had one of those I guess I'm in the right field experiences this morning:
as I was experiencing an extremely surreal dream possibly tangentially related to the TV show deadloch? some of the surreal imagery went from surreal photoreal imagery to surreal stained glass imagery, and the first thought I had was that's a pretty good solution to blending a cartoon and a photographic style - nice choice.
I'm not even working right now, I've been off work for 2 weeks with this arm thing. this is simply my destiny I guess.

a formal plea for everybody to watch deadloch
Tumblr media
deadloch is an australian black-comedy/murder mystery with a majority lesbian cast. it's a feminist subversion of the detective crime fiction genre, and is funny, well-written, and character-driven by complex interesting women. it's a feminist subversion on the crime genre without feeling preachy and touches on topics of decolonization with its aboriginal characters throughout the show.
if you're someone who is often asking for media centered on wlw characters that aren't in high school, have a plot not focused on their sexuality or coming out, and allow their characters to be flawed girlfails then deadloch is a really good show to pick up!
most of the show is focused on the main characters, dulcie and eddie, who are strangers unwillingly forced to work together to find a murderer. they're a classic buddy cop duo with clashing personalities and a full head height difference who evolve throughout the show to form a genuine work partnership.
it's really good and it's only 8 episodes long and on amazon prime! even without the humor it still makes a really solid murder mystery, and as a show it's very pretty and has a great soundtrack and is also literally lesbian broadchurch and a pinnacle example of girl yaoi. also if you're into ofmd madeleine sami, who's gonna be in s2 of ofmd, is one of the protagonists!

Hey lovelies. Love Notes are brief tonight. I just wanted to remind you that kindness is one of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself and anyone else. It's not free, but it costs a lot less than most things. No matter how hard things have been, no matter how much kindness you've received, kindness continues to be one of the greatest world-changers and you're still trying to be kind, and I am so proud of you for that. We were thinking that we should introduce a spoiler free way for people who are starting to watch season 2 on the BBC to interact with the campaign on Twitter. One other thing that’s coming up later in February is that Chxrlotte on our UK crew will be releasing an Our Flag Means Death inspired track on her label on 24 February! I've been working on a bit of a side project of putting together an OFMD Renewal Repository for resources that doesn't require anyone to log into ... twitter, IG, tumblr, facebook, etc. It's still WIP but I'd love some constructive feedback if anyone would be willing to take a look and let me know what they think. I won't be replacing the tumblr recaps with it, but will be posting them there minus the gifs at the end so they can be shared to other platforms if needed.
My specific questions are:
Are there more categories / different information you'd like to have added?
Is it generally easy to find information?
Is this a bad idea? (too many places with this stuff already?)
Other feedback welcome!
I am totally cool with constructive feedback, feel free to dm me :)

Hey lovelies. Do you ever worry you're too much? Like you talk too much, or feel too much, or come off too strong? I know I do some days.
Just remember, on days you're feeling too much, you're probably shining your brightest. What other people think is too much is just you, and you're allowed to shine! Don't ever let their inability to see your worth stop you. Saw this on IG today and thought of you call. Gnight crew, all the love <3

I watched the final episode of Deadloch last night and OMG it was so goooooooooood but also so unsettling that I literally couldn’t go to sleep afterwards, & I’m dying to talk about it but it’s impossible to discuss without spoiling the fun for anyone who hasn’t watched it.
Let’s put it this way: murder mysteries are fun because they’re neat puzzles, but the really great ones are those where you look at the characters and think to yourself “hey, I know this person”. In Deadloch, every character was a person I’d met before, gone to work with, gone to parties with, been friends with, slept with. Including the villain. And god damn, the sinking feeling of realizing that someone I know isn’t who I thought they were felt so real.

Deadloch anon here. Just finished watching the first season and wow!!! Honestly thing a lot of tumblr should watch it because it shows how abusive people can co-opt things like feminism and social justice to justify their actions because “I’m an ally!”
Right!! Like Deadloch is a great show on its own merits - it's funny, it's a really engaging mystery that kept me guessing the whole time, and all of the characters are very distinct and well-rounded.
But it also does a really great job of talking about sexism, racism, queerphobia, abuse, and colonialism without getting preachy or distracting. And like you said it really delves into how people can co-opt social justice language in multiple ways - Margaret being the pinnacle of "women need to support women!" while being a self-serving racist, Cath trying to be supportive but actually making everything about herself, and of course (spoilers redacted).
But also it's absolutely filled with lesbians and it has the gross, feral female character who's allowed to be gross and explicit and uncouth that tumblr is always clamoring for. LITERALLY why isn't this the biggest show on this website

