One thing that kills me about Alyou is that for their relationship to develop you kind of have to address and utilize the isolation that goes unsaid in the game.
Like, we know Robin isn’t some social outcast. She enjoyed her work and was pretty outgoing. The only live interaction we get to see with another human is with Hal where he says she’ll be missed. She quite literally abandons everything to investigate Sam’s death on a harsh alien planet on the far reaches of the galaxy. She chooses to make herself an outcast. Anyone close to her that hears that is counting the days before she’s assumed dead and missing.
Al-an on the other hand is actively seeking his own people. The entire game is him looking for the other precursors, a goal we can only assume extends well beyond the game. Of which for Robin we can only assume two outcomes: they find the architects within her lifespan or they don’t.
If they do find the architects, how does their relationship fair? Does Robin get sent back to human civilization a hero to architects but a nobody to her own people? There’s no guarantee if she wrote about the precursors anyone would even believe her. Or, doing so makes her and the architects a target for Alterra. There’s no guarantee she’d ever be able to find a job she loved ever again, or, best case scenario her writings about the species make her famous. What then? Sure she might have money and fame, but she’ll no doubt never be able to talk to Al-an again with loads of questions still unanswered.
But what if Robin brings Al-an with her back to the human world? She doesn’t seem to have a lot of faith in humans not acting terrible, trying everything from putting him in a cage to keeping him as a trophy. He might get a kick out of being a science subject at first, but we know he’s not quick to make friends. Maybe he shares some advancements with the humans? If he trusts them that is.
The same goes in reverse in what if Robin stays for some time with architect society? They’d no doubt want to learn everything they could about humans resources willing. However it took Al-an a whole game to understand the nuances of human socialization before they even let him near one. I can’t imagine Robin being comfortable in a whole society full of very tall, very advanced, and very nosey aliens. Best case scenario Al-an shares his etiquette and respect with the other architects or they mostly ignore her. Even with this outcome Robin is still in a world not built for her in mind. She can still make friends with the architects, but they’d no doubt feel clinically asocial.
Then of course the third option, both are fully isolated. They neither find the architects and Robin chooses not to return to human civilization. They both have eachother to keep company, but they’ll always be alone. Humans are designed to seek other humans, and architects no doubt feel the same being social creatures. Sure one another might be “good enough” but there will always be that unmistakable feeling of solitude. Alone together, till one of them dies.
Then what? Does the other move on, driven purely by their desire for scientific conquest on the far reaches of the stars? Adopt a pet and live their life alone like Maida?
The closest thing to a perfect ending is that both the architects are alive and Robin chooses to return to human civilization, but both species are able to build a good working relationship. Both Al-an and Robin are regarded as heroes on both sides and still have the ability to talk every once in awhile. It would be really neat to see precursors join the supporting cast for subnautica 2, being our access port for advanced tech. But then us Rob-an shippers have to face the idea that their relationship would probably end with just friendship or both would still be ostracized for being weirdos
In any solution though there has to be some compromise. A perfect ending isn’t necessarily possible.
This is why I think Alyou should officially be classified as tragic yuri send tweet

Why does Star Trek seem to never hit its mark?
Even today most people argue about who's a better captain; Picard or Kirk? And downsize just about every other franchise in the catalog.
Sure, the JJ Abrams Reboot was a fun action flick, but was it Star Trek? Then Seth McFarlane creates "The Orville". A seeming Parody of Star Trek, yet seemingly capturing all the elements that make Star Trek enjoyable to their fans.
Better even than most of the modern Star Treks.
I want to say here; Except ST:Picard, but I haven't watched it. It seems to capture the essence as well from outside of the Star Fleet lens.
What is it that makes Star Trek, Star Trek?
Well Roddenberry, like many men during the World War eras (and similar to Tolkien,) was in the military. Roddenberry was a pilot with the US Army Air Force.
And like many series of the time age, created a series that encapsulated his experiences with the military.
What makes Star Trek is enjoyable to what makes shows like M.A.S.H., Mission Impossible, and G.I. Joe enjoyable. Or Military films like "Red October", "Yuri", and even "A Few Good Men".
It's confused as a Space Drama, or a Space Western, when in reality; Star Trek is a military drama *set* in space.
As such, what makes the series special is not the conflict that the people are going through; but the interpersonal relationships and how the conflict affects the cast physically and mentally.
Sure there's "sci-fi tech" and shenanigans as filler. But it's always from that Military Drama perspective.
This and this Age of Exploration that the U.S.S enterprise represents harkens back to early American fiction about exploring the wild West of America. Like Lewis and Clark.
And even takes inspiration from Epics like Xena and Hercules.
Star Trek does two things for audience members. It makes them want to explore the stars. And, it makes palatable the conflicts we experience in present day earth, by remapping them to what if space scenarios.
And the focus is always on trying to find Diplomatic solutions.
Deep Space Nine was all about the later, but suffered from isolation, due to the nature of the space station. And never quote explored what it was like to feel isolated from the rest of Star Fleet.
By isolated I mean, a more home station feeling. Or even an overseas military base.
Voyager explored this isolation, but only because they were sent to the other side of the universe. And because they were on their way *home* viewed exploration as an obstacle to overcome. Instead of the expansive possibilities exploration brings, the crew is trying to return to the comfort of home.
And yet; trying to substitute the comforts of home with what they have. This is similar to a roving band of exiles, or people that have lost their home to warfare.
And yet; despite being one of my favorite Treks, still misses the mark because it often forgets what it's doing.
What makes Star Trek, Star Trek, is that it's a Military Drama in an Era of supposed peace. And exploring the conflicts that arise during peace, trying to avoid conflict as diplomaticly as possible.

What Role Does AI Play in Driving Business Growth?
Enhancing Customer Experience: Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a pivotal role in driving business growth by enhancing customer experience. According to Yuri, AI-driven tools can analyze customer data to provide personalized experiences, predict customer needs, and offer proactive solutions. Additionally, AI-driven analytics provide actionable insights, enabling businesses to make data-driven decisions that foster growth.
