miya osamu is a busy man.
even on days that the shop is closed, there’s always something to do, whether it’s prepping for the next day, or going over inventory. he’s used to rising early and sleeping late.
miya osamu, however, is also a little weak when it comes to you.
so when you’d asked the day before if he wanted to bake bread with you, he’d immediately said yes.
and sure, he has a laundry list of things that need to be done today - a leaky sink that needs to be looked at, a batch of umeboshi he’s supposed to start - but he just couldn’t tell you no. couldn’t even fathom the idea.
did he know anything about baking bread? absolutely not, but how hard could it be, really? it’s bread. if you’d asked him to help you bake and decorate a five tier wedding cake, he would have said yes.
and, no, it’s not because he has a crush on you or anything like stupid tsumu who can’t mind his own business claims. stupid tsumu who keeps calling him things like whipped and a simp. stupid tsumu who has never felt the touch of a woman, he’s sure.
it’s just because he wants to be nice (to you, at least), because you’re his friend.
his friend, whose company he always sought after whether it’s walking around with you at the grocery or just stopping by to help you change a bulb. whose smile makes him weak in the knees and whose simple texts almost always make him blush.
okay, so maybe you’re a good friend.
that’s all.
“samu! come in, come in,” you greet, ushering him inside.
you’re wearing an apron when you open the door to let him inside your apartment. it’s stained with beige fingerprints, and when you turn around to lead him into the kitchen, he sees you’ve tied the strings into a cute bow, sitting right atop the curve of your—
he immediately averts his gaze when you glance over your shoulder to smile at him, his cheeks burning. baking is supposed to be a platonic activity.
“i already did the first few steps,” you explain, flicking on your kitchen light. after washing his hands, osamu rests his elbows on your island countertop, watching with interest as you pull a bowl from the fridge. “i had to refrigerate the dough for twelve hours and didn’t want to make you wait around that long, so i did it overnight. now all we have to do is shape it, let it rest, then bake!”
osamu will always be a restaurant owner first and foremost, so there’s nothing he values more than an efficient kitchen. but he is a little offended that you think he wouldn’t want to be around you for twelve hours straight.
he’s so stuck in his own head that he doesn’t notice you rounding the island until you’re next to him, shoulders brushing. that split second of contact is enough to make him wish he were brave enough to grab you by the hips and pull you in to kiss—
“okay,” you start, pulling him from his thoughts before he can spiral. “before we split the dough, we need to stretch and fold it.”
“that looks easy enough,” he says as he watches you demonstrate the procedure.
“okay big strong man,” you scoff, patting his bicep. if you notice him flexing, you don’t mention it. “don’t whine when your arms are tired after the third or fourth set.”
osamu proceeds to stretch and fold the dough, pretending not to notice the way you watch him. obviously you’re very intent on making sure he follows your instructions, pulling yourself to sit atop the counter, swinging your legs as you tell him,
“you look really good when you’re doing that.”
osamu’s just died. he’s dead, and atsumu’s finally going to be able to say he’s ma’s favourite.
“samu, are you flustered? you’re flustered, aren’t you?” you hop off the counter, poking at his cheek until he catches your hand.
because he’s tired of pretending the two of you are just friends. and if he’s going to be stuck here for 10 more hours, he has to do something about it.
“‘m not flustered,” he mumbles.
you gaze up at him, wide-eyed as he backs you away from the kitchen, finally on the offensive. “h-hey, what are you doing? what about the bread?”
“didn’t come for the bread,” he tells you quietly, pressing a kiss to the inside of your wrist. “i came here for you.”

[Chapter 3] Seeing the World Through Ballistic-Tinted Glasses
The hard water left phantoms of orange streams along the presumably beige shower tile. Most of the time, showers had to be limited to five minutes, ten if you whine about it. Nobody could tell you that you couldn’t indulge in a fifteen this time. It’ll be hard to even think of it as a fifteen-minute shower when you have to punch a button in the wall every 60 seconds to remind the plumbing that it doesn’t have permission to stop.
Cool streams of water stream over your skin. It feels heavenly. The military isn’t famous for its luxury showers, nor is rural Russia. Every second counts, scrubbing your face and body in pace with your five-minute regular showers, permitting a tranquil ten minutes of nothing but the sensation of trickling water across your searing skin. In a way, the overzealous force of the water flowing from the faucet was more of a perk, offering a kneading massage across aching shoulders.
One final mouthful of water left the taste of bitter pennies in your mouth, pushing aside the plastic curtain shielding you from the cooler bathroom air. Pessimism aside, the shower did a fantastic job of cooling your nerves, literally or figuratively. A quick towel dry did the trick, making the standard-issue cargo pants chafe against your skin, only reminding you of the bliss you just stepped out of. At least you got to have your own bra and underwear. That’s a luxury the higher-ups didn’t get to take from you, though the natural tradeoff of function over form meant beige and black were the sole options. Wet hair, mostly brushed, clung to the back of your black tee shirt as the bathroom door clicked shut.
I’ll have to face them again eventually. Just rip the band-aid off and meet them again. At this point, they have every right to shun me. I’ve been nothing but a fucking nuisance. It’s just not meant to be. It’s over before it even started.
Rounding the corner leading from the so-called women’s wing, the common room hosted two of your teammates. Or so it should have been. Craning your neck to see the gym or office, still no one. Maybe what you said was so obscene that they returned to their rooms in shame, or perhaps this is your sign that you can pack up and leave. The shame swirling in your gut grew for a reason beyond your compensation. They’re still assholes, whether they're here or not.
Just off the common room, a flash of movement passed over the circular window on the kitchen door. A deep sigh and you crossed the distance to press your fingertips on the swinging door. Soap and Gaz were under the sterile fluorescent lighting of a 1970s military-issue standard kitchen. Your appearance halted them in the middle of their conversation. The kitchen was a wreak, open sainted wood cabinets revealing shelves that had clearly been rummaged through.
“Hey,” you breathed, rolling on the balls of your feet, “Sorry for freaking out, heh.”
“Yeah, Laswell gave us an earful, but even before that, that’s pretty shitty.” Gaz rested against the linoleum countertop, folding his arms over his ‘SAS’ tee shirt, “She’s got us-”
“I hope ye’ like fuckin’ birthday cake,” Soap interrupted through a slanted grin, doubled over a mixing bowl.
The scene of the kitchen became crystal clear; two grown men, in reality mostly just Soap, were frantically baking a boxed cake at the behest of a disgruntled superior officer. Considering the main tools to work with were tools salvaged from an abandoned bunker, paired with basic MRE equipment. Restaurant-grade single-use butter containers littered the countertops, clearly a last-ditch attempt to make up for the oil requirement. Gaz was trying to dissect a MRE trail mix pack, separating M&M’s from nuts and raisins.
“Don’t sweat it. Getting chirped at is just part of the fun… I’ll consider it water under the bridge if I can return the favour back at you.”
Soap looked up from his whisking as if he’d taken some grave offence.
“Of course, you can. Are you fucking kidding me?”
