your lovely usual at the cafe, akaashi keiji came inside as the bell above the door announced his arrival. he kindly smiled at you and took his place in his favorite spot. he always chose that corner away from the windows and the loud chatter in the cafe, where the 3 month old little ginger kitten liked to sleep in his tiny basket. he pet the cat and took out his laptop, putting it on his legs as he was sitting on a soft cushion on the floor next to the cat, making it purr sweetly at the affection.
taking the order list with you, you made your way to him. despite the sound of your footsteps in the silent corner, he didn't hear you until you softly called out his name.
"mr. akaashi?" he turned his back and smiled.
"please, just keiji."
"alright, keiji, welcome back! it's always great to see you here, that little baby misses you." you grinned and he turned back to the cat, picking it up and touching his tiny nose.
"he's growing so fast, he won't be able to fit in my palm in a few weeks." he pouted at the small creature in his hand. he was too cute.
"do you want to order now or should i leave you guys alone?" you gestured to the cat.
"oh yeah, sorry. can i just get the usual americano? hot, please." he uttered looking up at you with a smile as bright as the sun.
"want a dessert with that? i just tried a new cheesecake recipe today!"
"if you did it, then of course i want it. i love trying your stuff." he put the sleepy cat back in his basket which caused it to meow sadly but he had to finish editing this new episode by tonight for the manga magazine.
"thank you! i'll be right back with those!" you went and brought him his coffee and cheesecake, along with an iced drink for yourself.
"i don't understand how you can drink hot coffee in the middle of july." you chuckled as you sat down near him on a different cushion, although they are pretty huge for one person. he is just a regular at the shop after all, you should probably keep your distance in case it disturbs him.
"if you really want me to, remind me to try an iced one next time." he said without turning his head, too concentrated on his work. you sipped some of your own drink as you watched him fix spelling mistakes and add little doodles or words on the pages. he looked too good to be true. how could someone appear so angelic while simply pushing buttons on their keyboard?
you first met akaashi while he was working on the new episode of your new favorite manga that started coming out recently and you couldn't help but ask if he was the writer himself. he told you he was just the editor in the magazine and let you look through the new episode a day early from everyone else, which would probably cost him his job if his boss found out. but he thought of himself as a people reader, and he just felt like he could trust you.
this became a routine for you two for the past 2 months. he would purposely wait to come until your break was nearing so that you could both prepare his drink and sit down with him afterwards. your little secret, the advantage of seeing the episodes early, wasn't one sided. you would make him try new recipes you found or came up with in exchange. it was a win-win situation so he accepted. it meant he could eat delicious treats made by the barista he started to feel flustered around, and you could get honest feedback about your cooking. him being an editor made the honest feedback part much better.
you were deep in thought, the ice in your drink long melted as you stared at him. it probably took a few calls of your name for you to snap out of it, as he seemed both worried and intrigued by your look.
"sorry, i zoned out." he smiled, "it's okay, i was just wondering if there was something on my face i couldn't see. you seemed like you were staring at me." he bit back a grin.
"i was not. your face is completely fine. very fine." you punched yourself mentally after that, but at least you managed to make the man laugh.
oh, his laugh, it made your whole day better. it was a blessing to hear. you knew it was stupid to fall for a customer at your shop who could stop coming anytime and you'd possibly never see him again if he did, but the heart wants what it wants.
"i really like it."
"the coffee or the cheesecake?" you asked, by the looks of it, he seemed to have liked both, as he finished both of them completely.
"both. the cheesecake's really nice. you should try another flavor as well. this'll become a best seller in no time." you smiled in victory, despite trying so many times and even ruining an attempt, you finally made it perfectly.
"thank you, want another slice?" he shook his head.
"need to control the sugar i eat, sorry. or else i get too greedy and empty my candy storage at home." now it was his turn to make you laugh.
"i would love to see you munching on sweets." you giggled, "are you still planning to adopt him next month?" you pointed at the cat.
"yeah, i even bought a bed already. it's too big for him now, but he'll grow into it." he petted the yawning kitten's head.
"i'll miss him after he's gone. he's my favorite too." you smiled sadly, rubbing his stomach and tickling him, which made him shake his butt funnily.
"you could always come visit him at my apartment?" akaashi suggested. seeing the surprised look on your face, he added, "if you want, of course. i could also get a carrier and bring him here with me."
"i wouldn't want you to go through the trouble. i'd like to come visit him, as long as you're comfortable." he smiled, letting go of the breath he was unintentionally holding.
"of course, you can come anytime you want."
he finally pressed send on the email to his boss with the finished manga episode and closed his laptop. "so, it's a date?" he had a little smirk he was trying to hide.
"yeah, it's a date. come back sooner, he'll miss you again." you smiled and he reached out for your hand next to him.
"i will, i'll miss you too." he squeezed your hand a bit and left after turning back to beam at you one last time, leaving you all nervous by yourself with the kitten now up and begging you for food.

Assorted haikyuu college/university AU headcanons just because:
— oikawa somehow makes it onto the cover photo of the university’s brochure every single year and it pisses off iwaizumi more and more every year
— literally nobody understands how oikawa does it
— before kageyama and hinata even get introduced, they have an unspoken race to the death to get to their shared lecture hall first every morning
— daichi is a part time supervisor at the campus coffee shop and he runs it like the navy, he does NOT play about being a barista
— suga is the only one brave enough to order ridiculously complicated coffee & actually he does it on purpose to pester daichi, he doesn’t even like the coffee
— nishinoya is the main campus plug and he exclusively sells terrible weed, like straight up sticks and leaves
— he tried to sell to hinata on his first day of uni & hinata nearly called the police and tried to report noya to a trusted adult after
— the trusted adult is daichi
— tanaka is noya’s most loyal customer, naturally
— kuroo and bokuto have a reputation for always trying to outdrink eachother at the campus’ most popular bar, and they both end up passed out and neither ever remembers who technically won
— kenma & akaashi eventually had to unionise and refuse to take care of either of them when they’re hungover afterwards

for your event - a steamy 69 with akaashi from haikyuu
a steamy college!au number 69 + akaashi keiji
Tumblr media
“DO YOU WANT ME TO SET YOU FREE?”
the partner assignment you had to do wasn't too difficult. akaashi was a good partner - an easy person to get along with and a smart one, too. but, the stress you had piled up and up and up and-
you sighed once more, hand rubbing your forehead harshly.
akaashi peers at you over the rim of his glasses. he takes a sip of the drink he has before biting on his bottom lip. "everything alright, name?"
smiling his way, you hope it looks sincere and less tense than it feels. "jus' fine, 'kaashi. hoping i can sleep well when i get home, is all."
akaashi shifts, clearing his throat as his knee knocks against yours. "i could- i mean-" akaashi sighs, "i can help you relax."
he looks up at you from under his lashes, leaning a little closer. just close enough so that his nose brushes against your cheek. it's a bad idea honestly - this is a man who you see everyday ; who you trade papers with and walk to the coffee shop with.
but it's also the best idea. you barely knew akaashi - you couldn't name his favorite food or color ; your friend circles were different. yet, you knew he made you feel safe - warm.
tentative fingers trail onto your own, softly brushing against your knuckles. your eyes meet his and you ignore the flush that's crawling up your neck - ignore the way your mouth grows dry. “if you want me to?”
"yeah," you breathe. you brush your lips against his before settling your face into the crease of his neck. "would like you to help, please."
you can feel as akaashi grins, his fingers brushing against the bottom of your shirt. cold fingers creep under, causing your back to straighten at the chill. hands plant onto your hips, pulling you closer and onto his lap.
akaashi breathes out, tickling the base of your neck with small kisses before he pulls away. "s'all you had to say baby."

back between villages (akaashi keiji x y/n)
Tumblr media
- ex to friends au, both of them are 24 years old, a little bit angsty, and fluff. ending's kinda rushed im so sorry:(
- 1.5k words
(i wrote this when i was sobbing to this song)
taglist : open!
