As they left the restaurant, Reigen dropped a hand on Teruki’s shoulder.

“You know, this got me thinking,” he said. “Your parents are working overseas, right?”

“Yes,” said Teruki, with the sort of practiced ease that Reigen exuded at the office every day. “But I’m perfectly happy with the independence it’s provided me!”

“Yeah, yeah, of course. But I imagine not everyone sees it that way, yeah?”

Teruki’s mouth was a thin line. “Mm.”

Reigen produced a business card from his pocket with a flourish. The effect was somewhat spoiled when his foot caught on the sidewalk and he had to windmill his arms to stay upright, but the card floated over to Teruki’s hand with a flash of yellow and a whiff of ozone.

“All I’m saying is,” Reigen told him when he’d recovered his balance, “I’m an adult who actually lives in Seasoning City, if your school ever needs you to produce one. Standing offer. Think of it as a thank you for helping out around the office.”

Thanks for the tag @megan0013 Sorry for putting this off but I've been stuck in The Conlang Pit with no hope of recovery up until a couple days ago.

This is from the backstory of my 5e warlock Robin that has possessed my mind body and soul for some reason. The hyperfixation tolls for thee and all that, you know how it is:

Sun rose over Arabel, warm rays of light spraying out from behind Robin’s bedroom curtains. Robin sat on his bed, dressed in pyjamas and rabbit slippers, but the bedding untouched. He did not mean to spend the night reading the scroll, but after he’d mastered the mental acrobatics required to parse Infernal written with elven script, and the author’s shaky penmanship, the tale that enfolded had him transfixed.

The author was coy with certain details, whomever it was who had gone back over with ink to blot out any naughty proper nouns spared even less, and there was of course the inevitable words he’d never encountered before in his life, but with every piece he put together, there was enough to know that the hero of the journal, if it was as it claimed, was a tiefling. A tiefling who served an elven court as advisor of all things of the Nine Hells, and also, for reasons unknown to Robin, royal dog groomer.

Their name had been expunged from the records but Robin came to think of them as ‘Anachronism.’

The thing with the Mari Lwyd, though, is that it's being... I don't know, 'appropriated' is the wrong word, but certainly turned into something it isn't.

Thing is, this is a folk tradition in the Welsh language, and that's the most important aspect of it. I feel partly responsible for this, because I accidentally became a bit of an expert on the topic of the Mari Lwyd in a post that escaped Tumblr containment, and I clearly didn't stress it strongly enough there (in my defence, I wrote that post for ten likes and some attention); but this is a Welsh language tradition, conducted in Welsh, using Welsh language poetic forms that are older than the entire English language, and also a very specific sung melody (with a very specific first verse; that's Cân y Fari). It is not actually a 'rap battle'. It's not a recited poem. It is not any old rhyme scheme however you want.

It is not in English.

Given the extensive and frankly ongoing attempts by England to wipe out Welsh, and its attendant cultural traditions, the Mari is being revived across Wales as an act of linguistic-cultural defiance. She's a symbol of Welsh language culture, specifically; an icon to remind that we are a distinct people, with our own culture and traditions, and in spite of everyone and everything, we're still here. Separating her from that by removing the Welsh is, to put it mildly, wildly disrespectful.

...but it IS what I'm increasingly seeing, both online and in real world Mari Lwyd festivals. She's gained enormous pop-culture popularity in recent years, which is fantastic; but she's also been reduced from the tradition to just an aesthetic now.

So many people are talking/drawing about her as though she's a cryptid or a mythological figure, rather than the folk practice of shoving a skull on a stick and pretending to be a naughty horse for cheese and drunken larks. And I get it! It's an intriguing visual! Some of the artwork is great! But this is not what she is. She's not a Krampus equivalent for your Dark Christmas aesthetic.

I see people writing their own version of the pwnco (though never called the pwnco; almost always called some variant on 'Mari Lwyd rap battle'), and as fun as these are, they are never even written in the meter and poetic rules of Cân y Fari, much less in Welsh, and they never conclude with the promise to behave before letting the Mari into the house. The pwnco is the central part to the tradition; this is the Welsh language part, the bit that's important and matters.

