September's Night Sky Notes: Marvelous Moons
by Kat Troche of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific
September brings the gas giants Jupiter and Saturn back into view, along with their satellites. And while we organize celebrations to observe our own Moon this month, be sure to grab a telescope or binoculars to see other moons within our Solar System! We recommend observing these moons (and planets!) when they are at their highest in the night sky, to get the best possible unobstructed views.
The More the Merrier
As of September 2024, the ringed planet Saturn has 146 identified moons in its orbit. These celestial bodies range in size; the smallest being a few hundred feet across, to Titan, the second largest moon in our solar system.

Even at nearly 900 million miles away, Titan can be easily spotted next to Saturn with a 4-inch telescope, under urban and suburban skies, due to its sheer size. With an atmosphere of mostly nitrogen with traces of hydrogen and methane, Titan was briefly explored in 2005 with the Huygens probe as part of the Cassini-Huygens mission, providing more information about the surface of Titan. NASA’s mission Dragonfly is set to explore the surface of Titan in the 2030s.

This mosaic of Saturn's moon Enceladus was created with images captured by NASA's Cassini spacecraft on Oct. 9, 2008, after the spacecraft came within about 16 miles (25 kilometers) of the surface of Enceladus. Credit: NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute
Saturn’s moon Enceladus was also explored by the Cassini mission, revealing plumes of ice that erupt from below the surface, adding to the brilliance of Saturn’s rings. Much like our own Moon, Enceladus remains tidally locked with Saturn, presenting the same side towards its host planet at all times.
The Galilean Gang
The King of the Planets might not have the most moons, but four of Jupiter’s 95 moons are definitely the easiest to see with a small pair of binoculars or a small telescope because they form a clear line. The Galilean Moons – Ganymede, Callisto, Io, and Europa – were first discovered in 1610 and they continue to amaze stargazers across the globe.
Tumblr media
The Jovian system: Europa, Io, Ganymede, and Callisto. Credit: Stellarium Web
Ganymede: largest moon in our solar system, and larger than the planet Mercury, Ganymede has its own magnetic field and a possible saltwater ocean beneath the surface.
Callisto: this heavily cratered moon is the third largest in our solar system. Although Callisto is the furthest away of the Galilean moons, it only takes 17 days to complete an orbit around Jupiter.
Io: the closest moon and third largest in this system, Io is an extremely active world, due to the push and pull of Jupiter’s gravity. The volcanic activity of this rocky world is so intense that it can be seen from some of the largest telescopes here on Earth.
Europa: Jupiter’s smallest moon also happens to be the strongest candidate for a liquid ocean beneath the surface. NASA’s Europa Clipper is set to launch October 2024 and will determine if this moon has conditions suitable to support life. Want to learn more? Rewatch the July 2023 Night Sky Network webinar about Europa Clipper here.
Be sure to celebrate International Observe the Moon Night here on Earth September 14, 2024, leading up to the super full moon on September 17th! You can learn more about supermoons in our mid-month article on the Night Sky Network page!

⚝───⭒─ 30 DAY HC’S | HERA ─⭒───⚝
HERA | her skin is fair. her hair is a dark chocolate, always tied up into a bun that sits on the crown of her head, with two neat strands resting on her shoulders. her eyes are a turquoise colour. she is always seen wearing her crown. she is an average height, leaning towards the taller side. she has a slender build.
┍━━━━━━━━━━━━━━☟━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┑
i've always imagined Hera to be the epitome of regality. she is elegance personified, a magisterial beauty.
yet, i hc her to have another side; though it is true that Hera is always dignified and cool, i think she can also be fun, and even crazy.
i like the idea that Hera is always wearing fashionable outfits, looking incredibly sophisticated, but at the same time, she's also prepared to eat cake off the floor and swear with language you didn't even realise existed.
she's a party girl, she's insane. but she's also beautiful, and she's powerful.
i think this idea is enforced by Hera's usual role in myths, where she plays the part of the vengeful, jealous wife, the pursuer who makes the hero go through all forms of hell. and yet, Hera herself always remains the Queen of Olympus, and few are bold enough to tell her off.
something else which i don't think people talk enough about, is how Hera is a skilled warrior. during Dionysus' Indian War, and during the Trojan War, Hera shows off her skill when she beats Artemis without breaking so much as a sweat.
i love the idea that archery is one of Hera's skills, and i love the idea that she shared her skills with her war children; Ares, Enyo and Eris.
as we all know, as a child, Hera was swallowed by Cronus along with her other siblings, so she didn't have much of a childhood, nor did Rhea have much of a chance at parenting.
i have this hc that Hera is the most similar to Rhea from all of Rhea's children. and i think that because they're so similar, Rhea has the hardest time bonding with her.
