@nothingiswrongwithyourarmrests it's not just you! I also got the impression that Hermione's narrative problem was that she was trying to help an oppressed population as an outsider to the society that was doing the oppressing, imposing her own morality without trying to understand the nuances of the context (now that I've written that out I realise I could probably have just said "the white saviour problem")
But then - in my reading of it, anyway - the solution turned out not to be "if you want to help an oppressed population, try talking and listening to them so you can find out how to be most effective" but rather "do not interfere with the natural order of things". I don't know if it's Rowling's shitty attitudes or shitty world building but either way it was disappointing.
In my personal retcon of the series the house-elves have a drive to work (possibly a magical compulsion that nobody can yet figure out how to undo) analogous to working dogs - you might think you're doing them a favour by giving them a day off, but it just gives them such bad anxiety and choice paralysis that you're likely to come home to find that all your potion ingredients have been organised by colour and seed size and the elves are now up on the roof optimising your wizarding radio reception.
I know I'm a bit late to saying this but frankly if I found out a secret society of magic-users were just playing nonsense sports and making up slurs for the rest of us instead of helping us out with famines or leukemia I think I'd apply for a job with my local witch hunters
#no insult is intended by comparison to working dogs#they are amazing i am in awe of their skills#i wish i had that kind of drive#instead of just the neuroses#and also it's really hard to talk about house elves without saying things that could easily be mistaken for deliberate ableism#i am very tired please read me charitably#potter discourse#the house elf problem#i feel like i ought to apologise for the crimes of my ancestral country here too

What's exactly is an Elf-Lord? I assume that the uncapitalized version is just an elf who holds the title of a Lord.
I don't consider myself any sort of expert on Tolkien's Legendarium (I mean, I haven't even read any of the Unfinished Tales yet, just for baseline starters!) so I am not a good choice to ask this of, tbh. And if you're asking specifically in regards to the way I used it in my fic The Names of My Fathers (which I'm guessing is the case, because I can't think what else I've done or posted recently that involves that particular term; if I'm off-base please feel free to provide more context!) then I should caution you that that was actually the first story I started working on during my recent re-obsession with LotR, and I was sooooo rusty on my Tolkien Canon then that I fucked-up the timeline of the Quenya Ban, for fuck's sake—something I definitely knew better about! So, take the following with an entire shaker of salt is what I'm saying.
Anyway. Elf-lord is a term that crops-up in Tolkien's work (I count seventeen uses in LotR but that's at a quick glance; I may be missing some), but not one that I've ever seen a clear definition on. It seems to be one of those things that falls under a "you know it when you see it" banner. An Elf-lord is an elf of particular power, might, or prominence; someone who can command, whether that be by the strength of their political position, their lineage, or simply their raw power. Someone whom others respect, and whose words carry weight.
Lord, of course, gets used as a term of rank; one could probably assume that any Elf who is called a Lord at any point (Celeborn, for instance) could likewise be described as an Elf-lord—but I don't think it's just a case of "you have x rank, congrats you're an Elf-lord now."
Glorfindel is repeatedly called an Elf-lord, even though he never ruled any lands. He is described to Frodo as being of "a house of princes," so one might claim on those grounds that it's a rank-thing only—but his status as an Elf-lord is also referenced explicitly in regards to the Ringwraiths being "dismayed" to see "an Elf-lord revealed in his wrath," so I think there's a more-than-just-political power aspect to it as well. It's not just about rank; it's also stature, majesty. Power. Any Elf who has a lordship over land or people would be called Lord [name], but would he be called an Elf-lord if he wasn't also mighty on his own merits? Hard to say. (Of course, the fact that those who wield command in Tolkien's stories are almost always people who are mighty, conveniently, muddies those waters a little; we've got aspects of that whole "divine right" thing going on, in a story written by an Englishman! Shocking I know!)
(If you're wondering why I'm only referencing LotR and not the Silmarillion, despite there being way more Elf-lords in the latter, it's because I don't know the Silm off the top of my head well enough to go snag quotes and references without having to actually page through it. Sorry. But we're talking Third/Fourth Age stuff anyway if we're talking about the fic I think we are, so let's say I'm sticking to topically appropriate references rather than being lazy. Shh.)
Anyway. "Elf-lord" also gets used as a comparison term to indicate that someone is particularly great in a particularly elvish way. For instance, after Galadriel arrays him in finery, Aragorn is described like this: "Then more than any king of Men he appeared, and seemed rather an Elf-lord from the Isles of the West." High praise, indeed, and to me the way it's used in that section of the Appendixes is being done to indicate that he is worthy of Arwen, for all that he's a mere mortal. "Not an Elf-lord, but really close! honest!" is basically how it comes off, to me. Likewise Elladan and Elrohir are said to be "fair and gallant as elven-lords." Ergo they do not quite rank the term themselves, because they are peredhil like their father rather than elves, but they are considered to possess comparable greatness.
Conversely, I'm assuming it's not a term that is simply a fancy way of saying elf, because it only seems to be used for elves who merit greater regard than the average. The term is used more than once during the Council of Elrond in reference to some of the elves gathered there to discuss the fate of the Ring in a general way ("What of the Three Tings of the Elves? Very mighty Rings, it is said. Do not the Elf-lords keep them?...I see Elf-lords here. Will they not say?") but not in such a general way as to be referring to just any elves; it seems evident to me that Glóin is using the term to specifically indicate elves of greater-than-average position or might, rather than simply talking about elves as a whole people, although he doesn't specify anyone in particular (since it's a secret who has the Three and he does not know).
Legolas is (unless I've missed an instance somewhere) never referred to as an Elf-lord. When Elrond is discussing who to send with the Fellowship, Gandalf says, "Even if you choose for us an Elf-lord, such as Glorfindel, he could not storm the Dark Tower..." and he says this after Legolas has already been named to the Fellowship as their elvish representative; ergo while once again the text doesn't explicitly state that Legolas doesn't qualify as an Elf-lord, I think it's fair to infer that he isn't considered one; neither Elrond nor Gandalf, at least, think of him an Elf-lord, because they wouldn't have been talking about Glorfindel being an Elf-lord who could theoretically be sent along if the Fellowship already had one Elf-lord in their number.
Indeed, in Appendix E there is a sentence that specifically delineates Elves and Elf-lords as separate, distinct terms: "...the tongue of all those Elves and Elf-lords that appear in this history," Tolkien writes.
So that's how I used it: as not necessarily a specific rank that someone can be given or earn or be appointed to, but as a way of signifying extra respect and might. Hence Legolas's not-exactly-joke that Oropher would probably have called himself an Elf-lord, but that none of the other Elf-lords were likely to have agreed with his claiming the title. Now technically as a king, Oropher would qualify as an Elf-lord...but in that part of the story, I wanted to lean into the lingering bitterness that Mirkwood feels about the disdainful way they feel they were treated during the Last Alliance, and the high price they paid because of it. So, would the Elf-lords who marched to war with Gil-galad have ranked Oropher as one of them, just because he had a bunch of scruffy archers under his command? I mean, they very well might have, even if solely as a gesture of respect—a courtesy title, so to speak. But Legolas wasn't there, so he's just going off the vibes that have endured, and in my take on Green/Mirkwood those vibes are not exactly enthusiastic towards the other elves of Middle-earth; the ones that they think looked down on them and didn't stand by them and left them to fight alone against the Shadow for so long.
Legolas does use the term to refer to his father near the end of the book, when talking about how he's going to ask Thranduil to let him bring some elves from Mirkwood to help spruce-up Minas Tirith; but he says it as "my Elven-lord," rather than just saying "and Thranduil, an Elf-Lord who blah blah..." so it seems in this case to be more about the fact that Thranduil has the rank of a lord over Legolas, being king of Mirkwood, and less that he's an Elf-lord, specifically. Of course, as a king, Thranduil would likely merit the term—but is it one that non-Mirkwood elves would use for their "more dangerous, less wise" kinsmen sitting out there in the half-feral spider-tree kingdom? Hmmm, maybe; he is a king, even if he's not going around tearing down walls with his willpower and chasing the Nazgl out of Dol Guldur by force of his shiny presence alone...but I think it also probably depends on the situation. If we were talking about "mighty Elf-lords" like Galadriel and Glorfindel? Maybe not so much. If it were a discussion of various elven leaders, including him on behalf of Green/Mirkwood, then he'd have a better shot.
So that's how I see it, anyway. As with any term without a precise definition, there's wiggle-room to interpret it in different ways, clearly. You may look at it completely differently, and that's fine! But you asked for my definition, so there you go.
Oh, also re: capitalization...yeah, that's just called me being inconsistent with capitalization, because Tolkien capitalizes pretty much EVERYTHING and I...don't. I put it down to reading too much other fantasy that doesn't capitalize every use of Elf and Dwarf, and the inconsistency of species capitalization across spec-fic in general. I should capitalize it in Tolkienian fanfiction, because the source material does; but that doesn't come naturally to me when I write those words (as you'll notice when you read this post), so sometimes I remember to do it and sometimes I don't. Sorry for the confusion!
*I invite anyone who knows more about Tolkien minutia to chime-in with their greater knowledge on the Elf-lords subject btw!

Yes, you are correct I was talking about trolls, goblins as well as other racially coded monsters like orcs and tauren on the subject of Warcraft and racism.
Basically Warcraft has gotten worse with the "POC coded monsters are evil stuff", whilst keeping or sometimes even increasing the racial coding.
As I mentioned in my previous post, I can’t speak to any developments post-Shadowlands because I haven’t played the game since then. However, I don’t think Warcraft can even fix the problem any time soon.
Warcraft lore has a wide array of races, but a limited number of influential cultures. The key issue is that the human race is young, limited in population, and predominantly white. They were creations of the Titans (titan-forged) that succumbed to the Curse of Flesh (vrykul) and then deformed, small children (human) were sent off from Northrend to populate other continents, Almost all the significant human characters are light-skinned, blonde, and/or blue-eyed. It’s clearly based on, but not identical to, Norse mythology. That also suggests that of course they all look alike when that wasn’t very long ago.
However, the recent history cements them in that position. There are barely any important human NPCs of color. The leaders of Stormwind, Lordaeron, and Kul Tiras were all blonde, blue-eyed, and light-skinned. The noble houses of each of those settlements have similar features. When those are the people in power for stories about trying to prevent the end of the world, well, of course all the humans the players meet are white.
Unfortunately, they also have a habit of adding non-human races with traits of non-white cultures, which makes everything worse. All humans are white is ethnocentrism, and all POC are monsters is white supremacy. It’s a frustrating thing, but there is no way to remedy it without switching to a new game or restarting the story. No retcon is going to fix that Tauren are based on Native American stereotypes, that Pandaren are Chinese stereotypes, etc.
Hell, the good, untainted highborne elves allied with humans have blue eyes and the corrupted elves have tainted fel or void skin. The night elves were lower class and have blue/green skin. The Nightborne have dark blue skin and are generally mixed class, but also isolationist and addicted to mana. The problem is that the default/good groups always have light skin, light hair, and blue eyes—so adding complex POC-coded populations is always going to be compared to that default.
All the options are unsavory.
Add POC humans with a different biological origin: oh god, that is taking the race essentialism of WoW to the worst extreme. No.
Add POC humans from a previously undiscovered culture and continent: this could be done well, but we all know they will be featured for one expansion and then never used or referenced again. This is the checkbox “we added neutral POC rep” option.
Add meaningful POC humans into the heart of the story: we know how this ends. WoW writers suck even when they aren’t racist. We know this is gong to end up with a Anduin story (the woobie), a Thrall story (POC that suffered racism and learned to love white people anyway), or a Sylvanas story (morally gray until we need a villain and then we’ll give the weakest handjob of a redemption). That’s without getting to the “but where did they come from?” question.
That said, this isn’t really worse than where they were before. It’s about the same. Like, there has been marginal improvement in that not every human in a cut scene is white, there are customization options for PCs to appear non-white, and humans aren’t the shining beacon of goodness in a world filled with monsters.
But it’s hard to say WoW got worse. The bioessentialism was already there. The white supremacy was blatant. Treating non-white cultures as useful material for side stories was always the vibe. Maybe it’s just a part of getting old, but it doesn’t cause me outrage to see a 20 year old game continue to be racist. It’s an old game—of course it’s racist.
It’s an entirely different matter when a new game does it. WotC gets to reinvent D&D lore with new settings and new editions, so there’s no excuse for carrying racist bullshit forward from prior books. There’s no reason for humans to have European-centric cultures, names, histories, etc. The change from “race” to “species” shows that the management either missed the point of or didn’t care about complaints about bio essentialism. It shows that the decision makers at WotC just do not care enough to change that. It doesn’t cost them enough money to matter.
In the end, it’s just going to keep happening. WoW dominates MMORPGs, and D&D dominates TTRPGs. The games do have positive facets, they’re fun ways to be social, and people prioritize those over being anti-racist. It doesn’t really matter if either of them gets worse or if one is worse than the other. They’re just reflections of how white supremacy is still the norm—they just aren’t as openly proud about that fact.

bee knew what it was like to have a parent with high expectations, nothing you ever did was quite good enough. her father was like that...when he actually gave her attention that is but she can't imagine what it's like having a parent like that coming from an already privileged family, when you already have everything you'd think they'd ease up a little more instead of tearing you down cause it's hard for her to imagine regulus could do anything wrong.
never having to cook your own meals or clean the home you lived in seemed a bit foreign to bee, growing up she used to wake up early in the mornings to gather items from her family garden to sell just so her family could have meals or cleaning the house every sunday to make sure it was spotless, they never had help or someone to do it for them. "so you have a house elf I'm assuming?" she asks curiously. bee had never been a fan of the whole idea of house elves mostly do to the way wizards tended to treat them. she nods at his words about his brother, she's read about sirius black before. "I'm sorry to hear about your brother, it must be hard knowing your own flesh and blood is trapped in such a horrible place. I don't know what I would do if cedric wasn't here." it's the truth, though most would probably have terrible things to say about the eldest black but she didn't see a need for it. "well you are the most lovely prince I've ever met if that helps." she giggles softly.
"well that's unfortunate, I love a beautiful garden...i miss my garden. dirigible plums, chomping cabbages, grapes and the most delicious potatoes you'll ever taste. they were some of my best friends back at home." she reminisces about the first time she grew her own plant, they were only peas but it was one of the happiest days of her life. "I'm so excited for herbology class I hear we get to work with venomous tentacula's in first year! they're such a beautiful plant even though most people are absolutely terrified of them."
she's rather taken aback by his question, gaze falling for a moment "oh..." she says gently as she actually finds herself trying to think about it for a moment. no one's ever asked her that kind of question before, she figures that they never really cared. "I guess so, I mean it's just in my household it's usually my brother who is the star of the show, quidditch seeker, prefect, future quidditch champion. he's like my father's pride and joy, and not that I blame him. if you met cedric you'd probably love him too...it's just he takes up a lot of space and there's not enough room in my father's eyes. but that's okay, I'm used to it." she forces a sad smile, not wanting to speak I'll of her father.
the things that made her most happy was talking about newt and her own dreams of saving the beautiful most creatures who needed her, it felt like it'd been awhile since she felt as though she was able to talk about it. "I'm sorry...shoot." she laughs a bit at herself she's really apologizing for apologizing. she frowns a bit at his words when he talks about his mother, she sounded like an awful lady, so much hate in her heart. bee's eyes flicker towards his gaze as she frowns. "people like that are so hateful, our world wouldn't exist without the creatures that inhabit it and dragon's especially are very clean creatures and puffskien hair has magical properties they use in laughing potions...plus their freakin adorable." she muses happily wishing she could meet one sometime soon. "but if you like it so much then I'll be happy to talk to you more about whatever creatures you'd like to what of, my brain is like one big beast library."
she listens when he explains what book it was, it both warms and breaks her heart a little to imagine a baby regulus so excited to learn of dragons just for his selfish mother to literally rip his dreams from his hands and burn it away but it also gives her an idea. pulling her satchel from her hip she opens it up to look inside, before pulling out a golden book. "my parents got me this book for my 13th birthday and I've read it over a thousand times...my favorite is the swedish short-snout, the breathe blue flames and are known to have harmed the least amount of humans of the other species..." she smiles softly before handing the book over to the boy. "here, you keep it. just promise you'll remember me when you're a world renowned dragonologist changing the world."
she understands what it's like to want your parents' approval but what she could never do is give up on the things she wants most to please someone else. "my father doesn't approve of my dreams either, he says it's too dangerous and it's not exactly a job that gives you fame and riches unless you're newt scamander but...it's also my dream and I don't think you should live your life based on what other people want for you. if your mother truly loves you she'll understand your dreams even if it doesn't make her happy as long as it makes you happy that's all that matters."
her cheeks flush a bright shade of pink at his next words, fingers running through her auburn curls as she bites down on her lower lip. "n-no!" she says all too quickly. "I mean that's n-not what I meant I...I don't mind you flirting with me, I just...never really done this before? unless you count the daydreams I had about princes from story books." but this was a real life prince one in which was very bluntly telling her that he wanted to flirt with her. "I just mean to say I like that you flirt with me, sorry if I'm bad at doing it in return."
before she can continue to put her foot in her mouth she shoves the cauldron cake in her mouth, getting some of it on her lips as she saviors the tastey treat. she wants to feel bad that regulus had gone out of his way for her but it's also hard to resist her favorite chocolatety snack and after all he tells her wanted to as he strokes the fur of a very relaxed niffler.
bee tries not to choke on the cake when he goes on to compliment her or at the least what she thinks is a compliment because he talks about wanting to pinch her cheeks. "you wouldn't think I'd look a bit silly with squirrel cheeks?" she teases, puffing out her cheeks to make them look fatter as she smiles. "oh I've been told I give the best hugs, by my mom of course. I have this thing where I'm a bit of a chronic hugger...maybe you'll get to find out if you'd like."
He doesn’t expect her to call him perfect, but maybe she’s exaggerating a bit to tease him. Either way, it’s flattering when she herself is perfection sitting in front of him, from her pretty face to how kind she is. She doesn’t seem to have any judgements towards him at all, even though he would expect her to. Everyone knows his family’s views on blood status after all, and Bee definitely isn’t pureblood. “Strict doesn’t begin to cover it, with her.” She’s the most intense woman Regulus has ever known, from her beliefs to her expectations. Even loving her, he can acknowledge that. Maybe it’s why he’s so competitive, now– it had been ingrained into him to always be the best, so he could be loved.
He smiles when she disagrees, insisting he seems like a prince with the world at his feet. “I suppose. I can buy whatever I want, within reason… And I’ve never had to cook my own meals, or clean my own home. My surname has a lot of influence, but maybe less so than other families since my brother went to Azkaban. There are the drawbacks, though… like my mother.” He smiles up at her a little, humorously. He shouldn’t speak ill of her (Kreacher would have a fit) but this is the first time he’s felt he could be honest. “The most family time I get is a good lecture and when they use me as a show pony for their high-end pureblood parties. I guess everyone at those parties thinks I’m a prince too.” But he doesn’t like the way they treat him, or how they say it. Not how he likes when Bee does.
“And we do have a garden, but I don’t think it’s what you’re picturing… It’s less for growing produce and more for statues and parties.” He wonders what her garden looks like, and if it’s as beautiful and warm as she is.
She apologizes for trying to pull away from him, saying it’s a force of habit. “What is?” he asks, curiosity getting the better of him. “Assuming people don’t want to hear from you?” That seems quite sad, as Bee is the most interesting and charming person he’s ever met. She at least reassures him that she would like to get to know him as well, which makes him feel a little less guilty for being so blunt with her and seemingly making her nervous.
He listens to her talk about Newt quietly, a faint smile on his lips as he watches her with warm green eyes. He likes that she knows these things; that she cares enough to know how different creatures are mistreated, and she wants to make a difference. None of his family ever talked about jobs like this– they spoke of them as tools to bring honor to the family, not help someone outside of it. She mentions her owl, telling Regulus his name, and it makes him happy that she wants to share everything about herself with him. He frowns when her gaze falls, apologizing as if ashamed of how much she had spoken. “I wish you wouldn’t apologize,” he says gently. “I haven’t gotten to hear many different perspectives, living in a wizarding village of mostly purebloods. This is the first time I’ve met someone who cares about creatures too… where I’m from, it’s frowned upon. When my mother thought I might be interested in the career, she told me that being a magizoologist was for simpletons who sympathized with dirty creatures because they couldn’t make themselves useful to wizarding society.” For the first time, he feels actual shame talking about his family to someone else. He hopes Bee doesn’t think he’s anything like his mother, and the thought alone takes him by surprise. “The point is, I like hearing you talk about how much you love them…”
He nods when she asks about his mother burning his book. “It was Dragon Species of Great Britain and Ireland. She hated that I took an interest in the topic…” He shrugs, looking away with sad green eyes. It’s not something he likes to recall, but he does want to share the truth of his family with Bee, for some reason.
