Music HC’s for the seven
- I’m gonna start with Jason, who would LOVE britpop (even if it’s not even pop? It’s rock idk what they we on) he would like listening to Pulp and Blur specifically, got in an argument with Percy when he opened some britpop to him and Percy said that Oasis sounded better. Percy got him the Blur: The Best Of CD, but didn’t manage to give it to him.
- Secondly, Annabeth. I think she would know most rock music (thanks to Thalia and Percy) but would wonder more towards the British side. Can see her listening to the Smiths, the Beatles, Radiohead, REM and some recent Arctic Monkeys that Piper made her listen to.
- Piper. I think she’d have the Indie Girl starter package but would listen to anything. Actual diva. Iconic in so levels. Mainly some Gorlillaz, Mitski, Hozier, Arctic Monkeys, (Percy sometimes joins in on their earlier albums, but says that the hanging out in the bar while smoking cigs in the bathroom vibe isn’t really for him) .
- Percy. God he’d be so annoying about it. ROCK MUSIC SNOB. This guy is the single most pretentious gatekeeper you’ve seen. Nicest guy you’ll ever meet suddenly gets so ruthless in mere seconds. Probably walks up to people with band tees to ask them to name three albums. Calls people fake fans, had a man crush on Julian Casablancas ( Annabeth questions that sometimes, he was too earnest while he said that he does has a chance when he got divorced in 2020.) Anyway, Nirvana, (he accidentally called Magnus ‘Kurt Kobain on Annabeth’s side’ once) the Strokes, The white Stripes, Led Zeppelin.,,
- Percy didn’t really mention something about his love for music until him and Annabeth started dating, and was REALLY nervous about it, opening songs and then scrambling to open something else, something better, Annabeth once recommended that he should hang out with the Apollo cabin more, but he demanded that no one aside from her should know this, Annabeth later on learns that Gabe made fun of the music he listened to, and was scared to ramble about it. He taps his fingers to a desk in the rhythms of the songs he likes to calm himself down in class.
- Piper had an AM tumblr 2014 phase, thought he had a crush on Alex Turner, turns out it was on Alexa Chung. She bought Annabeth posters and pins for her birthday, and persists on that Percy should learn to do guyliner so he looks more ‘aesthetic’, Percy doesn’t like it, but goes anyway to spend time with Piper.

Indie Sleaze Icons: Influential Figures Who Defined the 2010s Scene 🎸
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey babe, let’s take a little trip back to the chaotic, glittery, and oh-so-cool world of the 2010s indie sleaze scene. 🌟 This era was all about raw energy, edgy fashion, and a carefree attitude that was perfectly captured by a few iconic figures who basically defined the movement. From musicians to fashion icons and cultural trailblazers, these are the people who made indie sleaze what it was—and why we’re still obsessed with them today. Ready to meet your indie sleaze icons? Let’s go!
1. Alexa Chung: The Ultimate Indie It-Girl
Let’s start with the queen herself, Alexa Chung. She was the epitome of indie sleaze style—always effortlessly cool, with that perfect mix of polished and grungy that we all tried to replicate. From her tomboyish charm to her signature messy hair, Alexa embodied the indie sleaze aesthetic in every way.
Fashion Influence: Alexa’s style was all about mixing vintage pieces with high fashion. Think oversized band tees paired with skinny jeans, Peter Pan collars with leather jackets, and of course, her signature Chelsea boots. She made it look like she just threw everything on in two minutes and walked out the door looking like a rock star.
Cultural Impact: Beyond her style, Alexa was everywhere during the indie sleaze heyday—front row at fashion shows, hosting TV shows, and just generally being the coolest girl in the room. Her influence on the era is undeniable, and she’s still an icon we look to for style inspo today.
2. The Strokes: The Soundtrack of a Generation
You can’t talk about indie sleaze without mentioning The Strokes. Their music was the soundtrack of the scene—gritty, raw, and full of that reckless energy that defined the era. Julian Casablancas and the rest of the band embodied everything that indie sleaze was about.
