In the textile industry, the measurement of yarn twist is crucial in determining the quality and characteristics of the final fabric. Yarn twist affects the strength, appearance, and performance of textiles, making it essential to understand and control this parameter. In this blog, we'll delve into the significance of yarn twist, the methods used to measure it, and how it impacts textile production.
What is Yarn Twist? Yarn twist refers to the number of turns or twists applied to a yarn in a given length. This twist binds the fibers together, giving the yarn its strength and cohesiveness. Twist direction is categorized as either Z-twist (right-handed twist) or S-twist (left-handed twist), depending on the direction in which the fibers are twisted.
The amount of twist in a yarn can be measured in terms of twists per inch (TPI), twists per meter (TPM), or twists per centimeter (TPC). The twist level affects the yarn's properties, including its strength, elasticity, and resistance to abrasion.
Importance of Measuring Yarn Twist Accurately measuring yarn twist is vital for several reasons:
Quality Control: Proper twist measurement ensures consistency in yarn production, leading to uniform fabric quality. Performance Characteristics: The twist level influences the yarn's tensile strength, elasticity, and resistance to pilling. These factors directly affect the durability and performance of the final fabric. Aesthetic Appeal: The twist affects the appearance of the fabric, such as its texture and sheen. For example, high twist yarns are often used in fabrics requiring a smooth, lustrous finish. Process Optimization: By controlling the twist, manufacturers can optimize the spinning process, reduce waste, and enhance productivity. Methods of Measuring Yarn Twist There are several methods used to measure yarn twist in the textile industry, each with its advantages and applications:
Direct Counting Method The direct counting method is the most straightforward technique for measuring yarn twist. In this method, a specified length of yarn is untwisted, and the number of twists is counted manually. This method is simple and cost-effective but can be time-consuming and prone to human error.
Twist-Contraction Method The twist-contraction method involves measuring the contraction of yarn length as it is untwisted. The difference in length before and after untwisting is used to calculate the twist level. This method is more precise than direct counting and is often used for fine yarns.
Tension Method The tension method measures the yarn's twist by applying tension and then untwisting it. The twist is calculated based on the changes in the yarn's length under tension. This method is particularly useful for high-twist yarns and provides accurate results.
Twist Tester Devices Modern twist testers are automated devices that provide fast and accurate twist measurements. These devices can measure both single and plied yarns, offering detailed data on twist levels.

From India to Your Glass: Exploring the Ancient Tradition of Kokum Agal Juice
Tumblr media
In a world where modern beverages often dominate the market, it's refreshing to discover ancient traditions that offer both taste and health benefits. One such hidden gem is Kokum Agal Juice, a traditional Indian drink that has been enjoyed for centuries. In this blog, we'll delve into the rich history and cultural significance of Kokum Agal Juice, explore its preparation process, uncover its health benefits, and offer insights into how you can incorporate this flavorful elixir into your daily routine.
History and Cultural Significance:
Kokum Agal Juice traces its roots back to the coastal regions of India, particularly in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Goa. The kokum fruit, scientifically known as Garcinia indica, is native to these regions and has been an integral part of the local cuisine and traditional medicine for generations.
Historically, Kokum Agal Juice was consumed by indigenous communities to combat the sweltering heat of the Indian summers. Its refreshing and cooling properties made it a popular choice for quenching thirst and rejuvenating the body after long days of work in the fields. Additionally, kokum was valued for its medicinal properties, with practitioners of Ayurveda using it to treat various ailments ranging from digestive issues to skin disorders.
The preparation and consumption of Kokum Agal Juice are deeply ingrained in the cultural fabric of the region. It is often served during festive occasions, family gatherings, and religious ceremonies, symbolizing hospitality, well-being, and tradition. The ritualistic aspect of preparing and sharing Kokum Agal Juice fosters a sense of community and connection among individuals, reinforcing its cultural significance.
Preparation Process:
Making Kokum Agal Juice is a simple yet intricate process that requires attention to detail and patience. The key ingredient, kokum fruit, is harvested when ripe and sun-dried to enhance its flavour and preservation. Once dried, the outer skin of the kokum is removed, revealing the dark purple pulp inside.
To prepare the juice, the dried kokum is soaked in water for several hours or overnight, allowing the pulp to rehydrate and release its vibrant color and tangy flavor. Some traditional recipes may also incorporate spices such as cumin, ginger, or black salt to enhance the taste and medicinal properties of the drink.
After soaking, the kokum pulp is strained to separate the liquid from the solids, resulting in a smooth and refreshing juice with a distinctively sour taste. The juice can be served chilled or at room temperature, depending on personal preference, and is often garnished with fresh mint leaves or a sprinkle of roasted cumin powder for added flavor.
Health Benefits:
Beyond its delightful taste and cultural significance, Kokum Agal Juice offers a myriad of health benefits that have been recognized by Ayurvedic practitioners for centuries. Here are some of the key advantages of incorporating this traditional beverage into your diet:
Digestive Health: Kokum Agal Juice is known for its digestive properties, helping to alleviate indigestion, bloating, and acidity. It stimulates the secretion of digestive enzymes, promoting smooth digestion and relieving gastrointestinal discomfort.
Cooling Effect: In tropical climates like India, staying cool and hydrated is essential for overall well-being. Kokum Agal Juice acts as a natural coolant, reducing body heat and preventing heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and dehydration.
Antioxidant Power: The kokum fruit is rich in antioxidants, particularly hydroxy citric acid (HCA), which helps neutralize harmful free radicals in the body. Antioxidants are crucial in maintaining cellular health, preventing oxidative damage, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
Weight Management: Studies have shown that the hydroxy citric acid (HCA) found in kokum may aid in weight management by suppressing appetite and inhibiting the conversion of carbohydrates into fat. Incorporating Kokum Agal Juice into a balanced diet may support weight loss efforts and promote overall metabolic health.
Skin Care: Kokum Agal Juice is often used topically and internally for its skincare benefits. Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties help soothe irritated skin, reduce inflammation, and promote a healthy complexion. Additionally, kokum's high vitamin C content supports collagen production, enhancing skin elasticity and reducing signs of ageing.
Incorporating Kokum Agal Juice into Your Routine:
Now that you're familiar with the rich history, cultural significance, preparation process, and health benefits of Kokum Agal Juice, you may be wondering how to incorporate this traditional beverage into your daily routine. Here are some simple yet creative ways to enjoy Kokum Agal Juice:
Refreshing Summer Drink: Beat the heat with a tall glass of chilled Kokum Agal Juice infused with fresh mint leaves and a dash of lime. It's the perfect thirst-quencher on hot summer days and a healthier alternative to sugary sodas or artificial juices.
Digestive Aid: Sip on Kokum Agal Juice after a heavy meal to aid digestion and prevent bloating. The sour taste stimulates digestive enzymes, helping your body break down food more efficiently and reducing post-meal discomfort.
Mocktail Mixer: Get creative in the kitchen by using Kokum Agal Juice as a base for mocktails and cocktails. Combine it with sparkling water, ginger syrup, and a splash of lime for a zesty kokum spritzer, or mix it with coconut water and pineapple juice for a tropical twist.
Culinary Delight: Kokum Agal Juice isn't just limited to beverages; it can also be used as a flavour enhancer in cooking. Add a splash of kokum juice to curries, stews, marinades, and salad dressings to impart a tangy and aromatic flavour to your favourite dishes.
Conclusion:
From its humble origins in the coastal regions of India to its growing popularity worldwide, Kokum Agal Juice embodies the timeless wisdom of traditional Indian medicine and culinary heritage. Its refreshing taste, health benefits, and cultural significance make it a truly unique and valuable addition to any diet.
Whether you're seeking relief from the summer heat, digestive health support, or a delicious and nutritious beverage to enjoy with friends and family, Aazol's Kokum Agal Juice offers a holistic solution rooted in centuries of tradition. So, why not raise a glass to the ancient wisdom and vibrant flavours of Kokum Agal Juice, and embark on a journey of taste and wellness that spans from India to your glass.

