Tweet after tweet started rolling through and you frowned, confused. Ever since you’d met Luke you’d gotten used to a few mentions here and there and to the influx of followers on all of your social media accounts. But this was something different, something you weren’t quite familiar with.

You opened the app and your stomach sank as you immediately wished you hadn’t. They were hate tweets, flooding your mentions, all of them ranging from grammar Nazis to actual Nazis. You breath caught in your throat, fingers trembling so much that your phone actually dropped with a loud crackonto the tiled floor.

You knew that there were fans out there that weren’t overly happy with your presence in the lives of their Favourite Boys, but this was something else. Something you never would have thought would happen to you. You felt your bottom lip quiver and you couldn’t stop the small sob that slipped from your lips. Tears fell slowly down your cheeks, and for the first time in months, you were really glad that Luke wasn’t around.

“Y/N?”

The boys called for you as they filed in, this week’s secret dance party being held at your place. You jumped, surprised that they were here already. You weren’t expecting them for at least another hour, you hadn’t even gotten dressed yet. You were still sitting in your room in your bath towel, scrolling through your twitter feed.

You tried not to, especially after what had happened last week. And you did well for a few days, you just deleted the app and that was that. You couldn’t see the comments anymore so they couldn’t hurt you.

You just wanted to know if they’d stopped yet. You re-downloaded twitter to check and now, here you were, naked and trying to cover up the fact that you were crying again because you could hear somebody walking down the hallway towards your room.

“Y/N? You in here?” Luke knocked on the door but opened it up anyway, his sense of boundaries with you having disappeared weeks ago. You stumbled with your phone for a few seconds before you finally shoved it under your leg.

“Dude, what the fuck, I’m naked.” You shot weakly with an attempt at a frown. As soon as Luke saw you he frowned back, closing the door carefully and rushing over to you.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” He asked, worry dripping from his tongue.

“Nothing, I’m fine.” You huffed, shifting uncomfortably on the bed as Luke sat next to you with your legs touching. You tried to move over a little bit to create some space, but you knew your phone would slip out if you did so you just leaned away from him a little bit.

“Cut the shit, Y/N.” Luke said, hand already on your back, carefully placed on the towel instead of your skin. You sniffled and shook your head. “Y/N, what’s up?”

Your throat tightened and you knew that whatever you said next was going to be accompanied by more tears. It sucked. You hated feeling so vulnerable, especially in front of Luke.

“I just…” Your lip quivered and you bit it in an attempt to make it stop. You glanced up at Luke for just a second, but that was all it took to tip you over the edge. You let out a dark laugh as a few tears escaped down your cheeks.

“I feel like an idiot!” You practically wailed, throwing your hands into the air before burying your face in them. You sobbed more than you had before into your hands, letting Luke pull you to him so he could wrap his arms around you properly.

“Hey!” He said in your ear. “Hey, come on, where is this coming from?! You’re not an idiot.”

“I am!” You replied, the words muffled by your hands. Luke pushed you away, hands grabbing your wrists so he could pull your hands away from your face and look into your eyes properly.

“Y/N, stop.” He said carefully, not really scolding you but trying to get you to calm down. You were about to hyperventilate, chest heaving and breaths shallow. “Breathe, bub, come on.” He reached for your face, thumb brushing away new tears spilling over your lash line. “What happened?”

You took a few more seconds to take some deep breaths and steady yourself before you even tried to speak again. You wiped your nose ungracefully on the towel and sighed.

“I… I just feel like I should have seen this coming, you know?” You finally said, so quietly you were almost afraid he wouldn’t hear you.

“Seen what coming, Y/N?” He asked, a frown embedded into his brow. You looked up at him, almost in disbelief but mostly just questioning.

“As if you haven’t noticed.” You deadpanned and Luke just shook his head, still not following what you were trying to say. You took another deep breath and closed your eyes.

“I… I’m getting a lot of… comments made about me.” You finally said the words out loud and it felt like a big weight had already been lifted off of your shoulders. When you opened your eyes, Luke’s face seemed to fall even more. He didn’t say anything though, and a new panic started to rise in your chest as you wondered if maybe he was mad at you now. If maybe that meant you couldn’t be friends anymore.

