the Big Bang so perhaps I should put that effort somewhere else.

Troped Horror 2022: This is, appropriately given the poll, the exact same situation. This fic is easier than Madness Horror in that it's much more... plot-y and less concerned with trying to explore a theme and actually say something meaningful. The main twist/difficulty with it is that I think it is the rare fic where I need to scrap huge chunks, possibly everything, that I have already written and re-plot, re-write. I realized at some point while I was frantically scribbling that it didn't make sense or feel right and I should have made a different choice way earlier. And at that point, I didn't have the time to re-write it for the event so I just put it aside to think on some more.

This one is probably the weakest contender for the Big Bang because the work is really more in the planning and outlining, and I think when I get to writing, it won't be as hard. Writing the first version was easy and fun. It was just WHAT I was writing that I didn't like. I do need a certain amount of set time and energy to get back into this but when I do, I don't know that I'll need an event structure to help me, and I'm also... not in as much of a hurry about it as I am with the other three.

       Cassie Nightingale is one of the many people whisper about in Manitou Springs. The woman has found solace nestled at the foot of Pike’s Peak with her daughter Thea, Grey House Bed & Breakfast, and shop on main street called The Bell, Book & Candle. The are is enriched with positive energy and spirit unlike any other. Cassie’s shop is filled with all kinds of odds and ends, but she is most known for her holistic medical approach found in forms of potions, tea and crystals. Labels such as wiccan and witch had been cast upon the brunette for as long as she can remember, but they aren’t wrong. Though she practices the art of witchcraft never has she admitted to doing so. The world is left with mystery about the woman’s choice of life and that is fine by her. 

        When Cassie isn’t working she is spending time with family. Just 6 years ago she lost the love of her life to a freak accident. Jake was a Park Ranger as well as part of the Mountain Rescue team. A call for a couple who slipped while hiking pulled Thea’s father away that day but a loose boulder took his life. There is no ill will towards anyone for the accident. However, Cassie decided she will never date again. It would be selfish to find such a deep love twice in a lifetime when some couldn’t even find one.