The cold breeze of autumn is starting to hit your face as you walk down the streets of your old neighbourhood. You just finished your final semester in university, and while waiting for an internship, you came back here to visit a friend from high school.
As you let your steps walk down the neighbourhood, you suddenly stopped as you saw the small food stall by the road.
"Wow, this place is still here?" You thought. The memories of you and your friends will eat here every day after school because it's cheap and delicious. The aunt who owned this shop with her husband was so sweet too. It made you smile as you walked slowly towards the shop.
The shop is still bustling with customers, mostly teenagers from your old school. You opened the door and the ring bells. You looked around to see the same warm and cosy interior is still here, just a little bit of renovation here and there.
As you looked around, you were disrupted by a voice. "Oh child, is that you?" You turned your head towards the voice and saw the aunt, smiling at you like she used to smile a few years ago.
You smiled back at her and embraced her hands. "Yes, this is me, y/n. It seems you have not forgotten me."
You laughed a little as the aunt brought you to the seat at the nearby table. "How can I forget you when you and your friends used to be the loudest in here?" She said, and you laughed, remembering how this shop will be full of laughter that came from your friend group alone.
"What would you like to eat? I will make it for you." The aunt offered free food, but I refused, politely, of course. "Ah, I'm just passing through, aunt. I happened to see how your shop is still busy after all these years; how lucky!" You exclaimed.
After seconds passed, your eyes started to wander around, probably to search for a familiar silhouette of her husband. "Where's uncle? Is he working today?" You asked as your eyes focused on her back.
Suddenly, her expression became gloomy. "Ah... child, he died last year because of lung cancer. Your friends never told you?"
Your smile disappeared, and guilt started to swallow you. "I'm sorry... I didn't know.. condolences to you." You bite your lips, feeling sad and thinking about how you never managed to find out what's happening in your hometown after you graduated.
"It's okay; he had no regrets. His last wish was to renovate this shop, and his wish was granted. He is happy, and so am I." She let out a sigh and looked around the shop, built from the memories of her and her husband, built from love.
You smiled softly hearing that he lived his life to the fullest and stayed happy till the end of his breath. "I adore both of you so much, you know that." You said before continuing. "You both love each other so much; I can see that. Please always be happy for him."
The aunt smiled and hugged you, which caught you off guard, but you returned her warm hug. It feels nice and homely. You both talked for a bit and bid goodbye.
As you walked for a few minutes, you stopped at a nearby park to rest for a few minutes. As you were walking to a coffee truck to buy a drink, your phone buzzed in your pocket. You reached for it to see a message that was sent by your friend, Alisa.
Hello y/n, I'm sorry, but there's been an emergency!!! I need to go home asap, so sorry i can't make it today :( I'll make it up to you ! Sorry again, y/n !
You were speechless by the message, but nonetheless, it's not like you can force her or something. You put back your phone inside your pocket and ordered an iced hazelnut latte. You paid for your drink and went to search for a bench.
As you looked around, you spotted a bench under the shade from a tree. You hurriedly walked there so that no one would get to sit there first before you. You secured your seat, and you sighed softly as you took your seat.
"I hope no birds will poop on me, please. " You said as you looked above at the trees, and thankfully there were no birds. You take a sip of your drink while enjoying the lake in front of you. There were a few ducks swimming, and a couple giving them bread crumbs to eat.
Suddenly you were reminded of this one memory that you had hid behind your brain for years, but managed to slip out today. You used to be in that spot, with your boyfriend— well, ex boyfriend now— feeding the ducks.
It was a bittersweet memory. His name is... what was it? Akaashi Keiji. Keiji. He's a nice man, a nice partner, and a funny friend. You both broke up because of different opinions on study pathways and different future preferences. But you broke up on good terms. It should be okay.
Right?
But it was never okay. Somehow, a good breakup hurts much more than a bad breakup. It made you wonder, What went wrong? What did you lack, or what could you do to prevent it from happening?
You sighed as you remembered all of those memories. You wished you could turn back time to make the right choices, but there weren't any "right" choices; it's all written down by destiny.
Without realising it, your eyes got teary as you kept reminiscing about those bittersweet memories, but it was all in the past. You quickly wiped those tears and grabbed your bag to maybe get away from there before you get more overwhelmed by the memories.
As you turned around, you accidentally felt like you hit someone. Your things scattered out from your bag onto freshly cut grass.
"Sorry, oh my gosh, I am so sorry." You dropped down to pick up your things and stuff them into your bag before standing back up. "I didn't see you there. I am so sorry—". This very familiar face right in front of you.
The universe is being rough on you today. Or being helpful.
You stared at the man standing right in front of you. You know that face very well. "Keiji....".
He stared back at you, surprised to see your face too. "Y/n.. what are you doing here?". He asked, but his eyes are busy scanning your face, which he hasn't seen in so long. He felt the strings in his heart tugging, unsure if it's because of happiness or sadness.
Ever since you both broke up right after graduation, he had lost contact with you. And it stayed like that for years, and now, here you are. Showing up in front of him on a random day, still gorgeous but a more mature version of you. He couldn't stop staring at you, but he's trying to not be a freak after so long.
"I am here to visit home. And, was supposed to meet up with Alisa, but she suddenly has an urgent matter to attend to. ". You replied while still looking at his face. His features have grown more mature, making him look more handsome than before. You won't deny it.
"Ah, that's why."
Both of you stood there awkwardly in silence, thinking how to continue this conversation.
"How are you, y/n?" Keiji asked the question towards you. He gestured to the bench to invite you to sit together. You took a seat and set down your bad beside you. You look at the ducks swimming not far from where you both were.
"I'm doing fine. A little busy with internship preparation  though.". You said before looking at him. "How about you, Keiji?". He smiled, kicking the stones near his feet.
"Normal, currently having my internship at my friend's company. " "That's wonderful." You said while looking at him.
Somehow the atmosphere between both of you is calming and peaceful, even though you were lovers before, but you were friends first. And maybe friends also now.
"I missed you." Keiji said casually while staring at your face, and he smiled softly. Of course he missed you, he misses you every single day. His mind is full of you ever since he first met you, and you never left his mind even once.
You laughed a little when he uttered those words. "You haven't changed a bit. " You smiled while looking at him.
"Keiji, what do you think of, starting again as friends?" You suggested the idea to Keiji. It's never wrong to start again, right? After all, you both are also friends but too careless to move on to a relationship.
The only right way is to start over, it won't hurt. "I'm in, y/n. ". You both giggled and looked at the lake scenery.
Maybe it will work this time, both of you know and want it, but this time, more careful steps are going to be taken.
"Are you not going to say you miss me back?""Shut up, Keiji; of course I miss you."

Hi! Me again! Could I please get a romantic matchup this time? I don't mind whether they're long or short (whatever's easiest for you).
Pronouns: She/Her
Sexuality: Straight
Age: 21
Zodiac Sign: Gemini
MBTI: INFJ-A
Ennegram: 5w6
There aren't any characters I particularly don't want to be matched with.
Personality: I'm pretty quiet in social settings but if someone talks to me first, I can keep a conversation going. I will occasionally go up to someone to initial a conversation but not very often. With people that I'm close with, I'm very open and sarcastic. I have a high sense of self worth but as part of that, I set very high standards for myself. I also usually meet those standards though. People say I have a good poker face/a scary glare but I've never seen it. People also say I look like someone who "knows what they're doing".
Love Languages: Words of affirmation (written, not spoken) and quality time (giving) and quality time and acts of service (receiving)
Likes/Hobbies: Reading, writing, anime, video games, and listening to music (musicals, pop, and rock typically but I have a pretty broad style). I want to be a fantasy writer and I am currently studying an English major at university.
Dislikes: Spiders (deathly afraid of those), being forgotten when I'm gone, and disappointing those who I care about. I'm also not too fond of really deep water.
What I look for in a partner: Someone honest and caring. Someone who treats me the way I deserve to be treated. I don't really have a preference on appearance; personality is far more important to me. Hopefully I've put a good amount of useful information! I hope you have a lovely day and that life is treating you kindly!