“Not gonna’ lie, when you talked to us earlier, I was scared shitless. Bloody hell , I thought Canadians were supposed to be nice!” Gaz added, scratching at his stubble.
“Are you ready for this?” he fumbled with the lid of the vanilla extract bottle that had probably been there since the Cold War. “Y’a ready? This is what I like to call the Scottish Touch,” proceeding to deposit a glugging dump of vanilla extract, eliciting a shout from Gaz.
You gave Gaz a raised eyebrow, reaching for and flipping over the boxed cake mix to reveal the instructions, clearly disregarded. It didn’t even call for vanilla. Suddenly, you felt less ashamed of being incompetent while rucking.
“Aye,” Soap swiped the box from your fingers, “it's gonna be the best cake you ever had, better than mom used to make. And you’re gonna fucking like it.”
The cake was a sight to behold. It had finesse in the weirdest locations, delicately displaying evident incompetence. A lumpy, watery topping was the obvious result of applying the icing to a still-hot cake out of the oven. At the same time, there was a delicate, skillfully placed ring of M&M’s arranged in a repeating order on top.
Standing around the kitchen counter again, Soap volunteered to begin cutting into the lumpy cake with a KA-BAR knife- which he immediately licked clean. Responding to your disgusted face as if he forgot he wasn’t the only person in the room.
“Look, clean!” showing his knife proudly, catching Price’s gaze as he pushed open the kitchen door.
Snatching a slice of cake onto a Folger's coffee tub lid, Soap handed you a spoon, clinking others to Gaz and Price. Gaz awkwardly adjusted the fit of his baseball cap, an obvious nervous response to Price’s attempts to hold in his laughter.
“Sergeant, what the fuck is that,” Price bellowed.
“No, no, no, no. Gaz, you’re in this with me. This is a team effort.”
“I want nothing to do with this cake. All I did was the decorations.”
“Excellent job on the decorations, Gaz,” Price added.
“Ya’ haven’t even tried the bloody thing yet! Go on, Lua, try your fucking spectacular cake.” Soap took special care to enunciate his words with a chef’s kiss motion with his fingertips.
“If this kills me, I’m haunting you forever,” you spoke up, smiling widely at Soap’s agitation.
“Shut it.”
You lifted the bite to your lips, cautiously biting the spoon and working the flavours over your tongue. Bone dry but paradoxically greasy. Sweet, courtesy of the non-perishable vanilla cake mix, but that’s about it. Despite being below average for a shitty cake mix, at the very least, it had the delightful pillowy warmth of a freshly baked dessert. Raising your eyes to the audience of grown men patiently expecting your response, you thoroughly and teasingly smacked your lips to unveil your conviction dramatically.
“Tastes like a fuckin’ birthday card.”
“Can’t say I’m familiar with the taste,” Price quipped, timidly placing a piece of the sweet treat into his mouth on the back of his knife. What’s with these men and their knives?
Soap just shook his head, dunking his spoon into the entire body of the cake, correctly assuming that nobody intended to go for seconds. He, too, momentarily pondered the flavour, only to contort his face into a cringe.
“What the fuck did you do, Gaz? It’s fucked!” spat Soap, cheeks still full of cake.
“Me? You’re the one who said we could use water instead of milk, and you said to add all those butter packets!”
A choked laugh barked out of Price.
“It must just be the Scottish touch ,” you quipped, grinning mischievously as you took the opportunity to slip away from the carnage that was certain to follow.
The commotion accelerated in the kitchen as you passed through the common room. A member is missing from your cake-walk, not just Laswell, who had the excuse to stay in the commander’s suite. Another glance at the gym on your way down the hall to your room showed that, to your knowledge, Ghost was nowhere to be found. He was probably starting fires or popping beach balls. He seems like the sort.
Sleep doesn’t come easy. Your mind is in a tortuous replay of the events of the day. Try as you might. Cold shame forbids your conscience from slipping into the rest it desperately needs.
What the fuck is wrong with me? All that drama over some banter with the rookie. I just got here, and I’m already scrapping with people. What reason do they have not to ship me back home at first light? Chuck was right; there will be no more pity parties. No more resting on my laurels.
After hours of consideration and tortuous recaps, relaxation washed over you, and you drifted into a dreamless sleep.

Latest Kitchen Colour Combination Ideas For Your Home
Tumblr media
The food business is one of the most profitable businesses of all time. It never goes out of trend since food is one of man’s basic needs. If you are planning to open a food business, you have plenty of options, such as a café, restaurant, fast food, catering, and more.
However, one feature is common among them all — the commercial kitchen. This is where you would cook the food you will sell. It serves as the main function area of your business since this is where all the food you will be selling comes from.
Planning an efficient modular kitchen design and layout with proper kitchen colour ideas is essential to ensure the space is maximised and the entire flow of your daily operations is smooth. Aside from a good kitchen layout and design, other design elements still need to be considered when designing a commercial kitchen. Read along to learn more about kitchen colour combination ideas:
Warm Wood:
The warmness of natural materials continues to catch attention in 2024, and a perfect wooden touch maintains their everlasting attraction. From rich walnut to light oak, a wooden look pervades a sense of authenticity and cosiness. It does not matter where it is used, whether for flooring, cabinets, or any other place; the natural attraction of wood carries a feel of nature to the kitchens.
Stone-colour:
This type of colours, like shades of taupe, beige, and sand, are very much in trend in 2024. The reason for this is that it imitates the natural attraction for stones. These types of colours add a feel of sophistication. Countertops and modular kitchen cabinets of this colour create an inviting and serene atmosphere, making them a popular option for those seeking an earthy design.
Flooring
The flooring type you use for your kitchen should follow the safety and health regulations to keep your customers safe. For a kitchen cabinets design, choosing a flooring material that does not harbour bacteria and other microorganisms that could contaminate the food is important. Sheet vinyl is one of the most recommended because it is easy to mop and dry and does not have seams where microorganisms can proliferate.
Countertops and Cabinets
You will need adequate storage space to keep your kitchen neat and organised. Countertops, cabinets, and shelves are essential to every commercial kitchen. This is where you will store the fresh food stock and all the ingredients and tools needed for cooking. Be sure to invest in sturdy and durable cabinets and other storage solutions to hold everything you need. It would help if you came with best colours for kitchen cabinets. You could also get custom-made ones from commercial cabinet makers and have a specially designed cabinet for your shop.
Ventilation
It is natural for kitchens to feel warm because cooking produces and emits heat. When designing a commercial kitchen, ensure good ventilation to keep your kitchen staff comfortable while working. A good ventilation system also keeps the place cool and increases your staff’s productivity.
Lighting
Good lighting with the best kitchen cabinet ideas is also an important design feature to consider in a commercial kitchen. Your kitchen staff need adequate light to see everything clearly while they are cooking food and moving around the kitchen. If the lighting is poor, there is a higher risk of accidents. Be sure to invest in good lighting for your kitchen to keep your staff safe and working at their optimum level.
Creating an excellent commercial kitchen takes a lot of time and careful consideration. By considering all those design factors, you can create a design that suits your space and food business well.

