Alright not to like liveblog my breakdown on main but yesterday was a really bad day after a really bad, like, 4 months, and I've hit a bit of a breaking point and one of the only things in my life that can give is running @mdzsartreblogs , @tgcfartreblogs , @svsssartreblogs , @erhaartreblogs , @tykartreblogs , and @cnovelartreblogs , so that is what has to give. It's been a 99-out-of-100 days thankless job. A small number of people do say thank you and yall I appreciate you so much (HUGE shout-out to the artist I met at Flamecon who gifted me a zine when I said I ran these blogs, @bonesblubs you rock) but I have never done an act of fandom labor simultaneously this labor intensive yet this invisible before and, uh. It sucks. I spend an hour or more a day on this every day, if it's under 2k hours since I started the first of these in September 2020 I'd be shocked. And I do it because I love it but doing it means I don't have time or energy to do other things I love. And I really don't want to just quit, but I can't keep this up.
In a last-ditch effort to try not to just give up, I'm making the following changes:
1. Only watching one tag per fandom for the MXTX fandoms. I am going to check *only* #tgcf, #svsss, and #mdzs. Artwork posted to any other tag, I will not see unless a mutual reblogs it.
2. Reduced tagging (even more). I'm only going to tag characters and maybe overarching au type (eg, "modern au," "fantasy au"). I'll no longer tag creatures. I will continue to tag the same common trigger warnings I already tag.
3. If a work's appearance doesn't make it obvious what it is AND the tags aren't clear, I'm not going to reblog. I can't keep spending 5 minutes or more trying to figure out what I'm even looking at, scared that if I guess wrong the artist will get mad at me for mistagging their work. If I do reblog, I'll tag only the artist name and/or whatever else I can identify for sure.
4. I am no longer going to follow #link click. The fandom is just too big. I've started dreading checking it. If I was more into it and less busy I would make another spin off just for it but neither of those is true. (The art is so good, I hate to do this, but. If you love link click, highly recommend the main tag, lots of great stuff there.)
5. I will no longer tag any non-cnovel content in the art/post. Like, if someone draws, idek, Xie Lian and Marinette from Ladybug, I'm not gonna put any tags for Marinette, just for Xie Lian.
6. Basically if I run into something hard to tag or confusing or unclear, my new policy is I'm not gonna fricken bother.
I think those are everything but idefk, I cried for 3 hours last night and got 4 hours of sleep so I'm mostly fueled by exhaustion and desperation right now and my memory is even more fried than usual.
How artists can help. This is obviously all optional. You do you. But since some people might want to know what would make my life easier, I'm sharing. I'm not claiming I feel entitled to dictate how people fandom or anything like that.
1. Put the tags for the character(s) and ship(s) early in the tag list.
2. If you make art for a fandom that isn't one of the big ones (right now the only big danmei fandoms on tumblr as far as I can tell are the MXTX fandoms and maybe 2ha) I am begging you to use my tracked tag #cnovelartreblogs
3. Do mdzs art? Tag #mdzs. Do tgcf art? Tag #tgcf. Do svsss art? Tag #svsss.
4. Not only artists, but everyone, *please* stop tagging fandoms not discussed and/or depicted in your post. It's gotten to be stupid common for people to blanket the danmei fandom tags with posts only about one fandon (like, svsss-only works also being tagged mdzs and tgcf and 2ha for some damn reason). This isn't about just my sideblogs tbh this is just fandom etiquette that seems to have been forgotten or never learned by many. Tagging unrelated fandoms isn't "reach," it's annoying. People go into the #mdzs tag to see mdzs, not whatever not-mdzs stuff people have decided to tag for ~reach~, and seeing the same post in 8 tags, none of which it's related to, is so damn irritating, and makes scrolling the tags looking for content that IS relevant take that much longer. Knock it off.
Okay. I think that's as much as I'm prepared to meltdown where everyone can see. Thanks in advance everyone for your understanding, and apologies to everyone about to see this 8 times as I reblog it to each sideblog.
At least I'm not tagging it to everywhere. 🤣🤣🤣

grimmichigrimmichigrimmichi >:3333 (pairing meme)
heheh okay- so shiP IT ofc 😂 .. but here's the answers;
What made you ship it?
so... I have a very specific list of qualities I look for when it comes to my favorite male characters. And Grimmjow fit them all 😂💕
When I first watched Bleach the only thing I shipped was IchiRuki, bc naturally that was the only way to go for me tbh, but then Grimm appeared and I was obsessed. When it comes to otps for me, first I find a fave character, then I consider the possible pairings. Not any other way. And with Grimmjow... well the only option for me was Ichigo tbh.
Not to discredit any other Grimmjow ships, I've done a few of them myself, but with how passionately these two throw themselves at each other I truly couldn't look any other way. Lol
So tldr; Grimmjow's got slut potential and I dig that, and they're too into each other for me not to see "gay" plastered all over them 💫
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
Hmmm 🤔maybe how inherently feral it is, canon-wise. Also how harmonious their overall designs are together, there's nothing nicer than a pair that looks good together, at least as an artist. Also how easy they are (for me at least) to write/draw; I have a hard time focusing on one thing for long enough to get good at things (hence the many AUs lol!) so for me to have a ship I draw constantly for more than four years now... is truly astounding lmao. They helped me grow soooo much so they hold a dear dear place in my heart just bc of that alone.
And because of that last one: how easy it is to apply AUs to themmmm ;w;<33333 I can legit think of anything and make an AU out of it and not struggle too much to find the perfect place for them in it.
And also,, sort of fave sort of least fave- that it's not an overly popular ship in general (ik it's popular in the Bleach fandom itself, but rather; not popular like a ship from BNHA or JJK). Why; bc I get to have my quiet space where I draw all the ideas I want and yet have had verY few people throw insults at me for some of my darker stuff 😂 Bigger fandoms I've interacted with (as a viewer mostly) have had issues popping up left and right, people getting upset over dumb shit and letting that grow to huge proportions, "antis" everywhere... yeahhhh no thanks 😖
but also-- it gets verY quiet at times specially for someone who's so picky. Like, if I could find a fandom space like the exclusive bottom Bakugo enthusiasts I followed on twt (and even bought a whole zine about) but for GriMMJOW??? WOOF😭💕 so yeah,,, love-hate situation on this last bit lmaooo
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
A few 😂😭 everyone who's followed my art for a certain amount of time can probs tell how the 'tism really affects how I enjoy ships lmaoooo I have to enjoy them a very specific certain way so... that means I don't partake at all on a good few of the popular tropes for the ship. Some I can think of rn; damsel-in-distress!Ichigo, overly hurtful!Grimm (although this one is more old fandom I think 🤔? I remember, in a lot of fics back then, Grimmjow was portrayed a lot as this violent rapist adgdfddfdff not for me lmaoo), ofc top!Grimm, Grimmjow acting all macho relationship wise, and too much angst (I think this ship (and Ichigo in general lets be honest) can call for a lot of angst in fic so I totally get it- but ...meh, if it's not romaticized/sexualized angst, idc for it adgdfgf I don't like it when they actually suffer 😭)
OOH OH! ALSO --- making them OOC in AUs CAN be great actually (to me at least). I know a lot of people (not just here, but in any ship/fandom/etc) don't love OOC characterizations of their fave characters/ships (hence why it's a tag we use tbh) but I personally love that at times??? I won't do it all the time and all over the place... but AUs where there's space to make Grimm less violent? or Ichigo less friendly/loving??? While still within their canon character potentials--- hecC yes. >:)ccc
Also ofc; that I wish it was still common to tag ships as top-bottom like it is with HoEn/EnHo (bnha), VK/KV /trigun, KRBK/BKKR (bnha) etc or at least tag it some other way along the ship.... it would be sO much easier to filter out stuff i don't want to see instead of having to mute/block a whole person I would still love to see stuff from.
BuT I am aware most have no preference whatsoever lmaO so... yeah nothing I can do there except not follow people pfFFF 😂😭 (and wait until I find peeps with similar tastes aasdfs)
#ask meme#Ichigrimm#grimmichi#一グリ#bleach#ship ask#ikik I'm a bit crazy it's okayyy i'm aware#pffff#I also have baD anxiety so I enjoy things like a trembling chihuahua afraid-yet-excited about it's own toys pfFF#if the flavor changes I stop eating is what I'm sayinnnggg adsfsdasfsf#*sniff tests everything*#answered