How Can Sales Enablement Boost Team Performance?
Providing the Right Tools and Training: Sales enablement is critical for boosting team performance. Yuri Fiaschi stresses the importance of equipping sales teams with the right tools and training. This includes access to customer data, sales playbooks, and training programs that enhance skills and knowledge. Well-equipped teams are more confident and effective in their roles.

Clear objectives provide direction and focus for both revenue and GTM strategies.
Ensuring Cross-Functional Collaboration: Yuri also stresses the importance of cross-functional collaboration. Aligning revenue and GTM strategies requires input and cooperation from various departments, including sales, marketing, product development, and customer service. This collaboration ensures that all aspects of the strategy are cohesive and mutually supportive.

Since you guys seemed to enjoy the idea of Kaede being Yuri's intern at Justice Bureau... ;)
Kaede graduates from Hero Academy and decides not to pursue her father's career. Instead, fascinated and inspired by Yuri's relentless work in the justice field, she finds her way in Law School and aspires to become a lawyer or maybe even a judge one day.
Before obtaining her Law Degree she must do an internship for the duration of one year and she ends up being Yuri's intern.
Chaos ensues.
(More headcanons under the cut)
- By this time Kotetsu and Barnaby are officially a couple and they keep working as heroes for Apollon Media.
- At a certain point while attending Hero Academy Kaede moved living with them. Her crush for Barnaby completely faded once she started to actually see him as a father figure and not as a celebrity.
- When she graduated she moved to a small apartment on her own. She isn't a messy person and likes to keep her spaces tidy, but she's still Kotetsu's daughter.
She inherited Bunny's love for houseplants, but since she's always busy she opted for succulents since they require less dedication.
- When she starts her internship she's 23 and Yuri is 41.
At the beginning Yuri was reluctant to accept Kaede as his intern mainly because of his previous experiences with Kaburagi senior, but he soon grew quite fond of her and truly believes she has a talent for the job.
- Kaede is the only person in the entire world that Yuri addresses informally.
This only happens behind closed doors, though. When in formal situations they keep a formal demeanor, but as soon as they are alone again, she is Kaede-chan for him and she just calls him Yuri.
- Even if she generally comes across as a sweet and caring girl, Kaede has developed a dry and witty sense of humor. When she and Yuri are in the same room the levels of sassiness skyrocket.
- As far as her NEXT powers are concerned, she still has a difficult time in managing them. When she was still in the Academy, Kotetsu and Barnaby asked Saitou-san to try and find some kind of solution for her problem and he came up with a pair of biker gloves made of a special hi-tech fabric that inhibits her powers so that she can touch people and live a fairly normal life.
- She isn't very tall and she feels a bit insecure about it, so she always makes sure to wear high heels. Regarding her appearance, she likes to keep herself physically trained and attends a gym with Saroja. She usually goes shopping with Karina and asks for her fashion advices. She likes to look cute, but she's not particularly into makeup.

Part 1
I’ve got another Ryuji/Jin-Woo fic idea in an au world.
Let’s start with the setting: It’s a low tech world where everyone has magic. There’s no cars or computers, but they have magic-powered appliances like fridges and blenders. And the continent is broken up into different kingdoms.
Magic beasts roam the world, though I’m still debating whether it’ll be a natural occurrence or a result of gates. Could be a mix of both. Either way, it means they need Adventurers or Knights to deal with said creatures and protect the public.
In this world, people can grow their magical potential through training, though once they get to a certain point, it becomes harder to advance. Like, everyone naturally has a plateau point where it becomes harder to get stronger, and it’s different for everyone.
This story centers around Jin-Woo and Ryuji, who are Knights in King Go Gun-Hee’s army. Ryuji is the General (the top position) and Jin-Woo would be a...Captain? I imagine the top ranks going Captain, Commander, General.
At this point, Jin-Woo is in his twenties and stronger than Ryuji, which is why he’s gotten Captain rank already. But the King (who’s in charge of top ranking promotions) wants his Commander class to have more experience leading missions.
So, I imagine the backstory of this being that Jin-Woo joined the military when he was 16 (the youngest that they’re allowed). He was in training for two years, where he occasionally ran into Ryuji and developed a bit of a crush.
At 18, he started going on missions, protecting civilians from magical beasts. He discovered that he has a beast taming skill (somewhat rare!), which got the King’s attention. The stronger someone’s magic is, the more beasts they can tame, so the King assigned some tutors to him, to focus attention on training his magic to grow.
It even got him Ryuji’s attention, who likes to recruit strong Knights into his division. (Commanders have their own divisions and Captains have teams. The general has his own division too, but he’s also in charge of the entire army.)
So, Ryuji and Jin-Woo started training sometimes and going on missions together. By the time Jin-Woo is twenty, his small crush has turned into full blown infatuation and love. But he never makes a move, because Ryuji is known for sleeping around. (Not necessarily deep commitment issues like in ‘My love is a fire’ but he just doesn’t pursue people for long-term relationships. Open to the possibility, but he doesn’t go looking for love.)
Ryuji is also known for how proud he is of being the strongest fighter in the country. He doesn’t like competition. (Rumors even fly that he’ll try to take the crown when Go Gun-Hee passes, whether he’s named heir or not).
At first, Ryuji isn’t threatened by Jin-Woo’s growing strength, just excited for another strong fighter under his command. But then Jin-Woo passes his second in command and he starts getting worried. Then agitated.
Jin-Woo notices what's going on, but even with him trying to hide how fast his power is growing, it quickly becomes obvious when he surpasses Ryuji. It completely sours their growing mentor/mentee relationship.
Ryuji grows resentful of Jin-Woo’s power, jealous and threatened that someone is stronger than him. He can’t entirely avoid Jin-Woo, not when they’re sometimes the best two for a mission, but he puts distance between them.
