How to stay safe when 999 won't come:

If you haven't heard, hundreds if not thousands of paramedics across the UK will be striking on the 21st of December, asking for better working conditions and pay. Even those striking don't know exactly what is going to happen, they don't know if they'll get paid, but they do know that for the continued existence of a free, national ambulance service, this has to happen. Paramedics are burnt out, suffering, and unable to afford to stay in a job which actively lowers your quality of life.

On the 21st of December, the ambulance service will be experiencing demand it will not be able to meet. This is nothing new. News sites are fear mongering, saying that on the strike date elderly people who have fallen likely won't get ambulances and will have to wait, possibly over 12 hours. This is already happening. Please do not turn away from your NHS when they need your support the most.

How you can stay safe:

Only the most life-threatening calls can be guaranteed to get an ambulance and even those will become overwhelming. Consider carefully if you need an ambulance and make the sensible choice.

Take yourself, a bus, a taxi, or get a lift to A&E if you can and it is safe to do so.

Make use of 111, walk-in, and urgent care facilities.

Ensure you take proper safety measures when undertaking any risky activities, including driving in the dark and icy conditions.

If an elderly relative has fallen and are uninjured, try to move them to a comfortable place if safe to do so, leave them in position if they have injured their neck or back and keep them warm.

Download and use the St John Ambulance first aid app, in the case of a delay, you may be the only one available to help.

The way so many of Buck’s traumas are connected to the firetrucks he’s constantly around at work. He got crushed by a ladder truck, managed to get himself and Christopher to the top of a truck during the tsunami, crawled under yet another firetruck to save Eddie when he was shot before carrying Eddie into the cabin of that firetruck, was struck by lightning on the top of the ladder. First of all: if his new trauma with whatever happens during the season finale involves the ambulance instead, that’ll be literally every combination of vehicles used by the LAFD since the captain’s truck was what he used to drive himself and Eddie to Charlie’s apartment before the shooting. And yeah, obviously his traumas are going to be connected to firefighting equipment and vehicles, he is a firefighter after all. But the variety of traumas he’s experienced is horrifying when you imagine what he probably goes through trying to recover emotionally from the trauma. He might repeatedly re-traumatize himself because he doesn’t want to be anything but a firefighter, even after learning a little more about how he’s not expendable and shouldn’t consider himself as such. I’ve read so many fics out there that include the trauma of these events being intrinsically connected to his work as a firefighter. Basically, including his reactions to the first time he has to clean the bottom side of the ladder truck after the bombing, or the first time he goes up the ladder after being struck by lighting. And everyone (fandom-wise) was so shocked when he literally rolled under the firetruck to get to Eddie during the shooting. Now, I’m not sure if it’s a case of not everyone is traumatized the way I’m laying out here, the writers refuse to write an arc like that, or we’ll see the trauma drawn out in a different way that’s not connected to the firefighting vehicles (like we typically have in the past), but whatever the reason for the lack of trauma on the job, I know the fic writers have got us all well in hand.

Okay y’all, I was tagging this post and I realized I honest to god forgot the ambulance trauma from Buck and Eddie getting kidnapped by Dom and Mitchell WOW. Genuinely don’t know how I could’ve almost forgotten that because it’s probably one of my favorite sequence of events dramatized by this show. And well, I guess we’ve got the unholy quartet here already, but if there’s additional ambulance trauma for Buck in the season finale, I’m not opposed lol. Happy week leading up to the season finale everybody, let’s all hope we get all the angst with none of the grief.

Blood donation was an ABJECT FAILURE 🤪😭🩸

Who could’ve imagined I would experience a pack failure on my first donation rendering my donation 100% useless. I was IN the chair and being ACTIVELY BLED when the nurse realized the sampling part of the pack was faulty and that they would not be able to test my blood pre-transfusion, thus making it not appropriate for purpose. I gave maybe 200ml out of the standard 470ml before the donation had to be stopped, and ofc I cannot go back and donate more until I’ve waited the same time as everyone else. I have rebooked for October and I hope things are better this time

Ambulance Strike Days

Hey! More UK ambulance service strikes are in the works. As always, safeguards are in place to make these days as safe as possible and not everyone nor every union is striking at the same time. The following are all the confirmed ambulance strikes I know of coming up, please check your individual area:

10th February - frontline staff and call handlers

22nd February - frontline staff

6th March - frontline staff

7th March - nurses

20th March - frontline staff

On these days the service will be under even more pressure than usual so please, please avoid calling 999 if you can. Use alternative services whenever you can, unless someone is actively dying 999 should be your last resort!! Stay safe, stay informed, stay supportive.

Over 100’000 people have been killed in the last year. More bombs have been dropped on Gaza in the last year than the Blitz, the bombing of Dresden, and Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. Yesterday CNN published a piece about IDF soldiers running over hundreds of people with bulldozers, and the point of the piece was how traumatising it was for the soldiers, how they can’t eat meat anymore after mangling people into meat. There are death marches happening in Jabalia in the north of Gaza right now. People are being lined up, men and boys separated from the group, and brought to mass graves where they are killed or buried alive. Since more than 70% of civilian infrastructure in Gaza has been destroyed, Israel is just bombing people in tents now where they burn alive. The bombs killing people are American bombs, the money funding it is American money, the political cover that allows it to continue comes from American politicians.

I don’t know what it will take for people in the West to acknowledge the scale of what is happening. I don’t know if I have to share a steady stream of images of people’s mangled bodies, not able to rest even in death, I don’t know if I have to tell the stories of the Palestinians I know, of the children I know who escaped Gaza this year and are rehabilitating limb amputations, if I have to do thought experiments with you saying “pretend Beirut is New York and they are bombing outside JFK and Columbia Presbyterian”. If I have to explain that the number of children killed is not incidental but intentional. It is beyond exhausting to watch people be so flippant about the hell on earth that they are funding and electing. Vote for whoever the fuck you want, I get the stakes, but acknowledge the reality of what is going on, acknowledge the reality of your choices, acknowledge that you live in a country that is making you choose between complicity in genocide and complicity in genocide
