The Airbus A321 is a Popular Choice for American Airlines Flights
Whether you're on the move to Asia, Australia, or Europe, the Airbus A321 is a popular choice for American Airlines flights. This aircraft is spacious, comfortable, and offers a variety of entertainment options.
Seats
AA Airbus A321 seating is designed to suit all passengers. Whether you're traveling in Economy, First, or Business Class, you'll enjoy comfortable seats with a high viewing angle. You can also hold your luggage on your knees. You can also enjoy a sliding screen that can be closed for privacy. You can also use DC power outlets to charge your smart devices.
American Airlines has introduced a new premium economy seat that offers extra privacy and more personal storage. The seat features a center console, large middle armrests, and a winged headrest. It also has a sliding screen that can be closed to create more privacy when traveling alone.
The aircraft also has a new suite called the Flagship Suite. It will be retrofitted to 16 A321T aircraft starting in 2024. This suite features a bistro table near the door, tray tables under the IFE, and privacy doors.
Cabins
AA's new aircraft will be fitted with a new Premium Economy product, but it's not the biggest news around. American has been flying a variety of seat styles, from Safran Concept D to a recently introduced seat from Delta.
One of the newest additions to the American Airlines aircraft fleet is the Airbus A321neo, which is the airline's first A321 in the biz. The new aircraft is a variant of the A320 family, and offers several new features. Some of the most notable upgrades include an upgraded engine, Sharklets wingtip devices, USB power for all seats, mood lighting and an improved range.
The new A321neo also features a new Premium Economy product that is likely to be a popular choice with travelers who don't want to shell out for business class. In fact, half of the economy seats will feature an extra legroom configuration, which will make boarding and exiting the aircraft much more comfortable.
Legroom
Depending on your plane, the Airbus A321 has 3 different cabin configurations. These include the standard seats, the First Class section and the Main Cabin Extra.
The standard seats on an A321 are located in the first row. They offer limited recline and legroom. However, these seats are close to the toilet and the galley. In addition, these seats have only 16.3 to 17.7 inches of seat width.
The First Class section on the A321 is arranged in 4 rows, which provides a more comfortable seating experience. The seats on this aircraft feature a narrow overhead storage compartment. They also have good legroom and top notch feeding. However, the seatback mechanism on this aircraft is limited.
The Main Cabin Extra on an A321 has 47 seats. This section offers extra legroom and early boarding. Some of these seats also offer perks such as snacks and drinks. The best seats are located in the 8th and 12th rows.
First class
Currently, American Airlines operates two aircraft with first class cabins, the Airbus A321 and the Boeing 737-800. These aircraft are used on premium transcontinental routes between New York and the West Coast. The A321 is the more modern of the two and has been designed with a five-row 2-2 configuration.
The Airbus A321 Transcontinental aircraft (A321T) is designed with fully lie-flat seats in both First and Business Class. It flies transcontinental routes between New York and Los Angeles/San Francisco. It has 16 seats in First Class and 20 in Business Class. It features a 15.4'' touchscreen in the Business Class cabin. It also offers direct aisle access for First Class passengers. It offers 180 TV programs and 350 audio selections.
The A321T is a very efficient plane and it is equipped with a Runway Overrun Prevention System. It also offers an upgraded ATG-4 Wi-Fi service. It has individual AC power outlets at every seat.
Economy
Fortunately, American Airlines has a nice selection of A321 aircraft for customers to choose from. In fact, it operates four different A321-200 arrangements. The A321 is a relative of the 757 in terms of passenger capacity. The plane has a streamlined business class section as well as a plethora of premium economy cabins. A handful of A321T aircraft also make the cut, albeit for selected transcontinental routes.
American is a heavy hitter when it comes to in-flight entertainment. They have a plethora of free perks including the ever-present Wi-Fi hotspot, which thankfully isn't on every flight. They also offer free snacks and drinkables for the cost of a boarding pass. They even have a business class lounge at some airports. They've been known to have some of the most comfy seats in the business.