There are eating islands with bar stools
Kitchen remodeling in New York city was not always a top priority when it came to home improvement projects. Today, there is no doubt that the kitchen is the center of the house, where people come not only to cook and eat but to socialize and to simply to feel at home. Here are some of the hottest kitchen trends in interior design and renovation that suit city life, and bring home and hearth for those who eat, as well as for those who cook.Go with the Flow:And make your kitchen an integral part of your living area with open spaces. An open kitchen allows everyone to hang out while the pasta sauce is simmering on your stove, while you pay your bills, or while the kids have their after school snack in the kitchen table. When you look out from your kitchen, isn't it nice to see your living area, a glimpse of the dining room, and maybe even a view from your living room window?Continue your flooring from the kitchen to the living room to create a feeling of space. An Island Adventure:Having an island is becoming more and more functional in today's kitchen.
There are eating islands with bar stools, there are cooking islands with a stove top, and very often an oven, and there are preparation islands, equipped with a second sink, a garbage disposal, and lots and lots of drawers for easy access. If you can plan your kitchen with an island in mind you will benefit from beautiful design and a convenient work area that will provide your kitchen with extra space.Clean it Up!One of the hippest trends in kitchen design is imported from Europe. Long, clean lines, kitchen cabinets all at the same height, lots of stainless steel, clean cabinet doors with simple handles, and long stretches of open counter space.
The resulting look is clean, crisp, and modern. You can twist the modern look by curving your angles - make your island half-moon shaped rather than rectangular, or one part of your counter and cabinets flow with a sweeping curve. To complete the look add stainless steel appliances.Culture Shock:A recent trend in kitchen design is to apply an ethnic look and feel to the kitchen, emphasizing China Kitchen Faucet Factory a specific country style: Santa Fe, Tuscan, French modern, Old English, Mexican, Spanish, and so on. The important thing when doing your kitchen cultural, is to pick one theme and stick to it. Don't mix and match too much - Santa Fe styles have more than enough color on their own without mixing in Provencal. These kitchens are usually more "country," than modern, but certainly are homey, and when well designed, a masterpiece to eat in!Steel Sharp:Stainless steel is back, as the lit torch for modern, sleek, new kitchens. High-end kitchens tend to emphasize the shiny (or matte ) steel design in appliances, cabinet fixtures and assorted kitchen accessories.Stainless steel gives your kitchen an extremely clean feeling.
It appears sanitary, and it gives a kitchen that "this is a real cooking place" feeling. Restaurants often use stainless steel for their countertops as well as for their appliances.Colorful Appliances:Some of the bolder home decorators are brining color to their kitchen appliances. It started with the rainbow hues of the KitchenAid mixer, and has more recently been seen on refrigerators, ovens, blenders, and even Aga stoves. This unique touch of color on appliances that used to be white, beige, or steel at best, is bringing even more life to the new center of the house. A red refrigerator, a purple Aga, or even a cheerfully yellow KitchenAid can give your kitchen that extra spicy punch! Source: Free Guest Posting Articles from ArticlesFactory.com

{Tom's Diner, Suzanne Vega}
Tumblr media
Program: Exhaustion blankets you as you work through your shift at the local diner. The same faces tiredly greet you for their usual order. A static hum scratches the wrong side of your brain from the broken radio. Until a newcomer sits at the countertop with captivating blue eyes that make you stop. A brewing countertop crush.
Pairing: Demo Derby! Billy Hargrove x Server, GN! Reader
Genre: Fluff
Warnings: Couple of swears, Petname (Cutie), Not proofed
Length: 1229w
Cover me (P.2) | Camp Upside Down Masterlist
Counselor Note: I started work at a local restaurant, and I am exhausted. But I had a deep sleep dream of dating Billy and then I had to rudely go to work instead of living out my best life in dream world. So now I can't stop thinking about Billy taking care of server reader and stopping in to say hi.
The chime above the door shrills as a new customer enters the trolley car diner. Early morning sun rays break through the blinds and balance out the neon soda pop signs that decorate the wall. Red vinyl stool tops line the counter top just past the abandoned hostess stand. An odd assortment of early bird business men and night owl workers occupy the few booths that line the windows.
“Counter is first come first serve. Choose a booth if one is free,” you call over your shoulder. Your hands balance multiple plates of breakfast and comfort foods from the kitchen window. Turning to face the compact car, a new body fills the diner further to occupancy. His hands move without thought as he pulls out a pack of cigs and a lighter while nodding at you. Golden curls brush against his jaw bone. “Be with you in a sec,” you hum while walking between the hostess stand and counter.
You place the ceramic plates onto the booth tables. The clinking and clattering of cutlery create a mechanical cadence. Appreciative mumbles bring a small smile to your face, but a tingling sense tickles the back of your neck. When you face the counter once more, you notice the soft curls hastily sway.
A mischievous expression sneaks onto your face as you walk behind the counter, and you straighten yourself out as you grab an ashtray from the satn when passing by. “New here,” you point out and plop the plastic tray in front of the stranger.
“Not quite,” the customer hums. His piercing blues eyes take you in with a tired curiosity. “Moved here for part of high school. Now, back again in this hell hole after college”.
You chuckle in commiseration, “Well, that makes two of us. Minus the moving part. Coffee?”
He nods and takes a slow drag from the flickering cigarette. Wandering over to the coffee burners by the kitchen window, you pull the pot while grabbing a mug from the under shelf.
The faint mumbles of radio hosts converse as the silent diner simply exists. Everyone here has somewhere to be. Something to do. This is merely the place to rest before they have to move again. Steaming coffee warms your cheeks as it sloshes into the beige mug when you move back to the newcomer. Sliding the ceramic across the counter, you lean down on one arm and rest your head on your hand.
“Know your order, or are you the mysterious brooding type who only drinks black coffee in dingey diners early in the morning,” you ask with a light tease in your voice.
A half smile grows on his face while he takes a sip of coffee. Cigarette still in hand while ash scatters anywhere but the tray.
“Bill, please,” a gruff voice calls from the stand.
“I’ll let you think on it, ,” you press off the counter and go to take care of the departing patron.
His light laughter flutters in your stomach while you cash out the other customer. Your hands practically work with a mind of their own as they repeat the mundane task. Coins and cash pass hands as you close the drawer. Spare change clatters in the spare coffee mug with some witty tip remark.
Billy watches as you ease through the motions of ring up. He notices how you have a small rip in your diner shirt. How you weave the waist apron strings around your belt. Your cheeks slightly flushed from something. Either from movement or himself, and he bites his lip at the thought.
He turns away with a small laugh of disbelief as he takes another sip of coffee. Fatigue sits heavy on his muscles, but Billy can’t help feel warm inside.
Before the door closes shut, you’re leaning over the countertop once more. “How about it,” you remind him.
“How’s the food here? Not really looking to go home with a greasy stomach,” he asks. Each time he speaks, his blue eyes look directly at you. Holding you captive in his collected gaze.
You shift your legs to ease the growing pain blistering in your feet, “It’s not Enzo’s, but it won’t run your wallet through with mothballs”.