Musical Influence: With their debut album Is This It, The Strokes brought garage rock back into the mainstream, influencing countless other bands and setting the tone for the indie music scene of the 2000s and 2010s. Their sound was simple yet powerful, with catchy riffs and Julian’s signature drawl that made you want to grab a drink and dance all night.
Style Impact: The Strokes also set the style standard for indie sleaze. Their look was all about skinny jeans, leather jackets, and messy hair—basically the uniform of the era. They made dressing down look cool, and their influence can still be seen in fashion today.
3. Agyness Deyn: The Rebel Model
Next up is Agyness Deyn, the model who broke all the rules and became a fashion icon in the process. With her androgynous look, platinum blonde hair, and punk-rock attitude, Agyness was the face of indie sleaze fashion.
Fashion Influence: Agyness was all about mixing high fashion with street style. She’d pair a designer dress with Doc Martens, or rock a tailored suit with a band tee underneath. Her style was fearless and unpredictable, making her one of the most exciting figures of the indie sleaze era.
Cultural Impact: Beyond fashion, Agyness was a symbol of the indie sleaze spirit. She was bold, unapologetic, and always ahead of the curve. Her influence on the fashion world is still felt today, and she remains a symbol of the rebellious, carefree attitude that defined the era.
4. Karen O: The Indie Rock Goddess
Karen O, the lead singer of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, was another powerhouse of the indie sleaze scene. Her wild stage presence and eclectic style made her a standout figure in the world of indie music and fashion.
Musical Influence: Karen O’s voice and energy were electric. Tracks like “Heads Will Roll” and “Maps” became anthems of the indie sleaze movement, with their mix of punk rock edge and emotional depth. Her performances were legendary—full of raw emotion and untamed energy that captured the essence of the era.
Style Impact: On stage, Karen O was a fashion icon in her own right. She was known for her daring outfits—think neon bodysuits, metallic dresses, and crazy headpieces. She wasn’t afraid to push boundaries, and her style inspired a generation to embrace their wild side.
5. Sky Ferreira: The Pop Rebel
Sky Ferreira burst onto the scene with her edgy pop sound and grungy style, quickly becoming a darling of the indie sleaze crowd. She was the perfect mix of pop princess and rock rebel, with a look and sound that perfectly captured the contradictions of the era.
Musical Influence: Sky’s music was a blend of pop, rock, and electronic influences, with lyrics that were both vulnerable and defiant. Songs like “Everything Is Embarrassing” and “You’re Not the One” became indie anthems, with their catchy hooks and dark undertones.
Style Impact: Fashion-wise, Sky was all about messy hair, smudged eyeliner, and a wardrobe that mixed glam with grunge. She made dressing down look effortlessly cool, and her style continues to inspire today’s generation of indie kids.
6. Dev Hynes (Blood Orange): The Genre-Bending Innovator
Dev Hynes, also known as Blood Orange, was a key figure in the indie sleaze music scene, known for his genre-bending sound and eclectic style. His music pushed boundaries, blending elements of R&B, pop, and indie rock to create something entirely new and fresh.
Musical Influence: Dev Hynes was a prolific songwriter and producer, working with everyone from Solange to Florence Welch. His solo work as Blood Orange was equally influential, with albums like Cupid Deluxe and Freetown Sound becoming staples of the indie music scene.
Style Impact: Dev’s style was just as eclectic as his music. He was known for his mix of high fashion and streetwear, often seen in oversized blazers, vintage tees, and statement accessories. His look was as unique and boundary-pushing as his sound.
Final Thoughts, Babe: The Legacy Lives On
The indie sleaze scene of the 2010s was a magical time—full of raw energy, fearless fashion, and unforgettable music. These icons weren’t just influencers; they were the heart and soul of a movement that defined a generation. And while the indie sleaze era may have officially ended, its influence lives on in today’s fashion, music, and culture.
So next time you throw on a vintage band tee, smudge on some eyeliner, and blast The Strokes, know that you’re channeling the spirit of these indie sleaze legends. Keep the vibe alive, babe, and let’s celebrate the icons who made it all happen! 🎉

Indie Sleaze: 5 item shopping list
My non-negotiable 5 clothing items to live your indie sleaze truth, written as 2000s/2010s fashion historian.