“Shit, Y/N…” he said after what felt like forever. “Y/N… I’m so sorry.” You sniffed again but shrugged, turning your face away from him so he couldn’t see the new tears pooling in your eyes.

“It’s whatever.” You said nonchalantly, finally feeling just numb enough as you braced yourself for the worse.

“Don’t say that, Y/N.” He seemed to tell you off. “It’s not whatever, it’s fucked up.”

You just shrugged again.

“Yeah, I know. But it’s whatever.”You snapped your head back up to look at Luke and he was frowning again, this time seeming a little angry. “It was bound to happen eventually, alright.”

Luke sighed, arm slinking around your shoulders again. The skin of his wrist brushed your bare skin for a second and you got shivers.

“Why didn’t you tell me, Y/N?” He said, softer now and pulling you closer so that you didn’t really have a choice but to rest your head into the crook of his neck. You gave a final heavy shrug and tried not to let the closeness between you fuck with your heart too much.

“I just… I thought I could handle it.” You told him, almost whispering. “I don’t want you to worry about me.”

Luke pressed a kiss to the top of your head and you really hoped he couldn’t feel you flush pink.

“I want to worry about you, Y/N.” He said. “I care about you.”

MIC Drop Analysis

here is the 7th track analysis: MIC Drop from BTS’ Love Yourself 承 Her Album

i would be analysing several parts: music, lyrics and choreography 

disclaimer: this is just my personal opinion, feel free to disagree. i would love to hear your opinions on this, leave them in my askbox.

overall: can we all agree on how lit this song is??? tbh, this is the only lit song throughout the whole album. i guess each album needs a lit song just like in each of their albums, they have a lit song. for 2Cool4Skool, they have No more Dream,  for ORUL82?, they have their ever 1st cypher-BTS Cypher Part 1, Skool Luv Affair, BTS Cypher Part 2: Triptych, Dark and Wiild - BTS Cypher part 3: Killer ( feat Supreme Boi ), HYYH pt. 1 - Dope, HYYH pt. 2 - 뱁새, Young Forever - Fire, Wings - Cypher pt. 4, You Never Walk Alone - Not Today and now Love Yourself 承 Her - MIC Drop.

really, each album has to have a lit song to keep the whole album balanced. and honestly, i love this song so much because its goes hard, not to mention how it brings back old school hip hop vibes from the beat itself. why? because this reminds me of their older song from their earlier eras, when bts themselves were introduced as a hiphop group. dont get me wrong, i do love their styles now but this brought me back to memory lane and this time upgraded, welp. i love this ahHH. 

not to mention, how during the release of the tracklist, bang pd on his official twitter quoted the tracklist tweet and said ‘is this the new cypher’ but i guess he deleted the tweet since i cant find it anymore lmao.

but anyway, listening throughout the song, from the beat to the pre chorus had me sold so much and namjoon’s part, i knew this was a song that i would jam to no doubt.

why do i have the feeling that this may be inspired by seo taiji lmao, seo taiji is a ‘90s legend to which bts has the honour of performing with him at his 25th concert this year on the 1st September, 2017. if you know about seo taiji, you would know he is someone who was and is still very successful, easily dominating the ‘90s with his songs such as Comeback Home together with his group, ‘Seo Taiji and the Boys’ that included Yang Hyun Suk ( YG’s president ) as one of the members. almost all Koreans know who Seo Taiji is, that is how much his popularity and success is. also, you would know how selective Seo Taiji is in choosing the artists that he wants to collaborate and considering how he chose bts to remake his iconic ‘Comeback Home’ song to which there has never been a remake of it for 20 years, definitely shows how much Seo Taiji likes bts’ music and he did mention once in an interview how he enjoyed bts’ style of music.

but anyway, this is again my intuition of it, that maybe their collab with Seo Taiji inspired this kind of beat to be used for MIC Drop. not to mention, how namjoon mentioned that this song was inspired by Obama’s iconic moment where he dropped the mic at the Correspondent’s Dinner and not so subtly roasted Trump. ( here ). he mentioned it in the mnet comeback show, in the VCR and again in the vapp broadcast. this shows how namjoon is so aware of the other things in the world and the fact he could translate this into music, tells you something of his talent of musicality in producing, composing or even writing lyrics as well.

