The Forgotten Queen (Part 2)
Book: A Courtesan of Rome
Pairings: MC x Marc Antony, MC x Cassius
Summary: When Marc Antony pardons Lysandra for her crimes against Julius Caesar, he gives her the choice of either staying in Rome or returning to Gaul. Scared for her life, she makes the decision of leaving Rome-and those she loved.

***
The sun glared down on her as she stood in front of Cassius’s front door. Her resolve fractured a bit. Lysandra’s heart ached for what she was about to do, but not enough for her to run away. It wasn’t enough for her to change her mind and decide to stay in Rome with him.
Steeling herself, she took a deep breath and knocked on the door. The pattering noises of feet grew louder as someone drew closer to the entrance, then the door opened. A servant girl looked at Lysandra with shock. With hasty movements she welcomed her inside, “He’s in his room, domina, I can sh-”
“Thank you, but there is no need. I know the way.” She brushed pass the servant and made her way to Cassius’s bedroom.
She stopped at the entrance of his room when she saw that he was asleep. Lysandra frowned as she had an internal battle with herself. She could leave now and not have to say goodbye to him personally. Sabina had already offered to update her on Cassius when they wrote to each other; Lysandra could write a note to Cassius and leave it with Sabina to give to him. Lysandra looked at him as he slept. She could leave.
He shuddered in his sleep and pain clenched Lysandra’s heart. No, she couldn’t just leave. She wanted to be with him in this moment, when he needed comfort the most. Pushing herself off from the wall, she crossed to the other side of the room to him. Slowly, she sat down onto his bed, trying not to disturb him. Up close she could see the worry lines framing his face. Saw how they aged him. In his sleep he was truly vulnerable. He could tell her that he was fine when he was awake, but seeing him like this she knew the truth. Lysandra couldn’t help but blame herself for his worry. Whenever he would ask her what he should do about Caesar, she pushed her own agenda. She told him that violence was the only way to stop Caesar. She made him change his ideals for her.
She had corrupted him.
She had turned his soul black.
She was the reason why he had fell from grace.
She would hate herself forever for extinguishing his light.
He mumbled something in his sleep, and even though his words were incoherent she could still sense the fear in them. Lysandra wasn’t surprised that he was sleeping in the middle of the day, she had come to fear the dark as well.
“It’s okay. You’re safe with me,” she whispered to him as she slowly sat down, the bed creaking slightly. Seeing him asleep softened her heart, his handsome face truly mesmerized her. She was tempted to run her hand along his face. To run her thumb over his full bottom lip, over the creases around his eyes, along his rosy cheeks.
But the longer she gazed at him, the more it occurred to her that she would never see him again. She leaned in closer to him, to brush his hair out of his eyes. He jolted awake at the touch. His eyes widened with alarm as his hand closed around her wrist.
Lysandra tried not to show her surprise at his reaction. Instead she smiled reassuringly, “It’s okay, Cassius. It’s me. I’m here.”
“Lysandra,” her name came out in a breath before he reached to kiss her. She could feel the desperation in his kiss but she didn’t return the fervor. She decided then that this would be the last time she would let him kiss her. She wanted their last kiss to be soft and sweet, she wanted something that was the complete opposite of what she was. To pretend that she was as great as Cassius thought she was. So she kissed him slowly before pulling away.
She grinned down at him, her knuckles grazing his cheek, “Go back to sleep, you look terrible.”
He gave a startled laugh before his expression turned serious, “Will you stay with me?”
She nodded, “Of course.”
Cassius pulled her down gently next to him as he lay back down. She wrapped an arm around his torso and draped one of her legs over his. Once she was comfortable she rested her head over his chest, as he pulled the blanket up to cover them both. The gentle rhythm of his heartbeat nearly lulled her to sleep like a lullaby. Forever the song of her dreams.
“I wish I could forget,” Cassius said quietly. Lysandra looked up at him in a daze before snapping back into reality, quickly recognizing the sorrow and horror written all over his face. Lysandra knew that look all too well; it was the same look she had seen in the mirror. But she remembered that she hadn’t felt that pain when she created her song earlier that day. She wanted to share it with him, so that for a moment he could be happy. “I wrote a song today, would you like to hear it?”
“I would love to.” Sunlight filtered through the drawn curtains, reflecting off of the gold ring he had given her. The light illuminated his face. He looked like a sun god when he smiled at her. Like he had made the sun shine on them alone. She pretended that Apollo would shed a light on them forever.
Lysandra closed her eyes, letting the calm that had washed her clean earlier overtake her, and she began to sing.
When she was finished, she slowly opened her eyes to see that Cassius was just opening his as well. “That song Lysanda… I don’t know how to describe it… it felt like it set me free. I wanted to forget everything and for a moment I did.”
He met her gaze with wonder.
She smiled cheekily at him, “I hope it didn’t make you forget me.”
Cassius kissed her forehead. He smiled sincerely at her, “You’re like a song, Lysandra. I could never forget you.”
Lysandra beamed at him, she opened her mouth to tell him something but the words died on her lips. The words slipped from her thoughts…
“No one will remember your name, Princess of Gaul. I’ll make sure of it.”
“Lysandra? Are you alright? Lysandra-”
Cassius’s voice brought her out of her memory, but it was too late. Her mood was spoiled once again. What’s worse, she remembered why she had came here in the first place. Frowning, Lysandra pulled herself out of Cassius’s embrace. She could feel him watching her, confusion radiated off of him. She refused to meet his gaze. “I have to go,” she mumbled.
Cassius sat up in his bed warily as Lysandra stood up and straightened her dress. She pulled her hood tighter around her. Lysandra knew that Cassius had suspected that she was hiding something from him. It was still painful when he asked, “You’re not returning to the scholae, are you?”
She tried to control her heartbeat before she answered. Gods. “No, I’m not returning to the scholae,” was all that she had managed to say. Composing herself, she tried again. “I’m going home. To Gaul.”
When she finally lifted her head to look at him, she saw that he was surprised with her news. She rushed on to say, “Antony let me go unpunished. He even gave me the option to stay in Rome or return to Gaul.”
Cassius’s eyes widened at that. Then his jaw slackened.
“I-I would rather rebuild my tribe than try to make a life here.” I would rather rebuild my tribe than try to make a life here with you. She didn’t have to say those words out loud for him to understand what she meant. She wanted to tell him that she loved him. That in another life she would have chosen him. If she had felt like she was safe in Rome she would have stayed with him. But she knew that she would never be safe in Rome. Even though Antony had pardoned her, she didn’t trust him enough to uphold his promise.
There was no doubt in her mind that he would make her life difficult. She could already imagine him smirking at her when they crossed paths while he had another woman on his arm. She could picture him not blessing her baby during Vulcanalia just to spite her. Her heart ached when she thought of Artemis picking Antony over her. Of him demanding that she give Artemis back to him. She couldn’t live like that! She wouldn’t let him her control her like that. Living in Rome while Antony was alive would be torture and Lysandra was done living in fear.
She needed her freedom more than she needed Cassius’s love. Gaul meant freedom, Rome meant imprisonment. She hoped that Cassius understood that. Cassius was the only thing she had in Rome. That paled in comparison to what she would have in Gaul: her family, her tribe, her best friend. She would rather be the chief of a forgotten tribe than be the wife of a fallen senator. He had to understand that.
Please understand that.
Lysandra stepped up to Cassius, cupping his cheek in her hand. Her voice was just above a whisper, “Cassius?”
Cassius shook his head slightly, eyes blinking rapidly. It looked like he was trying to wake up from a bad reverie. He drew his head away from her, his whole expression was one of angst. It took a few moments before he replied, “I don’t know what to say… Lysandra, I-”
“Cassius, I do care for you. I tried so hard not to but deep down I knew. I always knew that I l-”
Cassius’ eyes lit up. Lysandra stopped herself. She wouldn’t tell him that he was the love of her life. She wouldn’t tell him her true feelings. Or what she truly thought of him. That she believed that no man had compared to him. That no man had made her want to sigh when she saw him. How his green eyes filled her with tranquility when she looked into them.
She redirected her words, despite Cassius fully knowing what she was about to say. His posture slackened once he realized that she wasn’t going to declare her love for him. He nodded, letting her know that he would listen to whatever she had to say and not interrupt her.
“I never expected you. You walked into my life as a patron, and somehow you became something more to me. And you were so different from me. You were sweet, and gentle, and-and-and I don’t know how you brought down my defenses. Before you, I never thought I would want to marry and have children. I never thought I would have what my parents had. All of a sudden I wanted that with you, Cassius.”
Lysandra paused for a moment, pondering her words. Surprised that she had even admitted that to him. Even though her mother had told her that her greatest wish for her was to find true love, Lysandra never thought it would happen. She hadn’t had a lover prior to the invasion of Gaul, nor did she have any strong feelings for anyone either. She hadn’t realized how strong lust was until she had kissed Marc Antony. But that lust faded in comparison to the love she had felt when Cassius smiled at her. To fall in love with Cassius, a Roman no less… it had to be orchestrated by the gods.
But it didn’t matter what the gods wanted, all that mattered was what Lysandra had wanted. She wouldn’t let anything stop her from achieving her dreams. Not even love, not even Cassius. “But you weren’t part of my plan. It was always my goal to go back to Gaul. That is my dream. And your dream Cassius, your dream is Rome.
“And I’m choosing Gaul over Rome.” She closed her eyes and took a deep breath before opening them again. “I don’t want to lose you, Cassius, but I need to choose Gaul over you.”
Cassius was silent for a moment. He reached out to tuck a strand of black curls away from her face. He looked at her earnestly as one of his hands cupped the nape of her neck while the other grazed her cheek. “You will never lose me, Lysandra. I’ll track the sun, I’ll gaze at the stars, I’ll climb mountains and cross rivers just to be with you.” Her whole body softened at his words. Her heart sped up, then slowed down to a dreamy rhythm. She imagined Cassius waking early to see the sunrise, looking over the horizon for her. Of him searching the night sky for her. Of him making the journey from Rome to Gaul.
She leaned in closer to him, but stopped herself. How desperately she wanted him. To be with him. She fantasized about what would happen if she had allowed herself to love Cassius the way she had wanted to love him. They would go to the lake together. He would write his poetry and she would write songs. Then one day they would take their children to that spot. Tears pricked her eyes as she thought of the life she would never have with him. But she couldn’t allow herself to become enchanted with what could have been.
He reached for her hands. Once they were entangled in his, he kissed hers and rested them against his heart, “Lysandra, I lo-”
“No, don’t say that.” She loved to hear those words too much. Pulling her hands out of his grip, she stepped away from him. She could have sworn that he smiled sadly at her.
Why couldn’t he be Gallic? Had he been born into her tribe, she would never have to choose between the two. But he wasn’t and now it was time for their story to come to an end.
It was time to let him go.
“Don’t come to Gaul, don’t come looking for me.” Though a piece of her died, she told the biggest lie she had ever told a patron, “I don’t want to see you again.” Her fingers fumbled over her ring as she tried to remove it. Momentarily getting stuck on her knuckle before she yanked it off.
She thrust the ring at him. He stared back at it, shaking his head, “No.”
“Take it,” she held the ring closer to him, whispering urgently, frantically. Borderline hysterical, “Take it.”
But he didn’t make a move to grab it, still insisting that he wouldn’t take it back. Her whispers grew more frantic, more chaotic, until she became frustrated.
“Take. The. Ring. Cassius!” She reached for his hand, and pried his fingers open. Slapping the ring into his open palm, turning his skin bright red. The smack echoed throughout the room.
Cassius was incredulous, “You told me moments ago that you wanted a life with me and now you’re telling me that you never-”
Lysandra snapped, “I’m a courtesan, Cassius! I say whatever people want me to say! I’ve been doing that with you for months!
“I did that to Antony and you knew it.” She crooned tauntingly at him, “So what made you think that I didn’t do it to you? What made you think that you were above being a courtesan’s pawn. What made you think that I could have possibly loved you?” A cruel laugh, “What made you think that I would have married you.”
From the corner of her eye, she saw the sky darkening through the curtains. The room was soon cast in shadows, Cassius’s face with it. A muscle ticked in his jaw, his eyes no longer held any warmth for her, no love. Good, she thought. Make him think that he disgusted her so that he would hate her. Just like she did with Antony.
Her gaze dropped to the ring in his hand. It had lost all of its luster. It had shined so bright, now it was dim. Not even Apollo’s light could save them from the darkness she caused.
“You were a fun distraction, but that was all,” she quipped with a nonchalant shrug before turning away from him. “I wish you well, domine.” His gaze burned her as she sauntered out of his room, out of his villa, out of his life.
Lysandra waited until she was a few blocks away from Cassius’s villa before she found an alcove near the market to duck inside of.
She slumped down it, her hand going to her mouth as she tried to stop the tears from coming, trying to stop the whimper that threatened to escape from her lips.
She had no regrets about choosing Gaul over Cassius, but she hated that she had to choose at all. Hated how she had left him. By turning him against her, making him believe that there had never been anything between them, when in reality loving him was the one thing she did right. It was the only way to convince him to let her go, she told herself. But maybe she didn’t have to let him go.
Maybe she could have convinced him to run away with her, Rome was in chaos and Antony…
Antony would want revenge.
There was no hope in her heart that Cassius would be as fortunate as she was. And if he were, that fortune wouldn’t last for long. It couldn’t. Surely he would be punished for what he did to Caesar. Antony was and always will be his enemy.