Jin-Woo is not happy about that at all. He tries being nice at first, but when that doesn’t work, he tries out various ways to get Ryuji’s attention. (Like with kids, negative attention is better than no attention at all.)
He’s never deliberately rude, as he doesn’t want Ryuji’s dislike of him to grow, but he starts trying to banter with him. Finding what will make Ryuji respond, maybe bringing out his competitive side.
Though what they’ll compete about, I’m not sure. It can’t be purely physical activities that Jin-Woo could brute force his way through with strength. But maybe skill-based activities that Ryuji has just as much chance of winning, especially since he’s older and has tried out more things?
But their competitions won’t be the main focus of the fic, so I won’t spend too much time mulling over that.
So, the main timeline of the fic will be when Ryuji is in his forties and Jin-Woo is in his late twenties. I’ll probably have a chapter or two for the backstory, then get into the main plot.
I’m still working on some of the exact details, but let’s say there’s some tension with a neighboring country. They’ve had some skirmishes with them and Go Gun Hee’s efforts at diplomacy aren’t yielding much results, so it looks like a war might be brewing.
Ryuji decides that this is a golden opportunity. He’s been wanting to rule for a while now, but he has doubts that Go Gun-Hee will name him as heir and trying to forcibly take over after his death will have its own complications. Maybe he doesn’t want to spark a civil war in his birth country?
So, he decides that he wants to take over this ‘enemy’ nation. But how to do so?
He’s got some strong, loyal allies who might be willing to help out. (The S-ranks that were in his guild in the canon world.) They’ll be fighting the enemy soldiers, anyway, but they would need enough power to get a foothold into the country. To make their way to the capitol city and defeat that nation’s ruler.
His mind flashes to Sung’s beast taming ability, envious. If he had that skill, he could create an army of loyal soldiers. And then inspiration strikes. Just because he doesn’t have the ability, doesn’t mean he can’t make use of it. But how to get Sung on board?
He’s known Jin-Woo long enough to know that he has his own moral code. One that might balk at disposing of a foreign royal to put someone he doesn’t get along with in charge. (He doesn’t yet realize that the rivalry with Jin-Woo is one-sided.)
So, the odds of him convincing Sung to help him take over a country seem low. He goes looking through his library, searching for possibilities.
In this world, people can have a wide range of gifts, some that need specific circumstances to unlock. So, he’s been collecting books about obscure magic, both to see if he might have some of these gifts, and to know what to test his loyal people for. To see if they have any useful gifts that can be unlocked.
And he comes across a very rare form of magic, a type of control magic. Not mind control, but using mana to control another person’s actions. But it’s not something that can be learned.
Ryuji almost gives up on the idea, until he reads a detail that some with this gift can enchant an object to act as a control object, and the control of said object’s abilities can be transferred to another.
[That was a clunky way of saying it, but it’s basically this. Person with ability enchants collar. Gives control of collar to Ryuji. Now whoever’s wearing the collar will be forced to obey Ryuji.]
It seems like the perfect solution, but how does he find one of these people?
With a great deal of searching. Luckily, he does have a network of people that he can ask to keep an ear out for rumors of someone with this gift.
When he hears of something that seems promising, he goes on a trip and finds someone with that gift. [It probably won’t be from his pov, though. Jin-Woo will just notice that he’s gone for a while.]
And when he comes back
.he somehow gets the collar on Jin-Woo.
Somehow.
I haven’t figured that part out yet.
Tricks him into it, maybe? Makes a bet with him?
Perhaps the collar will latch onto Jin-Woo’s neck if Ryuji gets it close enough.
The collar is powered through the wearer’s own mana, so Jin-Woo can’t just overpower it. Supposedly. In reality, Jin-Woo gets the sense that he could overpower it. (The same way the giants in canon were able to overpower that barrier Yuri Orlov put up.)
But Jin-Woo holds off on trying to break free because he wants to know what the heck Ryuji wants badly enough to put a slave collar on him. (Sadly for Jin-Woo, Ryuji is only focused on getting an army and not anything...else.)
And I think I’ll have part 1 end here, with part 2 being on pillowfort. Because Jin-Woo’s reaction to the collar isn’t exactly PG. I don’t want to post anything not SFW on tumblr, in case it gets deleted.
I don’t post a lot on pillowfort, but it’s for anytime I have a not SFW story idea I want to share. And if tumblr ever gets deleted off the internet for some reason (like getting sued into the ground), then you’ll be able to find me on pillowfort. It’s my backup website.

Solarpunk, a Rocketship Ride Through Science Fiction’s Evolution, and Things to Come.
Ended up writing a crap-ton more than expected in response to the question:
Tumblr media
So this post happened. First I’ll define the new subgenre and then look at it and the rest of science fiction’s evolution as a literary genre, play around with how each of those might address one SFnal trope (rocketships), and then reflect on how all this parallels cultural change. Whew! So, without further ado, a little essay under the cut:
Tumblr media
(Image from Solarpunk Anarchist)
Solarpunk is usually defined as a movement in speculative fiction, art, fashion, and activism that addresses the question, “What does a sustainable civilization look like, and how can we get there?”
The aesthetics of Solarpunk merge practical with beautiful, well-designed with organic and wild, bright and colorful with earthy and solid. Thematically, Solarpunk can be utopian, optimistic, or concerned with the struggles en route to a better world  -  but not dystopian. As our world trembles at the edge of calamity, Solarpunk says we need solutions, not warnings; it provides visions of how to live comfortably without fossil fuels, to equitably manage scarcity and share abundance, to be kinder to each other and to the planet we share with one another and other beings. It’s a vision of the future, a thought-experiment, a thoughtful provocation, and an achievable lifestyle.
In literature and the arts, I see Solarpunk as the optimistic face of the Cyberpunk coin. Where the “high tech and low life” Cyberpunks fought to exist within dystopian worlds run by non-human entities (corporations, artificial intelligences, and the like), Solarpunks fight to actively make their own place outside of the capitalist-imperialist system by getting off the grid, growing their own food, and otherwise separating themselves from the broader dystopian world by building their own sustainable, pocket utopias.
