Reverse trope
where instead of the Bats forgetting that they’re adopted (something actual adoptees do on occasion and is hilarious) they forget that some of them *cough Damian cough* aren’t
_______
Jason in the heat of a probably ridiculous argument: Yeah well YOU’RE adopted!
Tim just as invested in said argument: So are YOU! We all are!
Damian who had previously been quietly watching this unfold while he drank his tea: Actually I’m not
Tim and Jason who didn’t realize he was there but are already DoneTM: …… Damian continuing to sip his tea entirely unbothered: :)
Damian: Because I’m not an orphan-
Jason: ok, yoU KNOW WHAT-
____
or like in their group texts (that we know they have thanks to Nightwing (2016) #79)
*Steph changed the group chat name to “Bruce Wayne’s Personal Orpanage”*
Jason: Really?
Steph: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Steph: It’s the truth Damian: Both my parents are very much alive
Steph: Shhh you don’t count
Cass: Mine too Duke: Technically so are mine
Barbara: I still have a dad so there’s that
Steph: YOU GUYS ARE RUINING THE JOKE
Tim: Stephanie aren’t BOTH of your parents alive???
Steph: KNOW WHAT? FINE
*Steph changed the group chat name to “The Technicality Police”*
Tim: well that’s more accurate at least
Steph: :)
_____
Damian in his 10th argument with Tim of the day: That’s- this is-
Tim in full Antagonizing Big Brother mode: I’m listening
Damian -a Gen Z and best friend to Jon Kent- extremely frustrated: This is such Motherless behavior!
Tim taken aback: [voice cracking] W-what-?
Damian who didn’t mean to say that but doubling down anyway because his bloodline doesn’t believe in admitting mistakes: THIS! This is such Motherless behavior!
The rest of the family who is also motherless: :O
Cass whose been spending way too much time with Meme Queen Stephanie Brown and not involved in the argument but finding it entertaining regardless: [nodding along seriously] Facts
Tim: [visibly betrayed] CASS WHAT-
A video copy of the interaction gets sent out anonymously to the entire family. Barbara is the prime suspect but there is no proof as of yet (and they will never find any)
Steph, Cass, and Duke continue to respond “Motherless behavior” everytime one of the bats does something they deem questionable/insane. It is said often
It only stops when one night in the middle of patrol. Batman is in full Dark Knight mode (possibly in the middle of threatening someone) and descends from the ceiling into the middle of a warehouse drug deal, dark cape billowing out behind him-
and Steph just automatically whispers “Motherless behavior” forgetting her com was still very much on
She immediately realizes what she said and frantically apologizes but it’s too late.
Bruce just- Blue Screens. Completely stunned into silence
Dick -who was unfortunate enough to be the one teamed up with Batman tonight- is fighting for his life to choke back his laughter
Jason doesn’t even try to stop his and has collapsed to his knees from lack of air from how hard he’s laughing. Cass try’s half heartedly patting his back to help to no avail
The criminals are terrified into surrender from The Red Hood just laughing hysterically at seemingly nothing while Batman just Stands There
Damian ends up being the only one still functioning enough to continue arresting everyone, though he is privately amused and strangely proud
Tim and Barbara have saved both the com recordings and cowl footage to at least three different servers and sent it to absolutely everyone before Batman even recovers
Duke finds out second hand the next morning and is furious he missed the chance to see it in person. He declares he is moving to the nightshift so it doesn’t happen again. (He is all talk and goes to bed by 9 pm)
Bruce bans the phrase for life and promises swift and server punishment to anyone who dares to use it again
#Like it’d be so funny#Imagine them on mothers day#Damian at unnecessary volumes: I AM LEAVING TO GO TO VISIT MY MOTHER NOW#Damian: WHERE SHE LIVES.#His brothers on their way to the cemetery or smth: ._.#Damian still going regardless: BECAUSE SHE IS ALIVE#I just know Damian “Certified Mama’s Boy” Wayne would be such a menace about it#And Duke Babs Steph and Cass would so help fan the flames#batfam#dc comics#fanfiction#headcanon#chat fic#Can you tell I read them often#And yes adoptees forget they’re adopted#I have a friend who has on multiple occasions started to tell me about something that “ran in the family”/something in her family history#Before she’ll remember she’s not actually blood related#someone has probably already done this#But I still thinks it’s very funny#No I don’t think Jon would say motherless behavior to someone#But I do think he’d know the phrase and teach Damian#I just imagine he educates him on all the Gen Z lingo don’t ask why#crack post#100% a joke dont take it seriously

do yall ever think about bruce/batman!clone danny standing in front of his bathroom mirror after finding out he was a clone and silently tracing his face. The slope of his jaw and point of his chin. The high angle of his cheekbones and the shape of his eyes, the curve of his brow bones and the shape of his nose. The volume of his hair and the way it curls and gets fluffy when it gets too long.