this explains, for me at least, why it is said in the myths that Hera spent time in Oceanus and Tethys' house, and why Hera often calls the two her "parents".
relating to the idea of Hera spending much of her youth in Oceanus' house, i like the idea that Hera was close friends with many of Oceanus' daughters. in particular, i like the idea that Metis and Hera, while not close, were at least decent towards each other.
some might say that Hera would have never liked Metis because of her relationship with Zeus, but Metis was Zeus' first wife, so i've always seen it that when Zeus was with Metis, it was before he had loved Hera, and before Hera had loved Zeus. thus, there was no reason for Hera to feel jealous or malicious towards Zeus.
and if Hera and Metis were friends, then it explains why Hera inevitably forms a rather good relationship with Metis' daughter, Athena, despite Hera usually being quite cold to her step-children: they become allies during the Trojan War, they both support Jason in his quest for the Golden Fleece, they team up to overthrow Zeus when they get sick of his arrogance, etc. (Hera's anger at Athena's birth wasn't so much directed at Athena herself, but rather Zeus for having performed the role of "mother" and "father" by giving birth to Athena on his own; an offensive act to Hera, being the goddess of women, family, and childbirth.)
going back to Rhea and Hera; something that has always stuck out to me about Hera is that she always takes Zeus back even though he cheats on her so many times. part of this is, of course, that Hera doesn't want to lose her status as Queen, but i definitely think that part of it is because she loves Zeus.
so yes, Hera does go pretty insane sometimes, and she does some terribly cruel things to the unfortunate lovers of Zeus, but why would she reduce Semele to mere ash, or torment Io with a gadfly, or force Leto to run from island to island unable to give birth, why would Hera do such malicious and evil things if she didn't feel genuinely hurt and betrayed by Zeus? if she didn't love Zeus?
Amphitrite is the wife of Poseidon, another notorious cheater in the Greek pantheon. yet, the retribution of Amphitrite against Poseidon's lovers are significantly less known than the antics of Hera. i personally think that this is because Hera's love for Zeus is real. it's not simply out of duty. she really, willingly loves him, and i think he returns that love, though i won't go into Zeus' perspective here.
now back to Rhea; Rhea goes through unimaginable pain at the hands of Cronus. in my Rhea hc's (scroll down to Rhea's section) i wrote that i imagine Rhea to have a forgiving nature. i like the idea that in spite of what Cronus does to her, she still forgives him. and i think that Rhea's forgiving nature is mirrored in Hera.
time and time again, Hera continues to forgive Zeus and welcome him back. Hera is devious at times of course, i think this cunningness comes from Cronus. but she is also forgiving. in a sense, she is stubborn and determined. and i think this headstrong characteristic is what she gets from Rhea.
related to the previous discussion, i've seen a lot of people say that by having so many affairs, Zeus disrespects Hera's domain as the patron of marriages. that it's ironic that the goddess of marriage herself is the one most in need of a divorce. but honestly, i disagree.
in fact, there is no one more suited to the role of marriage than Hera. she is the model of loyalty, steadfastness, and purity. no marriage is perfect, Hera's least of all. but still, she somehow finds the strength to continue. she remains loyal to Zeus. there is no one who understands the meaning of marriage more than her. and i think that's what makes her so perfect as the goddess of marriage.
now, on a semi-related note; i've heard of the take that Hera would be close siblings with Poseidon. personally, i disagree. as i said earlier, after Zeus, Poseidon is probably the next most infamous cheater. i can't imagine that Hera condones his actions, and as such, i just can't see Hera being extremely buddy-buddy with Poseidon.
of course, i think that Hera loves all her siblings, and they all get along somehow or the other, but if i was to name her closest siblings, i feel that Hades and Demeter would be the most viable candidates.
even though Demeter has a child with Zeus, i don't think that Hera has ever been malicious towards Demeter because of it. i say this because i can't recall any myths where Hera is cruel to Persephone, the lovechild of Demeter and Zeus. in fact, Persephone ends up joing the ranks of Hera and Amphitrite as a fellow queen, so i don't think that Hera hates her terribly.
one last final thing; related to Hera's step-children. i read somewhere that Hera only ever attacked the lovers of Zeus whom she feared Zeus loved more than her or who could threaten her status as Queen. so, Hera didn't attack all of Zeus' lovers (actually, i think this explains why Hera doesn't attack Demeter- i don't think that Zeus was ever in love with her).
furthermore, Hera is the goddess of motherhood and family. she has a strong maternal nature. i think Hera is undoubtedly peeved about the fact that she has so many step-children, but i don't think that she hates them.
there are many instances in the myths where Hera works well her step-children. she forms an alliance with Athena during the Trojan War, when Hera and Artemis are fancied by the giant sons of Poseidon, Artemis slays them both (and one could argue that she defends Hera's honour in doing so), Apollo became her ally when she tried to overthrow Zeus, Dionysus was the one who summoned Hephaestus to free her from the golden chair which imprisoned her, and i can't think of a specific example relating to Hermes, but it is generally said that Hermes was so charming and well-spoken, that all the gods loved him, including Hera.