Ideal Date: My ideal date would probably be a going to a cafe and getting afternoon tea before walking around and talking for a bit. Something where we can get to know each other better.
Hopefully I've put a good amount of useful information! I hope you have a lovely day and that life is treating you kindly!

🥛 i feel like your personality is very similar to that of akaashi's: you're both introverts but aren't opposed to having a conversation; you can be sarcastic with your friends; and you have high expectations for yourself
🥛 akaashi is very good at words of affirmation and acts of service
🥛 definition of a gentleman and princess treatment lol
🥛 akaashi is honest and caring and wouldn't hesitate to always take care of you or protect you
🥛 like he'd definitely be in charge of getting rid of the spiders in the house since you're scared of them lol
🥛 you would definitely leave each other cute notes or messages around the house when one of you needs a pick-me-up
🥛 since akaashi is a big overthinker sometimes he needs a bit of comfort and encouragement
🥛 and ofc he'll always be there to provide that for you too
🥛 post-timeskip, he works as an editor, so i'm assuming he studied literature in college and had a great time doing it
🥛 so you'd definitely be able to connect over your love of books and literature
🥛 akaashi would be your biggest supporter and always offer to edit or help you write essays or other assignments
🥛 he'd also always read any drafts of things you've written on your own time
🥛 akaashi on a cafe date 🤌
🥛 the coffee shop au suits him so well
🥛 but i definitely think he prefers tea over coffee which is nice
🥛 and he'd also want some time to walk around and get to know you properly on a first date
runner up for you was iwaizumi hajime!

A/N: hi eren! second part of our matchup exchange 🫶 i hope you liked it and thank you for doing the exchange with me!

GRR!! HELO!!! IM HERE W ☕💘🎞️ <33
🥹👐🏼 WELLLL WELL okay.. i'm going to talk Bokuto because i have been fondly thinking of him recently...
☕️: What are the most common plots of shipping fics between you and your f/o?
ooh well.. i see our ship as very friendly-romantic. like, best friends who then fell in love.. so, i think there would be a lot of romantic tropes along the lines of "who fell first / who fell harder" speculation (the real answer is that i fell first and he fell harder). also, when challengers came out, there were challenger-au fics with akaashi involved 🙊 (the ones that put kuroo in are better though..).
💘: Why would people love your ship? Why would people dislike your ship? How might it start debates?
since we're still like Best friends first and foremost, i think people love seeing our friendship and partnership - we graduated together etc. and those scenes in the future montages are very beautiful :3 there's like, a mild minority of people who have the whole "grr distracting from his Craft!" mentality about it but it's fine.
but also there's a few panels showing that i dress him for game days and people ferociously debate the drip or drown of each pre-game pic going to the locker room (also idk if they do that in volleyball but they do now in my mind).
🎞️: What ‘canon’ scenes would the fandom point to as evidence for the validity of your ship?
mmm any time that we have good banter together, and the quotes are great fic titles, especially being more dramatic out of context for the more serious fics. but i think mostly there's these like, little scenes or background glimpses where you see us just hanging out.. standing together looking at someone's phone; sitting leaning heads on each other on the first train at 4am; us in sunglasses running into a coffee shop... innocent and friendly context enough but still Speculative!
selfship canon ask game!

coffee shop
Tumblr media
ft.: akaashi x reader
word count: ~2.2k words
a/n: this is my second entry (a little university au with a few taylor swift lyrics thrown in hehe) for @kyopmi's the four seasons collab! thank you again mizu for letting me join <3
Tumblr media
First Winter: “‘Cause all I know is we said, ‘Hello’/ And your eyes look like coming home/ All I know is a simple name/ And everything has changed”
Outside the window beside him, Akaashi can see the university campus slowly being blanketed in white: delicate snowflakes falling from the light gray skies and gently landing on the barren trees, on the pavement, and on the heads of other students as they attempt to escape the cold wind on this Sunday evening.
Akaashi takes a sip of his bitter coffee then sets the mug down next to his laptop and he notices how messy the table has become. It is cluttered with his notes and books, which he would usually feel a bit self-conscious about. However, practically all the tables in the quaint coffee shop have been taken over by stressed students with a mountain of assessments and exams looming over them.
Fortunately, Akaashi doesn’t feel overwhelmed yet. So far, he’s successfully planned and organized his time wisely. As for today, all he has scheduled is reviewing for an exam and hopefully the revision will instill in him the confidence he needs to ace it tomorrow.
With renewed focus, the raven-haired boy picks up a stack of his notes and starts reading them, occasionally parting his lips to quietly repeat some important information to himself. He becomes so lost in memorizing all the little details that he is oblivious to the sudden presence hovering by his table.
He doesn’t even notice you when you clear your throat in an attempt to grab his attention.
“Hello? Akaashi?” you meekly greet, hoping you don’t sound and look as awkward as you feel.
Your fellow first-year classmate looks up at you slightly startled, his ocean-blue eyes wide behind his black framed glasses. He wasn’t expecting to see you, his crush that he’s never mustered the courage to talk to before.
It wasn’t like you had an intimidating aura about you. You seem very friendly, sweet, and approachable. To Akaashi, though, this somehow made you even more scary to talk to and he ended up wasting weeks thinking of ways to start a conversation with you. But it looks like all that mental preparation was for nothing because here you are, actually speaking to him.
“Sorry Y/N, I didn’t see you there,” Akaashi apologizes after snapping out his thoughts, nervously adjusting his glasses on his face.
“No no, I’m sorry for interrupting,” you assure him, shaking your head vigorously, causing a few snowflakes to fall from your hair. “It’s just all the other tables were occupied, and I was wondering if I could sit here? Unless someone else is already sitting here, of course!”
Akaashi stares at you for a few seconds, in a brief state of disbelief before responding, “Go ahead, no one’s sitting there.”
You offer him a small smile and unwrap your red chunky scarf from around your neck and drape it across the back of the chair. As you settle in, you look at Akaashi’s notes and instantly realize that they’re all from your shared class.
“Are you revising for the exam tomorrow?” you inquire before considering the possibility that Akaashi might think you’re nosy and you quickly add: “I’m here to study for it too.”
“Yeah, I am,” he confirms. Akaashi watches you sit across from him, his heart rate gradually increasing as, in a rare moment of spontaneity, he asks, “Do you want to revise together?”
You look up at Akaashi with a bright smile, that he believes might be capable of melting the snow outside and reply, “Sure!”
~~~
Second Winter: “You can hear it in the silence, silence, you/ You can feel it on the way home, way home, you/ You can see it with the lights out, lights out/ You are in love, true love/ You are in love”
Sunday afternoons in your second year of university follow a consistent pattern: you wake up, go through your morning routine, then head out to meet up with Akaashi at the coffee shop, where you had your first proper conversation with him, to study and do some work together, despite not having any classes together anymore.
Akaashi is usually the one to show up first for your, what his roommates Bokuto and Kuroo have dubbed, “study dates”. When he first started meeting up with you at the coffee shop, he continuously insisted to his extroverted friends that these weren’t dates, but he eventually gave up because he knows that arguing with them is pointless.
However, Akaashi cannot deny that he looks forward to seeing you every Sunday, which is why he arrives earlier than you. He enjoys securing a table for the two of you, preferably the coveted table by the window and he likes having everything organized and ready for when you arrive.
Seeing you walk through the doors with your headphones on, scanning the coffee shop for him and smiling when you spot him brings Akaashi a surge of happiness, especially if he’s been through a particularly crappy week. At first, when you began meeting at the coffee shop, Akaashi was shy and awkward around you, but now he’s somehow figured out how to act comfortable around you.
You and Akaashi typically study together in silence, but sometimes you quiz each other when you have exams coming up. During your breaks, you both complain about your workloads and your classes and discuss what you have coming up during the week. Sometimes, you and Akaashi will look out the window and people-watch, crafting elaborately goofy backstories for all the passerby you see.