“I’m somehow not sold,” the customer shakes his head and places the mug down. One final drag before he stubs out his cigarette stub, and he reaches for his wallet. Supporting himself with one arm, he reaches into his front pocket as your arms follow the line of veins peeking past his rolled, jean jacket sleeve. Your mouth feels heavy as your eyes trail down to his hand. Long fingers grip onto the edge of the counter, and his knuckles are painted a pretty pink with a few scars littering across them. A small silver band wraps around his middle finger.
“This should cover it,” his voice breaks your attention. When your wide eyes meet his playful look, a blush burns your cheeks. Darting your bashful gaze to the counter, you see a wrinkled twenty dollar bill underneath his tapping fingers.
“Yeah, I’ll grab your change,” you breathe out. Nerves nip at your skin as you go to take the bill.
His hand lightly slams on top before you can pull it free and sends shock up your spine. His fingertips just barely brushing past your own. It’s too fucking early for this.
“All set, cutie,” he smirks. His pointer finger taps your own as he slides the bill underneath your hand.
You swallow hard, “That’s too much for just a coffee and some nice service”.
Still supporting yourself against the countertop, your eyes follow the newcomer as he raises from his seat. His stature blocks the warm light coming into the diner with his broad shoulders. With a look of amusement, he bends down to meet your level before moving forward further.
Hot breath tickles the shell of your ear as his curls brush against your jaw. “Either you pocket it for making this asshole smile this early in the morning, or you put it towards a tab for all the shitty coffees I’ll get this week,” his deep voice hums beside you.
He pulls away and makes his way to the door leaving you in a daze. The faint trill of chimes snaps you out of your haze, and you rush to follow after him. Sliding yourself between the stand and countertop, you quickly call after him, “How am I supposed to keep a tab for an asshole, when I don’t even know their name”. When he stops in the door, you mutter under your breath, “What a dick”.
Blue eyes dart to meet your own when he turns his head over his shoulder to look at you. A smirk sent your way stings your insides.
“Billy Hargrove, cutie,” Billy introduces himself, “And I’m somehow convinced you like that”.
Resting your hip on the countertop, you roll your eyes. “Like what, Billy?”
Billy moves his hand to rest on his belt buckle and raps his knuckle on the lower part of the teasing silver.
“See you later, cutie,” Billy hollers and walks out the door. Excitement bubbles inside him, not even concerned about the long day ahead of him at the derby grounds. Even with the stale coffee, he finds himself trying to figure out when he can see his countertop cutie next.

what the holidays look like with the haikyuu boys
oikawa.
they look like sandy beaches, late sunsets, and tanned skin. festive red and green lights illuminate the bar you sit at with oikawa, the colors bouncing off his face as he looks at the menu. his skin is warm, heated from the setting sun; his arms and shoulders are tan, his pale chest peaking through his loose sleeveless shirt. “it’s strange for december to be so warm,” he murmurs as your finger traces circles on his open palm. “only to you. for everyone else here it’s just another day.” he makes a face and nods, flipping to the next page of the menu. “don’t you miss your home, tooru? japan must be nice and chilly outside right now.” he laughs, finally closing the menu and looking up at you, eyes shimmering. “it’s more than chilly. the roads must have iced over by now. but...” you lean in, anticipating his next words, “but...?” “...but, I am home. I’m here with you.” shy, you scoff, brushing his hand away and rolling your eyes. “oh, shut up.” you look at the beach in front of the restaurant for a while, heart pounding too hard to look back at your grinning boyfriend. from outside your peripheral vision his hand reaches to grab yours again and brings it up to his lips, gently kissing the back of your palm. “I mean it, though,” he whispers, “you really are my home.” the words tickle the hairs on your hand, heating up your ears and cheeks. you look back at him, taking in his glowing demeanor and loving touch, eyes soft. “I know. and you’re mine, tooru.”
tsukishima.
they look like messy hair even in the evening, neither one of you bothering to comb it when you woke up. there’s no fireplace, instead, there’s kei’s laptop on the coffee table, a video of fire playing, gentle wooden crackles filling the warm silence. the lights are off, save for the lamp that barely glows bright enough to be able to read under it. but, it still works. kei’s long legs are outstretched towards the coffee table, feet clad in red fuzzy socks you got him last year. in his left hand is a small book, some stupid small-font history book he’s reading for work; in his right hand a cup of hot chocolate made with hot water, marshmallows floating on top. you sit next to him, hands in lap, legs outstretched across the rest of the couch, eyes closed, only listening to the faux fire sizzling in front of you. “look at you, Mr. Studious Nerd,” you impishly joke, eyes opening to turn and look at his reaction. “shut up or you’ll get coal for christmas.” you pout, “I thought I got a promise ring?” a resolute sigh leaves his lips, eye closing for just a second, “I knew you’d sneak a look at your gift early.” you smile widely, shrugging. smugly, tsukshima goes back to reading, “good thing I got you something else to actually surprise you.” gasping, you latch onto his shoulder, eyes wide. “what?! really? I thought I checked all of the gift-hiding spots, though?” the sound of a page turning followed by a sigh and the closing of a leather-backed book resonates throughout the room. suddenly, you become warmer when a pair of lips brushes against your forehead. an arm wraps around your shoulder to pull you in, closer. a soft, “I love you so much, you dweeb,” rings like merry bells in your ear. under your breath, shy yet curious, you grumble, smile creeping on your face, “you dodged my question, idiot.”
kageyama.
they look like his toned legs extended out on the green couch you bought together, ice packs on each of his thighs and around his shoulders. his sniffle can be heard across the living room, red nose under attack from his cold. you smile, porridge in hand in a little festive bowl that has menorahs painted on the sides. “happy holidays, tobio. hope this helps you feel better.” the black-haired setter scoffs, “the only thing that would make me feel better is for this stupid cold to go away.” “I told you not to practice outside with wet hair. now your muscles hurt and you’re sick. you are simply reaping your consequences,” you reason, snobbish look on your face before it breaks with the roll of his eyes. laughing, you move his legs and sit next to him, spoon in hand. you raise your brows when he pouts and looks away, brows drawn close together. “I know you aren’t acting like a literal toddler right now.” “I don’t need you to feed me!” rolling your eyes, you sigh and place the porridge across the coffee table and stand up. “fine. feed yourself you nimrod.” not even two steps out the room you hear a low grumble come from the couch. turning around, you see kageyama with his head low, mouth barely moving. “can you feed me?” you give him a look, “...please?” smiling, you walk back over. his deep navy blue eyes contrast with the light red of his nose and around his eyes; your heart jumps as you feed him, his eyes trained on you. moments pass, silence covers the room in a safe, secure blanket. when he’s done eating, you place the bowl on the table before shoving kageyama aside to lay next to him. “you’ll get sick,” he says, but his arm is already wrapped around you, “maybe.” another second passes before he speaks again, “I really appreciate you, ya know.” you smile, turning on the tv to the sports channel, “yeah, I know.”
akaashi.
