FINALLY found the time to finish my memorial illustration for Dell Aldrich over the holidays. For those who might not know, she voiced the Narrator and Grandmother Raven in Wizard101, but sadly passed away in October of 2022. I really wanted this piece to capture those two roles, and how the nature of her voice helped portray this whimsical nature that makes Wizard101 so unique. 

I haven’t done a completely rendered illustration with multiple characters and a background in... years lol. But I'm actually really happy with how this turned out, despite how long it looks me to complete :’D I hope you all enjoy.

my minotaur boy!! pls click on the photos for higher res! my thesis is focusing on trans men and creatures (how original ik) and this was last semester's final. i spent a lot of time looking at sculptures of the theseus/minotaur story, and yknow? a LOT of them are erotic! i'm pretty sure i saw some of them on tumblr a decade ago, and that's led to this now!

as you'll notice, the minotaur has a big t-dick! i wanted to give him breasts and an enlarged clitoris to present a very masculine trans figure. the boy on the bottom is also trans because i say so . the piece is about looking up to older, bigger, hairier trans men and seeing something awe-inspiring and beautiful. the minotaur was locked up by a cruel father for being different, and i think modern adaptations tend towards a sympathetic asterion (his name in one version)

making this piece was. so much effort. it took me about 3 months to get it all together - from clay model (plasticine) to 3D print to silicone mold to wax cast, and finally bronze pour into the shell mold. and then a TON of filing, sanding, dremel-ing, and various other metalworking techniques that probably took years off my life.

i started with sketches and made theeeeeee ugliest model ever:

then used a 3D scanner to get it digital, then spent a goooood month or two making him pretty in blender! then i spent an agonizing few weeks trying to get it print-ready, and fiiiiiinally did

^^^ an early resin printed draft of the model - you can see in the final that i added lots to theseus after some feedback, but sadly the nosering broke off every time i cast it so i just. let that be <3

then came the moldmaking, and then the wax dipping!! the yellow stuff is shell mold (ground up ceramic bits and algae soup, sticks to the wax, then silica sand in varying sizes on top) which gets the wax melted out, and bronze poured in!

then it's all metalworking, cutting stuff off, and working with hot metal. they don't tell you about all the bronze dust and how annoying it gets wearing a respirator AND goggles. but it is for me health, me boy. here's him all cleaned up before the patina:

and then i spray him down with various chemicals to make it "patina" (aka rust) in pretty colors. wait a few days, then apply paste wax to seal it and give it that shine!

then we get what you see above!!! the blue was actually unintentional, and i'm still not super sure why it looks that way.. but it's pretty so idc <3

Witch Queen gave me Destiny 2 brainrot and also I recycled Relay and Striker into Guardians bc I missed them so here’s a paint-over I did u_u

Anyways Striker, Sampson, and Relay are all the prototypes that preceded full-body Exos (they call themselves Proto-Exos or “Protos” for short.) Striker and Sampson woke up on Europa in Bray Exoscience the day of Twilight motherfucking Gap so they had to ruck it to Eventide to find a ship bc help wasn’t coming and comms were down. They found Relay on Mars like. 30ish years later. Bc people age slowly in the Destiny universe lol.

Also Striker’s science BFF’s with Asher Mir (because of COURSE he is) and him and Sampson are a lot nicer in this au bc they doesn’t have the horrifying trauma of watching entire planets get glassed during the Human-Covenant War and then end up being forced to commit genocide at gunpoint like they do in canon :’D

I might make some more doodles with them and I’ll tag em as D2!AU or something similar so ppl don’t get confused.

