Okay guys so here’s my Thoughts on this
The chorus girls absolutely blew me away- powerhouse vocals, great dancing, and amazing costumes! At first, to me at least, they seemed a little off somehow (which is perfectly understandable, this was opening night after all), but by the end of the opening song they really got their act together, and they were amazing
Seymour and Audrey- their actors were incredible!! Seymour’s actor really brilliantly captured his awkwardness, stuttering a little without being too over the top, doing all sorts of little tics and such, and Audrey was perfect portraying her abuse and low self esteem
Audrey II. Oh. My. GOODNESS. Absolutely incredible. The puppets themselves were nothing unique among Audrey II puppets, but the VOICES and EFFECTS. Dang. So for this production they actually had two voice actors for Twoey, a guy and a girl (in fact, the guy is also Orin’s actor, so- side note- in Suppertime II when Twoey it luring Audrey closer, it’s just the guy’s voice, so in a way it’s like Orin is leading her to her death 😫😵) The girl was kind of the main voice, and she had an incredible powerhouse voice! Like oh my GOODNESS her voice changed me as a person. And she is only a Sophomore. Like, DANG, queen! There are some moments where it’s like they have this really cool voice distortion thing going on, sometimes they have both actors speaking in unison, giving this really cool, otherworldly effect, and it really amplified the plant’s intensity at all the right moments, it left me absolutely awestruck. In summary, this is the perfect voice(s?) for Twoey that I never knew I needed until now, and I will Never Accept Anything Less Ever Again.
As always, Seymour and Audrey were ADORABLE together- they were so obvious about their feelings for each other, but so oblivious to the other’s feelings for them
The two of them getting super excited together when the first customer comes in and buys $100 worth of roses
“Somewhere That’s Green” was just beautiful, they actually had Audrey do this quick on-stage change into her little dress and apron- the dress opened in the back, and one of the chorus girls held it up and Audrey sort of spun into it, it was a really smooth, lovely effect.
Little shoutout to the chorus girls’ outfits in the “Somewhere That’s Green” scene- they were wearing these colorful striped shirts and adorable giant hair bows (all of their costumes were just spot on, but I wanted to mention this one in particular because it was so cute)
“Closed For Renovation” Seymour and Audrey dancing together was just the CUTEST THING!! That scene watered my crops, cleared my skin, and brought about world peace
“Dentist” was really funny, Orin rocked this role, he had this whole Elvis hips thing going on, and at one of the “say ‘aaaahh’”s the customer in the chair actually screams, and it was perfect
“Mushnik and Son” was absolutely hilarious, they performed it so well- at one point Mushnik actually holds a rose in his mouth as he’s dancing this sort of tango, it was hysterical 😂😂😂. Seymour was just Uncomfortable(TM) for the entire first part (this was where a lot of the nervous tics came in). And at “I’ll hold my breath until” Mushnik just holds out the “l” for about a full minute until Seymour gives in and Mushnik collapses on the floor.
One interesting change I noticed from what I’m used to, in “Now/It’s Just the Gas” when Seymour is like “Now, yes I WIIIILL!! But I... can’t.” It’s not because he couldn’t bring himself to shoot Orin, but because he had dropped the gun and was strapped to the chair and trying to reach it with his feet, but couldn’t get it. This leaves an interesting question open- in this production, would Seymour have actually shot Orin if he had been physically able to do so?
During “Suppertime” the girls were up on a high platform and the lighting on them was just perfect
In “Suppertime” as the plant was eating Mushnik, Seymour was sitting on the ground, head in hands, rocking back and forth like he was having a panic attack
In “Call Back in the Morning” Seymour and Audrey ended up tangled up together in all the phone cords and they both just sort of giggle nervously as they untangle themselves and they were just so AWKWARD and CUTE you could just cut the tension between them with a knife
“Suddenly Seymour” oh my word. I’ve mentioned this before, but the lead actors really sell their characters, and you could just feel that they put their entire hearts and souls into that song, and they made it so believable. It was so genuine, it made me Emotional. Also, they added a little instrumental dance break after the third verse, which I admit I wasn’t too crazy about, because it sort of threw off the buildup of the song at that point, but it was still so dang SWEET that I honestly can’t even be mad.
In “The Meek Shall Inherit” when Seymour was all “NO! NO!!” That whole thing- the people who were offering him contracts were standing frozen holding out the contracts, and at each “NO!” Seymour would push them away, but they just sort of... swung back?? It kind of reminded me of those old Bobo dolls, and I think that was really cool.
And a general thing they did which I think was really neat was have this sort of doomsday clock at the top of the stage, which for most of the show just ticked normally, but when Crap Was About to Go Down the clock was just flying, subtly but effectively adding to this feeling of impending doom.
Overall, I would rate this about 64,000/10, I’m planning on going to see it again (maybe even two more times!!), and hopefully I’ll bring one of my friends along too (I’ve been trying to convince her to come see it without pushing too hard, but I think now that I’ve actually seen this production and she saw how excited I am about it, I think she’s finally sold 😁) Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