It is while people-watching and sipping on hot chocolate on one winter’s day that you glance away from the window to look at Akaashi and comment, “You know it’s about a year since we started studying together.”
“Really? I can’t believe it’s been that long,” Akaashi remarks with a dumbstruck expression.
“I guess time really does fly by,” you say before your eyes sparkle with excitement as something outside catches your attention. “Akaashi! Look how cute that corgi is!”
The glasses-wearing man cannot help, but be endeared by how enthusiastic you are about a dog. He has come to admire how your eyes sparkle every time you see a cute animal. And how your eyebrows knit together whenever you are in deep concentration. And how you purse your lips when you are reading something that you don’t quite comprehend. And how you happily sigh after taking the first sip of your favorite beverage.
With every little thing he learns about you, Akaashi’s crush on you has unconsciously bloomed into actual love.
~~~
Third Winter: “And this is when the feeling sinks in/I don't wanna miss you like this/ Come back, be here/ Come back, be here”
Through the window, Akaashi can see that the coffee shop isn’t particularly busy on this Sunday evening. The table by the window is vacant and the space is warmly lit. Part of him is tempted to step in and escape the chilly weather then get some coffee and read the book in his bag for half an hour.
However, after a moment’s consideration, he dismisses this idea.
It doesn’t feel right anymore to be there without you.
Akaashi hasn’t really seen much of you over the past year. Firstly, you studied abroad for a few months and the time difference made it a challenge to stay in touch. When you came back, Akaashi had already taken a part-time job at the university’s library and you started working part-time off-campus, which meant you had to commute a lot.
It was difficult to find time to hang out with one another when friend groups, school, work, and other responsibilities seem to constantly keep you apart. This eventually led to you and Akaashi rarely texting each other anymore.
Akaashi wasn’t bitter towards you for losing touch. Honestly, he understood. Life got in the way sometimes. And he could just as easily reach out to you, but he was afraid. He knew he shouldn’t be, as Bokuto and Kuroo liked to point out. You viewed him as a friend and vice versa.
Still, he couldn’t help, but think that maybe you were hanging out and studying with him last year out of politeness. Maybe you finally had a chance to do stuff you enjoyed with other people and him randomly texting you now would simply be a nuisance to you.
Would things have been different if he revealed how he truly felt about you? Probably not. There is no way you felt the same way about him, and any potential confession would have terminated your friendship.
Akaashi pulls the collar of his coat higher up as a frosty breeze hits his face and he continues trudging down the sidewalk under dark winter sky. He knows it would be best to forget about you and forget about all the moments you shared together. It would cause him less heartache.
Still, he doesn’t want to stop longing for your presence in his life once again.
~~~
Fourth Winter: “Been here all along/ So, why can't you see?/ You belong with me”
It’s Saturday morning and Akaashi is sitting at the table in the coffee shop that he has sat at countless times. He takes a brief pause from the book he’s been absorbed in since he arrived in order to glance out the window: it snowed the prior night, and a light blanket of snow has covered the university campus. Students casually stroll past the window, lost in their own individual worlds, as the snow crunches beneath their feet. A pang of nostalgia hits him as he is reminded once again that he’ll soon no longer be a student. Soon, he’ll be entering the working world, hopefully as an editor.
Not wanting to get lost thinking about the future, Akaashi picks up his book and resumes reading it. He’s not very far into the book, roughly a quarter of the way through, yet so much mystery and tension has already been established that he easily forgets about the real world. And he is soon so immersed in his book’s fictional world that he is oblivious to the sudden presence beside him.
He doesn’t even notice you when you clear your throat in an attempt to grab his attention.
“Hello? Akaashi?” a familiar voice beside greets.
“Y/N?” Akaashi says with an inquisitive tone even before he looks up to see you standing there, almost bashfully, in your favorite red chunky scarf that you wore during your serendipitous encounter.
“It’s been a while.”
“Yeah, it has been. I wasn’t expecting to see you,” he admits as he notices you're still standing. He gestures to the unoccupied chair across from him and adds, “No one’s sitting there, if you want to sit down.”
You offer him a meek smile as you sit down across from him, not bothering to take off your scarf or long coat. As you rub your hands together, trying to warm yourself up a bit, Akaashi admires how radiant you look. But that shouldn’t come as a surprise. Every single time you sat at this table, you always looked radiant.
“I was actually just walking by,” you commence explaining, your eyes focused on Akaashi’s empty coffee mug instead of his face, “when I saw you through the window and I thought I would just stop by and say ‘hi’ and apologize. I know we haven’t talked in forever and I feel like it’s my fault. I was just so busy, and time kept passing by really quickly and I felt a little awkward texting you after not talking to you in such a long time. And since we didn’t hang out much outside our usual study sessions, I wasn’t sure you still wanted to spend time with me...”
As you trail off, you finally meet Akaashi’s eyes and he can see the sincerity and guilt in your gaze, which tugs at his heart strings. He wishes that he had something prepared to say to you, some eloquent and rehearsed speech, but he knows that the best he can offer you is honest thoughts and feelings.
“Y/N, I’ve always loved spending time with you. I still want to spend time with you. I’m sorry if I ever made you think otherwise. And don’t apologize for us losing touch. It’s partially my fault as well. I could have just as easily texted you and asked if you wanted to hang out sometime.”
A chuckle escapes you when Akaashi finishes speaking and you slouch back in your chair as you groan, “Are we just a couple of idiotic overthinkers?”
“I guess so,” Akaashi laughs as he runs a hand through his dark, messy locks.
“Do you mind if I grab us some cups of coffee so we can catch up?”
“I can’t let you pay for my coffee, Y/N.”
“Okay, how about this: I’ll get us coffee and some pastries right now and then you can treat me to dinner sometime this week?” you suggest with a playful glimmer in your eye.
Akaashi takes no time in answering, “Sounds like a date.”
You don’t say anything in response. You simply smile broadly then cheerfully bound towards the counter to place your orders and, as he waits for you, the weight of your exchange finally hits Akaashi. Surprisingly, though, he doesn’t feel flustered. Instead, there is a sense of peace within as he watches you from across the room.
Because there is something about him being with you right now that feels right.
hihi! I wanted to ask if you could write about akaashi during his university years? I’m applying to medical school right now and in desperate need of some motivation, and your writing is so fluffy that I thought I would send this in! I feel like akaashi would love study sessions at a coffee shop, but I would love anything school related with him haha. sorry for the long ask, have a good day/night! :>
ANON YOU’VE GOT ME STARTING AN ENTIRE UNIVERSE IN MY HEAD—OH MY GODDDD
a part of me now wants to write one shots/blurbs for various characters within the uni au… but i’m boring in college. it’s hard to think of fun little au ideas when literally all i do is study and hang out with three (3) friends.
another short scene(s) that will probably (but never say never) get put into a full fic
this one: bokuaka (hq) & coffee shops & university au
i looked back at this draft after two years of not touching it and omg i kinda forgot how much i liked the idea for this fic... i hope one day i can go back to it
fun fact—i lowkey based the whole fic off the title i wanted for it: A Beauty in his Mind
{scene(s) under cut}
Akaashi had been getting more headaches than usual lately.
Not that it was a surprise. When he told his parents that he would be majoring in Creative Writing in University, they chastised and scolded for weeks on end.
"It's a waste of time!" his mother declared.
"How are you going to get a job with that kind of major? Might as well be living in a box," his father said, disgusted.
"I can't go into something like chemistry or math!" Akaashi insisted. "Wrapping my brain around all those formulas, not being able to express myself creatively—I can't live like that!"
"You won't be able to live at all with a major like Creative Writing," his mother hissed, as if his choice of major was some sort of curse. "You wouldn't be able to earn enough money to get yourself food at the grocery store."
"After all the sacrifices we made for you..." his father sighed. "You throw it all away with this."
After a month of this, Akaashi resolved to move out.