Even though Antony had decided to negotiate with the Senate for peace, she didn’t believe that he was sincere about it. She remembered how Lena had told her and Xanthe to never trust that powerful men would choose peace over battle. She didn’t trust that Antony would uphold his promise. He was too ambitious for peace.
Then there were rumors that Octavian was to return to Rome soon…
Anxiety overtook Lysandra, clawing at her heart and making her feel ill. Cassius was in danger and she left him. She had never even told him that she loved him. He would die believing that she hated him.
Her nails dug into the stone at her back before she pushed herself from the wall. When she looked up, she stopped in her tracks.
Her blood ran cold.
Antony was here.

CLEOPATRA If it be love indeed, tell me how much. MARK ANTONY There's beggary in the love that can be reckon'd. CLEOPATRA I'll set a bourn how far to be beloved. MARK ANTONY Then must thou needs find out new heaven, new earth.
For the Halloween Prompt:
Should Percival be Antony or Julius Caesar to Credence’s Cleopatra? Alternately, Credence is Antony.
[Warning: minor scene of Credence/Grindelwald attempted noncon, defined as a creepy pass of pressuring.]
Grad school is kicking my ass so I’ve literally only managed to push all this out. It’s completely unedited and unrevised, so I apologize – but I’m way past the deadline so I feel like I need to get something out to you! I’ll probably go back over this during winter break [hopefully by then I’ll be able to focus on all this writing instead of thesis and platform and portfolio writings instead].
Annual Humanities Division Halloween Haunt!
The garish orange was blinding against the dark black background of the gaudy poster and made his eyes hurt. Furry brown bat cut outs clashed against the construction paper, fluttering off the sides as a silver cauldron of green bubbles frothed and spilled along the bottom edge. It was a horrifying eye sore – with several others posted up and down the corridor, garish pieces slathered together as if an embodiment of the holiday itself threw up all over the walls of the hallway. He had spotted a few others in the other buildings as well, dangling off community boards and hanging precariously next to unsuspecting classroom doors. He had even caught a glimpse of similar atrocities draped in the café he visited on his morning coffee run – how anything managed to make its way through the hidden labyrinths to the sacred depths of the hallowed Arts basement was anyone’s guess. No doubt there were more littering the upper levels of the Literature department as well.
But it did its job, at the very least – it pulled focus, enticing the grad students suffering through the mid semester slog of research to take a break and join the holiday festivities. It was exactly why Modesty had done up his face with a flourish of glittery makeup and shoved him out the door before taking off to her own undergraduate party with friends from her OChem class.
Friends.
Apparently he needed those.
Dress code: Recognizable historic / literary figures!
None of those awful stereotypes! No appropriation allowed!
Be creative, not boring!
The encouragement had been tacked on underneath the poster, pinned to the door of the large house across from the library on campus – a mindful afterthought that hadn’t managed to make its way to the other posters. The vivid exclamation points made his heart shudder in his chest, turning the blood in his veins to ice as his palms began to sweat.
Go as Cleopatra, snag yourself a king, Chastity suggested. She had forced him into an awful thing: a white jumpsuit made to imitate layers of linen – a “modern take” on the Prince Of Egypt adaption the Theater department had developed into an experimental straight play. He hadn’t been able to see it, but the outfits Chastity had worked on were nothing short of amazing. How she snuck one back from the mysterious void of the storage rooms, he would rather not know.
[“I made them. It’s only fair.”]
Modesty had straightened his hair, setting a golden circlet in the shape of a snake upon his brow and settling half a dozen wiry gold bracelets across his arms and wrists. She had even gone the extra mile to paint his eyes – deep, shadowy kohl and bright, vibrant blue. He was pretty sure the design was based on Elizabeth Taylor, not actual hieroglyphics. Someone was bound to tell him off – if not for the improper design, then at the very least for the fact that he was some pale pasty white kid decked out in ridiculously vague allusions to ancient Egyptian attire.
It was a nightmare, and he hadn’t even stepped through the doors yet.
But it was too late. A loud and rambunctious group of students rambled up, hands blindly reaching for the door as they raucously giggled at each other. Shrinking away, he couldn’t avoid being jumbled up into the widespread wall of costumed bodies, tossed out into the fray of the party inside. The music was blaring, a cacophony of stilted techno thumping against the walls as a woman droned in a shouted monotone. It was dark, the only lights coming from glow-in-the-dark stickers flung across the sparse bits of furniture and glow-in-the-dark paint splattered across the walls, dim purple UV lights strung up against the crown molding of the ceiling seams. It was tacky and disorienting. Trying not to stumble into some sanctimonious argument of Dracula vs. Lestat and the merits of the Cullen family, he quickly stepped into the next room.
This room was a bit brighter, though just as awkwardly decorated. Several table lamps were placed strategically in the corners and beside cheap beige chenille couches, covered in gauzy red scarves that threw the room into a bloody shade of red. Speakers were hidden beneath the tables, droning out strange atmospheric noises of wallowing and wails, reedy whistling of a nonexistent wind eerily pressing around the room. The Poe atmosphere was effective, but it had to be a fire hazard of sorts – though none of the occupants seemed to care. There was a heavy scent of smoky incense, curling wisps creeping against the darkened corners. He attempted to hide within such an alcove, tentatively sidestepping toward one such area to get a better view of the room, when a hand shot out to grab his wrist.
“Are you Cleopatra?” He spun around, coming face to face with a sturdy young woman assessing him curiously. Her short hair was done in a thick braid that barely reached her shoulders, and a plastic bow was slung unevenly across her back, the string pressing against her chest.
“Yes?” he answered warily. This was it – he was going to get yelled at, he was going to get kicked out, he was going to get –
“Great! We’ve been looking for a Cleopatra. I’m Tina – History department.” She grabbed his hand without warning, dragging him toward a corner by a tall bookshelf. “You?”
“Credence,” he said faintly, wondering why she of all people would need a Cleopatra. “Literature.”
“Even better! That’s his department too!” Before he could ask for clarification he was being welcomed into a small circle of loitering students huddled together over a book. Of course.
“It’s Minimalism. Its short, its ordinary, its mundane. The man is on an escalator for the entirety of the story,” the shorter man groused, crossing his arms over his chest with a huff.
“Its Maximalist! It’s a long rambling piece of nonsense full of digressive dribble!” a chubbier man exclaimed, waving his hands about enthusiastically. The first rolled his eyes.
“You aren’t even studying modern literature – “
“Post modern literature, Percy!” an energetic redhead crowed, easily slinging an arm over his shoulders. “And anyway, who cares? Where’s the fun in being stuck on an elevator? Now being stuck in Croatia – “
“Teeny!” A blonde woman shoved her way between the two, pretending she hadn’t interrupted such an important discussion as she pulled the strange woman that had kidnapped him to the other side of the circle. “Oh! You found one!”
Credence glanced at them nervously.
“Hello!” another redhead piped up. “That’s a wonderful outfit – a male Cleopatra, brilliant idea!”
“Thank you?”
“Perfect for our Marc Antony!” They pointed to The Minimalist, dressed in a deep brown leather chest plate – supple and buttery, shining smoothly as it hugged his form in all the right places. Gold paint swirled in intricate patterns threading between the golden rivets piercing the pieces together, matching the red wrist guards clasped on his arms and the thick red pteruges strips layered against his thighs, strands of golden fringe flickering as he moved. He wasn’t a history major, so he couldn’t judge the accuracy, but it was an impressive outfit that lovingly emphasizes the wonderfully sculpted ripples of muscle outlining his body.
“Percival Graves,” The Minimalist introduced himself, offering a hand.
“Credence Barebone,” he replied, allowing his hand to be taken into a gentle but firm handshake.
“This is Tina, Newt, and Theseus as our local Katniss, Peeta, and Gale,” the blonde woman continued. “My name is Queenie, and this is Jacob – “
“Hephaestus and Aphrodite,” the cheerful man cut in adoringly, grinning up at her like a lovestruck fool.
“Nice to meet you.”
“So what are you studying?” Newt asked curiously.
“Reformation literature.” Credence shifted, unsure of their reaction.
“Like – religious stuff? All that Milton and Pilgrim’s Progress?” Theseus prompted.
“I – well, technically.” Credence shrugged. “I study Reformation comedies. Like – the Country Wife. It’s a – little more – controversial.”
“Is that code for raunchy and promiscuous?” Theseus teased, waggling his eyebrows and laughing loudly as Jacob snorted. His brother – at least, Credence presumed they were related, given their matching appearance – elbowed him sharply in the ribs.
“Play nice,” Tina reprimanded with a frown, before turning her attention back to him. “My sister and I study modern history. I study counter cultural movements in America during the 1970s and 1980s, and my sister studies the impact of ethnic studies in education.”
“They’re with us!” Newt clarified. “I study the effects of nature on city development, and my brother here is studying the Balkan Wars.”
“I tried to convince Percy to join me, but he stuck with his boring post modern literature,” Theseus lamented.
“Modern literature,” Percival corrected. Theseus waved him off.
“What’s your opinion on it?”
“I – “ Credence flustered, unsure how to answer such a vague question correctly without disappointing any of them.
“Ignore him. He isn’t worth it,” Percival insisted, slipping his hand against Credence’s elbow. “Why don’t we go grab a bite to eat – let him gather his manners?”
Percival threw a reprimanding glare at the man, who cackled in response. Credence could feel the heat of Percival’s hand drifting to press against his lower back, carefully maneuvering him toward what he could only presume was a kitchen. It was comforting, if a bit embarrassing. He felt a shiver trailing down his spine.
The kitchen itself was a travesty that also made him shudder – fluffy white clouds of fake spider webbing cascading across the dining table in billowing curtains, plastic spiders dangling precariously in squished upon droves. Punch bowls and jello molds upon the table held all sorts of mismatched creepy crawlers – worms, octopus’, skeletons. Chain link centipedes were plastered to the cupboards, preschool levels of artwork sloppily thrown together. Cheap junk food haphazardly thrown into grotesque displays were crammed to cover every inch of available counter space. The Art department would have a field day with such an eyesore.
At least it smelled clean – the sharp scent of fake pine and a lingering undertone of bleach creeping through the atmosphere.
“What would you like – pretzels and chips?” Percival asked dryly, raising an eyebrow at the sad excuse for food as he peered over the offerings. He leaned over a gelatin mold, wrinkling his nose in disgust. “You think they would get a little creative with the goods.”
“Picquery set up the good stuff in the upstairs office room,” someone called out behind them. They turned to see a young man in a bright blue sweater and dull orange pants grimacing as he tried to pluck a lego Cthulhu from his scoop of jello. “Abecedarians!”
“Think you should have gone with Captain Haddock if you’re using such language, Abernathy,” Percival tutted, twining his fingers with Credence’s and leading him out of the room. “Of course Sera set up her own area – come on then, she knows what she’s doing, most of the time.”
They weaved in and out of the crowd, clambering up the stairs to the second floor. There were no Halloween decorations, though there was quite a bit of commotion coming from the last room. They quickly made their way in.
Credence was pleasantly surprised to find far more tasteful decorations and treats displayed. Carved pumpkins sat grinning on either end of the lace covered table, smaller painted ones lining the tops of bookshelves. Fairy lights shaped like bats hung in loops along the walls, while a colony of paper ones spread in flight across the ceiling Fake candles were placed between books on shelves and cascaded from corners, illuminating white skulls and gray gargoyles peeking out of the shadows. The corner seams were filled with thin, knotty sticks and black vines, black roses artfully tacked onto them. Even the food was themed – a chocolate cake set like a graveyard with marshmellow skeletons, hot dogs wrapped in crisped biscuits like mummies, chocolate cookies slathered in icing with finely cut strawberries and blueberries set to look like eyes. There were so many twisted and grotesque foods Credence could hardly keep track.
“Percival, how nice of you to show up.” A tall woman slid up next to them, draped in deep red and white folds of a dress, a copper sword strapped to her back. He hair was wrapped in a shimmering metallic scarf to match. She stood proud and regal, scrutinizing Credence with a keen eye.
“Abernathy was singing your praises downstairs,” Percival said with nonchalance, pulling Credence to his side. He slung an arm around his shoulders – made slightly problematic, given the height difference neither had noticed. “Your department has outdone itself yet again.”
“Flattery will get you nowhere, Graves. Who’s your lovely Cleopatra?”
“Credence Barebone, English department – Reformation period. Who are you supposed to be tonight?”
“Oya, Yoruba goddess of storms. Does Credence Barebone know how to answer for himself?” she shot back, eyeing Percival with disdain. Credence settled himself, ducking his head in a way that gave an appearance of submission, but tilting it in a way that could also imply a challenge. He had plenty of practice in meek deference, but refused to waver under some stranger’s judgment.
“What do you study?” he asked – an innocent enough question, on the surface. She lifted her head, catching his game, a faint smile gracing her face as she turned her attention back to him.
“Remixed classical art. My current thesis is on the impact of Kehinde Wiley and Harmonia Rosales have on the interpretation of traditional pieces in a modern context of racial perspective. Have you heard of them?”
“Ah – no,” Credence admitted, shifting uncomfortably. She flashed her teeth, a wide smile too sharp and dangerous to be friendly. Like lightning – beautiful, but able to shred a man to pieces.
“Shame.” She turned back to Percival. “Do try the werewolf brains – the paper mache was quite an effort.”