He listens to her speech about how becoming a dragonologist would be a good thing, trying desperately to believe her. All he can remember is his mother’s disapproving face and her harsh criticism, cutting deep and making him want to undo his actions somehow and please her again so she still loved him. Maybe that feeling has informed every choice he’s made since then. “It’s more difficult than it seems, trying to stop wanting her approval.” Maybe that was something Bee understood.
Regulus wonders if he shouldn’t have answered her bluntly; maybe he was coming on too strong, which was a strange thing to realize when according to his mother he shouldn’t even be talking to Bee at all. She avoids his gaze, but she tells him he doesn’t need to apologize. “Would you rather I flirted with other girls?” he teases lightly, watching for her reaction.
After eating his first cauldron cake, he returns to stroking Alfie’s fur, enjoying the soft texture against his fingers as the animal settles into his lap with his new ring. Regulus shrugs in response to Bee’s protests. “I wanted to.” Was it so bad that he wanted to impress her, and give her everything she wanted?
He’s not sure why, but he feels irritated at Bee’s father for telling her she would get fat. “Seems like the wrong thing for him to be worried about,” he observes. “Maybe I want to fatten you up… Make your cheeks chubbier so they’re easier to pinch.” He teases her, glancing up at her pretty face again. “You’d give nice, soft hugs too… Though you probably don’t need any help in that department.” He wonders what hugging Bee is like, and if she’d ever hug him.

Day 125.4: Accidental Bonding (Part Four)
(You can start at Part One, if you’d like.)
"Come on," Harry begged, the following Friday. "Please come to dinner." The bond had only seemed to strengthen in the past eighteen days and Harry found his mind turning to thoughts of Draco almost constantly whether they were together or apart.
And touching the other man was almost second nature at this point. They spent all day every day touching the other without thinking; they sat with their ankles pressed together under their desks, hands brushed against shoulders and backs as they walked past each other, they frequently held hands without even talking about it first, and Harry couldn't remember the last time that he'd woken up without being wrapped around Draco's body or vice versa. Yes, the bond wasn't showing any signs of weakening.
"Your friends hate me, Potter," Draco reminded him as he pulled a wine glass down out of the cupboard.
Harry sighed, "But they wouldn't if they got to know you."
Draco leveled him with a glare, the kind that Harry had learned to recognize as a shield of sorts that the other man used when he was feeling insecure. "They have good reason to hate me," he said as he filled the glass.
"Not anymore," he protested.
The other man rolled his eyes and took a large swallow of his wine.
"Come on," he said again. "If you're there no one will flirt with me."
Draco face twisted in disgust, it was unpleasant for both of them if someone touched one of them with certain intentions.
"If they're rude, you can leave right away," he added.
"What's in it for me?" Draco asked.
He thought for a moment, "A foot rub," he offered, remembering the night that Draco had drunkenly been complaining that his feet hurt and Harry had drunkenly offered a foot rub. There'd been something immensely satisfying about it, he assumed it was something to do with the bond and not with the look of rapturous delight on Draco's face.
(Read more below the cut)
Draco's eyes narrowed, "And I can leave immediately if they're unkind."
"Yes."
"And you'll give me a long foot massage?"
He laughed, "Yes."
"Fine."
Harry grinned at him. "Excellent. Let's go then, they're meeting us at The Night Owl."
"How did you know I'd say yes?" he asked, looking affronted.
"I didn't," Harry lied, even he'd had a strong suspicion he could convince the other man. "They could eat there without us if you didn't want to go."
He didn't seem entirely convinced but he allowed Harry to take his elbow and he apparated them to the apparition point closest to The Night Owl.
Ron and Hermione were already sitting at a booth when they arrived, and Harry slid his fingers through Draco's as he headed over. "Hey," he greeted brightly.
His best friends both looked up, smiling at Harry before doing a double take when they saw Draco standing there beside him.
"Malfoy," Hermione said, eyebrows lifting. "What a surprise!" she said, glancing at Harry.
He could feel Draco's nervousness like it was a tangible thing. "Yeah," Harry said, widening his eyes meaningfully at her, "I told you he might be coming."
"Yeah," Ron said, "But we didn't think he actually would."
"Well," Draco said, detaching his hand from Harry's, "This has been fun but I'm going to-"
"No," Harry said, turning toward him and grabbing his hand again, "It's fine," he said, glaring at his friends, who he had told to be on their best behavior and to just give the other man a chance.
"Yes," Hermione piped up. "Stay, please. We were just surprised."
Draco looked at Harry for a long moment, obviously arguing with himself before nodding once and sliding into the booth.
Harry slid in next to him, the first (and hopefully largest) hurdle out of the way.
------------------
Dinner went surprisingly well. Hermione and Ron obviously struggled a bit but Harry had asked them to give him a chance and they seemed to be trying.
Everyone seemed to relax a bit once they'd had a few drinks and when Draco got up to use the loo, Harry turned to his friends, "So?" he said eagerly, "He's different, right?"
Ron and Hermione looked at each other before Hermione said carefully, "I think it's too soon for me to tell."
"Yeah, mate," Ron agreed, "I know you've always had that thing for Malfoy but," he shrugged, "it's hard to know what's real and what's an act."
"You do know that he like cut ties from his parents, right?" Harry asked incredulously, "he believes that all of that pureblood nonsense is garbage."
"Does he though?" Hermione asked, "Or is that just what it behooves him to have you believe?"
"He lives in a tiny flat!" he protested. "He said that he was so compelled by your arguments about house elves that he couldn't bring himself to have one for his flat."
"Are you sure?" Ron asked, "Or does he just hide it from you? House elves are wicked good at magic."
"He knows how to cook," Harry said, "From scratch. And he knows cleaning spells," he added. "Why would he have to know cleaning spells?"
Hermione looked at him thoughtfully, "Maybe you're right-"
"Just give him a chance," he said. "You won't-"
"Better talk about something else," Ron interrupted, "He's headed this way."
"Well, I tried to get Lugnok to speak with me about the discrimination that Goblins have been facing for ages in the wizarding community, but he wasn't very forthcoming," Hermione started as Draco slid into the booth once again.
"Oh," Draco said as he pressed his shoulder against Harry's and they both relaxed into the pleasant hum thrumming through the bodies, beginning at their shoulders and radiating outward. "I read the last article that you published in The Daily Dilemma," he said excitedly. "It was fascinating," he added.
"Really?" Hermione asked, sounding surprised.
He nodded, "I always wanted to learn more about Goblin magic but good information is so hard to find. When I was young, I'd hoped that it was something they'd teach at Hogwarts-"
"Yes!" Hermione agreed emphatically. "I have been trying to convince Minerva of that for years."
"We don't know nearly enough about magic that other beings possess and honestly," he said, lowering his voice slightly, "I don't know why any other magical being puts up with us. I can't understand it." He shook his head, "I mean for all intents and purposes, their magic is stronger than ours and they've got better control of it. A house elf, for example," he said, "when they want to apparate somewhere it's just a snap of the fingers. And their blind apparation is loads better than ours," he shook his head, "And that's just one spell."
Hermione nodded, "It's never made sense to me."
Draco swallowed, "I'm sorry about that, by the way," he said, not quite meeting her eye, "for making fun of your organization." Then his mouth twisted, "For a lot of things, really," he continued. "Many that were worse than that."
"Thank you," Hermione said after a moment. "I appreciate your apology."
He nodded once. "You probably know this already, but Henri Laurence is a real advocate for changing the way we treat other magical beings. He could probably help your causes."
"Who?" she asked, brows furrowing as she tried to place the name.
"Henri Laurence," he repeated.
She shook her head, "I'm not familiar with that name."
"He works in transportation," Draco replied.
"Why would I talk to someone in transportation?"
He gave her a wry smile, "Henri works closely with a lot of department heads to schedule their trips. He's very amiable and everyone loves him," he added. "More than one political career has risen and fallen by his words. He also works with the Minister quite a bit, the Minister is quite fond of him."
"I never would have thought to start there. Thanks for the tip," she said, giving him a cautious half smile.
"Of course," Draco said automatically. "I'd be glad to give you names if you're ever wondering the best way to get things into people's ears. I'm afraid I can't do introductions, though," he said with a self depreciating laugh.
"Thank you," Hermione said, sounding genuinely grateful. "That would be so helpful."
Draco gave her a little smile and Harry felt hope bubbling merrily in his chest.
----------
As the evening drew to a natural close, Harry couldn't help but think that everything went exceptionally well.
Draco was still talking about Hermione's current project with the Goblins at Gringotts as Harry headed back toward the bedroom, Draco trailing along behind him. "It's invaluable," he said as he started to strip so he could put on his pajamas. "This research could change the way that we think about other beings. We could really have the opportunity to understand them better and then maybe we'd understand our own magic and our own limitations better."
Harry nodded, "You sound just like her. I thought you two might hit it off."
"Did you?" Draco asked curiously as he crawled into bed.
He nodded, sitting at the bottom and pulling Draco's left foot into his lap, pressing his thumbs up the curve of Draco's arch. "You're the only other person I know who likes to talk about Magic Theory."
He let out a low moan as Harry's thumbs rubbed the ball of his foot, "Potter, you are really good at that," he said, thoroughly distracted from the conversation they'd been having.
Harry laughed.
"I'm serious!" the other man protested. "If the whole saving the world, one idiot at a time thing fails, you can go into foot massages."
Chuckling, he shook his head, "Can you imagine?"
"Yes," Draco replied, closing his eyes and settling further into the mattress, "I'd come see you every day."
"Ah, in that case," Harry teased, "maybe I should think about it."
"You do that," he said, in that distant voice that meant he wasn't listening to him anymore.
"Read something," Harry said.
The other man opened one eye to look down at Harry, "What?"
"Read me something," he said. "Grab a book off your nightstand," he said, nodding to the pile, "And read. But don't pick something boring."
Draco reached over and plucked a slender book off the nigh stand, "I think you'll like this one. He gets everything wrong but it's delightful." He cleared his throat, "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit..."
Harry listened as he read, a smile tugging at his lips, his chest filling with warmth.
This was nice, Harry couldn't help but think. Living with someone, sharing meals with someone, having someone in your bed when you went to sleep and when you woke up. It was nice to have the sound of someone else's voice and the feeling of someone else's hand in yours.
He wondered if he'd miss it when the bond ended in twelve days.
More importantly, he wondered if Draco would miss it.

You missed the train in your second year.
You and Tony overslept after staying up late watching a television series, and Jarvis mentioned that he had to pick up some packages from your father at the Ministry of Magic, so he wasn't home to wake you up or take you two to the station.
It was already half past eleven when you both woke up.
"You lost your mind." You said to your brother as you watched him put your school luggage into the trunk of the muggle car your father had bewitched. Tony laughed, ignoring your protests.
"We can drive there, and then I'll charm the car to come back. No one will know."
"We could wait for Jarvis to come back too." You retort but Tony denies it.
"Jarvis will be at Mystery all day, you know how bureaucratic these orders from daddy are." He argues. "Come on, it'll be all right."
Things were not all right.
Tony couldn't control the car after you guys arrived on the Hogwarts grounds, since the magical barrier destabilized the entire muggle structure of the vehicle.
"That shouldn't happen." He grumbled as the car began to vibrate and its image became almost frosted before it returned to normal.
"Tony, we're falling." You said, and your brother tried to pull the steering up, but the car did not obey.
A loud noise later, and you two landed hard against a tall tree. The Whomping Willow.
"I should have known that the Starks would think they can do anything in this school." Said Professor Erik Lehnsherr as soon as you were rescued from the top of the Willow, and taken to Principal Harkness' office.
"We're sorry, Professor Lehnsherr" You asked while your brother just clenched his jaw at the provocation. You nudged him in the ribs and he crossed his arms, apologizing afterwards.
"Sorry I'm late Erik, we're having some problems in the greenhouses" Principal Harkness said as she entered the room, she smiled at you and your brother, her posture was friendly and good humored, very different from the other man in front of you. "What was the immeasurable problem that you mentioned?" she scoffed lightly and Erik cleared his throat before speaking.
"The Stark siblings arrived at the castle in a magically enchanted muggle car, Headmistress." He narrated and Agatha blinked in surprise. "They broke at least three hundred laws of the institute of International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, and on top of that, they caused the damage to the Whomping Willow, which has been at the school since before they were born!"
"Wow, that's pretty serious." Commented the teacher, and Erik frowns in surprise at her tone. "Tell me, what spell did you use?"
Tony blinked in confusion, the principal was not angry. She was just curious. Before he could answer, however, Professor Erik let out an exclamation.
"Agatha, they broke the law and..."
"Are you the principal, Erik?"
"I... No, but..."
"That's what I thought." She interrupts with a sharp smile. "Give them some punishment, I don't know, a month's detention, those things we do here."
"Agatha, I think..."
"That's all, Erik, thank you."
Professor Lehnsherr looked as shocked as you. The principal waved with a smile at you as you left the room in company with the professor.
"Starting tomorrow, boy, you will be in detention with me every day." Announced Erik sternly to his brother. "And you, girl, I will discuss the conditions of your punishment with the head of your house and you can be sure I will tell him everything that happened in that garden."
You and Tony swallowed dryly, intimidated by the menacing posture of the adult in front of you.
"To your dorms immediately." He ordered, and you walked side by side to the stairwell.
//-//
"I can't believe you did that!" Gamora impressedly remarked as soon as you joined her at the Slytherin table the next day, Nebula and Mantis by her side.
"Everyone is talking about it now." Nebula added as she ate some cereal. You felt your cheeks heat up as you looked around. There really were curious looks being cast at you.
"It was an accident." You said. "The car wasn't supposed to break down."
"It was dangerous and irresponsible." Rebutted Nebula without looking at you. "Typically Gryffindor, so my opinion is that you are walking around with Quill too much."
You rolled your eyes, laughing lightly.
"Hey, soon I'm going to start thinking you're from Slytherin, punk." Announced Tony as he approached the table, Steve and Bucky behind them.
"You wish." You teased lightly. Noticing the quidditch uniforms, you bit the inside of your cheek. "Do you have practice now?"
"No, we' re just going to play a little bit." He says. "There's really nothing to improve here."
Steve and Bucky laugh at Tony's cocky statement, and you roll your eyes, smiling a little.
"You're so full of yourself, aren't you, Tony?" Steve says afterwards.
" That''s just facts." He retorts, reaching out to steal one of your toasts. "See you later, kid."
After they leave, Gamora looks at you.
"Did you tell him you're going to try out for the team?"
"No." You reply with a chuckle. "I want it to be a surprise."
//-//
The following week, tryouts for the quidditch team were being held at the stadium, and all the team captains, including the Flight teacher, James Rhodes, were present.
He arranged the students in rows, and when Steve Rogers saw you he smiled encouragingly, waving. Tony walked over to you, equally excited.
"Pesty, why didn't you tell me you were going to take the test?" He asked as he hugged you quickly, and you felt your cheeks heat up as your classmates looked at you two with curiosity.
"It was a surprise." You retorted smiling and Tony messed up your hair before walking back with the other captains.
"We'll start with trios among everyone, and then separate you by houses." Announced Professor Rhodes with a smile. "Good luck everyone."
Your first trio were two students from Gryffindor that you didn't know. You would have liked to have taken the test with Peter, but he took the test with Pietro Maximoff, who had a wicked grin on his face, and almost knocked Peter off his broomstick when they were flying together. You grimaced angrily, and Wanda Maximoff glared back at you, as if daring you to do something against her brother. You rolled your eyes, and tried to pay attention to your own test.
"Hey, could you try to stop that bludger for me to throw?" Asked the short boy who was from the trio you were facing. He was from Hufflepuff, and his name was Peter Parker, but you actually never met him, and you only knew his name because the blond Ravenclaw girl in the stands was cheering him on.
"Sure, i got it." You said waiting for the bludger to arrive. You blinked in surprise when the object changed course in the air. The bludger wasn't going to mess up your test, or hit any of your friends, but on that course, it was going to hit Pietro right in the back. You sighed, hesitating. Then you shouted, "Yoy, Maximoff, look out!"
Pietro blinked in surprise at your warning, and managed to duck at the last second. You didn't look at him again.
Next, your partner was Peter Quill, thank goodness. He smiled charmingly at you riding beside him, and you nudged him slightly.
You were going up against two other students who looked older, but neither you nor Peter were intimidated.
"Come on brat, you don't want to embarrass your brother, do you?" taunted one of the boys as you prepared to hit back the bludger coming from Pietro's direction. You barely thought about it, and shot back, hitting the boy who had provoked you right in the chest.
He let out a sharp exclamation of pain, and fell backward. You blinked in fright, and dove in with the broom, grabbing him by the cape just moments before he hit the ground. You let go of him next, the boy had a pained expression as he massaged your chest. But he looked annoyed at you next.
"Pay attention to your surroundings." Said someone next to you. You looked up to notice Professor Rhodes looking at the two of you seriously. You swallowed dryly, flying away afterwards.
You made it to the Hufflepuff team. Your brother smiled contentedly, waving to you as he greeted Wanda, who also made the Slytherin team.
After the Quidditch tryouts, you had a few classes, and then your first detention.
You were going to help the elves with the castle services, and were almost glad to know that you didn't get the same detention as Tony: cleaning the greenhouse.
In the second week, one of the elves asked you to seek a special concoction from Professor Lehnsherr, so you walked to the potions room.
"I am so disappointed with you, girl." You heard a male voice say from inside the room, the door ajar. For some reason, you hesitated to enter. "I told you before, you can't lose control. That puts everything at risk."
"I'm sorry, papa." Mumbled a female voice, almost tearful. "It won't happen again."
You raised your hand to knock, not wanting to be nosy. But the door opened in front of you. Professor Erik Lehnsherr had his hand outstretched in the air, and you swallowed dryly, feeling your cheeks flush.
"What do you want?" he asked angrily and you shifted your weight between your feet, recognizing Wanda in the room.
"S-sorry to interrupt professor." You said. "I am looking for the cleansing potion for the elves. You know, for my detention."
Erik let out an impatient sigh.
"Maximoff, you can go." He said to Wanda. She nodded, ducking her head as she turned around. She glanced quickly at you as she left, but looked away when you stared back at her.
You left the room several minutes later. A package with several potions in it lay on your arm.
Whistling softly, you tried not to be intimidated by the dank, dimly lit corridors of the dungeon, but you were quite disturbed when you heard a noise.
You bit your lip, deciding if it was worth investigating. Leaving the package in the corner of the hallway, you drew your wand, walking toward the metallic sound.
As you turned the corner, you froze. A few meters ahead of you in the hallway was a troll. Metal chains on its hands and feet, the sound of them echoing down the hall.
But he was quiet, practically motionless. His reddened eyes sent shivers through your body.
You looked down and gasped.
Wanda had her arms raised in the air, and you saw her standing behind the creature, red magic escaping from her hands.
"W-what?" you found yourself whispering in confusion and then the monster's eyes flashed and he roared, the sound echoing loudly in the halls.
Wanda fell to her knees next, her hands returning to normal. You moved as the monster reacted again, enraged.
He was slow, so you dodged his attack easily, turning around. Before you could cast any spells however, there was a magic field around the monster.
"Return to your dormitories immediately, girls." Ordered Professor Lehnsherr with his wand raised. "I will control the creature." He was facing the troll, focused on his containment spell. You were annoyed because he didn't even look at his daughter.
You ran to Wanda, helping her to her feet. She blushed at the gesture, then thanked you. You took one last look at the monster before walking out into the hall.
"Hey, are you okay?" You asked once you and Wanda were alone.
"Yes, I... "She started and then widened her eyes, turning to you and pushing you by the shoulders. "You can't tell anyone what you saw!"
You frowned in confusion.
"Easy, there!" You exclaimed pushing her hands away, "You don't have to hit me."
Wanda sighed, running her hands through her hair.
"Just...please don't say anything to anyone." She ordered, in a much calmer tone now.
"Merlin, it's okay." You retorted putting your hands in your pockets. "I don't understand why you don't want to tell something this cool, but okay."
Wanda blinks in surprise.
"Cool?"
You smile shrugging your shoulders.
"Sure. You did magic without a wand, that's amazing."
Wanda looks after you for a moment, her cheeks reddening.
"Don't you think it's scary?" She asks and you frown.
"What, of course not!" you assure her. "You can make as many pranks as you want and no one will ever prove you did it."
Wanda smiles shyly at your joke, and then looks away.
"I promise I won't say anything, Wanda." You tell her and she sighs, nodding.
"Do you have any idea where the troll came from?
"No." She says. "I was walking back to my dorm, and I ran into him. There was no one else in the hallway."
You make an understanding noise with your mouth, not quite understanding how the creature escaped from the castle dungeons.
You walk in silence to the corridor leading to the Slytherin dormitory.
"Well, here we are... I'll see you tomorrow" You say half-heartedly. Wanda smiles as she waves goodbye and you walk back to your common room.
None of you notice the figure hidden between the shadows and the purple light around the walls.
//-//
You begin to notice new things after your short conversation with Wanda.
The way the students at school talk about her is one of these things.
In a single day, you hear at least ten cruel comments about how quiet, mysterious and scary Wanda was. A lot of people at school thought that she and Pietro were some kind of evil twins, because nobody ever saw their mother, and there were rumors that maybe Professor Erik Lehnsherr had made them in one of his cauldrons.