music: can we just admire the intro of the beat really, those scratches just like from old school hip hop. ahhh it feels great to listen to, a refreshing beat to listen amongst all the music that we have heard now in modern society, dont you think so? less on the electro synths and pop beats and just bringing back old school vibes. trust me, my ears were blessed to here some old beats, this time they were generous with the intro, giving some space before any of members start to sing/rap. that 28 seconds worth of intro, thank you bighit. from the blaring sounds to that distorted electric guitar to the scratches and then finally settling down on the main beat at 0:06, ahhhh, i really love the beat so much and i dont even have to hear the song to know how lit this shit is. not to mention how yoongi said in their broadcast how this song is based on strong drum beats, i mean i wouldn't call it drum beats but it sure is strong, but you could hear the snare drum clearly. 

trust me, old school hip hop is one of the genres that brings me real good memories so thank you bts, ahhh. okay lets start with hoseok’s rap all the way to 0:49, its pretty consistent, his rap style is neither hard nor laid-back, in a way its just nice to be driven by the beat. so the beat is pretty standard until at 0:38 where hoseok starts the 2nd part of his verse in which theres this rolling sound ( possibly something similar to gunshots but in sync but then again its not synth ). actually, between the verses, theres two particular beats that are of the same rhythm, however one is of a lower pitch and one is of a higher one ( you can clearly hear this from 0:17 to 0:22 which is the lower pitch then it changes from 0:22 to 0:27 before hoseok comes in )  the beat doesn't change to the pre chorus or when they're transitioning in between the members. but actually you can hear the drum beats that are louder on the 3rd count. the 2nd other beat has also a lower and a higher pitch, you can hear it from 0:29 to 0:34 where it is the lower pitch and then from 0:34 to 0:39, it is go a higher pitch’

the beat pretty much stays the same even till yoongi’s part at 0:50, with the specific 2nd beat of a mediocre pitch to an even higher pitch, i am referring to the beats from 0:22 onwards and not the intro beats. yoongi’s rapping is also pretty laid-back this time, taking breaks to emphasise on some of the key lyrics such as the ‘I'm sorry billboard, I'm sorry worldwide’ ( which i will talk later ) in which the spaces in between are surprisingly longer, then again when yoongi’s ended, theres that same sound, profanely like muffled gunshots to transition to the pre chorus at 1:13.

okay, let me tell you how much i love the pre chorus so much, the buildup was done exquisitely well. ( i think i love the prechoruses of several songs a bit too much ) anyway, taehyung definitely nailed this, even jungkook too. god i love the beat, with the introduction of claps inside, it gets you pumped for the chorus, like yes the buildup is here and all you could do is bob your head. ( damn right i am getting down to this ). but wow taehyung really nailed at this part, and then those few seconds after his line before it transitions to jungkook, specifically from 1:17 to 1:18, those kinda small growls and sounds of aggression, way to make the message more clear. ( oooh love this ) and again, you could hear it after jungkook sang his line at 1:23 to 1:24. 

okay so tbh, i was not sure as to who was singing after jungkook, maybe because of the pitch that i couldn't recognise jimin, in this song actually, his voice is not as dominant ( specifically his and seokjin’s voice ) it is not as dominant. in a way this part after jungkook’s, the pitch sounded higher so for a moment i thought it was jungkook’s but raised higher but now that i kept hearing it, ah it is actually jimin but i like to think there is some underlying vocals just to make the sound fuller, somehow i still cannot factly pinpoint whose vocals are underlying jimin’s part but for sure there is taehyung inside specifically at the last words of the sentence to give the impact ( Reference ) from 18:18 to 18:23, i would like to think that seokjin is underlying jimin’s vocals and when its seokjin’s part, jimin is underlying his vocals too. so after jimin’s part, the tone of the voice changes and the timbre too, but again, at first listen, i wasnt sure who was the one singing it tbh. i assumed it was seokjin as from the performances but as you know, sometimes the line distribution is different in the song than in the live performance.