Credence kept his head down as he watched her leave, a swirling hurricane of wild force that commanded the room. A trio of girls in the doorway parted for her like the Red Sea, giggling in awe as she strode past. A friend of Percival’s and a force to be reckoned with, and he had just blundered the whole first impression away.
“Never mind her,” his Antony said, nonchalant as he snagged a plate from the edge of the table. “We were going to open up a law firm together, once upon a time. She’s still a bit bitter we didn’t pass our LSAT.”
“We?”
“Theseus too. And Tina.” He picked at the food, taking small scoop of gelatinous brain, red food coloring dripping from the spoon. “Speaking of Theseus and Tina, what should we bring back to them?”
Credence tilted his head, nitpicking at the edge of his own plate.
“The – um – spider crackers?”
“No, come on – pick something you actually want. And please don’t say the caprese eyeballs.”
Credence studied the array on spread before them, a feast of holiday goods for the taking. His gaze settled upon a collection of cookies, dark chocolate brownies cut into circles, a dollop of sprinkle covered crème upon it, a coned chocolate kiss settled gently on top.
“The witch hats.” Percival shot him a crooked grin, wryly amused.
“A good choice.” Credence watched as Percival piled food upon the plate, bits and pieces of everything stacked high. Rather than following suit, he quietly left his plate on the corner. “Ready to head back down?”
“I need to find a bathroom.” They started back out the door, Credence trailing behind. He watched others pass by, laughing and nudging each other as they walked up and down the stairwell.
“Bathroom should be on your left.” He was pointed down a long side hallway, where several people lingered. “Come find us again when you’re done.”
The line was taking forever. He shuffled from foot to foot, beginning to grow impatient as he waited. Perhaps it would have been better to have simply gone back to the corner with his new found friends. Could they be considered friends yet? At the rate it took to get into the bathroom, perhaps they would think he had ditched them. It would have been better if only he had stayed –
A hand fell upon his shoulder, squeezing tightly.
“Well aren’t you a cute little thing.” Credence turned around, shrinking away. Before him stood a tall man with pale hair and paler eyes, decked in a toga and crowned with laurel. A Caesar – what were the odds of that?
“My apologies, where are my manners. Gellert Grindelwald – assistant professor for the modern literature department.” The man took Credence’s hand, bowing as he placed a kiss upon his knuckles. Old fashioned and uncomfortable, to say the least. “And to whom do I owe the pleasure of such a beautiful Cleopatra?”
He squirmed away, twisting out of Gellert’s grip.
“Credence,” he answered reluctantly, not wanting to be impolite. Yet his hand continued to roam, tracing across his shoulder and down his back.
“Credence. A lovely name for a lovely face. What’s a beautiful thing like you doing at a party like this, hm? Who did you come with?”
“No one.” He could feel the bottom of his stomach drop at the honest admission. The hand clawed at his belt, eager and excited.
“Oh? Perhaps you’d like some company then?”
“I’d rather not,” Credence admitted, still trying to move away. Gellert just moved closer, crowding into his space.
“A pity. Does that mean you have company here?”
“Yes, actually.”
“I can promise you I am much more entertaining than anyone else you’d meet here.”
Credence fidgeted, unsure what to do. Gellert continued to croon, attempting to convince him to leave. Several moments later, with panic flooding his veins and pulsing beneath his skin, itching to get away, he caught the eyes of his knight – his gladiator, his Antony. Gellert turned to track his line of sight, displeased at such a distraction. His face contorted with fury and disgust when he realized who was headed their way. With a sneer, he grasped the collar of Credence’s outfit, the strain on the outfit almost enough to tear it apart.
“I could ruin him,” Gellert hissed harshly into his ear. “I could ruin all of you. Now play along like a good little boy.”
The two wandered over, Percival standing tall and menacing and in need of a dramatic flair of a cape, while Theseus brooded behind with a sharp glare.
“Credence. We were wondering where you’d had gotten off to,” Percival started, leveling a cold tone as he stared unblinkingly at Gellert.
“Didn’t realize you got stuck with this asshole,” Theseus started, crossing his arms over his chest.
“He isn’t – that bad,” Credence attempted.
“He’s a fucking asshole who gets off on torture porn,” Percival growled, glaring furiously at Gellert.
“Now Percy darling, just because I didn’t invite you back to my little dungeon last Christmas – “ Gellert drawled, voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Fuck off, you prick,” Theseus interrupted loudly, shoving Percival to the side. “Leave the kid alone.”
Credence felt Gellert’s fingers dig into his back, nails scratching through the fabric. The hand clawed at his skin tightly – painfully. Credence stood as still as he possibly could, thinking of the cold marble statues outside the library, tall and unfeeling.
“He’s hardly a child,” Gellert pointed out. “What do you think, Credence – would you rather be off with these foolhardy Neanderthals, or continue our lovely conversation, hm?”
His body was frozen, heavy like lead, unable to move. He stared unblinking at the floor, wishing to be anywhere else. A beat of silence, and Theseus huffed in annoyance, nudging Percival as he turned and left. Percival frowned, but followed after, figuring it to be a lost cause. He glanced back once more, dark eyes piercing through the dim light, but Credence held his head down. Perhaps if he stayed quiet, Gellert would get bored –
“See, what did I tell you?” Gellert trailed his hand down, soft and gentle as it caressed the thin fabric of his outfit. Gellert’s face drifted closer, voice dropping several octaves into a whisper. “Now, where were we? I do believe you were about to tell me of this young Margery – “
His body blocked the hallway, and Credence shrunk back, plastering himself against the wall. Another hand found its way to his waist, a hand settling against it and sweeping downward.
In a fit of panic, Credence lashed out. His mind blanked, nerves firing too fast to keep up. Within seconds, he had shoved Gellert into the wall, pinning him there with a hand wrapped around the man’s neck. He felt wild with the adrenaline rushing through his veins as an overwhelming tempest of fear and rage tore through his bloodstream. His hand twitched and tightened against the pale column of Gellert’s throat.
“Come now, Credence,” Gellert rasped, both hands wrapping around Credence’s wrist. “Control yourself.”
“I don’t think I want to,” Credence growled, pushing harder against him. He could still feel the creeping tremors twisting against his skin, an unsettling film of disgust plastered against his body, seeping beneath his costume and into his bones.
“Mr. Barebone.” His head snapped to the side, locking eyes with none other than Seraphina Picquery herself. Her face was stone still as she took in the scene, mouth a firm line. “Perhaps it’s time you take your leave.”
Anger burned through him, a fierce spark of vengefulness blazing into a firestorm against his ribs. In a burst of blinding fury, he slammed Gellert’s head back into the wall, releasing him as he crumpled to the ground, clawing at his throat as he gasped for breath. Credence shuddered, face twisting as he snarled before shoving past Seraphina, a dark cloud bolting for the door. She watched him go, then turned her attention back to Gellert. The man smirked, chuckling under his breath.
“He’s a miracle, isn’t he?”
“Get out before I call the cops on you,” she sneered, rounding her shoulders back as she turned to the main room. “Everyone out! This party is over.”
Credence made his way to the library, the cold air biting through the whirlwind of his emotions and leaving him feeling like a naked, helpless child. Horror slithered across his skin, twined in the breeze that slid through the thin white linen hanging off of him. He stumbled into the bushes, heaving as he dropped to his knees. He blindly fumbled for his phone, dragging his body up against the brick wall of the library. His shoulder pressed against the rough stone, part of his outfit snagging against it.
Hey Cree. Chastity picked me up and took me to some haunted house they’re doing. We’re staying with Eve and the crew tonight. Hope you had fun!
He leaned heavily against the wall, swallowing hard. If he went home, he would be alone – the very last thing he wanted to be. But it wasn’t like he had anywhere else to go. He didn’t have friends, didn’t have pets, didn’t have anyone waiting for him to keep the vivid memory of hands creeping up his thigh and words whispered in his ear as the world closed in on him in the darkness –
“Credence?”
His head snapped up, eyes widening as he spotted none other than Percival, stopped on the walkway before him. He craned his head and saw the others making their way across the square on the other side of the street, laughing obnoxiously as Tina and Queenie burst into song. It looked as though they had taken their leave as well – the party dying down as the clock struck midnight, as it were. Which meant that Gellert –
Another wave of nausea had him doubling over, though his body seemed to be done with even attempting to dry heave. A bout of dizziness struck him, his hands gone clammy, body shaking apart. The next thing he knew was a distorted shuffling as a pair of sandals made their way into his view.
“Credence, are you alright?” A hand made its way toward his shoulder, and he flinched.
“Alright, it’s okay,” Percival assured, taking a step back. “Take your time. Here, try to match your breathing with my counting, alright?”
His mind was whirling far too fast, skipping over the numbers being listed as he tried to think of what to do. One, Percival was here, trying to calm him down, three, but why, he had left Percival, five, had gone off with Gellert, surely Percival hated him, eight, thought less of him, ten, wanted nothing to do with him, eleven, but maybe he could redeem himself, twelve, that’s why Percival was here for him, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen…
Slowly, Credence managed to come back to himself. Percival watched with a careful eye as the young man brought himself back from hyperventilating, steadily regaining his awareness. After a few more moments, once Percival had calmly made his way to thirty, Credence straightened himself, though he still refused to look up.
“Thanks,” he whispered, voice rough from – whatever had happened.
“Do you want to tell me what that was about?” Percival prompted, not bothering to skirt around the issue. He was worried, of course, and wanted to know – so he wasn’t going to ignore it. Better to be blunt. But if Credence didn’t want to talk, he wouldn’t push.
“It was – “ Credence glanced up from behind his fringe of hair, wary like a caged animal.
“You don’t have to say anything,” Percival assured with a shrug. There was a beat of silence as Credence assessed the situation.
“Gellert tried to – do things.” Percival frowned, gritting his teeth as he surveyed the area in hopes to find the man walking by. What he wouldn’t do to punch that smug bastards face in –
“It’s my fault. I – I should have listened to you.”
Percival placed his hand upon his back, a solid weight and comforting warmth that guided him back to the walkway.
“Do you live with anyone?” he asked. He bit his lip, shaking his head. “I’m going to give you some options, alright? Would you like me to walk you home and stay with you, or would you like to come to my place?”
“My sisters – if they – I don’t know how they would react to someone being there,” he managed to say. Percival nodded understandingly.
“Would you like to stay with me tonight?”
“But I – “
“It’s not a problem, that’s why I’m offering,” he cut in calmly. He thought of his options, before finally caving in with a nod. “Let me call a cab then.”
The ride was a blur of lamplights flashing against his eyelids and the soothing hum of the taxi sailing down empty streets. Percival kept his distance, but let his hand rest between them, palm opened upward if Credence so chose to take it. So far, he was more content to huddle against the cool plastic of the door, leaning his head against the window pane.
Percival’s face was washed with a pale white light, brightened like a spotlight as he gazed down at his phone with furrowed brow. His fingers struck the screen in quick succession, pounding out rhetoric toward Seraphina, skipping words like stones on a lake of ice in an attempt to crack through her tight-lipped wall of excuses to figure out what truly happened. His face twisted in fury, and he finally flung the phone to the floor, unable to contain his ire.
The noise made Credence jump, head turning to see what had happened.
“It’s nothing.” Percival crossed his arms, straightening his back as he leaned against the seat. He looked almost regal – Credence could almost picture it, shifting the world away and painting in the crushed velvet and glittering gold of a palanquin, enshrining Percival in a mystic abyss of light curtains, sun shining through to offer but the glimpse of his strong silhouette peering through.
“You’re a very good Marc Antony,” he said, tilting his head to the side. The picture changed, warping in on itself, swirling into an arena. A sword as firm as his stance, solid and steady, face set in determination. Shoulders down and back, ready for whatever the world would throw at him. A soldier, a gladiator, a knight as it were – brave and steadfast in heart and mind.
[“You are a child unworthy of the grace of the Lord.”]
“Credence?” Percival’s hand came into view, gently brushing against his own in the space between them. “You’re shaking.”
“I – “ There was a moment, standing on the brink of something overwhelming, the edge of a cliff into the unknown. Terror pressed against his heart, squeezing tightly and shrinking his ribs, wrapping around his lungs so he could hardly breathe.
They slid as the cab turned a corner sharply. The moment collapsed, tension exiting is a rush.
It was over. Credence turned back to the window, watching the streetlights pass them by.
“It’s nothing.”
The corners of Percival’s mouth dragged downward, but he made no move to speak into the silence. Instead, he simply pressed his fingers into the spaces between Credence’s, filling the gaps and holding tightly. Credence bit his lip, but let himself be held. It was – nice. Too nice, perhaps. But – nice. Percival’s hands were nothing special – just as warm as his own, just as soft in the hidden places, just as rough in the calloused pads and knuckles. They were smaller, but wider – complimentary to his own, in a way.
They stayed like that, in comforting quiet, to the point where Credence began to lull off, nodding against the window as his eyes fluttered shut. But eventually, their journey came to an end. Just as he was about to dive into sleep, the car pulled to a stop.
“We’re here,” Percival muttered, clutching his hand before letting go to get out. Reluctantly, Credence did the same, managing to maneuver himself out of the car to sidle over to Percival’s side. Percival took his arm gently, carefully guiding him up the driveway and into the house. It was a nice home, to be sure – the typical American dream of a white picket fence and a small white porch.
Credence didn’t pay much attention, instead letting his mind drift.