2019 Aug – Utah Hols: Day 17 - Fri 30 Aug 2019 - Los Angeles to New York JFK
It was good to reach the Flagship Lounge. I headed off to TBIT and Gate 153 in order to pick up our second Starbucks coffees of the day. Vick secured some seats in the lounge and I was back in 17 mins, which I think must be a record for me.
We were called in the lounge to re-check, and the CK woman was there to say hello, and to invite us to pre-board at 7:30am.
Flight: BA4311 Equip: A321T Sched Depart: 08:00 Actual: 07:53 Sched Arrival: 16:26 Actual: 16:15 Takeoff: 08:07 Landing: 16:00
We headed down to Gate 42A about 40 mins before scheduled departure, and we only hung around for 5-10 mins before we were invited to pre-board. On into seats 6A and 6C, and we settled down for the long-ish flight to JFK.
We were welcomed on board and offered a mimosa/champagne to get the flight off to a great start. The business class cabin manager seemed really nice to start with, but it soon became apparent it was a bit superficial.
Breakfast was ok – steel oatmeal, but it wasn’t that hot unfortunately.
We both watched a film initially – Vick watched some period drama based just after WWII, and I watched the third film in the Glass trilogy with Bruce Willis, Samuel L Jackson etc. Bit weird – will need to watch the second film for it all to make sense no doubt.
The rest of the flight was uneventful. We both attempted to sleep, to varying levels of success.
We arrived on time in to Gate 35, and we were soon off to the AirTrain heading to T7.

American Airlines Is Bringing Back The Perk You Once Hated
The state of domestic air travel lacks so many perks that were now highlighting the return of once-free (and always derided) airplane food.
American Airlines said Tuesday that it would bring back free meals in economy class on some coast-to-coast flights beginning May 1. The news comes on the heels of Delta making a similar announcement last month, launching complimentary main-cabin meals in March.
American Airlines said free meals will be provided on flights between Los Angeles International Airport and New Yorks JFK Airport. Meals will also be complimentary on flights between San Francisco and JFK.
Depending on the time of day, passengers will choose from a continental breakfast box, a sandwich/wrap or a fruit-and-cheese plate. A vegetarian option will also be available. By the looks of it, it seems as though airplane food has gotten a slight upgrade in the years since it left economy.
American Airlines
What could be in that wrap sandwich box? Milano cookies and Lay's potato chips.
American Airlines
A continental breakfast box could include Chobani yogurt and something to do for 20 minutes.
The airline still plans to have food available to purchase. Some of our best customers fly our trans-continental routes, and we want to give them a top-notch onboard experience, American Airlines Vice President Fernand Fernandez said in a press release. Providing complimentary meals in the Main Cabin is yet another step were taking to enhance our service in this competitive market.
The meals will be served on Americans A321T fleet, which is the aircraft that has lie-flat seats in first and business classes. Customers can use sites like seatguru.com and flightstats.com to determine which plane they will be flying in.
The free meal likely comes as a real perk to customers in American Airlines no-frills basic economyseats. They may be the last to board the plane and not allowed overhead bin space, but at least theyll get to eat.

Rihanna Slams American Airlines First Class Passenger For Watching the Superbowl
Rihanna reportedly turned down performing at the Superbowl for its half time show in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick’s protests during the national anthem.
You don’t need to take sides in that discussion, or have an opinion on Rihanna, to find it noteworthy that not only wasn’t she at the Superbowl she was flying during the Superbowl — and from the looks of things, on board an American Airlines Airbus A321T in first class.

Transcontinental First Class...
Given my usual subject matter, this will be an unusual post, but it fills a need. In all my web searches, sites visited and pages read, I found all the major sites and even many minor ones lacking in helpful details comparing transcontinental first class services.
I have flown American Flagship First Class service from Los Angeles to New York on the Airbus A321T [1-1 seating]
I have flown Delta One First Class service from Los Angeles to New York on the Airbus A330 [1-2-1 seating].
I have flown Air Canada’s Business Class [which is their version of First Class] from Toronto to Los Angeles and Los Angeles to Toronto on the Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 [1-2-1 seating].
The service on United’s Polaris does not measure up at the time of publication [January 1, 2019] because it does not have a dedicated single seat service from coast-to-coast, opting instead for the side-by-side lie-flat seating [B757 to EWR is 2-2 seating, B777 and B787 seating 2-2-2]. Since I prefer a window seat, I found Poiaris sub-par because you have to dive into a gymnastics routine to maneuver over the other seat to go to the restroom if your neighbor is asleep. Also, I found the seats more cramped than AA or AC, even though there is not much difference in the measurements. Overall grade is a B- so not in the same ballpark as the other three in my estimation.
Ground Experience at LAX
#1 is American Airlines and their Flagship First at LAX. Even though you check in with the rest of the priority passengers, the proximity of security is better than both Delta and Air Canada. American’s system through security can be its own problem, but once through you have a dedicated lounge, separate from the rest of the priority travelers. It is clean, well stocked with a wide selection of food and beverages, from fine wines and spirits to bottled water and various juices and sodas along with finger foods and an assortment of finer dining choices. Between American’s Flagship food, beverages and lounge, there is simply no comparing the other two. American wins this one hands down. The passenger agents inside are truly dedicated agents who work tirelessly to ensure your trip goes smoothly and happily. American’s lounge at JFK was not separate from its regular lounge when I traveled, so it was crowded, not the superior fresh selection of foods like at LAX and not the reading selection to match its west coast partner.