You didn't tell your friends what you saw that day, but you tried to bring up on the rumors you heard, and Gamora let out a giggle.
"People make a lot of things up here" she said while you were in pairs in Herbology class. "As far as I know, the Maximoff's mother is a muggle and that's why so many people in our house treat her that way."
You couldn't tell why these things were bothering you, since Wanda wasn't even your friend, but you guessed it was because you had always learned to hate the whole blood purity thing, since your father was a pureblood, but he married a muggle, and suffered a lot of hatred from the witch community that called him a blood traitor for years. You had a certain natural sympathy for Wanda now.
When Halloween came around, you ate too much candy, and your stomach hurt. All your friends were the same, and you decided to bet on a ghost race, a mixture of catch one, catch all and hide-and-seek through the castles.
You were being the ghost when you saw Peter Quill sneaking down one of the corridors, and you rushed to follow him, but then you heard a whistle, and you stumbled to hide quickly, and ended up falling on someone.
"Sor-Wanda!" You started to apologize but when you realized who you had bumped into, you exclaimed the witch's name awkwardly. "S- sorry" You hurried to say, feeling your face flush when you noticed her gaze on you. You stood up quickly, reaching out your hand to help her up. "Everything okay?"
"S-sure." She said smiling, and then she looked down. Your hands were still together and you quickly let go as soon as you noticed, feeling your face heat up.
"Err... you didn't see a Gryffindor boy walking by here did you?" You asked trying to lighten the mood, and looking around."I'm playing Ghost Race."
"This is a children game." She teased with a smile and you looked at her in surprise, blushing even more.
"I... I’m...."
"I'm just messing with you."
"Oh, right." You sigh laughing lightly as Wanda follows you. The sound of her laughter makes your stomach turn, and you don't understand why, so you clear your throat and say you needed to get back to your friends.
"See you around, Hufflepuff." She says as she says goodbye. You try to focus on finding Peter after that.
//-//
Quidditch is as fun as it is stressful.
You eventually discover that Steve Rogers was extremely competitive when playing against your brother.
Slytherin's game with Hufflepuff was scheduled in three weeks, and he was already making the whole team practice the rehearsed plays daily.
After another exhausting practice, you sighed as you flew toward the empty bleachers, four seats occupied only by your friends.
"Do you have to chew so loudly?" Complained Nebula to Peter Quill as he ate a piece of apple pie that he probably saved from lunch. The boy made a face, shrugging.
"I can't wait until we can go to Hogsmeade." Gamora commented a moment later. "We saw the third year kids go out last weekend, when you were playing explosive snap with all those older gang."
You smiled as you took off your Quidditch gloves.
"That "gang" are Tony's friends, Gamora." You explained and the girl shrugged, looking almost jealous that you had other friends, making you smile.
"That Romanoff is scary." Mantis added and your friends nodded, making you laugh.
"Natasha may seem threatening when you first meet her, but I assure you she is a sweetheart." You hit back and then steal one of the mini apple pies that Quill brought. "By the way, I wanted to invite you guys over for Christmas. Tony is calling all his friends."
Mantis and Quill seem excited about the invitation, but Nebula and Gamora exchange a look.
"Look, I'm happy with the invitation, I really am." Gamora began. "But we can't accept it."
You look at them with confusion, finding it amusing in the seriousness.
"Why not, girls?"
"It's just... Your family..." Gamora mumbles trying to find the right words.
"They are blood traitors." Nebula adds seriously. Quill and Mantis both widen their eyes, and Gamora lowers her gaze in shame. You feel your stomach turn in irritation.
"I beg your pardon?" you retort angrily, but Gamora puts her hand on her sister's forearm, asking her to shut up.
"We like you, Y/N, you are our friend." She says. "But our father, he would never allow us to go to Howard Stark's house, not after what he did."
You let out a short laugh.
"And what exactly he did?" you retort, already gathering your gloves and broom from the bench. "What a horrible crime to fall in love with someone isn't it?"
"Please, we didn't mean to upset you..." Gamora starts but you huff in irritation, riding the broom.
"I can't believe you were thinking that about me and my family all this time." You interrupted angrily, shaking your head in disbelief. You flew away the next moment, toward the ground, intending to return to the castle.
//-//
You hadn't talked to Gamora and Nebula for a week. It was weird eating at the Hufflepuff table again, but at least Mantis and Groot kept you company. Quill seemed torn about choosing a side, but you teased him that he could stay with his girlfriend without thinking that you would no longer be friends, and he turned red as he walked over to the Slytherin table for coffee.
At the weekend, the quarterfinal game of the Quidditch championship took place, and you could barely eat properly at breakfast in anticipation.
Mantis wasn't much into quidditch, but she dressed in your house colors and knitted a little yellow sweater for Groot as well.
"Ready to play with me, kid?" Teased Tony as soon as you stepped onto the field, the Slytherin team on the opposite side. You smiled confidently, nodding.
"Attention, players, I want a fair game." Warned Professor Rhodes, who was also the judge of the match. "Mount your brooms and ascend into the air please."
In the air, your gaze met Wanda's, and you smiled slightly, but she just glanced away, appearing upset. You didn't understand why, but you didn't really have time to ask.
And then the whistle for the start of the match sounded.
Being a beater was especially tricky on cloudy days, because you couldn't see the ball clearly with the dark background of the sky, but you had enchanted your glasses before you set up, so you were doing a decent job.
It was during the second half match that you almost died.
Loki Odinson was the seeker, and he was almost reaching for the golden snitch when you looked at him. Your job as a beater was to keep the bludger away from your teammates, and to precisely prevent Loki from catching the snitch. You aimed the bludger at Loki's broomstick, to destabilize him, and it worked. But he didn't take it very well.
Flying toward Erik Killmonger, the Slytherin beater, he grabbed the stick out of the boy's hand, and glared at you angrily before firing the incoming bludger right at you.
You managed to dodge it for a second, frowning as you looked back at Loki. But he had a mean look on his face, and before you could understand what happened, something hit you hard in the head, and you fell off the broom.
As you fell, your eyes grew heavy, and the last thing you saw were emerald eyes, accompanied by Tony's scream.
//-//
Your head hurt a lot when you woke up in the nurse's office.
Healer Cho smiled gently at you when she gave you some water as soon as she noticed that you had woken up.
And then you noticed the other curious faces around you.
"Will she get a cool scar?" Quill asked excitedly only for Gamora to slap his arm next.
You fiddled uncomfortably with the bandage on your head. Tony looked at you worriedly.
"Damn it, don't ever do something like that again." He complained and you looked at him with confusion.
"It was your mate who shot the ball at me." You retorted and he sighed.
"Yeah, Loki is an idiot." He retorted angrily. "If Thor hadn't interfered, I would have broken his nose."
Then you found out that as soon as you fell, the game was stopped and everyone went down to the field. Tony tried to fight with Loki, but Thor stopped him, and all the teams almost started beating each other. You were taken to the nurse, and Professor Rhodes disqualified the Slytherin because Loki used non-verbal magic to bewitch the bludger to attack you. Even though you were angry, you were impressed that a twelve year old boy could do such advanced magic.
"Good thing Wanda reached you before you fell." Tony added after telling all. You felt your face heat up, and Gamora noticed and looked at you curiously. You decided to change the subject quickly.
"What are you two doing here anyway?" You asked snidely looking at them. "Since when do the health of blood traitors matter to you?"
Tony blinks in confusion, but Gamora takes a step to the side of your bed.
"We wanted to apologize for that." She says. "Our father is the one who thinks those things, okay? You're our friend, and we don't think that of you. Or your family"
You looked away from Gamora to her sister. Nebula nodded in agreement a moment later, and you bit one inside cheek before sighing.
"Right." You said trying to smile. "Can I go back to eating with you two then?"
Gamora laughed, agreeing. When you tried to laugh, your head hurt and your exclamation of pain attracted Tony's attention.
"You know what, I forbid you to play Quidditch forever."
"Shut up, you idiot." You retort, smiling.
//-//
Thanos won't let Gamora and Nebula spend Christmas with you, but that's okay. You ask Iron to deliver the gifts to her house with the pseudonym "Apple Pie" in the name, and received their response in thanks a few days later.
All of Tony's friends come to your house during the holiday.
Bucky goes on a joke saying that his brother spread all those mistletoes around to get some action, but you don't understand what he means.
There is a new kid named Sam Wilson in your brother's group of friends, and he becomes one of your favorite people quickly. He is very funny, and makes everyone laugh during dinner.
Quill almost knocks the tree to the ground when Bucky agrees to charm his shoes to fly, and everyone laughs when he gets hung up on the decorations.
Your father arrives just before you cut up the turkey.
He is covered in soot, and looks exhausted. But he smiles and kisses you and Tony on the forehead, saying he will clean himself up before joining you.
"Can the little guy eat food?" Howard asks when Groot walks around the table. Mantis seems shy about explaining anything to your father, making you chuckle.
During the gift exchange, you giggle when Tony and Bucky start playing wrestling and Bucky miscalculates the punch time and hits your brother in the nose, who behaves like a crying baby, even though he has no mark on his face.
You fall asleep with a smile on your face on the carpet in the living room next to all your friends.
Without having any clue about the worried look your father exchanges with Jarvis a moment after everyone falls asleep in the living room.
//-//
When you return to Hogwarts, there are many new announcements on the bulletin board that catch your attention.
You are not sure if you will really have the time, but decide to sign up for the dueling club with your friends.
This is how you end up in the main hall after the last potions period. The wooden tables had disappeared, and in the center you would find a large golden stage. Professor Stephen Strange was beckoning students to spread out across the room when you arrived.
"Come on dear, come closer" Professor Stephen asked the crowd, standing on the stage. "Can you all see and hear me? Good."
Professor Stephen spent the next five minutes explaining that the club was back in activity after some teachers had talked with Principal Harkness, and also spoke about the basic rules for participating and dueling correctly. Soon the students were all divided into pairs. As the crowd organized itself, you noticed the Maximoff brothers in the back of the room, and you looked away quickly when Gamora, who was your partner, caught you staring.
"Let's practice the disarm spell." Announced Stephen next.
It was easy because you already knew. Your father, in the few moments he was home, taught defensive magic to you and Tony. Spells were not your brother's strong suit, but he didn't mind helping you practice.
Gamora smiled impressed when you approached her to demonstrate correctly how to make the movement with the wand.
Your colleagues, however, didn't seem to be making much progress, so the teacher interrupted their practice with a whistle.
"I will demonstrate how to use the disarm spell correctly." He says as he takes the stage again. You exchange a look with Gamora when by your proximity, you hear him mutter that if the students paid attention to his lessons they would know how to duel correctly. "Please, Erik, could you assist me with this lesson?"
Professor Lehnsherr had been quiet throughout the practice, watching the students from afar. He did not smile as he walked on stage, his silver wand in his hand.
"Pay attention, please." Strange asked noticing the buzz that arose as soon as Erik took the stage. "Thank you, Erik."
The two professors got into a dueling position, and then Professor Stephen made a motion with his wand. A white glow escaped through the air towards the other man, but Erik made a quick movement with his own wand, and it was as if he absorbed the spell. You recognized the blocking spell easily.
"It is important that you know how to defend spells during a duel." Professor Stephen then spoke, smiling quickly at Erik, who did not reciprocate. "That could save your lives in a situation where you don't know which spell has been cast on you.
"It might be wise to teach the students some counter attack spells, Professor Strange." Added Erik with a slight challenge in his voice. Professor Strange didn't seem to mind however, smiling at the crowd.
"Great idea, Erik!" he said putting away his wand. "I need two volunteers, please."
A lot of people raised their hands, making Strange give a chuckle.
"I think it's best to choose students who won't turn the other one into a frog during the duel, professor." Lehnsherr commented bitterly, and Stephen sighed, running his gaze around. He smiled when he looked at you.
"Stark, would you like to join in?" He asked gently, and you felt your cheeks flush as all eyes in the room went to you. Nodding shyly, you stepped onto the stage. "Who could your opponent be..."
"May I suggest someone from my own house, professor?" Interrupted Erik next, and without waiting for an answer, he turned around, "Wanda, come up here please."
The crowd erupted in hubbub as soon as the words echoed in the hall. But Wanda didn't hesitate, rushing to obey. You swallowed dryly, stepping forward.
"Great girls, let's start then." Said Professor Stephen smiling standing between you and Wanda. You didn't understand why she was looking at you so seriously. "Let's try the finite Incantatem, shall we?"
You and Wanda nod in agreement and the professor smiles, patting you two on the back to get you moving.
When you reach the dueling position, you raise your wand and wait for the teacher's order.
Wanda attacks first when he signals. And you just defend, which makes Professor Stephen give a little smile.
"Stark, remember to counter attack instead of defend, okay?" He asks and you nod, ignoring the stares at you. Wanda has a neutral expression as you get into a dueling position again.
A bright red spell comes at you as Wanda attacks again, and you have a second to think about fighting back, but hesitate, blocking it again. The crowd lets out a chorus of disappointment.
Professor Stephen looks ready to say something, but it is Erik's voice that fills the room.
"The Stark girl is clearly hesitating to fight back the spell, Professor Strange." He says, and you feel your cheeks heat up, looking down at the floor. "Perhaps she should try to attack Wanda first instead."
Stephen exchanges a look with the other professor, and then turns his head toward you.
"Is it okay if we do it this way, Stark?"
You glance at Wanda quickly before nodding, feeling very nervous all of a sudden. "Let's get started then."
Raising your wand again, you take a deep breath. Wanda also gets into a dueling position, her eyes watching your movements. You swallow dryly, and think of the least offensive spell you know. And you say the words.
Nothing happens.
Your wand lets out a small golden sparkle, and you frown in confusion. Some of your classmates laugh, believing that you have failed to cast a simple spell, and you feel your face heat up.
"I..." You start to say, wanting to apologize.
Professor Lehnsherr steps forward next to his daughter, looking at you curiously, but his tone is severe when he says.
"Again."
You ignore the stares and try again. It doesn't work. Your wand simply doesn't obey you. Feeling frustrated, you repeat the spell again. And again, louder this time. Your classmates seem as curious as you are.
Professor Erik moves around the stage, stopping a few feet in front of you.
"Try it against me now."
"Professor, I don't..."
"Now."
You swallow dryly, and aim in his direction. Ignoring the tremor in your hands, you repeat the same incantation. The magic immediately escapes, the golden glow rushes forward. Erik blocks it masterfully. A mixed look of curiosity and displeasure.
You immediately lower your wand when he takes two steps toward you.
"I don't know what happened, professor." You begin to explain quickly. "I don't..."
"Erik." Warns Professor Strange placing himself in front of you. All eyes on the three of you. Professor Lehnsherr forces a smile, which brings chills down your entire spine.
"I'm just curious, Stephen." Said the other man, putting his wand away and raising his hand to smooth the professor's cloak in front of him. "Just innocent curiosity."
"Let's continue tomorrow night, please. " Professor Stephen announces in a loud voice afterwards. The students begin to move quickly in the hall. You want to ignore the feeling that everyone is talking about you as you come down from the stage. Your gaze immediately seeks Wanda, but she has her head down as she joins her brother, leaving the room quickly.
Gamora is very impressed when you join her.
//-//
"And then nothing came out of her wand!" Gamora told your friends impressed as soon as you were all together at breakfast.
You woke up feeling especially tired that morning, and were eating your cereal lazily.
"That's so weird." Nebula commented. "Do you have any idea why you can't bewitch Wanda?"
You deny it, eating a little. You got a lot of looks this morning, and you were getting pretty upset about the whole thing.
"Maybe it's because you like her." Gamora suggested a moment later, and you choked on your cereal.
After Mantis helped you, you took a deep breath, your cheeks flushed.
"Where did you get that from?" You asked annoyed.
"I just meant that you seem to like her." She said with an insinuating smile. "Like a friend."
Gamora's tone clearly suggested something more, and you grumbled, turning your attention back to your cereal.
When your friends began to theorize about what the whole thing could possibly mean again, you stopped paying attention.
//-//
Tony laughed when you told him.
"I've never heard of anything like that, kid." He said as he took the scarf off his neck and threw himself on the couch in common room.
Technically, you couldn't be here. But it wasn't like people respected those rules anyway.
You didn't come to the Slytherin common room much, because it was cold and empty, and Slytherin students weren't very welcoming to visitors.
But Tony had many different classes than you, so you would only find him in the commons room by the end of the day. After you dismissed a free-flying session with Quill, you went to tell him what had happened at that morning.
"If you had joined the club, you would have seen it." You said straightening your position on the leather couch. Tony laughed.
"As if I was going to be a part of that." He scoffs. "I hate charms, you know that."
"You know it's one of the most important subjects, right?" you retort wryly, and Tony shrugs.
"I won't need that when I study Magic Mechanics with Dad."
You sigh, not wanting to talk about it again. Tony wanted to be like your father. A respected mechanical witch inventor. You didn't like the idea because it meant that Tony would be as absent as your father.
"Hey, why don't you try to figure something out in the reserved session?" He suggested next and you looked at him wryly.
"You're an example of a brother, you know that?" you teased making him laugh.
"Hey, if you're careful, no one will know you were there." He retorted and you sighed thoughtfully. "If you get caught, I'll say I dared you to do it."
"I doubt it." You retorted with a smile.
Tony invites you to a game of wizard chess, but you tell him you need to get back to your dorm before some prefect comes to question you.
On the way out, you bump into someone who shouldn't be there either.
"Sorry." You say immediately, and Pietro looks at you curiously.
"Are you here to talk to Wanda?" He asks snidely, but although his tone is accusatory, his eyes are warm.
"What?" you reply confused, "No, I...I came to see my brother."
Pietro doesn't seem to believe you, crossing his arms.
"What's your deal with my sister, anyway?"
You frown in confusion.
"I don't know what you are talking about." You say uncomfortable with the conversation.
Pietro stares at you for a few seconds, and then his expression lightens quickly and he smiles amiably.
"I'm just messing with you, kiddo." He mocks. "By the way, I never thanked you for that day at the Quidditch test. If you hadn't warned me, I wouldn't have made it as a seeker."
You blink in confusion and then smile awkwardly.
"No problem, Maximoff."
You nod in farewell, walking back toward the Hufflepuff dormitory, not noticing that Pietro continues to stare at you until you turn the corner.
//-//
The next morning, after your spell class is over, you tell Mantis to go ahead, because you want to talk to the professor.
"This is about the dueling club, isn't it Stark?" Professor Strange asks abruptly still with his back to you as he fiddles with his desk before you say anything. He turns around then, his expression slightly concerned.
"I was just wondering if you have any idea why my magic didn't work, sir?" You say with your hands in your pockets. "Everyone at school is talking about it."
Stephen sighs, and he seems to hesitate about something. But then his expression softens, and he smiles.
"Don't worry about it so much, okay?" He says. "Maybe it's just the similarity of the core of your wands. If the material is the same, maybe your wands are sisters and won't harm each other."
You believe this for the first two seconds, but then frown.
"But Wanda was able to cast spells on me sir." You say and Stephen widens his eyes slightly, as if he has been caught lying. He clears his throat quickly, amiably smiling at you as he nudges you out of the room with him.
"I'm sure there's a good explanation for this, but I don't have the answers right now, Miss Stark." He says and you have a frown as he is turning around, walking away down the hallway. "See you next class!"
You sigh, realizing that maybe your best chance to know what happened is Professor Erik.
//-//
Your next potions class isn't until midweek, so you try to do a little research in the library as Tony recommended you to do.
There is almost no material on magic connections in the library's common session, and you figure it's because it's an advanced and dangerous kind of magic.
"You know you could end up expelled if you try to take anything from the restricted session, right?" Gamora comments as you are sitting in the library, dozens of books around you as she helps you investigate.
"I'll try for a permit first." You say with your face propped up in your hands. "If no teacher is going to tell me why this is happening, I'm going to have to figure it out on my own."
No teacher allows you into the restricted session. They justify that a second-year student has no reason to read such advanced magic, but you just feel that they all seem willing to stop you from finding out what is going on.
You plan to sneak in then. After the last period on Tuesday, and as soon as the library is empty, you ask Gamora to help you distract the librarian, and while she does so, you sneak between the shelves.
You look back to check that everything was all right as you enter, and almost fall backwards in fright when you bump into someone. Your heart races with fear when you observe Principal Harkness right in front of you, a curious look on your face.
"P-professor?" You exclaim. "I'm sorry! I was just..."
"Sneaking in." She completes with a smile. You feel your stomach sink, but the woman makes room for you to enter. "Come on honey, you don't need that. Make yourself at home."
You hesitate for a second, but then step forward, your curiosity for answers getting the best of you.
Following in the way the head master points, you end up deep in the library, many books you've never seen around you, their covers dark, and mystical, some of them moving on the shelves as if they were trying to break free.
"I heard about your little accomplishment at the dueling club." The principal comments beside you as you run your fingers through the covers. You shrug.
"Nobody wants to tell me what's going on."
"Does that make you angry, dear?"