“Are you hungry?” He shrugged, uncaring. “Alright. Well, here – sit down. I’ll grab you a blanket.”
Percival disappeared into the depths of the other rooms, leaving Credence standing awkwardly in front of a pristine leather couch. It looked far too expensive to even glance at, never mind touch and rest upon. Hesitantly, Credence ran a finger along the sewn seam of the side. It was smooth as silk, dipping beneath his fingertip – gaudy and ostentatious as a black leather couch was, it was also quite beautiful.
“It won’t bite, you know.” Percival stepped toward him, sandals shuffling against the wood floors. He carried a large pillow in his arms, a thick blanket tucked beneath it. “You can sit, it’s fine.”
Credence obediently did as told, sliding onto the seat as Percival took his place beside him.
“Do you want to talk, or just sleep?” As much as Credence wished to stay up, filling the space between them with poetry, waxing lyric on language and literature, delving into the depths of their respective fields – he was exhausted after the events he suffered through, and could feel sleep pulling at his eyes, tugging at his mind, dragging him away.
“Sleep, I think.”
“Lay down then.”
Percival gazed at Credence’s face, watching as the moonlight pouring through the curtains graced his pale face. The young man was quite beautiful, bathed in silver, curled up under soft black blankets.
He would put Cleopatra herself to shame.
Someday…
Okay first off apologies; I took this prompt while I was teaching abroad this summer, and when I got back I started grad school and realized I’d need more than one job to pay for it, so I have been absolutely swamped with work. I didn’t finish everything I wanted with this – but I wanted to post something out here, just to get it out here, so that the prompt was filled before Thanksgiving season. I’m so sorry I’m late with it.
Anyway! Gosh this prompt hit on all my academic enjoyments so I probably went way overboard on that instead of, you know, focusing on the Anthony / Cleopatra / Caesar bit in a more direct way. Like, overall I kind of followed the general plotline of how Plutarch wrote that mess of a threesome, with a hefty dose of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy take thrown in – Cleopatra gets all hung up on Anthony, tries to appease Caesar so Caesar stops going after Anthony, Anthony thinks she doesn’t love him, Cleopatra realizes mistakes were made. And then I tried to make the ending a bit happier, where they come back together and Caesar kind of just disappears. Probably too much influence and reference to cram into what I tried to keep as a light and abstract outline, so it probably ended up seeming more like it was just “woo Halloween costumes and some sad pathetic plot”, so. Apologies.
I also got really into the whole academia setting and spent way too much time dreaming up headcanons for that [wherein Seraphina, Percival, Tina, and Theseus were all Law focused undergrads who ended up failing their LSATs, so they went into grad school research with things they enjoyed most from their undergrad work, hoping to find work through that. Queenie and Newt kind of just followed their siblings along, though they’re the ones who got into grad school because they’re actually paid for their research, and then they met Jacob, who’s been doing research studies for far too many years, and foreign exchange student Gellert, who’s just all sorts of red flag levels of creepy. Credence took up grad school in hopes of getting funding to publish a textbook on Reformation literature so he can support his two sisters in their undergrad schooling, though Modesty will likely be the big breadwinner out of all of them since she’s the one going into Med school, but that’s also pretty expensive, so].
Anyway. It was my first attempt at any sort of holiday prompt type thing [the only other time I filled out a prompt was as an Anon on some Kink Meme way back in the LJ days; either way, I’m not much in on this practice]. Hopefully it wasn’t too terrible and did something for you. Woo.

Baz’s Speech
“Mages, witnesses, Coven. My name is Tyrannus Basilton Grimm-Pitch and I am here as a primary witness to the proceedings the day of the battle in which the Mage died. I have a story to tell that is going to take quite a while and I’m hoping you will lend me your ears and refrain from reacting before I have finished the story.
Thank you.
Now, one of my favourite playwrights, William Shakespeare, once wrote: ‘The evil men do lives after them. The good is oft interred with their bones.’
‘So let it be with Caesar.’, he let Marc Antony speak at Caesar’s funeral.
So let it be with the Mage.
It’s actually a bit ironic to quote a man defending a tyrant, while I am here to do the exact opposite. However, while the Romans were aware of Caesars many ‘grievous faults’, the Mage’s have never been known. However, you cannot make a well-informed decision on Simon Snow and Penelope Bunce’s role in his death without knowing them.
Which is why I am here to tell you the truth about the Mage. The truth about the battle, the truth about the past seven years and the truth about way before that.”

The Aftermath
Penelope
Baz only stayed with us for one night. I don’t think he even planned to stay in the first place, but Simon wouldn’t leave him behind. Even though I still didn’t trust him, I have to say I also wasn’t too keen on having him be on his own after showing, in various ways, how little regard he has for his own life.
Mom wasn’t exactly happy to have a Pitch, or Simon, really, staying in our house, but she dealt with it fine. She drove us home (I realise that arriving to a magickal war with a car sounds pretty anti-climactic, but in the aftermath, it has proven to be very convenient), but I don’t think any of us stayed awake to witness the journey. Simon had fallen asleep in my arms quickly after Baz had let the flames die out. Once Baz and I had carried him to the car (Actually, Baz took him in his arms bridal style, but I couldn’t bring myself to completely let go of Simon, so I held onto his hand the whole way), the both of us passed out not minutes later.
I do remember asking one question, hushed, so that my mother wouldn’t hear:
“Have you ever bitten a person?”
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Baz look so disgusted and mostly hurt. There was so much pain and guilt in his expression, that I believed him when he shook his head. He would never bite another human or mage. I guess that was enough for me.
Once we got home, Mum tried stuffing us with food, but even Simon wouldn’t eat. Baz went out ‘for a walk’, but I couldn’t even be bothered by the whole bloodsucking thing anymore. When he returned, we all sat silently around the table, staring into nothing. Simon just kept nodding off and crying in silence until Mum shooed us to bed. Baz made to find a place on the couch, but Simon reached his hand out to Baz and so he silently followed us upstairs to my room.
I still didn’t trust Baz one bit, -I’m not sure if I ever really will-, but if this was what Simon wanted, then I would go along with it.
The three of us fell asleep the second we hit the sheets, not even having bothered to change our clothes.
When I woke up the next morning Simon was still asleep next to me, and Baz was gone.

Baz’s Speech
“You see, Simon Snow has been a mystery to all of us. I’ve spent seven and a half years living in the same room and even I had never uncovered the great enigma that he is.
We have always been wondering so many things about him. Is he an actual mage? For we all know that mages do not leave their children behind. Where did he come from? Is he really the Chosen One? Even if he is the Chosen One, will he be able to control his magic and save us?
During the battle, a few weeks ago, Simon Snow has displayed one of the most miraculous uses of power. He shared it. He pushed it inside the Humdrum until it disappeared. We haven’t had any attacks or new holes ever since. He hasn’t had magic ever since.”

The Aftermath
Simon Snow
I kept a new list in my head called ‘Things I Might Never See Again’: 1. My Magic 2. The Mage 3. Watford 4. The Humdrum 5. Baz
Even though there were numbers, the order did not really matter. Some things I was sad about; some things I was happy about. Most things I didn’t even know anymore of how I felt about them.
Me and Penny were placed under house arrest by the Coven. We would get trials to decide on whether we’re murderers or not. Even I don’t know, really.
Penny got the opportunity to sit out her house arrest at Watford, so that she could finish her final year. At first, she refused to go. She didn’t want to leave me and I was grateful for that. However, merely three weeks after the battle, I already saw the tension eating at her. She needed the distraction and I figured it might be good to not have as much magic around, so I told her to go.
We got into a fight over it that lasted two days. Eventually, I won, and she went.

Baz’s Speech
“After the battle, I invested all my spare time in figuring out what had happened. I went to seek out all the questions we have always had about Simon Snow and the Insidious Humdrum, and all the questions I’ve always had about the Mage. It has been a shame to learn what I have learned about this man.
I know that there are a few people in this room that I would like to shield from this truth. But it needs to be out there.
I’m sorry.
After I returned to school I longed to go back to my mother’s old office. After she died and the Mage took over, I had never been allowed to go there, but it was the place I grew up. This was the place where I played and read books while my mother worked. The place where she would teach me my first Latin words and let me practice my first spells. This place had been my home before she died during the Watford Attack.
While I was reliving all my memories there, and, admittedly, snooping around a bit, I found this bright red leather booklet. I have it here with me and I’ll let you read through it after I finish speaking if you’d like to.
For now, I’ll just give you a quick summary of everything that I discovered through this booklet.
Because this has been the Mage’s diary for the past twenty years.”

The Aftermath
Baz
When I returned to Watford this time, there was no Sesame Open-ing the door. I’d always dreamed of making a dramatic entrance like that, but now I didn’t exactly feel like grabbing my chance. Instead, I tried to make myself as small as possible. Of course, however, Niall and Dev noticed my entrance anyway, although they seemed to be the only ones.
In mere seconds, they were in my face, yelling at me for ruining their childhood. I couldn’t even bring myself to react. I just looked back at them, spine straightened, until they stormed off. When I looked up to watch the rest of the dining hall, everyone was staring at me. I had nowhere to go, no one to sit with. It felt like I was in a completely new world with no familiar face. Perhaps this was what it had been like for Simon when he first got here.
My eyes instinctively searched for the quiet, empty tables on the sides rather than the crowded ones that I’d been used to. This was where I met Bunce’s gaze. She was on her own, too, and after a few seconds of silent staring she nodded at me to invite me over.
When I sat opposite her, at first, we remained quiet for a few minutes, picking at our food. I actually started when she finally spoke up:
“Agatha left.”, she said, “I don’t really know why, but she is in California now. Something about her being done with magic after what happened.”
She tried to keep her voice neutral, but I could still hear the same bitterness in her voice as she said the words as the bitterness I felt as I heard them. Wellbelove just left Simon here to rot. I may not have liked her in any way; Simon needed her. She left him.
“I see your friends have deserted you, too.”, she then stated.
“I think it might have been me who deserted them.”
“I guess.”
“Not that you would complain.” She considered me for a moment.
“No, not that I would complain.”
Since then we would always sit together. Usually, it’d be in silence. That first day I asked her how Simon was doing and I learned that his magic was truly gone. I had been thinking that maybe in this scenario, with the Mage dead, but Simon himself still alive, he might have been the big winner after all. Now, it turned out that perhaps he had had the greatest loss in the end, anyway.
After the first trial, it turned out that it wouldn’t be as easy as hoped to get Bunce and Snow proven innocent. There were not a lot of witnesses left when the Mage died. Most of the mages had already fled when the Humdrum showed up, and anyone who had remained, was too far away to really see everything that happened.
Not that they admitted that. Every witness seemed to have their own agenda. Some were from the Mage’s side and grieving. They lost the man who was their ultimate hero and they needed someone to blame. Others were from the Family’s side. Even though they were jubilant about the Mage’s death, they were still seeking for more blood. Especially, if it was the Mage’s Heir’s blood.
Or course, there were people who spoke the truth. This truth, however, usually came down to: “I was too far away to see what happened.”
After the first trial, Bunce and I permanently left our competition on grades behind us. Instead we focussed all our energy on finding out what exactly had happened the day of the battle and everything before that. We read forbidden history books, we scanned every inch of my mother’s old office, we glued together and took apart the story over and over until the plot finally made sense again. Until all the puzzle pieces found their rightful place, with the help of The Mage’s diary, to show us the picture of a gruesome reality.
That is when we started writing the speech.

At the Coven
Simon
It takes Baz another hour to explain tell the Coven everything that is in the diary. And I mean everything.
He doesn’t tell the story in chronological order. Penny told me it’s because it takes away the whole climax of the story. So, he starts with how the Mage has orchestrated the attack of the vampires on the nursery. How it is his fault that Baz’s mother has died. I can tell Baz is still hurt (obviously, why wouldn’t he be) by the furious look on his face. Somehow, he manages to suppress his anger and my heart aches for him.
He continues his story with a summary of the past eight years living with me. All the times that the Mage has taken me away for missions. All the times he said ‘emotionally abusive’ things. All the times he has ‘used me as a weapon’.
Penny has prepared me for all that Baz would say, so I manage to mostly keep myself together during the hearing. Maybe I will never truly feel how awful the Mage used to be, even though I rationally do understand it now. Hearing it will never stop hurting.
Then, Baz continues to tell about what happened at the battle. He tells about how the Mage fought with him and how the Mage kept demanding of me to share my power with him, even though I had no idea what he was talking about. He then tells about the Humdrum showing up, wearing my face, and me sharing my magic with the Humdrum. Pushing all of it into him, until none was left for me.
“How did the Mage know that Simon Snow could share his magic?”
Always Baz with the rhetorical questions.
From here on in he plunges into the whole beginning part of the diary. The part with the endless analyses of the Prophecy. The part where the Mage set up his plan, where he described every little detail of the execution of it. The part where he describes impregnating my mother and performing a ritual on her to make sure that I would be the Chosen One.
“These are the evil things the Mage has done, for which he would not have been remembered. He desired power so much, that he created the one who would bring the World of Mages down. He willingly experimented on Simon Snow and made him not the Chosen One, but the one to bring our destruction. He manipulated and used him for his own gains for almost eight years.
“That day on the battlefield, after Simon Snow sacrificed everything to save our world, he asked for the Mage to stop hurting him. At that moment, it seemed like a call for the Mage to stop hitting and pulling at him at that very moment and I am convinced that that had always been Simon Snow’s intention.