On the recommendation of two friends, I recently watched Deadloch, and it was incredible! Super funny, but the mystery is really compelling too. It both subverts and satirises crime drama tropes and archetypes as well as being a pointed social commentary. Oh, it's also incredibly feminist and critiques toxic masculinity and the patriarchy through that lens. Plus it’s a great buddy cop show! It works on a lot of levels in a way satire or spoofs can sometimes not work
Tumblr media
Anyway, you've got the loose cannon renegade detective played pitch perfectly by Madeleine Sami (a lot of comments I saw elsewhere found her hard to bear at first, but she does mellow, and her being OTT was part of the point), the strait-laced (but not straight) local sergeant again played to perfection by Kate Box, and a whole host of wacky and often irritating (but never boring) characters, who, as I said, both play into archetypes of crime dramas but also real life stereotypes.
Tumblr media
It's hard to go into more of what I loved about it as a whole without giving away the reveals, so I'll just say I think it was all superbly done. It's a really well crafted show! Hopefully my gushing isn't too effusive but it's rare these days for me to get this sucked in and not be disappointed. It's also set up perfectly for a second so fingers crossed
Tumblr media
And for anyone looking for crime dramas with more queer characters, most of the women in the town are lesbians, and the main male cop is gay
(Sorry if any of this doesn’t make sense! It’s super hot today and I’m tired and meant to write this weeks ago haha)

I just finished watching Deadloch and it was so good!!!!! I liked how comedic it was without the comedy overshadowing the plot and stuff. (very mild spoilers) i'm happy that they hugged at the end because imo the characters in the shows I watch don't hug enough. also they did an awesome job at making me really mad at the misogynistic/racist characters. anyways, great show, definetly worth the fact that i just stayed up until 3am to finish. i reallyyyy hope season two gets confirmed because it was a really intrigueing setup for season two.

Best of 2023 - TV Series
I think I watched over 50 TV shows this year and most of them were great which means, the making of this list was hard and took me a few days and I'm still not sure about the order.
01. Deadloch - Season 1. - "Welcome to the Tasmanian town of Deadloch! It’s the site of a simmering culture war between the blue-collar, old-school residents and a recent influx of lesbians who’ve put the place on the map, bringing performance art and gourmet nose-to-tail dining with them." - Vanity Fair
Tumblr media
02. The Woman In The Wall - Miniseries - "People think that this couldn't happen again. Then they forget that the last laundry closed in 1996. It wasn't medieval times. The f**king 'Macarena' was in the charts." - Philippa Dunne
03. Nolly - Miniseries - "This show follows Nolly through the very public sacking and its fallout, and paints a sympathetic and adoring picture of the woman behind the headlines. Bonham Carter sails through this as if on the campest of clouds, but also beautifully articulates the grief behind the glamour. Nolly is part of the old guard, the oldest of guards in fact – she was the first woman ever to appear on colour television. " - The Guardian
04. The Newsreader - Season 2.
05. Heartstopper - Season 2.
06. Mood - Miniseries - "Like Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag and Michaela Coel’s Chewing Gum, Lecky’s Mood started life as a one-woman show on the London stage; she debuted Superhoe at the Royal Court in 2019, with the Standard describing her performance as “a revelation”. That’s probably where those comparisons should end, though, as Mood is a very different beast, and not just because of the aforementioned musical interludes. The darkness in this story isn’t necessarily mined for laughs (though our deadpan lead Sasha can be savagely funny, just like some of her brutal song lyrics) and there’s a real sense of precariousness at its heart." - Evening Standard
07. Workin' Moms - Season 7.
Tumblr media
08. Blue Lights - Season 1.
09. The White Lotus - Season 1. and 2.
10. Ted Lasso - Season 3.
11. Starstruck - Season 3.
12. The Following Events Are Based on a Pack of Lies - Season 1. - "The show touches on some serious themes around abuse, misogyny and gaslighting, but it is so compelling because it doesn’t forget how much fun there is in the art of the con." - The Guardian
13. The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart - Miniseries
14. The Night Agent - Season 1.
15. The Dry - Season 1.
16. Foundation - Season 1. and 2.
17. The Change - Season 1. - "Bridget Christie writes and stars in The Change – her sitcom debut – as Linda, a much put-upon wife, mother and retail worker who reaches a crisis point at her 50th birthday party. It’s not just the menopause. It’s also the cluelessness of her husband (Omid Djalili), the open disdain of her teenage children and society’s general denial of the full humanity of older women that pushes Linda over the edge." - The Guardian
18. Sex Education - Season 4.
19. Fleishman is in Trouble - Miniseries
Tumblr media
20. Slow Horses - Season 1. and 2.
21. The Last of Us - Season 1.
22. The Fall of the House of Usher - Miniseries
23. Fisk - Season 1. and 2. - "You can tell Fisk is an old-fashioned sitcom just by looking at it. That goes beyond Fisk’s awesome brown pants suit; the visuals here are firmly in service to the story (and to the jokes) rather than feeling like a cinematographer’s audition reel. The locations are basic – an office, a café, Fisk’s temporary Air B&B home – and filmed in a straightforward way that never detracts from the comedy. For audiences used to expensive production values and flashy locations this may take a little getting used to, but the effort is most definitely worth it." - ScreenHub
24. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel - Season 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
25. The Diplomat - Season 1.
26. Gen V - Season 1.
27. Secret City - Season 1. and 2.
28. Severance - Season 1.
29. Wolf - Miniseries
30. The Crown - Season 5.
31. Shrinking - Season 1.
32. Three Pines - Miniseries
33. Beef - Miniseries
Tumblr media
34. The Sixth Commandment - Miniseries - "Evil characters can be just as one-note and boring as the good, but Hardwicke manages to infuse Ben with such a disconcerting blend of calculation, charm and quiet, almost hidden glee in the harm he inflicts that it is impossible to look away. You will want to. It is harrowing." - The Guardian
35. Swarm - Miniseries
36. Bodies - Miniseries
37. The Long Shadow - Miniseries
38. Wellmania - Miniseries
39. Boat Story - Miniseries
40. The Morning Show - Season 3.