As opposed to what many see as Post-Cyberpunk’s surrender to the status quo and the power wielded by non-human entities (which is why I dismiss Post-Cyberpunk’s “punk-ness”), Solarpunk says that sometimes we’re forced into fighting the dominant paradigm in order to fix it, or at least we must offer alternatives. Revolution is never gentle, and times of transition are never easy.
Sometimes the Solarpunk world collapses, sometimes its model spreads, but its core, optimistic world-view says that the only long-term human future is sustainable, egalitarian, and non-capitalist.
Solarpunk is especially exciting for me as an SF writer, editor, and educator not only because of these themes and perspectives (which are close to my heart), but also because it’s the first modern science-fiction subgenre to appear this century, and that’s big news! And, in my opinion, it’s movement truest to my core definition of “What is science fiction?” which includes diversity, equality, and hope for humanity.

For an example of what l mean, allow me to take you on a journey, exploring the changing perspective of SF’s development (above is Ward Shelley’s amazing “History of SF” poster; mega-size image here: X) around one SFnal trope:
You want spaceships?
Tumblr media
(Image of the Raygun Rocketship via NASA’s Yuri’s Night)
Proto-SF (from Gilgamesh to Wells and Verne):
One day we shall break our Earthly chains and ascend into the ether, where await realms unimaginable! There we’ll conquer new worlds and lend a firm but guiding hand to the primitive celestial beings in need of human rule.
Pulp Era (SF-as-a-defined-genre’s earliest phase, beginning in the late 19th Century when cheap pulp magazines made literature popular, and really taking off with Amazing Stories’ “Scientifiction” in 1926):
F*YEAH SUPER-SCIENCE WOOOO! TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!
Golden Age / Hard SF (SF’s emergence as a literature exploring [especially] scientific and technological change; greatly matured during John W. Campbell’s Astounding editorship, 1938 - 1950 [or later, depending]):
This powerful new technology enables humankind to explore, colonize, and exploit the galaxy for the good of our species or whatever we later become. Sure, aliens and robots might kick our asses until we learn how to deal with them, but human ingenuity means we’ll succeed in the end - or die trying!
Sociological / Soft SF (found a real home when F&SF and Galaxy magazines gained primacy in 1949 and 1950 and blossomed from there; themes related to “You can’t beat City Hall”):
Spaceships? Bah! Symbol of everything that’s wrong with human culture: imperialism, colonialism, primacy of STEM over humanity. Hell, they’re even shaped like *wink-wink, nudge-nudge*. The only thing they’re good for is using as metaphors. So, yeah, spaceships are real cool, man....
New Wave (a literary reaction against what came before; 1960 - early 1970s):
Spaceships? Ehhh... I think you mean crewed ICBMs. Sure. Send people to space where they’ll die starving on barren Martian plains laid waste a billion years ago when the last intelligent beings thrashed and then faded from existence. Let spacemen choke to death on their own frozen vomit in the vacuum of space, or spiral into the Sun as they lose their minds amid the vast echoing psychic drain of absolute nothingness. Sure, let’s all go! Let Mother Nature to fill our radioactive craters with mutant lushness and reduce human civilization to dust as we descend to barbarism in floating mausoleums. We deserve it. Doesn’t matter, anyhow - here, I’ll demonstrate using an abstract physics haiku that demonstrates how entropy always wins....
Cyberpunk (1970s Punk provided attitude, 1980s capitalism and corporatism provided rage, and the rise of infotech lit the creative fuse):
Yeah, great, spaceships to send corporate slaves to work offworld mines until AI makes us obsolete or wipes us from the surface of all our worlds like anti-static cloth dusting a flatscreen. Better to re-install nukes on those glorified missiles, hack the nav computers, and launch all those f*ckers at Corporate Headquarters before it’s too late. We might survive in the rubble like the rats we are, but at least our former masters won’t.
New Space Opera (an evolution of one of SF’s oldest themes, but using modern literary sensibilities that have lent it growing critical credibility since the 1990s):
Without spaceships, humankind would never have survived the Galactic Wars that vaporized Old Earth, and we certainly would never have been able to be part of Galactic Reconstruction or enjoy the Million-Year Peace.
Slipstream / Interstitial (difficult-to-quantify, non-realistic speculative fiction that mixes aspects of genres; gathered self-identity in the 1990s):
Who needs a spaceship when the squirrel who’s been watching you make eggs and grits for breakfast already knows the path through the portal to other worlds?
Posthuman / Transhuman (been around since Frankenstein, but emerges as a mature subgenre in the late 1990s as Vinge’s concept of the Technological Singularity gains traction):
Spaceships? Oh, you mean the relativistic missiles we use to seed nanofactories on distant worlds where they grow the receivers and other gear for us to transmit our consciousness into newly printed bodies. Didn’t people used to risk their one-and-only lives riding on top of slow-bombs into space? Once, as a subroutine self-instance, I socketed into a meat-body and rode a chariot into the atmosphere of Betelgeuse just to feel what it was like to die hot and fast. Downloaded that experience and woke up screaming. Once is enough for me. I know a couple septamillennians who live for that kind of shit. But they’re crazy.
New Weird (rejects the notion of codified genres per the original Weird Tales perspective most famously popularized by Poe and Lovecraft, thoroughly modern in technological understanding and literary style; revitalized via China Miéville in 2000):
Only after the Event Transition did we come to comprehend the true nature of the... things we once called “spaceships.” The Chronolaks tried to tell us in dreams that any object containing that much concentrated energy - which leaps and roars and carries us within its hard vibrating belly far beyond the safe nursery of Planet Earth - would reveal its true nature once it reached its starry home. But so few of us dreamed the right words, and fewer still recognized the writhing scream-symbols as not nightmares but a warning that could only creep into this universe through the sentient, once-impenetrable null-timespace that chasms between our two bubbles of multiverse gel. Is it better to go mad, consumed by knowledge, or to ride glorious machines to the edge of sanity - but only the edge - and remain ignorant? We’ll never know, now that the froth between realities has blended. What an age that must have been, to have believed that human hands could create such things, these universe-destroyers that draped their identity in spaceships.