take spring day for example. notice how throughout the song, there is no specific line of hoseok singing or rapping as he was the underlying vocals for the chorus? however in live performances, he has the opening lines of the song and the part after the 1st chorus before it transitions to yoongi’s part. so again like in this song, i was thinking this may or may not be true, so feel free to ponder over this. 

but anyway, i love how the silence is used at 1:34 with the lines ‘how you dare’ being sung 3x before there is the use of synth ( kinda squeezing it, or plummeting down feel ) before the chorus actually comes into full swing. but this time, the chorus is being supported with even stronger beats and the beat used at the opening. so i like how they have clear distinctions between the beats used for the verses and the chorus, so as to keep the attention going and to keep the listeners engaged at all times. 

now at 1:36 when the chorus comes in full swing, notice how jungkook’s voice is raised higher to match with the rise in beats, a clear spacing before his other lines. and then at 1:41 when mic drop is being said/sung, its so spaced out that it keeps the listeners to pay close attention to it before yoongi comes in and spitting fire ( its so tight - i personally love this line as it just hypes the song even more ) afterwards before jungkook comes in again at 1:47. ( tbh im not too sure who is the one singing here, because for a moment it sounds like jungkook but with some underlying hints of jimin’s vocals - again its possible that jungkook is the one singing but in live performances, they switched up the parts etc ) its with the same tactic of raising his voice to match with the raise in beat ( you could hear the ‘turn up’ and then the same ‘mic drop’ being repeated by hoseok though its less aggressive, probably to give way to namjoon’s verse at 1:58. also the pre chorus and chorus has those extra ad-libs of them screaming words, kinda to hype the chorus and song which of course would be heard again during namjoon’s part after the 1st chorus.  

they did the same thing of having those percussions as a nice intro to get the listeners to pay close attention again because here comes namjoon spitting fire again !!!!! his rap style this time round is more laid-back but he emphasises on certain words again to bring in the punch - you can hear the aggression and growl of those words. i am amazed. and when he says ‘turn up’ notice how the beat kinda stretched at 2:09, oh this part is so good, its what gives the song space and at the same time for namjoon to catch his breath if needed and the nice ad-lib of ‘oh’ at 2:13 to give the same effect again. and throughout namjoon’s verse, you could hear the same rhythm again that was used in the verses and when namjoon ends his verse at 2:20, with ‘mic drop bam’, prior to that, you can hear those ‘muffled gun shots’ before it leads on to connect with the prechorus again at 2:21 with the same pre chorus but honestly i think the vocals are basically jungkook and taehyung covering for each other to make the sound fuller. same goes with the jimin’s part and seokjin’s part afterwards before it leads on to the chorus ( i still cant really identify if its them fully but rest assured their vocals are there !! though i cant really tell if its the dominant one ) and the chorus comes in at 2:43 with at 2:42 its those muffled gun shots again. this time round, the chorus is mixed with jungkook and taehyung’s vocals with yoongi again and then the next part of the chorus being dominated more by jungkook’s vocals and then to finish off with hoseok again - a standard chorus. 

again those muffled shots at 3:06 before the bridge comes with namjoon’s narration from 3:07 to 3:17 with the bass being amplified, to back up namjoon’s narration - his speech towards the haters. then the bridge comes in with seokjin’s vocals and the percussion is being used now in harmony with the strong beats. i like the transition in this part - all of the vocal line having some lines to sing. - from seokjin to taehyung to seokjin to jungkook to jungkook to jimin to seokjin to jungkook ( the vocals are amplified more on those words that they want to emphasise on ). but surprisingly at this back, there is someone underlying the whole bridge - i have a feeling it might be hoseok or the rap line in general, instead of screaming the words or rapping the lyrics, they are just merely speaking them - just to make the sound more fuller. ( Reference ) 

here its not a repetition of the chorus after the bridge but more of a coda at 3:40 all the way to the end. you could hear that deep bass that is toned down during namjoon’s part all the way underlying this coda till it ends with that one long sound ( like sound waves of the reverberation of the sounds ) 

lyrics: to be honest, this whole song is actually pretty nuanced, amazing lyrics as usual. this is the reason why i say some songs even when translated into english cant get the messages across.

see here, hoseok’s lyrics already begun with some nuance using the word ‘spoon’ which actually is commonly used in korea to explain about the income status/financial status etc. of course the gold spoon being the one to represent the richest one. 

