thinking about the character again (cinderpelt) and it's likely unintentional and a result of either her shifting narrative role from young go getter to wise mentor or a shift in how the books display their own politics but i find something really tragic in-universe in how she develops from a character who will actively and willingly break the warrior code when it conflicts with her own morals (immediately lying to cover for graystripe and silverstream, acting in direct defiance of her leadership to nurse littlecloud and whitethroat back to health) but overtime through her role she gradually grows more god-fearing and pious and embodies somewhat of a "starclan is always right, even when they are cruel, and we need to accept that" position

idk man. idk. I'm still feeling Squilf is gonna bite it before becoming leader, tbh now i'm thinking she and Bramble might bite it together

feels like they are stalling for something to happen. feels like if the plan was for her to smoothly become leader she would have just. done it at the end of last book.

and that the next books preview still didn't mention it, like why are they being so cagey about this if she just becomes leader exactly like they planned, no problems? there's gotta be a Problem(tm) of SOME kind. maybe the Problem won't be dying, but dying would be easy and dramatic

Also, the fact that they had her make ivypool deputy before leaving, instead of waiting to announce it in an official normal ceremony after coming back?? it would make more sense to wait until she was sure she even could promote a deputy. has a future leader ever made their deputy announcement before getting their leader name?? (i honestly don't remember)

feels weird.

I get that there's all this set up for squilf being a conflict-causer with shadowclan, but it's not like they need squilf specifically to do that, i'm sure other cats can want to fight shadowclan. if thunderclan also suddenly has leader issues they could collectively start getting extra insecure about it. maybe they'd all want to fight shadowclan's idea even more to compensate

Prologue

There should’ve been more than one.

The pale moon illuminated the star-shine grounds, catching the fresh dew glittering in the long grass. Ferns and trees rustled in the soft breeze, much warmer than the she-cat experienced in her last days; prey scuttling between the bushes left a warm scent on the wind. Leaf-bare faded to Greenleaf as she’d opened her eyes, color returning to the landscape like the early rays of dawn. In stories, she’d expected to see more than one cat here: kits, elders, and warriors in their turn, hunting and resting and sharing tongues. No clan boundaries separated them in death, for they were all one clan: StarClan.

That was what she’d been told.

That was what she’d believed.

However, as her blue eyes traveled over the expanse, only one cat stood in the grassy expanse. From far away, it looked tiny and swathed in stars like her own fur. Maybe the others were waiting to greet her farther on. She padded through the high grass towards the star-swathed figure, feeling it tickle her flank as she walked.

Strength filled her muscles as she wandered closer to the figure, her blue-gray fur brushing against the dew. She squeaked when her paw entered a tiny pool at the end of a stream, a ribbon of moonlight cutting across the moor. She didn’t feel thirsty, but it looked so inviting that she bent down and lapped at the pool and was relieved when her throat did not spasm when it hit her tongue. The water was cold and sweet. The water did not hurt.

Her head cleared like cobwebs in mist as she padded towards the other cat waiting for her on the moor, her tail raised in greeting.

“Hello!” She mewed as she met the other cat, their pale visage becoming clearer as she neared it. It was tiny, just a kit. Her kit.

“Shellkit,” she mewed, gazing down at the gray kit, speckled with white. She bent down to lick his forehead and was surprised when he flinched away.

She took a step back, uncertain.

“Shellkit?” She asked, tail curling around herself. Why was her own kit afraid of her?

“I’m sorry, mama,” he said, looking down at the ground. “You cannot enter StarClan’s grounds. I’ve been sent to escort you to the forest.”

Horror pulsed through the she-cat. She looked around, waiting for some cat to pop out of the long grass.

“We were just kidding!” They’d say and invite her in. And she would laugh nervously and follow them into the sky. She waited on bated breath, looking for a hint of fur, of mischievous eyes. No cat came.

The forest was as quiet as the sky as she looked down at her kit.

“Why not?” she asked. “I was a loyal ThunderClan cat. I deserve to be with my ancestors. I deserve to be with you.”

Shellkit looked up again, and beneath his chin stood a terrible scar. His DeathWound. When had he received such a terrible thing? When had he died again? She struggled to remember, with the fog still thick in her mind.

“I’m sorry,” he echoed again, “please follow me.”

“Wait, Shellkit, I don’t understand,” she mewed as she followed him. “What did I do? Why can’t I be with you? Shellkit, answer me!”

But Shellkit did not answer.

Shellkit only bounded away on legs surprisingly swift for being such a tiny body. She had to run to keep up with him, barely keeping sight of him in the long grass. Only his little tail was visible, white and shining like a distant star.

As she followed him, the moon grew steadily darker until it gave off the light of only a claw moon, though she swore it was still full above her. The trees grew darker, and the undergrowth died away.

The trees stood tall above her in sickly shades of black and brown, and the prey scent faded from the breeze. It was replaced with a rotten smell, like something had died far away and never been buried or like water stagnating in a pool. Still, Shellkit bounded forward, and she did not have the breath to ask him where he was taking her.