Mari Lwyd festivals are increasingly just English wassail festivals with a Mari or two present. The Swansea one last weekend didn't even include a Mari trying to break into a building (insert Shrek meme); there was no pwnco at all. Even in the Chepstow ones, they didn't do actual Cân y Fari; just a couple of recited verses. Instead, the Maris are just an aesthetic, a way to make it look a bit more Welsh, without having to commit to the unfashionable inconvenience of actually including Welsh.

And I don't really know what the answers are to these. I can tell you what I'd like - I'd like art to include the Welsh somewhere, maybe incorporating the first line of Cân y Fari like this one did, to keep it connected to the actual Welsh tradition (or other Welsh, if other phrases are preferred). I'd like people who want to write their version of the pwnco to respect the actual tradition of it by using Cân y Fari's meter and rhyme scheme, finishing with the promise to behave, and actually calling it the pwnco rather than a rap battle (and preferably in Welsh, though I do understand that's not always possible lol). I'd like to see the festivals actually observe the tradition, and include a link on the booking website to an audio clip of Cân y Fari and the words to the first verse, so attendees who want to can learn it ahead of time. I don't know how feasible any of that is, of course! But that's what I'd like to see.

I don't know. This is rambly. But it's something I've been thinking about - and increasingly nettled by - for a while. There's was something so affirming and wonderful at first about seeing the Mari's climb into international recognition, but it's very much turned to dismay by now, because she's important to my endangered culture and yet that's the part that everyone apparently wants to drop for being too awkward and ruining the aesthetic. It's very frustrating.

⭐having stelliums can be interesting. it for sure puts a lot of emphasis on the influence of that house on your life, and i found that it can be both positive and negative since they face lots of challenges related to their house but also many blessings. those who have stelliums kind of embody multiple characteristics simultaneously

⭐sun in the 11th people glow when they are with their closest friends. they also tend to dream big and care a lot about the world. their friends usually help them in their future goals. they feel a bit different than people in their hometown/country, mostly because they cannot be tied down to a single culture because they enjoy different things, which usually makes them quite open-minded and tolerant. they can be picky about the people they let in super close though

Etta's Guide to Writeblr (March 2023)

So you fled here from Twitter/TikTok... Where to start?

Welcome to Writeblr! Pull up a chair, open those documents, and pour yourself a cup of your favorite tea, coffee, or cocoa. The first thing you'll want to do is start following other writers. Check out this post for recommendations! Search through the notes to find hundreds more. Since I made that post, a bunch of people mentioned they're lurking and still trying to figure out tumblr, so I thought I'd make this post to help people get settled.

How to set up your blog

Make your blog name something not resembling a pornbot - it can be whatever you want, anything fun goes, just not [name###]. If you include "writer" or "author" somewhere in the url it makes it easier to spot writeblrs at a glance but it's not a requirement

Change your profile to something that's not the default, Make sure you have a blog title, and add a little description in your blog header if you feel like it!

Make a pinned post introducing yourself (pls don't use your real name or any IDing information for privacy's sake, this isn't facebook), a short summary of your WIPs, and links if you have an author's website/newsletter/ao3/etc. You can check my pinned post for an example

Make intro posts for each WIP! You can spruce these up with graphics (canva and unsplash are both great free resources to make edits/moodboards), excerpts, lists of tropes, character intros, etc. Link to the WIP intro in your pinned post so it's easy to find! You can update these as often as needed

If you want to make character intros, go wild. If you can't draw, piccrew is a great option. Just start talking about your WIP!

Come up with a tagging system to keep your blog organized. I recommend individual wip tags or at least one for your original writing in general so it's easy to search for your work on your blog

Keep track of Taglists for your WIPs. Whenever you post a new thing about your story, tag the people who asked to be notified to make sure they see it! Only tag people who ask to join the taglist, but it's a good way to keep track of interest. It's normal to have multiple taglists for each story+ one general writing taglist.

How to make writer friends

Reblog their work and add nice comments, either in the tags, comments, or the reblog itself People notice regulars in their notes and appreciate the attention. I promise it's not weird to compliment a total stranger

If that's too intimidating, community events are your friend!

Weekly Ask Games: These are weekly events that are loosely themed where writers send each other asks about their WIPs! The most common are Storyteller Saturday (about the writing process), Blorbsday (aka Blorbo Thursday about characters), and Worldbuilding Wednesday (about the setting of your story). If you answer these late, nobody really cares, but it's a fun way to receive prompts and learn more about other people's stories.