Ballet Flats
Worn by school-teachers and it girls alike, ballet flats have always been a staple in fashion history, especially in the late 2000s and 2010s. For a first time wearer a simple black flat is a safe bet as it can be paired with anything, but if you want to sleaze it up, opt for a metallic or glitter variation. Something to note about indie sleaze fashion is that the more extra it feels, the better it looks, so don't hold back on cool, funky, flats. These can be found in thrift stores, department stores, and all over Amazon.
Metallic Fabric
Since the dawn of rave/party culture, glamorous lamé fabrics have used for just about every article of clothing possible. Cheaper spandex alternatives rose to popularity as The Cobra Snake era partying merged into mainstream. Shiny red leggings paired with a black cropped tank was peak casual 2010s sleaze attire. A great place to find styles like this is Los Angeles Apparel aka American Apparels re-brand. Though they no longer sell the fun colored disco pants and shorts, the lamé collection offers a variety of shiny colorful items with that trustworthy AA quality. Other places to look are party supply stores, poshmark/depop/ebay, rave shops, and of course Amazon.
Ultra Feminine Dresses
One of the most underrated pioneers of indie sleaze fashion is model and t.v. personality Alexa Chung. While Alexa is often grouped with the Twee (shopping list coming soon) and hipster aesthetics of the 2010s her ability to blend soft girlish dresses with last nights makeup allows for an uber sleazy effect. Mini shifts, polka dotted a-lines, and vintage baby-dolls all work as long as you pair them with unkempt hair and grungy tights to keep the edge, bonus points if your dress has a peter pan collar or your tights have rips. You can find these practically anywhere but start at your local thrift store as they usually have large selections of outdated dresses that were popular during this time period. Alternatively look at department stores, vintage/antique markets, and you guessed it Amazon.
Ringer Tee's and Shorts
Before athleisure was an over-saturated mess of "flare leggings" and Lululemon we took inspiration from student athletes everywhere with the iconic ringer tee's and ringer shorts. Getting their name from the contrasting ring of fabric outlining the seams of the article, ringer style pieces were seen everywhere and worn with everything. Both such versatile basics that could be kept casual or dressed up that you might see a ringer tee with a skirt, or ringer shorts with stockings and a blouse. Los Angeles Apparel has great options for both the shirts and the shorts, places like Walmart and Target often carry ringer shorts, and Forever 21 with great ringer tees, and as always Amazon.
Stockings/Tights
It doesn't matter if they're black, white, multicolored, fish-netted, or opaque, stockings always find a way to elevate a basic look and is often what takes an outfit from mainstream to indie sleaze. Don't worry about buying a super nice quality pair as stockings look best with ripping seams and enormous holes. But don't tear them with a fork like those tiktok girls did in 2020, it screams try hard as a real indie sleaze girl would rip them via dancing, curb sitting, and drunken stumbling. Just like the dresses, you can find tights anywhere. However I don't recommend secondhand as they are technically an undergarment and it's hard to ensure the level of cleanliness.

Chain of Influence from Alexa Chung's IT: Heathers and Beetlejuice
Alexa Chung used to be a British TV host, model, and the IT girl of the 2010s. Ballet flats, hot pants, cashmere cardigans, and statement sunglasses made her a modern fashion icon. During a time when skinny jeans, neon accessories, and flower crowns were a thing, the IT girl stood out with ahead-of-her-time style choices. She definitely was one of the first well-known women that I sourced my creative inspiration from.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"IT"
In 2013, Alexa released her debut book IT, featuring her drawings, style influences from film and music and witty advice. This pastel pink, 'cultural reset' of a book, catered to young, aspiring "It" girls and wannabe Vogue Editors. Despite receiving critiques akin to a "wasted opportunity", IT marked the sweet beginning of character development for my 13-year-old self. The book led me on a transformative journey, unveiling my taste in music, film, and fashion - a chain of influence, if you will.