You blink in confusion, looking at the woman behind you. She looks back as if she was evaluating you.
"N-no, professor." You say putting your hands in your pockets. "I'd just like to know what's happening."
Harkness blinks and then looks away. She makes a flick with her fingers, and there is a book flying toward you. It has a dark, medieval cover, and there is a magical shadow shrouding the entire book. It 's mainly scary.
"I found a lot of information about magic connection incantations, dear." She counters. "But it's nothing a second grade girl could understand, you know? Advanced magic for even the most experienced witches."
You frown, wanting to say that if she explained it properly, you could understand it perfectly, but being the director, you thought it best to just add:
"Please, professor. I just want to know what's going on."
Agatha smiles, and then puts the book back on the shelf, her eyes have a purple glow that makes your body chilly.
"Don't you understand, dear?" She starts by stooping down to your height, her hand caressing your cheek lightly. "You came in here, and flipped through the books. So many words you didn't know. You found nothing." She says and you see flashes in your head, her words taking shape like a memory. "And when you left, it just stopped being important."
Agatha smiles at you as she rests her hand on your shoulder for a moment, and you face her back. Giving her one last look, you walk in the direction you came from.
When you leave, you only remember what you have been allowed to.
//-//
In potions class, you feel a tingling behind your eyes when you see Professor Erik.
You have the feeling that you want to ask him something, but can't remember what it is.
Gamora mentions that maybe you wanted to know about what happened at the dueling club, but you smile as you deny it with your head, telling her that that story wasn't really that big of a deal.
She frowns slightly, but doesn't insist, believing that you had lost interest in the subject as well as the rest of the school.
//-//
You don't do very well on your Transfiguration test.
If you had to find an excuse, you would say that you haven't felt very well since the dueling club. Your magic has been difficult to shape and control. You don't want to think about it, though, so you just study until everything is back to normal again.
Professor Rocket gives you an "Acceptable" though, and you grumble slightly when the results arrive at your house during the vacations.
You write to your friends over the summer, sharing the results of your assessments. Gamora did well in everything, her grades as perfect as Nebula's. Mantis failed in Charms, but got Brilliant in Herbology, and surprised no one by that. Peter had at least three "troll" grades, and Gamora sent him a chocolate cake to make him feel better.
The week before last, there was a big commotion at the Ministry of Magic, and your father was away from home for three days.
Jarvis didn't let you and Tony run to hug him when he arrived, and before you could protest, you noticed that he had apparated in the house garden accompanied by two other wizards you didn't know.
No one seemed willing to tell you what was happening, and when the wizards left, your father locked himself in his office for the night.
Tony was very upset, and said he wanted to be alone in his room.
"Jarvis, will you tell me what's going on?" You asked the butler when he put you to bed, worried that you were going to stay up waiting for your father. Jarvis sighed, sitting up with you.
"Miss Y/N, there are many things that are not concerns for children." He begins, and you sigh impatiently. The man smiles gently at you. "It may not seem fair, but innocence is a privilege of the few."
"I just want to know why dad and Tony are upset." You complain with your arms crossed, not understanding the man's previous words. Jarvis fluffs your pillows, pulling the blanket to waist height. "Please, Jarvis, tell me."
The butler sighs.
"Just know that there are people in our world who don't have the best of intentions." He explains mysteriously, causing you to frown. "But that's not something for you to worry about, because the adults have taken care of everything. Now, go to sleep miss."
Jarvis reaches out to turn off your lamp next and stands up. You sit in the dark for many minutes before you decide to fall asleep.

Padfoot & Minnie
Summary: Minerva meets Sirius for the first time after finding out he was innocent all along. (Companion piece for Afternoon tea)
Notes: I may take a time out of writing oneshots for a while because I want to dedicate to another project (I didn't forget any pending ask, I promise! - I'm just really excited with this new idea). But before that, please enjoy this moment that definitely happened between Sirius and Minerva.
It took two Order meetings until Minerva found herself face to face with Sirius Black alone at Grimmauld Place.
She was late for the meeting, having been almost followed by one Ministry employer (they had the right idea that she would stand with Dumbledore, but also the wrong idea that they could follow her), and she ought to enter the meeting room immediately, but she stopped at the sight of Sirius Black standing alone in another room, his arms crossed and looking rather thoughtful.
She took out her raincoat and stood still watching his figure.
Minerva had met other versions of Sirius Black in the past. First, that eleven-year-old boy who was too energetic and couldn't spend a day without plotting something with his best friend - then with his group of friends. Then that teenager who was trying desperately to stand aside from his family and made many mistakes in the process. Then an idealist soldier in a war that he was too young to be fighting.
Then he had been a traitor for years. Then an escaped convict.
And now he was a wrongly convicted innocent that seemed haunted by ghosts past.
The youthful Sirius Black that Minerva once knew was gone, replaced by that taciturn man who would only show a gleam when he was in the company of Remus Lupin or when he would speak of Harry Potter. And even then the light was dimmed in comparison to how bright Minerva had seen that boy in the past.
He turned to her and when their eyes met Minerva knew she couldn't delay this moment anymore. There were things she needed to tell him.
But he talked before she could when Minerva entered the dining room - or what resembled one in a very distant past.
'You got old, Professor'.
Minerva lifted her eyebrow.
'You got thinner'.
'Well, they don't keep a balanced diet in Azkaban. And last year it was mostly rats… did you ever eat one?'
'I beg your pardon?’
'Rats', he repeated, winking at her with so much mischief that for a moment she hoped to hear James' laugh echoing in the room. James always laughed at Sirius' jokes. 'They are actually tasty. Have you ever had one?'
'I most certainly have not'.
'Didn't even chase a little innocent mouse?'
'I know how to control my impulses, Mr. Black'.
'So there are impulses', he said, chuckling. 'I once chased a cat. Lily wasn't happy, but I told her I couldn't help myself'.
Minerva blinked.
'So the rumours were true after all?', she asked, trying not to sound very curious. 'You, Potter and…'
'Yeah, we managed that'. He gave her a lopsided smile. 'How many points would you give us for becoming animagus?'
'You mean awarding minors who took the risk of forever damaging their bodies to turn into unregistered animagi while breaking a few hundred school and wizarding rules?'
'I expected two hundred points at least', Sirius said, unabashed by her comment. 'It was impressive that we did it - and no one ever found out'.
'Turning into animals to hang out with a werewolf. You were out of your minds'.
'We were', Sirius agreed proudly. Minerva fought back a smile; Black and Potter had more talent than sense, and they knew it. They would thrive with the idea of becoming animagus.
'How old were you?'
'We started in Second Year. Accomplished just before the beginning of your Fifth Year'.
'Fifteen', she whispered. 'And it only took you two years?'
'We had a lot of free time', Sirius joked.
Minerva remembered the amount of mischief they caused and the equal amount of detention they got into. It didn't seem they had time - but they certainly had the drive to.
'How did you prepare the potion?'
'Bathroom of our dormitory. James knew a lot of house-elves because of the time he spent in the kitchens and we made them sworn secrecy'.
'And the mandrake?'
'We did it in the summer. A whole month silent. James wrote that his parents thought he was fulfilling a very weird promise. My parents didn't notice'.
Sirius looked around the room and then to the ceiling above with disdain. Minerva remembered talking to a young teenager, so full of anger and confusion; he hated his family so much that he had ran away. He'd promised he would never be like them - and then Minerva had thought Sirius had broken that promise when she saw the news he had betrayed the Potters.
Except they had all been wrong.
'Sirius - I am truly -'
'Don't be, Professor', Sirius said hurriedly. 'I understand why people believed I was the traitor. It was my idea to change the secret keeper without telling anyone after all - it's all my fault'.
He sounded so bitter that her heart broke a little.
'I do not believe it's your fault'.
'James and Lily are dead. If I had kept their secret -'
'You did. There is only one real traitor in this story and it's not you'.
Minerva thought of little Peter Pettigrew, so anxious to be like his friends. For years she thought she had been too hard with him - and now she wasn't sure of anything more.
'Thank you, Professor'.
Minerva hesitated for a few seconds.
'I am not your professor anymore, Sirius'.
'So I get to call you Minnie officially?', he asked, more joyful now.
She fought back a laugh.
'Only if you want to turn into a cactus. But I will allow you to call me Minerva'.
Sirius smiled and for a moment Minerva saw the ghost of the boy he once was.
_______
Remus yawned lazily. The best thing he could say about that meeting was that it was over quickly. Any meeting with the presence of Severus Snape felt heavier; no wonder Sirius had exploded in the first minutes of the meeting and left the room.
Remus knew he should go after him now, calm him down and explain what had been discussed. He hoped Sirius was feeling better, but he doubted it - that house brought too many memories for him.
Before he could go upstairs, he heard noises coming from the dining room opposite the kitchen.
He walked quietly to not wake up that infernal portrait of Sirius' mother and stopped at the door.
'Well', Sirius was saying, a note of joy in his voice that was rare these days. 'I can show you mine if you show me yours'.
'Mr. Black…'
'What happened with Sirius?'
'Maybe you are pushing your limits, Sirius'.
'It's just for a few seconds. I give you my word I won't even try to sniff… anything'.
'You can't be seri… well, you probably are anyway’.
‘Oh, I’m always serious. Think of it as a sort of welcoming gift after years with nothing more than dementors for company’.
There was a short silence, then a sigh. ‘Very well. I will grant your wish, this one time only'.
Remus heard a soft sound, then another heavy one, and then silence.
Curious, Remus pushed the door quietly. He did not know what he expected, but it wasn't this.
There was a familiar black dog lying lazily on the floor of the dusty room, but what surprised him really was the tabby cat above the dog, calmly pressing each of its front paws in the fur in the dog's back, in and out, almost distractedly, as if massaging the dog. Then the cat sat, the body covering its paws and ressembling a bread loaf, and caught sight of Remus; the cat threw him the most stern look he had even seen on a cat, looking almost as if daring him to say anything. Remus would recognize the glass marks around the cat's eyes anywhere even without that severe expression on its face.
On the ground, the dog winked at him.
Remus blinked in answer and closed the door quietly. No one would believe him if he told and in any case, this seemed like a moment between Sirius and Minerva anyway.
He just hoped James was watching this from wherever he was.

So, I noticed you write for Peter Pettigrew,,, I was wondering if you could write something for him and a female s/o? Where he has to introduce his incredibly shy, Hufflepuff s/o to the other Marauders. Bonus points if she’s short, like 4’11-5’0. You can ignore this if you’d prefer not to write it. Have a wonderful day.
i will always write for my baby. your wish is my command. also sorry if this isn’t what you were imagining!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The hallways of Hogwarts were ones of great architecture and historic stories that the many portraits of old witches and wizards absolutely loved to talk and brag about. Students and ghosts alike walked along the corridors every day without really admiring it apart from when statues liked to jump out at them or portraits grabbed their attention with things varying from manic laughter to noisy singing. It truly was a work of art.
It looked like somewhere royals or people in high society back in the olden days would come to stay for their Honeymoon or just for a small change of scenery and no matter how strict the rules, how tidy the uniforms or how high the expectations, students definitely did not act as tidy or as civilised as a royal or a lady or lord would do.
A prime example would be groups of rowdy teenage boys thinking insulting innocent bystanders or making creepy comments about a girls body would be a proper thing to do in a hallway as grand as the ones in Hogwarts. Another example would be the much rowdier, much more irresponsible pranksters of Hogwarts that rivalled against the other boys in witty comments or just funny circumstances.
You often rolled your eyes at their work or mutter quietly about them under your breath when they passed, practically yelling for the whole corridor to hear unless they were about to pull a prank and whispering which is where you would normally make your leave from that particular corridor. But they seemed to be everywhere you went and you didn’t see why until a particular member of the group approached you in the Kitchens one night when you were getting your midnight snack from the house elves.
He said he liked you which made you look around for maybe a sign of the other boys in wonder if this was some sort of prank. But it wasn’t and he...actually liked you. It definitely didn’t escape your notice that the boy was one of the quiet ones and seemed to be holding his breath when he confessed. Sadly, the confession was right before the summer so all you could do was send letters over the holidays which were slightly awkward.
More so when you returned to school and found yourself glancing at each other from across the hallways before you turned and scurried off in another direction after smiling. Then he began to join you on your midnight snack journeys which developed into a beautiful relationship full of blushes, grins and soft, gentle kisses stolen before you had to separate.
Pranks your way were avoided and you were practically living in bliss until he proposed that he wanted you to meet his friends. As in the rowdy ones, as in the ones that get all the good scores no matter how hard you try and the ones that always disrupt your reading time in the library.
It was safe to say that you were nervous because you were nothing like them, loud noises weren’t your thing and you’d much prefer to curl up next to the Black Lake with a book in your hand then join the group of boys in the Great Hall where they probably threw food at each other and if someone else's food ever touched you, you felt like you might be sick. Not to mention the fact that all of them are giants compared to you.
“They are going to love you.” Peter promised, his grip on your hand tight as he tried to drag you down the hallway whilst you planted your feet firmly to the ground. For someone so small, he was amazed at how much you can resist his pull.
“They’re going to hate me.” You argued back attempting to pull him the other way but definitely not succeeding. “I’m awkward and lonely and weird and obsessed with bees which is definitely not normal.”
“It’s cute.” He chuckled, giving up on his pulling but being pulled towards you by your grip when he had given up. You stumbled but he grabbed you arms and stabilised you before you could fall forward and hit the floor. “You’re cute.”
“I am not like them.” You took yourself out of his arms with a mutter, frowning slightly whilst Peter frowned too. “They’re loud and you’ve been friends with them forever and I’m just new. If they don’t like me then we’re gonna...”
“I’m not gonna break up with you if they don’t like you.” Peter shook his head and stepped close, his hand reaching down to tilt your chin up so he was looking down into your eyes. “They’ll love you...I promise.”
“I’m just nervous, I’ve never even thought of being friends with them. They’re just so loud and I...I’m quiet and shy and I stick my face in a book every time they come near me. I just know that they’ll find me weird, Peter.” You covered your face with you hands, shaking your head.
“Oh, baby...” He wrapped his arms around you in a hug and you welcomed it gratefully, hopefully he would listen to you...but no, Peter lifted you up and put you easily over his shoulder as you yelped and kicked your legs. “Come on.”
“Peter, no, please.” You begged as he walked down the corridor with you over his shoulders and consequently receiving a lot of stares which you shyly leant your head on his back to try and get rid of the stares. You were just happy that it was the weekend and you were wearing jeans instead of a skirt. “Pete, please put me down.”
“Not until we’re at the hall and you see how excited they are to meet you.” He laughed as you groaned at him and nuzzled your head into his back as you turned a corner. Your palms were beginning to get sweaty and you felt your breathing pick up slightly at you nervousness.
“Peter, seriously.” Your voice had retreated to a small murmur, no longer were you joking around. You really didn’t think that his friends would like you, they were confident and charming and you were reserved, flustered easily and talked about bees all the time. Hell, in the summer you were in an environmental protest against pollution whilst they were probably having fun swimming somewhere.
“You’ll be fine, angel. We’re here.” He said and slowly lowered you from his shoulder, you nervously glanced around when you noticed you were outside the Great Hall and you looked into it to see the familiar three boys sat at the Gryffindor Table. “Hey.” You looked at Peter again. “I’ll be right there with you. They may be tall and slightly intimidating but they’re nice.”
“Sirius once spilt tea on my book and didn’t apologise.”
“He’s an energetic guy, he probably didn’t notice.” Peter tilted his head and you nodded in acceptance, pursing your lips. When he did it, you didn’t confront him and just moved away mumbling under your breath and shaking out your book. “Ready?”
You hesitated as he took your hand and started walking into the Great Hall, dragging you behind him with a small grin on his face.
“No.” You finally answered, gulping and stepping closer to Peter as you got closer to the three boys flinging pieces of bread at each other.
“Too slow.” Peter grinned back at you, tugging you along and you whined, deciding to catch up to him but walk behind him in an attempt to hide from the others. You were there in no time and tucked yourself behind Peter, hoping that your size would prevent you from being seen. “Hey boys, since you’ve been asking...here she is.”
You only heard silence as you stayed behind Peter, gulping nervously.
“I fucking knew she was imaginary, I called it.” The voice of Sirius Black came from in front of Peter before he exclaimed in pain after sounding like he was being hit with something.
Out of curiosity, you tried to peak out from behind your boyfriends shoulder as little as possible but a pair of soft brown eyes met yours instead and you found yourself frozen in place as you stared straight at Remus Lupin and he raised his eyebrows at you. You slowly went back behind Peter, knowing it was stupid because he’d seen you but you did it anyway, raised eyebrows could mean a million different things.
“She’s not imaginary, Padfoot, she’s just behind him.” Remus said and you shut your eyes in regret as your forehead fell forward and hit Peter’s back whilst he moved out of the way and you were faced with three pairs of eyes staring up at you. “Hi, I’m Remus.”
“James.”
“Sirius, but you can call me anytime.”
Peter took a daily prophet off of the table and hit him on the head with it as Sirius laughed and raised his hands in defence, you smiled awkwardly at it and avoided all eye contact. Your hand squeezed Peter’s slightly and he looked between you and his friends, frowning again.
“This is Y/N L/N, my girlfriend.” He introduced and gestured you forward slightly, you glanced up and gave a small wave at them. James was smiling at you, Remus was smiling only a little bit but mainly just examining you and Sirius narrowed his eyes at you before standing.
He towered over you and you gulped as you tilted your head up and his grey eyes examined you with a small smirk tugging at his lips. You backed up slightly, Peter’s hand on the small of your back as he stroked soft circles with his thumb. You continued to avoid eye contact.
“You are tiny.” He stated and you nodded with a small clear of your throat, your eyes trained to the floor. “Well, to me you are. I’m sure Pete has an easier time since he’s tiny too.”
“5′9 is not tiny.” Peter defended and Sirius snorted, sitting back down at his chair as you breathed out in slight relief and stood awkwardly for a second.
“Take a seat if you like, we don’t bite.” James smiled and you about to tell him that it was okay and you didn’t actually want to be there anywhere but Peter nodded encouragingly at you and you sat opposite Lupin, Peter sitting next to you and putting an arm around your waist to let you know that he was there and close.
“So how did you two meet?” Remus asked, biting a bit of his sandwich as James nodded from next to him, both of their gazes were on you and you could feel Sirius staring at you too.
You thought Peter was going to answer so you looked up at him but he was looking at you too, nodding his head and he gave your waist a quick squeeze. You gulped and turned your head back around, eyes trained to the table.
“Well, uh, I was getting...a snack at night and then he, uh, came in and yeah...yeah.” You mumbled, clearing your throat slightly and looking up at the boys before back at the table and then back up at the boys. Your hands were fidgeting together under the table and your knee was bouncing.
“You snuck all the way to the kitchens at night without getting caught?” James widened his eyes as he looked around at his friends and you glanced up, back down again and then up one more time.
“Well, I’m a- I’m a Hufflepuff so my common room is uh...right next to the kitchens.” You nodded slowly.
“Useful.” Sirius said and you glanced at him quickly, furrowing your eyebrows at his narrowed eyes as he looked at you.
“I-I don’t understand...useful for what?” You looked around at them all nervously, Sirius was the one to answer so you looked at him again and found him smirking down at you.
“Pranks.” He shrugged his shoulders, grinning and you gulped again, nodding and smiling awkwardly as you turned your head to Peter who smiled again and rubbed his hand on your waist. “So, Y/N my tiny friends tiny girlfriend, what do you like to do?”
“I’m uh, I’m a passionate advocate for environmental change.” You said, nodding as your eyes found comfort on the table once more. Glancing up once, you caught Remus’ smile as he looked at you and you awkwardly smiled back. “I like to read, anything really no genres. I love exploring different cultures and uh...I like bees.”
“Bees?” James furrowed his eyebrows with a grin as he leaned forward and you nodded awkwardly. “That’s adorable.”
“Why do you like bees?” Sirius laughed. “Is it because they’re yellow and black like your tie?”
“Well, almost 90% of wild plants and 75% of leading global crops depend on animal pollination so they do a lot for us and they look nice on the flowers in my garden.” You said and glanced up to them all smiling at you.
“I’ll have to see your garden sometime.” James mentioned and your eyes snapped over to him as your fidgeting hands slowed down but your knee kept bouncing. “I love flowers. Especially Lilies.”
The boys all laughed and even you managed to crack a small smile at James’ infamous crush on Gryffindor Lily Evans. You felt Peter’s hand squeeze your hip slightly and you looked over at him, your eyes managing to lock in comparison to how you avoided the rest of their gazes. You were sure that your cheeks were flushed at the attention you got but Peter only smiled and kissed your cheek as you scrunched your face up with an adorable smile in his opinion.