“Maybe we did now know at that moment what evil the Mage has done, but I think the universe did. I think that the universe understood that the only way the Mage could stop hurting Simon Snow was by dying.”
I thought I could hear this all again without breaking, but as Baz speaks, and the eyes of the audience turn to me rather than him, I can feel the tears well up again. He was my father, and the only way he could stop hurting me was by not existing at all.
For the first time during his entire speech, Baz turns to look at me. He looks composed again, but there is this sadness in his eyes that he can no longer hide from me and he knows it. He doesn’t try anymore and as much as I hate that it’s there, I try to hold on to this one piece of him that I get as tightly as I can.
He pauses for a second to fix my eyes and then nods slightly at me before continuing.
“Simon Snow is a good person. Maybe even the best in the World of Mages. I would not say this without reason. This boy has lived solely in care homes for eleven years before finding out that he could use magic. He has been abandoned from the very beginning and has always had every reason to say ‘fuck you’ to the entire world for treating him so awfully.
“Instead, when he found out about our world, the world that abandoned him, and his role in saving this world, he took the entire weight of it on his shoulders. He did every assignment the Mage gave him, he studied harder than anyone at Watford, because even magic itself betrayed him. He put his life on the line countless of times for our ungrateful arses.”
It’s hard to tell whether the offended murmurs in the room are because of the swearing or because of the meaning of his words. Probably both.
“You might say that maybe he somehow found out about all the evil the Mage has done, and that he willingly killed the Mage, but Simon Snow would never willingly kill anyone. I know this, because I am standing here.
“Simon Snow and I have been enemies for almost eight years. When we met, he greeted me with the warmest smile I’d ever seen and I told him off. I have bullied and challenged him for years and years and years for no reason other than that our ‘families’ are enemies. We could have been friends, but, instead, I taunted him at every chance I got. I said and did unspeakable things to him and I regret every single one of them.
“Simon Snow had every reason to kill me. We have always known that it would come to this. To a final battle to the death. When it came, I knew that I was done being this prop in the Old Families and the Mage’s war. I was only willing to take it this far. So, I didn’t resist, I didn’t attack.
“That day on the battle field, Simon Snow could have killed me. He almost did. The spell had already left him, but he pulled it back by sheer force of will. He saved me from himself, because Simon Snow is not a murderer. Simon and I have been enemies for eight years. The Mage has been his father figure for eight years. If Simon Snow could not willingly kill his longest enemy, he could not have willingly killed the first person who seemed to care for him.”
The entire room stays dead silent for a while. Only when Baz takes a step back does the Coven realise that he is done speaking. They all look uncomfortably at each other until finally one of them speaks up.
“Thank you, Mr. Grimm-Pitch.”
Baz only nods in response, his eyes challenging the mage to argue his point. The mage turns to another and another and another Coven member, but all of them seem dumbfounded. One of them has taken the diary of the Mage that Baz has offered them and thumbs through it.
She pauses at some pages in the book, reads a bit, and then continues thumbing through it. The rest of us watches her and the other members of the Coven shift and mumble and panic.
Then, suddenly, the mage’s fingers halt in her reading on a page. She looks up and coughs a bit. Everyone turns to her and the suffocating silence returns to the court room.
“Mr. Grimm-Pitch, you have suggested that Mr. Snow has never been the Chosen One. Is that right?”
“Yes.”
“However, the Prophecy clearly states that there is in fact a Chosen One.”
“That is correct.”
“If I understand correctly from your story, that day on the battle field no one has brought Mr. Snow’s fall, even though the Prophecy clearly states that one will bring his fall.”
“Simon Snow has not fallen on the battle field indeed.”
“The Insidious Humdrum, or that part of Mr. Snow, is already gone. If this story you’re telling is correct, no one has brought his fall. The Prophecy is pretty clear about the role of the Chosen One, therefore your theory can in no way be correct.”
“I understand your confusion, Mrs, but it actually makes a lot of sense.”
“Please explain then, Mr. Pitch.”
“Simon Snow has fallen way before the battle that day even started.”
“Then how do you suggest that happened?”
The entire room is on edge. Penny didn’t discuss this with me and considering the look on her face, she also had not thought of this.
I can only hope that Baz truly has a good response to this question, but somehow I completely trust him to save us. So, when Baz, for only the second time today, turns to look at me, I meet his gaze and nod at him. You got this, I try to tell him. Fight back.
As if he has heard me, I see some of the tension in his shoulders releasing. I see a small smile appearing. At first, I think it is a happy smile, but when I look closer, I see the bitter sadness taking over. This smile is not as much a thank you or an I got you as it is a goodbye.
“The one who has brought the fall of Simon Snow and the Insidious Humdrum…”
He pauses to shift his gaze to look directly into the eyes of the mage.
“… is the one he has fallen in love with.”

The Aftermath
Penelope
It was the first day Baz came back. Breakfast was mostly quiet, but we both had things to say and questions to ask.
I started asking him why he had done what he did for Simon, but I didn’t get further than a few words:
“Baz, why did y-“
“How is Simon?”
I considered the desperate look in his eyes for a second. He looked down at his plate again, avoiding my eyes.
“Sorry, I interrupted you. What did you want to ask?”
“Never mind…”, I paused for a second, thinking. “I think you just answered by question.”
“Excuse me, what?”
“Merlin, this is all starting to make so much sense…”
“Crowley, Bunce, what are you talking about?”
I hear the frustration and fear simmering in his voice and I take a second to go over every thought, every memory, every conversation of the past seven years. It makes so much sense.
“You are in love with him.”
I look him defiantly in the eyes and I see a panicked look flashing by before his gaze hardens.
“I am not in love with Snow.”
I smirk.
“You called him Simon before.”

At the Coven
Baz
We win the trial. Bunce and Snow are free to go and none of us will get any punishment. Well… at least not from the Coven.
Needless to say, I don’t think my father will be accepting me back in the house for quite some time, if ever. I’m still the monster I’ve always been. A monster that never should have even stayed alive if it were up to my mother. I didn’t tell the Coven about that. Or anyone, for that matter. I have to carry that burden alone. I am not sure I will.
Simon lost everything. His magic was the only thing that got him out of the care homes. Watford was the one place he could call home. The Mage may have been his biggest enemy in the end, but he was his father nonetheless. The person he had looked up to and who had shown him a whole new world. Snow had been a monster as well. It may not have been his fault, but it was still his burden to bear. I wonder whether he will.
We survived the battle and we won the trial. We’re still the losers of all this. We survived, but what for.
Yay, that was the third chapter! I hope you enjoyed it :) Please let me know what you thought.
I’ll be posting the next chapter hopefully quicker than I posted this one. I’m sorry I kept you all waiting. Life gets busy sometimes.
Thank you all for reading so far!

How to Give an Erotic Massage: Massage Oils
Why massage oil?
A lot of people think grabbing some hand cream or body lotion would do just fine for a massage, or worse (shudder) doing a “dry” massage. If you want this erotic massage to actually reach the erotic point, you need real massage oil; something that will absorb a bit into the skin, soften it, but also allow you to keep smooth, steady movements with your massage.
You also want your massage oil to be something that you use only for erotic massage. You want to get to the point where you can take a whiff of the oil and have your body ready to rumble. You want to walk into the room the next day, catch the merest leftover scent of the massage oil, and smile at the memory of what you did in that room the night before. You want to put one small drop of that massage oil behind your ear, so that when you and your partner are out on the town, at a party or a business meeting, maybe in a restaurant, he’ll catch the scent as it wafts past him, and drive him insane until he can get you alone. Lubriderm cream is not going to do that for you!
But let’s back up a bit here, take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
A Brief History
Oils and aromatherapy have been around for a long time. Just look in the Bible. Remember when Mary Magdalene anointed Jesus’ feet? Not only was she applying essential oils, but was doing so through massage. Mary knew the power of massage. It’s a way to relax, relieve stress, show interest, and “rev the motor”, so to speak.
Oils have been around a lot longer than Biblical times, though. About 2700 years before the birth of Christ, the Chinese were using herbs and burning oils.
The Egyptians used oils in the mummification process, then eventually applied the same herbs and oils to everyday life. In fact, Cleopatra used the exotic and erotic Jasmine oil to distract Marc Antony during business meetings (Ladies, take note!).
In India, practitioners of ayurveda, a form of medical therapy, employed the use of aromatherapy and massage. Greeks used oils for aromatherapy, cosmetics, and medicine. Romans utilized the oils after baths, and the Aztec had a vast array of herbs and plants. In 980 AD, in the Far East, the art of distilling alcohol led to the development of more modern-day perfumes.
I believe it wouldn’t be too far-reaching to say that nearly every culture at one time or another took advantage of nature’s resources and used oils and massage.
How Do They Work?
Essential oils work in at several ways. First, and probably most obvious, is scent. The nose is an incredible organ. Ever notice how a fleeting aroma wafting across the street can take you back in time 20 years, to when you first encountered that smell? You can recall that instant in time in vivid detail; much more detail, in fact, than a photograph could bring back. Have you ever encountered a scent that reminded you of a particular person? Have you ever found yourself attracted to someone and not known why, only to find out later it was the scent he or she was wearing that aroused your interest? There are good reasons for that. The nose is directly hardwired to the brain.
When a scent is inhaled, the particles of the aroma are picked up by nerve endings at the back of the nose. The signal is then passed up to the brain, specifically to the limbic system.
The limbic system is home of the hypothalamus, which in turn houses the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland, among other things, is responsible for hormone release. See where I’m going with this?
Nose – to – limbic system – to – hypothalamus – to – pituitary gland – to – hormone release
There are different neurochemicals that are triggered by smell and cause mood changes. The first one is familiar to just about everyone- endorphine. Endorphin is the body’s natural high. Endorphines are most commonly associated with pain control. Everyone has heard of the person who is shot and doesn’t know it, or the person who has broken a limb and feels no pain. Thank the great hormone endorphine for that! Endorphines are actually stronger than morphine, which is probably why the word breaks down as “endo”, which means “within”, and “phin”, which means “morphine”; literally the word means “the morphine within.”
But pain control isn’t the only job of endorphines. Elevated levels of this hormone is seen after exercise and sex, as well. It’s associated with feelings of invicibility, satisfaction, calmness, and attunement with the body.
The other neurochemical triggered by smell is serotonin. Serotonin is a calming hormone. It is associated with sleep, mood, locomotion, feeding, and anxiety.
Is it any wonder that aromatherapy is a great way to relax, calm, and entice?
So, now the nose has picked up on the scents of the oil and has triggered a mad rush of hormones through the body. That, you may say, is a temporary state. One could get used to the scent of the oil and it will have less impact, or over the course of an evening the effects of the hormones will dissipate. But there’s more. The oils are also absorbed in the fat cells, and when essential oils are used in massage, whether erotic or not, the medicinal components of the herbs are also availed. Combine that with the effects of the massage itself -stimulation of circulation and heat production, not to mention relaxation of tense muscles – and you have an excellent vehicle through which to completely spoil your partner with luxury.
Introduction to Essential Oils
I personally believe that massage using essential oils is one of the most erotic feelings in life. As I said before, the massage itself, along with the scents, is magical enough, but what I think really makes massage with essential oils so special is the care that is being shown by the masseuse.
When you partner takes the time to select, mix, and then apply oils to your body, he or she is telling you that you are worth the time. Your partner is telling you that you’re worth spoiling, worth pampering, and that he or she thinks you’re beautiful.
Psychologically, essential oils and massage do as much for the soul as the actually physical benefits, which are no small things.
The main focus of this composition is information on essential oils used for massage. Keep in mind that all these oils are used for other medicinal reasons and in other ways than massage. For our purposes, though, I will try to keep the information on massage oils, erotic and otherwise.
At the end of this report you’ll find a small guide to different oils, their basic scents, and their attributes in regards to massage, as well as good base oils to use in your mixture.
A Word of Caution
My favorite base oil is almond oil, but there are a surprisingly large number of people allergic to nuts. DO NOT USE ALMOND OIL WITH ANYONE WHO HAS A NUT ALLERGY! You want to send your partner into throes of passion, not the emergency room with anaphylactic shock.
When choosing the essential oils for your massage oil:
• Pick just a few; you don’t want a mishmash of aromas.
• Make sure the essential oils, as well as the base oil, are not only edible, but tastes good and are not harmful to mucous membrane.
• Be aware of the properties of the essential oils you use. Some may heat up, which can be a lot of fun, but might be a little intense for some people. Some are astringent, some can raise blood pressure, and some just taste horrible.
• This may sound like a “duh” statement, but find out what your partner likes. If your partner absolutely hates mints, then massage oil made with peppermint is not going to put him in the mood for love.
Blends
There are a few things to keep in mind when blending oils. First and foremost is many essential oils have medicinal properties and should be used with caution, especially during pregnancy.
After the list of oils and their attributes at the end of this narrative, there will be a list of oils to avoid during pregnancy, some of which may not be listed in the list of oil attributes.
The second thing to keep in mind is that oils should never be applied directly to the skin, unless you have been instructed to do so by an experienced aromatherapist. Base oil must always be used. You want to use about 5 to 6 drops of essential oil for every 10 mL of base oil you use. That comes out to about 15 or so drops of essential oil per liter of base oil.
Oils should be stored in a dark glass bottle – never plastic. You will usually find oils stored in amber-colored bottles or blue ones. Avoid rubber stoppers for your oil bottles. The oils can eat through the rubber.