since coming back to tumblr i’ve noticed that a lot of people here seem to be pretty unaware of all of the connections that exist between the bands people are fans of, so i thought i’d create an updated flowchart to make everything more apparent! click to see it in hq! there’s an older one here that i based the idea off of, but it’s tiny and REALLY outdated (like... says that pete wentz is dating ashlee simpson outdated), and missing a lot of connections. so i thought i’d update it for 2020. if you’re interested in seeing my sources, you can click here, and if you want to know more about how i picked the bands i included, you can read more below! otherwise, just enjoy, and feel free to shoot me an ask or a dm asking about this stuff; i think it’s super interesting :~)

so the thing about bandom that’s probably pretty obvious from this flowchart is that it’s all ridiculously incestuous. connections exist between bands you would never think of, thanks to sharing a label (like the fbr/decaydance family), being from the same place (mcr/midtown/thursday), etc. if you’ll check out the old chart, you’ll see that there are a ton of bands on there i didn’t include, and the simple reason for that is that i don’t see anyone talking about them anymore. while i love the hush sound, they unfortunately aren’t super popular and i think 90% of bandom as it exists today has no idea who they are.

there are some less popular bands on here that i did include simply because they were *so* entrenched at the time -- the cab is the primary example of this. though they’re not huge now, they collaborated or toured with a huge amount of other bands.

additionally, there are some things that i needed to leave off for the sake of... my sanity, lmao. for example, a ton of these bands were on warped tours together (i.e. cobra, tai, and gch in 2008; mcr, thursday, the used in 2004), but i didn’t include those -- i only included mcr and fob co-headlining warped 2005 because that connection is arguably one of the most important in the scene.

FINALLY, i don’t claim that this is comprehensive by any means! i’m sure there are tours that i missed on here that had the same bands on them, but i think i got most everything.

i hope it’s helpful and that you learned something! it was really fun to put this together, and i encourage you to do some googling if you’re interested in learning more about any of these bands, tours, or collabs as a whole!

A first look at RPG: turns out it's not only Role-Playing Games

Many of you have heard about one of the oldest programming languages, COBOL, and you have also heard that COBOL programmers are much asked for nowadays to maintain old legacy code. There's another old-timer which few know about and which is still in use and will be in use for quite a while for applications in various specific fields (i.e. finance, banking, etc.). Its name is IBM RPG.

Once upon a time...

RPG is a high-level programming language for business applications. It is an IBM proprietary programming language and its later versions are available only on IBM i- or OS/400-based systems.

RPG has been around for more than half a century. By the end of the 1950s, IBM had built a huge number of electromechanical devices called tabulating machines. The last mass-produced tabulator model was the IBM 407 Accounting Machine:

By the way, this tabulator rented from $800 to $920 per month ($8100 to $9300 per month in 2016 dollars), depending on the model. They were withdrawn from marketing on December 17, 1976.

As you know, scientific and technological progress was striding forward at the time, and the end of the 1950s saw the birth of the first transistor computers. The first IBM computer of this type was IBM 1401 built in 1959:

The Computer History Museum has one working unit. Take a look at how it all worked - that's really interesting (I especially like the phrase, "We need a little bit of cooling," at 4:41):

To facilitate ease of transition for their customers to the new transistor computers, IBM developed two tools in 1959 to replicate punched-card processing on computers: FARGO (Fourteen-o-one Automatic Report Generation Operation) and RPG (Report Program Generator). Both languages' syntax resembled that of the instruction language of electromechanical tabulators. FARGO and RPG also replicated an important feature of tabulators: cyclic processing mode (known as the program cycle), in which tabulators read punched cards, summarized their contents, and printed a result. IBM still maintains backward compatibility with the program cycle even in the latest dialect, RPG IV.

Even though RPG was developed under much influence of FARGO, it took RPG just a few years to replace its predecessor as a more superior language. The next system to receive RPG support was mainframe IBM System/360 Model 20:

A couple of years later (at the end of the 1960s), IBM released the next dialect, RPG II, for midrange computer System/3:

RPG has since evolved into an HLL equivalent to COBOL and PL/I. Its distinctive feature (in contrast to modern languages) was the so called fixed-format syntax, so programs were difficult to read without a special debugging template.
