After a while of being in the NMS fandon I have come to the conclusion that most OCs are one or a mix of these;

1, this is John, she has an empire of freighters and ships and is a badass pirate, she is also a scientist and has found ways to teleport entire fleets without using any fuel, she chills and can also spit acid

2, this is Eos, he is very nice and friendly ^_^, in their character arc I will kill its entire family and make all of their friends get lost in space then eaten by dinosaurs. Eos likes baking :) also their wife will divorce it and theyll lose their job and then go poor

3, this is Thyrea, the Atlas adopyed them to then kick him out and forced him to eat sentinels so now they can only eat metal and they are in constant pain. also he sometimes glitches out of reality.

And the three of them are so awesome

I loved the show!! I even did some fanart for it, I never do that! Like a lot of people it was my impetus to actually Play A Game, despite people insisting for years it would be up my alley and getting the old 'I'll add it to my list'. Seeing Cooper run around like a yeehaw maniac had me continuously thinking "oh he and Oliver would be such good friends" and once you start imagining an OC within a setting it's all over for you.

Considering they are both prewar ghouls who served in Alaska as power armor operatives there's a significant chance they do know each other (in WoW, he was a Silver Hand paladin before becoming a DK-- how could I resist the parallels). Maybe one day I'll draw them getting trashed on coke together.

Unlike in WoW, where he deserted on conscience in the middle of the Stratholme culling, he stayed with the military right up until he met an abrupt "retirement" in 2070 after a psycho-induced heart attack inside his armor, an incident that left him deeply traumatized and mistrustful of any sort of organization where you can't say 'no' to a command, which is why he refuses to fully affiliate with the NCR. The "good boy" payout he got for the incident allowed him to retire and purchase his dream ranch in the Jemez Mountains, which he and some fellow hands maintained for seven years until the bombs dropped.

My headcanon is that northern NM didn't get that cooked in the blasts (Alamogordo is presumably a barren field of trinitite, though), but his area was so remote that when communities tried reforming into city-states and pooling their resources, no one could justify the back-and-forth with limited transport options. So he released his small livestock and they all packed up and attempted a cattle drive toward Taos with other ranchers. But winter was setting in, and an irradiated storm from the north blew through in what would be the event that began his ghoulification. Most died, the cattle scattered or also died, and as an absolute husk of an individual he decided "fuck it" and went west with his horse to find the hidden vault that is his son's tomb instead.

And for 200 years he's chased that delusion, not knowing he's been looking in the wrong city the entire time. 👎 He did meet and fall in love with a woman (hi, Senkha!) about 150 years before this RP; they spent decades together and through her he gained experience with psykers and how to wall them out of your surface thoughts with constant music, but he also gained experience with the eventual understanding that most humans grow old and he doesn't. When she passed, he began distancing himself from people.

When he's not scouring the old LA metro haystack for a nonexistant needle, he does mercenary work to support his hobby as a scavenger for prewar memorabilia and civilian tech. His prized possession is a turntable he repaired (and the vinyls he's scavenged for it), and he also has a truck he's completely restored save for the fact that he has no power core for it. So he just sits in it and pretends.

Some mercenary work he did close to their formation put him immediately on the Legion's shit-list, a status in which he takes pride and now goes out of the way to cultivate to the point that he's earned the nickname "Matador" within the NCR. Now that he is traveling with the deserter son of a high-ranking individual in the Legion, life is about to get spicy!

So yeah, I'm having fun. I've joked that this is actually the setting he's supposed to be from and WoW was actually the AU, because my boy was made for this.

Airdropping a new character on y’all

This is Annulus! He’s an old OC I dug up and spruced up for modern use!

He’s a conceptual fusion (not literally a fusion of the characters themselves, but of their concepts) of Dream and Nightmare and is a chaotic mess of an emotional protector. He’s supposed to be keeping the balance but he’s constantly being thrown into chaos and weird situations. His moral compass is a roulette wheel and he’s just generally Doing His Best™️. He’s heavily bug-themed because I noticed that the DT siblings each kind of have a certain type of animal theming (Dream has a lot of wing and bird imagery, NM a lot of deep sea life inspo) and thus I just chose another heavily nonhuman animal classification to make him.

Technically speaking he’s not actually related to the Dreamtale siblings, but he is very much their found family and I’d very much prefer if everyone treated him as if he were their brother.

Also clarifying right now- Annulus is very much an insect, not an arachnid. Those extra little pincer things are called cerci! Also the weird eclipse halo thing he has is optional and decorative, not essential to his design just a pretty little thing.

Annulus is also a tree spirit, and he originates from Celestialtale (name subject to change)! He has his own apples, which are. A ride.