And speaking of oils eating through rubber, latex condoms will degrade in the presence of oil. Again, your Jimmy hat will not be of any use if you use oils as a sexual lubricant, which is bound to happen during an erotic massage. There are condoms made from plastics that can withstand the presence of oil, so read labels before you buy! Okay, I’m going to reiterate, since I don’t want anyone blaming me if Junior is born 9 months from now: DO NOT USE LATEX CONDOMS WITH OIL LUBRICANTS, AS THE OIL CAN CAUSE THE CONDOM TO BREAK!
Moving on…..
Store the oils in a cool dry place. If stored correctly, the oils should last a year or so.
After mixing your oils, let your mixture sit for a day or so, or at least a few hours, and then go back and smell it again. You might find that the finished product smells a little different from when you first put it up. You can adjust your mixture accordingly. Play around with the oils, find a mixture that smells good to you and experiment with it. If you added 3 drops of sandalwood and 1 drop of chamomile one time, the next time you might want to try 2 drops of each, instead.
By the way, the combination of sandalwood and chamomile is an excellent relaxing oil mixture.
In general, men tend to enjoy spicy, woody smells, while women are known for favoring floral scents. A blend of both, then, would be an ideal massage oil that would please both partners in a heterosexual relationship. This, however, is a general statement. I’m a woman, and I prefer the spicy aromas over the floral ones, and I know some men who love the scent of some flowers. Regardless, for him/her relationships try a mixture of jasmine and sandalwood (both very erotic oils), or rose and frankincense.
Men like scents such as cinnamon, ginger, clove, nutmeg, and coriander. Women seem to lean towards aromas such as rose, jasmine, nerolis, and ylang-ylang. But, like I said before, this is a generality and the real fun comes from finding what you and your partner enjoy.
My all-time favorite massage oil is a combination of lavender oil, clove oil, cinnamon, peppermint, and rosemary oil, in a base of sweet almond oil. This blend not only smells awesome, but also produces just a touch of heat that can really drive you wild. It also tastes great!
You might want to try these other combinations:
– For relaxation try clary sage, lavender, and lemon. Chamomile is excellent for sleep, so try a mixture of chamomile and sandalwood, or chamomile and lavender to help you relax.
– Ginger and, believe it or not, black pepper, are great for sore, achy muscles.
– For an uplifting massage, try a blend of lemon, mint, and geranium. How about bergamot, peppermint, and lemon? Lavender, orange, and peppermint is a very cooling combination, as well, and gives a nice floral scent.
– For romance there are several mixtures you can try. Bergamot, sandalwood, and jasmine for one. The Kama Sutra recommends jasmine and grapefruit. Ylang-ylang, lavender, grapefruit, lemon, and neroli are also great together. If you’re really ambitious, go for a combination of rosewood, neroli, lavender, thyme, and cinnamon or clove.
– Trouble sleeping? Try lemon, marjoram, and vetiver.
Essential Oils
Please keep in mind that all these oils have many attributes, and this is by no means a complete list of essential oils. I’ve picked these oils for their relaxing, sensual, or refreshing qualities. An asterisk after an entry means that that particular essential oil is not recommended for use during pregnancy.
In general, it is a good idea to always consult with an herbalist, doctor, midwife, aromatherapist, or other healthcare practitioner before using any essential oil medicinally. There will be a more complete list of oils to avoid after this entry.
Essential oils that are underlined are particularly known for their sensual attributes. If you notice, most of the “aphrodisiac” essential oils have euphoric and calming effects. This makes sense, as a calm and content state of mind is essential for a good sensual encounter. Combine these erotic oils with those promoting muscle relaxation, and you have a massage partner that is calm, relaxed, and ready for more action.
– Bergamot – Citrus bergamia – This oil has the aroma of bergamot orange that is slightly floral. A very refreshing scent. It is also known as Oswego tea and bee balm. This oil is good for depression, tension, and stress.
– Bos-de-Rose – Aniba rosaeodora – A sweet, floral, woody scent that relieves stress, headache, and depression.
– Cedarwood* – Cedrus atlantica – You will find this a scent that is dry, woody, and sweet. It soothes and calms. Great for arthritis and stress.
– Chamomile* – Matricana chamomila – This oil has a fruity, herbal essence with a myriad of uses. Not only is it great for your hair, it is also wonderful for insomnia, anxiety, neuralgia, burns, pain of rheumatism, gout, sores, sprains, inflamed skin, strains, stress, and nerves, and gives a sense of peace and calm.
– Cinnamon* – Cinnamonum zelanicum – I’m sure everyone has smelled the comforting aroma of cinnamon in apple pie, but I bet you didn’t know it is a wonderful essential oil for exhaustion, stress, and rheumatism. Cinnamon may be a mucus membrane irritant, as are the other spices, so keep that in mind when making oils intended for erotic massage. You might want to use just a small amount in you blend.
– Citronella* – Cymbopogon nardus – This oil has a lovely citrus odor. I’m sure everyone is familiar with its insect-repellent attributes, but it’s also a great tonic for headache and fatigue.
– Clary Sage* – Salvia sclarea – This oil with a nutty fragrance helps fortify a debilitated nervous system. It is also a euphoric and has sensual properties. Some sources site clary sage as being a uterine stimulant, so this must be kept in mind in the case of pregnancy.
– Clove* – Eugenia caryophyllata – Clove is a wonderful analgesic; just ask anyone who’s used it for a toothache. It also has antiseptic properties and is excellent for arthritis pains, as well as sprains and strains. This oil may cause mucus membranes irritation, so again, be wary. In my own personal use of this essential oil, I’ve not found it to be irritating to mucus membranes, but everyone is different and perceives sensations differently.
– Cypress – Cupressus sempervirens – A woody aroma that helps with mental and emotional resolve, as well as rheumatism and varicose veins.
– Frankincense – Buswellia thurifera – This gift from the magi has a heady, spicy aroma. It encourages feelings of peace and wellbeing, calms, deepens breathing, and eases nerves and tension. I liked to use this oil or the resin itself when my children are fearful of boogey men and monsters. When I burn frankincense, I can feel it in my spine. The aroma evokes feelings of safety, and may even chase away evil spirits!
– Geranium* – Pelargonium graveolens – An essential oil with a floral scent. It’s good for depression and nerves; helps to relax. It also benefits the nervous system and women who suffer from PMS.
– Ginger – Zingiber officinale – Ginger has a spicy aroma that for me calms and soothes. My midwife uses ginger in boiling water during births to soothe the laboring mother. She also uses the ginger water to relax the skin. Ginger improves circulation; it’s great for cold hands and feet, so try it in a tub or footbath. It helps with muscle aches and pains, as well as arthritis.
– Grapefruit – Citrus paradisi – This oil, with an obvious citrus aroma, is used for depression and migraine, and as a tonic aid in drug withdrawal. It is a good choice if you’re looking for a refreshing scent.
– Hops – Humulus lupus – Hops is the ingredient in beer that acts as a sedative. Marijuana, which also causes sedation, is a relative of hops. Hops is an analgesic and helps neuralgia, nervous tension, bruising, and insomnia. It’s also a skin softener.
– Jasmine – Jasminum officinale – This oil has an erotic floral scent. This night-blooming flower eases anxiety and lethargy, while relaxing and calming.
– Juniper* – Juniperus communis – With an earthy, woody scent, juniper clears the emotions and relaxes. It’s also good for cellulitis and rheumatism.
– Lavender – Lavendula augustiform – This oil has a warm floral aroma. It is a relaxant, easing nervous tension, headaches, neuralgia, and muscle aches and pains from rheumatism, and gives a sense of tranquility. It also works wonders on burns, though I do not recommend using the undiluted oil on damaged skin, and before using any oil medicinally, it’s a good idea to check with an aromatherapist, herbalist, midwife, or naturopath.
– Lemon – Citrus limonum – A lemony aroma, of course, that refreshes and cools. It’s great for nerves, varicose veins, and high blood pressure. Anyone who has had a tall glass of ice water with a twist of lemon on a hot summer’s day or while feverish can attest to the cooling, soothing qualities of lemon.
– Lemongrass – Cymbopogon citratus – Citrus. Wonderful for muscle aches, headaches, and stress.
– Lime – Citrus aurantifolia – Another oil with a sweet citrus odor. Great for high blood pressure, rheumatism, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and varicose veins. It revitalizes, too.
– Mandarin – Citrus noblis – An oil with a fruity citrus essence that relieves stress and nervousness, as well as eases insomnia with its tranquilizing effects.
– Marjoram* – Origanum marjorana – This essential oil has a spicy, woody aroma that is helpful with bruises, PMS, anxiety, insomnia, muscle aches, circulation, neuralgia, rheumatism, sprains, and strains.
– Melissa – Melissa officinalis – Also known as lemon balm, it calms nerves and lifts spirits. Its sedative affect helps with depression and insomnia. It’s also good for eczema.
– Myrrh* – Commiphora myrrha – This aroma is woody and earthy, and has wonderful calming affects. It is also used as gargles and mouth rinses for those suffering from gingival problems, but this should be done only under the direction of any herbalist, and the oil never applied directly to the mucus membranes.
– Neroli – Citrus bigaradia – This oil has the essence of blossom of bitter orange. It eases depression, anxiety, and hysteria, as well as nervous tension. It promotes peace and encourages sleep, but is also known for its seductive qualities.
– Nutmeg* – Myristica fragrans – This woody, spicy oil works wonders for arthritis, aching muscles, neuralgia, rheumatism, and poor circulation.
– Orange – Citrus aurantium – Bitter orange, with its citrus aroma, is good for depression, anxiety, stress, dull skin, and muscle spasms.
– Palmarosa – Cymbopogon martini – This refreshing, floral aroma helps with exhaustion, skin infections, and dull skin.
– Patchouli – Pogostemon patchouli – With its musky odor, it lends itself as a sensual essential oil. It is also useful for skin inflammation, fatigue, mature skin, stress, and hair care.
– Peppermint – Mentha piperata – A cooling, refreshing minty aroma is the characteristic of this oil. It is also known for its benefits for inflammation, and migraine, and where it is applied it has an anesthetic affect that increases blood flow. Like the other mints, though, it may cause mucus membrane irritation.
– Rose – Rosa gallica officinalis – A light floral aroma helps to ease tension, depression, and anxiety. It is a “love oil” that is also an excellent tonic for the reproductive organs. Rose also aids in the treatment of eczema and mature skin.
– Rosemary* – Rosmarinus officinalis – This oil has an herbal, woody aroma. It, too, is a “love oil”, but also helps with headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, sprains, nerves, and rheumatism. This is one of the best oils for your hair.
– Rosewood – Aniba Rosaeodora – This floral scent promotes comfort and eases depression. It relaxes sore muscles. It is also known as lemongrass.
– Sandalwood – Santalum album – This wood-scented oil is known as a sexual stimulant. It helps the user to focus on the here and now, enjoying the moment rather than worrying about what could have been; enabling the user to fully enjoy his or her present situation and partner. It is also a sedative that helps with depression and PMS.
– Thyme* – Thymus vulgaris (as well as T. serpyllum and T. pulegioides) – This plant possesses a fresh, herbal aroma. It strengthens nerves, eases exhaustion and rheumatic pains, and soothes muscle aches and arthritis. – Ylang-ylang – Canagna odorata – This oil has an exotic, floral odor that eases stress, anxiety, and high blood pressure. It’s a general tonic that is also well known for its sensual properties.
Base oils
– Sweet Almond – This oil can be used 100%. This is my favorite oil to use as a base. It’s light in texture and color, and has the added benefit of helping with itching, dryness, soreness, and inflammation.
– Apricot Kernel – This oil, too, can be used undiluted. It’s good for sensitive skin and dry skin.
– Avocado – This oil should be used at only 10% (90% should be another oil, such as sweet almond). This base oil is rather heavy and leaves a waxy feel on the skin.
– Avocado Pear – Again, though this oil is good for dry skin, it should be used at 10% and mixed with another base oil.
– Borage Seed – Another 10% oil that should be mixed. It’s good for premature aging, stimulation and regeneration of skin, multiple sclerosis, menopause, heart disease, and eczema.
– Cocoa Butter – This needs to be warmed, as it is solid at room temperature, but it is excellent for dry skin.
– Corn Oil – This oil can be used 100% and is good for all skin types. It’s rather heavy, but also soothing.
– Hazelnut – This oil can be used undiluted and on all skin types. It is also an astringent.
– Jojoba – This base should be diluted to 10%. It’s a wonderful help in psoriasis, acne, and inflamed skin, but can be used on all skin types. It’s also good for the hair.
– Peanut Oil – Edgar Casey sang the wonders of this oil. He recommended it for all types of ailments. Peanut oil can be used undiluted and on all skin types, but be aware that it has a very strong aroma of peanuts and can feel quite heavy on the skin.
– Safflower – This can be used undiluted and for all skin types.
– Sesame Oil – This should be diluted to 10%, but is wonderful on all skin types. It is especially useful for psoriasis, eczema, and arthritis. It also has a strong aroma, though, so smell it before trying it. – Soya Bean – Another oil that can be used undiluted and on all skin types. – Sunflower oil – Again, another oil that can be used undiluted and on all skin types.
– Wheat germ – While good for psoriasis, prematurely aging skin, and eczema, as well as all skin types, it should be used at 10%.
