Zero Space started as a pretty simple hack of Slipstream, which is anchored very strongly in “1930s serial sci-fi adventure” genre. Which it does incredibly well. Arguably too well at times, in fact (which is one of the reasons I wanted to make changes to begin with).

As I’ve gone on making changes and developing Zero Space into its own thing, I’ve gotten further and further away from that adherence to homage. At the beginning it was just one small “non-era appropriate” change I wanted to make or add, but at this point Zero Space is perhaps radically anachronistic. I don’t know if there’s a word for “incoherent but in a good way, I think?” I think the tipping point was when I added a group of Star Trek-level technology aliens to the setting.

Anyway this is just on my mind today because I recently have a very strong image in my head of a Zero Space rave.

Which is just wild when last week I was wondering if Zero Space would put music on vinyl or if they’d still be using like wax cylinders or something.

Danny is learning how to shapeshift. It’s fun, really, and he honestly thinks it’s more than a little cool. Plus it’s not a learn or you fully die sort of thing, which is pretty cool too. He just erm, might’ve also made a mistake. A little oopsie. An uh-oh. 

Erm. So. Apparently stuff stays when you go from ghost to human form. Just erm. More… permanent? Look he panicked, okay! And it wouldn’t have been that bad if not for the fact erm… his friends might’ve done it too…? 

Okay, okay, this is fine erm. Oh hi Mom, Dad I- O-oh yeah! D-definitely! Psst, Tucker, what’s a meta…? Oh. Okay yeah- wait can they use this to avoid the GIW thing? They definitely could, right? Like they definitely can- Sam we need the corkboard!

Er. And inform their parents too… even if it’s more than a little obvious. Maybe they shouldn’t have been trying to mix and match…

Heartbeat

Against a black background, child Vash floats in Ship 5, curled up and with his thumb pressed to his mouth. Heartbeat noises sound around him, and he looks at peace. The background shifts to white and shows adult Vash, sitting shirtless with his knees pulled up to his chest. The heartbeat sound continues only to be interrupted by knocking. Wolfwood, from outside the bathroom, asks, "Hey blondie! You fell asleep in there?"

The scene expands to reveal Vash sitting curled up in the bathtub, shower spraying on the back of his head. His clothes are left aimlessly on the bathroom counter and floor. From outside the bathroom, Wolfwood, shrugging of his jacket, continues, "… The sand steamer leaves at dawn tomorrow so don't take all night. I'm not waking you up gently if you're late." Vash's eyes continue to look downward, glazed and unfocused. Step sound effects and a yawn sound from outside the bathroom before Wolfwood says, "'m going to bed…". In the tub, Vash sits curled up against a dark background, before eventually lifting his head and unfurling himself as the background grows lighter.

He twists around to turn off the shower and then looks at the floor, going, "Ah." He sits, thinking, before calling out "Wolfwood?". A sleepy Wolfwood replies, "…yeah?" from offscreen. "I forgot my towel!" Vash exclaims. "Ugh, look under your change of clothes… Knew you'd forget so I left it there…" a grouchy Wolfwood replies. "Gee, thanks!" Vash replies, a cartoony doodle of him saying "so reliable!".

Vash, shirtless but with sleep pants on, opens the door, towel draped over his head, to see Wolfwood, reclining on the bed. Wolfwood's smoking and holding his rosary, lit by the light from the bathroom. Vash climbs into bed next to him, towel still around his shoulders, and rests his head on Wolfwood's chest. His eyes close and then open to see Wolfwood watching him. Vash exclaims, "Oh! It's speeding up!, and Wolfwood bonks him on the head before saying, "Get on here since ya wanna be so up close 'n personal!". The two tussle briefly and Vash laughs before Wolfwood tucks the blanket around them. Wolfwood continues to smoke as Vash curls up against his chest and listens to his heartbeat, the background turning black once again as he smiles, content. /end id]

oh geeze, thanks! 💚💚💚 I'm really glad people enjoy my stupid sense of humor; mostly I just draw things to make myself laugh, and if it makes other people laugh too, then bonus points! usually it's just one joke or mental image that gets stuck in my head (every time I saw Fellow spin his cane, all I could think about was him go-go-gadgeting away on it...) and in my quest to justify it, it picks up other jokes and bits along the way and usually doesn't even end up as the main focus anymore. entire narrative arcs have spun out just so I could use a single bad pun in a throwaway line. this is a terrible way to explain it but I'm not sure how else to put it into words!

The next big editing job for my Zero Space setting is going to have to be the Aviar, a species of winged-humanoids based partially on the classic Flash Goron and partially on the DC comics Thanagarians. I originally included them almost as a “well you have to have this”, though also because I’ve been trying to include “flying characters” as more of a thing in my hacks, as it’s so often overlooked and, in general, badly maligned in the TTRPG space. And partially because I wanted a world that was just a big effin’ tree.

Regardless, not a LOT of thought went into them, originally. Just a largely generic “good guy race” of bird men. But with the Felorn redesigned to be more “hunter” than “warrior”, I’m left with a gap to fill and I think the Aviar would work well for it. I’m going to centralize their society a bit more and rebuild them as more of a martial power with a warrior culture and tradition, filling them in as the “major power” of Zero Space that used to be occupied by the Felorn.

I’ve also decided the Aviar had an empire of their own before the coming of the Imperium. As a military power with limited resources of their own, they practiced a limited expansionism and colonialism, building a Dominion encompassing maybe a dozen other worlds, including Aristos and Conea. This will help better establish the reasons behind the post-Imperium tensions between the major powers as well, as these worlds have to struggle with their own historical enmities and disagreements that long pre-date the whole “suffering together under an authoritarian dictatorship” situation of the past hundred years. While the Lopin of Conea are on relatively good terms with their previous overlords, the people of Aristos harbour a much deeper resentment, not helped by the fact that they actually prospered rather well under the Imperium. Serenga is pretty close (geographically) to Aviar as well, and the idea that the cat people and the bird people don’t get along well amuses me.

New Terra is within relatively close proximity to Aviar too, which might place it inside space they traditionally consider their own territory, which is potentially interesting. Earthlings and the Imperator arrived in Zero Space at around the same time, and the establishment of New Terra so close to Aviar space was probably only possible because they were already distracted by the bigger threat.

As a fun note, the Aviar were originally called the Aerions, until I found out what that sounds like when you say it out loud.