Tumblr media
HEATHERS (1988)
One of the films that started my endless love for cinema and marked the chain of influence, was Heathers (1988) - directed by Michael Lehmann and written by Daniel Waters. A satirical and macabre cult classic about a high school, where obnoxious jocks rule and the mean girls are all called Heather - until Veronica (Winona Ryder) and her mysterious boyfriend (Christian Slater) plot to exterminate every bully. Pair a cinematic legend (our girl Wino) with a sexy hunk that is Christian Slater, and you have yourself an 80s classic. Watching this film when you’re 14 years old, in your secret world (my room) on a mini laptop was a transformative experience. In a sense that, in that moment, I fully understood the magic that cinema held, and all I knew was that I wanted more. My eyes could not get enough of the cinematography, the costumes and the beautiful young actors - all while the haunting Syd Straw’s voice sang Que Sera, Sera (strongly advisable to put this song on while reading this post).
Tumblr media
The film itself tells a classic tale of relational agression between high school girls. In the words of Lyn Mikel Brown, or her book of the same name - Girlfighting (2003), the author argues that for quite some time, soap-operas, films, and reality TV had only focused on women who are in competition with one another. Heathers falls right into that category. Its main focus is Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) - one of the Heathers clique, who finally gets tired of being an accomplice to other school kids’ misery. She has this line in the film: “I don’t really like my friends. It is like they are people I work with and our job is being popular”. It is the moment where Veronica foreshadows her involvement in the downfall of her mean friends. The irony of the twist is as absurd as it gets - a kind-hearted girl hates to see mean girls bullying everyone, so she turns to murder to end the meanness altogether.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
COSTUMES
Iconic, voluminous hair, fitted checkered jackets with shoulder pads, midi grandma skirts, coloured stockings and none other, than bitchy attitudes! Every shot of Heathers is filled with endless outfit inspiration, curated by Rudy Dillon. Oh, how fun would it have been to dress like that in high school. I love how this kind of fashion evokes a nostalgic longing for a time before I was even born. From then on out, you could not catch me leaving a vintage clothing store without an 80's padded jacket.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Guessing who I went as for Halloween in 2014 would be easy. I put my grey skirt on, borrowed my grandpa’s ashy blue t-shirt, covered my face in fake blood and bought a paper cigar from Tiger. It was magical. I walked around saying “What’s your damage, Heather?” - sadly, no one understood the reference back then and I ended up really scaring my mum. I might have been better at Maths, had I not been rewatching Heathers every other evening. However, no regrets. 2 + 2 is still 4, forever till the end of time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beetlejuice (1988)
IT's chain of influence continued naturally when I decided to explore Winona’s earlier work. The first one that came to mind was Winona’s breakthrough film 'Beetlejuice' (1988), crafted by the extravagant auteur Tim Burton, who is renowned for the gothic and fantastical settings in his work. The contrast-heavy cinematography in Burton’s mise-en-scène is highly influenced by German Expressionism, an art movement that emerged in Germany in the early 20th century. The most predominant aspects of this movement include distorted sets, angular or weirdly-shaped architecture, and a dark, frightening atmosphere.
The film tells the story of a recently deceased couple (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin), who start haunting their own home after a new family moves in. In an attempt to scare away the living occupants, the couple summons a mischievous spirit named Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton) by saying his name three times. The narrative takes an intriguing turn with the introduction of Winona Ryder's character, Lydia, who, along with her parents (Catherine O’Hara and Jeffrey Jones), becomes entangled with the supernatural world. Winona Ryder delivers a captivating performance as Lydia, portraying a goth teenage girl with the ability to see the dead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CINEMATOGRAPHY
Cinematographer Thomas E. Ackerman fully realised Burton’s ominous vision for the film. Every single shot is like a surrealist painting - a true feast for the eyes. Even if one does not find the film’s plot appealing, the visual aesthetic will still definitely satisfy one’s artistic hunger. Ackerman's attention to detail and use of lighting contribute to the film's haunting atmosphere, making it a visual masterpiece.
Beetlejuice vs. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
As mentioned previously, the influence of German Expressionism is evident in Burton’s work, and in my opinion, especially in Beetlejuice. The film has striking visual similarities to, arguably, one of the first horror films, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), directed by Robert Wiene. The film follows a somnambulist who makes horrifying predictions of future events. I watched it during my first year of film studies, and I have to say, I was utterly spellbound. The fact that a film without any sound can be that spine-chilling, still blows my mind.