“I told you they’d love you.” He whispered into your ear, kissing your cheek again before you both directed your attention back to Sirius’ talking.
tw for depression ; something i have so please know i understand if you’re going through it. my messages are always open if you need a friend. be good to yourself and if this may trigger you pls don’t read it. all the love, olivia <3
pls enjoy this angst, and also please ignore the science behind love potions in this fic.
after cedric had been killed, life for you wasn’t the same. the two of you were the best of friends. you did absolutely everything together. cedric helped you be the very best you.
after him, life seemed grey, dull, and monotonous. you didn’t have anyone to talk to.
your friends pulled back from you and said they made a mistake thinking they could take you on, and you understood. some days you could be so happy and carefree and the very next minute you drifted into the dark abyss that was your mind. you were a little much, for everyone.
over the summer you began reading to take your mind off of cedric. well, not him, just what happened. you forced yourself to read every book in your home. from books about the stars, to poetry, to books on theories, and finally your textbooks.
it was one of the hottest days of summer when you came across the chapter on love potions. it gave you an idea. the chapter clearly stated that the drinker of the love potion would become infatuated with the person who gave it to them. who’s to say you couldn’t become infatuated with yourself.
of course you didn’t want to become a narcissus, so you brewed a very weak version.
it worked. for a whole day you were happy. you ate, laughed, and were so good to yourself. you were in love with the girl you were. you found yourself slow dancing alone, stroking your own cheek, being there for yourself.
of course, it didn’t last and by night time you were back to feeling all too much. the type of feeling where you’re silent and unmoving, the world a blur but your thoughts in a deathly focus.
it was that night you decided that you’d take a weak love potion everyday until your bad feelings went away on their own. you were tired of being the girl people pushed away because they didn’t understand.
so you did exactly that. your entire fifth year consisted of flying under umbridge’s radar. thanks to harry potter and the order, that proved easier than expected. no one suspected you.
now, you’re in sixth year. everyone is convinced you’re happy again and they don’t treat you like some sort of liability. of course, they don’t know that every night you cry and feel exactly like you did in fourth year. but that’s ok, you can handle the nights as long as the days are good. you find it to be a cycle now. in the mornings you take the potion and it’s almost like the best part of yourself fights the whole day to take care of you, but by night, she looses to the worst part of yourself.
“y/n would you like to go to hogsmeade today?” your friend, cece asks.
“i would love to, but i have to study for transfiguration.” you sigh, giving your friend a sorry look.
“ah it’s ok, you’re taking advanced this year. you’re right to study. mara and i will make sure to bring you back some things from honeydukes.”
you smile and thank your friend before making your way to the astronomy tower. cedric was the one to introduce you to studying here, and you never stopped.
you take a seat on the steps and begin studying multicorfors.
just as you were getting up to practice the spell, a body runs into you, causing the both of you to tumble to the floor.
you look to your side and spot draco malfoy, who, besides being herbology partners one year, you didn’t really talk to.
“are you okay, draco?” you ask, helping the boy off the floor.
he smoothes out his suit jacket, “yes, l/n.”
you scoff a bit and raise your eyebrows at him, “are you sure because it’s unlike you to stumble about. you’re just too good for that.”
draco glowers at you.
“okay i’m sorry. i didn’t want to be here anyway,” you gesture around the room, “the astronomy tower is now yours.”
he doesn’t say anything as you exit the room and you shrug it off.
‘as if draco malfoy could be pleasant’, you think to yourself, annoyed.
once you approach the hufflepuff common room you feel the effects of your potion begin to wear off. you curse yourself a little for not drinking enough potion to last you until dinner and decide to run by the kitchens to grab something before bed. there’s no way you can sit through dinner like this.
by the time you make it to your dorm room you feel heavy with thoughts. you curl into your bed crying and stare at the stone wall until you fall into a dreamless sleep. like most nights.
the next morning is a saturday and you wake up early, before your dorm mates, and grab the bottle of love potion under your bed, hidden in a locked trunk. you down the small bottle and watch it refill thanks to the spell you placed on it, and put it back, hidden away.
you decide to head to breakfast early and grab a muffin to take with you to the astronomy tower. you need to master multicorfors before your test on tuesday.
a half hour into your practice, you’re doing the spell almost perfectly. though, changing your skirt into pants proves to be your downfall. you just can’t get it.
“i need the astronomy tower.” a voice says from behind you.
you turn to see draco malfoy, again wearing a fitted suit.
“you can study while i’m here draco.” you say pointedly.
“i don’t want to.” he scowls.
you roll your eyes, “then study elsewhere.”
“no. you can leave.”
“listen draco, i can argue with you all day, but i’m not moving until i’ve mastered multicorfors. so either you stay here with me or you go somewhere else.” you groan.
he doesn’t reply but takes a seat on the steps, taking out his wand and transfiguration book.
you smile to yourself, happy to win the argument, and go back to trying to change your skirt into a pair of pants.
“you’re too rigid with your movements, l/n.” draco tells you.
“can you show me then? i can’t figure it out.” you ask.
“no. just flick your wand more. it’s not that hard.” he says.
you give him a deadpan look, “please. this is the last part of the lesson i need to get. if you show me i can leave sooner.”
draco groans but gets up and walks over to you.
“give me your hand.” he instructs.
you do as you’re told and he grabs your hand, showing you the correct way to move your wand. his hand is warmer compared to yours and you like the way he warms you up. it’s also extremely soft, almost as if he’s never had a single callous.
“you have soft hands.” you tell him, grinning.
surprisingly draco lets out a small smile, “you’re supposed to be paying attention.”
“i can’t. you have baby soft hands.” you joke looking up at him.
“i just use lotion. you should try it sometime, your hands feel like a house elves’.” he teases.
you let out a deep laugh, “who knew draco malfoy was such a comedian?”
he feigns shock, “i made those hilarious ‘potter sticks’ badges back in fourth year for nothing then?”
you suck in a unnoticed breathe at the mention of fourth year before smiling,“okay i suppose that should have been a hint. but it was mean.”
draco and you continue to talk and practice transfiguration up until dinner. the time flying while the two of you are together.
“would you like to eat dinner up here? i can grab us some things from the kitchen.” you ask him, packing your bag up.
“i actually have something to do, but maybe some other time. let’s meet here again tomorrow though, i can help you with transfiguration.” he says.
“draco malfoy fraternizing with a muggle-born hufflepuff. tsk tsk.” you joke before agreeing and heading to dinner.
you don’t miss the eyeroll he gives you for that remark.
“where were you all day, y/n?” mara questions as you sit down beside her.
“astronomy tower. i was practicing transfiguration. you’ll never guess who ended up helping me either.” you beam, grabbing a plate for yourself.
“who helped you? i’m guessing cormac mclaggen, he seems to have a crush on you.” cece says.
your face contorts in disgust, “no, definitely not. that guy is a creep. it was malfoy actually, and he’s surprisingly funny.”
mara and cece give each other a look before mara speaks, “you do know people are saying he’s a deatheater, right?”
you roll your eyes, “malfoy is not a deatheater. i think a deatheater would oppose to helping a mudblood.”
your friends shrug and dinner continues on with normal conversation.
“cece and i are going to study in the library before bed if you want to join us.” mara says, grabbing her books.
“i’m okay, plus i’m super tired. i’ll see you at the dorm.” you smile, before parting with your friends.
slipping into your bed you begin to feel the come down of your potion. tonight your pain hurts even more than usual. you feel so trapped and can’t seem to catch your breath. you keep thinking back to the last time you had spoken to your best friend.
it was a week before the maze and he was sitting with you by black lake.
“y/n i promise you once i win, i’m taking you and cho to the fanciest restaurant i can find and we’ll all celebrate.” he had grinned, leaning against a tree.
you giggled and shoved him playfully before saying, “if you don’t win i’m still expecting that dinner.”
“i’ll win. i’ve been practicing so much.”
“i know, you barely ever have time to see me now.” you had sighed.
“y/n i’m sorry. i promise that after all of this is over, you and i are going to see each other everyday. i can’t live without you, kid. you’re my best friend.” he soothed, giving you a hug.
you had leaned into him, “forever?”
he laughed, “of course.”
that memory was etched in your brain. you knew it would never leave your mind.
you laid silently crying in your bed as your dorm mates entered to room, ready for bed. they said goodnight to each other before getting into their own beds, assuming you to be drifted off by now, and after a few minutes, their snores are the only sound in the room.
the emptiness of your being feels too much and you’re desperate to escape. you need air. you need something to remind you that you’re alive.
you quietly sneak out of your room, out of the common room, and up the stairs to the astronomy tower.
as you quickly enter the doorway of the tower, a body collides into yours, knocking you back a bit.
when you look up, tears falling out of your eyes, you’re greeted by teary grey ones. draco’s.
he sniffles and steadies himself before asking, “what’s wrong, l/n?”
you can’t seem to find the words. no one has asked you this question in years, and so much is wrong.
all you can do is cry harder.
“you have to breathe l/n. you’re going to upset yourself more, just breathe.” he says, voice breaking.
you try to calm down but nothing is helping. nothing feels real. cedric should still be here. you shouldn’t be this broken. life should be how it was. now it’s just too much.
“i hate it, draco.” you finally cry out.
he wipes the tears from his own eyes, “what do you hate, l/n. talk to me.”
“i hate that i haven’t been the same since fourth year. i hate that my best friend is gone. i hate that i have to worry that everyone around me is going to die, just because of some evil dark wizard. and i hate that i take fucking love potions everyday just to feel okay. i hate it all.” you breathe, finally.
draco raises his eyebrows, “you’ve been taking love potions?”
you nod, weary of your confession.
“i’m sorry y/n.” he mumbles.
your eyes meet his at the mention of your first name. coming from him it seems so genuine. he’s never called you by your first name before.
“you won’t tell anyone will you?” you ask, eyes searching his.
“no, i won’t,” he pauses. “but you should get back to your dorm, i’ll walk you back. a walk might help you calm down.”
you nod and let the boy lead you through the dark castle, lit only by the moon. draco’s steps are lighter than yours, and it causes you to wonder how he learned how to be so quiet. it’s unlike him.
when the two of you reach the hufflepuff entrance you whisper to him, “thank you for calming me down, draco. it means a lot that you would help me.”
in the shadows you see him smile, but it doesn’t reach his eyes. you bid the boy goodnight, and walk back to your dorm. of course you’re still sad but the sadness is somewhat diluted, thanks to none other than draco malfoy.
you continue to meet with draco daily throughout the months of your sixth year. the two of you finding comfort in each other.
by now, you’re becoming far less dependent on love potions. having someone to confide in proving immensely helpful.
but although you’re getting better, draco only grows worse. you never ask him what’s troubling him. maybe because you’re scared he won’t tell you or maybe because you’re scared to loose the person helping you the most. either way, you still try to help him as much as possible.
today, may the eighth, draco and you have plans to go to hogsmeade to look for a new notebook for you, since your old one is completely used up. you really loved mcgonagall, but the woman sure stressed you out with all the notes she commanded your class to take.
you’ve been waiting patiently for twenty minutes, but he doesn’t seem to be anywhere in sight.
maybe he’s still at breakfast? you think to yourself, before heading into the castle to search for your friend.
you peer around the dining hall, coming up short. so you decide to go to the astronomy tower. if you needed draco you could usually find him there.
when you enter the sixth floor, ready to head further up, you hear shouting. curious, you walk toward the noise, which is coming from the boys’ bathroom.
you hesitate going in but once you hear a defensive spell being cast, you draw your wand and bound into the bathroom.
in front of you stands harry potter. he’s crouched behind a wall, clutching his wand and panting. you furrow your brows, and go to question what he’s doing before you see draco emerge and cast the cruciatus curse at him.
before you can tell them both to stop, harry yells out a curse you’ve never heard of before.
“sectumsempra!”
almost instantly, draco falls to the floor, blood pouring out of him.
you’re shocked, and don’t even feel yourself run to him. you don’t hear harry’s apologies. you don’t hear when professor snape rushes in. you don’t hear a thing other than draco’s pained cries.
it reminds you all too much of the chaos of cedric’s death. everything happening too fast.
when snape finally stops the bleeding he instructs you to get back to your common room and keep quiet. you don’t try to fight him on it, and do as you’re told.
after a few hours of worried overthinking, you leave the hufflepuff common room and head to the hospital wing. when you enter the large room, you notice draco immediately. he’s the only one.
“draco?” you call his name, standing beside his bed.
the boy opens his eyes and stares right at you, causing you to cry.
“i was so scared draco.” you cry, placing your hand on your friends chest, feeling his heartbeat. it’s comforting.
“i have to tell you something, y/n, before it’s too late. you just have to promise you won’t tell a soul.” he tells you, voice weak.
“draco you’ve kept my secret over these months. i would never hurt you by telling anyone.” you say.
your friend gives you a weak smile before sitting up in the bed and pulling up his left sleeve, exposing a black ink that contrasts so much from his pale white skin.
“they’re coming here in june. i don’t know the day yet but when i find out i’ll tell you. you have to stay safe, y/n. i’m sorry i didn’t tell you sooner.” draco advises.
“you’re a deatheater.” you breathe out, eyes locked to the dark mark on his arm.
you can’t believe the scene in front of you. your draco, a villain that you’ve been so deathly afraid of for years.
“i’m so sorry y/n. it wasn’t my choice. but please promise me that you’ll stay safe. i need you here with me, not gone by the hands of a dark wizard.” the boy pleads, grasping your hand.
you look him in the eyes, “i promise draco.”
he doesn’t let go of your hand and brings it back to his heart.
“i care so deeply for you, y/n. you’re so good. thank you for everything.” he says, faltering.
your eyes are teary when you say, “i love you draco.”
with that you slip your hand out of his and walk back to your dorm. your thoughts seem to be invasive that night. you contemplate grabbing the bottle of love potion you haven’t taken in a month, but decide against it.
you feel cheated. everything had been so perfect. all the excitement you had from running through the nights with the boy you love begin to eat you alive.
it’s not fair for it to turn out like this. the two of you so dependent on each other, but on two separate sides of a war. there’s no way this can end well.
you realize you love draco, as more than a friend. that scares you and so you’re back to thinking that you’re better off on your own.
draco still sits with you in the astronomy tower daily, but the two of you don’t speak much. you, scared of falling deeper in love. and him, too focused on his task.
of course you find yourself loving the boy more and more everyday. the two of you are always embraced when together, and even though it’s unspoken, you know draco loves you too.
it’s the thirtieth day of june, you’re in the astronomy tower alone when draco comes rushing in.
“y/n you have to go, they’re here.” he warns, checking the stairs behind him.
you freeze at his statement. you knew the day would come but you still weren’t prepared.
“y/n! are you listening to me? you have to go.” he shouts.
this is it. this is the final time you’ll see draco before the war officially starts, after this there’s no more innocent days spent together. here you are again, loosing your best friend.
you get up from the floor and walk to draco. you cup his face gently, “take care of yourself. i love you.”
he eases a little and places his hand on yours, “i love you more. i hope you know that.”
and you do. of course you do.
Series Masterlist | Main Masterlist | Part 3
If you thought people gossiped too much about the rumour of Draco and you being in a relationship before it was even confirmed, the gossip that was instigated from your kiss in the middle of the Great Hall was on another level.
No one said it to your face but everyone thought the chemistry between the two of you surely couldn’t have been faked.
Little did they know though, right?!
Whispers died down after a couple weeks of seeing the two of you walk around holding hands or with Draco’s arm over your shoulder pulling you close in his grip.
In fact the two of you touching in some way became such a constant that it almost felt odd when his hand wasn’t resting on your leg while you were together.
The one thing that wasn’t so weird to come from the game you two had going on, was how Pansy had dialled down her desperate attempts to seduce the blonde Malfoy heir.
Sure she still tried when you weren’t around, but it was a lot less than before and all her attempts were rebuffed and ignored by Draco.
After about a month, her attempts had dwindled and come to a halt.
Not that the two of you noticed that much.
You both had to admit, you enjoyed how things were with each other right now, not that you’d tell the other.
“Hey Sweetheart”
Broken out of your thoughts you looked up to see the familiar blonde approaching you with a grin on his face.
The two of you saw each other earlier that day for breakfast and then later for Potions, but since you both chose different courses, you didn’t have the time to cross paths again until later that evening.
You had been flicking through an astronomy textbook, attempting to finally finish your essay in the Library. Christmas was fast approaching which meant so were final deadlines for the term. Mostly you were fine with the workload you had, thanks to a specific muggleborn Gryffindor who had kept you on track, yet astronomy was kicking your arse.
As hard as you tried, you couldn’t tell your constellations apart from your galaxies.
“Hi” you sighed in reply causing the boy to frown
“That doesn’t sound very happy”
“That’s because this Astronomy essay is making me want to knock myself out with a telescope” you rested your head on your arms dejectedly. “It would be less painful.”
Draco didn’t stop the snort escaping his lips as he rolled his eyes at your dramatics and grabbed your excuse of an essay. With a snicker he shot you an amused look at the last line you’d written on the parchment, aka when you’d really given up all hope.
“’The Sirius constellation looks like a dog but you can’t really tell which breed’?! You’re honestly going to give this in?!” he laughed
“You can’t tell though!”
“Well first, Sirius is a star not a constellation and second the constellation it’s in is obviously a terrier.”
“How helpful”
His grey eyes shot you an amused look before gathering up your books and papers and put them away in your bag. Grabbing your hand he pulled you up and out of the Library which you groaned at, complaining you needed to finish your essay.
“I know” he just responded, pulling you close to him by your hands before detaching them and dropping his arm around your shoulder, pressing a kiss to your forehead in the process as he saw a gaggle of Ravenclaws pass you on their way to the Library. “Let’s grab some dinner and then I’ll help you with your essay.”
The kitchens weren’t as busy as usual as dinner was already happening, but still busy enough to have three house elves approach the two of you asking what they could get you.
“Two plates of roast beef, one with extra roast potatoes, the other with extra yorkshire puddings.”
Immediately your stomach growled at the thought of the food to your embarrassment. You really hadn’t realised how hungry you’d gotten.
Almost in no time at all, two steaming hot plates of food were given to you and the two of you made your way to the astronomy tower, taking a seat on the floor so you could take in the view of the setting sun.
“Why are we here? I thought we’d go back to the Library or common room to finish the essay?”
“How else am I gonna teach you the constellations if you can’t see them?!”
You were taken aback a little.
“You’re teaching me by pointing them out? How do you know astronomy?”
“The entirety of my family are named after stars and constellations on my mother’s side. It was something I just knew growing up because she taught me from when I was young.”
“So there’s a star called Draco?”
“A constellation actually” he mused, “it’s suppose to look like a dragon.”
“Suppose to?”
“Looks more like a snake if I’m honest”
The subject changed over dinner to other things you’d each thought of or heard throughout the day, when you hadn’t seen each other. Apparently the head boy and head girl had been caught by McGonagall in a broom closet getting frisky.
There had also been a fight which had broken out in the Herbology greenhouses which resulted in a mandrake pot being shattered and everyone fainting because of the screams from the young plant.
The real highlight of the day however, was the rumour of the Ancient Runes professor showing an interest in one of the sixth year Hufflepuffs.
“Contrary to popular belief, those Hufflepuffs aren’t as innocent as everyone might be led to believe” Draco snickered as you slapped his arm jokingly.
“I can’t believe a professor here would do that thought!”
“We’ve had worse teachers, lets be honest” he laughed. “Lets recall our last five years shall we?!”
“First one was killed by Harry after having You-Know-Who on the back of his head, the second was a complete moron and obliviated himself- one was a werewolf! Then lets not forget the disguised death eater and then finally this year we’ve been delighted to have the pink toad as a teacher.”
“I feel like we’ve really lucked out if I’m honest” Draco snorted as you snickered at the humoured sarcasm you shared.
A cold breeze shifted through the open tower when the sun finally set, causing you to shiver involuntarily. Deciding to only wear a thin jumper, forgoing your robes whilst you studied earlier may not have been the smartest idea once the two of you decided to eat at that destination.
Draco noticed and immediately leaned back against the wall, holding his arms out to you.
“Come here”
With a shuffle, you were under his arm, pressed against him as you settled into his side, his body heat being a welcoming factor.
“Merlin, you’re freezing” he frowned pulling you closer before conjuring up an emerald green blanket.
“Winter doesn’t really agree with me,” you joked “now tell me about these bloody constellations.”
“Well you’ve got the northern constellations and the southern ones. The northern include some such as Andromeda, Cassiopeia, Lyra and Pegasus. The southern have ones like Ara, Orion, and Canis’ Major and Minor.”
“Which one is Draco in?”
“Northern” he grinned down at you as you reciprocated his smile. “You then also have the zodiac constellations which are the 12 most commonly known ones.”
“Like Sagittarius, Aquarius and all that?”
“Yep. Within all those constellations, you’ve then got your stars.”
The blonde boy explained the basics of the stars to you almost effortlessly as your gaze flicked back and forth from him to the sky, when he pointed out which section he was talking about.
He talked non stop about the stars and you couldn’t help but admire the Slytherin as he spoke of the subject. Draco wasn’t arrogantly top of the class like Hermione was, but he was in no way lacking in knowledge when it came to subjects he knew about like it was second nature.
Time passed you both by like the cool breeze that surrounded you, and before you knew it, hours had passed just being in each others company as he easily gave you enough clarity to finish off your essay, without even having to resort to drastic measures.