Ask Games/Memes: These are posts with lists of questions you can reblog from other people, sometimes themed or listed with emojis. It's common courtesy to send an ask from the list to the person you reblog it from, then people can send you questions as well, so you can talk about your stories! You can search for dozens of them

Tag games: There's a ton of different types of tag games, but basically someone @s you with a challenge/question, you reblog with your answer, and then @ a bunch of other people to continue the chain. Some common ones are Heads Up 7s Up (share the last 7 lines of your WIP), Last Line Tag (share the last line you wrote), and Find the Words (ctrl+f the given words in your doc and share the results, then give new words).

Formal events: These are community wide participation challenges organized by certain blogs! @writeblrsummerfest is every July?? August? I think? It's run by @abalonetea a few years strong, and there are daily prompts and ask games! @inklings-challenge is a month-long short story entry for Christian writeblrs. I think there was a valentines event in February. @moon-and-seraph is hosting a pitch week soon! Since these are more organized, it's very easy to find similar blogs and support!

Misc. Notes on using Tumblr

Follow the tags #writeblr and #writeblr community to find other writers, as well as other tags that interest you like #fantasy for example

If you want to bookmark a post to read later, you can like it and/or save it to your drafts

The queue/schedule function is very useful if you want to space out posts or have a backlog to keep your blog running when you get busy. This is good for the community because it gives older posts a chance to be rediscovered! You can change the posting frequency in the settings.

REBLOG YOUR OWN STUFF. People aren't always on at the same times and so it's the best way to account for people with different schedules and timezones. If you're worried about being annoying, you can tag those #self reblog or something similar and other people can filter the tag, but otherwise it's a welcomed and accepted practice.

If your excerpt is pretty long, put it under a cut. On desktop you can do this by selecting the squiggly button on the far right when you make a new paragraph, on mobile type :readmore: then hit enter.

It's polite to add descriptions to images and videos for visually or auditory impaired people. If you don't know how to write descriptions, here's a good resource

In your dashboard settings, it's best to shut off the options "Best Stuff First" and "Based on your Likes". These function as the website algorithm and suppresses the blogs you actually follow, which defeats the purpose of the site, letting the dash be in reverse chronological order. Also turn off Tumblr Live because it's malware as far as anyone's concerned.

Curate your experience, block the trolls, and be nice

How to shut off AI Scraping on your blog

Go to settings and find the Visibility tab

Scroll down to the tag that says "Prevent Third-Party Sharing"

Turn that knob over so that Automattic can't steal your work for their language training model databases >_<

The other settings will just hide your blog from search engines so they're useful for hiding from nosy parents or other Tumblr users but if you're trying to build an author platform you can leave them off.

August was a total writing slump for me and I'm still struggling a bit to get out of it, but here's some recent Seaside lines fresh off the google doc from this morning:

Claire tried to imagine how she would have fared in his position; having Fergus with her in a war zone was not without its dangers, but he had been with her at least, the only bright spot in a very dark time. Jamie had missed years with his little girl. And how strange to look back on that time now and know that while she and Fergus were in France dreaming of a home, there was a soldier in Belgium and a wee girl in Scotland who would make that dream come true.

Hunter x Hunter's succession war arc continues to be incredible. I can barely fathom how this guy who is basically crippled by back pain is writing one of the most ambitious arcs the medium has ever seen. Like in one moment Togashi makes an author comment saying that he has trouble going to the toilet alone and then he goes "Yeah my goal here is to break the record for the most named characters in a manga arc". If I had to describe the succession war in one word it would be 'dense'. The amount of characters is staggering and they are all crammed into what is basically a single location. I mean sure - technically the Black Whale has it's different tiers but as the arc continues more and more characters are passing between them and plot lines are starting to converge. And the number of plotlines, man. The succession war as a whole, Nasubi's true plan, Kurapika vs Tserriednich, Beyond's plan, the fake dark continent, the mafia war, Morena's plan, the Troupe vs Hisoka - I could go on and on. For the last 50 chapters this dude has just been layering plot lines and factions on top of each other to create this insanely tight-knit net of plot threads. This only works because each individual chapter is also incredibly dense. I mean the number of words has been memed to death but people don't talk enough about the paneling. I wouldn't be surprised if HxH has one of the highest panel to page ratios in the medium. Sure Togashi likes introducing characters but he also constantly takes the time to show you their reactions in these small facial expression panels. He is a master of efficient characterization.