The distorted corridor in Beetlejuice mirrors the endless, distorted corridor in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. It evokes a sense of claustrophobia, almost like an optical illusion. The surrealist, angular structure of the Caligari corridor seamlessly fits into Beetlejuice, capturing the dreamlike, or rather nightmarish atmosphere.
In the following comparison shots, we can even identify a door with a diagonal line in Burton’s still, and the exact same shaped detail (window/door) on the house in Wiene’s still. Furthermore, there is a black silhouette of a man in the background, seemingly holding a broom in Burton’s shot. Similarly, in Caligari’s shot, there is a man wearing black, holding what appears to be a cane.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The following two shots sparked an 'aha' moment for me. In one, the green light and the appearance of a dead bride with a tulle veil emerge from the darkness. In another, there is a muted green light covering the room, and a girl sleeps in a white nightgown, reminiscent of a wedding dress, on a bed adorned with tulle sheets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE DINNER
There's a campy (and even a bit meta) dinner scene in Beetlejuice, making it one of the most standout moments in cinema to date. It features Lydia, her parents, and their friends. In an attempt to scare them into leaving, the deceased couple (the Maitlands) and Betelgeuse possess the guests. One by one, they start moving involuntarily and start to sing Harry Belafonte’s 'Day-O (The Banana Boat Song),' in his distinctive voice. I truly love this artistic decision because it cleverly uses dark humour and absurdity to dilute the frightening topic of spirits and afterlife.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As I reflect on this chain of influence, I think of it as the epitome of 'one thing led to another.' I love that I could delve into Winona Ryder's creative universe and discover life-altering cinematic classics as a young girl. This, however, is just one of the many discoveries I made as a 13-year-old reading Alexa's book. More is yet to come...

how to live like it's 2014 again
If you're anything like me, you're nostalgic for everything. I am constantly wishing to be somewhere else or in some time else. I'm nostalgic for the 60's (I was born in 2001), nostalgic for the early 2000's (pop is just not the same), and most of all–I am nostalgic for 2012 to 2016. I think it is widely agreed that these years, especially on Tumblr, were the last best years many of us have ever had. I was a baby, still in middle school and just 15 years old in 2016. But wow, what a time to be alive. Music, movies, TV, pop culture, fashion, the internet–the world was a better place.
I have been toying with the idea of exiting mainstream society (as best I can) for sometime now. I've been thinking, "Is it possible to live in another era while stuck in the constantly evolving 2024?" Can I abandon social norms or things of "the time" and just live like it's 2014 again?
I've thought about what this would mean, what it would look like. Only listening to Halsey, Calvin Harris and Marina. Splurging at Victoria's Secret and wearing the iconic Tease perfume at all times. What's TikTok? You don't use Valencia on your Instagram posts? I'm obsessed with WeHeartIt. Look at my new Penny board!
Alternatively, I could take the Arctic Monkeys, soft grunge, American Apparel and Marlboro cigarettes route. All black, watching AHS Coven and wondering if I have secret witchy powers too.
I think where all these feelings come from is that the current state of the world is just not feeling so good (to put it nicely). The world is accelerating at a speed I do not want to keep up with. Social media and technology are great but it has literally become this crushing weight. "Just delete social media then." Yeah fair. I guess I just feel so disconnected from my life. From my real life. Like I spend so much of my time venturing into other worlds I've made up in my head. Like 2014 Tumblr. It's not here anymore, it's gone, but I live there. A part of me is still there.
I'm like 12 or 13 years old. Was still a competitive cheerleader, which I regrettably quit when I got to high school. I spent everyday after school with my friends, making video stars or doing gymnastics in the field. We would walk around our neighbourhood, talking about god knows what and enjoying every minute of it. I looked at the future and it could be anything. I could be anyone and do anything I wanted. I feel like that's what I really want. Maybe I miss the music and clothes and vibes of that era buy what I'm really craving is how purely simple and free I felt, how connected I felt to my own life.