[clutching the desk in a death grip] i read through ten volumes of grant morrison's batman comics and i need to talk about their talia
so the question with talia is: how pure villain do you take her? and how closely do you align her with ra's? there's a lot of room to play with her! and i personally find her more interesting in a grey area of both villainy and ra's alignment. imo it puts her into conflict with him in a fun way, and nyssa is already here to represent the narrative space of Hot Girl Ra's. we don't need two of those.
morrison has talia genuinely care for damian and disagree with ra's on some things, but she still ultimately falls into line.
the comics start out by explicitly telling us that the night talia and bruce conceived damian was rape. ra's chose bruce for ra's's ongoing eugenics project and talia drugged him so that they'd fuck. damian tells us he did not meet talia until his eighth birthday. talia has tanks full of damian clones to serve first as sources of replacement organs and then as replacements for him, when she sees him ultimately align himself with bruce against her. talia puts a control device in his spine and has deathstroke puppet his body to try to kill batman. after she's disappointed by damian, she grows an age-accelerated damian clone in the womb of a whale to send after damian. then she cuts the whale clone's head off after he disappoints her too.
crucially, the whale damian clone is wearing a riff on a thawb and keffiyeh with agal the whole time, and talia consistently wears cheongsams throughout her appearances in morrison's run. the whale kid is framed as peninsular arab as part of what makes him frightening. the al ghuls are orientalized consistently (not only in morrison's run, but) to reinforce their villainy. oooooooh girl. oooooooh girl.
in the author's note at the end of the last batman inc volume, morrison says that they deliberately set up simon hurt and talia as the bad father and mother figures as villains for bruce, who's still hurt by his parents' death. within that framing, their work is effective. the goal is met. the problem is i think the goal sucks. 😔

DOR'SHAN LOOKS!
CELEBRATING THE WEEKEND with the kids of Dor'shan 😎
Tumblr media
Continuing with INKTOBER!
So, what do the kids of Dor'in get up to on the weekends? I often ask myself that question, so here are some of their many adventures. Part of a series of Dor'Shan Looks exploring that subject. Enjoy!
@plokoonsdisapprovingeyebrows has been updating The Keldeorin'yaa Conlang Dictionary and there are MAAAANY words in there now that work as names. Here are the ones I used this time:
GESINYA - "Aurora." / LAO - "Rain." / AN - "SIX" (Remember that character from 'Blossom?' Likely her birth order number in the family.) / GAN - "Three." Likely his birth order number in the family. / TOL - "Meteor." / YOIVU - "Omen." (PROBABLY A NICKNAME) / DIDI - Short for "Didibit", which means "little thing." Meant as a pet name for small children (PROBABLY A NICKNAME). / AGAL - "STICK, TWIG" (PROBABLY A NICKNAME) / HASSAO - "Sky" / NAWA - "Wing." / RIAM - "Snow." / KUBIKUK - "Murmur, mumble." Somehow I think the former would have been the intention.
YANSSIGIR - These are, "Whaleseal; the largest predator in Dor'in's oceans, a cold-adapted diving predator with grasping claws on its front flippers, reaching up to 15 M in length."
You can see preserved specimens of all of Dor'in's marine life at The Dor'shan Oceanarium.
Many thanks to @plokoonsdisapprovingeyebrows for the Keldeorin'yaa Conlang Dictionary. Read it here -