The succession war shows what can happen if you let a talented artist work without time or money constraints. This guy has produced two really popular manga series and his wife wrote Sailor Moon. At this point Togashi is only doing it out of love for the craft. With 30 more chapters now on the horizon we might actually see the succession war reach it's conclusion in our life times. It will be a herculean task to write a satisfying conclusion to this monster of an arc but if anyone can pull it off - it's him.

1. Do you people understand that he switches into accents when he reads? Do you people know he does a perfect Michael Sheen impression? did you know it’s also hot

2. He used to cold call publishers/mags to see if they’d publish his work. He’d lie when asked what other magazines he wrote for; they’d think he was more legitimate and would, therefore, be more likely to take him on themselves. “You couldn’t get away with that now” thanks to Google. Also, back then, “we had telephones and we used them,” but today’s publishers would not easily recover if you unexpectedly called them on the phone.

3. It was a personal point of pride for Neil to write for each of the magazines he’d claimed to have written for. He said “I didn’t lie. I was chronologically challenged.”

4. Neil made a deliberate effort to not be boxed in by publishers. He’d interviewed many authors who were unhappily boxed and did everything he could to avoid it, including declining big contracts from prestigious publishers (notably after American Gods). This is why he can write what he likes now. Comics writing spoiled him in this regard, as publishers mistook the medium for a genre, and therefore didn’t care what he wrote (so he wrote all the genres he wanted to in Sandman).

5. He hates Thomas Hardy thanks to being introduced to him in school. Regarding being forced to read Tess of the D’urbervilles, he said “I wouldn’t do that to a dog”. He hopes students, who might have liked him if they found him on their own, don’t encounter his work in school and hate him for it.

6. “The evil characters (you write) don’t possess you, you try to find the little bit of you in them….the little bit of you that is gloriously evil.”

7. “I touched the magic and passed it along” this was a line from Watching from the Shadows that especially moved me.

8. Terry was increasingly upset as the bidding on Good Omens increased (eventually reaching 150,000 - can’t remember if he said $ or £). For his part, when the book finally sold, Neil put on Iggy Pop’s Success and danced.

9. Anansi Boys should be out on Prime by the end of 2024!

10. Described Sandalphon as someone you want to “hit with a large oar”. (The woman next to me, who was extremely stingy with her applause, hooted like an owl at this and clapped til the last).

11. Pronounces Amazon as “Ama-zin” and Los Angeles as “Los Angelese”. This isn’t noteworthy, but I liked it enough to write it down.

12. “Being on a beach in bare feet” was the line that led Neil to realize David Tennant would be perfect for Crowley.

13. He is pictured on the ALA’s poster holding Wind in the Willows because, as a child, “it messed up my head.” He said he is “in love” with a chapter in the middle called The Piper at the Gates of Dawn where the characters meet Pan. It’s often left out of printings, which makes him sad because it is “strange, beautiful, luminous”.

14. TOATEOTL was originally planned to go to Broadway. Then, Covid. They did a “world tour” instead. Now that it’s wrapped, talks about Broadway are happening. He says all of adaptations of his work, this is his favorite.

15. “Disney’s Aladdin plays four times a day in Hell”

16. His favorite question of the night was “WHY did you think of the Other Mother?” He was tickled by the word choice of “why”

17. Asked the library in Sussex “What have you got in the way of really good horror for four year olds?” Obviously none existed so he wrote Coraline.

18. Talked about going viral for being in a falafel, seemed to marvel at the progression of the meme’s meaning.

19. “Tumblr is its own madness”

20. “Stephen King has fabulous stories about meeting fans in toilets, including being passed a book under the stall”

21. Read “The Day the Saucers Came” which I misheard initially as Sauces. Saucers is definitely better.

22. “You want to see me doing Dickens?” I laughed inappropriately at this. I was the only one.

23. I don’t want to say what pieces he read because I want you to buy tickets to his events. But it was very nice to be read to by Neil Gaiman.

It’s very worth it to go. I flew out from San Diego for this and would do it again in a heartbeat!

