It’s that time of year again! I, and possibly a good number of you reading this, just spent the whole of 2018 in the Gorillaz fandom. Congratulations! You made it! Because this year...kinda sucked. Not just for the Gorillaz fandom but, if this Washington Post article is any indication, for the rest of the world too. Maybe on an individual level there were moments of light. Maybe Gorillaz was your moment of light. If it was I’m genuinely happy because that means you probably found a way to avoid or ignore all the chaos that went down this year. But overall? Fandom was rife with disappointments, confusion and conflict with some good parts (for me, at least) sprinkled in here and there. Below is a personal reflection on the top 10 significant events in fandom of 2018.
1. Murdoc Goes to Prison
2018 started out peacefully for fandom. We were just finishing up sharing our scans of G-Magazine and theorizing over the next album when we’re treated with this - a nineteen second mocap of a frantic Murdoc accepting a Brit Award with an “oh by the way I’m going to prison.” We didn’t know why or for how long, and, though fans were confused and Murdoc going to prison is a tired, overplayed storyline at this point, it was cherished as any new Gorillaz content, especially animation, is cherished. Memes were made, most notably the #FreeMurdoc hashtag complete with a petition which was acknowledged by creators and caused the first big outburst in fandom for its messy tag. I did what I always do with Murdoc videos and went through the entire thing frame by frame to collect screenshots. Little did I know that this would be the only time I would get to indulge in this beloved past time. Little did I know that I would be wearing the same expression as Murdoc is in this screencap this entire phase.
2. Murdoc hate
Murdoc hate has always existed. It’s also generally accepted. However, when it was confirmed that Murdoc was going to be in prison for an undetermined amount of time and that he may not even speak this phase (thanks a lot, phase 5 plot!) it reached unprecedented levels of viciousness. Some fans took every opportunity to drag him in the main tag, start debates with anyone who might mention one positive thing about him and expressed how they genuinely wanted him to die and/or never come back. It kinda reminded me of this season of MTV’s The Challenge when everyone ganged up on Johnny Bananas. Like, yes he’s an asshole and yes this was probably long overdue but also omg when is there and end point? Is there an end point? It was like some people hated Murdoc more than they liked Gorillaz. For some additional context - this tense environment was born out of an astoundingly severe conflict that happened in spring where three separate fandom storms that had been brewing since late 2017 collided into one huge mess. Discords were raided, friendships were lost, the police were called (I’m not even exaggerating). I won’t go into it more but if you were there, you know what i’m talking about. Murdoc wasn’t the cause of this, but his character was at the center of one of those storms and the canon sending him to prison only reignited the ire towards him. For awhile Murdoc fans weren’t sure were exactly they stood with the greater fandom, and new fans were confused as to why this one green character was the source of so much grief for haters and fans alike. This continued for most of the year (and still continues today), hence why it’s getting a mention now.
3. Ace
Believe it or not Murdoc and Ace are confirmed #friends. You wouldn’t know that from all the Murdoc vs Ace content that sprung out of this year but Ace was the one who joined Murdoc for hot chocolate after he got out of prison, “they go way back” etc etc. Ace was a big deal because it was probably the only time the fandom guessed something correctly this entire year. Jamie began posting cryptic pictures of Noodle with this unidentified man, then another with only the Ace card visible. “It a Powerpuff Girls crossover!” Some people claimed. But that seemed so random? Really? A B-list cartoon villain from a cartoon targeting an entirely different demographic? More likely than you think! Ace never spoke a word and he wasn’t allowed to smoke or have sex. People obsessed over him anyways. To this day I still have no idea who he is or what kind of personality he has or really anything. But he wasn’t a bad guy (more on that later) and he was Murdoc’s friend so he’s alright with me.
4. Messaging Denholm
By now the fandom was fraught with distress on so many levels. We were lost. We needed someone to guide us, to show us the way, to show us the #truth. I don’t know exactly who started this trend but it soon spread around Reddit and other social media sites that Jamie’s son Denholm was replying to dm’s on Instagram and soon, he was graced with a deluge of of inquiries from casual fans and Murdoc stans alike. The thing is though - he actually *did* answer them. Many of us had spoilers re: Murdoc and Ace’s friendship, Murdoc getting out of prison, etc. MONTHS before they happened. I believe he even told us that 2D was fine back in like, June or something. Denholm knew! Eventually we pissed him off but it didn’t stop him from answering. He just answered angrier. It also caused fans to argue more because people started accusing others of photoshopping his responses and nothing can ever be done peacefully here. I haven’t followed up on this story singe the end of summer but I think fans have finally scaled back on the messaging. But I hear he’s working on a Gorillaz documentary for 2019 so...I’m sure we’ll be talking again soon.
5. Noodle
I want to take a moment here to also acknowledge the struggle AMA Gorillaz hosted on, of all places, Youtube. Thankfully, diligent redditors compiled a google doc of all the answers otherwise they would lost thanks to Youtube’s confusing interface. ANYHOW. The answer that stirred up the biggest milieu of debate and confusion came from Noodle. This isn’t exactly my lane - I don’t wade into Noodle issues and I don’t id as part of the LGBT community - so I’m not going to say much here other than, at the very least, this was the second or third time she has officially denied any interest in dating her bandmates.
6. 2D’s journal/2Doc
Okay first of all: 2DOC...jk, jk...jk? But no, honestly, this actually did become a big story this year, much bigger than expected. The release of 2D’s journal was the catalyst here, revealing a number of drawings and images of Murdoc. “Souk Eye,” a song that came with visuals featuring close ups of Murdoc’s face and vaguely romantic lyrics was depicted in 2D’s journal next to yet another drawing of Murdoc. We were confused! 2D didn’t care that Murdoc was gone, right? 2Doc shippers were intrigued. I was hesitant. We were all called delusional. However, “Souk Eye” was later confirmed to be a love song by Damon Albarn, and Murdoc and 2D have both claimed their relationship is “better” since the end of phase 5 (hhMmMmM). Obvi, take this with a grain of salt because it’s Gorillaz but the journal was instrumental in confirming how closely The Now Now (and the entire plot of phase 5, really) was tied to Murdoc and 2D’s relationship, particularly what 2D thinks of Murdoc. Think of it as platonic if you want but they share a closeness on SOME level and the content of 2018, from interviews to the Murdoc chats to the album itself, supports this. I rest my case.