You also learnt so much more than any astronomy professor had taught you in all your years at Hogwarts.
Maybe that was just because they weren’t as captivating as the blonde beside you.
You wouldn’t say it out loud, but you knew exactly what your favourite constellation was after that evening, and it just so happened to look like a dragon.
Christmas drew closer and Draco was adamant on sticking to his side of the deal, so with a sigh he set off to Hogsmeade in search of the extensive list of Christmas gifts he had promised to get you.
He had to appear like the perfect boyfriend after all.
Something was nagging at him though and it was constantly circling his mind as he trudged down in the frost to the village.
It had been that evening when the two of you were in the astronomy tower and he was teaching you about the stars, when it had happened.
In the midst of his talking, he pointed out the Orion constellation before glancing down at you and pausing a second to catch his breath, not because he was chatting too much, but because in the vivid light of the moon, you were ethereal.
He had whole heartedly planned to carry on talking, but the sight of you, curled up against him, with the moonlight highlighting your features, his breath was stolen from him.
Almost in a trance he brushed the back of his fingers against your cheekbone causing you to snap your gaze to him, eyes wide at the delicate gesture.
Your wide eyes shocked him out of his state and immediately he paused awkwardly, racking his brain for some kind of excuse.
“Um... eyelash” he murmured, grey eyes not breaking from your own.
“...thanks.”
His mind was screaming at him to just carry on talking, yet no words came out of his mouth.
Instead, almost like his body had a mind of it’s own, his fingers continued to move to brush away the lock of hair which had fallen out of it’s place.
Finally gaining control of his actions again, he dropped his hand and pulled you closer to him, effectively breaking your line of sight. Draco began to talk about Orion again but his mind wasn’t 100% paying attention to the facts that came out his mouth.
What the hell was that?
Shaking those questions from his head, he pressed his lips to your temple and continued his rambling about stars.
It had been quick, fleeting, but Draco hadn’t missed it and he really hoped you had. The affection which was suppose to be scripted for everyone else’s belief had reared it’s head like it was second nature to the pair.
You hadn’t said anything or brought it up so Draco definitely wasn’t going to.
He agreed with himself it was probably best left unspoken about. It was a slip up, something which felt right to do at the time but it wouldn’t happen again.
Attempting to convince himself, he muttered about how you probably didn’t even notice. It was nothing.
After all, whatever was happening affectionately between the two of you wasn’t real.
In short, you’d noticed.
Draco showing you affection was nothing new, yet Draco showing it when no one else was around, okay, that was new.
The kiss he left on your temple could of course be in a friendly manner, right? The brush against your cheek? The way he looked at you?
Friends are affectionate to each other, it was probably nothing more than a friendly endearment. Like a hug.
So why did it feel like there was so much more unsaid?
With a groan of annoyance, you shut it from your mind. There was no use in overthinking something as small as a simple affection. You were smarter than that.
The truth was, the two of you were so hellbent on making everyone around you believe you were in a relationship, you failed to noticed how neither of you denied how believable it was to each other.
Your stomach grumbled loudly, catching the attention of the witch opposite you who eyed you with annoyance.
“Are you just going to sit there, starve yourself and annoy me, or are you going to get some food and leave so I can work in peace?”
“Merlin, Hermione, it’s almost like you don’t want me around.”
“I don’t when you’re distracting me”
“Charming as ever, I see”
With a huff, the bookworm turned her attention back to her books.
Completely bored with your homework, you fidgeted with your quill between your fingers.
“Hey, Hermione? Are you going home for Christmas?”
“You couldn’t ask me this later?” she sighed as she paused in her writing and shot you an irritated look. At the shake of your head, she rolled her eyes. “Yes, My family and I are planning on going skiing again. Are you heading back?”
“Not this year, my parents are off visiting my cousins in America so I said I’d stay at Hogwarts.”
“You’re staying here for Christmas?”
A new voice entered your conversation from behind you and at the look of Hermione’s scowl, you knew immediately it was your blonde boyfriend.
Turning in your seat, you greeted him with a smile. Pecking a kiss to your lips, more for Hermione’s purpose than your own, he took the seat next to you, placing his own stack of books on the table next to you.
“Yeah, like I said, parents are going to America, it’s just easier if I stay.”
“Not many others are planning on staying though, not even the Weasleys” Draco frowned.
You shrugged at his insinuation, knowing exactly what he was getting at.
“I’ll be fine, might actually get some peace and quiet to be honest.”
He didn’t look convinced.
“I’ll write to my parents and tell them I’m staying for Christmas”
“Draco-”
“Nope, I’m not going to let you spend Christmas alone,” he was adamant, “Can I borrow a piece of parchment, I’ll write to them now.”
“Go ahead, I’m not using it” you replied which earned you an exasperated look from the Gryffindor opposite you, which you ignored.
Hermione took the time to observe the two of you and how effortlessly you interacted around each other. It was like a cleverly choreographed piece.
You looked down at your work, Draco looked up at you. Draco looked down at the letter he was now writing, you looked up at Draco. You rested your hand on his arm when you were talking, he leans into your touch.
The Granger witch couldn’t help but almost admire the chemistry between the two of you and how easy it seemed it was to be with the other. Sure, she had doubts at the very start when you’d just begun dating, yet getting a front row seat to seeing the two of you bounce off each other, Hermione Granger believed wholeheartedly the two of you loved each other.
Even if you didn’t know it yourselves yet.
Draco had followed through with his promise and as it seemed every other student had journeyed down to the train a couple days ago. The two of you were sat happily in the Astronomy tower, basking in the silence of the castle and embracing how relaxing it was.
Since the first time the two of you had sat around the tower before, it seemed like this was the place you both chose to come every time when it was just the two of you.
Neither of you had brought up the small affection from the previous time, but acting like it didn’t happen seemed like it was working for the two of you.
“What’s the best Christmas gift you’ve ever gotten?” Draco asked you after a few moments of silence.
You had to think for a moment before a grin rapidly grew across your face at the exact present you knew you loved.
“Snitch socks,” you chuckled “I was given a pair by my grandma when I was like 10 or something and they were the fluffiest, comfiest pair of socks I ever owned where there was a little charm with made the snitches fly around the design. They must’ve cost a knut or something as they fell apart after I only wore them for a few days! Young me was so heartbroken about her socks, she cried for three days!”
“You cried over socks?!”
“The best socks! I don’t think I’ve even known real joy since”
Draco snorted out a laugh into your hair as he wrapped an arm round your shoulders.
“That’s so stupid”
“Don’t be such a jerk, I was 10” you scowled at him playfully “besides, my grandma passed away a couple years later and I have no idea where she got them, so I’ve made my peace with it.”
“Would you still wear them now if you got another pair?”
“Oh 100%, but either way, like I said, I’ve made my peace with it.” You shrugged nonchalantly before turning to the boy next to you, “go on then, what’s been your favourite Christmas present ever?!”
“A pocket watch” he grinned reaching into his pocket and pulling one out, passing it over to you to look at. “It’s a Black family heirloom - my Mother’s side of the family, and it’s suppose to keep you on time for everything. It used to belong to one of my great uncles or someone but I’ve never been late to anything when I have this on me.”
“Really?” you asked sceptically
“Really”
“What about that time you were late to potions?!”
“Left it in my dorm accidentally. Actually that whole day was kind of a disaster. Bloody Pansy and her love potion.”
You snorted as you admired the watch and flipped it over in your palm to examine the back. Cursive words were engraved in the back in another language- probably latin, which had something to do with keeping the owner on time, all the time.
It was silver and about the size of a large golf ball in diameter, yet surprisingly light as you played with it between your fingers.
“It’s pretty”
Draco hummed in agreement as he watched you trace the intricate details with your fingers before smiling and handing it back to him. With a fond look at the watch, then you, he slipped it back into his pocket.
“I just pray I don’t lose it, wouldn’t hear the end of it from my Mother”
“For good reason probably” you snorted, “if it’s a family heirloom it probably means a lot to her.”
Draco hummed once again and pinned his warm gaze on you. He wouldn’t say it out loud but he rarely let the things that meant a lot to him out of his sight.
“God rest ye merry hippogriffs-”
“I’m begging you to stop”
“-ye are A BIRD OF PREY!”
“Y/N-”
“We come in all our splendour, to lead ye ast--”
A hand covered your mouth as you laughed heavily at Draco’s attempt to quieten your singing. You had purposefully tried to make it the worst edition of the Christmas carol possible to annoy the blonde that Christmas morning, yet you hadn’t planned on being tackled into the Slytherin sofa as an attempt to be shut up.
“Did you just lick my hand?!”
You shook your head innocently, not fooling Draco for a second.
The two of you had gathered in the Slytherin common room, as most of the house had gone back for the holiday.
Only a couple of students remained, but after the wizard had glared at the couple of second years, they scattered somewhere else for the time being.
“Okay, presents!”
You almost dived under the tree as you caught sight of a carefully wrapped gift with your name on it. However, finding the label attached to a rather large bundle of Honeydukes chocolates, the smile you shot Draco was almost blinding.
“You did get me the chocolates!!”
“I promised, didn’t it?!”
Draco watched you with a fond grin as you rifled through the basket picking out a couple of chocolate frogs and chucked one to him. He caught the small packet quickly, thanking his seeker reflexes as he did, and looked at you questioningly.
“What, you didn’t think I’d be able to get through all these myself?! Plus I know chocolate frogs are your favourite.”
Draco felt his smile grow wider.
“I got something for you too” you matched his smile
“You did?”
“Of course!”
Pulling out a long rectangular box from under the tree, he kneeled down next to you as he pushed it along the floor so it wasn’t obstructed by anything.With a wary look towards you, he paused slightly.
“It’s not anything that will bite, right?”
“Oh shut up, of course not, now open it!”
With a roll of his eyes, the Malfoy ripped off the wrapping paper and pried open the cardboard box to see the broom he had been envying Harry Potter over for the last year.
“You got me a Firebolt?!”
“Couldn’t have you whining about Harry’s broom any longer, could I?!”
“Merlin, Y/N! This is fantastic, thank you!” He grinned at you before his eyes snapped to the tree and back. “There’s some other things for you still under the tree.”
It was your turn to pin him with a questioning look, eyebrows pulled together in a frown.
Turning back to the tree, you pulled up a few branches and spotted another large box at the back. With great effort, to which the Malfoy just found great entertainment in, you managed to retrieve the box. Pulling open the top flap, the boots and jacket he had also promised you, sat inside.
With a laugh you pulled the boots out first and then the jacket, before spotting a smaller bundle at the bottom. Reaching in, your fingers came in contact with something soft which you pulled out, only to gasp at what it was.
A pair of fluffy green socks sat in your hand as golden snitches whizzed round the design. Not being able to find your words, you looked up at Draco with the softest look you were sure you’d ever looked at him with.
“Draco... you got me snitch socks?!”
“I may have mentioned about the socks to my Mother and she just so happened to know where they were sold. I picked the green ones because I couldn’t have you wearing red ones now, could I?”
“Merlin, they’re perfect! Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
Pretty much launching yourself at him, you pulled Draco into a warm hug, arms around his neck, as he instinctively wrapped his own arms around your waist in return.
“You are the best boyfriend ever, oh Merlin!”
“If I knew it was this easy to please you, I would’ve bought you them ages ago” he snickered.
You pulled away, only to move to put the socks on as you chatted non stop about how great they were, and in turn, how great he was. Seeing your entire face light up because of a pair of socks made Draco smile even more.
Again, he wouldn’t admit it out loud, but seeing that smile on your face, which he had 100% been responsible for, made his entire Christmas so much better.
hi! can you write the number 16 from your prompts list with fred and a slytherin reader? also, love your posts ❤
A/N: It’s so nice to meet a fellow Slytherin!! Thank you so much for making a request, I hope you enjoy my lovely!
Prompt 16: Reading the diary entry over and over, your hand slipped into your underwear.
Warnings: swearing and smut
For the second year in a row, you decided to spend your Christmas at Hogwarts instead of going home. You lied to your parents, telling them that you were drowning in books, parchment, and practical potion-making tests; but the truth is, you were only staying at Hogwarts because Fred Weasley wasn’t going home.
The two of you have what most would call a ‘love-hate’ relationship, you just found him incredibly infuriating but so fucking hot at the same time; going weak at the knees for him. The two of you got to know one another very well during a match of Quidditch, dodging his bludgers, and catching his cheeky grin when you did so. In the classes you have together he always tries to get you into trouble when he’s unable to get your attention, despite what your fellow house had to say about him - you were really into him.
You knew their dorm room would be empty tonight and that he and George would be scrambling into the kitchens at any moment, being given plenty of food from the hard-working house elves, making this the perfect opportunity for you to get your own back on the more daring twin.
Creeping into Fred’s dorm room quietly (incase you were met with a surprise) you spotted his bed and smirked, walking over to it. At least their bedrooms were warm, shame about the red being splattered everywhere - you preferred green, always green.
Pulling a rope out of your pocket you pulled his quilt back and placed the rope on the bed, you had been practicing this for months now - you couldn’t get it wrong now; you needed to master turning this rope into a snake.
Looking up and down the bed to figure out if you should move the rope lower down or higher up, you noticed something poking out beneath Fred’s pillow. Pulling it out, you were now in possession of what looked to be a homemade diary, sporting a massive ‘F’ on the cover.
‘I’ve hit the jackpot!’ you told yourself, ‘who needs a surprise snake from Slytherin when you’ve got this’
Part of you wanted to put the diary back under the pillow and to continue with your plan but the itch that started to spread inside you wouldn’t go away unless you were to give in, and who knows, the diary could just be another one of Fred's pranks waiting to trap someone who went snooping.
You chucked the rope onto the floor and took off your shoes, getting into Fred’s bed you made yourself comfy, you wanted to enjoy this.
Flicking past the first few empty pages you finally found an entry, dated two years back. Sinking into his bed and embracing yourself in the warmth you started to read.
She looked at me again today, those eyes... her gorgeous eyes eating me up like I’m prey, they stand out, even more, when she wears green. She’s so beautiful, all wrapped up in her Slytherin Quidditch jumper, scarf, gloves, and hat, George tells me to stay away but I don’t think I can.
You felt your cheeks burning but there were plenty of other girls in Slytherin, in order to find out if Fred was, in fact, writing about you, you had no choice but to keep reading. You skipped a few pages, reading another entry now dated from one year ago.
I just can’t take it anymore, having to sit next to her and not kiss her is the hardest thing in the world, even harder than getting away with coming home late when I’m back at home. I can’t help but chase her, I can’t help but make things harder for her on the pitch... I want her to know that I’m after her.
Yup. This whole entire diary was a shrine to you, a whole dedicated series of Fred’s feelings for you, and honestly, you were flattered.
Getting a little bit too hot you pulled the covers down and you took off your robe, once again flicking through the diary and picking another entry to read - this one the most recent of all, two days ago.
I can’t help but just stare at her soft pink lips, those exquisite breasts that show through her shirts, those stunning smooth legs that make me want to run my hands up them.
You breathed out heavily, the image of Fred touching you getting you excited. You took off your skirt, only laying in your shirt, tie and knickers.
I just want to grab her whilst she’s walking down the halls, drag her into an empty classroom and bend her over the nearest desk. I want to spread open those stunning legs and eat her out like I’ve dreamt about so many times before. My heart and cock ache for her, I’d do anything to have my way with her; making her cum with my fingers or on my cock, I want her to feel it all.
Reading the diary entry over and over, your hand slipped into your underwear. You completely lost yourself in Fred’s confession, imagining the acts he so desperately wants unfolding within your thoughts. Your index and middle finger coated in your spit moved in circular motions on your clit, one or two moans of Fred’s name leaving your mouth.
Without noticing while you played with yourself, Fred had entered the dorm room embarrassed at first of the sight of his diary in your hands but now he stared at you with hunger, desperation, and pure filth; the sight of you touching yourself over him made his cock hard.
“Need some help love?” He called out, his voice like melted honey.
You were startled at first, shocked that you had been caught in the act but then it dawned on you, this is exactly where he wanted you, he knew all along you were going to prank him and he still won.
Fred walked over to you, a smirk playing on his lips and his cock poking through his trousers. “Don’t stop all because I’m here”
You looked into his hungry eyes and bit your lip, Fred kicked off his shoes and took off his belt, climbing into the bed and on top of you. “I guess the only snake in the bed tonight is you” he smiled, noticing the rope, peeking out of your robe pocket.
“I’m guessing you’re all talk Weasley, you’ve gone into graphic detail describing what you want to do to me and I’m laying here, waiting.” You smiled back.
Your backchat caused Fred to crash his lips onto yours, the two of you kissing as if your life depended on it. One of Fred’s hands traveled down to your wet pussy, and two of his fingers dived inside of you. Moaning against Fred’s lips, your hand went to his trousers, tugging the zipper down.
Fred pulled away from the kiss “want to get you nice and wet before I fuck you” and attacked your pussy with his mouth, swirling his tongue around your clit whilst continuing to finger fuck you.
You couldn’t take anymore, the tension had been brewing between you for too long, waiting suddenly became unbearable for the two of you. “Please fuck me, Fred. I want to feel you so bad.” You moaned out between breaths.
Fred didn’t need to hear it twice, he pulled away and sucked your juices off his fingers. He took off his trousers and removed his shirt, you copied him struggling with the last few buttons.
“Get on all fours” Fred ordered, slapping your arse as you did so.
Fred spat into his hand and spread his saliva across your entrance, without warning he started to pound into you, grabbing onto your hair.
“Fucking hell, Fred!” you moaned out, “you feel so good!”
“Told you us Gryffindors weren’t that bad, you stupid serpent.” he teased.
You had no idea that your relationship with Fred would come to this, the staring contests at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the Quidditch matches and games he’d torment you in, the countless detentions he caused you to get.
You were surprised you wanted him so badly, but then again how could you be surprised? You were being fucked senseless.
Fred’s hand marks were all across your arse, scratches all over his back, love bites on both of your necks, and your lip bleeding from biting it so hard.
Fred picked up his speed, fucking you harder and deeper in your new position (your legs upon his shoulders) he could feel your walls tighten around him, causing his cock to twitch.
“Fred, I’m going to cum” you moaned out.
Expecting Fred to give it all he’s got you were shocked when he suddenly stopped and pulled out of you, laying down next to you laughing. You were so confused and didn’t understand, did he not enjoy it?
“That's what you get for trying to put a snake in my bed” Fred smirked, pushing his hair out of his eyes.
The tension that almost broke free just became ten times worse.
“You’re such a twat!”
He laughed in response “George is going to be in the kitchen awhile, don’t feel as if you’ve got to disappear.”
What the fuck just happened?
Based on this Headcanon list (x) / Part 1 Here! / Part 2 Here!
“So what’s up with you and Cedric?” Fred is the one to break the silence, but as your eyed shift from the gurgling cauldron in front of you to their curious brown eyes. They’re both looking at you, searching your face for any hint of deception.
“What are you talking about?” You go back to stirring the potion, the three of you huddled in the most remote pet of the greenhouse. You’re lucky professor Sprout bought your excuse that you wanted more practice in potions, without having to crawl into Snape’s classroom.
A slight huff leaves your lips, they should really know better. Polyjuice potion is really hard to brew, the motions and strokes have to be just right or it won’t work.
“Oh don’t give me that, we have eyes you know” This time you don’t look up from the potion, it’s only been 10 strokes so far, this is the important part. “The two of you gawking at each other as you flirt all around the school”
You roll your eyes. It was true, not the flirting bit, but you had noticed Cedric was talking to you more than he did before. He’d even wave at you when you caught his gaze in the corridors.
“Fred, he’s on the quidditch team, and he’s a prefect at my house, I have to talk to him.” This was also only a half truth. You did talk to Cedric in part due to necessity, but also in part because-
Well, because he was fun.
You had not expected it in all honesty. You saw the golden boy of hufflepuff one-dimensionally. The handsome face and charming smile masked a mischievous streak he kept well hidden.
“Come on!” He had said with a grin as he lead you to the kitchen in the middle of the night. You were just going to the bathroom, and caught Cedric studying away in the common room.
“Aren’t you a little hungry?” He asked, and before you knew it you were carrying two plates worth pastries back to the common room.
You remember smiling as you chatted by the fire, exchanging quidditch strategies like you did pastries. And yet, even though you were having so much fun, you couldn’t shake off the smile he showed the house elves, the easy words that slipped through his lips to get what he wanted.
It appeared the golden boy wasn’t as one dimensional as you thought. But whether that was a good or bad thing...was still undecided.
You look up to Fred and George, after your dismal of the topic the conversation had drifted into how a polyjuice could best be used to cause mischief.
“I say we use it to impersonate Gilderoy Lockhart and raid the supplies cabinet. He’s so full of himself no one will think it’s strange he doesn’t remember meeting them in case we run into someone.”
“I’m thinking Snape, 80% of the student and faculty population despise being around him so much that we can probably get away with anything. Also we need to restock on potion supplies.”
They went on like this, arguing about who the best person to impersonate would be, and you smile.
“This is even more fun though” you mutter to yourself a smile arching onto your face. You turn your attention back to the polyjuice potion, counting the stroke carefully.