His hair is black the same way a crow's wing is black. His dad's hair is black the same way a black bear's fur is black. His dad's eyes are blue like the ocean is blue. Danny's eyes are blue the same way a glacier is blue.
His dad has a square jaw and straight flat hair, and he tans and gets a face full of freckles when he's out in the sun for too long. Danny burns like a lobster and his face remains untouched. Danny has a sharp jaw and tall cheekbones, and Sam says when he's not smiling there's almost something regal about him. You would never call Jack Fenton "regal" when he's not smiling.
Sam says when he's not smiling he looks scary the same way a stone statue is. Jack Fenton when he's not smiling looks scary the same way that german shepherd staring at you across the street is.
Do you ever think he grew up wondering if he was adopted. Because of course, he has black hair and blue eyes like his dad. But having the same color doesn't make you someone's child.
Or, worse, things he's heard from the other kids and the other parents and even some of his teachers growing up; that he was the product of an affair. And that his dad was just too stupid to notice. And Danny would defend his parents until the day he died, because Jack Fenton wasn't an idiot and Maddie Fenton wasn't a cheater.
But doubt comes in with fickle tongue. his parents swear up and down that he is their child when he asks about either. That Danny just had his grandparents' features, but he was their son and they loved him.
But Danny doesn't look like either of his parents. His mom's eyes are blue like an aquamarine and Jazz's too. And they burn like lobsters in the sun too, but Jazz gets freckles on her face and so does Maddie. And as Danny grows up he doesn't bulk up or get stocky like his dad did, and when he hits puberty he doesn't shoot up like a tree like Jack Fenton did.
He stays small, and they say he's a late bloomer (and he is), or that he just has his mom's height. But he's fast and has good stamina, and some days it feels like he's built entirely different from his family. That the things they went through growing up just didn't apply to him. Jack and Maddie Fenton both had acne and breakouts when they hit puberty, and Jazz inherits it and he's seen the amount of skincare products she keeps on her side of the bathroom.
And then he hits puberty and breaks out maybe once or twice, but his skin stays clear for the most part and the problems and changes his dad went through just don't happen to him.
And the truth is worse than all of the lies.
How horrifying.

my hot pjo take is that Jason isn't a second Percy, Jason is a second Annabeth. Jason is just if Annabeth was a guy and also a Big 3 kid.
#pjo#riordanverse#jason grace#annabeth chase#CAUSE LIKE. THINK ABOUT IT: older sister is Thalia. raised at camp from an unusually young age for demigods.#adoptive parent figure is the immortal teacher of said camp. looking to prove themself. extremely knowledgeable#becomes BFFs with the spunky new kid who's a little bit of an outcast and comes from a troubled home#ends up co-leading camp alongside them. likes architecture and history and very passionate about fairness and law and such#but also is kind of a notorious rulebreaker but never gets in trouble for it#literally ends up put in charge of building stuff for the gods!!!!!!#THEY EVEN LOOK ALIKE. blond/e hair tan skin and stormy eyes!!!!!#Thalia lost her brother and then found Annabeth and went ''oh look. Jason 2. yeah this will fill the void in my heart just fine''#anyways this does make Jercy VERY funny. Percy looking between Annabeth and Jason and going ''mhm. mhm. yeah.''#anyways if you are a jason lover but annabeth hater or vice versa. look inside yourself...... you may just find. two. of the same character

I'm rewatching leverage out of nostalgia and some other emotion I haven't figured out yet, and I do think there's a story in "Maggie Ford Collins deals with having the most unhinged ex in her suburban book group, learns to hotwire a car, and gets her groove back, not in that particular order."