they look like batter-splattered countertops, green and red sprinkles dusting the floor and dangerously close to the stovetop. a warm vanilla scent exudes from the oven, the timer counting down from twelve minutes. akaashi is bent over the burners, stirring beige eggnog with a wooden spoon. unfortunately, it looks lumpy and burned on the edges, somehow. with a sigh of defeat, the wavy-haired man puts a lid on the pot and moves across the galley-way kitchen, leaning on the white counters. you look over from the fridge, amused. “chef’s special doing downhill?” he chuckles weakly, nodding, “you have no idea. I think I burnt it...somehow.” you laugh, closing the refrigerator door with your hip, two glasses of eggnog in your hand, “that’s why I bought these, big man.” he takes the glasses, quirking a brow, “good thinking.” it’s quiet as you lean next to him, both watching the clock tick down closer and closer to zero. in this time you decide to stare at the love of your life, his nose with a slight bump in the middle, his eyelashes grow outward like grass, his tired yet loving eyes, staring straight at you. oh. you blink, turning away. “sorry. got caught in the moment.” akaashi hums from beside you, not missing a beat as his hand comes up, picking something from your hair. he rolls it in his fingers, “looks like dandruff,” he jokes, making you groan and push him away. “I’m just kidding,” you can hear the grin in his voice, you can see it too once he moves to the front line of your sight, forehead coming to rest against yours. gently, he brushes his nose with your own, eyes open only a sliver. “I am so in love with you.” he whispers, voice fragile and warm. heart swelling, you gaze up at him, “I love you, too, keiji.” in the background, the timer beeps thrice, but neither of you really rush to take them out of the oven, you bought extra cookies just in case, anyway.
kenma.
they look like warm fuzzy blankets layered on his full sized bed, the low glow of the led lights on his ceiling shining down on you both. the sound of clicking buttons and occasional ending screen of a failed level play behind you; your own nose buried in your phone, scrolling past posts of friends out and about. kenma’s sock-clad feet rub against each other in lieu of more warmth as his head shrinks back under the protection of the white blanket on top of him. “I’m still cold,” he mutters before scoffing as he fails the same level again for what must be the thousandth time. he tosses the nintendo aside, shifting closer to you. “get another blanket then,” you muse, eyes still trained on your phone. “hmm, don’t wanna,” you feel his cold nose dig into the back of your neck, his arms encircling your waist; a warm breath fans across your nape, and you twitch. laughing, you try to elbow him away, but he whines at your resistance and holds onto you tighter. amused, you click off your phone and shove it under your pillow, turning towards him. you’re met with glowing 24 karat-gold-eyes and messy hair. he stares unblinking at you, and shyness overcomes you as he shamelessly lands his gaze at your lips. nothing can compare to the image of kenma slowly leaning towards you, sunny eyes closing in anticipation of a sweet kiss. a few beats pass with his lips on yours, and he’s in no rush when he pulls away, still staring at you. “you taste like apple fritter.” shy, you place a hand on his chest, “don’t you have a stream in like an hour or something?” “that can wait,” he whispers, body snuggling into yours.
sugawara.
they look like ribbon and tissue paper strewn across the floor of a shared apartment. glitter spilled on the table, scissors open wide in an unsafe position peaking out from under the couch (that has an obscene amount of pillows with different holidays listed on them), tubes of wrapping paper scattered in random corners. you sit opposite of the gray-haired beauty, sticking labels on newly-wrapped presents, each of them addressed to a kid at the orphanage down the street. sugawara’s tongue pokes out of his mouth, nimble thumbs placing tape of the edges of the festive wrapping paper. “you know, koushi, not all of the kids celebrate christmas,” the former setter looks at you quickly, shrugging, “I know! I just wanted to get each of them a gift anyway! wouldn’t you be bummed if I got light up cinderella shoes but you got nothing?” you laugh, shaking your head. it’s silent for a few minutes more, the last few wraps being the most complicated ones, spheres and cylinders. you sit, waiting, gazing at the ugly sweater his kindergarten kids had gotten him (they all chipped in a few dollars (or their parents did)) that was a size too small and incredibly itchy, but he still wore anyway. “hmm, whatcha starin’ at?” his voice broke you from your trance. you stay quiet a few seconds more muttering, “you’ve got such a beautiful heart, koushi.” a blush erupts on your boyfriend’s face, his hands stilling before he smiles softly and continues his job. “only because you’re here by my side. you make me a better person each day.” you bite your lip and play with the nametags in your hand, feeling bad because you know you have the best gift out of all of the kids, and he’s sitting right across from you, failing at wrapping a soccer ball.
tendou.
they look like empty streets in the earliest hours of the morning, a time so early yet late that the birds are asleep, yet twitching in anticipation to be awake. the snow falls gently on the salted sidewalk, fresh and fluffy. a loud laugh breaks through the silence of the neighborhood street, the crunching of snow following suit. red hair dashes from piles of snow to behind lampposts, garbage cans, mailboxes. you wind your arm up, a heftily packed ball of (almost) ice ready in your palm for ammunition. a giggle leaves your lips as tendou grabs his own ball of snow, cheeks bitten pink by the harsh cold. ‘he’s fast, but not fast enough’ you think as you launch the snowball. it flies through the air, hitting the lanky chocolatier in the face with a satisfying crunch. tendou stills, nose red and wet from melted snow as you laugh so hard you almost fall over. a smile slowly climbs his now-numbing face and he walks towards you. your laughter only stops when he’s right in front of you, gazing down at your gleeful figure with love swimming in his eyes like marshmallows in gourmet hot chocolate. the snow rests on top of his buzzed red hair like white icing to red velvet cake. warmth radiates off him, penetrating deep in your heart. “you’re so beautiful,” he mutters, embracing you. you melt in his arms, but the feeling of wet coldness slapping into your back and the sound of crunching snow tell you of his crime. you can only laugh and call his name, “tendou satori, get back here!” and chase his nimble figure down the road back home, where he’ll hug you -- for real, this time.

Out of the Little Grove (5/?)
The path that lay beyond the small dock was muddy, a thick sucking mass that pulled on boots and paws. Hendrick lifted his long legs distastefully and shot a look at Cassiana, who seemed to practically hover above the mess.
The village was only about a block long and two wide, a cluster of beige buildings that had probably once been stained a rich brown but had lost the battle of luster to the relentless northern elements. Planks had been set up that ran the length of the streets to keep the villagers off of the mud, and they stepped onto them gratefully, leaving clumps of glop in their wake.
Mulder looked down at Scully walking next to him, their two dæmons walking side by side a pace or two behind them, their long tails brushing against each other every few steps. Scully’s cheeks were ruddy from the cold, giving her a freshly tumbled look that he very much tried not to think about. It had been torture sleeping next to her, her petite body seemingly made to fit with his like two spoons in a drawer, and when she’d turned on her side in the compact little bunk, the soft, rounded flare of her hip made his head spin. When he’d woken up that morning with her sprawled onto his chest, he’d allowed himself the briefest indulgence and held her close while she slept.
“Where do you want to start?” she asked him, and he gave the village a scan.
There were a few people walking about, each of them giving the two detectives curious looks. The village must not get many visitors.