—————————
It was July 31st 1985.
The warm summer air was blowing past your dress. You were sitting on the field in front of the cottage that you and your mother had lived in. You were thinking about Luna and how you should pay her a visit she was a bit odd but, did make for a good person to talk to. Soon your thoughts were interrupted by a black owl landed on your shoulder you could easily tell it was your boyfriend’s Draco Malfoy.
ミ★
You have been friends since your second year of Hogwarts. He had gotten tired of you not listening to his bullying about you being a Hufflepuff and just offering him a smile and saying some sort of compliment that would make him blush every time.
“Hey l/n going to make more friends with more house elves,” he said with a smirk
“I like what you did with hair today Draco”
“I do my hair like this everyday,” he responded as he turned his head away from you trying to hide the blush that covered his cheeks.
It was near the end of the school year when Draco had found you under a tree with a book with chocolate chip cookies.
You were wearing a yellow sweater with flowers embroidered on it, paired with yellow plaid pants and banana earrings. An outfit that Draco had once referred to as “to Hufflepuff even for a Hufflepuff”.You were sitting on a comfy blanket that your mom had made for you for an occasion just like this.It was calming to be away from the castle more specifically Draco. He was so pale he looked like a muggle’s depiction of a vampire so you were surprised to even had spotted him outside without screaming of have much it burned.
“ l/n your sitting under my tree”
“Would you like a cookie,” you’d say as if you didn’t even hear what he had said to you.”Did you not unders- what did you say?” He was honestly confused as to why you a girl he liked but instead of admitting to it he bullied her of all things.
“I offered you a cookie their really good in my opinion” you’d say with a smile, “They’re chocolate chip, my prefect had to help me but I like to think I put most of my love in it”
“I- Well I guess it wouldn’t hurt to have a cookie,” he admitted. “Not like you poisoned it or anything,” He said with a low chuckle following behind. You responded with a breathy laugh. Maybe he’ll be nicer to me this time.
“You Hufflepuffs are entirely too nice for that”
You sighed as he sat on your blanket and gave him a chocolate chip cookie out of your bag with a sad look in your eye that didn’t go unnoticed by him.
Everyday he made fun of you, for something you couldn’t control. Something you never wanted to change. You noticed how his friends were more of bodyguards to him so you let him pick on you because it brought him some sort of “happiness”, but it was getting to you. If you ever told him that he would say that it was incredibly “Hufflepuff” of you.
You looked toward the blonde boy in front of you with a feeling of anxiousness. Maybe it was sadness starting to build up that would eventually burn your throat as you cried like last night.
“Why do you bully me so often?” you said with a sad tone while handing him a napkin and gesturing to his face.
He had a bit of chocolate smeared at the top of his lip although you were saddened and angry at his behavior towards you, you did know he liked to look at his best at all times. Merlin why am I so loyal to a boy who wouldn’t do a thing for me, you thought.
“I’ve been putting up with it for the past two years and its tiring Draco” Your statement was laced with a bit of anger. Something he had never heard before. “Us Hufflepuffs,” you spat, “Aren’t always nice and jolly you know.” You were staring in front of you. “I didn’t want to say this because it would inflate your already large for nothing ego,” you said as you turned to look at him. His face adorned a look of shock.
“But sometimes your words get to me,” your voice had completely betrayed you by cracking and a single tear dropped down your face that you quickly wiped.
He didn’t say anything with his mouth opening and closing it like a fish out of water. You scoffed as you got up and dusted off your jeans, “Here, you can keep the cookies you seem to like them,” no matter how sad and angry were, you, you still said that sentence with a sincere undertone. “I’m going to go somewhere where someone won’t make me feel horrible for something I can’t control.”
“Wait”
“Why should I wa-”
“I’m sorry” “your sorry,” you challenged in a sarcastic tone. “That is what I said didn’t I?” You shot him an annoyed look, you were not in the mood for him to start again. He noticed your face and quickly said “Sorry again.” He sighed and stood up right in front of you. “I’m sorry for bullying you and I want you to forgive me.” His wrote to his mum about his problem. She worded the apology differently but you still got what he was trying to say. “Oh” “Yea,” he said awkwardly while staring at his feet.
You had two decisions walk away and leave him to deal with himself or to offer a friendship. Getting tired of arguing with yourself you stuck out your hand and said with a small “I think we’ll do better as friends and not as bully and bullied. He looked at your hand for a moment before shaking it “That’d be nice, I guess,” he responded not trying to sound as eager as he was. He also didn’t want the only civil conversation to end with his crush so easily so he quickly said with hope in his eyes “We should sit back down, yea, I’ll share the cookies they’re not bad”
“Yea, we should.” For the next hour or two you and Draco talked and got to know one another
His crush grew and yours had started to bloom.
He brought you to the yule ball as his date and admitted that he liked you more than just a friend and you admitted the same now you were reading a lengthy parchment about him apologizing about how he couldn’t find time to owl you because his father and mother were planning his birthday party on June 5.
He also mentioned how he convinced them to not throw a big one like they did every time, he describes it as less of a birthday party and more of an opportunity for his parents to talk to other purebloods and him to talk to their kids so he had no problem cancelling and instead spending the day with you.
“Very-un Draco and very Draco,” you said out loud while looking down at the bottom of the parchment.
June 5th 1985, 7:50
Your mum was never a person to be late anywhere so you were dressed 10 minutes early with a white dress on, a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies, and Draco’s present in your bag.You did your makeup 20 minutes prior because although you did love to express your creativity, it was harder to draw flowers on your eyelids half awake.
“Darling hurry up we don’t want to be late,” you heard your mum call.
“Coming!”
“Do you have everything with you”
“Yes mum,” you said with an eye roll. “Isn’t it adorable a Slytherin and Hufflepuff,” you could say she was more excited about your relationship than you were with the way she was talking.
Your father too had been a Slytherin too while your mum was a Hufflepuff like you.Ironic really how their daughter was following in their footsteps.“Mum,” you said in a desperate tone “oh come on dear, grab on,” she said as she reached out her arm, you grabbed on and felt like you were being sucked through at time.When you touched the ground you smiled in a success of not throwing on your mum’s shoes.
Then, you took a moment to look around. Draco’s house manor was huge.You’d thought he had been exaggerating it maybe he was under exaggerating. It looked like a castle, a dark one at that it wasn’t very lively to be honest, and you would never trade the cottage you lived in for it.
Your mum went to knock on the door with you by her side when the door quickly opened and you were met with a tall blonde hugging you and you eagerly hugged him back.
His head was in the crook of your neck and he said in a tone only for you to hear “I’m happy you came summers been rather boring without you” “I wouldn’t have missed it,” When you pulled away Draco was met with the sight of your mum smiling like she had just seen the greatest thing in the world. He reached out his hand to introduce himself when she cut him off by hugging him and saying.
“Oh dear, you must be Draco,” She said as she pulled back, “ y/n/n here as told me all about you, how nice you are, how much of a great-” You quickly stopped her before she could say anything else to embarrass you “Mum let Draco talk yea, seemed like he had something really important to say”
You could feel Draco’s smirk burning itself into the side of your head and he looked away and said “Oh yes, mother and father wanted to say hi before you left the door is just down the hall and the third one on your right,I can take you if you want”
“Oh no that’s alright I’ll leave you and y/n alone, also happy birthday dear.” He smiled brightly and looked at her as she walked away and then turned to you and said smugly as he tucked one of your hairs behind your ear, “I’m a great what exactly” “A um great boyfriend,” it was embarrassing how you could lose your words around him.
He leaned in closer and said with a smirk “To me it sounded like she was going to say kisser” “Draco your a horrible kisser” “That’s the complete opposite of what you tell me normally,” he said with a mixed look of confusion and amusement. You were really regretting telling your mum everything about your relationship.He pulled away, grabbed your hand and said “Come on you have to see this''
He dragged you all the way to a spot with a blanket and an older looking telescope.It was beautiful really but it wasn’t your day “Draco this is beautiful but it’s your birthday you didn’t have to do this” “Love, of course i didn't have too but I wanted to,” He looked at you with a bright smile “I’d do anything for you and don’t worry the night is still mostly about me” He brought you to sit down on the blanket and immediately said “You did bring the cookies, didn’t you”
You rolled your eyes and said, “Yes,I brought them Draco.” He bit into one and said, “Your an angel for baking these for me love” “I’d do anything for you Draco'' You suddenly remembered the gift you had in your bag “Alright um here’s your gift” He carefully unwrapped it and it was a moving picture framed of you and him in your quidditch robes in third year his arm around your shoulders and you were both looking at each other.
“How did you get this,” he said as he admired the picture “Mum found it when looking through her things, said she took it and forgot about it and she gave it to me,” you said with a smile before he could even thank you reached into your bag again, “That’s not all” “Really,” he said eagerly.
“Really,” you reassured” “Mum found that after I got your gift” “You said as you grabbed the dark green box and handed it to him “It was rather hard looking for something that was exactly your taste but I think you’ll really liked it” “l/n are you proposing to me? Because you do I wanted to do that first,” He said smugly. “No but it is- ugh just open it and you’ll see,” you said not wanting to ruin the surprise. He breathed out air as he saw it, a silver snake ring that would coil around the finger he put it on.
“How’d you find one of these, I’ve been wanting one since second year ever since Crabbe mistaken it for a worm and threw it into the lake,” he said as he put it around his finger and looked at you with nothing but love in his grey-blue eyes. “That's just horrible. I'll have a talk with Crabbe when we go back to school.” “Even if it wasn’t a worm he shouldn’t have thrown it into the bloody lake”
“It’s alright, I prefer yours anyway,” he looked like he was about to say something when you pulled out your wand and said “Oh that not all I wanted to make a little extra you.” You tapped the wand on the snake’s head and it started to move. He looked at it in awe of how someone could be so brilliant. You saw the look in his eyes and smiled at how much he liked the gift. You turned your head to look up at the sky when Draco started to say something you definitely weren’t expecting.
“Merlin I’m in love with you” That was the first time he ever said that to you. You turned your head to be met with his eyes and swallowed thickly to try and make sure you weren’t dreaming. “What’d you say,” you breathed out with a smile on your face. “He got closer to you and said, “I said I’m in love with you” he kissed your nose and then spoke again in a softer tone “I love you y/n” You thought that right then and there your soul had been taken out if you and you had an out of body but before you could stop yourself you said, “ I love you too Draco” “So much”
“You really do?”
“Yes Draco, I really do”
“Say it again,” he looked at you with big eyes.
You kissed his forehead “I love you” Both of his cheeks “I love you” “I love you” his nose “I love you” and then pecked his lips “I love you” in the end of it he was left a blushing mess.
“Godric you're amazing” He cleared his throat trying not to scream at his lungs that his girlfriend just told him she loved him about six times. “The constellation I wanted you to see should be out now.”
You both laid on your backs and stared at the sky you scooted closer to Draco as he had his hand out looking for it.He abruptly stopped and said “It’s right there” You picked up your hand to point at the same place he was but you couldn’t find it exactly so he took both of your pointed hands and pointed it at the Draco Constellation.
“It’s the Draco Constellation,” he whispered loud enough for you to hear. You turned to look at him with your hand still in his as he said “I’m named after it.” He turned to you with a child like smile and said “Wicked right”
“Yea wicked,” you whispered back. Both of your faces were close as Draco took yours and his hand from pointing at the sky. He held your face with one as he leaned into kiss you.
This was in Draco’s opinion his best birthday ending with him kissing the girl he loved and the girl that loved him under the stars.
A/N- I was in the middle of writing this right and I got the months wrong thinking that the Draco constellation came out in June and not July. Hopefully you can look over it for the sake of the story :) Dude and I’m also kinda proud of this one anyways feel free to leave any feedback or constructive criticism.
the conclusion to the fëanorian tauriel saga! this one’s mostly about the state of affairs after she gets adopted into everyone’s favourite family of murderers, plus a couple of extra bits and bobs. there’s some more stuff i’d like to put down somewhere - a deleted scene, a minific - but this is mostly the end of my headcanons for this particular au. so far, anyway. part 1 part 2 part 3
mandos may have, in the past, given off the impression that fëanor would remain within the halls until dagor dagorath
that statement was always a bit of a conflation of terms. like everybody else in the halls, fëanor would get a clean pass for reinbodiment as and when he attended elf afterlife therapy and got a handle on his shit. it’s just nobody thought he would ever do that
but he has done that, and more besides. he’s honestly been clear to go for a while now, he just refused to leave until his sons were ready
and since then... mandos will admit to certain political pressures exerted towards keeping fëanor under lock and key
but over time, those pressures slowly yield to the fact that mandos absolutely cannot deal with this lunatic for the rest of arda
death has not put a damper on fëanor’s unstoppability. he was preoccupied for a long while with the damage done to his sons but with them all out he had a conspicious lack of things to Do
and a bored fëanor is a dangerous fëanor
so yeah. fëanor is less released from the halls of mandos as he is unceremoniously kicked out. mandos refuses to talk about it. the maiar of the halls throw a massive party
this all happens on extremely short notice. as in, manwë announces his release like half a day before it happens
this of course throws his extended family (and a decent proportion of the rest of the continent) into this massive frenzied whirlwind of panic. everybody thought they’d get more warning than this, and nobody knows what’s going to happen next
at the epicentre of this maelstrom is the elf himself. fëanor doesn’t know either, he’s still trying to catch up on everyone he left behind and everything that’s gone down since he died. so much has changed, and he’s still stumbling groggily in the darkness
at some point between his long-practiced apology to finarfin and the maglor encounter everyone’s been dreading, though, he makes an unexpected discovery
he has a daughter now. apparently
her name’s tauriel, she smells like woodsmoke. he first meets her when she wanders into the living room, blinks blearily for a couple of seconds, goes ‘hi dad!’ and immediately falls asleep on his lap
and it’s not like he’s not incredibly stoked to have another child, it’s just how???
the first time he asks this question, the motley collection of relatives and old friends he’s talking to all come to the same conclusion
they can either (a) walk him through the history of tauriel’s growing friendship with and eventual adoption into the least reputable branch of the house of finwë or (b) dump the latest copy of the grand unified tauriel conspiracy theory on him with absolutely no context
considering they’re the hellfamily and friends, they go for the chaos option
it takes fëanor, like, two days to read it. the thing was ridiculously elaborate even before people started competing to come up with the craziest possible theories
the people around him keep the ruse going as long as they can stretch it. eventually celebrimbor takes pity on him, and legolas fills in the details
(legolas currently occupies a position in the fëanorian internal hierarchy not dissimilar to fingon’s. he has no idea how to interpret that)
fëanor also just. talks to tauriel. about how she came, and why she stayed
the next day, fëanor loudly announces to the entirety of tirion that he has a new daughter, her name is tauriel and she’s amazing
she’s been a de facto part of the house for years but this is the first official confirmation of it. the news, and the gossip, spreads all over aman
not that this marks a massive turning point for tauriel. even without a big announcement, she made which side she was on pretty clear back when shit went down
and honestly her life hasn’t changed that much since then. she still spends most of her time exploring noldorin country or chilling in the forest with her silvan friends
this isn’t too uncommon a situation for a member of the house of fëanor. they usually do their own thing, whatever that may be. even nerdanel abandons her house every so often to spend a year or two in the mountains
even in tirion, it’s not that different. she still crashes in the same place, hangs with the same people
she just also occasionally does stuff for :mobster voice: the family
she’s part of the second generation’s extremely overprotective mutual defence web. she has a few responsibilities vis-a-vis the definitely-not-minions. she’s not quite as magnetic as her older brothers, but she’s charismatic enough people tend to both legitimately like and let their guard down around her
she goes to court events sometimes, if she’s in town and in the mood. she’s not virulently allergic to it like celegorm but she doesn’t thrive there the way elrond does. she prefers lower-city forge parties. way more booze, way less bling
(the greenwood elves have stopped needing to bring her along to every political meeting for quote-unquote moral support. everyone knows who she rides with now, and the court bureaucrats tend to give her people whatever they want without the need for extortion)
she’s not the rowdiest of fëanor and nerdanel’s brood, but that’s really not saying much. she’s kicked off the last vestiges of social respectably and indulges fully in her family’s ability to do whatever they want, whenever they want, because who’s seriously going to tell a kinslayer they can’t do something?
a decent proportion of the population of tirion, it turns out. eh, the arguments are always fun
that’s the state of tauriel’s life when fëanor comes back. afterwards - like i said, it doesn’t change terribly much, fëanor rocking valinor to its core notwithstanding
he is massively, intensely supportive of everything she does. she knows that it’s partially that this family is just Like That, but she also gets the vibe he’s overinvesting a little? she’s the only one of his children who doesn’t have a reason to hate him
but they get along fine. he’s had a lot of practice at being a dad, and is trying to improve on his personal faults. his relationship with her is blissfully uncomplicated compared to the mess most of his pre-death bonds are, and while she’ll protect her brothers from him if need be she’ll protect him too when the world is out to get him
there’s this moment at one of those fancy court galas. tauriel’s chatting with some sindarin visitors when something explodes a few rooms away
almost immediately, she locks gazes with curufin, who’s peoplewatching some distance away. they have a conversation conducted entirely in eyeflicks that could be summarised as ‘did he just...’ ‘alas he probably did’
they stride out of the hall together to rescue their idiot dad from the consequences of his terrible decisions
that’s another subtlety to the way the fëanorians work, tauriel is discovering. the siblings hellspawn may be a constant fight cloud of bickering nutbags (with the obvious exception of herself) but they all always out-sane their dad
she keeps learning things like this as the years roll on and her families get closer. she finds silvans having tea with nerdanel, tirion craftselves looking for her in the woods. across both of her worlds, she’s building a posse
(just like her brothers did, long long ago under the light of the trees. when next the host rides to war, there will be those who follow tauriel’s banner)
even legolas has mostly gotten over it. their initial friendship, after all, was founded on them both being chaos children. tauriel is one in a way they called silvan in greenwood and noldorin in aman, fully conscious that the powers that be disapprove of her shenanigans and deliberately and vindictively defying them
legolas’ style is more sindarin, vaguely aware that the rules exist but doesn’t really understand how they apply to him. he did sneak a dwarf up the straight road, after all. him and tauriel got up to so much nonsense when they were kids, and no matter who else she runs with, he’ll always be her best friend
he’ll never be fully comfortable with the literal childhood horror stories she’s taken up with, but for her sake he’s willing to try. they might be scary, but, he’s realising, they can be fun too
(even if he does spend most of their family gatherings hiding behind elrond)
and then, one day...
tauriel doesn’t exactly pine for kíli, but she does kind of regret how it all turned out. she wonders what being in a relationship with him would have been like, sometimes
but he’s a dwarf, and she’s an elf, and she can’t leave the undying lands, and dwarves aren’t supposed to come here. they are sundered until the breaking of the world
when she tells this to fëanor, this massive smug grin spreads across his face. ‘unless’
three hours later, they’ve turned fëanor’s front room into a base of operations. maedhros is on project management, caranthir is on logistics, amras is going down a list of maiar they can strongarm. celebrimbor stops by, looks at the plans on the walls, and, somewhat excitedly, goes ‘are we breaking into the dwarven afterlife???’
yes. yes they are
epilogue:
when the end comes and all elves return to cuivénen, certain people tauriel knew back in middle-earth discover what she’s been doing for the past few ages
they get the full skinny later, after they talk to her and stuff, but the first whisper they hear is ‘tauriel’s been taken in by the fëanorians’
reactions vary. tauriel’s mama, who doesn’t recognise the name, goes ‘the spirits of fire? that’s sounds so much like her, i’m so happy she’s made friends’
tauriel’s mummy, who does recognise the name, is laughing too hard to speak
and thranduil cradles his head in his hands. ‘of course’ he mutters ‘of course she fucking did’
how many branches does an olive tree have? // draco malfoy
Summary: Hufflepuff!reader might be the only person that’s shown Draco some actual human kindness… maybe that’s why he’s so fond. Or maybe it’s the desserts.
Request: do u mind writing a draco malfoy or one of the weasley twins hanging out with (and eventually dating) hufflepuff reader and they always return to their common rooms with baked goods/little notes?
A/N: I thought I’d have a bit of fun with this one bc I’ve never written Draco before and I thrive off of slytherinxhufflepuff so I really hope the draco isn’t too ooc and that this isn’t too long also I diverged a little but I hope you like still ++++ this is less proofread than I would’ve liked
Reader: unspecified Hufflepuff
Warnings: mean draco??
It didn’t surprise anyone, least of all you, how much Draco Malfoy disliked you at first. He had a bit of a reputation and whilst you didn’t wish to speak ill of anybody, everybody you knew considered Draco Malfoy to be spoilt, snot-nosed, selfish, haughty and spiteful. But what you noticed whenever he would provoke Harry Potter, or walk through the corridors alone, or sit studying in the library until the early hours, was how sad he looked sometimes. And so, despite the awful things you’d heard about him, you always felt rather soft when you thought of him. Even when he was being a raging arsehole.