#nate's weird crime children (all of whom are grown adults) adopt maggie as their....something.#weird former stepmom? dad's ex-girlfriend who drove them to soccer practice once? loosely affiliated maybe-sorta aunt?#...this involves more lying and wearing tight dresses and carrying lockpicks than maggie's used to.#none of them listen when she says this is a job for sophie. they want to show her the benefits of crime!!!!!#she does tell her book club every detail.#currently said book club is trawling message boards and pinging distant facebook connections to get leverage their next case.#maggie is dating a nice art history professor from the local college. leverage is very disappointed.#nate is also disappointed mostly because he thought she'd pick someone terrible and he could ''''rescue'''' her.#unfortunately this guy is okay. he does no crime at all except sometimes taking a penny without leaving a penny#which the leverage crew did not realize was a an actual thing and therefore doesn't count.#......also I do believe that sterling and nate exchanged handjobs in a ramada inn bathroom once or twice#and that maggie does not know this but sophie does.#(maggie would not have been into it but sophie....sort of...is. she likes the mental image.)#leverage

There is a cemetery in the Netherlands with over 8,000 U.S. WWII veterans' graves. For over 70 years, Dutch families have visited the cemetery every week to tend to graves they have adopted. Currently, hundreds of people are waiting for a chance to become caretakers.

Not to rehash this discourse so close to his birthday but genuinely what other mysterious unnamed trauma of Jason’s is Bruce referring to in bftc if not csa? We know that:
It’s something that happened to him
It’s something that happened to him pre-Bruce, so it presumably could’ve happened while he was an extremely vulnerable unsupervised homeless child
It’s something associated with secrecy and shame: Jason only told Bruce about it and freaks out about Dick playing his hologram talking about it
It’s something that affected him profoundly, Bruce says it left him “broken” (ugh side note: hate this language) and he seems to get retriggered by it being brought up again
What other trauma is coded like this besides sexual assault? Like genuinely I have yet to hear an answer that fits as well or better
#Jason rehashed Mia’s entire storied history of abuse and assault and ended with ‘u just like me fr fr’ brother WHAT do you mean by that??#people get mad about this headcanon like people just pulled it out of nowhere for Jason whump but I’m sorry to tell you that Judd Winnick#and Tony Daniels did that first. It’s just a valid interpretation of the text I fear 🙈. And as far as headcanons go I think the backing is#pretty solid#Jason Todd#dc#I’m not saying that you have to adopt it into your headcanon I kinda go back and forth with it myself I’m just saying that the evidence is#there. I think some people just don’t have to stomach to think about it (fair I guess) while others act like you’re only allowed to be a#victim if you’re a Good Person (lame). And I mean Jason did specifically name rapists on his shit list when he was talking to Onyx in utrh#which could mean anything 🤷🏾♀️…#Csa mention /#csa tw /

"Since when do they have to get rid of their parents' names on their birth certificates?" -@kadencrafter78
Since modern adoption began. You have to understand: Modern adoption exists to hide stigma - the stigma of being a bastard / the shame of an out-of-wedlock birth, the stigma of being parentless and/or 'orphaned' and/or abandoned, the stigma of infertility.
When an adoption is finalised, the original birth certificate (OBC) is sealed* (in most states, from everyone, including the adoptee) and is no longer a legal document, and an amended birth certificate is issued listing the adoptive parent(s) as if they are the natural parent(s).
So, if Dick/Tim - or any of the other Batman-associated kids - were adopted by Bruce Wayne, their OBCs would cease to be legal documents and would be sealed, and the newly issued document would have a blank for "mother's name" and have "Bruce Wayne" for "father's name" with no indication (aside from, in their case, the very late amendment date) that Bruce Wayne is not their natural father or that any other parents ever existed. (Well. The blank on 'mother' would probably draw questions, too.)