Remember, use only 5 to 6 drops of essential oil per 10 mL of base oil. This is the total amount. You can combine oils, of course, but in total your essential oils should not exceed the 5 to 6 drops mentioned above.
Pregnancy and Essential Oils
Some essential oils may be uterine stimulants or have other effects that are contraindicated in pregnancy. While this list is pretty close to complete, there’s no way I can be sure I got everything down. In any case, when pregnant, it is always good to check with a midwife, herbalist, or aromatherapist before using any particular essential oil. While some oils are not advised during early pregnancy, some may actually be beneficial in the last trimester or during labor.
• Angelica
• Aniseed
• Basil
• Camphor
• Cedarwood
• Chamomile
• Cinnamon
• Citronella
• Clary sage
• Clove
• Cypress
• Fennel
• Geranium
• Hyssop
• Juniper
• Marjoram
• Myrrh
• Nutmeg
• Oregano
• Parsley
• Peppermint
• Rosemary*
• Sage
• Thyme
*Some sources site rosemary as being contraindicated in pregnancy, while others claim there is no reason it can’t be used. All I can say is to research the herb yourself, talk to some herbalists, and make your own decision.
Other Precautions
If allergic to nuts, avoid base oils that contain nuts, such as sweet almond oil, hazelnut oil, and peanut oil. This may seem an obvious thing to do, but there are some people that will assume because the oil is not being ingested, that it is safe. Unless you’ve had an anaphylactic reaction to nuts, you couldn’t possible understand the need to be extremely careful with these oils.
If you suffer from high blood pressure, avoid hyssop, rosemary, sage, and thyme. Licorice is also known to elevate the blood pressure, but it’s not often used as a massage oil!
Diabetics should avoid angelica.
For those of you who enjoy tanning beds or outdoor tanning, you should avoid bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, ginger, lime, orange, and the other citruses. These can make you hypersensitive to ultraviolet waves.
Oils to be avoided in general are:
• Bitter almond
• Boldo leaf
• Calamus
• Deadly nightshade
• Horseradish
• Jaborandi leaf
• Mugwort
• Mustard
• Pennyroyal
• Rue
• Sassafras
• Savin
• Southern wood
• Stinging nettle
• Tansy
• Thuja
• Wintergreen
• Wormwood
• Yellow camphor
Conclusion
In closing, I want to encourage you all to experiment with essential oils and erotic massage. The skin is the largest human organ; take full advantage of it!
As you experiment with more and more combinations, finding the ones that are right for you in each particular circumstance, you will not only find that you are pleasing you partner in much deeper ways, but you are also learning something about yourself. To honestly enjoying giving pleasure to your partner is what will make you a good lover, and a memorable one. When I think about my lover, it’s his hands that come to mind before anything else. Even as I type I can feel his hands on my neck, massaging the stress of computer work away!
Slow down, enjoy your senses, and enjoy each other.
“And in the end, the love you make is equal to the love you take.”

⥼ Chapter Summary ⥽
The danger is far from over. Tired of laying low Nadya and the others go on the offensive. Nadya, Adrian, and Kamilah go to the Musea Sanguis to confront the Trinity about the trial.
[READ IT ON AO3]
Tumblr media
Adrian wants to be the one to take the risk but Kamilah forbids it. And when he goes to do it behind her back anyway she gets to it first.
“I wish you would just trust me sometimes, Kamilah. I know which members of my Clan will keep my secret.”
“It was a greater risk on your part. It’s done — leave it at that.”
The old phone vibrates in her hand. She glances at the first and only message it will ever receive before making quick work of snapping the SIM and tossing the battery and mobile in two different ponds.
“There’s a shred of luck in our favor,” she starts a brisk pace down the park path — doesn’t wait for Adrian and Nadya to catch up, “as they’re still in town.”
“Good — we can grab a taxi to their hotel. I don’t think we have to worry about one driver.”
“They aren’t at their hotel, Adrian. They’re at the Musea.”
Adrian mutters something under his breath Nadya can’t quite catch. But from context whatever it is it’s not a good thing. “So much for luck.”
“I’m inclined to agree. Despite his position in my Clan I’ve never found Jameson to be the most loyal.”
“He’s a good man, Kamilah. Maybe we can convince him that we’re only seeking justice.”
“I… I’m unsure of how he’ll respond.”
“Any chance we won’t run into him?”
“About as much chance as we would in the sunlight.”
The Musea Sanguis is a historian’s heaven and hell. Filled to the brim with artifacts and accounts from every period and civilization collected in one place not only for their study but also for their safekeeping. But unlike every other collection that would boast the same claims the one at the Musea is special in that it holds the mystical ‘truth’ everyone searches for.
Werewolf packs roaming the New World before Columbus ever stepped on her soil. Witches sealing deals with Marc Antony and Cleopatra. Vampire soldiers in every war and on every side. The Musea Sanguis told the tales forgotten and erased in the name of preserving the shadows and their secrets.
A necessary evil.
“So why would the Trinity come here now?”
Kamilah doesn’t answer; fixates on finding something hidden — a panel made to look like the white outer brickwork that slides aside to reveal a keypad.
Adrian shrugs. “Probably nostalgia; since the Ball brought them out of hiding. They’ve contributed to the Musea for centuries.”
“Wait — that doesn’t make sense.”
“The Musea is wherever the collection goes. New York is just its most recent home.”
Musea or not — Nadya had no idea she’d be able to cross ‘Break into a Secret Museum Within the Met’ off her bucket list. She’d have to add it first.
Kamilah punches in the final digit in a sequence and the maintenance door unlocks with a thunk of metal. The part of Nadya that was forced to endure the Heist of Monaco miniseries with Lily for thirteen hours straight knows this is too easy. Waits for something to jump out of the blackness when Kamilah opens the door and ushers them inside.
Or maybe life just isn’t a television minidrama.
The door closes behind them and darkness swallows them whole.
Tumblr media
It’s beautiful, magnificent — ancient too but there are so many words she could use and Nadya quickly gives up trying to find them all because she’d need to go to another part of the gallery for a dictionary.
The temptation to stop and bask in the wonder of strange objects in glass cases is hard to ignore. Then she sees Adrian five steps ahead and rushes to catch up to his and Kamilah’s long strides.
There’ll be time to look at everything later. When everyone is safe.
“I can feel them,” Kamilah hisses; jerks her head towards an archway at the end of a turn, “quickly.”
The arch is rough and worn sandstone — as much an exhibit as anything under a podium or on a shelf. The exhibit’s wallpaper peels away from it; recoils from history it knows it ought not touch. If once there were engravings in the carved sides they’ve since faded with time.
Nadya lets herself indulge — brushes her fingertips along the porous surface as they pass.
“Peculiar, in fact, that as I stand before you and confess my intentions to rid myself of the pest Hydarnes, that a more loyal soldier would attempt to run me through for my wicked tongue. Yet there you stand; immobile.”
“Not immobile — Immortal. I know my place.”
“Ah, but that is the great lie. So called ‘Immortals’ walking among men… yet a blade would fell you as easily as it would a commoner.”
“Then you underestimate me, Augustine.”
“Perhaps I do, Valdemaras… Perhaps I do…”
“Nadya?”
She’s in two places at once. There’s the world in front of her; the stone pressing into her nails and feet rooted to the floor and Adrian and Kamilah turned back towards her with matching looks of confusion and worry.
Then there’s the archway; cut in sharp definition and painted vibrant to match the late King Cyrus’ famed conquests and with a familiar face glaring at her from across the room that both is and isn’t there.
She blinks rapidly — takes the choice away from her mind in where it wants to reside and forces it to focus on the here and now. To Adrian who is stopped before he can advance on her.
He looks down to Kamilah’s hand — confused.
“Let it be.” She doesn’t give him the chance to speak. But the look she gives Nadya is a knowing one. And isn’t that a big relief.
Kamilah releases him, gestures ahead. “They’re in the atrium beyond. Scout to see if Jameson is near. We won’t have long.”
Even when Nadya puts on her best ‘I’m not having strange visions I can’t explain and everything is fine’ face he doesn’t buy it.
“Are you…?”
“I’m okay. I promise.” Squeezing his hand. “Go.”
When he’s three bookshelves away Nadya goes to speak — finds herself silenced by Kamilah’s finger over her lips. They watch Adrian pass three more shelves and round a corner.
“What did you see?”
But it’s already fading — another in a long list of forgotten dreams. “It’s hazy…”
“Try Nadya, please.” And she doesn’t like the insistence in Kamilah’s voice only because it’s heartbreaking and there’s nothing she can do to stop it. “Breathe deep and try.”
She breathes. Breathes again, deep this time. Feels the gritty sand from the arch under her nails.
“It was… it was Valdas — or… his other name.”
“Valdemaras?”
Nadya nods. “Mm. Something about… I think I was him, again. I didn’t see him. Me. My face.”
But putting it into words is like painting without paint; or a brush or a canvas. She can mimic the motions and mouth words soundlessly but nothing is right.
“Come on. Adrian needs us.” She knows Kamilah and knows Kamilah won’t let it go. So she pushes the issue aside by evading the hand that moves her way and practically sprints to join Adrian around the corner. Leaves Kamilah behind only because looking back at her face is too much pain for her to focus on just then.
She comes to an abrupt stop when she turns and collides straight into Adrian’s back.
“Ow!” He doesn’t budge. More throbbing pain for her — hooray.
When the ringing in her ears stops Nadya catches a honey-sweet voice in laughter. It echoes off the domed ceiling and travels around the room like a malevolent breeze.
“There she is. Where Adrian Raines goes one can be sure his human toy follows close behind. But she isn’t all there is, is she? No… I can feel a familiar one close. Kamilah — surely you aren’t so naive as to try hiding. You’re better than that… or maybe you aren’t.”
But Kamilah isn’t hiding. She comes up right behind Nadya and coaxes Adrian forward with a hand at his back.
Isseya’s laughter continues from where she lounges on an old velveteen chaise; one of many such places to sit scattered around the vast and sparsely-filled room.
In fact as Nadya looks around there’s nothing to take up the decorative marble floor at all. The attraction lies instead in a dozen paintings hung on the walls. Each given a wide berth from the other.
Even with her glasses she can’t see the details of some at the far end of the gallery — but she doesn’t have to see them. She can hear them just fine.
Hear their voices, whispers, screams and cries of lust and loss rise and fall in tides. Hear to her left the clatter of steel and whinnying cry of warhorses as their hoofs pound a skull to dust. Hear to her right the rustle of thick curtained veils and the damp squelching of a dagger in the back.
Just as Kamilah comes beside her Nadya’s legs give way — stopped from collapsing to the ground only by the grace of Kamilah’s supernatural speed.
She claps her hands over her ears and opens her mouth in a silent scream. Feels tears sting her eyes and Adrian’s hands join in holding her up.
Their mouths are moving; her protectors trying in vain to find the source of her agony. She can’t hear a word over them.
“It seems you were right again, my love.”
Like someone’s found the dial in her mind the voices and their noises dim until they’re dull and in the background; a movie on in another room.
With bleary tear-filled vision Nadya looks up, up — focuses on the figure with his back turned to them. His attention unable to be ripped away from the painting as tall as he and a head more.
“How much did we bet?” asks Valdas in a calm echo. He turns and begins a leisurely stroll towards Isseya’s seat.
“Thirty-seven.”
“Shame — but I knew I couldn’t be wrong. I’ll be benevolent this time; you can pick my prizes when we return home.”
It takes everything inside her, which isn’t much left at this point, but Nadya musters up enough of her own voice to speak.
“Wh—What’s… hap-peni—ing… to m-mme…?”
The god-like vampire gives them a fanged grin. Isn’t fazed by anything so weak and unimportant as the snarls Kamilah and Adrian throw his way.
“Something wonderful.”
There’s a change in Adrian — she feels it first, is too slow to react — watches him rush the Trinity in a blur. “Whatever you’re doing to her, st—”
Valdas throws Adrian across the room effortlessly; waves his hand as if swatting a fly.
The younger vampire’s body collides into a stone pillar with a crunch. He falls to the ground limp but conscious. Struggles to stand.
“Adrian stop.” A shudder overtakes her as the voices crescendo again but Kamilah’s ready this time; holds her tight. “We did not come here to fight you, Domine. This is needless torture!”
Isseya snarls. “Is that sympathy, Kamilah? From you of all vampires? It’s disgusting.”
“She is an innocent.”
“She is beloved by that cur,” Isseya throws a gesture as Adrian struggles to stand, “and nothing he does is innocent.”
Her words fall flat as her lover rests his hand on her shoulder. “Isseya — calm yourself. Look in her eyes. She doesn’t know what she holds in her grasp.”
In silence something dawns on the wicked woman’s face — it falls into pity and scorn. “That’s her own fault.”
“I don’t disagree.”
Enough. It’s too much. Make it stop! “Make it-t stop, Kamilah, please…”
“Valdas!”
Whether he’s hesitating because he relishes her pain or because the idea of doing anything for Kamilah disgusts him — it doesn’t matter. Every passing second the voices and sounds clash and collide together and scalding pain stings at her temples.
Then a blink. That’s all it takes for the ancient vampire to cross the room and cup her cheeks in his large palms. She remembers now; recognizes the same face from the backs of her eyelids through the archway. The same features unchanged but now hardened by eternity.
“No!” Adrian cries. Nearly collapses in his haste to separate them but Isseya yanks him back by the throat with an almost feral grin. “Let go of — get away from her! Kamilah! Kamilah do something!”