Akaashi was able to get an apartment about fifteen minutes from his university. The apartment complex was across the street from a town center with a supermarket, an ice cream shop, and a café. Overall, the town seemed pleasant and peaceful—a nice change in pace from his previous living conditions.
Akaashi was never the type to disobey the rules. He was a good student—in high school he took top level university preparation classes, he got one of the highest scores on exams, he even played in his school's volleyball club as an added extracurricular to put on his applications (it shows great teamwork and leadership skills people always said). But this time, he couldn't just follow blindly with what his parents were telling him to do. He couldn't become a doctor or an engineer like his parents always wanted. Every time Akaashi pictured himself performing surgery on someone or manipulating some foreign formula to build some sort of robot arm, he felt like he was about to suffocate. Writing was his passion—a way to truly be able to show his true colors and say what he was really feeling inside. Akaashi couldn't, no more like wouldn't, throw that away for sake of gaining more security or a bigger paycheck.
But that still didn't make him any less terrified.
There was no doubt that the choice he was making was a risky one. But if he didn't go down this path, Akaashi would regret it for the rest of his life. He would spend eternity swimming in a sea of what ifs or what would haves. Akaashi was grateful for all that his parents had done for him so far in his life, but now he had to pave his own road—make choices for himself and not for the sake of others.
Crap, crap, crap, Akaashi thought to himself as he frantically pressed the button that would allow him to cross the street from his apartment complex to the town center. It was already eleven o'clock in the morning, which means the café is bound to be packed already with people. Akaashi needed to score a seat and a table in order to work on his narrative for one of his writing classes. He had writer's block, and looking at the same old walls in his apartment with zero inspiration was making him go crazy—he needed a change of scenery. Originally, Akaashi planned to get to the café early at six o'clock so he could grind out his paper, but he had unfortunately slept through his alarm.
After what felt like an eternity, Akaashi was finally able to cross the street and enter the café. Surprise, surprise, sighed Akaashi. It's crowded. Nevertheless, he clutched the bag he was carrying and headed to the counter to order his usual.
"One large Caffè Latte please," Akaashi said to the barista.
"Sounds good, one large Caffè Latte," the barista repeated. "That'll be four dollars please."
As Akaashi handed the barista his money, he heard an unfamiliar voice.
"Interesting choice, although I'm more of an Iced Green Tea guy myself."
Akaashi turned around and suddenly a man around his age was standing next to him. He had black and grey spiky hair with white tips. His golden eyes glistened as the light from above them hit his face.
"Well it's a good thing it's my order and my drink," Akaashi replied nonchalantly.
When the barista handed him his receipt and he proceeded to walk away, Akaashi could've sworn that the man he spoke to earlier ordered a Caffè Latte from the barista as well.
He's certainly a character, Akaashi thought to himself, then shook his head. It's his money, he can waste it on whatever he wants with it, even if that includes getting some random drink because some stranger was getting it too.
Akaashi leaned on a nearby wall while he waited for the barista to make his drink. He got out his phone and started scrolling through the News app to catch up on whatever he missed to pass the time.
You won't believe what the secret ingredient is in this Power Curry!
Weather Update: The Best Time to go to the Beach
This new starting lineup filled to the brim with rising stars!
Water Warriors season three is here! Is it a Hit or a Miss?
"Akaashi!" the barista called from the counter.
"Thank you," Akaashi said, grabbing his drink.
Now, Akaashi attempted to scan the room for an empty chair so he could work. Nope. Nothing.
Wait!
Akaashi quickly spotted an empty seat at a table in the corner of the room, right next to the front window of the café. The table had room for only two chairs, and from what he could see, someone was already occupying one of them. It would be a little cramped, but Akaashi was desperate. He needed to finish his narrative. It certainly wasn't unusual to share a table with a complete stranger, Akaashi had done it all the time in the library during finals week.
"Excuse me," Akaashi began. "Do you mind if I sit here-"
"Mr. Caffè Latte!"
It wasn't until then that Akaashi saw the other customer occupying the other seat at the table. Life can be so cruel, Akaashi thought to himself.  It was the stranger who ordered the same drink as him.
"You know I have to say," the stranger said, taking another sip of his coffee. "I don't know why you get this. It tastes so bitter."
"Then why did you order it?" Akaashi asked, annoyed.
"Because I was curious," the stranger said. "You see, I’ve always wanted to try coffee! You look like a smart person, with your glasses and everything. I figured smart people get good coffee orders."
"But unfortunately, that didn't seem to be the case this time." the stranger continued, shaking his head. "It tastes so bitter."
"Yeah whatever, I didn't come here to be judged for my taste in coffee," Akaashi said. "I came here to ask you if I could sit here in that empty chair at this table."
"Of course!" the stranger exclaimed. The stranger was practically beaming with joy, as if he had been waiting for someone to take the empty seat across from him.
"Thank you," Akaashi mumbled, and sat down, placing his coffee on the table. He zipped open the bag he had brought in and grabbed his laptop from inside. Akaashi put the laptop on the table, turned it on, and pulled up the Word Doc he was working on earlier with his narrative on it. He scanned through and edited what he had so far:
Akihiko lived a quiet life. He was the owner of a small bakery at the edge of town, away from the demons. He had no desire to fight them like the other guys in his class did. Running this bakery gave him the means to get everything he wanted: food on his plate, clothes to wear on his back, a roof to sleep under. He was safe. He was happy. Or so he thought.
Once in a while, Akihiko would find himself daydreaming about the life he could’ve lived if he joined the Warriors. Cutting the demons down one by one, telling stories around the fire with his fellow soldiers about the battles they had fought that day. It seemed fun to him. Better than the boring, monotonous life he was living now. Alas, Akihiko shook his head. There’s no fun in being a demon slaying hero if you are dead, he sighed.
“Whatcha working on?” the stranger asked, a quizzical expression forming on his face.
Akaashi looked up from his screen. “Why do you care? It’s none of your business,” he said.
“Because you looked confused while staring at your laptop,” the stranger said. He smiled. “I thought maybe, if what you are working on is in my area of expertise, I could help.”
Akaashi narrowed his eyes. “I did not look ‘confused’ while staring at my laptop.”
“Even so,” the stranger retorted. “I want to help! You know what they say, two heads are better than one.”
Akaashi sighed, figuring there was going to be no end to the stranger’s banter if he didn’t give in to what he wanted. “I’m working on a narrative for one of my creative writing classes. I’m struggling with writer’s block right now.”
“Ahh I see,” the stranger said, tapping his chin. “That can be difficult. So, what’s happening right now in the story?”
Akaashi eyed the stranger. Why is he so interested in this? Nevertheless, Akaashi continued. “The protagonist is this guy who lives in a village. He lives a quiet, normal life, but at the same time he craves adventure. But he still appreciates the safety and security of his current living conditions. I’m trying to figure out how to get the protagonist to go on this quest I have planned out for him, without making his decision to go on the quest seem out of character.”
The stranger ran his hand through his spiky hair. “Hmmm… Why don’t you just force him?”
Akaashi eyes widened, dumbfounded. “Uh yeah, that’s sort of the point of me writing this narrative. To force the main character to do things that are out of his element. But the problem is that right now, he wouldn’t choose-”
“So don’t make him choose,” the stranger fired back. “Make up a situation where he can’t say no! Something like that.”
Akaashi adjusted his glasses, considering what the stranger had to say. “Make up a situation where he can’t say no?” Akaashi repeated. “It would take some time for me to think of a good scene for the encounter but… that could work-”
“Hey, hey, hey! That’s what I mean!” the stranger exclaimed. “When your book becomes famous, you better list me as one of your significant contributors: Bokuto Koutarou!”
“I’m not writing a book, it’s just a narrative for my creative writing class.”
“Well when you do decide to write a book, make sure you come to me! I like listening to your stories Mr. Caffè Latte! We could bounce ideas off each other!”
“My name isn’t Mr. Caffè Latte, it’s Akaashi Keiji,” Akaashi sighed, rolling his eyes. “Besides, are you even a Writing student? It would be a waste of your time trying to help me write since you don’t gain anything from it.”