That is how it works.
*Birth records weren't generally sealed until after World War II, coinciding with the Baby Scoop Era - and it was done primarily to protect adoptive parents from the stigma of having adopted. Not every state sealed them also from the adoptee themself, but all but 2 did - though now more states are opening records to adult adoptees again. These unsealed records are still not legal documents.
People I highly doubt would actually agree (or want) to be adopted, if they (the writers) actually knew what it entails:
Dick Grayson
Tim Drake
And I don't care what canon says (primarily because I'm 99% certain the writers don't know what they're talking about). I cannot* be convinced that either of them would be fine with forever erasing their parents' names from their birth certificates.
*Okay, technically, canon could convince me on this point, but it would be difficult and I would be very skeptical, but it is possible. Tim would potentially be an easier sell than Dick.

"i don't feel connected to my culture"
You spend all of your time online speaking in english, only reading books in english and watching tv shows in english. You don't go to museums or visit historical buildings in your town, you don't question people older about their lives about how they used to live. You dislike the folk clothing of your people because you do not educate yourself about it. You find tradition "cringy" or gross.
At some point you have to realize that no one will teach you about your culture if you do not seek that knowledge out.
#and no before someone says something this isn't about people who immigrated or were adopted#this is about people who complain online but refuse to put any actual effort into learning their history and tradition#op

More Parts of the Revenge for OFMD Fans
Part of a series: Revenge Master Post.
This post is about stuff in the body of the ship, going more or less from top to bottom. I’m saving the sails and rigging for my next post. If you want to know more basic terms like fore and aft and bow and stern, look for “Parts of the Revenge” in my master post.
Obviously, using these terms is entirely optional, since David Jenkins et al. are free and easy with the ol' historical accuracy. This list is for pedants like me and people who like historical and specialized language. Enjoy!
Main Deck
The low “walls” on the sides of the open decks were called the bulwarks—they were to keep people from falling overboard. On the Revenge, the bulwarks are topped by a rail (railing).
A gap in the bulwark, together with a set of rungs on the hull, was called an entry port. It allowed people to climb aboard from a dinghy.
The top edge of the bulwark was the gunwale, pronounced gunnel. The expression “loaded to the gunwales” is still used to mean very full. The top edges of a dinghy are also called gunwales.
An opening in the deck is called a hatchway. I wrote about hatches a while ago, but what I didn’t realize was that the hatch is the part that covers the hatchway. The wooden grid that lets light and air through is called the grating.
In the bow, the curving rail that goes from the figurehead to the hull is called the head rail, which would’ve been really helpful to know for my toilet post. Oh well.
Stede’s journal could at a stretch be called a logbook (or log). This was a book in which an officer noted details of the ship’s daily progress and journey. Probably a bit less fanciful than Stede’s version.
Weaponry
The Revenge has guns (the word used for cannons) on her main deck and her gun deck. Before a gun was fired, the barrel was cleared with the sponge, then loaded with gunpowder and shot and wads of cloth, all of which was tamped down with the rammer. There were different types of shot, or ammunition; cannonballs were called round shot.
To fire a gun, a lit fuse (usually a slow match) was brought in contact with the vent at the top of the gun—called the touchhole—to ignite the gunpowder. (The wick added in OFMD isn’t accurate. Shocking, I know.) The slow match was usually held with a staff called a linstock, tucked into a notch on the end. You didn’t want to be right next to the cannon when it went off, because there was a non-zero chance it would misfire and explode in your face.
Despite what you see in movies, cannons didn’t produce a lot of fire and smoke; the cannonball did damage by going unstoppably through hulls, masts, and people—often many at a time—like a deadly Energizer bunny.
The gunpowder was kept in kegs in a small room called the powder magazine. (A magazine is an ammunition storage area.) This room was in the hull of the ship, below the water line, to minimize the chances of a stray spark sending the whole ship up in flames. The shot was kept in the shot-locker, a small room in the hold (though this word wasn’t recorded till 1805). As we know, Stede calls this the ball room.