7. Lost theories
Pour one out for all the lost theories. If you were a new fan this year you probably came up with a theory, or you got really invested in a theory. Some examples: HIM from PPG orchestrating the destruction of Gorillaz by possessing 2D and getting Murdoc framed with Ace as a double agent, or Murdoc’s imprisonment being tied to his trouble with EMI from phase 4, or phase 5 being about time travel, or Murdoc crashing Demon Dayz fest and fighting El Mierda on stage, or 2D being the one to frame Murdoc or Murdoc’s inmate number (24602) being a Les Mis reference implying that he’d get a character arc similar to Jean Valjean...you get the idea. But there are dreams that cannot beeee, and there are storms we cannot weather. You can argue about the budget or G-Shock or whatever but the truth is Gorillaz is just disorganized. This is their Brand™.
8. The Murdoc Chatbot
Gorillaz did an interesting thing this year - it let us talk to Murdoc! Sometime around June, he writers decided that the plot of phase 5 would be best spent, not on exploring the band’s dynamic with Murdoc gone or developing Ace’s personality, but on Murdoc! Fandom spent most of the summer following Murdoc’s experience in prison and helping to “free” him via a chatbot you could access through Kik, Instagram or Facebook. Basically, Murdoc was Paddington from Paddington 2, and we the fans were supposed to be the Browns trying to break him out and prove his innocence. Other fans begrudgingly used the chatbot to make fun of him or tell him to die and follow along with the story (it was the only place you could get plot updates). It was a neat idea as well as a funny experience to pretend to be talking to him, and the plot was very engaging at times. It was the chatbot that revealed the very dissatisfying (albeit happy) conclusion that Murdoc is no Paddington and had lied about everything - being framed, El Mierda etc. - but felt really bad about it. His apology was basically this. I’m going to also tag the #FreeMurdoc merchandise debacle, how overpriced it was and how it ended up being pointless anyways because Murdoc wasn’t framed and didn’t need to be “freed” onto this, because it all falls under the same event. Oh, and you got to talk to Noodle sometimes, too.
9. G-shock ends phase 5
I put “ends phase 5″ in strikethrough because G-Shock on its own is actually pretty cool, and made up for the lack of videos (2 in total) that were released this year. The now Murdoc inclusive band goes to space and starts an alien war! That’s fun! Completely removed from whatever phase 5 was, but fun! (And I say that genuinely) What was messy about G-shock was that it came out of nowhere. The final Murdoc chat, that was SUPPOSED to reveal the ending to the prison arc, hadn’t even happened but suddenly, Murdoc was back to sell watches to aliens with the rest of the band and Ace was gone. But the final chat was delayed by a month and G-Shock came out anyways. Out of this came memes about how phase 5 ended so Gorillaz could try to sell us watches.
10. Cass Browne Tells us the True Plastic Beach Ending
We ended 2018 with not one but two major interviews from the fancast, Hallelujah Monkeyz but I’m choosing to cover their latest interview with Cass Browne, writer of Rise of the Ogre. If you were new this year you probably heard older fans mention ad nauseam how much they missed this guy name Cass. Well, Cass came back and dropped actual bombs about the true ending of phase 3, Murdoc’s lost backstory and the Plastic Beach book he found AND that a sequel to ROTO was planned and dropped. Understandably, this sparked a lot of discussion and also revealed just how important Cass was to the continuity of the Gorillaz storyline. Back then, we had ROTO and Plastic Beach. Today, we have “Murdoc drowns in poop and reunites with the band offscreen”
And that’s the year! And look I’m not saying this because I’m a stan but this was a Murdoc year. He was at the center of like, at least 80% of the angst and joy of fandom and I could make separate “top 10 Murdoc moments” or “top 10 2Doc moments.” I guess for me, on an individual level, it was an alright year. For one, I actually talked to more people this year and met some really great friends (something I don’t typically do in fandom). I also get to check “write a fanfic” off my bucket list (it’s still a WIP but it’s the first WIP I’ve ever had so I’m counting it). And personally, my life has changed and without getting into too many details I’ve overcome a lot, grown professionally and...I think I can be kinda proud of myself for that. I expect 2019 to be a slower year than this one, and, I think the fandom needs that. Hopefully I’ll still see some of you around because I’m going to be here for at least the next few months while I finish up you know what.
Honorable mentions: 2D “Dies” of Ligma and other 2D memes, 2D writes The Now Now, Benjamin Clementine says he regrets working with Gorillaz, Noodles old VA confirms Jamie ghosted her and recast Noodle without telling her, Gorillaz delay the final Murdoc chat by a month, Demon Dayz doesn’t get streamed, Music video releases - “Humilty” and “Tranz”, Cyborg Noodle returns with boobs and causes debate, the “Let Ace Speak” petition,
#endofyear#long post /#there's a 2doc mention in here just fyi if you want to avoid#not as organized as last year's that's for sure#but here it is!#again this is more for my records and tradition but also here to read if you want

I would like to thank @leaalda for making these amazing banners.
This is an effort to spread the word about all fan fiction writers in our little fandom. If you would like to be featured or nominate a writer, please contact me. Please reblog this post if you can and check out some of @believe-that-you-can-my-friend work!
1. First things first, if someone wanted to read your stories where can they find them.
My tumblr account is believe-that-you-can-my-friend and anyone can find my masterlist by clicking on the menu button (the three parallel lines at the top of my sidebar) and then choosing “My Bughead Stories”. You can also find me on AO3.
2. Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m Vera, I’m from Greece and I’m currently on the 23rd decade of my life. I’m a Classical Studies graduate and I’m considering doing a Master’s too. I’m a major foodie, a fashion and style enthusiast, an avid dancer and an old school rock lover. A quite sarcastic human being trying to make it in this world with the attitude of your average clown-friend.
3. What do you never leave home without?
Probably my phone, as true to our 21st century standards. Plus, my headphones and my sunglasses.
4. Are you an early bird or a night owl?
I’m a night owl for sure. I hate early mornings and I love sleep but I also can never go to bed before 2 or 3 am.