Do you, or anyone actually, know where/when the '-bowl' sufix started being used in Fandom? Because I can't find any kind of origin, and surprisingly Fanlore doesn't have a article about it (as far as I checked maybe I didn't search well?). I just found and know that it's used for kinda old and relatively new fandoms, thanks to a two-year-old Reddit post.
For anyone who doesn't get/know about the '-bowl' sufix: is basically an All × One thing. For example, if you encounter 'Dekubowl' this means that Deku, the character, is shipped with everyone or that at least everyone else have a crush with Deku.
I can only think of the 'Super Bowl' (just as one comment in that Reddit post suggest) for its origin, but when we talk about Fandom culture we never know. It could have originated from anything no-related to the Super Bowl, LOL.
--
Ooh, interesting. I've never heard of this in my life, and I have no idea what a -bowl suffix is supposed to mean, even if I guess it has to do with the super bowl.
It's not surprising Fanlore doesn't have this if it's coming from BNHA or somewhere similar. Fanlore is fantastic on the history of Western "Media Fandom", zines, K/S, etc. It's much weaker in areas that OTW early adopters haven't spent as much time in.
You should write the -bowl article yourself!
--
I went into AO3's tag search and looked for 'bowl'. I found 1311 tags, 90 of them canonicals.
I'm seeing a ton of references to the Super Bowl, dust bowl AUs, pet play with pet food bowls, Dream in the fishbowl, unending uses like "I'm crying into my bowl of cereal as I write this", "bowl of honey nut feelios", "bowl of pornflakes", "me shaking the food bowl of sbi wilbur-centric angst: come get y'all's juice", etc., and plenty of references to YOI katusdon bowls. Lots of fandoms and episodes have 'bowl' in their titles.
Zeroing in on more related things, I'm seeing BNHA over and over and not much else...
EXCEPT!
Fruit bowls!
I see scattered references to "let's add him into that whole fruit bowl" and "the whole fruit bowl is here" and so on. Some of them are crack fic where everyone is a banana, but a lot of them seem to be a metaphor for "everything together".
Okay, I just spent far too much time trying to categorize tags. Out of the 'bowl' ones, about a third appear to be this kind of sense (counting by number of tags, not number of works).
Game of Thrones has a bunch, but they refer (as far as I know) to which characters will hypothetically kill each other and emerge victorious, not to group shipping.
Some tags I found, like 'edelbowl' sounded more like a group ship than an X/everyone. I also found a scattering of tags that were like 'all of them in a bowl together', which is probably related.
But mainly, what I found is that this is from BNHA and it's recent.
The other fandoms where I found it were:
Demon Slayer, Dr. STONE, Naruto, South Park, Fire Emblem, Genshin, HP, Lego Ninjago, My Next Life as a Villainess, She-Ra, Teen Wolf, Tower of God, VLD, A3! (Video Game), Assassination Classroom, Avatar, Batman, Black Clover - Tabata Yuki, Bleach, Blue Lock (Manga), BTS, Bungou Stray Dogs , Dangan Ronpa, Danny Phantom, Detective Conan, Dragon Age, Durarara!!, Fate/Grand Order, How to Train Your Dragon, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Kaiju No. 8 (Manga), LEGO Monkie Kid, Osomatsu-san, Ouran High School Host Club, Percy Jackson, SK8 the Infinity, Soul Eater, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., Toilet-bound Hanako-kun, Tokyo Revengers, Virtual Streamer Animated Characters, Warcraft, Xenoblade Chronicles 2
That's giving me a very distinctive picture of a fan who's probably in their 20s or 30s, mostly like anime and some video games, and is not the type that edits Fanlore.
There's nothing actually old here: it's recent anime and stuff that is still a megafandom, like Naruto.
I'm seeing a scattering of 'dekubowl' from 2017 and then other character tags taking off in like 2019. This is definitely a recent trend in terminology, at least on AO3.

WIP Wednesday: Snippets from Hades Lounge Summer Beach Zine
For WIP Wednesday this week (hi @johaerys-writes thanks again for the tag!) I decided to share something a bit different, which is some snippets from the piece I contributed to an upcoming Summer Beach themed zine put together by members of the Hades Lounge Discord. It’s going to be a FREE digital zine and I’ve been really impressed seeing how diverse all the works are, it was completely voluntary participation and yet so many of the characters and ships from Hades game are represented, as well as content ranging from sugary sweet to red-hot spicy. I think it will have something pretty much for everyone, so I hope you’ll check it out! Anyway I will be sure to share links when the zine is finally released <3
IN THE MEANTIME, here are two excerpts from my piece: a sorta Ghibli-esque, G-rated fluff story in which childhood-era Achilles & Patroclus summon Zagreus to the surface for a play date on the beach <3
They ambled onto the sand, and the boys’ pace began to quicken as they got closer to the water. Zagreus found he was not accustomed to how much the surface yielded here, and he had difficulty keeping up.
“The sand is hot this time of day,” Patroclus warned. “Be careful.”
Zagreus allowed his feet to sink into the soft ground. He frowned.
“It feels quite cool to me.”
Achilles turned around, studying Zagreus for a moment before he understood. He grinned again.
“It is your feet… they must be hotter than the sand… interesting.” He pointed to where his toes were buried in wet sand, getting submerged by the flow of the tide. “Come over here… try this.”
Zagreus joined him, and as soon as his feet touched the darkened sand, steam rose from the ground. Then the tide rolled in, and as the sea swallowed him up to his ankles, the water around him bubbled and roiled loudly. Along with a constant hiss, a thick white steam cloud rose up and surrounded Zagreus, blinding him, and he could only hear Achilles and Patroclus as they howled with excitement and wonder somewhere beyond the white fog.
“Should we worry that the ocean will snuff out his feet completely?” Patroclus cried out over the commotion.
“I am not sure!” Achilles shouted in reply. He called to Zagreus: “Are you well, Prince?”
Zagreus chuckled.
“I think so,” he called back. He leapt away, onto a dry patch of sand. The smoldering of his feet seemed completely unaffected. The boys stared at them as the last of the steam cleared away, their eyes wide with fascination.
~*~
After that, the three of them enjoyed their snack without speaking much—the activities had made them all rather hungry. The boys were generous hosts to Zagreus, giving him the largest portions of their bread and cheese. It was not necessary for gods to sustain themselves on anything but nectar and ambrosia (or pomegranates, as the delicacy they were considered to be in the underworld), but Zagreus found there was a simple pleasure in this humble food of mortals, enjoyed among company, and he savored each bite.
As he ate, he watched the boys carefully. Achilles’ eyes seemed to keep wandering to Patroclus as he chewed, the movements of his mouth gradually slowing down as his gaze fixated on the other boy. Patroclus, sensing it, turned to him. Achilles smiled, even as it seemed he had just then awoken from a daydream. Patroclus smiled back at him, and they continued to stare at one another until Patroclus finally turned away. His face was hidden from Achilles, but from where he sat across from them both, Zagreus could easily see his bashful expression. Achilles, for his part, smiled softly as he stared at the food in his lap, a rosy tinge appearing on his cheeks.
Little sweethearts, Zagreus thought fondly.