                                     EVENT CONCLUSION
An innocent invitation from the leader of Kings Collective disrupted the peace that settled between mutants in the seedy underbelly of Chicago. Benjamin Granger invited the members of The Blackburn Syndicate and The Jem Family into the Garfield Conservatory to prove a point. But, at what cost to his own members and the rest of the mutants in attendance?
The event conclusion for The Peace Treaty and The Betrayal is below! Please note that both open and taken skeletons were mentioned in this conclusion. Because of this, your threads are allowed to mention what those open skeletons did!
TW: gun violence, blood mention, violence
Early in the night, TETHYS calls police on orders from Benjamin to get rid of the protesters outside. Within minutes they arrive to disperse the crowd. Some protesters question which side the police are on and after resisting arrest, are driven to the closest station to be booked.
PANDORA and ARIEL sneak off to another room for some privacy butare seen by SUTTUNGR. He sees a second of PANDORA before walking away, filing the information for a later time.
CHARAN and DEMIOS are seen by EPIMETHEOS in one of the secluded rooms as he’s walking by. Noticing the closeness between the two, he questions the nature of their relationship for a moment. He goes off to find HATI to let them know what he’s seen.
HYDRA watches as PORTIA corners JANUS in the Fern Room and watches as their conversation plays out. They step closer as they notice PORTIA inch closer to them. After a moment, they watch as she walks away and they go off to patrol the other rooms. IO is the next victim to cross PORTIA when she catches them peeing on the plants.
The beginning of the night goes as planned, allowing various members of each gang to get comfortable with each other. It’s only when Benjamin shoots a Blackburn spy in front of each gang. Blood splatters across different members of the gangs due to their unfortunate seating arrangement. Chaos ensues as members of each gang scramble to either escape or take advantage of the destroyed peace treaty.
PAN comes into contact with EPIMETHEUS, landing multiple blows to the older mutant. He also stops PALLENE before he allows her to pass, unsure of why he does so.
NIX and IAPETUS push through the crowd to find Blackburn members and get them to CHARAN, who ran towards Alma and pushed her through a portal as fast as possible. Other Blackburn members followed while PANDORA is held up by PROTEUS.
DEMIOS finds KERBEROS with a smile on his face and the two decide the best course of action is to cause a distraction and allow others to escape, Their combined powers cause a fire to break out and spread almost immediately. Various Jem Family members manage to escape due to that and IO carrying other members.
HYDRA stops DEMIOS by planting false memories into their The Horticulture Hall, Jensen Room, and Monet Garden are almost completely burnt to the ground while the Show House, Aroid House, and Desert House managed to survive with some damage after the fire spread.
Bystanders and others who see the fire contact the police and firefighters, who show up within minutes due to the number of calls made to 911. Firefighters descend onto the Conservatory as police evacuate any remaining mutants from the building. RHEA helps firefighters in the Fern Room as TETHYS and HYDRA distract police from going into the Horticulture Hall. PUCK is tasked with cleaning up the mess Benjamin made and asks TITANIA to help.
Benjamin finally talks to the police, thanking TETHYS and HYDRA for their work. He pays off the police who showed up and promises that he along with the other bosses will go in for an interview the next day. No arrests were made.
After all outsiders leave, Benjamin calls a meeting with all Kings members. He informs those who did not know of the plan that he did what needed to be done. “In order to be taken seriously, we have to get our hands dirty.” Members don’t start leaving the salvaged part of the Conservatory until 2:00 am. HYDRA and PORTIA leave at 5:00 am and head to her apartment.
HATI whispers into Alma’s ear about what EPIMETHEUS told them. Before CHARAN has a moment to breathe after stepping into Green Mill, Alma mentions the sighting and questions what it was about. HATI jumps in to question her loyalty to Blackburn. CHARAN mentions that the point of the peace treaty was to create bonds with the other gangs then leaves, followed by NIX and PANDORA.
SUTTUNGR heals the Blackburn members that were injured before he could help them escape. EPIMETHEUS has injuries from PAN and IO, earning him a lecture in reply. DIONE suffered from steam burns as they tried to put out a fire as it surrounded them and PHOEBE. NIX was burned as well.