5. If you could live in any fictional world which one would you choose and why?
I would want to live in the Pokémon world or the Harry Potter universe but during the Marauders era. Witty and utterly smitten James Potter, rebel with a cause Sirius Black, the First Wizarding War, this is a true fantasy right there that I’ll never ever outgrow.
6. Who is the most famous person you’ve ever met?
There are a lot of Greek people that you guys, obviously, won’t know. Not many international celebrities in my resume, I’m afraid. But I briefly chatted and took a picture with Jim Chapman from YouTube while I was visiting London two years ago.
7. What are some of your favorite movies/TV?
I enjoy a lot of different movie genres but I guess an old Hollywood one, some good old Hitchcock or anything drama are my typical choices most times. Out of the top of my head, definitely Gone with The Wind, Casablanca, Pulp Fiction, The Breakfast Club and such. As for TV shows, Lost is always first in my heart. Current favorites would be Sense8, Stranger Things, Westworld, Riverdale.
8. What are some of your favorite bands/musicians?
That’s a question that would take me pages to answer. Long story short, I’m a cultural chaos regarding music. I listen to almost everything, my Spotify has a tone of personal playlists and my vinyl collection is reaching a terrifying extend. My favorite genre is definitely classic rock but I also really love alternative rock, indie rock, and rock ‘n’ roll. On an average day, I’m usually blasting something along the lines of The 1975, then Pink Floyd, then Frank Sinatra, then Tchaikovsky, then Kanye West, then The Killers and so on and it’s a miracle that I still manage to stay a somewhat sane person.
9. Favorite Books?
Anything Jane Austen, Bronte Sisters or Dostoyevsky can get me going. But for the level of angst and devotion and truly wicked love my favorite one is Wuthering Heights.
10. Favorite Food?
Chicken curry with rice. I also really love shrimps.
11. Biggest pet peeve?
Probably people that chew very loudly. Or ignorant and uneducated people, not in the academic sense of the word, but ill-mannered and rude.
12. What did you want to be when you were little? What do you want to be now?
For many years I wanted to be an architect. This plan though sunk because my sketching skills are equivalent of a two year old. So, I ended up studying the Classics (basically the study of the Greco-Roman world, particularly of its languages and literature, but also including philosophy, history, and archaeology.) This field and area of studies is something I very much enjoy and value but I don’t really see it as my lifetime job. What fascinates me and makes me passionate about is Journalism so I’m thinking about extending my studies in the journalistic field as well. And then of course there is writing; the ultimate dream.
13. What are your biggest fears? Do you have any strange fears?
I’m scared of wasps, only because I’m allergic to a lot of things and, seriously, I don’t wanna push my luck. Another one would be my odd phobia of getting nauseous and being sick. For some weird reason I associate vomiting with death. Other strange fears, no, nothing comes to mind. As for more fundamental ones, it’s the fear of ending up alone; loneliness is something that scares me deeply. Also, disappointing my inner perfectionist by being average or not good enough at any aspect of my life.
14. When you are on your deathbed what would be the one you’d regret not doing?
Live more. I have a very composed and rational mentality, I always think first and then act and generally I’m more of an observer than a doer. I regret, for example, not being a crazier teenager or a more reckless college student or generally a little bit more “loose”. Hopefully, my introverted self will stop watching stoically life passing her by and take more chances by the time I reach that final moment, haha.
Okay… let’s talk about your writing!
15. Which is your favorite of the fics you've written for the Bughead fandom?
Where The Wild Roses Grow – Angst is the air I breathe, enough said.
16. Which was the hardest to write, in terms of plot?
Up until now I used to write only Bughead prompts and one-shots so, plot wise, I can’t think of any of them causing me too much headache. I could say Fruit Punch Lips & Leather Jacket Dreams, only because of the length of the chapters and the hurricane of ideas I had in my mind. Right now I’m trying my hand at my first multi-chaptered fic for the Bughead fandom and I can definitely say that it is proving to be quite the task in terms of planning and prioritizing.
17. How do you come up with the ideas for you fic(s)? Do you people watch? Listen to music? Get inspired by TV/movies?
For me, it’s mostly TV and movies. I always make parallels between plotlines and couples so a lot of ideas do come from stuff that I have seen on the big screen or during a marathon of an old show. But they also come from everyday life, I mean I could be discussing something with my best friend or doing groceries or driving and something along the way would strike me and demand from me to write it on paper.
18. Idea that you always wanted to write but could never make work?
I really really wanted (and still want, to be honest) to write a Dancing With The Stars Bughead fic. I know it’s crazy and totally random but the idea had stuck in my head while I was watching some dancing videos on YouTube and instantly I had everything planned; the roles, the plot, the dancing sessions, the choreographies, the drama, everything. I gave up on the idea merely because it’s quite difficult to portray such show on paper and I was afraid that the scenes in my head would turn out totally different if I attempted to write them, so I’ll treasure this story in my heart and think fondly about it whenever I listen to a song I had picked for a Bughead dance-off. But you never know; maybe my muse will be more confident about helping me give life to this idea in the future.
19. Least favorite plot point/chapter/moment you’ve written?
I wouldn’t say it’s my least favorite but I don’t feel very confident about Heliophilia, the second chapter of Fruit Punch Lips & Leather Jacket Dreams. There are a lot of things that I like in the chapter obviously, but I find the beginning a tad cheesy and then at the part with Betty’s and Jughead’s date I believe that I just ramble on and on with no purpose whatsoever. I was very inspiration-deprived while working on that chapter so, to me at least, it feels like not my best work.
20. Favorite plot point/chapter/moment you’ve written?
Jughead raised as a Serpent in my latest fic. I like the dynamic the gang element gives to his character and I really wanted to explore it in my own little universe. It just adds another layer to his personality and diverse characters are always the most fun to work with. Also, #GirlNextDoor was very fun to write. Being in Jughead’s shoes as an accomplished writer and envisioning future Bughead in their own adult apartment had me overwhelmed with lovely feelings.
21. Favorite character to write?
Jughead, for sure. Maybe because I relate more to his quite nature or maybe it’s the fact that I appreciate the writer in him and his old soul, which are again qualities that I have too as a person. He has so much potential as a character, so many layers to peel off. Yeah, Jughead Jones is a delight for me to write.