JFK Lounge: B
#2 is Delta Airlines and Delta One. Yes, it does have the dedicated check-in for Delta One at the eastern most edge of Terminal 2 [it’s the first door], the signage for it is not as helpful as you would hope for this latest additional service. It was also not quite what it says it is. Delta’s on-line promotion says you can sit back and the agents will take care of your bags and check in while you sit back and enjoy a snack and drink. First you have to pass the first ground agent who makes sure you are eligible to use Delta One. Once inside, the agents are behind the counter, just like at all the other check-in kiosks/counters in the airport, and although they are arguably more attentive and personable, you still cart your bags around and up to the counter. It’s not that big of a deal, except the way Delta makes it sound, you walk away, they do all the work, and you get your documents and they guide you to security. None of that happened. I did get a snack in the small lounge area, and that was nice, but there was no special service to security, and the walk from the lounge was not long, but it was longer than the walk at American’s terminal. Now, once inside and off to the lounge, it is for every priority passenger, and even though it was well stocked and the personnel were attentive and brought drinks to you, it was still crowded and just part of the regular first, business or top frequent flyer experience, so nothing overly special, although Delta’s Sky Club does a better job than United or Air Canada. They offer a fairly wide selection of real food, hot and cold, and an adequate supply of beverages. My one complaint, other than the crowded facility was that the restrooms were not very clean and were actually out of toilet paper. When I went into the terminal, the restrooms there were actually cleaner than the Sky Club. Reading material was slight. They were obviously spending the money on the food.

LAX Lounge: B
#3 is Air Canada’s Business Class. Yes, it’s a new lounge at LAX, so it’s going through some growing pains. Check-in is like American, with a check in for all Priority Passengers. It’s about the same distance to travel from check-in to the security that you experience with Delta. The LAX lounge can be a little tough to find, but seasoned travelers who read and pay attention will be properly rewarded. Inside, Air Canada doesn’t do a great job on food and beverages in its lounges. It’s usually the basics - breads, fruit, cereals, snacks foods, water, sodas, juice, wine and beer with light spirits. In Toronto, well, it’s the same. Lot’s of room, but also always busy and the elevator can get busy depending upon the time of day and day of the week you travel. Air Canada does beat the other two airlines in one thing: reading choices. There’s always a huge selection of magazines and newspapers.

On-Board [from stepping onto the plane to exiting once the plane arrives at the terminal] Experience
First, all aircraft flown have lie-flat seats that are either one row on either side in the case of the A321 or 1-2-1 seating on the B787, B767, and A330.
- All three offered drinks before take-off, however, here I would give the nod to American and Delta because they used regular glassware and kept refilling your drink up to the last possible moment before take-off. Air Canada just got us one drink from a plastic container. All three greeted you in a friendly manner and helped you to your seat if needed. All three provide a pillow, duvet and amenities kit, to varying degrees of excellence.
#1 - American Airlines A321T - Attentive in-flight crew, menu was varied and like all American First or Business you can select your menu items before your flight. You can select the time you want to eat. The food was served at the proper temperatures, in a timely fashion, and was very tasty. The lie-flat seat was comfortable and any adjustments were easy to make. The amenities kit was simple yet sufficient for the flight and beyond. It remains tied with Delta One’s amenities kit. I am 6′7″ and the seat was comfortable and reasonably spacious. I did not feel cramped in any way. Since there are only 10 First Class suites, you get more personal attention that on Delta or Air Canada, and they made you feel welcome and at ease from stepping on board to walking through the door off the plane. Pillow was standard size and duvet was comfortable. The difference maker here is the slightly more personal care on board. TV screen is stowed in the back of the seat in front of you.
Seat Comfort: A-
Amenities: A-
Food, Beverage and Overall Service: A-
#2 - Air Canada B787-9. Not quite as good as American but close and just a hair’s breadth above Delta One. On all my flights here, the flight attendants ensure Business Class passengers exit the plane first, which is an added perk. The amenities kit is small but sufficient - not of the same caliber as American or Delta. Seat comfort was great, fully adjustable and easy to manage - even the firmness was adjustable. Seat cover, duvet and pillow were typical but the pillow was smaller than standard size. TV screen is mounted at an angle and can be watched easily at all times. Food was quite good, but on board service was slightly below and less attentive than American and on par with Delta. The food was the same menu served each time, but a selection... Beverages served throughout, and a small bottle of water awaits when you board.
Seat Comfort: A-
Amenities: B
Food, Beverage and Overall Service: A-
Difference-maker? It’s the 787 and its quiet ride, ambiance, and overall feel.
#3 - Delta Airlines A330/B767. Close to Air Canada... On board services on par with Air Canada, but the Amenities kit was closer to and likely equal to American The meal and snacks were rather good and you could choose your menu options shortly before a few days before your flight, and beverage service was on par with all the other carriers. Seat was reasonably comfortable and fairly easy to maneuver and adjust. Overall very little to distinguish it from the Air Canada flight except the plane itself and the amenities kit. Duvet and pillow were comfortable and standard size.
Seat Comfort: B+
Amenities: B+
Food, Beverage and Overall Service: A
If your business takes you to New York and you will spend some time on the ground, American is your choice. If your travels take you to Canada then Air Canada’s 787 service is your answer. American allowed access to the lounge before and after the flight, whereas Delta allowed it only before [as least as far as all notifications stated] on a layover. Air Canada did not require a visit when landing, and I’m not sure if they would allow you access.