“A cafe maybe? A general store?”
There was a promising looking building midway up the street they were closest to with rustic signs in the window advertising tea and choclatl. They ducked inside, the anbaric lights dull and buzzing in the small space. There were a few tables at which sat several older men, their clothes and hats thick and as leached of color as the buildings they sat in.
Near the back of the cafe, there was a small till and a breakfast counter with three empty stools and a pastry case that was bare but for one crumbling biscuit. Mulder led Scully to the stools with his hand on the small of her back and they settled down, looking expectantly around for a proprietor. Hendrick and Cass were sitting side by side near the end of the counter facing the door, gazing at the other dæmons who were perched near their humans – a marten, a chickadee and a dung beetle that scuttled up her human’s arm to perch on his shoulder.
From the back of the small restaurant an older woman came, her face stoic and weather beaten. She sidled up to the counter in front of them and leaned forward, looking at them expectantly, but didn’t say a word. Her dæmon, a beaver with a broad flat tail, laid himself down behind the counter with a tired sigh.
“Good morning,” Mulder said cheerfully, which elicited nothing more from her than a flick of her eyes to his unusual dæmon. “A cup of choclatl, please.”
“We’re out,” the woman said, her thick Beking accent making it sound like ver-oot .
“Tea then?” Mulder queried, and the woman nodded gruffly. Scully ordered the same. When the woman set the drinks in front of them a minute later, Mulder tried upping the charm just a touch.
“It’s very good,” he said to the proprietress, nodding at his mug. “It’s nice to have a hot drink on dry land.”
The woman grunted again.
“We’re headed north,” Mulder went on, undeterred. “Do you get many travelers through here?”
“A few,” the woman answered, and began wiping down the countertop with a rag of dubious cleanliness. He saw Scully set down her tea and bring her hands to her lap, a small moue of distaste crossing her face.
Mulder took an enthusiastic slurpy sip.
“Do they all travel by boat?”
The proprietor grunted another affirmative.
“None by air?” he asked innocently, and the woman gave him a look.
“Not many aeronauts this far north,” she said, her S’s sounding like Z’s.
“Oh, I wasn’t thinking of aeronauts,” Mulder said, which drew him a sharp look.
He was about to open his mouth to mention cloud-pine, when the door to the cafe opened sharply, smacking into the wall with a clatter. Mulder and Scully both whirled around, Hendrick and Cass already on their feet, to find a burly dark haired man standing in the doorway, breathing heavily with a riotous look on his face. Behind him was his dæmon, a hunched black vulture, and the same little boy whose dæmon had been pestering Ondima while they were trying to dock their boat.
“Which of you attacked my son?” he thundered in a thick accent, ducking under the lintel and taking several large steps into the space. His dæmon hopped along beside him, the bare, leathered skin of her head wrinkling as she eyed Hendrick and Cassiana suspiciously. The customer with the dung beetle daemon quickly ducked out behind him, but the other two customers sat watching the drama unfold with interest.
“Pyotr!” barked the woman behind the counter, and Mulder got the distinct impression that it wasn’t the first time that Pyotr had been a nuisance in her establishment.
“Sir,” said Scully, stepping forward with an air to mediation, “I assure you that your son wasn’t attacked, it was-”
The man threw a meaty hand in the direction of the door, pointing at his son who was still standing on the steps outside the cafe, looking equal parts nervous and embarrassed. His dæmon had assumed the shape of a mouse and was hiding meekly behind the boy’s left foot.
“His dæmon was attacked, he says. Which of you did it?” At this he swung his eyes to Hendrick and Cass, the latter of whom he eyed suspiciously. His vulture dæmon took two hops forward, tilting her head to look at Cassiana before snapping her beak once. Mulder could feel a ripple of fear and apprehension from Cass. Outside, the boy’s mouse dæmon scampered up his leg and tried to burrow her way into the collar of his cowl-neck sweater.
It wasn’t the first time people had looked at Cassiana – and by extension Mulder – with suspicion. He had never seen or heard of a fossa before his dæmon – well, ‘settled’ wasn’t the right word, as she’d never actually settled, but it was the form she was most comfortable in – and people tended to suspect that which they didn’t fully understand.
Hendrick took a step forward and issued forth a low growl.
“Sir,” Scully said again, this time with the authority of her station in her tone, which seemed to only further irritate the angry father before them.
“I’ll have you and your unnatural dæmon in the stocks!” he hissed, taking another step forward.
On instinct, Mulder reached back for his sidearm but found his belt empty – they had opted to leave their weapons onboard the ship on the advice of Frohike, a move Mulder was quickly regretting as the face of the man before them purpled with rage.
“Pyotr, please!” the woman behind the counter shouted, but no amount of talking would calm him, Mulder knew. He could see the man pull back his arm as if to throw a punch and Mulder leaned forward to block Scully when there was a commotion from their feet.
Hendrick, quick as lightning, had pounced upon the black vulture dæmon and had her pinned to the ground with one large paw, his jaw around the bird’s neck.
The vulture squawked, confirming what Mulder already knew – that Hendrick was merely holding the creature down and not actually hurting her – the bird tried to flap her wings to no effect, and the big man staggered back.
“Let,” he gasped, “let go of us!”
The two remaining customers and the proprietress looked on in horror, their own dæmon’s’ mouths open in shock.
“Scully!” Mulder hissed.
“Hen?” Scully said, her voice wavering.
Hendrick gave one disgusted chuff and let go of the vulture, who rose to her feet and stumbled toward her human with rather more dramatics that Mulder thought was entirely necessary. They all stood in silence for a momentary detente until the woman who ran the cafe gave Mulder and Scully a withering glare and said, her voice low and dangerous:
“Get out.”
They needed no further encouragement, and he threw a bank note on the cafe counter and hustled Scully and their dæmons out of the cafe and past several new onlookers, eschewing the dry planks in the center of the road for a more direct route to the dock, squelching their way toward the ship with all the haste they could muster.
When they jumped aboard, Frohike was on the deck and he eyed the dozen or so villagers who had followed them and were standing on the shore warily.
“We need to go,” Mulder said to their guide and Frohike nodded.
“It would appear so,” he said calmly, before he ducked into the small bridge.
The refueling had luckily already been finished, and the engine roared to life beneath their feet, Langly appearing out of nowhere to untie the ship from the dock’s cleat, throwing the rope to a waiting Ondima, who caught it snappily in her mouth while her human pushed the boat off and hopped back aboard.
There was a rumble from the crowd as Byers shifted the engine into gear and they eased their way into the center of the river, finally growling forward toward easier, calmer points north.
XxX
“Skinner wasn’t kidding when he said you have a knack for attracting the wrong kind of attention,” Frohike said as they were all crowded around the small galley table later that evening. Max was the only one not at the table with everyone else, as he chose to eat with his plate on his lap, sitting in the hatch between the galley and the small engine room. “I believe I cautioned you to act with discretion.”
His tone was a little harsh, but Mulder felt no real malice from him.
“The other kid started it,” Mulder said. Scully gave him a look askance.