Finally, Shellkit stopped next to another cat, a giant warrior she did not recognize. She swore she’d met him before, but his name escaped her as she met his face. He looked up at her with undisguised disgust in his amber eyes. She shivered, noting his claws slide out into the earth. Polydactyl. Extra.

There was no doubt he would deliver a nasty blow if she met the end of those claws, and though she felt stronger in death, she did not feel strong enough to take on a warrior like this. Scars crisscrossed his starlit form, torn ears and flesh.

She shrank away from him, her neck fur rising.

“You have to go in the forest now, mama,” Shellkit mewed.

“But I haven’t done anything wrong,” she said again. “I don’t understand.”

Shellkit’s blue eyes met hers with such pools of sadness that they felt like twin claws piercing her heart. No kit should have to wear such an expression of misery. He lifted his chin again, indicating his DeathWound with one tiny paw.

“You’ll remember soon, mama.”

“Step into the forest,” the massive tom interrupted. “You had enough time to say goodbye when you lived.”

She turned back to him, bewildered, then back to her son.

“I’m going to find out what happened, Shellkit. Then I’ll come back for you, okay?” She mewed gently, reaching out to him.

Again, Shellkit flinched away from her touch and danced just out of reach, the hair on his back standing up.

“Get a move on!” The massive tabby snarled, swiping a massive paw over her haunches. She whimpered in pain as she lurched towards the dying trees. He hadn’t even used his claws, but her thigh throbbed where he’d smacked it. She limped out of reach. The grass beneath her paws felt dead and sticky.

“I’m going,” she said meekly, shrinking away from him. With one last look at her kit, she limped into the dark forest. She would find out what in StarClan’s name was going on, why she’d been sent to this horrible place.

She had to.

I can't be the only one here who thinks it's unfair to allow kittypets on this site. Posting pictures of themselves and their mates inside of the twolegplace, influencing the young kits on this site to abandon their Clans... surely everyone else sees the problem with this as well.

This is Clanblr, not "Kittypetblr". This was specifically made as a space for Clan cats to connect, not for kittypets to push their lifestyle on us.

They're going to convince our kits to abandon their home and their belief in StarClan just for a more secure life.

The recent drama surrounding Kipper the Kittypet is sad and I hate that he's being bashed just for existing, but it's also incredibly stupid. I believe the cat who wrote the original post said something like, "it's CLANblr, not KITTYPETblr," and then something about belief in StarClan and I just... do you even realize how many Clanblr mods are non-Clan and/or don't believe in StarClan?

To name a few, @s-t-a-r-burning is former WindClan now rogue & openly an atheist, @theshadowhaseyes has been a kittypet his whole life, and @ssuunnrraayy-p has made zir entire blog about how ze travels from one Clan to another & doesnt consider zimself a Clan cat. Those are all mods. "It's clanblr no-" shut up. Just shut up.

I think a lot of cats put way too much emphasis on the parts of the warrior code that dont matter, and forget the parts that do, like "feed elders and kits first" and "never neglect a kit in pain or danger"... I feel like those are significantly more important than "a warrior rejects the soft life of a kittypet," but maybe that's just me.

I feel like we don't talk enough about how SkyClan got chased out of their own territory during a time of crisis rather than all of the Clans trying to make room for everyone...

I mean, seriously. I know it's taught to all SkyClan apprentices, but I've talked to some of my friends from other Clans and they just. Didn't know that. They were never taught that the other Clans allowed SkyClan to be chased out due to territory loss.

been bouncing around an au in my head for a while. i dont have much solidified yet but here’s the three and their respective parentage

finchfeather (jayfeather) is the oldest of the three, he was born shortly after whitewing and birchfall became warriors (he was.. unplanned LOL)

finch and dove are siblings as jay’s wing and dove’s wing were siblings. it just makes more sense to me

since jay and dove have bird themed names, ivy gets a new one - pigeonfall to parallel dovewing (pigeon- from doves and pigeons being in the same family; -fall from her father since -wing is from their mother). jayfeather got changed to finchfeather since he’s no longer crow’s son (jays and crows are corvids)

holly and lion inherited their “manes” from leafpool’s side of the family

u can see the “order” of the three by the # of white dots on their faces lol

pigeon gets green eyes cuz pretty

finch can perceive light and shadows, but not much else. to him, starclan cats radiate very brightly its almost impossible for even him to miss them.

squirrelflight has fertility issues, yellowfang did lie about being completely barren, though. she and brambleclaw had been trying for kits for moons so he considered it a miracle by the time the three were finally born. it was considered a cryptic pregnancy as whitewing didnt know she was pregnant until her third trimester!

sandstorm, daisy, and ferncloud noticed leafpool’s pregnancy. the latter two kept quiet, and had to convince sandstorm not to mention it before leafpool was ready.

i dont havw any other notes rn but maybe i’ll post more of this au later lol