FAQ
Hey guys! We put together a bit of an FAQ for y'all. Please reach out and ask via dms or sending an ask if you have a question that is not on this list. Our application guidelines will be coming soon!
What ships will be permitted in this zine?
Because the zine is focused on the Flash family and their relationships with each other, all content will be Gen and we ask that all ships included in your work be canon only. This means that ships such as birdflash, bartkon, etc. will not be permitted, while wallinda, barry/iris, jess/andy, etc. will be permitted, though they should not be the central focus of the work.
Will other characters that are not in the Flashfam appear in this zine?
The main focus of this zine is Flashfam characters but other characters who are not heroes may appear as background characters . Other heroes will not be allowed to feature in any content.
Are we going to be seeing all of the Flashfam? Or will it be mostly focused on the most popular characters?
We will be trying to give all members of the Flashfam equal focus.
What characters are being featured in this zine?
Characters that we consider as part of the flash family. Below is what we are using as our full list: Barry Allen Wally West Bart Allen Jay Garrick Iris West Linda Park Irey West Jai West Jenni Ognats Dawn Allen Don Allen Meloni Thawne Thaddeus Thawne Owen Mercer Jesse Quick Jess Quick Johnny Quick Avery Ho Wallace West Max Mercury (Other characters such as Helen Claiborne or Hartley Rathaway may also appear though they will not feature in the same way the characters listed above will)
What sort of content will be in the zine?
This zine will feature fanfiction, page art, splash art, comics, and in-universe writing. We will also be producing digital and physical merch.
Are there going to be any spotlight or guest contributors? And if so who?
Yes there will be! They will be announced soon!
What is the rating of the zine?
This zine will be kept at a rating of Teen/PG-13. This means that things such as some violence, mild blood/injuries, and/or some swearing will be allowed. There will be no explicit sexual content, though some pieces may be suggestive as long as they fit comfortably within the 16+ rating. If you have any concerns during the creation period, you may contact a mod with your specific question.
How are contributors chosen?
Contributors will be chosen based on the quality and consistency of their work along with their portrayal of the flash family and related characters. Additional details on what we are looking for can be found in our guideline document.
Will proshippers be able to participate?
For the comfort and safety of our mod team and some of our contributors, we will be prohibiting individuals who ship incestuous or pedophilic content from participating. While we understand this may isolate certain fans, the comfort and safety of our mod team comes first.
Previous asks which have been sent to the blog about the zine have been tagged zine questions for ease of access.

Twelve-year-old Midoriya Izuku disappeared after getting affected by an unknown quirk. Musutafu looked for the missing kid for an entire week, but to no avail, Midoriya was gone and had left no trail behind. Until he appeared on his bed one night, as if nothing had happened, with no memory of the time he was lost. Or that is what people were left to believe because Izuku remembers everything. He remembers being a toddler again, alone in the dirty streets of Gotham. He remembers he Graysons, the couple who gave one look at the scared child lost in the labyrinth of alleyways not speaking a drop of English and immediately took him in if only so he could have a warm place to sleep until his "real" parents arrived. The Graysons named him Richard and taught him how to fly. He remembers watching his parents fall. He remembers flying again. Izuku knows everyone is dead now. Is up to him to let the name Robin live. OR Izuku was sent to the past, became a famous vigilante, and now spends his days being an edgy teen too smart for his own good. Five Years of Universe Falls Celebration!
Well ya’ll, this September will mark 5 years, half a decade since I started writing Universe Falls. And in light of that, I wanted to share that milestone with all of you with another celebration! The whole zine thing last year went a little... less great than expected, so I decided to make this announcement a lot sooner so people can get started working on submissions for it a lot sooner!
So how’s this years celebration going to work, you ask? Well its sort of similar to what was done for the 3rd year anniversary. Each week of September will have a different UF-related theme and for each of those themes, you’re free to create whatever you’d like in line with them (fics, art, HCs, general thoughts/feelings/opinions, any other creative work you’d like to submit). This year’s themes are all focused on what I consider to be the very heart of UF itself, its characters, specifically certain sets of them. Those sets (and the weeks that fall in line with them) are as follows:
Week 1 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5): Mystery Kids: We’ll start the month off celebrating everyone’s favorite plucky set of precocious youngsters! The focus here is on our beloved Mystery Kids: Dipper, Mabel, Steven, and Connie (and Pacifica if you’d like to include her in the group as well). This also includes any of the MK specific fusions: Stevonnie, Stepper, Maven, Convenper, Dipevebel, Mabonnven, Stonipbel, and so on ^_^
Week 2 (Sept. 6-12): Gems: A week to celebrate Gemkind, both good and bad, Crystal and Homeworld. Anything goes here, from Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl, to Lapis and Peridot and Jasper, to the Off Colors, the Diamonds’ Pearls, Bismuth, even Gems that haven’t appeared at all yet like Spinel or Amber! You can focus on your favorite(s) or on a bunch of them, whichever you’d like, its all free game. And once again, this includes any and all fusions, even fusions that might not happen in UF canon itself.
Week 3 (Sept. 13-19): Humans: To celebrate all of the unique and varied humans that appear throughout UF, from Stan and Ford, to Greg, to Wendy and Soos, Lars and Sadie, even the most obscure side characters are all game here! You can write or draw them interacting any way you please :)
Week 4 (Sept. 20-26) Villains: A time to honor the evil side of UF. You can have your pick of Bill Cipher himself, or maybe you favor the Great Diamond Authority instead! Or perhaps on a lesser scale you’d like to have some fun with the likes of Gideon or Jasper, even a more obscure baddie like a corrupted Gem or one of GF’s several antagonistic monsters. There’s plenty for you to choose from when it comes to UF!
Bonus week! (Sept. 27-Oct. 3) Animals/Magical/Inter-dimensional creatures: Because there’s so many other characters besides just those four groups this is kind of the catch-all for everything else. Maybe you’d like to create a tribute to our beloved pink friends Lion and Waddles? Or examine any theories about the role the Axolotl might play in UF’s future? Or draw a lovely portrait of Jheselbraum the Unswerving? You’re free to tackle whatever doesn’t fall within the above groups right here ^_^
Now, keep in mind that you’re free to work within whatever AU or set of circumstances you’d like for each of these weeks. Like say you wanted to do week one with the base UF MK, but then week 2 you wanted to do something with the Swap Crystal Gems, that’s fine! Feel free to be as free and flexible as you’d like with this. You can also do things like pay homage to your favorite pre-existing scenes from UF or make predictions to upcoming scenes and such. Also, these themes aren’t mutually exclusive. If you’d like to write a drabble that involves a little crossover between these weeks, such as the MK interacting with one of the bad guys or something, that’s perfectly fine! It’s something that can be released in either week so that’s totally up to you. :) Most ships (appropriate ones at least) are also acceptable to be factored in here.
As for the specifics when it comes to submissions, you can submit stuff either to me personally or you can post things to your own blog and tag me or PM me links since I wanna collect everyone’s work and show it off! Or if you’re on the UF Discord, I’ll be reopening the UF celebration channel for submissions to be posted there! But for now, you’ve got about a month to start planning so go ahead and get to it! I’ll be immensely looking forward to seeing what you all come up with this time around (especially in light of UF’s most recent bundle of game-changing chapters... ;) As always, if you have any questions about all this, feel free to ask! Anyone’s welcome to participate so please, don’t hesitate to let your creative juices flow! Have fun! :D