“We’re well away by now,” said Captain Byers, reaching for another helping of the evening’s meal. Mia was sitting primly on his shoulder, her tail twitching cheerfully. “All’s well that ends well.”
“Did you find out anything about the witches’ settlement?” asked Langly, his voice nasally and clipped.
“I had just brought up the subject when the, ah, incident occured.”
They had told the crew about their encounter with the angry father, but had left out the part about Hendrick setting himself upon the man’s dæmon – even spoken about after, the act of anyone touching another person’s dæmon was taboo, and while dæmon-to-dæmon contact wasn’t culturally horrific, it was not a part of the story that needed to be shared.
Langly shared a look with Frohike that Mulder couldn’t interpret.
“In the future,” the little man said, “perhaps you and Detective Scully should stay aboard the ship when we dock for resupply.”
After he had helped clean up the meal, Mulder went up onto the deck to find Scully in an intense, quiet conversation with Hendrick. He cleared his throat and Scully looked at him and moved to the side of the ship to look out at where the sun’s last rays were sweeping over the tops of the trees.
“I never thanked Hendrick for stepping in today to help,” he said to her, moving to stand next to her. The clouds above them were a rich, deep purple, but those near the horizon were an unruly pink and orange and red that reminded Mulder of Scully’s hair.
“Cass did,” Scully said quietly.
Mulder looked toward his dæmon, who had settled next to Hendrick, their heads bent, talking to each other in low, quiet voices.
“Hen thinks I should tell you that I am having trouble sleeping here,” Scully went on, her eyes glued to the horizon.
“I’m snoring, aren’t I?” Mulder said, lighthearted.
“It’s definitely not that,” she replied, finally turning to look at him. There was an earnest hope in her eyes, something nameless that made his stomach lurch with breathless anticipation.
“Mulder, I…” she started, but after a moment she seemed to lose her nerve and reached forward to grab onto the ship’s railing.
The smoke from the Gulpie’s engine sunk to the surface of the river, wafting downstream with the current. From below them a sundown chill crept up the sides of the boat and slipped into their boots. Scully shifted on her feet and he caught her profile against the water, diaphanous in the golden hour light, spectral, on the earth but not of it. It hurt just to look at her.
The engine churned beneath them, the bow pointed north, and Mulder thought about where they’d been… where they were going. Scully shivered and before either one of them registered what was happening he pulled her into his side.
“How do you always stay so warm?” she asked, leaning into him after a hesitant moment.
“It was colder where I grew up. You get hardened to it.”
“Tell me about Oxford,” she said, and he didn’t correct her. He hadn’t gone to live with his father until he was eight.
“It’s beautiful. Ancient in a way that New Denmark never will be. My favorite place there was the botanic garden at the university. It holds wonders.”
He told her about the lily pond, about the exotic specimens brought in from various expeditions from all points of the world, about the arboretum and how he’d climbed a tree there once and taken a beating from a university guard for his trouble, Cass flitting about the guard’s head in the form of a screeching woodpecker.
“It sounds idyllic,” she said, thunking her head back to rest on his shoulder. He tightened his grip on her and leaned down to take a quick whiff of her hair, feeling serenely complicit, playing a dangerous game.
“It had its moments. Dad’s dæmon Vissa kept a sharp eye on us. Especially after adolescence.”
“I understand why.” Scully put a light hand on his arm. “You know, you don’t talk about your father much.”
“When everyone thinks you got where you are because of nepotism, you tend to keep the family talk to a minimum.”
“How did he end up at the Magisterium?”
“Vissa is a praying mantis, he likes to joke that it was fate.”
“Is he a Bishop?” Scully asked.
“He’s not in the clergy,” Mulder said, not explaining any further.
There was a thump from behind them, and Langly came slouching out onto the deck from below, Ondima trotting at his heels, her white bushy tail a stark contrast to the grunge of the boat. The sun was fully down now and the sky was a purple mass, stars winking on from every part of the sky. Scully leaned away from Mulder as Langly crossed behind them.
“Going to moor for the night,” he explained, heading for the bow.
“Need any help?” Mulder offered.
“Sure,” Langly said, and directed him about. When they’d finished, Mulder turned back to where Scully had been standing, but she’d already gone below.

domestic design
I’ve been thinking a lot about domesticity and what it means to live a life- a meaningful one, a revolutionary one, maybe even a significant one. An aesthetic element of two would be nice (anything but those staid eames chairs and the grey and beige shiplap but make it mid century modern target style).
Last weekend I drove about halfway to San Francisco taking the highways instead of going on the inner roads because google says exposure therapy can work sometimes. The most effective treatment, it turns out, is accepting the inevitable and inherent risk of being human, even if it comes at the hands of someone cutting you off mid merge on highways straight from hell. I have to remind myself it’s okay if I die. Even if it’s on my way to pick up some accent chairs.
I don’t know how I feel about the accent chairs quite yet because I don’t have a rug yet to compare it to and the home design podcasts I listen to say that a rug (and not the paint color) is what ties a room together. I tried to do my civic duty and went to the local rug store first where the lovely Persian owner tried to asses what we needed, which turned out to be aspirational expensive distressed traditional rugs. It’s aspirational because we weren’t in her typical income bracket yet. But I spent some time marveling over the hand woven intricate Afghan rugs and tapestries anyway and dreamed of a room with fringed wall hangings and hand blown glass lamps and tiny coffee tables tucked away in sunny corners. Plants are welcome as long I’m not their primary caretaker- living things bring their own anxiety.
I’ve been agonizing over the rug in the back of my head, sifting through hundreds of pictures and racks trying to find the holy grail. It’s funny but the performance of tasteful domesticity and conveyance of tempered elegance and cultural knowledge still matters. I think there’s merit to creating a place that matters to you, that is beautiful and peaceful and brings you clarity: a room of one’s own to bicker and create and lounge and laugh. Perhaps it’s the isolation of the last two years that have highlighted the importance of what our places say about us, especially as our social circles have trickled down. At its most basic, reveling in domestic frivolity has been a nice escape.
When we were in Austin a few weeks for a friend’s wedding, we all went out to eat at a restaurant that really only tastes good in retrospect. We were all sitting at a table and soon afterwards, another group of young men from the wedding showed up and sat behind us. Our friend looked at them and laughed. We were there last year and now we’re at the married table, he pointed out and I gazed down the table and it was true. All of us in our wedding finery, each couple across from the other, paying respect to what’s expected of us. I thought of my mother then and her insistence I wear gold on my hands as a visual marker of my success and I saw myself growing smaller and rounder, portly, jowled, thinking of ways to set the table. It was dismaying, against my better judgment. These ways of thinking about aging, about femininity, beauty, domesticity are so deeply embedded that though I’ve read and believe everything to the contrary (aging naturally not being a death sentence, acting according to what you’re expected to do is not necessarily hypocritical, assimilation into the version of domesticity that’s natural to a hetero-capitalist state does not mean you’re doomed to live out your version of revolutionary road ) it was still depressing. I was exactly where I needed to be, but not where I expected to be.