22. Favorite line or lines of dialogue that you've written?
I don’t think I have something specific in mind. If I go back and read any of my stories, I always find something that I feel pretty confident about, either that’s a sentence or a whole paragraph. I guess that’s why it takes me so long to update; I always check and double-check and reread and erase and add until I feel positive that what I’m putting out is something I’m quite satisfied to present to all of you. That and the fact that me, a Victor Hugo wannabe, doesn’t know the usage and the importance of a full stop!
23. Best comment/review you’ve ever received?
Every single one. Literally. The fact that somebody takes the time to write even a single “great work” means the world. Yes, the long, commentary-like reviews are always an extra delight; every author would agree on that, because, we love receiving feedback that shows the emotion and the reaction our words brought to each reader. It’s very direct and on-point. But even just a thumb’s up or an incoherent array of vowels can literally make my day!
24. How do you handle bad reviews or comments?
I’m one of the fortunate ones that never got any bad reviews or hate comments. I hope it stays that way because, on a good day, my confidence as a writer (and as a person in general) is beneath zero! But constructive criticism is always welcomed and wanted.
25. If you could change anything in any of your stories, what would it be?
The occasional typos! They drive me nuts, I hate them and I hate myself for them. Also, I’d like to remind myself to put a damn full stop every once in a while, not only a plethora of commas in insanely long sentences!
26. What is your favorite story you’ve ever written? Any fandom?
I was very into Spaleb (Spencer and Caleb from Pretty Little Liars) for as much as it lasted and, amongst a few other stories, I’ve written an one-shot titled The First Cup of Coffee about the four times Spencer gets the first cup of coffee in the morning and a fifth that she realizes she wants Caleb to have that privilege. Basically, it’s five snapshots of their life together and the growth of their relationship through the years and I really enjoyed writing it and generally envisioning a future about that couple. I also had a great time writing about Klaus and Caroline from The Vampire Diaries. But none of my previous fanfiction experiences amounts to the utter excitement and joy writing for Bughead fills me with.
27. What are you reading right now? Both fan fiction and general fiction?
Fanfiction wise, I need a lot of catching up to do. I have so many fics that I either want to continue or start reading and so little time but I’m getting there. It’s personal at this point! As for general fiction, I’m reading Uncle Vanya by Chekhov and some various poetry.
28. Do you have an advice for writers that want to get into this fandom but might be scared?
Just write. Open a plain document and write. Write whatever you have in that brilliant head of yours, write what you would read if you were about to search between genres and plotlines. Don’t think about note numbers or people’s reaction; just write what your heart desires and your muse urges you too. If you enjoy what you write then, trust me, everyone is going to enjoy it too. Don’t doubt yourself and don’t try to change your style or adjust to any norms you might consider as successful. Writing is personal, a kind of identity, and it’s unique and mesmerizing so proudly present your own identity to the world. Also, be sure to support your fellow writers. We are all a team here, a group of people that enjoy the same passion, and love and recognition is always a must. So applaud your fellow Buggies and applaud yourself for everything that you put out in this fandom, either that is a 40k fic or just a fifty-word paragraph. What you write matters and it might change somebody’s day. So share it and never second-guess yourself.

Dishonored Retrospective Part 11: Death of the Outsider Changes
My friends we have finally reached the end; Death of the Outsider. At the time of writing this, this is the final part of the Empire’s story; even if Arcane ever decides to revisit this world, the story that started with a man being marked by a demigod so he could save his daughter is over, and for the conclusion we are going up against that very demigod.
I will come clean with my bias immediately and say that I absolutely love this game. It’s my favorite in the whole series, both in terms of gameplay and story. So without further ado, let’s get started.
Story and Overview:
Death of the Outsider came out in 2017. It was originally planned to be an expansion of Dishonored 2, like KoD and BW were, but it ended up becoming a stand-alone adventure instead. In keeping with tradition, the protagonist has once again changed, and this time we play as Billie Lurk, right after the events of the second game.
It’s a new day in Dunwall; Emily has taken back the throne, the new Duke is ruling Serkonos and after 15 years and everything that happened in the previous game, Billie decides it’s finally time to find Daud. Inspired by nightmares in which she sees the Void and loses her arm and eye, she sets sail for Karnaca and docks at an abandoned carriage line near the Albarca Baths.
Karnaca has changed since last you saw it. Not only does it have a new Duke, but depending on what you did with Paolo in the last game, the Howlers are no longer the big bads around. They have been replaced by a new, much darker gang called the Eyeless, and these guys are heavy into the occult. The gang consists of a lot of different factions you’ve already fought before; Howlers, Witches and random thugs, which is fitting since the fall of both Paolo and Breanna have left a power vacuum on the streets of the city. This is also a handy way for the developers to reuse enemy models, while still keeping the story consistent.
One thing that hasn’t changed is the friendliness of both the Grand Guard and the regular City Watch. There are wanted posters everywhere for Meagan Foster, meaning that Emily was much less forgiving than she made it out to be in the last game. You will still want to avoid any official law enforcement, so it’s business as usual.
Enemies:
DotO continiues in the tradition of KoD and BW in that we have a few modified and few new enemies. First we have the City Watch, Grand Guard and Overseers, and for our gang quota we have the Eyeless. The first three are the same factions you have always fought, and as I mentioned the Eyeless are a joint group of some of the enemies you fought in Dishonored 2.
In addition we have some more Clockwork soldiers, though these guys are a nerfed version. They can’t see from the back anymore, and are much smaller, though they compensate for it with the world’s creepiest smile! I don’t know if I’d want to put my money in a bank that has psycho-robot guards that smile.
For the new enemies we have the Blind Sisters of the Oracular Order, the Cultists and the Envisioned. The Sisters are the female counterpart of the Overseers who rarely leave the Abbey, but have done so now because of the whole the world is cracking and the Void is seeping through. You were introduced to them in the Royal Conservatory level of the previous game, but this is the first time you actually get to meet them. They are as, if not more dangerous than their Overseer brethren, and if I have one complaint about them it’s probably that they have no interesting abilities or powers. They are just female Overseers with swords.
The cultists are similar to the Eyeless, if the Eyeless were as, if not more fanatical than the Overseers. They are an odd mix of scholars and murderers, and their designs are quite cool in that their faces are starting to turn to stone. They also become invulnerable if they are alerted, though I’m not sure if this is a glitch or an actual ability.
