The man in background is Jehan Ango, shipowner from Dieppe that financed the french expeditions to the Americas in the 16th century. The flaming salamander is based on a fireplace sculpture in La Possonnière manor. On right, the pernambuco, brazilwood tree in English, pau-brasa in Portuguese, gave its name to Brazil. Here is a close-up image of Station XII, Jesus Dies upon the Cross. The stations were produced for the church in the 1920s by Ralph Adams Cram. Cram sets these Renaissance style narratives, drawing both from Italian and Northern sources, within these charming Tudor Gothic frames.