...and now...
Solarpunk (grew out of 1970s ecological awareness, Cyberpunk reactionism, and contemporary scientific understanding to offer alternative, sustainable visions of the future) - two branches:
A) Spaceships naw, Earthships yeah.
B) Space elevators replaced disposable rockets for moving material and people up and down planetary gravity-wells, solar-sail transports and ion-rockets enabled Earth to grow lush again as we conduct what little mining and other resource-gathering on asteroids and other lifeless worlds, and the limitless power of the Sun powers all our tech. Public-utility cornucopia machines produce all the food our bodies need and the stuff our imaginations create. Oh, and because the vast richness of space belongs to no one, we abolished private ownership long ago, and nations exist only to simplify the democratic process (except for those weirdo hobbyist-dictators, but as long as they don’t bother anyone but each other, we tolerate them).
Tumblr media

Now, if we’re talking cultural evolution of ideas, I think we can kind of look at these movements as paralleling generational and political change:
Early genre SF emerged during the decline of the European age of empires. It took its attitudes from those who had grown up ruling the rest of the world by using superior military and other technology that provided primacy of power, so it’s chock-full of imperialist, colonialist, racist Othering of the rest of... well, of everyone and everything that isn’t (especially) British / French / American. Ecological concerns are largely nonexistent, partly because no one thought about the concept of limited resources, species extinction, or social justice.
SF’s Golden Age paralleled the rise of US power. Technological might combined with an (ostensibly) free and democratic attitude toward individual citizens and other nations (at least this was the national story...) meant papering-over the problematic aspects of the SF that came before. Greater wealth and leisure for the Middle Class also meant more time to study literature and the arts, so the genre matured a great deal. But the internalized problematic attitudes from days gone by remained, glossed over by Technicolor notions of fairness and equality. The Baby Boomers came of age during this time.
The New Wave and Sociological SF appeared during the Civil Rights movements of the 1960s. Just like the Boomers who grew up alongside it, most of these practitioners soon learned that you can’t make a living fighting The Man, and either remained niche (think J.G. Ballard in SF, and hippie communes in culture) perished, or added their influence to the mainstream of SF or general culture. I see most of these subgenres’ lingering influence in the New Weird, Slipstream, and Interstitial lit, largely authored by Gen X, which sees through and rejects the lies their parents believed and tried to perpetuate.
Cyberpunk paints the world dirty, polluted, ruled by selfish, profit-driven masters or soul-less machines. It rejects the exploitation-based culture that arose with the Industrial Revolution and reached peak problematic-ness with Late Capitalism. It says, “F*ck the system, I’m opting out except for when the system threatens me and mine. Then watch out you bastards, we’re coming after you.” Cyberpunk first appeared as Generation X reached maturity (largely written by their older siblings and parents who were disillusioned Civil Rights activists). Gen X took this and evolved it into today’s Trans- and Posthuman SF and other modern forms that look and act a lot like the originals, only with less anarchy and more modern sensibility.
Modern SF came of age with the Millennials, and reflects their diverse and often less-than-optimistic perspective. The children and younger siblings of Gen X, the Millennials watched the futility of aimless rebellion, absorbed some of their elders’ hopelessness, and face a world that appears headed toward dystopia. Cyberpunk taught them (and the genre) that the best you can hope for under the rule of prior generations is survival among the crumbs of the rich and powerful, though the New Space Opera and other far-future stories provide post-postmodern dreamspace.
But now we’re getting Solarpunk as a new generation comes of age. Like the literature, they’ve grown up in an information-rich environment with a fully developed set of tools and tropes to use to build their unique visions. The internet provides perspectives from every culture around the world, and it’s just as simple to find fodder for new ideas as arguments against obsolete ideas. They learned that putting up with crap only leads to a worsening of the situation. They also learned that grassroots rebellion is powerful. You don’t need to overthrow the rulers, or beat the corporations at their own game. You don’t need to ascribe to the bigotry that pollutes older generations. You don’t need to opt out to create a new space. All you need is good communication, fresh ideas, and a willingness to cooperate to create bubbles of sanity. Soon enough, all that came before will fade, old ideas will die with the old, and if you have built the framework for a better future, you can make it happen. Be patient but get to work. Ignore toxic culture but speak out when you can. Invest in a sustainable future; if the rest of the world chooses to consume itself, you’ll emerge from the green spaces and reclaim what remains in the rubble.
So, yeah, Solarpunk is just as political as Cyberpunk, only optimistic.
You don’t have to be bleak and hopeless to hate the current capitalist-imperialist system and want to create a separate space to exist outside of it - or to create a revolution to change it.
Solarpunk lights the way forward. This is why I’m so excited to see it emerging! It’s not only the newest stage of SF’s evolution, it points the way toward a better future.

Matsuoka, Akari. Her father, Taebin Matsuoka, plays a big role in the pharmaceutics of Japan running the very large corporation; PharMatsu. Her mother, Yuri Shinozaki, started off as a really small tech business owner that became much larger ShinoTech.
Akari’s grandparents arranged a marriage for her parents in order to merge the large companies and profit off the advancements in medicine they could create. They fell in love later on in their marriage and had Akari.
Akari is the only heir to the now merged company Matsuoka Pharmaceutical Engineering & Technology; MPET.
“We are having dinner with one of your dad’s business partners tomorrow evening, they’ve become great friends and they are planning on discussing a really important business venture.” Yuri said to her daughter as they both sat on a large ivory coloured couch. They were both on the opposite ends of a large crocheted blanket with rows and patches or multiple different colours mixed along the length of it. They were both working on their respective ends, Akari working calmly with a dark blue and Yuri working fast with a bright yellow.