Their Envisioned cousins on the other hand, are possibly the toughest enemy to kill in these games. They are made of stone, and practically indestructible. They are the highest form of whatever the cult is trying to achieve; immortal, eternal and unperturbed by mortal affairs. The original cultists who killed the Outsider have now become Envisioned.
Weapons, Powers, and Gameplay:
For the weapons, Billie has even more variety than Emily. Like Daud, she uses a launcher instead of a crossbow and also like him she uses electric bolts instead of sleep darts. There are grenades, spring razors, sticky grenades, rewire tools, and stun mines and my new favorite weapon, the hook mine which can be lethal or non-lethal depending on how you use it. It’s pretty great option with some hilarious results.
The biggest and best change are by far, Billie’s powers.
Like with Emily, the developers decide that Billie too should spend the first level powerless, but they learned their lesion and made the level much more appropriate in difficulty for an under-powered character. It doesn’t feel like you should be able to use your powers but can’t for some reason.
Once Billie does get her powers, (in a pretty gruesome way thanks to the Outsider), her arm and eye get replaced with pieces of the void. She now has the ability to zoom into things (Corvo style) and reshape her arm into a sword. She also gets 3 powers which can’t be upgraded by runes and deplete mana when used. They are: a version of Blink called Displace; a version of Dark Vision called Foresight; and an entirely new power called Semblance which allows Billie to steal the face of anyone around her and wear it for a limited amount of time.
Not only are these powers super fun to use, but they can also be used in conjunction with each-other to traverse the levels in very creative ways. For example Displace is a very interesting twist on Blink; it allows you to place a marker and then displace to it. You can’t place a marker behind an obstacle and if you place a marker where someone else is standing, they will explode.
Foresight is a bit like Eagle Vision from Assassin’s Creed; it allows you to mark objects and enemies, but it also lets you travel in spirit form through grates, holes and even fly. What’s more, it can be used in conjunction with Displace, where you can place a marker in spirit form and therefore circumvent locked doors and obstacles.
This isn’t to say that Corvo or Daud or even Emily didn’t have interesting powers, but unfortunately a lot of them were geared towards a more high chaos style of play. The game never really encourages you to explore these powers in a real way, with very, very few exceptions in the first game like having to use Bend Time to get out of the duel with Lord Shaw. With Daud and Emily especially, upgrading powers like Far Reach and Summon Assassin is pointless if you are paying low chaos, because they only make your powers MORE lethal instead of helping you explore the world in more fun way.
Here, not only can you not upgrade the powers (thereby rendering them useless) but also none of them are inherently lethal. You can use Displace like that if you want to, but that’s not its primary use. Moreover, the game has entire challenges designed around these powers and using them, so it actively encourages you to use them and get comfortable with them. It honestly made me want to replay the other games by exploring the powers even more than I had before because it’s so fun.
Mana is no longer a resource you have to collect or buy, but this time around bonecharms are more important, since Billie can’t upgrade her powers. I will admit that I never paid too much attention to bonecharms in any of the other games, other than for collection purposes; this is the first game in which I considered crafting and had to really think about which charms were better suited for what level.
Another change is the absence of Outsider Shrines. Since the connection to the Void has been severed for a lot of witches and occultists (and Billie doesn’t need runes), there are no shrines in the game. Instead the Outsider speaks to Billie through rifts in the Void, which thanks to her new magic eye she can now see. These take the same form as the rifts we saw in Crack in the Slab and can be anything from photographs to wanted posters. They also cause some funny contradictions which we’ll get to in the level breakdown.
Billie also has a heart relic, similar to the one the Outsider gifts Corvo in the first game, except hers it’s a gift from Deidre (implying that Deidre was some type of a witch?). It allows Billie to listen to and understand rats which is a neat power. They will often warn you about impending danger, secret passages and generally cryptic warnings.
Favours, Black Markets and side-quests are also back. Favors can no longer be purchased outright, but this time they are rewards for Contracts, which Billie can take on and complete. There are tons of these, ranging from the lethal to the non, with some rather hilarious ones like killing a mime or robbing a bank teller. They can be found on notice boards in the Black Markets and are a fun addition to the content that also ties Billie more to what Daud was doing in the DLC with the favors.
Speaking of Daud, he’s one of 3 returning characters, other than Billie and the Outsider. We also have a ton new faces, which we’ll go over in the level breakdown but I’ll just list them here: Jeannette Lee, Dolores Michaels, Eolina Rey, Euterio Cienfuegos, Shan Yun, Ivan Jackoby, Sister Rosewyn and Brother Cardoza.
One thing that I do like to mention now, is how much these games took leaps of progress in terms of diversity. If you remember the original game, it had like 5 female characters in total, no female enemies, and no poc. Fast forward to this game, and our lead is a bisexual, disabled black woman, the main villains are an overweight Asian opera singer, a bespectacled councilman and a black female bank-owner, and the enemies are roughly equally divided between male and female and consist of all different races, ages (and even body types). It’s truly commendable how much these games improved on that front.
Level Breakdown:
DotO has 5 levels, and like always they are divided in 3 categories: city, combination, and single location levels. The Dreadful Whale makes a return as well, but it’s a more limited space than what it was in the previous game.
And with that, it’s time to go over the levels. Join me next time, when we discuss levels 1 - 3 and some of the more interesting story beats.

Hints
Free Christmas Cracker
Go North Of Lumbridge and Pay 10 gp to get to Al Kharid. Go to where all the warriors are and search every single crate until there will be a note inside one. It will have a number 7 and a picture of a Christmas cracker. Put it in the bank and it will turn into a Christmas cracker!
3k Gold In Seconds
Here is the fastest way to make 13k gold if you are not a member! Go to the southeast mine in Vorrock to mine clay, yes clay. Clay sells for 100+ at the GE. So just 28 is over 2. 8k. If you get 500 clay you will have 50k gold.
Free Money
The last hint I posted, “Free Food”, is where this takes place too! What you do is get a white apron, which you can find in the nearby fishing shop, go to Wydin’s store, go in the back, and in the crates right of the crate with the banana, there’ll be raw chickens. If you get full inventory of them and sell them to Wydin, you’ll have about 3 or 4 or even 5K!
