This episode just had like a biiit more emotional baggage than I was expecting

i'm wondering if monomon decided to start working with hallownest as more of a strategic move. if she's working with hallownest, but her loyalties are still with unn, it might help decrease the pressure on the mosskin, since now the pale beings want to keep monomon working with them. but by working with hallownest and decreasing the pressure on the mosskin, that gives unn more time to recover from the losses of her land, (both the land given to the oumas and the land stolen by the white lady), before hallownest goes to try and fully colonize greenpath

she might also have agreed to work with hallownest to try and increase the resources that the average bug has access to. specifically, information about the world outside of hallownest and hallownest itself that isn't full of propaganda about how great hallownest and the pale beings are

that's a similar hc i share!!! especially due to her position between greenpath and the mushroom's land - what hallownest claims and walks through w/o issue - and what unn retains, she is able to act as a sort of pressure? making it more difficult for people to reach further in greenpath, as they'd be surrounded by people who act in unn's alliance and have the risk of cutting off ties with monomon herself who is clearly an intelligent (and fairly powerful imo) being. not only would it harm hallownest, but increases risk of any retaliation and for what? something the moss knights will likely be able to steal back within a few years, and that's IF they relinquish it? for hallownest, it's not worth it to proceed further here, you've already gained an alliance that is favorable for you.

++ and then politically, monomon, with her honored position, is allowed to speak in unn's defense. while she ultimately doesn't have much say if the pale beings are ever certain they want to proceed with an idea, she does have enough influence that she can get at least some hallownest citizens to be 'hm. fucked up' at it, and perhaps not engage with whatever plan they're sent at all - or at least, be more lenient toward the mosskin regarding it.

the note about monomon taking advantage of her position between hallownest, unn's land, and presumably deepnest* i hadn't really considered in-depth regarding the archive, but it's good on her to preserve these other group's cultures and still let hallownest learn of it, especially if her archive (or, at least the information) was established prior to hallownest, you'd get to see how these societies were in their prime. i wonder if it was this access which drew moths especially to her archive, those who wanted to relearn what was left of their people after hallownest's... whole assimilation.

(* as connected to "queen's gardens"; thinking abt it now, at one point, she may have had easier access to deepnest prior to wl's claim, if she were there... an aside - i am just thinking over at how much more would need to be updated once monomon earns herrah's trust)

this just makes me wonder more how the focus of the archive and sanctum differed. while the sanctum is firmly established as a place for faithful scholars to the king, monomon (under the assumption she's merely allied with hallownest rather than a certain part of it) is quite clearly not expected as a part of hallownest and while she may respect pk's / wl's word as another leader and higher god, she will not praise them on that alone. under this whole idea, it's safe to say she isn't so focused on hallownest's own improvement. but of course the pale beings' values differ, and then you have to ask just how much of this would she be allowed to share with the others she works alongside? - specifically the mosskin in this case... bc i'm sure hallownest would like to retain their status as some grand force.

-> i'm really too tired to try to figure more specifics of that out, but i do think it'd be interesting if she did instead push more of a fair alliance with the others that hallownest was cheating materials from (specifically mosskin in this case, although perhaps she was able to help moths in some ways? depending on how many moths were within her archive and willing to step up. the mantises meanwhile can likely fend for their own share, but the offer remains for them) where some ideas were transferred to her archive for her to look over for any adjustments that they weren't aware of that were only really seen in other communities. allowing her to trade geo for the others' time in only improving [item/s]. and then of course if it's her own, while hallownest is more industrial and has an easier time with producing these, she wouldn't hide anything while sharing w those she is continuously requesting help from you know?

++ that does make me really :'| though if she, or another in the archive, discovered the properties of crystals and unintentionally led into the whole... taking the peak away from moths for their own purposes. it'd probably first been trying to keep it quiet, or at least sort something out while still keeping the place intact, only for the more corrupt just seeing this as an opportunity and letting it spiral out of control to the point where becoming a miner was just such a common job for the working class with hardly any acknowledgement to the moths who clearly once held the crystals and area itself in high regard... man. she was definitely more careful afterward of course but yikes

‘got tagged by @wancestroll to share some albums I’ve been listening to lately (thank u angel). some musings under the cut. 

This album came out at the end of last year but I stumbled upon it towards the beginning of this year. It has gotten me through some Bad moments and I have had it on repeat variously throughout the year. It’s a really coherent and beautiful neo soul/blues album with excellent production. 