“Is this the same business partner that dad went on a trip with for two weeks and came back ‘rejuvenated’?” Akari asked, recalling the happier demeanor of her father she had never seen before after he came back from a business trip.
“Yes, Yoshio Ootori, we’re meeting his family this time, not just hearing of them through your father.” Yuri said with annoyance of her husband's actions.
“We?” Akari asked, glancing at her mother briefly pausing her hand movements. “I have to go too?”
“He says he wants you to be there to know how business should be conducted as the heir of the company. Apparently there is also a decision he wants you to make alongside him.” Yuri said, continuing to look down at the yarn in her hands.
“I just got into highschool. I thought he was waiting until I was older and ‘more mature’ or whatever.” Akari said, mimicking her fathers deep voice. Yuri laughed at her daughter’s impression and waited to speak again.
“Akari, do me this one favour tomorrow.” Yuri said, finally looking at her daughter. Akari stopped as well, worried about her mothers sudden seriousness. “If something you don’t like comes out of this, don’t react...irrationally.”
“You mean don’t throw a tantrum?” Akari said, her mood turning sour and going back to the blanket. “Are those dad’s words and you toning it down?”
“No, it’s me. Your dad doesn’t really realize how big of a deal this is for you.” Akari looked at her mom in concern. She realized it was more than just a business deal if her mother was asking this much of her.
Tumblr media
Akari was sitting in the back of the Ootori family's limousine messing with the lace on her dress as she worried about the dinner she was about to attend. The conversation with her mother had her more concerned than she could have been without it. She was assuming the worst situations and one of them stuck with her. She was getting married off.
Although she was sure that wasn’t the situation, she couldn’t wipe that idea from her mind. She was sitting in a pool of her own worry and dread. She was even starting to damn whatever higher power there was for placing her in a family of this class.
Akari was sitting on her own along the lengthed seat of the car while her parents sat in the back next to each other. She would look over at them and see the way they managed to coordinate their outfits in a way that was cheesy to her, but fascinating to the rest of the world. It made her think of her future, if this was a dinner that would lead to a marriage, would she turn out like her parents.
Akari sat and glanced at her own dress then her parents multiple times realizing how different she looked. She was sitting in a lavender blue, knee length dress. Her father wore a cream coloured suit with red accents. Her mother wore a dress with the same colours. And the more she thought about it, she realized she was never dressed similarly. Whether she chose the clothing or it was a maid or her mother, she looked differently.
“Hey sweetheart, are you okay?” Akari looked over at her father and gave him a blatantly fake smile.
“Of course, it’s not like I have any idea of why I'm here.” Akari said, moving her hair out of her face. Taebin sighed at his daughter's distaste and began to speak, but Akari beat him to it. “Or any idea of what we’re talking about tonight. So, of course I'm okay, dad.”
“Akari, there is no reason to get snippy with me.” Taebin said with a stern voice. A quiet sigh could be heard from Yuri. “You’ll find out when we get there, but until then I need you to wipe that look off your face.”
“Can you two please refrain from having an argument at least for today.” Yuri asked, exasperated. “We’re going to enjoy dinner and discuss what you need too. The only thing you should be arguing over is the deals you are going to make.” She finished, looking over at Akari to remind her what she asked her.
Akari and Taebin both sat back in their seats like scolded children. Both of them glared at eachother one last time before Yuri slapped the back of her husband's head and turned to Akari as if threatening to do the same.
Tumblr media
“Taebin! It’s so nice to see you again!” Yoshio Ootori said happily as the Mitsuokas stepped out of the sleek black vehicle. “I am so glad you agreed to bring your beautiful wife and daughter.”
“It’s great to see you again. I'm glad I was even able to get this one out of her room.” Taebin said with a chuckle as he wrapped an arm around his daughter's shoulders. Akari gave him her least uncomfortable smile.
“It is very nice to meet you Yuri, I’ve heard such great things about you. Your husband speaks very fondly of you.” Yoshio said to Yuri, making her smile warmly at his words. “Welcome inside, my family is happy to see you again.”
Akari looked at her mother in confusion at the way Yoshio ignored her almost entirely. Yuri wrapped her arm around Akari when her father walked ahead, following right behind his business partner.
“You’ll be fine, I just assumed they have a crush on eachother.” Yuri said, making Akari snort at the idea. Yuri smiled at her daughter as they walked behind the two men that were very happily catching up with each other.
As Yoshio showed off the grand entrance of his home, his wife, Tamiko, appeared from a hallway with a smile on her face. She greeted Taebin with a smile and hurried them along into their entertainment room.
“Taebin, you never got to meet the entire family in one place. We managed to wrangle all of our children for one evening.” Tamiko said with a large smile at her children that stood up at the sight of the new guests.
Akari looked around at the Ootori’s watching as they greeted her father and mother. She smiled at the two oldest sons when they came over to shake her hand and proceeded to talk to her dad.
She noticed the way they were all dressed. Yoshio and Tamiko had found a way to wear the same colours, reminding Akari of her own parents. Tamiko had a very deep green dress and Yoshio had on the same coloured green. The oldest brother she had been introduced to, Yuuichi, has matched with his wife with a navy blue tie while she wore a similar coloured jumpsuit with a jacket. Fuyumi, their oldest and only daughter, wore a nude coloured dress and her husband wore a same coloured suit. Akito, their second oldest son, wore a tie and pocket square with the same green as his parents.
Then there was Kyoya, their youngest son. Akari had seen him around school before and heard of him through the girls that religiously went to his club to fawn over him. Once Akari had seen the colour of his suit, she did a double take. It was the exact same as her own. She felt a sinking feeling in her stomach for a moment until Fuyumi approached her with a large smile on her face.
“It’s so nice to meet you! That’s a beautiful dress. I’ve heard a lot about you from your father.” Fuyumi said, pulling Akari into a hug. Akari chuckled awkwardly and thanked her. They pulled away from the hug and her father carried her over to meet Kyoya.