About the Project
Love in the Time of Scurvy is a full-colour physical anthology of fanworks inspired by AMC’s The Terror (2018), to be released in the fall of 2021. The main theme of the project focuses on relationships between the characters, platonic or romantic, during the show’s canon era. The works will encompass illustrations, short comics, prose, and more. The goal of the project is to create a physical fanbook of at least 100 pages that will be publicly available for purchase and distribution. If the zine does not generate enough interest during the pre-order stage, it will be distributed digitally as a PDF.
Our main zine will be a physical book with a maximum T-rating. We will also have a bonus PDF featuring NSFW content (title TBD) which will be available as an add-on to different tiers.
Pre-orders for the zine are expected to go live in July 2021. Any profit we make (minus production, shipping costs, and contributor compensation) will go to charity. At this stage we are researching potential choices within environmental and climate change focused institutions working within the Arctic regions. If you have any suggestions as to what charity we could donate to, please do let us know.
General FAQ:
What is a zine? A zine is a printed & bound magazine or fanbook created by fans for fans. It’s full of art, prose, and other fanworks. Physical zines can come with assorted merchandise items available for purchase, such as charms or stickers.
Who is behind this zine? The list of our mods can be found here.
What is the schedule for this project? Our detailed schedule can be found here.
What types of content are you looking for? We are looking for illustrations, short comics (1-4 pages), prose (between 1,500 and 2,500 words), and other fanworks. The latter can include, but are not limited to, knitting patterns, poetry, recipes, etc.
What do you mean, “relationships” ? With the title of the zine as guiding inspiration, we’re looking for any and all works that center on love between Terror characters. Friendship, romance, family, crushes, OT3s+ are all fair game.
Is this a canon-compliant zine? Will modern AUs be allowed? We are looking for works that take place during the Terror’s canon historical era, HOWEVER we are absolutely open to (and in fact encourage) canon-divergent AUs/rescue AUs/fix-its.
Will there be any sort of extras/additional merchandise? We are aiming to have a selection of different types of merchandise available alongside the zine, including (but hopefully not limited to) stickers, postcards, and keychains.
Can I contribute if I am under 18?
We will only be accepting submissions from creators who are 18 or older.
Can international creators participate, and will books be shipped internationally? Yes to both! We will have two distribution centres for the zine, one in the US and one in the UK, to cover most of the world for shipping at as low a cost as possible.
Can I contribute to Love in the Time of Scurvy anonymously or under a pseudonym? Yes! We are happy to accommodate people who would like to remain anonymous with the works they submit to the project.
Are traditional works okay? Yes! As long as you can scan them or take a photograph that will fit the technical specifications of the zine, you are welcome to submit traditional works.
How many contributor spots are you looking to fill? We don’t have a number set in stone yet, but we are looking at somewhere around 40-50 in total.
What is the selection criteria for contributors?
We will base our selection on the following factors:
Quality of provided sample works
Uniqueness of the proposed ideas for zine pieces
Proportion of each relationship within the zine
Balance between types of work (illustration/writing/other)
What does this mean? It means that first we will look at the skill level of the applicant, then at the scene/scenario(s) they are proposing, followed by how many similar ideas are being pitched, and whether they are for art or fic or other types of work. We expect that in many cases the decision will be based on the quality of provided samples and balancing relationships represented within the zine. If you have any questions regarding this, please let us know!
Will zine contributors be compensated? Yes, the goal is to provide all contributors with free copies of the zine, as well as merch. If our profits end up significantly lower than expected, contributors will be allowed to purchase at a discount instead of receiving the goods for free.
How will you be sending communications to creators? The primary point of contact will be via email, although we will be cross-posting all announcements to a contributor-specific Discord server.
What will be the final size/file specs for the physical zine? We are aiming for a B5 or A5 sized book. All art files must be delivered at 300dpi in CMYK, and submitted in either .jpeg or .psd file format. All artists will be provided with a template to work from. All prose works must be delivered in .txt, .docx, or .pdf file format. All text formatting for the zine will be handled by the zine mods to achieve uniform appearance throughout the book.
All of this sounds great, I want to contribute! Where can I sign up?
You can sign up here! :)
For other questions people have sent us, check out our #FAQ tag, or feel free to send any questions via ask or email us at [email protected]!