Michael Kiwanuka is so bloody talented it’s almost not fair! It opens up with a BANGER (You Ain’t the Problem), which never fails to make me want to dance and I just put it on repeat when I’m having a bad day. It’s a really beautiful journey through some highs and lows, other personal favourites include Piano Joint (this kind of love) - which always makes me cry and yearn because it’s beautiful - and Hero.

It’s the perfect album to blast on sunny days driving around with the windows down because it’s too hot, but it’s also the perfect album to blast when you’re feeling down and want to capture the feeling of a summers day. In short it is gorgeous and I have been obsessed.  

SAWAYAMA - Rina Sawayama

Goshhh this album is just so perfect as a debut album. You would actually be forgiven for thinking this was her second or third full album release, I haven’t been this impressed with a debut album since Tei Shi’s Crawl Space. It honestly sparkles with so much passion and personality. 

She manages to blend so many of my favourite genres into incredible songs that just create such a unique sound, that still sounds incredibly like Rina Sawayama. She draws from such a wide array of influences and experiences - from heartbreaking songs touching on her family to tongue in cheek evaluations of societies obsession with celebrities and wealth.  

It’s fun, it’s heartbreaking, it bangs from start to finish and truly cements Rina as one of the more exciting pop acts at the moment. Highlights for me include: Comme des Garçons (like the boys), Love Me 4 Me and Who’s Gonna Save U Now?. 

It was the perfect soundtrack to a weird, weird year, I could go on for years about this but it would just end up being me screaming and squealing and pointing at every little detail she added (like the concert sounds of who’s gonna save u now?!!!!) 

Petals for Armor - Hayley Williams

This album was probably the one I was anticipating the most this year, from the moment she started dropping hints about PFA I was hooked. As many of y’all will know I am a MAJOR Paramore and Hayley Williams fan, I love the way they have evolved as they have grown up and how it’s weirdly evolved with my own tastes. 

I truly love this album so much, it’s not massively coherent but sometimes albums don’t need to be. Hayley tries out so many different vibes and sounds it makes total sense why she released it as three EPs, giving each of the songs the space they all need in the world before we scrambled to listen to all of them at once. 

It’s also a hugely personal album and as someone who has felt similar feelings of depression and loneliness and grappling with loss and heartbreak I really love how some of the lyrics just really summed up stuff I didn’t even realise I was feeling. 

It starts out very moody and atmospheric and carries us on a journey from anger through to love in such a nice way. There are some duds (I am not a massive fan of My Friend for example) but she delivers them all in such a way I rarely skip songs I don’t love. 

Highlights for me are: Leave it Alone (very atmospheric, very autumnal, very late night walk in the woods, love the imagery and it kills me), Cinnamon (didn’t love this when I first heard it but I was WRONG, it’s really fun and makes you wanna dance and is an ode to loving yourself which we all need a bit more of), Dead Horse (my favourite fuck u song about an ex, it’s cutting where it needs to be and it’s a banger, and it makes me feel like summer and also smashing someone’s car with a baseball bat, and srsly Fuck You Chad), Why We Ever (another one I didn’t vibe with butttt actually now loveeeee so much, it’s so peaceful and full of love and sadness and makes me feel like I’m floating and also like I wanna cry? as someone who has a predilection to self sabotage something good I felt it), Sugar on the Rim (honestly I just wanna dance to this song, preferably in a gay club with pals, it’s so fun and 80s I adore it) and finally Crystal Clear (it makes me feel like I’m floating on a pool of water and serene and peaceful and loved and I’m so happy for her that she can write songs like that, it’s about embracing fear in love and just a really gorgeous song, also the sample of her Grandad’s song is adorable). 

All in all I adore the album and had it on repeat A LOT since it came out, hopefully I will be able to see her perform it live at some point but at this point I am just thrilled that we have been able to experience an album from Hayley Williams like this. 

Flip Phone Fantasy - Ocean Grove

Finally, Flip Phone Fantasy is an album I was introduced to not so long ago (thank u Allie) and I love it. It slaps, it fucks, it is the perfect mad modern nu-metal esque album. 

Again I love the way it blends lots of different genres and sounds and vibes to create something very unique, fun and energetic. I have had this on repeat for about 2 weeks now, so you could say I’m a little obsessed. 