“Hi,” you said, smiling from your seat. You were oddly optimisitc about your first lesson with the Slytherins. “I’m Y/N.”
Draco looked at you as if shocked you were even daring to speak to him, his icy blonde eyebrows drawn down and his eyes stormy. “And?”
You leant back when he turned away, clearing your throat and shuffling the parchment around on the table. You decided it wouldn’t be helpful to remind him he wasn’t your first choice of partner in Muggle Studies, either.
“So, your task is to research ten muggle inventions-“ Professor Burbage began, only to be interrupted by Draco.
“Can’t imagine why they want us to do that,” he snorted, his friends sitting behind you hanging off his every word. “Muggles have never invented anything worthwhile.”
His friends guffawed, shocking the professor. You just frowned, watching how Draco thrived off of the attention with a strange sadness.
You didn’t see him again until around a week later when you retreated to the library for a few hours before curfew. You weren’t looking for him, but it was hard not to spot his platinum hair at a table, alone in the back. Shifting your weight from one foot to the other, you debated just going to an empty table and leaving well enough alone, but then you remembered his sad eyes and your feet carried you over to him before you could stop them.
“Hey,” you said, biting your lip as you stood by one of the empty chairs, holding your books tightly. “Would it be alright if I sat here?”
He looked up at you sharply, the same half-confused, half-outraged expression in his eyes. His gaze was steady on your face for a moment before he huffed, returning to his work.
“If you must.”
You sat with him for hours in complete silence, both of you just doing your work. It wasn’t until the table began to shake with the movement of his elbow that you even looked at him. His face was scrunched up into a scowl as tried to scratch the rest of the ink from his empty pot. The sound of the quill hitting against the glass was loud and you knew Madam Pince would be over sometime soon to scold him. You figured that he’d never ask to use your inkpot, far too proud to ask for help, and so you just slid it over gently so it settled in the centre of the table, your intention obvious. His eyes on you were heavy, even as you tried to work out exactly why you would add Valerian Root to Draught of the Living Dead. The clinking of his quill stopped as he stared at you and despite yourself, you glanced up at him and offered a polite smile before turning back to your parchment.
Draco had no idea what to make of it. As he watched you scribbling on some parchment, confusion settled on his brow. Why, he thought, would a Hufflepuff he barely knew offer to help him? Part of him wanted to shove the inkpot back, too stubborn to accept help from someone like you, but the other part of himself, a part he didn’t get along with all too well, told him to shut up and take it.
And as you looked up, shooting him a brief smile that only served to deepen the crease on his forehead, he gave in and dipped his quill into the inkpot without another word. He tried not to look at you after that, sure you would enjoy seeing Draco Malfoy so weak. He could practically feel the ashamed flush on his cheeks and he hated it. But you could tell, despite his gruff façade, that he was grateful because when he stood up to leave, he stared at you for slightly too long as he placed the inkpot nearer to you and all but ran from the library without a single snarky comment or dirty glance.
Thanks only to your determination, that happened a few more times. Sure, Draco made absolutely certain to bring his own inkpot, but he looked less murderous each time you asked to sit down. One cold night with a bitter wind and a Transfiguration test you’d completely forgotten hounding at your heels, you rushed to the library. You were stopped only once on the way directly outside your common room by one of your favourite house-elves, who shoved a mini-basket of cookies into your hands, insisting that you stay warm in the cold temperatures. Whilst you were still panicking about the test, you couldn’t help but feel warm inside at the gift, a smile lifting your cheeks at how sweet it was. You rushed to your usual table, throwing the basket and your bag onto the desk and meandering through the shelves to find any books you could on the history of Transfiguration. Happy with the eight you’d found, and perhaps a little concerned you’d gone overboard, you retreated back to the table, pleasantly surprised to see a familiar mop of platinum blond.
“Hello, Draco,” you said, smiling as you set the books down. He didn’t look at you, only nodding, his focus on a textbook in front of him. You grinned anyway, enjoying the little routine you’d formed with him. It must’ve been only twenty minutes later when you crunched down on one of the biscuits you’d been given, surprised to meet a pair of grey eyes when you looked back up. He frowned at the cookie in your hand as you smiled bashfully, not intending to be caught.
“Oh,” you said, scolding yourself for being rude. “Would you like one?”
His head shot up at your question, that permanent frown still in place. He didn’t answer at first and you were afraid for a moment that you’d broken one of the unspoken rules of your acquaintanceship; the ones that only Draco seemed to know. To say you were shocked when he nodded very subtly was an understatement, but anyone with half a brain could tell how glad you were as you offered him the basket.
He looked down at the cookie in his long, pale hand as if it would bite him back. Before he ate it, though, he settled his wrists on the edge of the table and stared at you with a curiosity you’d never seen on him before.
“It’s Y/N, right?” he asked, wetting his lips.
“Yeah,” you nodded quickly, stunned that he’d remembered. You watched him think for a moment; you could almost see the cogs turning in his brain as he broke off a piece of the biscuit and brought it to his lips. It was obvious that he was deciding something but you didn’t understand what until he met your eyes again.
“Did you make these?”
His voice was stiff and unsure and you could tell how out of his depth he felt, whether it was saying more than two words to you or attempting small talk that was so unfamiliar you couldn’t say.
“No, one of the house-elves gave them to me.”
“House-elves?” he said, voice full of disgust. You frowned.
“The little creatures that work in the kitchens.”
“I know what they are,” he hissed, scowling. He swallowed harshly when he saw your face fall and for a second, he regretted his venom. “So, you’re- you’re what? Friends with them?”
As abhorrent as the idea clearly seemed to him, you appreciated how conflicted he looked, vindicated slightly at the sight of Draco Malfoy actually considering someone else’s feelings.
“Yep, they’re lovely,” you beamed, stirring something inside him. “And ever so kind.”
He just nodded, biting into the biscuit you’d given him and mulling over what you’d told him. Him saying nothing, you decided, was certainly leagues better than saying something horrible.
When he left that day, you made sure to force him to take a few more cookies, well aware that you couldn’t eat them all on your own and hoping more than anything that he’d accept it as an offering of friendship.
“Take more, please, go on.”
“I don’t…“ he trailed off, looking at you with a guarded expression.
“Please?” you begged, lifting the basket towards him. “For me?”
His eyes darted to yours as he inspected your pouting features and wide eyes, a strange fondness pulling at his chest. The way his mouth curled up ever so slightly before it was replaced with his signature grimace didn’t escape you and you grinned as he grabbed a few more, filling his pockets. He took a couple steps away before stopping short and spinning on his heel to face you.
“Thank you,” he nodded, looking very out of place, his words rushed and foreign. You didn’t mind, though, as he walked away. You just sat there, head in your books and a growing smile on your lips. You’d have to bring more desserts, you thought.
No one had confused Draco Malfoy quite like you. Not even Potter had the same irritating effect on him. And unfortunately, despite his efforts, people were starting to notice.
“Draco, what are you staring at?” Pansy asked him during breakfast, drawing his eyes away from your laughing face, your bright yellow tie.
“Nothing,” he huffed. “What are you looking at?”
Annoyance sparked in him as they laughed at his poor attempt to deflect the question.
“Is it that Hufflepuff you’re always eyeing?” Pansy pressed, an undercurrent of jealousy behind her wary curiosity.
“What?” his eyes flicked back to see you smile at him and once again, a strange feeling flooded his system.
“Don’t be stupid,” he said with much less bite than he usually would’ve. “What would I want with a Hufflepuff?”
As they laughed, moving on to another topic, he asked himself the same thing.
The next few times you saw Draco properly were in the library; he would only talk to you there, lest someone saw you and his precious reputation be ruined. You didn’t care about someone seeing you spending time together, but you let it be given how important it was to him. It was hard to say that it didn’t bother you at all, though, especially with how well you and he seemed to get along, particularly when you brought him treats. First, it was just whatever the house-elves would be kind enough to give you; biscuits here, a slice or two of cake there. When you noticed that Draco seemed to have a taste for chocolate, you started making specific requests, always making sure to give the elves clothes and some company in return. Seeing Draco walk out of the library with full pockets and a barely suppressed smile was the highlight of your day and it had, surprisingly, become an everyday occurrence. You would even go as far as to call you and Draco friends.
“Y/N,” Draco said, frowning as he wrote his Astronomy essay. You hummed, looking up to see his eyes on you. Your heart warmed at how comfortable and relaxed he looked, a far cry from how tense he’d been to start with.
“Do you know which constellation that old bat Sinistra told us to include?”
You rolled your eyes at his name-calling, shaking your head. “Nope, sorry, I’m absolutely hopeless at Astronomy. Haven’t even started the essay.”
He grimaced for a moment before pausing and brushing at the feathers of his quill nervously with his thumb.
“I could help you,” he said, gauging your reaction. “My Father says Astronomy is a subject so useless that even muggles can do it-“ he stopped himself then. He wasn’t quite sure why he cared what you thought of him, but he knew you well enough to know that you wouldn’t appreciate him talking badly about muggles and so, even though everything he’d ever said was just a regurgitation of his Father’s words, he clamped his mouth shut.
“I’m quite good at it,” he said, softer this time. “I’d be happy to teach you a thing or two.”
In all fairness to you, whilst you knew that Draco had the capacity for kindness, you didn’t quite expect him to extend it to you and certainly not enough to answer his offer with anything but a series of blinks. He was growing nervous at your lack of reply, already thinking about how foolish he’d been to even offer. Why was he even hanging around with a Hufflepuff anyways? If his father found out, he would be furious-
“I’d love that,” you said gently, interrupting his downward spiral. He visibly perked up at your response and even his face looked younger as you drew your first full smile from him. You couldn’t help but think that he looked rather more handsome when he smiled.
“Alright,” he said, nodding. “Meet you at the Astronomy Tower tonight?”
He noticed your reluctance, frowning immediately.
“What if we get caught?”
You expected his cocky grin even less than you expected his offer in the first place.
“It’ll be fine.” he said, before his face softened. “Trust me.”
The rest of the day, you tried to convince yourself that you were nervous at breaking curfew and not at the prospect of seeing Draco outside your usual library hours. As you crept towards the Tower, flinching and ducking away from every sound that echoed through the castle corridors, you pulled at your jumper, stretching it over your hands with nervous fingers. You were barely halfway through the doorway when something behind you made a loud thudding noise and you turned, not paying enough attention as you slammed into someone. A squeak left your mouth at the impact but before you could make more of a racket, a hand covered your lips and you were left staring up at Draco Malfoy, shocked that you hadn’t noticed quite how tall he was before.
He looked at you with dark eyes and you realised that even without his hand covering your mouth, you wouldn’t have been able to breathe anyway, not with him looming over you like that. As if it didn’t faze him at all, he pulled his hand away from your mouth to his lips, shushing you gently. You nodded, not trusting your voice. Beckoning you to follow him up the stairs, you shadowed him quietly, distracting yourself with the view. When you reached the top, you lunged towards one of the windows, gasping as you looked at the whole of Hogwarts beneath you.
“It’s beautiful,” you whispered, leaning over the stone windowsill, your face against the wind. Draco didn’t say anything for a moment.
“You look different without your robes.”
You turned to him, surprised to see him watching you so intently. Not knowing what to say, you just smiled. He cleared his throat.
“Let’s get started.”
You started off well-intentioned, listening to him dutifully explain the difference between Ursa Major and Minor, the story of Andromeda and what not, but you couldn’t help but get distracted by the view, the stars spread out around you.
“Are you even listening?” he asked, eyebrows raised. You smiled bashfully at getting caught, feeling your cheeks heat up.
“Of course, I am,” you insisted, placing your palm on his bicep, a touch that didn’t go unnoticed. “Carry on.”
He stared at you for a moment, shaking his head. A fond smile pulled at his lips as he stood up, offering you his hand. You hesitated before taking it, letting him haul you to your feet. With your hands still intertwined, he dragged you over to the edge of the tower, pulling you so you leant on your elbows next to him, your arms touching. It seemed as if you were both avoiding ignoring the feeling fo your palms pressed together.
“That,” he said, pointing up to a series of stars with his free hand. “Is Draco.”
You looked at him as he stared up at his namesake, watching his expression flood with a pride.
“The dragon,” you whispered, eyes widening as his head swung around, leaving the both of you closer together than anticipated. He let himself examine your face, taking in every detail, from your brow to your cheeks to your lips; ever so slowly, memorising every curve.
“I’ve never met anyone like you,” he said, his eyes soft. You bit the inside of your cheek, smiling slightly.
“No one else brings you cakes? That’s a tragedy.”
He huffed a laugh, the corners of his lips curling up.
“I’m inclined to agree.”
do you have a fic where remus confronts Sirius of believing he was the spy (like maybe canon divergence - they all live) and refuses to agree that just because there was a war doesn’t mean he should’ve not trusted him or used the excuse that he’s a werewolf not to believe him
Hi!
I have fics that deal with the suspicions and false accusations during the war! But these do take on a more Fluffy path, and eventually lead to them being understanding and forgiving of each other's behaviour😅
If Tomorrow the World Crumbles
“Well, what am I supposed to bloody think, then?” Sirius shouted back. “You’re obviously keeping things from me! How is this sketchy behaviour going to make anything better? Why couldn’t you just come talk to me, so you could have proven that you’re not-”
“Because I shouldn’t have to proof anything to you!” A hint of pain was seeping through in Remus’s frustration. “All my life I’ve had to proof myself to everyone, and all my life I’ll have to continue proving myself, simply because of what I am, but not to you. Never to you. You’re supposed to believe in me! You’re the one person who’s supposed to be on my side.”
And here's an excerpt from my longer fic
If Only You Knew the Whole Story
He’s sitting in a chair. His arms are handcuffed behind his back and his ankles are chained to the legs of the chair. Protective spells are placed around him, making it impossible to come any closer than half a meter in his vicinity, though there isn’t much he could even do without his wand. His long, dark hair is tied in a messy bun with loose strands falling over his face, and he still has the muggle clothes on he was wearing when he got arrested.
He’d been wearing muggle clothes a lot. When James teased him about it, he told him to go try and ride a motorbike in flapping wizarding robes and then come talk to him. No one particularly minded seeing him in tight fitted muggle clothes anyway, as the man has always been unfairly good-looking.
He looks up as Emmeline enters the room, his grey eyes empty and emotionless.
Sirius Black.
“I didn’t think you’d come back. You seemed rather pissed off when you left the last time.”
“I’m pissed off at you by default. But I did some fact-checking on your previous claims.”
Black rolls his eyes. “If you looked him up in the Animagus register, I could have told you-”
“Actually, I went to a more direct source.”
“Hello, Black.” Remus steps in the room, his eyes focused somewhere on the logo on Black’s worn-out band shirt, deliberately not meeting Black’s eyes, his mask of indifference firmly in place. Emmeline understands his need to not show any emotion in front of Black.
Black’s face, on the other hand, is a whole different story. It’s hard to imagine his eyes were so void of emotion just a moment ago, as a variety of emotions passes over his face.
Disbelief. Hope. Fear. Guilt. Pain.
When he speak, soft and barely audible, his voice sounds so broken that it sends a shock through Emmeline’s body. She can tell Remus feels the same, as his eyes snap up to Black’s face.
“Remus? Please...”
“I messed up, Remus. I messed up so bad. But if only you knew the whole story-”
“You’re going to tell me the whole story,” Remus interrupts, his voice cold and bitter. “The real story.” He opens his palm to reveal the small flask of Veritaserum.
Now, Emmeline was expecting anger. Anger as Black would realise he wouldn’t be able to make up stories anymore. Anger as he saw his plans of manipulating Remus with his lies go up in smoke. Emmeline may have understood shock, that they would actually dare to force him to take the truth potion, or maybe even panic, now that his ploy is officially over.
What Emmeline did not expect, however, was the look of sheer hope on Black’s face, like he’s a dehydrated man who has been wandering the dessert for days and Remus is holding a glass of fresh, cold water.
“Yes,” he says pleading. “Yes, please...”
It completely catches Emmeline off guard, and she can tell Remus is also thrown off. He stares at Black dumbfounded and seems unsure what to do next. He fumbles with the flask, opening it and sliding it across the table towards Black.
As they can’t get near Black with the protective charms surrounding him, Emmeline doesn’t know what they would have done of he had simply refused to drink the potion, but then again, that would have said enough of itself, wouldn’t it? Now, however, Black wastes no time in bending forward, taking the flask between his lips and throwing his head back, gulping the potion down.
After Black has dropped the empty bottle back on the table, he sits motionless in his chair, his eyes closed. Remus is staring at him intently, his mouth in a hard line and his knuckles turning white where he’s gripping the edge of the table. The moment can’t have lasted more than a few minutes, but it feels like an eternity. Despite all her talk about only doing this for Remus, not believing anything will come of it, Emmeline feels nerves coursing through her body. There’s a heavy tension hanging in the room and the air feels thick. Emmeline can only imagine what this moment must be like for Remus.
After what seems like hours, Black slowly opens his eyes. “It wasn’t me.”
So few words hardly more than a whisper, but their impact couldn’t have been greater if he had shouted them in their faces.
Remus’s legs threaten to give out from under him and he supports himself on the table, staring at the wood while gasping for air.
“It wasn’t me, it wasn’t me, it wasn’t me.” Black repeats the words like a mantra.
Remus lifts his head, and upon seeing the pain, hope and confusion on his face, Emmeline wants to run to him, support him and start questioning Black, but at the same time she feels like she needs to stay out of it for now, this needs to be between them.
“What wasn’t you?” Remus breathes. “I need to hear you say it.”
“Everything. Any of it. The murders, the betrayal. Rem, I wasn’t even the Secret-Keeper!”
“But... But...” Remus tries desperately to order his thoughts. “Peter?”
Black nods silently.
Remus shakes his head. “No, no. James insisted! He would never choose anyone but you!”
“No, he wouldn’t.” Black replies as he shifts his gaze downwards, sadness reflecting in his eyes. “Not until I convinced him to. Merlin, I thought I was so clever! A perfect way to throw them off track. Who would even consider it being anyone else?”
“But you told me it was you! Those evenings we spent talking about it...”
“I lied! I lied to you, Remus.”
Remus stares at him for a while. “You didn’t trust me.” It’s not a question.
“We knew there was a spy,” Black says, looking absolutely miserable. “We just didn’t know who.”
“And I was the logical choice,” Remus states. “I assume because I’m a dark creature?”
“Yes. It was because you’re a werewolf.” Black looks Remus straight in the eyes. “Because you have fifteen years of experience keeping secrets and hiding who you are. And you’re so damned good at it! Better than anyone I know. Dumbledore always chose you for the most secret missions. You were the only one amongst us no one had any idea of where they were going or what they were doing.”
“That wasn’t by choice!”
“I know, I know. Remus, you have to understand. We didn’t think you were the traitor, we just couldn’t be absolutely sure that you weren’t the traitor.”
Remus swallows and looks away. “What’s the difference?”
“The difference is that I felt with every fibre of my being that I could trust you and you would never hurt us!” Black speaks. “But at that time, I couldn’t allow myself to feel, I had to think. And logical thinking, shutting off all emotion, said that none of us could say with one hundred percent certainty that it wasn’t you. With Harry’s life at stake, we couldn’t afford to take any chances. It was best not to tell.”
Remus nods, but he’s still not meeting Black’s gaze.
“Remus, please look at me,” Black says earnest. “I need you to know this. We still would have died for you in a heartbeat, Lily, James and me. We still thought the world of you.”
“But I thought the worst of you!” Remus’s breath hitches. “I despised you, wanted to hate you! If I had found you that night, I would have...”
He doesn’t finish his sentence, doesn’t need to.
Black doesn’t look shocked, or even angry. He just looks immensely sad.
“Why wouldn’t you have? I fucked everything up, Remus. I lied to you, I trusted the wrong people, I distrusted the wrong people, I convinced James to take a path that lead straight to his death. And I can’t even do the only thing James asked me to do in case the worst would happen! I can’t even take care of Harry, like I promised I would. I abandoned him in my failed attempt at revenge, another one of my numerous mistakes. I literally can’t think of a single thing I haven’t screwed up these last weeks.”
Remus just stares at him. Only after a long silence, he speaks.
“You really are... you.”
Black just blinks at him.
“I mean, the boy who snuck out of the dorm to keep me company in the hospital wing, the boy who bribed the house elves to make my favourite chocolate cake on my birthday, the man who wanted me to stay with him when I had no place to live and never let me go, the man who once attacked five Death Eaters on his own because one of them had tried to use the Cruciatus curse on me... That person was not a facade, an act or a lie. That person was really you. You’re really that person.”
“Telling you I was the Secret-Keeper was hard for me, as it was the first and only time I ever lied to you, I promise.”
“I know,” Remus slides down in the chair across from Black. “And it’s okay, Sirius. It’s okay.”
Sirius closes his eyes for a moment. As he opens them again to look at Remus, they’re filled with relief.
“I’m sorry,” he whispers. “It’s just... You’re the only person who I couldn’t bear to see me as a monster.”
Remus smiles softly. “Yeah, I know that feeling.”
I hope you still like it, though it might not be exactly what you're looking for!