Easy Prayer Level Rising
Go to level 12 wild to the Chaos Temple. It should have a few skeletons, a prayer alter, and lots of bones. Pick up the bones, and bury them. They keep pooping back up after a few minutes, so they are basically unlimited. Repeat for easy prayer level rising.
Money Maker- Required: Smithing Level 30
Mine or buy a bunch of coal and iron ore, smith it all into steel, then sell all the steel for 600gp each! Quick cash.
Gaining Magic Xp Without Gaining Hp Xp
Get yourself enough: Mind, Chaos, or Death runes (depending on your level and how much money you have). Then decide which attack you are going to use: Water, Earth, or Fire. (Air staff helps out (infinite air runes)). Go South of Falador towards the Elemental Wizards: Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. Now depending on you attack plan, attack the wizard that matches your attack. Air – Air, Water – Water, Fire – Fire, Earth – Earth. You will get the mage xp, but not the Hp xp. The wizards do hit fairly high with their attacks and cast weakening spells every couple minutes, so bring food along.
Quick Xp (members Only)
After finishing the recommended quests and achievement diary tasks for the Rellekka (fremennik area) you will get a chance to do Blood Runs Deep. Once you have obtained Balmung you do not have to finish the quest if you do not wish to. So now that you have Balmung, get yourself 25 shark, or a full bag: 28 and head to the Light house where the level 74 and 92 Dagannoths are. You will be in a Multi-Combat area, and constantly under attack. (every once in a while you will have to climp up the iron ladder, and back down so they will go back to constant attack). You will also get Herb seed drops, collect all except Irit for Irit is worth much. Charms are also dropped along with level 2 scrolls (mediums) and random raw fish.
Easy Money
To make alot of money and raise some stats, start at Lumby and head north (an empty inventory would be an advantage) Kill cows at the big field and collect thier hides. Thier hides sell for about 275gp a piece and they usually sell automaticly.
Mining/Smithing/Mage (temporarily Raised)
Non-members (F2P) you can temporarily raise your: Smithing/Mining and Magic. Dwarven Stout: Temporarily raises your Smithing and Mining by 1 level. (Example 53/50) but as I said Temporary so it lasts for about 30 seconds at the most. Wizard’s Mind Bomb: Temporarily raises your Magic by 3 levels. Another example my Mage (magic) (Example 45/42) but still lasts for about 30seconds. Bad thing about doing this it decreases your Attack (Att/Atk), Strength (Str), and Defence (Def). But that is also temporary. And you cannot take more than one to increase it more. ONLY ONE AT A TIME. Members (P2P) Same thing but theirs is a bit higher but lasts about the same amount of time. Dwarven Stout (m): increases by 2 (Example 62/60). They also have more forms of Dwarven stout (m) to choose from as well. Mind Bomb (1) or (m1): increases by Magic 2 – 3 levels (It’s random). (Example depends on the outcome of the drink so (42/40 or 43/40). Again the bad thing about doing this it decreases your Attack (Att/Atk), Strength (Str), and Defence (Def). But that is also temporary. And you cannot take more than one to increase it more. ONLY ONE AT A TIME.
Money Making
Hi some great ways of making money are as follows: (stars* are mems only) 1:swamptar pick it up in the lumbridge swamp. Takes a while but around 70 is about 35k on ge lowest. Not sure if its mems though. (sorry about that) 2:*swamp lizards:You can catch them with the hunter skill. (40+hunter recommended) for fast money each sells for about 2k on the ge. 3:*magic trees high woodcutting strongly reccomended. Most preferably chopped down near seer’s village. Full inventory sells for about65k. 4:*sharks. Best place is in fishing guild. (shark catching gloves recommended but not needed. ) they are pretty good money at around 90 fishing.
Fast Cooking XP
You will need to be a member for this, you will also need Cooking Guantlets so you do not burn any fish. At level 93 you can cook Rocktails, but sadly you will burn about half of the Rocktails. You’ll need 3,329 rocktails till level 94. After reaching level 94 you MUST wear cooking guantlets, for if you do not, you WILL burn the rocktails. From levels 94-99 cooking you will need to cook 22, 622 Rocktails. Yes I know it is Expensive, but you will reach 99 faster, and you will not burn any unlike: Monkfish and Sharks.
1K-2k In 30 Min.
Go to one of the mining sites south of varrock mine iron and fill up ur inventory take it to the Ge (grand exchange) and sell it all at highest price you will make 2K in under half an hour 1mil in 5 hours.
Fast Money (free And Members)
(recommended for players lvl 29 and up). First, buy a brass key at the Grand Exchange. Then go south until you just get out of the grand exchange. Then go west and down a little bit. You will see a little house with an arrow in it. Go into that building and down the ladder. Then go to your south and defeat a lot of hill giants and take the big bones that they drop. A full inventory sells from about 9000-11000gp do this a couple of times and you too can become rich!
The 9k Extra Earner
To get 9k and more at a time, follow my hint. To get 9k and more, first off, you need 20k or more. Then, if you are a member, buy 3 and more game necklaces. Keep transporting to the Clan Wars and buy as many TEAM-23 CAPES as you can. Go teleport to Barbarian Outpost. Keep doing this, then on your last try to Barby Outpost, Home teleport or something else to Lumbridge OR Varrock. Sell you capes and this will get you 15k more. The other kind of Team Cape thing, for free Runescape players, go to Edgeville. This requires no teleportation of any sort. Go to the guy who sell capes get a full Intivory, and go to Bank and store. Repeat this, and you will have another 9k in no time. AGAIN, THE 23 CAPES + 26 CAPES ARE BLUE!
Easy Slayer And Attack/defense/strength
This is for MEMBERS ONLY. Go to one of the slayermasters (Turael in Burthrope, Mazchana in Canthis, Vannaka in Edgeville dungeon, Chaeldar, whichrequires completion of lost city, Sumona inPollinava, or Duradel in Shilo Village) and theperson will tell you to kill a certain number ofnpc, like whitewolfs, banshees, bears, dogs, ghosts, ect. , and set theattack method of your choice and then and save upfor 400 points and you can buy 10k xp.
Free Food
If you need food and you have a white apron, you’re in luck. Put the apron on and go to Port Sarim. Go in the food shop (the bread icon on the mini-map), and ask Wydin about the job. Go through the back and you’ll find potatoes, raw chickens, an apron (outside the crate), and bananas (after Pirate’s Treasure)in the crates. TIP:If you slice bananas with a banana, you turn it into sliced bananas, which heal more.