Highlights on the album include: SUPERSTAR (just like a real hot song, love the imagery, wanna dance in a club to it, instead end up just dancing around the house and shower to it instead), GUYS FROM THE GORD (very trance/drum and bass kinda vibes, which I loveeee, reminds me of shady clubs at Uni and going on hikes up Constitution Hill high to watch the sunrise, 10/10 vibes) and ASK FOR THE ANTHEM (another v hot song but in a different way from Superstar, the lyrics are immaculate and the vocal effects are killer, again would party to this song). 

Their first album is also a banger but honestly at the moment this is the kind of vibe I’m going for. Something a little sexy, quite summery, makes you want to dance and also rage at the same time - which is honestly an Eternal Mood.

Laccaria tortilis

Komori was the quiet type. It was apparent from the moment she attended UA. She never spoke a word and remained inconspicuous right up until she had to introduce herself in front of the class. She stuttered and mumbled through her introduction and sat silently next to her friend, Kaibara during lunch. They asked about her quirk. Mushroom, she replied. They pried no further and the conversation ended. They were loud, some were dim-witted, others sharp-tongued and gutsy. But it didn't matter. None of it mattered. Every action she made, every word she spoke turned her classmate's minds into mycelium, where she was free to grow whatever parasitic fungus she chose. It was only a matter of time. One month. She learned their names and quirks. The villains attacked the neighbouring class Two months.  She learned of the 'successor' at the festival. Her class made a collective effort to shine but were simply outmatched. Whatever. Not like she cared. Three months. Sen started to ask why she was so silent and complacent. What a pain. What a pain. He had to go. He had to go FIRST. but she would be merciful, oh yes. Four months. She delivered her data diligently to her superiors. Not like she was fond of any of them. Tomura looked like he had fleas and Kurogiri was no fun at all. The blond chick was boy crazy, and the black haired one was plain boring. Twice was pretty fun though. She didn't care much for everyone else.

The training camp rolled around. She had already given the van-guard the coordinates, so there was no risk of being caught. As her 'friends' slept peacefully beside her she thought about how easy it would be to kill them all. clog their airways with spores, let them pass peacefully. The sheer thought made her chuckle. She was powerful, no doubt, but she was not foolish. Besides, if things went right, she would have an ally soon. Not everything went according to plan, but it was almost time. She glanced at the floor plan for the dorms and memorized it. She picked up on schedules, relationships and habits. She gained the trust of her classmates. She cured sicknesses with her mushrooms. Then finally, she started to spread her spores of lies. "I can't grow mushrooms inside of people." "My mushrooms stay in place until they're removed by hand." "I can't make poisonous mushrooms." "I'm no good at close combat..." Her persona was strengthened in each lie. How could sweet Kinoko ever hurt a fly? Kinoko isn't very good at combat, so we'll protect her! Kinoko can't pull off anything deadly with those fungi! With each phrase she picked up in passing, her certainty strengthened. Now,... who to get rid of first? She pondered, looking through her case files and flipping through photos. Memories. Pfft. No amount of these 'memories' could ever make up for the sheer thrill of getting away with murder. She giggled in a sinister tone as she settled on a target. The moonlight framed her innocent looking silhouette, as the rest of her face was swallowed up in the darkness of the night. If only Mr Moon knew, she was anything but 'Innocent'.

2. skin care/moisturizer

i think the skin care industry is almost as predatory as the makeup industry, the majority of it is unnecessary if not harmful. at least girlies can get really into skin care as a transition out of a full-face makeup and i think that’s okay if they keep it minimal. i just use cerave cleanser and moisturizer, and benzoyl peroxide wash if im breaking out. i will say that sometimes acne is painful, and skin care for that purpose doesn’t fall under the category of beauty treatment. but like do ur research bc skin care is scarily unregulated especially in the US, and i think dermatologists can b total charlatans. definitely plastic-surgeon-adjacent in social media presence, which immediately decreases my trust in them. oh and i think sunscreen is probably good.