“Well, no, I’m not,” Bokuto mumbled, suddenly looking very somber. “But who said anything about ‘gaining’ something? Listening to your ideas—it sounds fun to me! And if that’s the only thing I ‘gain’ from it, that’s alright with me. But if you ask me, I think that hearing your stories will have more benefits than what meets the eye.”
“You… have a strange taste in hobbies Bokuto-san,” Akaashi replied, now beginning to pack up his belongings. It looked like he wasn’t going to get any work done if he stayed in this café any longer.
“Where are you going Akashi?” Bokuto asked.
“Akaashi,” he corrected. “I’m sorry I must cut this conversation short, but I have to return home. I have some things I must take care of. Thank you for this conversation, Bokuto-san. I’ll be sure to keep your suggestions in mind next time I work on my narrative.”
“Anytime Akaashi!” Bokuto exclaimed. “I’ll see you later!”
Akaashi politely bowed towards Bokuto, and headed towards the exit door of the café. See you later? Why is he acting as though we will see each other again? Akaashi thought to himself. To each other, we are merely strangers. We met in this café by pure coincidence. Just two passerbys in the sea of chance. We will probably never see each other again.
But, if there was one thing Akaashi knew for certain, it’s that Fate deals her cards in the strangest ways.
As Akaashi left the café, out of the corner of his eye, he saw Bokuto take another sip of the Caffè Latte he ordered. Bokuto cringed. “So bitter.” ***
As Akihiko prepared to close up his shop for the night, a man came bursting through the doors of the bakery. His long cloak draped over his body and clothes, his white hair brushed in all sorts of directions, his golden eyes were wide, and his face appeared frightened.
“Please! You have to help me! You have to help me save my sister! She was captured by the demons!”
“I’m so sorry,” Akihiko apologized. “But I do not know how to fight demons. Maybe if we were to report this-”
“No!” the stranger said, forcefully. He pulled out a note from his cloak. “It has to be you!”
Akihiko opened the note. It read:
Brother, you must help me. I’ve been kidnapped by demons. Seek Akihiko, the owner of the bakery at the edge of town. He will be able to help you.
“I… I don’t understand,” Akihiko replied, his words shaking. “I… I don’t know you or you sister!”
“I don’t know why it says that either—but that’s what she wrote. Those were her last words to me!” the stranger exclaimed. “Please, I’m begging you, help me save my sister!”
Akihiko looked at the stranger. “I guess I can’t say no, huh?” ***
Akaashi had to lean on the crosswalk pole for support. With the deadline for his narrative looming in the distance, his sleepless nights increased. His limbs felt like boulders, sometimes if he zoned out too much, it would be difficult to walk. I just need a cup of coffee to wake me up, Akaashi told himself. Then, I’ll be okay.
When the crosswalk signal indicated that it was safe to cross the street, Akaashi trudged along, itching to get to the café. Luckily, Akaashi was able to wake up on time today, so there would be plenty of seats available.
He hadn’t been to the café in a couple days (he hated how reliant he was on caffeine in order to become just a functional human being), but Akaashi was getting desperate. He needed to get this paper done. He needed this paper to be good.
As he approached the café, something caught his eye in the corner table next to the front window. Black and grey. Spiky. White tips. Golden eyes. No… It couldn’t be…
Akaashi rubbed his head. He paid no mind to it. He entered the café.
“Akaashi!” he heard a voice say.
Akaashi turned his head towards the source of the sound. It came from the corner table near the front window. It was…
“Oh, hello Bokuto-san,” Akaashi said, bowing politely, hoping to hide his annoyance.
Bokuto motioned for him to come over to the table where he was sitting. Akaashi begrudgingly followed in order not to be rude.
“How have you been!” Bokuto exclaimed, as if he and Akaashi were close friends. “How’s the story coming along? I hope you took my advice into consideration!”
“It’s going along fine,” Akaashi said, itching to get away from the conversation as fast as he could. “And your advice was very helpful, thank you.”
Bokuto smiled wide. “That makes me happy to hear!” he said, pleased with himself. “Oh! You must be here to work! Here, put your stuff down on the chair on the other side of this table. You can keep it here while you go get your drink.”
Akaashi shook his head. “I’m sorry, but I have to do a lot of work today. Besides, there are plenty of empty seats available. I don’t want to intrude-”
“Intrude?! Don’t worry about it, you aren’t intruding!” Bokuto said. “I told you, I like listening to your stories, they’re very interesting! And I know you have to work, so I promise I won’t bother you when you need silence. Just give me the word, and I put in some headphones and listen to music or something so it’s quiet when you work. So please, come sit next to me?”
Akaashi sighed. While Akaashi still had a ways to go before his paper was finished, he would feel terrible rejecting Bokuto’s offer to share the table with him. He figured as long as Bokuto respected when he needed silence to work, it wouldn’t be such a big deal. “Okay, fine. Can you do me a favor and watch my stuff for me while I go get my drink?”
“Sounds good to me!” Bokuto exclaimed, smiling again.
Akaashi noticed that Bokuto smiled a lot. He was practically beaming with plain and pure happiness. It seemed like even the smallest things would fill Bokuto with joy. Akaashi suspected that if Bokuto found a lucky penny on the sidewalk on his way home, he would get so excited, the people around him would think he had just won the lottery.
Akaashi once again walked up to the counter to order his usual. “Can I get one large Caffè Latte?”
“Of course,” the barista said. “For Akaashi, right?”
He was taken aback. “You… remember my name?”
“Usually, only locals come to this café,” the barista replied. “You get used to remembering names and faces when it’s the same customers that come in every single day.”
“I see,” Akaashi said. “I’m sorry I can’t seem to remember yours.”
“It’s fine, don’t worry about it. You’re not the one on the clock anyways,” she reassured. “Here’s your receipt.”
“Thank you,” Akaashi replied, walking away from the counter.
Once Akaashi got his drink, he joined Bokuto again at the table.
“So, so?” Bokuto asked. “How’s the main guy doing in the story? What do you have written so far since the last time you came here? What’s happening right now?”
Akaashi saw no benefit protesting in answering Bokuto’s endless stream of questions. He figured he would just end up answering them in the long run anyways. Akaashi guessed that was the type of guy Bokuto was—the type that just pulls you in. Even if you didn’t care about him. Even if you weren’t interested in him. Even if you didn’t even know him. None of that mattered, once you get pulled into a conversation with him, you just can’t take your eyes away. His overbearing attitude was infectious, and soon enough all you want to do is hear more. You want to understand him. Why did he talk to you? Why is he so interested? Why does he care? Bokuto was an enigma. Once you meet him, all you will do is try and solve the puzzle.
“Here, I think it would be easier if you just read it for yourself,” Akaashi said, turning his laptop towards Bokuto so he could see the screen. “Don’t worry, I haven’t written much, so it’s not a long read.”
Bokuto’s golden eyes widened, glistening under the light from above. Glistening. They were always glistening. “I get to read it? I’m honored, thank you!” Bokuto smiled.
“It’s not a big deal,” Akaashi mumbled.
“What do you mean?” Bokuto asked, curious. “Usually, writers are really protective about who gets to read what they write, especially things that are a work in progress.”
“Yes, I guess so. I think it’s because in my experience writers are usually proud of what they’ve written. They’re afraid that whoever they show it to won’t like what they read,” Akaashi stated. “But that’s not really a problem here. I’m not really proud of this narrative.”
“What?! Why not?!”
“I mean, I don’t think it’s bad per se. It’s not as good as it could be,” Akaashi clarified. “It’s been really hard to write this narrative that’s all. I force myself to work on and write on this piece everyday because of my deadline coming up. But everything I’ve written in this narrative is just word vomit.”
“Word vomit?”
Akaashi sighed. “I’ve been having really bad writer’s block these past couple months. Everything I try to write in my free time eventually just falls flat. The only reason why I’m even making progress on this narrative is because it’s required for my class. But even the things I do type out for my narrative, it’s just garbage. If I’m being honest, I have no idea where this story is even going.”