They can instantly stabilize an emotionally disregulated person but if someone who is emotionally stable eats one, they get assigned a random disregulation, like a sudden emotional status condition. So yeah just be careful with those. Also they look like this!

my personal take is that turning tntduo into ocs doesn't really do anything. it doesn't address the problems, it doesn't change the characters, at best it's just a lazy escape from an awful creator. before this, the only time i've seen people turn tntduo into ocs is because they thought dsmp was too cringe of a fandom but they still liked the characters, so they decided to give them new names and call it a day. dsmp has been over for nearly two years and i honestly don't think anyone in the fandom still connects characters with ccs like they did in 2020.

after dream was exposed, i saw almost nobody turning cdream into an oc (partially because he's an awful person). there was just the agreement after a few months passed that we would treat the character as separate from the cc and analyse him without input from the cc, which in my opinion is the most emotionally mature thing to do in this situation as well. of course you're free to do whatever you like but idk oc-ification just seems cheap and performative to me /nm/gen

Idk it's just a difficult situation, and frankly I was and still am also waiting for the internet's verdict, cause personally I am able to separate the character from the content creator, but I haven't been following any of the dsmp content creators for a real long while now. A prime example is ccdream, actually - I hardly know what happened with him, aside from that there were allegations of grooming I believe? I have no idea how it stands as of now, if anything's been proven or disproven, I just don't follow the cc, and I haven't written/drawn anything involving the character either (aside planning a very quick and brief cameo in my fic as a bg character which I could honestly remove but haven't gotten to even thinking about that out just yet)

But ultimately, reading that others also see it similarly, I think I will just continue what I've been doing, aside maybe giving them a nice redesign (their design was always the only thing actually tied to the CC's in my head, and I've felt limited by that conviction for a while now) (I mean like in general characters and content creators have always been completely separate entities for me, the design is the closest they got in my head)

V: "...V." Interviewer: "*clearly flustered* So you, uh, you don't have a nickname, or--?" Johnny: "Not worth it, pal. You're lucky she's even givin' you this much." Interviewer: "But--" Johnny: "Trust me, choom, fishin' for the truth ain't worth it. Drop it while you still can."

Her full name is Riley Bakker Aldana the fifth. For all intents and purposes, "V" is both her nickname and a part of her full name, since it's a patronymic suffix. Since she comes from a long line of Riley Aldana's, V very rarely uses her actual first name and has never consistently gone by it-- she has always simply been "V" from birth. Johnny, of course, thinks this is the stupidest thing he's ever heard in his life.

Johnny: "Ever since V was a child, she's always identified with what's between her legs--" V: "Where are you going with this?" Johnny: "--a cunt." V: *Lets out a long sigh*

V: "Is this an actual interview or is this the second round of sorority rush?" Johnny: "Don't be fuckin' rude. She's a Scorpio, like me." Johnny: "Five foot nine even. Five foot eight and a half if she's standing on one leg." V: "'Bout sums it up."

Riley's cybernetic right leg is roughly a quarter to a half inch shorter than her organic left leg, so she's got a bit of a weird gait and tends to favor her right side more than her left in fights. She'll eventually get it fixed, but she then spends a few months walking around like a newborn deer tripping over nothing as a result.

Orientation?

V: "'I guess 'bi' is the term I'd throw out there for it, but honestly, dating and managing a love life are the last things on my mind these days. Not like I don't have time, I just don't think settling down's in the cards for me yet. But in terms of preference, though, I don't really lean any which way." Johnny: "So basically, 'people hot'."

Nationality/ethnicity?

V: *laughs slightly* "I don't think I'm technically an NUSA citizen since I spent the first twenty-two years of my life in a car, so I don't know if I technically have a 'nationality' in the literal sense. Ethnicity-wise, most if not all of my mom's side of the family is Diné, so that's easy enough. My dad's side is the question mark. Never met the guy, and my mom never talked about him."

Riley's maternal side of the family is Navajo-- her great-grandfather grew up in Kayenta, AZ, and many founding members of the Bakkers were people from there and the surrounding areas who felt it safer to go westward during the Collapse. Conversely, Riley's father Felix is a smuggler who had a brief fling with her mother Ivy when the Bakkers were camped near the NM/Mexico border in 2052 (and post-Unification War now operates around Fort Hancock, TX). Felix is Mexican-Apache, and blissfully unaware that he has a daughter running around 25 years later fucking up shit in Night City.

Favorite fruit?

V: "I...don't know if I've ever actually eaten a real piece of fruit in my life." Johnny: "You're fucking with me." V: "What!?" Johnny: "Fuckin' hell, we're havin' a conversation after this. Just pick a fruit flavor, and move on. Any of 'em." V: "I, uh, um..." *places hands on her hips, sighs, goes silent* "Green apple, then, I don't know."

Favorite season?