망할 거 같았겠지만 I’m fine, sorry 미안해 Billboard 미안해 worldwide

now yoongi’s lyrics, notice how he already acknowledges bts’ fame and popularity saying that he's sorry to billboard and worldwide. not to mention the line before that, with many doubting bts’ success especially in the early years of their debut, anyone who knows the kpop industry would know how hard it is to stand out and how hard it is to fight among the rest who are under more established companies etc. this idea of them possibly failing could be seen in their hidden track in which they mention how much they doubted themselves etc ( i will talk more about it in the analysis for the hidden track )

포도 = grape. in here yoongi is trying to say that for their concerts, theres no grapes. the grapes that he is referring to are those purple square blocks that you'll see when you try to buy their tickets online. and hence, he's saying that their concerts are always sold out. a pretty good tie in to hose’s previous lyrics in his verse. ( 섭외 1순��� 매진 = 1st on the recruitment list, sold out )

now the pre chorus, this just shows the many achievements that bts has achieved on their own with their music and support of their fans that their bags are too full. this idea is reiterated in the chorus again. ( 내 손에 트로피 아 너무 많아 너무 heavy 내 두 손이 모잘라 = So many trophies in my hands Too heavy, my hands aren’t enough ) 

Lodi dodi 아 너무 바빠 너무 busy 내 온몸이 모잘라

now look at the chorus - saying how they're so busy, that they actually need more than one body to manage all their schedules. not to mention how as of now, bts is fully booked till 2019 - its going to be a busy period of 2 years.

Which country are we going to this time? Spending hours on a plane

namjoon’s lyrics now, he specifies clearly bts’ success that they're going all around the world not just for tours this time round but even more to america for the music awards of billboard and recently, the AMAs.

지금 죽어도 난 개행복 = Even if I die now, I’m damn happy

this sentence shows how namjoon is already content with bts success as of now - clearly exceeding all expectations.

you can tell how theres the constant concept of ‘haters’ inside the song, their message to their haters and how they dont really care already. namjoon mentioned this before once in the comeback show if im not wrong. i love how they put their haters in check lmao.

choreography: tbh, you could tell that their choreograhy is influenced by old school hip hop. like from the very beginning with their intro and especially in the chorus in which they used the ‘kick’ move - commonly used in the 90s idol  groups.

their dance moves in mic drop aside from the dabbing ( of course ) are more consistent with bigger moves and more on popping as you could see. 

anyway, hoseok has really nailed this old school hip hop concept, from his facial expressions to his dance moves. but of course, its the Jung Team Leader.

look at this part with the maknae line just getting it with hoseok in the centre. ( im weak ) but i love how they express steaks with their hands ( how hoseok mentioned he’ll chew them up etc )

and this part, ‘clap clap, 매진’ ( 매진 = sold out, hoseok is referring to concerts beig sold out ) this subtle move is so line with the lyrics. 

now pre chorus, well, this move is amazing its like there sweeping the floor but not really, and that formation. its so smooth - how i mentioned bigger moves this time round.

followed by jimin’s part. those quick moves.

now namjoon’s part, well, the formation is one thing ( just 5 members as taekook would be preparing for their part which is the pre chorus )

and that slight small dab at the end though.

look at seokjin stealing the light right here and subconsciously, the rest of the members come into formation for the chorus. 

now this part is the coda but damn look at how hard hoseok is going at it. im shook, his facial expressions are on point - retaining the aggression that he has - look at how fluid his movements are. 

that subtle hand movement with so much aggression oh my 

and of course, the performance that end with mic drop literally. of course, yoongi is doing great at having this part. ( just like fire ) in which he ended the song.

side note: namjoon did mention that they bought a few of those $30 microphones to use when yoongi drops them lmao 

last thoughts: well, if you cant tell, i really love this song a lot, and hearing that they'll have a mic drop remix by steve aoki ( here ) and another one with Desiigner thats on spotify. im really hyped to analyse them soon.

im glad they had this song inside the album, its a well-balanced album that kinda reminiscence to their older albums that were more hiphop-centred - kinda paying homage to them. overall, well produced - musically and lyrically.
