sometimes I wonder how many people on this website would have also been on the "digital art isn't real art" side of the argument back in the 2000s
#my diary#idk man it's been my experience that blaming the end user for using a tool is just not the move you think it is#skepticism and criticism for the corporate forces behind those tools and the consequences of their proliferation in society? sure#there was a very valid concern and debate about how hard it was to tell the difference between real and photoshopped images once too#and there are additional perfectly valid concerns about how genAI (I'm subtweeting about genAI if that wasn't clear) trains its models#and about the amount of resources it uses. all genuine concerns that my allegories don't really cover neatly here#but like#I got better things to do than be mad at some incel for generating pics of his imaginary anime girlfriend to jerk off to#and completely writing generative AI off as a useless tool that is 100% evil in 100% use cases just makes you look immature and solipsistic#for the record I'm speaking as someone who was on the 'digital art isn't real art' side of the argument in the 2000s#you know what my main hobby is now? digital art#the toothpaste isn't going back into the tube. the technology exists#I would rather see people put their energy to making sure those tools benefit humans instead of simply exploiting them#and I find this torch-and-pitchfork approach to AI both concerning#and as just yet another manifestation of the growing reactionary fanaticism that gave us trump#and all the other populist authoritarians