ngl asking for people who self-identify as "antis" is already biasing your results because the term originated from fans being defensive over getting called out (eg the types who sincerely think fandom culture is ""puritan""). fair number of people started to use the term ironically and it might be evening out but overall the post calling for responses on the survey still comes off as something written in bad faith?
I wrote a rather long and involved response and then tumblr ate it. Goshdarn.
Fair warning, this is a hyperfixation and I’m coming off of a migraine so this may not be very cogent. Please read this in the over excited tones of someone infodumping about emulsifiers, with no animosity intended.
So, tl;dr and with a lot fewer links, I’m incredibly interested by your perspective that “anti” originated as a derogatory term.
As far as I am aware, the etymological history of the word “anti” being used pejoratively is coming from some very new debates.
I’m also noting that you had no feedback regarding the content of the questions themselves, which I would be interested in hearing as I am genuinely coming from a place without censure.
The term “anti” actually is a self-descriptor that arose in the Livejournal days, where you’d tag something as “Anti ___” for other like minded people to find. (For example, my cursory google search pulled up 10 Anti Amy Lee communities on LJ).
I’m a self-confessed old. I was back in fandom before Livejournal, aaaall the way back in the Angelfire days. Webrings children! We had webrings! And guest books for you to sign!
I’m going to take a swing for the fences here Anon, so if I’m wrong please let me know, but I’m going to guess you became active as a fan in the past 5-8 years based of your use of the term puritan.
There’s actually a HUGELY new debate in fandom spaces! Previously, it was assumed that:
a) All fandom spaces are created and used by adults only.
b) If you were seeing something, it’s because you dug for it.
These assumptions were predicated upon what spaces fandoms grew in. First you had Star Trek TOS fandom, which grew in 1970s housewives kitchens. They were all friends irl, and everyone was an adult, and you actively had to reach out to other adults to talk about things. (By the way- a woman lost custody of her children in the divorce when her ex husband brought up to the judge she kept a Kirk/Spock zine under her bed. The judge ruled this as obvious signs of moral deficiency. That was in the 80s! Everyone is still alive and the parents are younger than my coworkers!)
Time: 1967-1980s. Is Anti a term? No. Who is the term used by? N/A Is fandom space considered Puritanical? No.
Then, when the internet came about, it was almost exclusively used by adults until The Eternal September. 1993 was the year that changed the internet for good, but even years after that the internet was a majority adult space. Most kids and teens didn’t have unlimited access if their parents even had a home computer in the 90s.
This is the rise of Angelfire, which were fansites all connected to each other in “rings”. You had to hunt for content. If you found something you didn’t like, well, you clicked out and went on with your day because you’d never see it again unless you really dug. This was truly the wild west, tagging did not exist and you could go from fluff to vore in the blink of an eye with nothing warning you before hand. All fannish spaces were marked “here be dragons” and attempts were made to at least adopt the “R/NC-17″ ratings on works to some limited success, depending on webmaster.
Time: 1990-1999. Is Anti a term? No. Who is the term used by? N/A Is fandom space considered Puritanical? No.
In 1999 LiveJournal arose like a leviathan, and here is where the term Anti emerges as a self descriptor. Larger communities began to form, and with them, divisions. Now, you could reach so many fans you could reach a critical mass of them for enough of them to dislike a ship. The phrase “Anti” became a self-used tag, as people tagged their works, communities, and blogs with “anti” (NB: this is at far, far smaller rates than today). Anti was first and foremost a tagging tool used and created by the people who were vehemently against something.
You could find content more easily than in the past, but you still had to put some serious elbow grease into it.
In 2007, Livejournal bans users for art "depicting minors in explicit sexual situations”. The Livejournal community explodes in anger- towards Livejournal staff. The account holders/fans view this as corporate puritanical meddling. The outrage continues as it is revealed these bans were part of a pre-sale operation to SUP Services. SUP Services, upon taking over Livejournal in 2008, proceeds to filter the topics “bisexuality, depression, faeries, girls, boys, and fanfiction”.
The Great LiveJournal Migration begins, as fans leave the site in droves.
Time: 1999-2009. Is Anti a term? Yes. Who is the term used by? People self describing, seeking to create communities based off a dislike of something. Is fandom space considered Puritanical? No.
Where do fans go? Well, in the last decade, they migrated to Tumblr and Twitter (sorry Pillowfort- you gave it a good try!)
What’s different about all of these sites? Individuals are able to create and access content streams. These are hugely impactful in how communities are formed! Because now:
a) finding content is easier
b) finding content you dislike by accident is easier
c) content you dislike requires active curation to avoid
d) truly anonymous outreach is possible and easy (for example, you anon! Isn’t it much easier to go on anon to bring up awkward or sensitive topics? I’m happy you did by the way, and that’s why I keep my anons open. It’s an important contextual tool in the online communications world!)
Now the term Anti gets sprightly. Previously, if you didn’t like content, there was nothing you could really do about it. For example, I, at the tender age of way-too-young, opened up a page of my favorite Star Trek Deep Space 9 fansite and pixel by pixel with all the loading speed of a stoned turtle a very anatomically incorrect orgy appeared.
I backed out.
1. Who could I contact? There was no “message me here” button, no way to summon any mods on Angelfire sites.
2. If I did manage to find a contact button, I would have had to admit I went onto a site that wasn’t designed to keep me safe. I knew this was a site for adults, I knew there wasn’t a way to stop it from showing something. There was no such thing as tags. I knew all of this before going in. So the assumption was, it was on me for looking. (Some may have argued it was on my parents for not supervising me- all I can say is thank GOD no one else was in the living room and my mom was around the corner in the kitchen.)
But now? On Tumblr? On Twitter? In a decade in which tagging is so easy and ubiquitous it’s expected?
Now people who describe themselves as antis start to have actual tools and social conventions to utilize.
Which leads to immediate backlash! Content creators are confused and upset- fandom spaces have been the wild west for decades, and there’s still no sherriff in town. So the immediate go-to argument is that these people who are messaging them are “puritans”.
And that’s actually an interesting argument! A huge factor in shaping the internet’s social mores in the latest decades is cleanliness for stockbrokers. Websites can become toxic to investors and to sales if they contain sexual content. Over time, corporations perfected a mechanism for “cleaning” a site for sale.
Please note there is no personal opinion or judgement in this next list, it is simply a description of corporate strategies you can read during the minute meetings of shareholders for Tumblr, Twitter, Paypal, Venmo, Facebook, Myspace, Yahoo Answers, and Livejournal.
1. Remove sex workers. Ban any sex work of any kind, deplatform, keep any money you may have been holding.
2. Remove pedophilia. This is where the jump begins between content depicting real people vs content depicting fictional characters begins.
3. Remove all sexual image content, including artwork of fictional characters.
4. Remove all sexual content, including written works. If needed, loop back to step 2 as a justification, and claim you do not have the moderators to prevent written works depicting children.
I would like to reiterate these are actual gameplans, so much so that they’ve made their way into business textbooks. (Or at least they did for my Modern Marketing & App Design classes back in the early 2010s. Venmo, of course, wasn’t mentioned, but I did read the shareholder’s speeches when they banned sex workers from the platform so I added them in the list above because it seems they’re following the same pattern.)
So you have two groups who are actively seeking to remove NSFW content from the site.
A) Corporate shareholders
B) People are upset they’re seeing NSFW content they didn’t seek out and squicks them
Now, why does this matter for the debates using the term “puritan” as an insult?
Because the reasons corporate shareholders hate NSFW material is founded in American puritanism. It’s a really interesting conflation of private sector values! And if Wall Street were in another cultural context, it would be a completely different discussion which I find fascinating!
But here’s the rub- that second group? They're not doing this for money. If there are any puritanical drives, it’s personal, not a widespread cohesive ideology driving them. HOWEVER! The section of that group that spent the early 2010s on tumblr did pick up some of the same rhetoric as puritanical talking points (which is an entirely separate discussion involving radfems, 4chan raids, fourth wave feminism, and a huge very nuanced set of influences I would love to talk about at a later time!)
These are largely fans who have “grown up” in the modern sites- no matter how old they actually are, their fandom habits and expectations have been shaped by the algorithms of these modern sites.
Now HERE‘s the fascinating bit that’s new to me! This is the interpretation of the data I’m getting, and so I’m out on a limb but I think this is a valid premise!
The major conflict in fandom at this time is a struggle over personal space online.
Content creators are getting messages telling them to stop, degrading them, following them from platform to platform.
They say “Hey! What gives- we were here first. The cardinal rule of fandom is don’t like, don’t read. Fandom space has always been understood to be adult- it’s been this way for decades! To find our content, you had to come to us! This is our space! This is my space, this is my blog! If you don’t like it, you’re not obligated to look!”
Meanwhile, at the exact same time, antis are saying “Hey! What gives- this content is appearing on my screen! That’s my space! I didn’t agree to this, I don’t like this! I want it to be as far away from me as possible! I will actively drive it away.”
This is a major cultural shift! This is a huge change and a huge source of friction! And I directly credit it to the concept of “content stream” and algorithms driving similar-content to users despite them not wanting it!
Curating your online space used to be much simpler, because there wasn’t much of it! Now with millions of users spread out over a wide age range, all feeding in to the same 4-5 websites, we are seeing people be cramped in a technically limitless space!
Now people feel that they have to go on the offense to defend themselves against content they don’t like, which is predicated upon not only the algorithms of modern websites but ALSO talking points fed from the top down of what is and what is not acceptable on various platforms.
Time: 2010-2020. Is Anti a term? Yes. Who is the term used by? People self describing, and people using it to describe others. Is fandom space considered Puritanical? Depends!
So I, a fandom ancient, a creaky thing of old HTML codes and broken tags, am watching this transformation and am wildly curious for data.
Also...I uh....I can’t believe this is the short version. My ADHD is how you say “buckwild” tonight.
Anyways...um...if anyone has read to the bottom, give me data?
#Asks&Answers#fandom#anti#fandom discourse#gosh I've been on the internet a long time...#started at the 90s now we hear#I still sometimes think about the dudes who were HELLA salty about the eternal september#they talk about it like it was a war...you bring up Usenet and they go#I was THERE Gandalf