“Akari, this is Kyoya. He goes to Ouran, just as you do, you’re in the same year.” Taebin said, introducing the two.
“It’s nice to meet you.” Akari said as she bowed to Kyoya. He gave her a smile and bowed to her as well. He stared at her dress and then his suit, looking just as confused as Akari felt.
Taebin chuckled at their awkwardness and walked away. Soon after, a maid walked in announcing that the table had been set and the food was ready to be served.
Tumblr media
Everyone was sat at the large dining table eating their food with a conversation flowing evenly throughout the room. Akari was sitting next to her mother and Fuyumi, across from Kyoya.
Akari felt as if everyone was staring at her whenever there would be a pause in the conversation. Then every once in a while she would see Fuyumi look over at her and then Kyoya, who was also looking at her every couple minutes.
The conversation then shifted to the companies and the air got noticeably thicker to Akari. She felt dread as her mind started racing. Her mother reached over to hold Akari’s hand when the desert was brought out, causing Akari to worry even more.
“It’s risky to merge the companies. The board needs solid reasoning besides money and income.” Akito said once the idea and details of merging came up. He said it in a ‘matter of fact’ tone but confusion displayed on his face.
“And we’ve already made a decision for that to be possible without the board.” Yoshio said, bringing his cup of tea up to his lips. Akari set down the fork she had been using to eat the small piece of cake placed in front of her. Her stomach was churning and the pure smell of sweets made her want to be sick. She placed both of her hands in her lap and gripped onto her mothers. Yuri gave her daughter's hand a squeeze of reassurance.
Akari looked up at Kyoya, who was watching her with a blank look. But she could tell he was confused. Or suspicious. She looked at the tea in her cup and reached to drink from it. The tea seemed to taste far more bitter to Akari than the first few sips she took of it.
Taebin cleared his throat, “Akari, Kyoya,” Akari felt her heart race. “We have planned for you two to get married once you graduate highschool.”
Akari felt like her heart dropped into hell as she looked over to her father who was already staring at her with a stern look. She looked over at her mother with wide eyes, who only gave her a sympathetic look.
“Excuse me?” Kyoya said, sounding almost offended. Akari looked over at Kyoya who’s eyebrows were furrowed in anger as he looked at her exclusively. Akari shrunk under his judgemental gaze, even if it was lessened by the glare on his glasses.
“When did you decide this?” Akari said, looking Yuri in the eyes as she pulled her hand out of her mothers.
“Three weeks ago.” Yoshio said, making everyone look over at him. “It’s decided and already in motion. This will be amazing for both of the companies and there will be no arguing over this.”
“So, you just decided something this big for what? Money?” Taebin looked at his daughter and sighed angrily at her words. Yuri glanced between her daughter and husband, trying to figure out how to defuse an argument that hadn't even started yet.
“Akari, this isn’t up for discussion.” Taebin said, his features hardening, “You'll both get along fine and you’ll see this is better for the businesses.” Akari glared at her father, him returning the look.  They sat there for a moment, staring angrily at each other until Akari realized she wasn't going against her father.
Akari would be fighting her father and Mr. Ootori. It was more than just a small decision. It could change lives, the lives of the people that worked with either companies and the lives of the people looking for medical care. It would change her life too, but it will do more good to others than for her to worry about her own. So she looked away and sunk back down into her chair. She quickly picked up her cup as her face heated up in embarrassment.
Kyoya glared at his father and then Akari. Akari’s mind ran a mile a second and felt like she melted into a puddle of regret because of the way Kyoya looked at her. She was starting to wonder how beneficial of a situation this actually was for her.

Nozomi Entertainment Launches Kickstarter to Dub 1985's Dirty Pair
Tumblr media
The Dirty Pair Lovely Angels live on! Classic anime gunners Kei and Yuri have had all their anime outings dubbed into English, except the very first. But with your help, Nozomi Entertainment is hoping to change that.
The company launched the Let's Dub the Dirty Pair TV Series! crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, aiming to finally produce an English-language version of the 1985 series in HD on Blu-ray. A lack of resources (specifically, the isolated music and effects track) stifled attempts to produce a dub sooner; with those resources in hand, it can finally happen.
youtube
The project will be directed by Joe DiGiorgi at Headline Studios. DiGiorgi has experience directing dubs for classic titles like Record of Lodoss War and Ikki Tousen, and has worked with Nozomi on several dub titles in the past. More staff will be announced later — but so far, we know that the team behind the dub is made up of "seasoned anime pros."
The lineup of goods for backers ranges from standard to one-of-a-kind. You can get art cards, shout-outs, autographs, and other such expected rewards. But at higher tiers you can also get a custom Kei or Yuri costume, a light-up standee, and even a chance to audition to sing in the dub.
Tumblr media
Backers who donate at least $1 during the campaign will be able to purchase select reward items during a "slacker backer" period during production. But if you have your eyes on a certain prize, it's best to go for it now; there's no indication of which items will be available after the campaign closes.
That said, you don't have to back the campaign to get the new Dirty Pair Blu-ray. The newly-dubbed release will go on sale to the general public a few months after backers receive theirs. Plus, new Blu-rays of the rest of the Dirty Pair franchise will be released. Nozomi specifies that these will not be re-dubbed, but will contain earlier English-language tracks — more than one, in some cases.
At the time of publication, the Dirty Pair dub crowdfunding campaign has raised more than $62,000 of its $275,000 goal. The all-or-nothing campaing ends October 31.
About Dirty Pair (from Nozomi Entertainment):
In the 22nd century mankind may be technologically advanced, but there are still some problems that can only be fixed by a couple of women who won't back down from a fight! These are the adventures of Kei and Yuri, two official Trouble Consultants for the World Welfare Works Association (WWWA) who use their brains, brawn, and looks to solve any problem. They call themselves the "Lovely Angels," but because their solutions often result in chaos and mass destruction, the rest of the universe has dubbed them the "Dirty Pair"!
