Der 33-Jährige hatte sich um 22.30 Uhr aus der Jagdhütte im Gebiet Alp Munt nach draussen begeben. Chaschuana route

After my hike in Alp Trupchun last November I have been wanting to do it again and get up and over in Italy (as recommended by Brian Patton). To do this you need to get up and over Fuorcla Trupchun and the people at the park act like this is difficult (see here). I feel fairly sure they are overselling this (I did a fair bit of it last November and the scree did not seem that bad), but it was also closed when we arrived and we could not tell how the snow would be so we opted to do a route just next to it where you cross 200 m lower and, as it was a mountain biking route, it was clearly easy to do. We decided this very rapidly while looking at a map in the National Park Visitor Centre in Zernez and realizing it would be a long day (and we needed to get back to Zurich at the end and the next train to S-Chanf was leaving in 12 minutes. We bolted the train station and never looked back (in the end the hike only took 4 or 5 hours, whereas we expected 8 or 9).

It was grand! We had the trail almost to ourselves beyond some road work and some folks stringing electric fencing; it was mellow and gorgeous. We saw only one mountain biker who informed us there was snow at the pass which was very passable (very true, and actually all the snow was before the pass and just short bits of it) and then the top was jaw-dropping. Mountains forever. And all the signs changed to Italian. We passed an Italian mountain hut (refugio) and then onward into Livigno where we followed a series of flags through small villages. I thought we might want to hang out in Livigno but it was a bit akin to Whistler -- a mountain resort village at its development best. We booked it to the bus station and headed back.

And the bus was great! I thought we would go over Ofenpass but instead we went through Munt La Schera (after a speedy trip along the lake -- the bus slowed down when we passed the Italian police --and an enjoyable passing of the old border crossing, followed by Swiss customs officers boarding the bus -- leading to a gentle silent panic in J and me as we did not both have passports on us, but after interrogating the older Swiss couple returning with backpacks of wine we were brushed off).

November 2 in S-Chanf

Written in April 2023 (backdated post) … I had such an amazing time in Zernez that I went back to Swiss National Park for a day trip. I wanted to hike the Val Trupchun that Brian Patton had mentioned (he took it over into Italy, I did not – for one thing, the days were short and for another, the bus was not running to get you back quickly).

It was amazing! I set out on a frosty morning all alone. I saw lots of animals including goats running so fast down slopes so steep, I stood with my mouth agog for a while. A friendly couple gave me a ride back to town and I also found out (perhaps) why I could never find a place to sleep in S-Chanf – what appeared to be the only hotel under renovation.