V: "Well, summers in the desert were unbearable, and winters in the desert were boring as all sin, so I guess one of the middle seasons? If I had to pick one, I'd probably pick spring-- the places in the Sonora we used to stay at in the springtime were always pretty nice."

Favorite flower?

V: "Mexican Gold Poppies." Johnny: "Oh, what, you have a favorite flower but you don't have a favorite fruit!?"

Riley likes gold/yellow things despite it not really being in her color scheme. While she likes Gold Poppies, the flower I generally associate her with is a Black-eyed Susan, which are symbols of justice and survival.

Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?

V: "Depends, but I generally lean towards coffee." Interviewer: "With anything?" V: "Synmilk." Johnny: "And whiskey." V: "Only on Sundays."

Average hours of sleep?

Johnny: "*snorts* Go on, V. Tell 'em 'bout your thoroughly robust and well-kept sleep schedule." V: "I sleep!" Johnny: "Sure, when you get knocked the hell out or fuckin' flatline on me. *to the interviewer* Two hours a night, average." V: "It's more than that! Stop being dramatic." Johnny: "And when she does fuckin' crash, because y'know she will, she's out for a day plus. It'll be like livin' with a corpse. I could host a music festival in that apartment and she prolly wouldn't even roll over to check the time."

Exaggeration aside, Riley will get around 3-5 hours of sleep a night-- combination of restlessness and preferring to work nights. After about 2 weeks of doing that, her body will basically say "NO MORE" and shut down for a day or two to recover.

Dog or cat person?

V: "Cat." Johnny: "Liar." V: "What?" Johnny: "It's horses." V: "Johnny!"

Dream trip?

V: "Not sure. Always used to hear nice things about Australia-- maybe there, I guess? Or maybe Morocco, or Rome? Somewhere warm and dry. And definitely not on the water."

Favorite fictional character?

Johnny: "Let me tell you a little story about a guy from Seattle and the acid trip he had while staring at a pack of Camel cigarettes--" V: "Nope, not even close." Johnny: "Oh, my deepest apologies, princess, were you going to come up with a better answer from the wealth of popular media you consume on a daily basis?" V: "...Fair enough."

Johnny is referring to the book Still Life with Woodpecker by Tom Robbins, which is probably the only novel Riley's read in the last five years. She hates this book for its pretentiousness but since she rarely consumes pop culture as it is, it's really her only fallback when talking about fiction she's actually engaged with.

Number of blankets you sleep with?

V: "One tops, maybe? I tend to run hot. Maybe two in the winter if it's cold enough."

39: Wildest AU scenario you've ever written

One Day no doubt! I also have never read this AU. New Moon AUs are a dime a dozen; he comes back, he doesn't come back, he comes back later, Bella moves on with Jake, Bella moves on with an OC, Bella moves on with Carlisle...

...but let Edward die? Who lets Edward die? Now, mind you, I do read reddit and it reminds me over and over that people have tons of wild haired ideas. So I'm sure someone else has written a fic that jumps off from NM and when Edward actually succeeds, but I certainly haven't ever found it. It came out of a conversation sleepyvalentina and I were having about Bella/Carlisle fics, and the way many of them act like it would be very easy for Carlisle and Esme to just fall out of love one day in order to get the story started. And sleepyval said, "You know, marriages rarely survive the death of a child."

And we were off to the races.

Does that mean it's a Bella/Carlisle? Well...I promise I'll finish it and y'all can find out.

I'm here to ask you about you Bastard Children of Bones Riley AU before you explode. So, could you please tell me about your AU?

ABSOLUTELY I CAN

So this all started in DMs with Atohi (@/atohii, not actually tagging because I don't want to spam you, my love) who got me into Call of Duty in the first place. It was his special interest and I was like "oh, to show my love for my partner, I should learn more about what he's interested in" you know, as one does. And now it's my special interest, too.

But here's the thing: for my special interests, I create a metric shit ton of OCs. If I have even a vague idea for a character, it's spiralling out of control. This is how Lennie, the all-seeing Irish cryptid Chief of Logistics & Supply officer on the 141's home base, came into being. AND it's how I came up with Cam.

This is Cameron "Cam" Love Davis. I was using this avatar maker app and trying to make a version of Simon, but this one didn't really have the looks I wanted. So I was like "damn he looks like he could maybe be Simon's baby brother, just not Tommy". And then I was like "okay now wait, we all know Ghost's dad is a bastard who regularly slept around, so what if...?"

So Cam is Ghost's trans baby half-brother who felt his life lacked direction and never met Simon but always felt a connection to him. As far as he's aware, Simon's dead - and innocent of the Riley Murders - and he's following his footsteps into the military trying to make his big brother proud from wherever he's looking down from. And he does! He follows his brother's footsteps all the way to the 141 where Ghost, who doesn't know he had any half-siblings at all, oversees his training.