Besides the regular cannons, the Revenge also has swivel guns, small cannons mounted on swivels. These were too small to damage another ship; they were there to fire at boarders and approaching boats. Or, you know, to set off fireworks.
To take an enemy ship, sailors might use a grapnel (or grappling hook). These were attached to a rope and thrown at enemy bulwarks or rigging so the ships could be pulled together for boarding.
The Gun Deck
Everything on a ship had to have a special name: stairs were always called ladders; the floor was called the deck; and a wall or partition inside the hull was called a bulkhead.
Some of you may know that a ship’s kitchen is called a galley. However, this usage wasn’t recorded until 1750; the earlier word was cook-room.
Likewise, the mess is where you eat on a ship, but this sense wasn’t recorded until the late 1800s. In OFMD’s time, mess meant “a group of people who eat together,” like officers of the same rank or sailors on the same watch.
You might know a berth as a shelf or box to sleep on, like Stede’s (and Ed’s) bed, but this usage wasn’t recorded until the 1790s. The earlier meaning, used from at least 1706, is “a room where a particular group (such as officers or midshipmen) eats and sleeps.” So you might call Jim’s room a berth—except that it changes hands, and its name has been firmly established as the Room.
A berth is also a place in a port or harbour where you can moor (park) a vessel, and thirdly, the safety margin around another vessel or object, which gives us the phrase “to give [it] a wide berth.”
Finally, the area where the animals (remember them?) were kept was a small triangular area in the bow called the manger. This seems to be where the Revenge’s en suite is, at least as far as I can figure, but if you want to include the animals for whatever reason, they’d probably live somewhere around there.
Storage
Some of the stuff on board was stored in casks, a.k.a. barrels. These could be any size, but a large cask was also called a butt. A scuttlebutt was a butt full of water attached to the deck for sailors to drink from. Unfortunately, the word wasn’t recorded before 1800, and the “gossip” meaning not till a century after that. But it’s a great word and you should use it anyway.
A keg was a small cask, usually less than ten gallons, used for things like gunpowder or rum.
A sea chest was a wooden box used to store an officer’s personal effects—or to confine a nosy hombrecito.
The Ship’s Bottom
(As it were.)
In several of my posts and diagrams I said the lower decks of the Revenge were the gun deck, the orlop, and the hold. But my friends, I made a grievous error: the Revenge has no orlop. I know!
In season 2, for the first time we get to see what’s below the gun deck. When Frenchie opens the secret passage in the kitchen, he reveals a set of stairs—sorry, a ladder—down to a grim, damp space. The kitchen is on the gun deck, so this is the deck immediately below it, and while on most ships that would’ve been the orlop, in this case it’s the hold.
The hold was the lowest compartment of the ship, used for storage and cargo. It also sometimes held the ballast—heavy stuff (e.g., pig iron, gravel, stones, lead) put there to improve the ship’s balance. The lowest part of the hold itself was called the bilge or bilges—the area where bilgewater collected and had to be pumped out.
Episode 3 shows the water on the floor—sorry, deck—making it pretty clear we’re in the bilges of the hold. On top of that, an Instagram post by crewmember Will Giles (shared on Tumblr by @ourflagmeansbts) mentioned repurposing the “bilge set.”
Which all proves that the Revenge’s hold is immediately below the gun deck, with no orlop in between.
The keel is the structural piece that runs lengthwise along the middle of the hull’s bottom. Keel-hauling was to drag someone along the outside of the keel, underwater, as a punishment—very nasty, often fatal.
Also underwater, at the stern, is the rudder, whose movement makes the ship turn. On a dinghy you steer by moving the tiller, a horizontal bar attached to the rudder post. On a ship like the Revenge, you turn the ship’s wheel, which is attached to the tiller via cables, and that moves the rudder.
That’s all for now! Coming next: sails and rigging, in port, and more sailing lingo.