Best Way To Make Money (mem Only)
One of the best ways to make money requires lv 75 wc, 85 fletch, and 55 mage. It also requires good axe, staff of fire, lots of nature runes, and knife. Find a mage tree in a desolate (nobody else around) place cut mage logs, fletch into longbow(u) and high alc it. You get more money from high alcing bows than the nats cost.
Gertrude’s Cat Quest
This can only be done by members. Go to Gertrude and ask her what is wrong. She will tell you that she wants her cat back. Go to the northeast of the wilderness and you will be brought to the broken fence yard. Jump over the fence and go up the ladder. You will find Fluffy (the cat) and try to pick her up. She will swipe you and take your life down. Go back and get a raw fish and a bucket. Go to Lumbridge and go to the cows. Milk the cow and go back to the fence. Give her both and you will think that she is lonely. Go down the ladder and will see “Meew!” coming out of the boxes. Look inside one of them and you will find a kitten. Go up the ladder and give the kitten to Fluffy. Fluffy should go back to Gertrude and you will be rewarded with a kitten.
Black Knights Fortress Quest
Start by talking to Sir Amik Varze in the White Knights castle in Falador. Get an Iron Cahin and Bronze Helm to get into the fortress. Go to the Black Knights fortress north of Falador. Search for a grill once inside. It will look like an air vent. Select “Listen” on the grill and hear the top secret plan. Then, get a cabbage from the monastery just beside the fortress. Then, go back to the fortress and drop the cabbage in a hole that is above the cauldron. You will have to go in the room with all the Black Knights on the first floor and go up the ladder to find the hole. After you have ruined the plan, go back to see Sir Amik Varze. The quest will then be completed.
Survive In “Lava Chambers”
Get to the point where you are able to fight Lesser Demons or level 54 Skeletons or Red Spiders. After defeating the Dragon, or at least using the secret door the first time from the Crandor side, get enough Fishing and Cooking to be able to catch and cook Lobster. Bring a Lobster Pot, a Tinderbox and a Hatchet (any type). Reach the island from Karamja (through the secret door). Fight your monsters, etc. When you run out of food, return through the secret door to Karamja and fish for Lobsters. Then, cut a tree for logs, set it on fire, and cook your Lobsters. This allows you to survive in the Lava Chambers under Crandor/Karamja Islands almost indefinitely. This is useful for leveling up against certain monsters and to also get a lot of one kind of item from a particular monster (such as Rune Mediums from Lesser Demons).
Easier Survival
To survive anywhere, bring a sleeping bag and when you get low on health, sleep in it. It will heal while you are sleeping and you cannot be attacked during that time.
Good Player Killing
Get your attack up to 40 so that you can hold Rune and get your defense up to 10. Next, get your strength as high as possible. You should be able to hit somewhere between 20 and 27.
Mine Faster
To get the ore immediately, as soon as you are about to hit the ore, click it again. To mine minerals faster, click on the rock you wish to mine then count how many times he hits the rock. After he hits the rock three times (in between three and four), click again on the rock you want to mine. If done correctly, he should start over twice, then you will instantly have the ore in your inventory.
Hidden Mine By Varrok
On the road to Varrok (the way to Stonehenge), you will notice a little opening on the wooden gates when you reach the entrance. Instead of going inside Varrok, go through the opening on the left gate (from behind you) and keep walking. There will be a mine that not many people use. The mine contains Iron, Silver, Tin, Copper, and Clay.
Hidden Mining Pit
When you get skilled enough to mine Coal and Admanite, and do not feel like tangling with scorpions to get it, there is a perfectly safe mining field just outside of Lumbridge. Go to Lumbridge Swamp and move east. You will soon find an ocean. Keep close and go south. You will find the secret mining pit soon.
Cooks Guild
To get into the Cooks guild, you will need a Chef’s Hat and level 32 cooking. To get a Chef’s Hat, kill goblins until you get one . To get your cooking to level 32, cook meat until you reach that level. Then, wear your Chef’s Hat and travel northwest from Varrok to find the Cook’s guild, or just look on the Runescape map.
Strong Attacks
Get a full body of armor and use your defensive attack. The attack will do at least 5 damage. The enemy will most likely drop nothing.
Skull
Use the following trick to get a Skull without fighting a Skeleton. Simply get the Skull before you start the Restless Ghost mission. The Skull can be found in the dungeon of the Wizard Tower. After you get the Skull, talk to the Priest to start the quest. Then you will not have to fight the skeleton.
Rune Rock
Go north from Falador and go past the mine. Keep going north until you find lava. Go left to the end of the lava, then go north past the Lesser Demons. After that, go right. You can only find it in wilderness at level 45. You will find the rune rocks, with Red Spiders guarding it. The rock probably will have been mined already.
Liquid Armor
If you are a member, go to the impassable mountain range. Get into the fort first to get through, then keep moving. If desired, you can fight the level 110 Dragons. Keep moving and you will find Liquid Armor, which is stronger than Dragonite Armor (must have level 200 attack defense strength).
Bronze Dagger
Go to Lumbridge Castle. When inside, turn to your left and go down the hall past the cooking place. In the last room, go up the ladder then find the room with the Duke Of Lumbridge. Enter that room and go to the table at the end of it. If you wait long enough, a bronze dagger will appear.
Blue Rune Rock
They are in wild about level 42. Go to the west side and north all way. Go east slightly to find red spiders guarding the only blue Rune Rock in the game. Additionally, the Blue Rune rock requires level 85 mining. Also, to make a rune item, the least smithing experience you need is level 85. Also, mining Runite on a busy server is not recommended, as people might be waiting there to kill anyone who attempts to mine it.
Pirate Treasure Quest
Use the following steps to get a gold ring, cut emerald, and some gold. Go to Port Sarim and talk to a pirate in front of a bar. Then, go to the clothes store in Varrok and buy an apron. Next, go to the island with the banana plantation. Ask for a job on the plantation. Get a bottle of rum. Put the rum in the crate and fill the crate with bananas. Return to Port Sarim and go to the food store. Put on the apron. Go through the door with the apron on the ground. The shop keeper will say that you cannot go back there. Ask him for a job. Search the crate and you will get the rum. Go to the bar. Give the rum to the pirate. He will give you a key. Go to the Blue Moon Inn. Open the chest upstairs. Go to the park in Faldor with a spade. Dig behind the south bench. Make sure you are in the soil. Additionally, to dig behind the soil behind the south bench in Falador Park, you must kill Wyson The Gardener.