Now I'm 22, soon to be 23. Graduating college soon, heading into my big girl job, big girl career. Totally terrified and also excited. But I spend my time alone, so much time alone. My social battery is always empty, I rarely catch up with friends. When I do, we always have to be doing something. Dinner, drinks, movies, parties, dancing, classes. It's never, just come over let's hangout. And I get it, we're young adults, we are supposed to be doing stuff, we are meant to be out and about living our best lives. I guess I just want it to feel different. I want it to feel like it used to.
Okay sooooo.
This is how to live like it's 2014.
Talk to your friends, often and without any agenda. Create the ultimate playlist, this one's pretty good:
Binge CW shows and trashy reality TV. Totally freak out when someone says you look like Violet from AHS (this actually happened to me at work the other day and I couldn't stop smiling). Say screw the trends and wear some skinny jeans and those Alexander McQueen ankle boots, Alexa Chung approved. Get off your phone and be alive now. It's 2014, you don't have a worry in the world.

and even after so many years the infamous Alexa Chung letter keeps on winning lol I bet it pisses pauline off that she still hasn't achieved the ´icon girfriend´ status even after cosplaying her boyfriend´s obsession.

later life jane birkin is everything i want to be when i'm older honestly
as i'm looking at photos and watching interviews i notice she was constantly smiling, didn't obsess over looking as young as possible, dressed in a way that brought HER joy and was always unapologetically herself. truly beautiful from the inside out.
ironically i was just saying this to someone about brigitte bardot like two days ago and i was like "if any celebrity death is going to hit me like a ton of bricks and affect me personally it'll be hers" but it didn't even occur to me how that would apply to jane too. i feel like seeing so many fashion icons like alexa chung and kate moss looking up to her in the 2000s makes her feel much closer to my generation than she actually was. i mean the hipster/twee aesthetic that dominated every high street in 2008-2013 would have never existed if it wasn't for her, and that's just talking about her influence as a style icon alone. she deserves to be remembered for so much more than just her eponymous handbag.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Indie sleaze is all about attitude, style, and embracing a touch of rebellious glamour. These it-girls didn’t just follow trends—they set them, becoming the ultimate style icons of their time. Here’s a look at some of the most iconic figures of the indie sleaze scene and how their unique style continues to inspire.
1. Alexa Chung: The Queen of Effortless Cool 👑
Alexa Chung is the quintessential indie it-girl. With her signature blend of vintage-inspired looks and casual chic, she became a symbol of effortless cool. Here’s a breakdown of her iconic style:
Vintage-Inspired Dresses: Alexa is known for her love of vintage dresses. Think retro prints, A-line silhouettes, and high necklines. She effortlessly combines these with modern accessories for a look that’s both nostalgic and fresh.
Layering Like a Pro: Alexa’s layering game is always on point. She pairs oversized blazers with skinny jeans, and adds a quirky touch with patterned tights or retro boots. Her ability to mix and match different textures and styles is what makes her look so distinctive.
The Perfect Messy Hair: Alexa’s tousled hair is a key part of her look. It’s all about embracing a bit of messiness and natural texture, giving her an effortlessly chic vibe that’s so quintessentially indie sleaze.
Style Tip: Channel Alexa Chung’s look by mixing vintage finds with contemporary pieces. Don’t forget to keep your hair a little tousled and relaxed for that perfect indie vibe.

Alexa Chung, the last great rockstar girlfriend
Yesterday, once upon a time when twitter was't that much of a prison for chronically online people like me, my For You timeline started to show me arctic monkeys tweets and then specifically some Alex Turner and Alexa Chung nostalgic posts, and it remind me of a time in my teenage years (mind you now i'm a teenage girl in her twenties) when i was obssesed not only with the band and Alex Turner, but also a little bit with Alexa Chung herself. I now started to think about the whole rockstar gf aesthetic, and even tho i don't really deep dived on it, i know how idolized it is to be one but... there's really rockstar gfs now that people pay attention? And yes, i know there's not that many rock bands to behind with.
So i would can Alexa Chung the last great rockstar girlfriend, she already had a career and a lot of connections when she met Alex, but, maybe because of her charisma or her fashion status, i really think there wasn't any girlfriend of a rockstar after Alexa that had her impact. This feeling may be because of how iconic their relationship was, i don't know, maybe.