Bokuto frowned in response.
“Ah, I’m sorry,” Akaashi apologized. “I guess I’ve just been really frustrated these past couple months and needed to vent. I’m sorry you had to hear all of that.”
“No, it’s fine, don’t worry about it!” Bokuto assured him. “If you need to vent or complain or anything, you can always come to me.”
Akaashi politely smiled. Honestly, the idea of sharing all of his personal problems with a complete stranger terrified him. Yet, with Bokuto, for some reason, it didn’t feel like that. Nevertheless, Akaashi was still hesitant. “Thank you Bokuto-san, I will keep that in mind.”
“Mmhmm! Of course,” Bokuto said. “I’m going to keep reading this now.”
“By all means,” Akaashi replied, taking a sip of his coffee.
Akaashi stayed quiet to let Bokuto finish reading the draft. He glanced around the café, looking at all the customers talking, laughing, drinking their cup of Joe to receive their energy for the day. But somehow, someway, no matter where he looked, his eyes would always fall back onto Bokuto. He had a strong form. He definitely must work out or something. Akaashi could see Bokuto’s chest rise up and down as he breathed. As Bokuto’s eyes scanned the laptop screen (they were glistening, of course), there was this childlike curiosity about them. As they say, the eyes are the windows to the soul and from one glance at Bokuto’s, Akaashi could tell that he was really interested. There was no lying or manipulation involved—he genuinely wanted to get to know Akaashi.
But why? Akaashi asked himself. Why are you so interested in me? I’m nothing special. His eyes landed on Bokuto once more. Akaashi couldn’t place it, but there was something different about him. He stood out, that’s for sure. How could he not? His grey and black hair spread in all directions, it resembled how an owl’s feathers would be spread. He was loud, boisterous. All eyes would turn to him whenever he would walk into a room—that’s just the type of guy he was. No matter how hard you try, it’s impossible to look away. If anything it should be the other way around: it should be Akaashi that’s interested in Bokuto. Because if there was one that Akaashi knew, for better or for worse, Bokuto was something special.
“Akaashi?”
“Oh? What?”
“I finished reading your draft,” Bokuto explained.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I must’ve zoned out,” Akaashi apologized.
“It’s no problem,” Bokuto said. “I really like it! You're such a good writer Akaashi! You must be really hard on yourself if you think this is bad.”
“Thank you, I appreciate it,” Akaashi said. “But when you’re a Creative Writing major, the professors expect you to be good at writing, so there’s a lot of pressure added whenever a large paper is due.”
“Oh, I see, that must be really difficult,” Bokuto said.
“Yeah, and to top it all off, I have no idea where this story is even going,” Akaashi huffed. “I’ve been in this writer’s block slump for so long, I forgot what it’s like to get a really good idea, you know?”
“Hmm I think I sort of understand,” Bokuto responded, rubbing his chin. Suddenly, he snapped his fingers. “Are you free tomorrow?”
“I have class in the morning, but I should be free in the afternoon,” Akaashi replied, raising an eyebrow. “Why do you ask?”
Bokuto smiled. “I’m going to get you out of your writer’s block!”
Akaashi eyed him suspiciously. “I’ve tried many things to help me get out of my slump—exercise, meditation, more sleep, you name it. No offense, but how do you think you are going to get me out of my writer’s block?”
“Hey, hey, hey! At least let me try!” Bokuto protested. “After all, the last time I gave you advice, it ended up working out for the better, right?”
Akaashi couldn’t help but admit he was right. “Okay fine, what did you have in mind?”
“Tomorrow, meet me at Koi Park at four o’clock p.m. There should be some benches near the information building of the park, let’s meet there.”
“How is this supposed to help me get out of my slump?”
Bokuto gave a more mischievous smile this time. “You’ll see.”
Akaashi tried to ask more questions, but Bokuto wouldn’t give. What am I doing? Akaashi scolded himself. He should be studying, working on his projects, attending office hours for his professors—not getting stringed along by some stranger’s convoluted plot to help him even though he barely knew who he was. But that was the power of Bokuto: he pulls you in, he makes you listen. He attracts you with his bright eyes and beaming smile. He’ll reel you into his light and before you know it…
“Okay, I’ll see you then.”
…you’re blind.  ***
“You were having a long conversation with that customer, Kaori.”
“Are you insinuating something, Yukie?”
“No, no, not at all,” Yukie replied, acting innocent. “But, I mean, do you think he’s cute? I mean I don’t blame you. You got the glasses, the hair, the eyes, the glasses…”
“What?! Akaashi? No!” Kaori retorted. “You know I’m dating someone already.”
“I know, I know. But for the record, it is not a crime to look,” Yukie stated, filling an endless line of coffees with whipped cream.
“It’s just,” Kaori began, as she poured more coffee beans in the coffee maker. “I recognize Akaashi. We go to the same university. He’s in one of my classes. But…”
“But what?”
“Whenever I see Akaashi in class, he always looks so sad,” Kaori said. “I felt sorry for him. It looked like he’s been going through something.”
“Oh?”
“But the past couple times Akaashi has come into the café, he’s sat at that same corner table near the front window,” Kaori observed. “And I noticed, he doesn’t look as sad anymore.”
“Well good for him then,” Yukie said. “He probably found something, like a new hobby or show, to lift his spirits or distract him from whatever’s going on.”
Kaori glanced over at the corner table again and saw Akaashi. He looked exhausted for one. However, he wasn’t wearing that same crinkled, frustrated expression he always wore before when he was in class. He looked like he was almost… beaming.
“Yeah.” ***
Akihiko let the stranger stay the night in his cottage. They would leave the next morning in search for his sister. Meanwhile, Akihiko got to learn more about the stranger.
His name was Bunta. His younger sister, Wakuri, was still a young child, so she just followed him wherever he went. Bunta was a traveling salesman—he and his sister trekked all across Japan to sell their goods to willing buyers. When Akihiko asked why he didn’t just open up a permanent shop, he just shrugged.
“I can’t stay cooped up in one place for too long,” Bunta replied. “Makes me feel like I’m suffocating.”
“But your business would be much more profitable if you had a real shop,” Akihiko suggested. “You would have a lot more loyal customers if-”
“Ehh, don’t really care about making bank,” Bunta said, shrugging again. “As long as I make enough money to keep Wakuri and I well and healthy, I don’t need all of that other fancy stuff. I’m more interested in traveling all over Japan—seeing the world you know?”
“Seeing the world… Huh…”
“What about it?”
“Oh nothing,” Akihiko replied. “I’ve just never been outside this city before.”
“Seriously?”
“Seriously,” Akihiko confirmed. “I’m kind of scared. This little quest of ours will basically be my first trip.”
Bunta gave Akihiko a large grin. “Then allow me to be your guide.”
Bokuaka Week 2020 Day One: Bookshop/Coffee Shop AU
Also Available on my AO3
It started off as a normal day for Akaashi. He woke up, got dressed then walked downstairs into his cafe and bookshop to set up before opening. Akaashi looked up as he heard the doorbell chime and Kenma walked in, “Have you had any sleep Kenma, your eyebags look worse than mine?” Kenma looked up tiredly at Akaashi before continuing around the counter. “Sorry, Kuroo bought me the newest Pokemon game as an apology for his last prank and I lost track of time while playing it.”
Akaashi put the last of the cakes into the display case while Kenma set up the register. They were opening soon and Akaashi still had to bake a few more cakes but he had the first batch out and ready. Kenma had finished setting up the register and had gone over to the coffee machine and started to brew two coffee’s. He pointed at the clock on the wall before gesturing to the door letting Kenma know that it was almost opening.
It was around two when things started to go crazy. Kuroo entered at his normal time, sitting at the table in the back as people began to vacate the cafe, before it closed so that Akaashi and Kenma could have lunch. Akaashi flipped the sign to shut as Kuroo bookmarked and closed a short novel, with an orange paw print on the front of its otherwise white cover. It was only upon turning around that Akaashi noticed that Kuroo wasn’t alone at the table. A tall man with spiky grey-white and black hair was sitting across the table from Kuroo looking around the small bookshop cafe with his golden eyes.