Hello, hope this is ok. Just to say how much I have enjoyed your writing for Bodies. Your writing is so beautifully detailed, and the internal nuances are delightful to wander amongst. I have read all TRC books, not my favourite, but I really like your fics, but Oh boy, I can see how your writing has developed since then. So, just a big thank you for writing all these pieces. (Do you have any recs for queer media that you have enjoyed?)
Thank you so much for messaging! It's really lovely of you to say!
Also very glad to hear my writing has come on since the TRC days! I was very proud of those fics at the time, and really do still think of them fondly, but I am aware of how much I've grown as a writer since then (hence the slight jumpscare this morning, for which I can only apologise!).
Queer media! Let me dredge my memories for a bit, and I will no doubt mention stuff you've heard of or watched/read already. There are doubtless SEVERAL things I've forgotten, as it is well past my bedtime, but if any glaring omissions occur to me I'll send them on! Shows: Recently I've really enjoyed Our Flag Means Death - you've probably at least heard of it (and as you've been looking at my AO3 you'll have seen I've written for it), and it's completely different from either TRC or Bodies tonally bc it is, in essence, a pirate sitcom, but there is honestly nothing so unashamedly and joyously queer out there at the moment. The fandom is a bit of a terrifying juggernaut, so I suggest treading neatly round the edges and delving into some absolutely top-tier fic (of which there is no shortage) if the whim takes you. On the other side of the pirate scale is Black Sails (DO NOT compare these directly they are very different beasts). Excellent story, very dark and gritty, great pay-off. Deadloch is another great show - Australian detective black comedy, filled to the brim with lesbians! The Haunting of Bly Manor is just a gorgeous ghost/love story with some brilliant characters. Feel Good is one of these unexpectedly heart-breaking sitcoms that I can't recommend enough even though it took me a year to build up the courage for a rewatch A League of Their Own (TV) is just brilliant, and i am GUTTED we're not getting a s2 I'm gonna stick Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries here too, bc even though it isn't actually all that queer (but it DOES have Miriam Margolyes, which definitely qualifies it), it's super camp and has what is possibly the only straight mc romance i've ever been invested in which is saying something Books: KJ Charles is a favourite of mine. She writes really great, quick-to-read queer historical romances that always have a great mystery and body count. The Will Darling Adventures (1920s pulp action-mystery with a romance between an ex-soldier who now runs a second-hand bookshop and a disgraced aristo) are my absolute favourites of hers, but everything she writes is very solid. I've also really enjoyed The Locked Tomb by Tamsyn Muir series so far - very complicated Space Opera, again chock-full of lesbians. Sex: Lessons From History by Fern Riddell is a really interesting non-fiction book about, shockingly, attitudes to sex through history, and takes a delightfully non-heteronormative approach to it that I wasn't expecting going in. As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann is an all-time favourite read of mine, but is quite challenging as the main character is Not The Greatest Guy and it does carry some hefty stuff and warnings. Girl Meets Boy and How to Be Both by Ali Smith are both just brilliant stories with some great Gender Stuff going on.
Like i say, I'm sure I've missed stuff! And it's a bit all over the place because, as well as replying to your AO3 comments too early this morning, I am now answering this too late at night. I am sorry, but can do nothing about it :P I hope this is a little bit helpful at least! <3