“This vampire can’t be more than a year or two,” Armand hums, “And yet already quite good at disposing of bodies.” Daniel frowns, suddenly ticked off by Armand’s impressed tone. “Not that good,” he argues, giving the corpse a resentful look.  He wouldn’t even call it a little good. Pretty fucking shitty, in his opinion. Hurried and careless. Daniel fails to see whatever it is Armand’s so curious about as he circles the body, nodding to himself. What’s so interesting about a dead guy in a ditch anyway? Daniel has done that more than a hundred times in the last year and not a single one has bees dug back up by the police. Hurray! Where are his appreciative little hums? Not that Armand doesn’t. Praise Daniel after a good hunt, that is. But still.  “The tattoos and birthmarks have been scrapped in case the remains are found. That’s definitely smart.”  “I guess,” Daniel grunts, shoving his hands in his pants. “If you’re into that ‘I’m a douchebag pretending to be Dexter’ type of vibe.” Armand turns his face toward him, perfect eyebrow arched.    “What? It just feels like you’re applauding a toddler for blinking, that’s all.”  Daniel shrugs again, non committed and completely fucking chill. He’s only giving his honest opinion, as usual, that’s not weird for him, right? Right. It’s just that apparently he didn’t get the memo that Armand would like him to play “Operation” whenever he gets rid of a body, but that’s fine. Daniel can pull out teeth and burn out fingerprints if that’s what his Maker is into. 

The gist of this wip is that there's a new fledgling in town, who kinda develops a thing for Armand when he seems him interact with Daniel. "Want me a maker to take care of me like that" type of thing, so he starts maker-courting Armand. Whole time Daniel trying to be suave about it while deep down all he wants is to be a total "I'm your one and only fledgling, I waited 40 years for it, fuck this!"-brat about it. Not like Armand even cares about the guy, but it still rubs Daniel wrong anytime a new little gift arrives at Armand's feet.

Luo Qingeng is not an impatient man, contrary to what his employees like to think about him. He isn’t kind enough to let idiots waste his time with pointless drivel, and he can get short-tempered with self-serving cowards, but as a rule, Qingeng he can wait for things that seem worth it.

He is not sure whether Procurator Jiang Yang qualifies as worthwhile just yet, but the letter sent to Luo Qingeng’s office certainly suggests that he is at least interesting. There are precious few men that would even dare investigate him, and Luo Qingeng knows them all by name. Knows their addresses, names of their children, where they meet with their mistresses. 

He doesn’t know Jiang Yang, however.

What do you mean I can't keep on writing enemies to tragic lovers in historical Shanghai??? It's only my tenth, I can stop whenever I want, officer 🥺

“How d’you feel?” asked Pike when her eyes and her pendant stopped glowing. Scanlan looked down at her hand, still on his bare chest, and grinned. “Like the most beautiful woman in the world is touching me, so… yeah, pretty awesome. Kinda horny, too, of course.” Pike drew back her hand immediately and snorted, her ears very pink. “Of course. Well,” she added more gently, “I think you’ll be fine.”

Early days!Scanlan is fun to write, for all I want to swat a rolled-up newspaper at his head. (also, fun fact: that last line is 100% wrong in the short term 🥰)

And it was then that Yin Yu finally understood with the force of a slap that it wasn't Yizhen who was a shackle around his neck. Much less was it love. Instead, it was his fears. His own darkest, ugliest thoughts and beliefs about himself, given form. That was the true shackle around his neck, the poison-tipped arrow lodged deeply inside his heart.

So I've been writing a lot lately (or, at least, way more than I have this year). Mostly working on Inktober and Hochstetter's Revenge. But, once you start writing and the juices start flowing, it's hard to limit yourself and stay on track. So I've also been writing a post-war story on the side. Like, they just arrived back in England three weeks ago type post-war story. Here's the last thing I wrote:

“Hey.” Kinch stopped dancing and she looked up at him, tears in the corner of her eyes. “We’ve all been scared, and we’ve all made mistakes.” Mavis nodded. “I know. I just…” “It all turned out,” Kinch said and, despite himself, held her closer as he started dancing again. “Just look around. It all turned out.” Maybe it was just his imagination but it felt like, as she relaxed, she snuggled into him. “Yes. Yes it did.”

Get ready to find out just what Schultz knows, a love triangle, and a race against time to save our favourite heroes and guards from a murderer!

Buuuuuut, this might actually have to sit on the shelf for a while until I write some other stories to back it up. Or I can just reference stories that haven't been written yet but are on the docket so when those stories do crop up anyone who has read this story will be like, "Oh, hey, that's what that was referring to." Dunno. I guess we'll see how it goes.