12. veganism

a good diet, and i really respect people who do it for ethical reasons. i would like to move toward a vegan diet but im super picky and have sensory issues with some food textures, which is why im gradually introducing a lot of important foods (like beans, mushrooms) into my diet, but it’s difficult and a slow process. i do have a problem with “militant vegan” rhetoric, i think a lot of it is really useless in converting people to veganism and more about moral superiority at that point. i won’t expand on that lol cause i know how you girls like to tussle

13. who is a better lesbian ally: straight women vs gay men

hmmmm. in my experience straight women. unfortunately my experience with gay men has been, probably, worse than average? gay men (and, infuriatingly, gender nonconforming gay men themselves) bullied me in highschool for my gender nonconformity more directly and cruelly than any straight man did, which was a disappointment because i wanted gay male friends. i know there are gay men who are wonderful lesbian allies, and i bet i would value that more if i lived in a more homophobic environment, so i won’t completely side-eye women who value lgb solidarity over female solidarity because in some environments that makes a LOT of sense. but in my experience i will feel more of a kinship for even the clumsiest straight woman ally than the average gay man. ultimately, gay men are men and they are usually just as misogynistic.

Childhood Best Friends:

Hugh’s parents move next to Paul’s parents when they move from Puerto Rico.  

He can’t speak much English at first and Paul thinks he’s kind of funny.  Despite this, they bond over being the youngest two kids in the cul-de-sac.  Paul teaches Hugh English in exchange for Hugh teaching him Spanish. 

Hugh quickly declares he’s going to marry Paul after his mom tells him you should always marry your best friend.  

X-Men/Superpowers:

Hugh runs a free, mutant friendly clinic in downtown New York City with Dr. Julian Bashir and Dr. Phlox.  All three of them are mutants, but only Phlox has a physical mutation.

Paul Stamets, Ph.D, is a professor at Colombia University. He was not born a mutant, but after a jealous professor attempted to poison him and his mushrooms saved him, he’s not entirely...all human anymore.  He had been pro-mutant even before his transformation and had taken Sylvia Tilly, one of his students in the doctorate program, under his wing and roof when she was kicked out of her parent’s house.  (And her mutation is relatively minor.)

Hugh’s power is matter transmutation (it’s actually a minor form of probability control that extends exclusively to the shape and form of matter).  As long as he has the right ‘ingredients’ he can make just about anything.

Paul finds out about the clinic and goes to check it out b/c he’s kind of freaked out about all his changes and he doesn’t really trust his old doctor...It happens to be the day Hugh is working there.  Paul releases a lot of spores, just saying.

Hugh and the other two doctors live above the clinic together.  That means they’re there 24/7 and have quite an efficient system for getting runaways off the streets and someplace safe.  That being said, they’re always happy to have an ally like Paul.  

Magical Realism:

Paul is a mushroom druid!  And Hugh is the son of a life cleric (doctor) and water witch (scuba instructor & guide).  He takes after his mom, the life cleric.  

As a life cleric, Hugh is unique suited to the medical field.  He’s not the most powerful of life clerics, but he has the best control over what powers he has.

As a mushroom druid, there’s really no particular job Paul is pushed towards?  However, like most mushroom druids he wants to stick with mushrooms forever.  It’d a big surprise when he takes off for the big city and likes it.  He’s got his own mushroom forest at home and is always introducing people to the wonderful properties of magic.

Paul ends up tripping over himself and breaking his arm, which lands him in the hospital.  Who should end up as his ER specialist but one Dr. Hugh Culber?

Needless to say, Paul is head over heels. Hugh is gentle with him and has a great smile.  Paul ends up teasing him about humming along to the music playing from someone’s TV and Hugh teases right back.

Paul asks if he’s allowed to know when Hugh gets off work.  (It’s right before Paul is released, b/c he doesn’t want Hugh to feel like he has to say yes but also Paul really wants him to say yes...)  Hugh laughs and tells him the time.

Paul shows back up when Hugh is done for the day and barely manages to find the right door Hugh is leaving from and invites him over for dinner.

Here it is. massive post combining thought that happened as the battle shout fully emerged as my brand of all disciplines. It’s an ongoing conflict - using Medicines that reduce my physical anxiety cortisol which comes through as wheezing escalation attacks and very bad sleep - sleeping correctly makes me feel calmer, breathe/think clearly Medicine examples - coffee, reishi mushroom, cannabinoids, magnesium, L theanine, Lemon balm, Sleep specific - L tryptophan, Zinc, valerian root, doxylamine (unisom) -----Escapism - learning how to use mindfulness and writing to transform my self avoiding into Self Actualization ------Counterdependence - Realizing that sharing/affection and giving affirmation would make me feel good, letting me treat ppl like I deserved their attention (as a provider) not gonna stand by saying nothing while they try to trash gaming and say we are giving kids screen / media addictions, when the only things I even really know I learned from gaming, mostly online blizzard and/or adventure gaming.