What is a rarepair?
What is a rarepair?
As far as this zine is concerned, a “rare pair” is a ship with 400 tags or less on AO3, without filters.
Here is a list of just a few examples of rare pairs that meet this qualification: [Click] (This list is by no means exhaustive--there are hundreds of other rare pairs possible in BNHA, and we encourage you to think of all kinds of unexpected combos!)
A ship I wanted to write about/draw has more than 400 tags, but it’s definitely still rare!
We know that some ships end up tagged incorrectly or only ever show up in the background. If you want to draw/write for a ship that has more than 400 unfiltered fics on AO3, send us an ask on Tumblr or a tweet on Twitter, and we’ll be happy to take a look at the ship to confirm whether or not it will work for the zine.
Which characters/ships have been excluded from the zine?
Based on the results of our interest check, Endeavor/Enji Todoroki, All for One, Overhaul/Kai Chisaki, Dr. Ujiko, and Mineta Minoru will be excluded from this zine. That means that no ships containing any of these characters will appear in One in a Million.
Our rules also exclude all of the following:
Any ships containing a canon adult character with a canon minor character, even in aged-up or AU scenarios.
Any ships containing incest or intentionally abusive situations.
Any NSFW depictions of ships.
What about polyships?
So long as they are: 1) at 400 tags on AO3 or less, 2) do not contain any excluded characters, and 3) do not include any of the other content blocked by our rules, then yes, your favorite rare pair polyships will also be permitted!
What about third-year students? Does the no adult/minor rule still apply?
We’re not in the business of making exceptions to our zine’s no adult/minor content rule, but we do recognize that the third-year students are in a very unique situation with their current ages being right on the threshold, the manga’s timeline, and the fact that our zine will not be published until June 2020. Based on all that, we have decided to treat the third-year students as adults for the purposes of this zine. Feel free to submit apps shipping the third-year students with other third-years and characters of similar ages, but not with anyone younger or with any teachers, please!
When I applied, my rare pair had less than 400 tags, but now it has more than 400! Will my app be disqualified?
Nope, don’t worry! We know that some ships are right under the 400 limit currently. So long as the ship was below 400 when you submitted your app, you will not be disqualified if it passes 400 after the fact.

I feel some fanfic writers in my fandom need to write at least one slash fic and at least one fic about a platonic relationship because well
In my fandom, there’s two characters who I’ll call Alex and River. They have a good friendship dynamic very strong and such. The fandom loves them platonically is very against them being shipped because Minecraft roleplay fandom yadda yadda you know how it goes. I like em either being homies or boyfriends depending on what I feel like reading
The problem is some Alex & River fics tend to be written in a way that definitely doesn’t sound platonic. Which writers can say “Oh don’t you compliment your friends?” but there’s a difference between how I’d compliment my friends and how I’d compliment a partner.
if your Alex & River fic has lines where Alex calls River beautiful over and over again and where Alex looks at River’s appearance and can see why his wife married him then you can insist all day and night it’s platonic but that’s romantic as fuck. I honestly thought I misread the & tag the fic was tagged with but nope it’s supposed to be platonic
and this is such a problem in this fandom where platonic fics use the most romantic language known to man while insisting it’s platonic and I honestly think it’s because most of them are in denial. They don’t want to be outcast from the fandom for daring to ship em so instead they just slap platonic on there and call it a day

I'm sitting here sorting a stack of old Sentinel zines and cackling to myself.

Quatre hated all this waiting. And he was so tired. It took effort to connect telepathically to any of his creatures, though his bond with Iria was strong enough that it took less of his energy than with the others. Even so, he was spending an unprecedented amount of time connected with her, and it was taking a toll.
But the waiting was even worse than the exhaustion. Every day Duo spent on land was another day his secret might be discovered. Quatre was sick with worry, especially because there was only so much he could glean by watching Duo through Iria’s eyes. She couldn’t follow him inside, and even when he was outside, she couldn’t get too close too often lest she arouse suspicion.

Hi! I want to contribute but I'm not sure if many people take part who ship what I ship! (I love the idea of your project but I want to make sure I'm not "alone" with my likes, since you include all sorts of ships?)
Hi anon! We have people signed up already from all sorts of ships and all corners of the fandom (including people who don't ship anyone at all!) Of course the popular ships will always be more plentiful than the rarepairs, but we have all kinds in the project! You don't have to worry to be "alone" - we are a big group of grown-up people who have loved Sailor Moon all our lives, who grew up with Sailor Moon's messages of acceptance and friendship and inclusivity, and that is what we're celebrating. Everyone in the project so far is super friendly and welcoming, and we have people from all corners who get along very well! Also, keep in mind of course - the more you bring your own ship into the project, and maybe even invite your friends (the more the merrier!) the more your ship will be represented in the project! You can play a role in determining how much your favorite characters will appear in the Zine and eZines - with your contribution, it will be one more! Besides, we'd be sad if you didn't sign up just for this reason- we want to celebrate the fandom as a whole, and all sides are a part of it, including you! Because no matter what, you aren't alone at all. You're a Sailor Moon fan just like all of us! And if you're concerned about seeing content in the final product that you dislike - we are very conscientious about tagging content and organizing it in the final product in a way that you will not stumble across things you don't want to see as long as you read the headers.