Once back at The House, Damien uses the night as a lesson for TITAN. He lectures his son about being the type of boss that people bother respect and fear, something that Benjamin made sure he had that night. Damien also mentions that in order to take over, he will have to learn that these things happen in their world. GANYMEDE backs him up, saying that TITAN will be fine in the future.
IO is stuck at The House helping those who were injured during the night. CALYPSO allows him to heal their burns from their escape.
HYPERION retreats to Cornerstore Convenience to think about which powers he saw that night. Previously uncaring of EUROPA, he noticed how they kept calm under the pressure. PHOBOS also caught his eye even though they weren’t as impressive as he would think.
Alma, Benjamin, and Damien arrive at the local police department the next day to answer questions about the event and fire. All three bosses recite the same thing, no it was not a planned fire and no it was not a crime committed by any of their members. Benjamin takes the police chief aside to pay them off, even more, to make sure the fire gets swept under the rug.
The Chicago Tribune’s front page the next day is about the fire that broke out, with a photo from one of their reporters plastered across it. The Tribune questions whether or not the cause of the fire is tensions between rival mutant gangs in the city and speculates if more violence will follow this. Members of the Chicago government allude to a possible crackdown on mutant laws and reforms to stop similar acts from happening. Joan Zabinski, the leader of the anti-mutant coalition The Chicago Party For Humans and political candidate, is quoted in the article saying the following, “The unchecked power of mutants in this city has allowed extreme violence to happen on our streets. If we do not take this as a warning sign to rewrite our laws and elect someone who will put humans first, more violence is bound to happen.” The Tribune also reached out to the Conservatory who responded by saying, “The fire that happened was a complete accident. While mutants were in attendance last night for an event, it was not caused by any of the guests. Several candles used for decoration were knocked over in passing and caused the fire to break out. We are hoping to reopen soon.”

Note
First of all, I love your planet characters, their designs are super cool, second, I was wondering if you have any concepts for the dwarf planets or important moons like Europa or Titan? I'm kinda a big space nerd and was just curious if you thought about those ><
For the updated designs, these are the only ones I can show for the sneak peek ;)
Tumblr media
[Image Above: Haumea, Makemake, Pluto, Eris, Ceres]
134340 Pluto
Once one of the main planets of the solar system before his reclassification in 2006. He is soft-spoken and usually talks to his silent moon, Charon.  He’s currently coping up on being a dwarf planet and ‘big brother’ to his new companions (but he usually  fails at it).
136199 Eris
She’s a bit rude to Pluto (in a tsundere way) and refuses to call him 'big brother’. She usually carries a creepy doll called, 'Dysnomia’.
1 Ceres
The eldest among the dwarf planets, she is the only one who lives separately to the other minor planets.
Because she’s Mars and Jupiter’s neighbour, she somehow picked on some of their manners. She can be very enthusiastic and creepy at the same time. She acts like a big sister to the other dwarf planets…and Neptune.
136472 Makemake
One of the newest members of the minor planet class. His personality resembles Pluto a bit but a bit more upbeat. He has a bunny hat and was nicknamed 'Bunny’ because he was found on Easter Day.
136108 Haumea
A serious young lady. She’s usually silent but could be snarky at times. She likes to tease Makemake. When Christmas comes she usually dresses up as Santa to give presents. She has two circular hair clips which she named 'Hi'iaka’ and 'Namaka’.
++++++++++++++
FROM OLD STRIPS
Some other TNOs that are potentially dwarf planets but not recognized by IAU (Old designs)
Tumblr media
90377 SednaSedna is a quirky red-headed young woman who lives really REALLY faraway from Sun.She’s such a ridiculous procrastinator that she takes more than 10000 years to complete a task(do not ask her to do something for you, unless you live that long ). Her place is really cold that’s why she wears layers of clothes. She probably lives alone.
50000 QuaoarQuaoar is a relative of Makemake and a close friend of Pluto(literally and figuratively). He’s named after a native-American creation god.His size was constantly revised over time, so no one knows his exact measurements. Some say he used to be bigger than he is now… until a certain incident, He has a familiar, a raven named Weywot.
90482 Orcus and Vanth(Moon)Also called the Anti-PlutoA relative of Pluto which acts and looks almost similar yet opposite to him, just like a mirror. Even his name is a counterpart underworld god like Pluto’s.He has a moon named Vanth which acts like a counterpart of Charon. Pluto thinks it’s a bit creepy.
(225088) 2007 OR10Once nicknamed 'Snow White’(which turned out inappropriate), 2007 OR10 is on a journey of self-discovery.After all, this guy still has no official name.Has reddish-hair due to methane exposed in radiation and might be similar to Quaoar. One of the top three guys who live far away in the solar system, along with Sedna and Eris.