She does. Looks into Valdas’ red eyes and sees something there Nadya can’t understand.
She doesn’t pull Nadya away from his grasp. Lets it be.
“Kamilah!”
“Trust me, Adrian, please!” And she asks the same thing of Nadya in silence.
Trust me. Please, trust me.
She does. Even when it feels like the noises around her are splitting her skull into fragments she does. When Valdas places two fingers on each temple she does.
There’s a vaguely familiar tugging in her gut — then nothing at all. No noise, no pain, no air on her face or sweat on her brow. There is blackness and a void and the feeling of blood pounding in her temples and roots growing out from the tips of her fingers and toes…
… then it’s gone.
Valdas stays close — she can smell the spice of his clothes. And something deeper than that… two thousand sheer veils hovering between them that she can brush away with a mere thought.
She can see the hall with her eyes closed; feel Kamilah and the leaden weight of her years and Adrian’s, too, the same but different in a way that can’t be defined. Nadya feels all the organs in her body yearning towards a brightness she can only call ‘devotion’ at the other end of the room.
So much blood, so bright…
But around her—around them—the world is empty. Dark and dim; filled with nothing but feathers that arrive on one wind and vanish on the next. The fragility of human life crumbling to a fine powder underneath their touch.
The moon was once bright but no longer holds the same appeal. In a world without cities or smog or the fake light of mankind there was once a forest bathed in the light of the endless stars. And in that forest there was a lover.
But that lover is gone now.
Right?
Nadya inhales and begins to plummet back down — flew up to the moon but wasn’t close enough to touch. Eternity rushes back within her, roots withered and dried and rotting away from her stems. The forest too gone in a single second.
When she opens her eyes the noises are silent. The hall is just a hall — startlingly empty for the crowd and clutter of the shelves they passed.
A rough thumb strokes her cheekbone and brings her back to herself. Causes Nadya to look up into Valdas’ golden eyes. She struggles to catch her breath.
Kamilah strokes her hair — tries and fails to keep the worry from her voice.
“Nadya — are you all right?”
She replies with a nod. Can’t — or maybe just doesn’t want to — tear her eyes away from the man before her.
“You’re so alone…” So many voices have tried to make a home in her head that Nadya doesn’t recognize her own right away. “You cling to what’s left but beyond her there’s… there’s nothing.”
Nadya reaches up and mirrors Valdas’ touch with gentle hands. “You’d rather wither as a corpse than live as a man. They’re the same thing to you; both empty and tired.”
“To know completion only to lose it was to be ripped in two.” Valdas says.
“But… having half of yourself must be better than nothing at all.”
“Such a way of thinking is mortal and beyond me. I wish it weren’t.”
“Eternity doesn’t settle for anything less.”
Her own words surprise her. That’s not Nadya’s way of thinking — it’s so pessimistic. But then again it’s not really her way of thinking now is it?
Valdas confirms the thought with an appraising look.
“Indeed…” His touch slides down her face — she’s seen what those hands can do; their violence. Yet he cradles her gently. “What I would not give for even a moment of your power.”
Power. It breaks the spell they’re under. Makes Nadya push herself away and back into Kamilah’s waiting protection.
She doesn’t have any power.
Hard eyes glance to where Adrian struggles desperately against Isseya’s impossible hold. The look she gives Valdas is pleading. Earnest.
The man waves his hand — silent permission given — and Adrian is at her side.
“What—did he—Nadya—I—”
She lets him know she’s okay with a touch. But that’s not what they came here to do. That’s not what they’re risking everything for. She’s risking everything for him and not the other way around.
“Why did you lie to the Council?” There’s no room for doubt; no room to oppose her. She knows — he knows that she knows.
She just wish she knew how she knew. And the confusion of it makes her skull want to crack open like an egg.
When Valdas doesn’t answer she tries his lover; “Why did you lie and say you weren’t with Adrian? You knew it would condemn him to death. What do you have against him?”
“Turn your accusatory eye elsewhere, little girl,” Isseya snarls, “perhaps to those you so vehemently protect. The best liars hide in plain sight.”
Adrian tenses. “How did I lie? Whatever Vega’s told you about the Ferals —”
“You think we care about a meager infestation?” Valdas barks a laugh; returns to Isseya’s side with a protective arm around her waist. “We’ve seen the likes of worse and weathered them still.”
“So this isn’t about the Council?”
“We couldn’t care less about you, them, or the problems you make for yourselves.”
“We’ve seen it all before.” agrees Isseya.
But Adrian’s struggling — refuses to let it go. “What you heard at the trial was lies; all of it. Vega fabricated it to point the finger at me. I… I don’t know why. I wish I knew why. But if you tell me why he made you lie then maybe I can figure it out.”
Adrian’s focus is on Valdas like he’s the one who makes all the decisions. But Nadya knows better — watches behind him as a peculiar expression melts onto the priestess’ features. She knows that look.
If it wasn’t for Adrian’s healing blood she’d probably still have bruises from that look.
“Wait —” it dawns on her slowly, “— were you there to testify for or against Adrian in the first place?”
Smart girl, says the glint in Valdas’ eyes.
“We were called to speak on behalf of the accused — on Adrian’s behalf. And when certain mysteries came to light we decided it was best to extend the same courtesy to him that was given to us.”
Adrian struggles to make sense of it. “What does that even mean? When did I lie to you? What—what courtesy?”
But it’s like the more questions he asks the more their silent rage builds. There’s a rope being pulled between them and every confused outcry Adrian gives is another slash of the knife. She doesn’t want to see what will happen when it finally snaps.
If she wasn’t still consumed with the raw feeling Valdas left inside of her — some parting gift, jerk — Nadya knows she’d be able to focus. But her insides are sandpaper and every breath, movement, thought makes them grate together.
Her only solace is that Nadya knows what that feeling is like. Felt it on her own level deep inside when she saw Lily losing her grip on the edge of her life. And again when she turned back against her better judgment to watch her friends leap into a Feral mob to keep her safe.
And again when Adrian was sentenced to death.
Eternity doesn’t settle.
The burning in her body is grief without an outlet.
How dare he. Innocent faces hide deceitful minds. How dare he. Our lifetimes are haunted by ghosts we dare not give names to — yet this is more. He is more. But dare we hope again after all this time?
Is it better to hope for a spec of eternity than to grieve for the entirety of it?
“I remember him fondly, Domine, though I would not dare to say my memory is worth more than yours. Strange, though, that Adrian would know nothing of you, your infamy, or your grief.
“And to weigh the bulk of his innocence on a creature that could very well be Cynbel’s reflection… We all saw it — even Kamilah felt haunted by his presence. You did the right thing Valdemaras. You did the right thing to he who would rather see you and your love continue to mourn than help you hope.”
Okay, so, whatever he did to her Nadya very much wants taken back — only because she’s not asleep and not hallucinating and both of those would be preferable to standing where she feels safest in the world yet somehow can’t escape the villainous drawl of Adam Vega.
Even if it answers a lot of unasked questions.
God, please let her be right about this.
“It wasn’t Adrian who lied to you. It was Vega.”
Adrian frowns. “Nadya, what are you talking about?”
“Just what I was going to ask…” growls Valdas in warning. She can feel the rumble of his voice deep in her own breast.
So Nadya turns her words — and attention — to Isseya. The uncontrollable hurricane. The coin of fate.
“Isseya, please. Think about it. You were so angry that night, right? I made you think about him — the one you lost — and you wanted to —”
“I wanted to rip you limb from limb and feed your organs in little pieces to the pond fish.”
Artful. And shudder-worthy. “E-Exactly. So I can’t even imagine what it must have felt like to sit in that trial and see Cadence. He looked just like him.”
“You saw it too…?” She asks in an almost broken whisper. Digs her nails deep into the meat of her lover’s upper arm; makes blood run down in thin strands that begin to drip-drip-drip on the white floor.
Nadya nods. “I did. And if I did then you can be sure Vega did with me. And I think he realized he could use your grief against you and for himself.”
Kamilah stays silent behind her. She doesn’t need to speak — Nadya knows; finally understands what her ominous warning was meant to serve as at Cadence and Katherine’s departure.
There’s a sliver of doubt, now — something hasty and makeshift to mend the fragile rope between them.
Isseya clings to her partner. “I told you, I told you…”
“I know, my love, but —”
“But that,” Nadya interrupts — and keeps going fast before he decides to do something irrational like snap her neck for her insolence, “right there. At the Ball you guys didn’t care who heard you but all of a sudden you were lying in front of the tribunal. You’re better than that — you said so yourself, Valdas.
“You don’t care what happens; to Adrian or to the Council. So why deny it so quickly? What do you gain from lying?”
The man grits his teeth. “If there is a point you ought to reach it. Quickly.”
Her heart begins to race. “Vega talked to you after the Ball didn’t he? He asked you about the questions you asked Cadence and then brought up all those painful memories of your lover, Cynbel.”
“Vega was an old acquaintance.”
“Pretty convenient timing though, huh?”
“He knows better than such insolence. We are —”
“No one cares who you are anymore!” And as the only one in the room with a pulse she really hates how hers keeps skipping every other beat. It’s just not fair. “I’m sorry to be the one to tell you guys but the world moved on even if you didn’t. Nobody cares about the Trinity when there aren’t even three of you.
“Look at the facts, Valdas, please. Vega triggered your grief and — and used your hope, Isseya — to make you think Adrian was lying to you.”
“It… makes a modicum of sense.”
Kamilah steps out from behind her. Pensive thoughts and connected dots race through her mind. “If, through some means, Vega knew the man Adrian would call as his witness — knew the resemblance he bore — then it would be easy to reaffirm your doubts once the trial went in his direction.”
“And how would a youth like Vega know we would choose to deny your Adrian’s claims?” Valdas scoffs.
“Because he has moved on with the world, and knows we will always stay true to one thing.” Isseya relinquishes her bloody grip and coaxes her lover to meet her eyes.
“The rest of the world may burn but we will remain through the ages.”
Nadya, Kamilah, and Adrian watch the couple now enveloped in each other; gentle touches to eternal skin and one kiss in the wake of thousands — maybe even millions.
Adrian tries to advance — moves aside the hand she reaches out in warning — and moves slow and purposeful. Aware of the bloodshed just beneath the surface in front of them.
His sincerity makes his voice break. “I know what it’s like to love someone — and to lose them. How it never really goes away and… and how we have all these years to keep feeling the hurt. If I had even an inkling that your partner was still alive I would have done everything in my power to help you reunite.”
“See? Adrian isn’t capable of what Vega claims. He’s, well,” Kamilah looks him up and down, “he’s too damn soft, frankly.”
Isseya is the first to pull away. Keeps herself in the safety of Valdas’ embrace while scrutinizing Adrian and his words.
“I see none of the Godmaker’s ambition in you. Adam was always prone to bold and fantastical claims but that… that was a lie and he knew it.”
The Godmaker. Nadya doesn’t want to know. One problem at a time.
And speaking of problems — time is going to become one if they don’t start hurrying. She can’t let herself drown in the strangeness of what’s happening.
So here she goes. “The fact of the matter is Vega used you both. He used your loyalty to each other and I’d even say he used the memory of your partner to get what he wanted out of you and out of the Council.
“It’s despicable, and wrong, and downright evil. But he’s a career politician so I can’t even pretend I’m surprised…” Nadya shakes her head to get her thoughts back on track. “So please help us get back at him. Help us clear Adrian’s name and figure out who the real person at fault is.”
The couple exchange looks — Nadya’s actually sweating waiting for an answer. Then Kamilah makes… a surprisingly good point.
“If mortal altruism is not enough to spur you forward, then consider the state of your reputation should Adam succeed through manipulating you.”
That makes up their minds. If Nadya’s a little disappointed in them for it she doesn’t let it show. Something’s better than nothing.
At first glance it looks like Valdas’ focus is elsewhere — perhaps in the symbolic distance. Then Nadya follows his eyes across the hall to a painting alone in the far corner. Tucked away as if to be forgotten on purpose.
A dull throbbing starts in her temples. Not the same roaring pain from before but similar. The longer she looks the stronger it gets.
She doesn’t know how she knows; she simply does. Can hear it in the back of her mind the same way she’s heard everything else this night.
“What are the chances that this scrap of canvas will survive? Especially if you insist we leave it behind?”
“Do you not wish to see what will become of it, my dear? To see if it — like us — persists the ages?”
“A grand experiment for a later date. I have a meeting with Parliament at dusk.”
“Parliament will not rot from the inside after one day, Holy One. Stay with us. I beseech you.”
“You know how to tempt me so.”
“I may have an inkling after all these years.”
“And for the years yet to come.”
That’s why they came here. Nadya’s certain. Knows that if she runs across the room she’ll see two familiar faces and the one from the painting at Marcel’s castle. The Trinity.
Another familiar face, too. It lingers in the doorway at the far end of the room; silent, stoic.
She lets herself take in the gaunt features for what feels like the first time. Notes every inch of greying flesh and black veins pulsing out of throbbing temples disfigured with bumps like horns. Stares at lips peeled back and bitten off in the frenzy of hunger; the sharp and almost pristine tip of every fanged tooth.
The yellowing illness around bulging eyes. Pupils narrowed into slits. The way they tremble and struggle to hold her transfixed in their horror and, strangely, their splendor too.
She opens her mouth to speak. Breaks the spell they were held under.
The Feral lets out an unearthly howl and rushes in for the kill.