Mobile FAQ
About the project:
Namida is an inclusive Yuri on Ice zine focusing on ‘angst’ and ‘hurt/comfort’.
Namida is the Japanese word for tears. Hurt/comfort and ‘angst’ is a common trope in fan works… for good reason! Both making and creating work with an emotional impact can be a helpful way to process or release emotions. Sometimes we all need a good cry.
Inclusive means that everyone who submits and application will be able to participate in the zine. There will be no judging. Because of the scale of this project, participants will not be paid. Their work will be considered a donation, and all sales of the zine will benefit The Trevor Project.
About The Charity:
The Trevor Project is a non-profit phone and chat suicide prevention hotline for LGTBIA+ youth based in the United States.
The Trevor Project is rated 4 out of 4 stars on CharityNavigator.com
More from Charitynavigator.org:
The Trevor Project is the leading and only accredited national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) young people under the age of 25.
The Trevor Project offers a suite of crisis intervention and suicide prevention programs, including TrevorLifeline, TrevorText, and TrevorChat as well as a peer-to-peer social network support for LGBTQ young people under the age of 25, TrevorSpace. Trevor also offers an education program with resources for youth-serving adults and organizations, a legislative advocacy department fighting for pro-LGBTQ legislation and against anti-LGBTQ rhetoric/policy positions, and conducts research to discover the most effective means to help young LGBTQ people in crisis and end suicide.
If you or someone you know is feeling hopeless or suicidal, our Trevor Lifeline crisis counselors are available 24/7/365 at 866.488.7386. www.TheTrevorProject.org
Who are the Mods?
@creme13rulee and her IRL best friend @imandarr (on Twitter) and TheBookeWyrme
I have published @wordstudyzine. Outside of YOI, I’ve raised over $1200 running past events (prom and another dance) for Washingtonstuck, which at the time was a 1000+ member Homestuck fan group in my home state. I formerly was on the mod team. I’ve also organized one-day cons (Pancon) in Seattle and a few Christmas parties in the past. I love planning events! I have not planned in-person events lately as I work in a Title 1 (high-poverty) special needs classroom and my spare cash for rental has been going to activities for my kiddos.
My etsy is here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/cremebrulee My tumblr, Ao3 and twitter are all under @creme13rulee @mandarr has been my best friend for over a decade. She’s spent her entire life volunteering and working to help others. She is now a board member of a youth service organization we are both past members of. She is a traditional artist and has had her art featured at Jet City Comic Show, local murals and Ever free, a MLP convention. She is an amazing leader, hard worker and my platonic better half. I dragged her into the YOI fandom. She is currently an artist for multiple writers in the Victuuri Fluff bang and has made art for my fic Deep Within my Bones and co-written a fanfic with me.
You can find her on Twitter and Facebook (Mandarrart) and her website here http://www.visualartsservices.com

How will the zine work?
Namida will be primarily released as a PDF sold on our bigcartel website. 100% of the proceeds will go toward the Trevor Project.
The zine will also be available in print through Lulu.com.
To keep it affordable, the zine will be divided into ‘volumes’ of roughly 100 pages. Participants will be notified of which volume their piece will be included in. Those participating in the zine will be able to buy a copy at-cost from Lulu.com. The general public will be able to buy print copies directly from Lulu.com with a set donation added to the cost.
Why is the print version through lulu.com?
Lulu.com is a Print-on-Demand marketplace we have used in the past. Using Lulu.com enables us to run a large project and still enable participants to see their own work in print form.
People who buy from Lulu.com will be able to get their book shipped within 7 business days at a cheaper shipping rate than what is available to the public.
Using the Marketplace also allows the zine to collect money for the Trevor Project without having to worry about preorder issues with Paypal that other projects have encountered in the past.
Will there be merch?
Due to the potential scale of an open zine, we are not planning to offer merch as part of the project. We encourage you to check out any shops that zine participants may own!
General Participant Requirements/Rules:
Fiction (and art) can be cathartic to read/see. The main idea of the zine is to get a cry and feel good at the end. Hurt/comfort angst, or ‘angst with a happy ending’ is encouraged.
If there is enough interest, there will be a section for works that may not have a guaranteed happy ending.
Being dark for the sake of being dark is discouraged. Please explore difficult themes carefully and with respect.
Pieces with tough subject matter should be ‘tagged’ with appropriate warnings, even if they may spoil the story.
Any characters in romantic or explicit/sexual situations must be obviously 18 years or over [by age and appearance.]
No non-con (non-consensual)/rape, underage or child abuse please.
We reserve the right to ask you to change your idea, or refrain from adding it to the project if it is deemed inappropriate.
Writer requirements:
Any type of previously unpublished prose up to 5,000 words.(No minimum)
Word count can be split between pieces (e.g. poems) but they should be cohesive (belong to each other) and be a stand alone story. (No continuation or prequels to existing fanfic)
Artist requirements:
8.5x11/ Letter size format (2550 pixels wide and 3300 pixels tall)
300 DPI digital art or high-quality scan/photo
Formatted for RBG
Comics -> 5 pages or less, formatted as above
Are we allowed to do AU (Alternate Universes?)
Yes!
Can we collaborate?
Yes! There will be a channel for collabing in the Discord. It will be up to participants to find someone to work with by Check-in 1.
Can I sign up as a writer and artist?
Yes. You can have both roles!
What pairings/ships can we do?
Namida is open to all pairings/ships, as long as any romantic/explicit content features characters at least 18 years old or older.
How can I apply? Applications will open January 1st 2019 and close on the 31st at this link:
https://goo.gl/forms/F799OXkht2RD8fi23
How do I know you got my application?
You should receive a confirmation email from Google forms. Occasionally Google acts up. If you do not get an email feel free to DM/email us to check. Please include the email/username you used to apply!
Do I have to submit a sample/ spotlight piece?
Since it is a open project, there is no judging. The link you submit is a highlight of your favorite work to be featured along with your social media information.
It is not required. If you don’t submit a link or otherwise contact us, I will assume you do not want a spotlight post. You will still be announced as a contributor and featured in the zine regardless!
What are the requirements for the spotlight?
YOI Related, Safe for Work and easily copied/downloaded from the link. Work can be published or unpublished. If its unpublished (not on Ao3 or FF.net) then we will post it in whole on the spotlight piece.)