There have been a spate of books and articles about (mainly) middle class white women leaving their marriages and tidy little houses in the suburbs, ostensibly because their countertops were granite instead of quartz but also because their version of motherhood and wife-hood became overwhelming. I’m trying to parse through my understanding of that process and what I think is finding a lack of purpose and meaning behind their roles as wives and mothers (which is of course the history of hetero capitalism enacting its weight on them) and what they’re attempting to do next. The rudimentary first wave feminist adjacent analysis is to congratulate them for their independence, their quite literal divorce from their middle class material lives. But if the solution is move to the big city to find your own version of independence, what does that mean? What is your revolution accomplishing if you’re simply searching for the next thing to consume and give you a sense of fullness until of course you’re emptied again? What does our individuality mean in the overwhelming insignificance of it all? I don’t have the answers but I think for those who choose to go down these paths, maybe part of it lies in the semi- adoption of our roles- we try not to let them consume or define us even as we act out the roles as they’re intended.

Hotel Maalot in Rome
5 Nov 2020
Hotel Maalot
Design: RPM PROGET
Location: Via delle Muratte, 78, 00187 Roma RM, Italy
In the heart of Rome there is a prestigious building overlooking Via delle Muratte, along the fascinating path connecting the Pantheon with the Parliament and the Trevi Fountain, which boasts the record as the busiest pedestrian area in Europe. Formerly called ‘The street of artists’, it’s where the painters’ ateliers lived together with antique dealers’ shops and quality craftsmanship workshops.
In this very particular context, RPM Proget, the Roman studio with a consolidated know-how in the design and realization of food spaces, has carried out an important project for a five-star luxury premise, the Maalot Hotel, which is now being completed with forecasted opening December 2020. The owner is an Argentine entrepreneur who already owns other successful hotels.
The building housing the Maalot Hotel is on four floors for about 3,000 square meters and looks like an elegant ‘palazzo’ of the 19th century where, between 1828 and 1837, the great composer Gaetano Donizetti, author of operas such as the ‘Elisir d’amore’ and ‘Don Pasquale’, wrote ‘Il Furioso di San Domingo’ and ‘Torquato Tasso’ within these walls.
The building is located near another important location realized by RPM Proget, the Baccano restaurant, a reference point for Roman restaurants and a well-known destination for a large gourmet clientele.
British Style In Rome The Maalot Hotel features a truly ‘British’ style and recalls the atmospheres of an English residence from various aspects: the fabric wallcoverings, the carpet flooring, the furnishings, the lamps and the colours of the 30 rooms, each one different from the other. This outstanding personality is completed with details such as the choice of physical keys instead of magnetic cards to create the feeling of a manor, rather than a hotel.
Precisely for this reason, comfort is at the core of the project, from the rooms to the common areas, from the soft textiles to the smooth and harmoniously mixed colours.
Whilst a rather common situation abroad, in Rome it’s quite unusual to enter the restaurant area to access the hotel rooms: at the Maalot Hotel, a hostess recognizes the guests, accompanying them to the table if they have booked at the restaurant, or addressing them to the hotel area, if guests want to retire to their room.
Rooms The rooms are classified according to useful surface, from the classic 16 square meters with double bed to those between 25 and 27 square meters, from rooms with living area to more important spaces in the form of mini-apartments with a small living room and a library, or with spectacular stone fireplaces.
A common feature of the rooms is the presence of a walk-in closet made-to-measure in Daniela walnut wood with an area for hangers and shoe racks and one for the chest of drawers with the refrigerator and a shelf for the built-in safe inside.
Bathroom are divided into two separate areas covered in open-scrub arabesque Calacatta marble, like the countertop of the washbasins. The two rooms in the attic feature precious Portoro marbles with black background and gold veins giving a refined and relaxing atmosphere, also due to the Daniela wood, a very blond walnut used in the bathroom, that blends with Portoro marble and its black and gold background.
Special attention has been paid to the textiles in the rooms, where fine fabrics cover the walls with a harmony of colours pleasantly coordinated with other textile elements such as the curtains, the padded headboards and the upholstered chairs, armchairs and sofas. A carpet in different colours different from room to room has been used for flooring.
Wherever I Lay My Hat… But that’s not enough: the paintings inside the rooms are inspired by a song by Marvin Gaye: ‘Wherever I lay my hat, that’s my home’. This concept is widespread in the interiors to communicate the idea of being at home and for this reason, the hat is the main actor of the graphic illustration inside the rooms, resulting in a coherent story that also continues in the restaurant, to follow the theme of the ‘art gallery’ in line with the artistic soul of via delle Muratte.
The Restaurant All the aspects that have inspired the genesis of this noteworthy work by RPM Proget ideally converge in the design of the restaurant, a location with about 60 seats designed for a niche clientele.
The choice of colours has been oriented towards soft tones, where greens and beiges prevail, with lush plants that descend from a closed skylight, while the flooring is made up of an aged oak parquet in a warm honey tone.
This space expresses the ‘green’ vision that never fails in RPM Proget’s works and that has found here the right conditions to create a unique and evocative environment and a fully immersive experience that blends historical charm and elegance.
The restaurant is like a living room surrounded by green curtains, a secret garden in the heart of Rome. The restaurant rooms are designed as an elegant art gallery where painters exhibit their evocative paintings, as it happened when this was the ‘street of artists’.
Exploring the main restaurant room and the lounge, where the cocktail counter is located, you almost accidentally run into the reception, housed in a refined study showcasing a rich selection of books available to guests.
Light And Sound Lighting is a point of pride in this project, because each single lamp in the bedrooms (table lamps, reading lamps, frame lamps, abat-jour) and in the common areas, was designed by RPM Proget in a full creative expression and on own design: particularly impressive is the chandelier in the restaurant which is 180 cm width by 180 cm high.
The theme of acoustics is about the whole project, having seen an overall structural intervention both on the floorings and on the walls with the application of gypsum fiber and Silent Diamond panels that reduce noise. The idea of ‘dressing the rooms in fabric’ further contributes to lower the noise, instinctively inviting to keep the volume of voice down: the carpet floor and the padded fabric coverings create a muffled effect that leads to the maximum soundproofing effect.
All fabrics are fireproof in compliance with the standards. To overcome the limited variety of colours and decorative motifs of this type of product, custom-made fabrics from Italian manufacturers have been used, taking advantage of charming and original decorations combined with the requested flame-retardant performance.
To Stay In Shape The hotel offers a gym of almost 100 square meters. Whilst many hotels offer classic equipment and anonymous spaces, a ‘furnished’ gym has been created here with mirrors and ebonized wood panelling giving an effect of great comfort. An ‘Omnia’ machine has been installed in collaboration with Tecnogym, a mix of free body and tools introducing a new philosophy that makes the environment fresh and exciting.
The Global Project Maalot is the first experience of ‘global hotel project’ made by the studio’s team, who took care of the whole design from the basement hosting the bathrooms and the gym to the penthouse on the sixth floor. In this hotel, each item is the result of a creative process by RPM Proget, initially not even foreseen, but which has grown more and more, until coming to involve the frames of the paintings.