And so I was telling Atohi about all this and then I went "lmao you know it would be really funny if after the reveal Cam was just like 'yeah there's dozens of us let me add you to the groupchat'" and then I went "wait, what if...?"

So now, I have this au where there's a discord server with 21 people in it and 2 people too young to join, and the server is titled The Bastard Children of Bones Riley (1962-2015, RIH) and they all have the same dad and they all hate him and none of them ever met the Riley brothers even though they all knew they were related. (The youngest kid was born after the massacre, so she never had the chance to meet them.) In some versions of this au, the older ones all met for the first time when they showed up at Bones' grave for desecration purposes. (Most of them also brought flowers for Tommy, Beth, Simon, Joey, and Simon's mom's graves.)

And for Ghosts fans, I made the oldest of the Bastard Children have a mom who was an American tourist and went back to the States and had one Keegan Russ. So Keegan and Simon are half-brothers in this au, and Ghost Team does still exist, they just came into being under different circumstances and haven't interacted with the 141. Yet.

I can't really answer that because in my CCEH AU Caramel Candy literally destroyed Dark Cacao Kingdom and turned all the people there into ink except Caramel Arrow and Dark Oreo (also an oc) (also it was like that before Beast Cookies were even released so Mystic Flour you coping flop /jk), so the question just isn't logical for the AU 😭 I want to stick to canons of my own AU as I can,because tbh making those "multiverse beef" roleplays isn't really bring me joy now ;] And I also want people to love my AU and its lore,and it makes me feel weird when people ask anything but not about that TwT /nm /notneg

If I can give my two cents on this (also obviously /nm, just from like a genuinely place of discussion):

I just think it's not that deep. Most of the people I've seen saying things like "they're my ocs now" are really not coming from any place of malice. There's a lot of serious stuff going on in the fandom with the content creators and it really does not hurt anyone to be like "they're mine now". It's a way for people to be like "I am not writing about the real people in any shape or form. I'm taking the base characters and writing them in aus and such. They're disconnected from what's going on."

People have been doing that for ages in fandom, even this fandom, and it's not some kind of like. crime. It's such a dumb thing to discourse about because like just let people do what they want.

Taking a character you love and writing them differently in a fic or something where they're not their canon counterpart is really really common. Not to mention the many times ccs like Wilbur have said that the characters "belong to the fandom". Also, c!Phil's wings, c!Quackity's scar, c!Wilbur's white hair streak, c!Wilbur's train limbo, c!Skephalo being c!Sapnap's parents, and so many other things in canon have come from the fans. A lot of these characters exist because people made animatics and art which inspired the ccs to keep making the story.

I think as long as you're respecting boundaries when writing them, you're pretty free to call them your oc. Like, within my own fics, I've completely rewritten c!Technoblade for one of my modern aus because of the life that he's lived in it. He's still the same base character at his core and thusly I'm respecting boundaries, but other than that, he could probably pass for an oc. Like I just don't think it's that deep to be like "these are my characters now because I don't like the people who made them."

And I detest the idea of "you hate the media so you have to leave the fandom". It's probably one of the worst takes I've seen time and time again. Like there's a difference between being negative about it every single day and being critical of how it is written. I really love this series even if I hated one part of it. I'm not leaving just because of that.

anyways if this is poorly phrased I am rather tired rn and I wrote this quickly but yeah my thoughts on the whole. I just don't think it's worth fighting over some teenagers wanting to emphasize the fact that their writing is separate from the ccs.

I think we're just seeing different sides of twitter because I understand saying they're your ocs in a non-malicious way, but I've genuinely been seeing more intense takes on the situation in a way that just irks me. Also, I'm not referring to making them your ocs as in just putting them in different aus and keeping the core of their character, because I do that too! But they're not your ocs in that sense. You're still taking their characterization from canon. They still share the same names and aspects of their appearance with a cc. And again, I'm all for people just having fun in fandom don't get me wrong, I'm just seeing it phrased in certain ways on twitter that's really irking me.

Also of course you can be critical about a piece of media you're in a fandom for. I'm critical of a lot of writing choices in dsmp. That's not what I'm referring to. When I say if you're not having fun then leave, I'm referring to the people who literally hate every aspect of the media and fandom and that's all they talk about. Like, you're just making yourself miserable at that point, y'know?

Overall, I didn't mean to start a discussion on this, but that's my fault for not clarifying when I made my post. I just don't like the discussion going on on twitter right now because it just feels very weird and toxic in a way that's bugging me and I wanted to complain about it. But I'm not trying to attack teenagers for emphasizing their writing is separate from cc's, and that's not really what I was referring to. I can understand why my post might've sounded like that though so I totally get your point here.