Punk isn't even a coherent political ideology which is why it's so common to debate the politics of punk and go "If you believe <specific thing> you're NOT punk" because many people doing this think that there is only one possible engagement and line of reasoning for identifying yourself as anti-authoritarian and nonconformist. But if you say this many people who participate in the sport of trying to define bigoted punks out of existence will tell you it is in fact you who doesn't "get" it
#talk#Many heard that theres no way to be punk without it tying into your political beliefs and went Ok so this is an exclusively progressive#culture right...?#So that they wouldn't have to consider putting in the legwork#Because they already adopted the Edgy Protressive Activist label#But well if you have engaged with literally .01% of punk history beyond knowing band names you woulf know whats up

On the topic of complicated whatever, it fascinates be that Hien is apparently only slightly better than Laios at reading Toshiro. I mean, theres the comic where she says she FEELS like they were pretty close, but the actual memory?
But look at what she's saying. She's comforting him (headpat) and probably trying to reframe whatever happened as something he shouldn't let him affect him so much, but really she's disregarding his feelings, isn't she? Look at his body language. Grasping at his chest, folding onto himself... He wasn't in a place to hear something like that and she missed it.
Reminds me of someone else who FELT they were close to Toshiro:
Hien may be too pragmatic to pick up on things like vibes, and strong enough that things slide like water off a duck's back. Doesn't mean she doesn't care though, she pretty explicitly expresses that she dislikes the distance between them as adults.
All this to say, I see two ways in which they can fix their friendship. Toshiro could learn from what happened with Laios and try to be more assertive when he communicates (learning about boundaries will fix him. maybe), or, they will have an argument that will probably be cathartic but also likely even more hurtful than the fight with Laios.
I mean, this isn't just three years of history, this is based on assumptions that they both made about each other's character that have gone unchecked for years. (And perhaps a side of likely power dynamics in the household).
If it hurts to know your friend from three years ago didn't feel respected by you, now imagine learning that your childhood friend who you low-key thought would ask you to marry him decided it was best not to open up to you, even though you as far as you know have always wanted to be there for him. And HAVE been there for him to the best of your ability, it's just, you're not the type to sacrifice your authenticity for it right? (wow reminds me a bit of someone)
A fight with that kind of baggage... I can see it being worse than what happened with Laios. Perhaps not physical, but emotionally? Worse. Hien isn't good at pulling her punches after all, and Toshiro lets things build up.
Would they be able to come back from it though? Hmm I think they would. If nothing else out of a sense of duty to the household.
#btw. kind of funny how Falin is the exception and not the rule when it comes to characters Toshiro ends up having a most transparent >#bond with. Like. Hien and Laios ok there's friction but also history. Namari who is perhaps his best friendship. all extroverts lol.#he also had people like Beni and Chilchuck around yet they're just acquaintances. lol. he really is the type of introvert that doesn't form#friendships but rather more often than not gets adopted into them#anyway#dungeon meshi#DunMesh rambles#Toshiro Nakamoto#Hien#Hien Dungeon Meshi#had this one in the drafts lol. IMAGINE AN AU:
A fight between Team Sonic and Eggman goes horribly awry, and the Hero of Mobius is killed by the doctor. No illusion, Sonic the Hedgehog is dead. Eggman is arrested and put away to await execution for his crimes against the world on Prison Island.
But none of that sits right with Shadow. Sonic is dead, yet the world still needs him.
In a desperate, last ditch effort, Shadow secretly gathers all seven Emeralds and uses them to turn back the hands of time and save Sonic, but instead of waking up in his apartment the day Sonic died...he awakens inside his pod...in GUN's custody...many years before. Shadow breaks out, formulates a plan to regather the Emeralds, then stumbles upon a lost and tiny blue baby hedgehog.
Shadow learns very quickly that the greatest danger to Sonic's life may not have been Eggman, and redirects his course to save him by looking after the hoglet here in the new present instead of jumping to the future and warning him. In taking in the little hoglet, Shadow discovers a new purpose and a new path.
It's a second chance, for both of them.