How to Organize a Zine 101 #3
Hello~
I already talked about figuring out your zine and the zine’s schedule as well as what you should bring with you to successfully manage a zine.
I think the next step should be building up
Web Presence
I already talked a wee lil bit about it in Part 1 but I think I should elaborate a bit more on it as it’s basically the backbone of almost every fanzine nowadays.
A small disclaimer: Please take everything with a certain grain of salt as I am not a professional when it comes to social media managment. These are just some pointers I consider useful/helpful as they worked for me or other zines I had a brief overview of.
Where to post?
First of all, think about what platforms you want to use, and get familiar with them if you aren’t already. Learn “the way” of it to know which rules/guidelines to follow, because not every platform is the same in tonality or which kind of content spreads fastest.
The most common platforms that I’ve found to work with zines pretty well are Twitter and Tumblr. As both are available as apps for practically almost every phone, it’s also easy to check and keep updated with when you’re on your way.
Tumblr is quite interesting because it’s bascially like a website (and yes, you should keep in mind that the mobile version doesn’t support tumblr sites) and you can conveniently store all info to your zine, answer questions in public, and reblog post e.g. previews of zine entries. It’s easy to spread information quickly if you use the correct tags and post them in the best time frames for your audience.
Twitter is kind of like a news ticker, or gets used by many like this. It’s easier to engage with people and “spread the word” by tagging people who might be interested in the zine.
Also, think about where you as a manager have the bigger following so you can forward e.g. tweets or posts or make your own announcements about the zine to your following and potential customers.
What to post?
Obvious things are announcements like schedules, FAQ, details on the zine, application progress, previews, contributor lists, links to online shops, etc. This is kind of basic together with updates like if important e-mails to the contributors went out etc.
However, this isn’t everything at all. What I found great in other zines (which we completely ignored for our zine and I think that’s a very sad thing actually) was having specific dates (in fandoms stuff like characters’ birthdays, anniversaries etc.) or more general things like widespread holidays, or “event dates” (? - like world women’s day, labour day, you get the twist) that somehow correlate to your zine. For example, one zine I participated in was about the girls of a certain fandom, so they chose the Day of the Girl to start previews to kickstart the preorder phase - and I really loved that! It brings everything in another perspective because it’s not just a zine for a few little nerds to enjoy, but it conveys a much more pronounced message that way. Including those kind of dates, whether it’s just a small post like “Happy New Year” with a small update on the zine progress, or a special sale because it’s xy character’s birthday and it happens to also fall perfectly into your schedule, it just makes your zine feel more honest and considerate of their passion for the zine’s content. It isn’t mendatory, but it definitely has a more lasting impression.
Also, you might want to think about what medium you want to choose - photos/pictures generally get more attention as it is highly visual (plus it’s easier to find on a twitter accound for example) and can be a nice addition to your text. This is where you definitely should think about some kind of corporate design for your zine that is eye-catching enough to get attention from a lot of people and still matches tone and intention of the zine. Gifs may give a post a bit more animated, funny, or simply emotional expression, so having a few sets of gifs/images (perhaps from the source material if it’s a fan zine) handy isn’t such a bad idea. It’s something we didn’t have and I basically have only regret about it.
How?
You also might think about the tonality of how you appear on the zine’s social media. Generally, fandoms are a rather friendly and casual place to be, so you can slip a small joke or something like that into your posts, however, you shouldn’t go all “LOLZ dat boi xDDDDDD” because you still want people to take you seriously and (if it’s a for-buy zine) pay real money for your zine. Keep a certain level of professionalism but don’t have a complete stick up your butt is all I’m saying as you don’t want to alienate people because of one thing or the other.
If you’re modding the zine with several mods (which I highly recommend!), also add signatures at the end of each post (we did it with -Mod [our name]) so it’s easier to clear up misunderstandings etc. as people know who they’re talking to and maybe one mod just didn’t read the memo or something. With tweets it’s just wasting precious characters but on tumblr you aren’t limited at all.
Also remember tagging: It feels like a science itself, and partly it is. First, tag what it’s about. You need to reach the fans, so if it’s about a certain ship or characters, tag those. Tag the fandom, and, very important, tag that it’s a zine. having those covered at first makes you pop up in e.g. tumblr search more as tumblr had changed that only the first 5 tags will be where you’ll appear. Some blogs which collect zine posts have a specific tag they’re tracking, so including some of these comes in quite handy. The rest is mainly to maintain a system on your blog, which everyone needs to figure out themselves. Tagging on twitter is kind of different as you have a limit, I would always go with ships/content first, then perhaps fandom, and zine only if you’ve got some characters to kill. Also please don’t use completely unrelated tags only because they’re currently trending - this is just plain annoying and it’s more likely that people will ignore you instead of gaining some interest in your project.
When?
Do your research on what times are the best to post your content to get your target audience, especially as shipping can be very expensive so you want to have national interest in first place. Every social media has their own specific timeframes where content goes viral the fastest. There is no 100% correct formular, but some tendencies at least, so you can help your luck out a little bit.
Grooming Your Media
To most social media, the key to success is consistency, so you definitely shouldn’t sleep on this. Luckily, social media are (except for most forums but then again your phone usually also has a web browser) usually available as app version, meaning you’re quick to responst or check in. - That’s what you usually think but truth be told, apps also don’t always work perfectly, and especially the tumblr app is known to be rather wonky. I also (this is a personal preference, though) find it easier to compose posts and pick the right pictures on my computer, so if you’re the same way as I, I would advise you to calculate half an hour up to maybe 3 per day/every two days to check in on all your zine’s accounts. It depends a bit on how active the current phase is and how many questions/inquiries people are sending your way.
Tumblr luckily has the queue option, and it definitely saves you a lot of time when you need to bring up an important post regularly. Through the queue, the blog also stays more active, thus has likely more traffic or is simply more noticible as it stays fresh in mind.
Twitter, however, doesn’t have this function (or I’m definitely not aware of it), and, truth be told, also isn’t concipated for this kind of thing. There aren’t really many updates you can post during certain phases of the zine, but there might help the above mentioned dates you might want to keep in mind. Tweeting about the occassion and connecting it with your zine might raise interest and more traffic on your account. And yes, then there are the really busy phases where you simply can’t keep up with social media as the zine demands all your attention. However, sometimes people just want to know how busy you are, so tweet it! A sentence or two are probably enough, and then you’re basically good to go for the day. Just remember to retweet your tweet during your breaks.
And, again, checking on your media should be a regular thing because waiting for an answer for 1-2 days is a different thing than a month or so later (this accidentally happened to us because we didn’t get a notification), so don’t just check “does the system signal me that there are new messages” but actually go into all possible messaging systems directly to check because sometimes tech is a bit wonky. (Also check the message requests!!!)
To maintain a certain level of activity can be a pretty tough job and by now I’m actually inclined to believe that one of the mods should be responsible solely for the social media management while the others work on the actual zine. However, I can’t say I’ve had experience with handling stuff like this that way. It definitely would have gotten a lot of pressure off my shoulders (I mean there’s a reason why companies have a special department handling all this stuff.)
Also, when I say “post regularly,” you can determine what is regular. This can be 24/7, every other day, or once a week, maybe also every two weeks but I suppose no less than that or people might forget you even exist. It’s just important to keep that schedule up so people can build a habit of expecting and getting to see a new post at a certain time.
It feels a bit hypocritic for me to talk about this topic because I think I’m not doing a very great job at it myseld simply because I easily neglect stuff like this, but again this small series is about learning from our/my mistakes so you don’t have to make them with your zines.
Thank you for reading, I hope I’ll find the time to write the next installment soon!