Get to Know Me tag
Thanks for tagging me @onedismay and @illusivesoul you tagged me in a very similar one recently while I was still covidy so here it is <3
Fave ships: (links lead to fics in case these intrigue. M and E rated fics be warned) KolFer (Kolyat x Feron) Kriortez (Thane Krios x Steve Cortez) Shrios (in particular, my Keahi Shep, they/he x Thane)
Favorite colour: Teal and Purple
Song stuck in my head: Everything smells like salmon! I always have a song in my head so this changes frequently.
Favorite food: Pasta, bolognese being number 1, and crisps, which I love roast beef or salt and vinegar flavour.
Last song listened to: Hmmm no idea. Lemme hit shuffle 3 times on my most listened to playlist: Incubus, Wish you were here.
Last tv show/movie: Hoo boy, I watch a lot because I have stuff on while I draw, and also while I had covid and couldn't do anything else. I'm currently rewatching Elementary, just finished rewatching Deadloch too(I like my repeat watchings!). I watch Taskmaster with @shadowthehedgehog1 as they come out and am giving Attack on Titan a go with my spouse. It's a bit overly angsty/dramatic for my taste in places but I reckon i'll stick with it. Oh and I finished Scavengers Reign a few days ago too, top notch sci fi! Movie wise the last one I watched was Dungeons and Dragons Honour among thieves and I loved it.
Spicy/sweet/savory?: Savoury, but I'm a big foodie and love sweet and spicy too. Franks Red hot my beloved.
Currently reading: Focusing on reading physical books drains my spoons unfortunately. I am snail crawling my way through 'who hunts the whale' by Laura Kate Dale and Jane Earith Magnet. It's great! It'll just take me forever.
Last thing I googled: Is there a way to do oil paint glazing glaze technique in procreate digital painting (short answer: no! Or at least no one has written a tutorial about that specifically so I'll have to just keep doing my own chaotic thing. Anyway I ended up down an oil painting rabbithole and am now drawing fruit with a new brush pack instead of the piece I was actually trying to draw lmao)
Tagging: @requiemforarainbow @gay-nidoking @manicdepressivedaisy @n7viper @princessbutts69 @champagne-pain @voidfromouterspace @hornetofhallownest @dandenbo @otemporanerys @shadowthehedgehog1 some of these may be side blogs where I should have tagged main blogs/vice versa my bad!

Do you have any new-ish (within the last 5 years) WLW shows or movies to recommend?
new this year: deadloch (amazon) is an australian scandi crime parody-esque? (there is literally no word for whatever this show is, just feel the vibes). main character is a lesbian with a wife in a small tasmanian town filled with lesbians.
new last year: yellowjackets (paramount+) is a 90s/current parallel story about a high school girls soccer team whose plane crashes in the wilderness and the aftermath that lingers in the survivors' adulthood. there are at least 2 lesbians, though whatever is going on with a few of the others is, uh, pretty gay also. fair warning: lots of death, also cannibalism, and also death by cannibalism. i started watching this show by accident because all the gore was thoroughly hidden behind filtered tags. season 1 is great, season 2 is good-ish.
a league of their own (amazon) is a remake of the movie, but explicitly very very very very queer. it got cancelled after the first season, then renewed for a half baked number of episodes to end it, and now it's stuck in strike limbo.
new two years ago: vigil (bbc, i think it's on peacock in the us) is a uk crime thriller about a murder on a submarine. the main character is a detective who gets sent to investigate the murder, her partner is also her girlfriend. season 2 is about to air in the uk. the main character is also played by suranne jones, who is also in gentleman jack.
new four years ago: gentleman jack (bbc, hbo i think) is a period piece about anne lister, the first modern lesbian in recorded history (a redundant phrase, but i once said she was the first lesbian in history and someone got mad at me) and her wife. fair warning: they have hair styles that make this almost impossible to watch, and it got cancelled after two seasons.
dickinson (apple tv) is another period piece about emily dickinson. she was very much a lesbian.

I keep reading about shows getting canceled prematurely, and one thing they all have in common is that I’ve never heard of them. So, this is me yelling about Deadloch, so you’ll hear about it and go watch it! Deadloch is an Australian small town detective show, that is also a comedy. And it is really good on both counts - gripping mystery, and hilarious social commentary. The lead actors are both fantastic, and the ensemble is also great. Next week is the finale, so get in on it while you can!