Recommended Quests
Do the Lost Ghost quest at the graveyard. If you finish this, you will get about 5 or 6 prayer points. Additionally, do the quest in Falador. Talk to the man in the second floor of the castle for a quest about black knights. Get the Iron Chain Mail found behind Falador Castle. Buy it for about 120 GP. A bronze helmet can be found anywhere. Get some cabbage and go to the black knight castle. Push on walls that are called “Odd walls” and drop the cabbage in a hole to complete the quest. The reward is 2,000 GP.
Recommended Monsters To Kill
Go to Lumbridge where the chickens are located and kill lots of them. Collect their feathers for fly fishing, bury their bones for prayer levels, and cook their meat to get your cooking levels up. Additionally, cows are another good thing to kill. Bury their bones for prayer; keep the cow hide for crafting, and meat for cooking. Also, fight Black Knights. They drop quite good items and bones to bury. They also drop steel bars for smithing.
Rune Two-Hander
Get your mining to about level 35. Mine until you get 750 iron ore. Then, go to Draynor Manor to the location where the three men exchange fish, ore, and bars. Get all the ore into certificates at the man who exchanges certificates for ore. You should have 150 certificates. Go to World 1, where most of the high level characters are. Go beside the Varrock Castle. You will be able to trade your 150 iron ore certificates for a Rune Two-Hander.
No Magic Experience
There is a way to complete tutorial island with no magic experience. When you get to the magic part of tutorial, drop all the runes the wizard gives you. Talk to him again when the runes are dropped and you will be able to continue with tutorial without magic experience.
Ernest The Chicken Switches
When you go into the place with the switches, pull them in this order: A, B, D, A, B, F, E, C.
Silverlight
Go to Varrock and talk to the gypsy. She will explain the quest. To undrain the key in the pipe, which is part of the quest, use a bucket of water over the drain and head for the sewer.
Raising Cooking
In the tutorial, after burning the meat and getting another, keep dropping and talking repeatedly until you have enough Cooking.
Raising Ranging
In the northwest part of Varrock Castle is a door that looks strange. Stand in the doorway and close the door. Wait for a guard or warrior and attack it with your bow or crossbow. The guard will not be able to attack you because you are in the door.
Easy Mining Skill
An easy way to get good mining skills is to go to the mining field by the place where the Champions Guild is located. Mine some ore, then go back to where you start after the tutorial. There is a furnace there. Melt it and return to the city to the smithy. Very soon, you will be able to mine more things then enter the dwarves mines and join the miners guild.
Easy Items
Start a new character and only increase his strength. After he has a lot of strength, make him a member then go to Lumbridge and duel. When you get into a duel, select no weapons, magic, prayer, and retreating. You will only battle with hands and nothing else. Make sure you have full iron on and Amulet of Strength.
Raise Ranging And Magic
Use Bronze Arrows or Mind Runes and Air Runes, which make Air Strike, to attack the people that are in jail in Port Sarim or the Wizards Tower at the top where the lesser demon is level 75 and locked up next to the level 43 mage. The mage will attack you if you attack the lesser demon. Get Bark to make Bark Armor at the Magic Castle. This can cost more than 60,000 gp.
Air Runes
To get easy Air Runes, go to Karamja. Go behind Luthas’s house. You will see three Air Runes there. Since they respawn fast, stay there and in thirty minutes you will have over 200.
Adamantite And Mithril Ores
Go to Lumbridge, then go to the back of the castle. You should eventually find a gate. Go around the gate, and at the far west just before the river, you should see a building. Just south of the building should be some mining rocks. Prospect the rocks until you see the rock that you are looking for (either Adamantite or Mithril). There are many other rocks there.
Black Hatchets, Mediums, Maces And Kites
Use the following trick to get Black Hatchets, Mediums, Maces, and Kites. If you want to get the Hatchets, Mediums, and Maces, go straight up from Edgeville to level 15 wilderness. There will be a castle here. Walk in and kill level 21 Dark Warriors until they drop these items. For Black Kites; go all the way west to the wilderness until you reach to a big open ocean. Go straight north until you see the level 60+ Ice Giants. Kill them to get Black Kites.
Imp Catcher Quest
Start this quest by talking to Mizgog Wizard on the top floor of the Wizard Tower (located directly south of Draynor Village). Get 60 coins and go to Karmaja Island. This will cost 30 coins. At Karmaja, go to the top of the volcano where there are many Imps. Kill Imps untill you get one red bead, one black bead, one yellow bead, and one white bead that they will drop. Take the four beads back to Mizgog Wizard and the quest will be complete. Your prize will be one quest point and the Amulet Of Accuracy (raises all equipment stats by 4).
Get Money Fast
Get Limpwurt Roots(Hobgoblins, Hill Giants, etc.), and sell them around 400-500 gp each. Then get Big Bones from Hill Giants, Moss Giants, Ice Giants, etc. and sell the Big Bones from around 300-400 gp each. Get Vials and sell them to members.
Unlimited Cat Training Medals
OK, this is for members only. When you have done the quest “Gertrude’s Cat” you will recive a cat. After that cat has made 100 rat kills you will recive a cat training medal. Drop it then get another one and drop it then keep on doing this so you will have a lot of cat training medals. You can sell them for a lot of money (about 5-10k)!

Enter the house and talk to a man named Luthas. He will ask you to pick bananas. Answer “Yes”, pick bananas, put them in thecrate, then talk to Luthas to collect your moderately earned 30 GP. If you wouldlike more money in multiples of 30, ask him to get another 30 GP for doing the jobagain. Stay here for a long time if you need to spend several thousand on items.Go to Port Sarim and do the banana thing and put a bottle of rum in the crate thengo in and collect your GP. Then go back outside and to Port Sarim get a whiteapron and go get a job in the grocery store at Sarim. Search the crate in the backand take the rum and some bananas.