2019 Jul – Phoenix TP Run: Day 6 - Mon 08 Jul 2019 - Los Angeles to New York JFK
The AA Flagship Lounge welcomed me upstairs and I settled down for an hour or two before my overnight flight to New York JFK. It had been an extremely long day, and I was looking forward to the opportunity for a decent sleep on my next flight.
My flight to JFK was supposed to leave from Gate 46C, and it became abundantly clear fairly quickly after I arrived at the gate, that it was going to be late - it took the incoming aircraft about 25 mins after touching down to reach the gate, and even then the aircraft parked at the wrong gate! It ended up parking at Gate 48A which was the next gate along.
I spoke with the Concierge Key man, who actually looked about 70. He was nice enough and he confirmed I was on his list, although he couldn’t pronounce my name! Reminds me why I like to be called Jim!
I was hoping that he was going to offer to upgrade me, especially considering how many passengers were on the upgrade list, but to no avail on this occasion - I would have to slum it in business class.
However, that same gentleman invited me and another passenger to board first, which at least confirmed the perceived position that BA GGL members are indeed considered the same level as AA Concierge Key members. In fact, let’s face it, AA treat BA GGL members better in that respect than BA do.
Flight: BA2408 Equip: A321T Sched Depart: 00:30 Actual: 01:12 Sched Arrival: 09:14 Actual: 09:36 Takeoff: 01:29 Landing: 09:25
On board in to seat 6F which is the front row of business class. I’ve whinged about dogs on flights before, but wouldn’t you know it - I got a bloke with a dog in the seat next to me this time. What is it with people taking dogs on flights? Put them in the kennels…
As soon as we were airborne…I converted my seat into a bed, and dozed off. It wasn’t great quality sleep, but it was better than nothing, and on the basis I was due to spend a fair amount of time in New York City later on, I needed to get a decent amount of shuteye.
My sleep wasn’t great, but it was better than nothing. I also avoided any engagement with the dog man. Due to leaving later, we arrived a little late in to Gate 41 at JFK T8.

American Airlines Teams With Casper for In-Flight Bedding and a Hipper Appeal
American Airlines' Casper-branded in-flight bedding may appeal to a younger set of passengers. Casper
Skift Take: American and Casper will soon be working together to bring custom-designed bedding to the airline's long-haul flights. A hipper brand such as Casper may resonate better with younger flyers than legacy brands such as Westin or Saks.
— Grant Martin
As the gulf between premium and economy cabins continues to grow, airlines are increasingly turning to onboard amenities to create unique distinctions between products.
Early in 2013, Delta started working closely with Westin to promote the airline’s “Sleep Experience” initiative, which took advantage of pillows and comforters developed in collaboration with the hotel chain. A big part of United’s Polaris launch, as well, took advantage of a Saks Fifth Avenue collaboration on the bedding design.
Now, American Airlines is launching a partnership with Casper, the upstart bedding company, to develop a mattress pad, duvet, pillow, day blanket, lumbar pillow, pajamas, and slippers for some of American’s premium cabins.
Casper’s mattresses, around which the company was arguably built, are ironically not part of the collaboration. Instead, Casper engineers worked together with American to develop a series of materials and products that better suit in-flight consumers.
That the company’s game-changing mattresses aren’t part of the equation may also be secondary to the true nature of the partnership. As a brand, Casper has fared well among younger audiences interested in simple, digital-first design (Casper’s mattresses initially only shipped direct from online purchases). As that same audience considers which airline to book from New York to Los Angeles, a younger, hipper brand may resonate better than a legacy brand such as Westin or Saks.
American plans to employ the Casper bedding on select transcontinental flights operated by the A321T, its three-class premium aircraft with lie-flat beds in first and business. Long- haul international flights will also get the updated amenities.