Kenma looked over at where Kuroo was sighing as he made coffee for the four of them and grabbed the lunches out of the backroom. Akaashi moved over to the counter and grabbed the coffee’s putting them down at the table, noticing that there was a hot chocolate there that he assumed was for the owlish man. Kenma walked over to the table with some sandwiches, a medium apple pie and a piece of chocolate cake.
Kuroo was the one to start the conversation, asking Kenma and Akaashi about their day, Kenma seemed to know the owlish man and talked about irritating customers before asking him how training went. Akaashi started to feel more and more awkward as the conversation continued, the owlish man was gesturing in wild movements how volleyball practice went while Kuroo was listening intently, cracking jokes and asking questions. Kenma was distracting himself from the wild conversation by playing on his DS, it was probably the new Pokemon game that Kenma had mentioned Kuroo buying him earlier. Akaashi half listened to the conversation having lost interest in volleyball during middle school declining recommendations from Fukurodani and Suzumeoka in favour of Nekoma’s closeness to home and high level literature classes. By the end of the conversation Akaashi had discovered that the owlish man’s name is Bokuto, that he played volleyball against Kenma and Kuroo in high school and that he is a pro volleyball player for the local division 1 team the MBSY Black Jackals. Akaashi looked over at the clock as he gathered the dishes from lunch taking them over to the sink behind the counter signalling for Kenma to flip the sign on the door back to open as Kuroo and Bokuto leave the cafe, the owlish man still gesturing wildly. Akaashi notices that he has a small smile on his face in his reflection.
Kuroo and Bokuto walk down the street towards the professional spikers house talking about how excited they are of Hinata's return to Japan and the upcoming game against the Adlers. The conversation turns from volleyball to Kenma when Kuroo says he’s going to be watching the game with Kenma. Bokuto asks how Kenma is going about working at the cafe as well as having a large following on his gaming channel on youtube.
“It’s easy for him, Akaashi lets him work at the cafe whenever he wants for as long as he wants, he knows how lonely being at home without anyone can be and he’s known us since high school.” Kuroo sighs looking upwards at the clouds, “I wish that Akaashi had someone sometimes, he just seems so lonely all the time.”
Bokuto looked at Kuroo, eyes wide with shock at the revelation that Akaashi, the pretty, petite, pale cafe/bookstore owner, was single. “Bro, Akaashi is single, I assumed that he was dating someone, he looks so nice and is so polite.” Kuroo sighs at Bokuto’s sudden outburst coming to a stop at the crosswalk.
“Akaashi is seen as too introverted for most and those who find him nice often don’t mesh well with his ‘serious and emotionless’ self. He also has issues with anxiety that causes him to avoid people for the most part.” Kuroo took a step forward crossing the road with Bokuto slightly behind him on his left, processing what Kuroo had just told him.
“Do you think that I could have a chance with him, Kuroo?” Bokuto questions, shocking Kuroo with the abruptness of the question. “Well it depends on if he finds you interesting or annoying, he quit volleyball at the end of middle school but was willing to give Kenma pointers with strategy and tactics cause he found that Kenma was nice to talk to but he disliked me at first. It really depends on how you act, I don’t think he likes being around loud people a lot but is more used to it than he was in high school.”
Bokuto looked over at Kuroo with pleading eyes, “Could you please be my wingman on this one Kuroo?” Kuroo looked at Bokuto’s puppy eyes before nodding slowly in agreement “I’ll be your wingman but you're going to have to be the one to talk to him once I get the conversation going okay?”
Bokuto nods as they round the corner to his apartment and continue up the stairs to the elevator inside. They ride the elevator in silence, Bokuto thinking about what he was going to talk about to the beautiful man he had met earlier that day, Kuroo’s talk about how he had quit volleyball was probably a sign that using that as a conversation point was probably off the table. He looked over at Kuroo, a moment of decisiveness coming over him. “Do you know what his favourite book genre is? I could read some books then use them to have a conversation with him.” Kuroo looked over at his longtime close friend, shocked that he was willing to read after having to fight with him to get him to study for exams.
“He likes lots of genres but is currently reading lots of short novels about teenagers, sport and crime. I’ve almost finished the first book in a series he’s recommended. I'll lend it to you once I finish it.” Kuroo said, gesturing to his bag which had the book from earlier in it as they exit the elevator and continue towards Bokuto’s apartment.
The following week Bokuto was finishing up the final book in the All for the Game series as he waited for Kuroo so they could head to Akaashi’s coffee shop for lunch. He was nervously tapping his feet as he read the final chapter of The King’s Men. He was surprised by the theme of the book and how it went from lighthearted to dark then back to lighthearted as the characters' moods shifted. Bokuto jumps and closes his book as Kuroo enters his apartment, slightly slamming the door shut as he yells. “Hey, bro are you ready to see Akaashi?”
Bokuto paused at the corner of the street from the cafe, he was clenching and unclenching his fist nervously as he waited for the lights to change. Kuroo looked over at his best friend who was clearly nervous. “Dude, chill, the worst thing that could happen is Akaashi gets nervous around you. Kenma has told me that Akaashi has asked him to be his wingman.”
Around the corner Akaashi and Kenma sneeze as they close the shop for lunch. “Akaashi are you sure that you are comfortable with this, you have only known each other for a week.” Kenma looks worriedly over his longtime friend. “It’s okay Kenma, I’ll give him a chance, thanks for talking Kuroo out of his original plan, that would have been awkward.” Both Kenma and Akaashi shiver at the thought of a picnic double date in the current chilly weather.
They look up from their usual lunch table as Bokuto and Kuroo enter the cafe, walking past bookshelves and other tables as they make their way towards them. Akaashi started to nervously fiddle with his fingers under the table as Bokuto sat down on his left. Kuroo sat on Kenma’s right smiling at Bokuto as he reached for Kenma’s hand under the table. There was a short bout of awkward silence as they all started to eat. After a few minutes Kuroo finally decided to break the silence, “Akaashi, I finally got around to finishing the All for the Game series a few days ago, I must say that I was surprised that you were interested in it considering how sports focused it can get.”
Akaashi looked elated at the prospect of talking about the series as he quickly replied words seemingly flying from his mouth, “On the surface it can seem to be focused on sports but the real pushing factor is everyone's mindsets from the trauma that they had gone through in their childhood, Neil wants to play exy not only because it's fun but because it’s something that he was told he couldn’t do by his mother due to his circumstances with his father. Andrew is playing exy cause it gets his family into a University and allows him time off his meds at the beginning then we see him become more and more attached to Neil…” he drifts off realising that he was ranting about a book series that half of the table probably haven’t read yet.
Bokuto took his silence as an opportunity to jump into the conversation, “I think that Akaashi is right Kuroo, the book series used the Foxes playing Exy as a parallel to Neil and Andrew facing their trauma and identity and overcoming the habits that their parents had trained them into.”
Akaashi looked at Bokuto surprised remembering what Kenma had told him about the man Bokuto had read a book series that he had enjoyed and had analysed what the true story going through the series was when he was rarely able to sit still and was training to play on the Japanese Olympic team. “It also shows all four responses to threats, Neil being flight, Andrew being fight, Kevin being freeze and Jean being fawn.” Akaashi added onto Bokuto’s previous statement, eyes shining with excitement behind his passive facial expressions.
The two continued to talk about the book series with Bokuto getting his number and several book recommendations so they could continue to converse about them. It wasn’t a surprise that within a month of them exchanging contacts they had told Kuroo and Kenma that they were officially dating. It was more of a surprise for Kenma that Akaashi could deal with Bokuto’s high energy and mood swings as though he had been doing it for years.
They were perfect for each other, Kenma mused, he was happy that he had asked Kuroo to bring Bokuto along that day.