For Kei and Yuri, no two missions are ever the same. As the WWWA's top Trouble Consultants, they take on all sorts of odd jobs, like chasing down treasure in high-tech ruins, fighting off political assassins, and even avenging the death of... a plaster statue? In the end, only one thing's for sure: anything that stands between these two and victory is sure to be destroyed!

I Found This Interesting. Joshua Damien Cordle.
Mxene-Coated Fabric Could Block Harmful Radiiation, Electromagnetic Waves
Researchers at Drexel University's College of Engineering have reported that fabric coated with a conductive, two-dimensional material called MXene, is highly effective at blocking electromagnetic waves and potentially harmful radiation. The discovery is a key development for efforts to weave technological capabilities into clothing and accessories.
Materials that block electromagnetic waves had a commercial moment a handful of years ago when fears that high-tech thieves could scan or copy credit cards, passports or hack into laptops and contactless car keys had people putting them in special wallets, bags and protected pockets. While reporting suggests these fears were overblown, the demand for this sort of textile is likely to grow as more manufacturers incorporate sensing and communication technologies into fabrics.
They could also be deployed in national defense organizations to shield devices from tracing and hacking and to protect people from strong microwave radiation -- the kind that might have been used against American and Canadian diplomats according to recent reports.
"Wearable devices will need shielding from the electromagnetic interference (EMI) regularly produced by mobile devices, and that shielding should be integrated as part of the garment," said Yury Gogotsi, PhD, Distinguished University and Bach professor at Drexel, who led research recently published in the materials science journal CARBON. "We have known for some time that MXene has the ability to block electromagnetic interference better than other materials, but this discovery shows that it can effectively adhere to fabrics and maintain its unique shielding capabilities."
The interference comes from residual electromagnetic fields produced by electronics devices. Users notice it as a buzz, a slowing or temporary stall in a device's function. It's a momentary inconvenience, but these moments are becoming more frequent with expanded use of mobile devices and connected technology -- including wearables.
Improving the design of these devices, according to Gogotsi, entails using a shielding material to contain electromagnetic field generated by the device, as well as protecting it from interference produced by other devices. Gogotsi's team, which first produced and studied the conductive two-dimensional MXene materials nearly a decade ago, has been testing MXene coatings for this role, with promising results.
"MXenes are well-suited for use as shielding because they can be stably produced as a spray coating, an ink or a paint, so they can be applied to textiles without adding much weight or taking up more room," Gogotsi said. "We have also discovered that MXene shielding can absorb and reflect electromagnetic waves, so it not protects the wearable devices and electronic gadgets, but also protect people from strong electromagnetic field."
The researchers' most recent finding shows that dip-coating regular cotton or linen fabric in a MXene solution will turn it into an equally formidable shielding material -- blocking EMI at greater than 99.9% effectiveness.
MXene flakes suspended in solution naturally adhere to the fibers in conventional cotton and linen fabrics because of their electric charge. This produces a thorough and durable coating, without the need for the pre- or post-treatment processes to produce most commercial conductive yarns and fabrics.
As part of the study, the MXene-coated fabrics were tested after being stored under normal conditions for two years and they showed only a slight drop in shielding efficiency -- roughly 10%.
"This work provides a much-improved alternative to current EMI shielding textiles," said Simge Uzun, a doctoral student in Gogotsi's research group, who conducted this research as a part of her PhD program. "Not only do MXene-coated fabrics exceed the performance of commercial metal-coated fabrics, but they can be sustainably produced by coating form aqueous solution without extra processing or chemical additives."

10 To Watch : Mayors Edition 42919
10 TO WATCH : RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 29 : MAYORS EDITION with Jacob Aere
Nashville hosted a "record-breaking weekend" for the NFL Draft, as attendance figures released Saturday by the league noted the city "welcomed an estimated 600,000 draft-goers across the three day event," according to the Tennessean. For first person evidence of the Draft’s impact well beyond the bottom line, consider what country music artist Dierks Bentley, who closed out the NFL Draft main stage on Saturday with a post-selection concert, said prior to performing, "This must be the greatest day I've ever had here in Nashville." To his point, a "sea of swarming football fans...greeted Bentley with drink-raising elation as he ran on to the towering Lower Broadway draft stage.” The NFL Draft in Dallas last year had a $125 million economic impact, with people spending $74 million. Officials with the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp. believe the city will far surpass the number from last year. And even though Sin City bills itself as the Entertainment Capital of the World, Nashville set the bar pretty high for Las Vegas, next year’s NFL Draft host. Thanks to Nashville, other cities jumping in line to host the Draft must even more sharply evaluate how they can maximize locale, entertainment offerings, and activation to draw top crowds.
The 145th Kentucky Derby will feature lots of hooves
and claws. The annual Running of the Roses is always primetime for rising brands to launch new activations, and this year is no exception. To this point, White Claw Hard Seltzer has signed on as a Kentucky Derby sponsor, marking the event's first sponsorship in the hard seltzer category. The agreement includes custom White Claw-branded scarves and pocket squares, which will be handed out to fans onsite, as well as a custom White Claw Snapchat filter that will debut Friday, May 3 around the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs. In addition, the beverage brand will have an official area in the infield at turn three, with product available for purchase. 2019 may go down as the Year of the Seltzer – from the omnipresent LaCroix sparkling water to its alcoholic brethren. But it’s doubtful it will be another year for a Triple Crown winner, as there’s a lot more parity in the strong Kentucky Derby field this year.
Collective bargaining agreement clause encourages NFL owners to maintain minority ownership in On Location Experiences. According to JohnWallStreet, reports indicate that Endeavor had agreed in principle to acquire the 80% of On Location Experiences owned by Bruin Sports Capital, Carlyle Group, and RedBird Capital for a figure upwards of $700 million, with the NFL retaining their 20% stake. The NFL generates 40% of OLE’s profits, but league was never a threat to re-acquire the majority stake it sold to the private equity firms for $70 million in 2015. That’s because as a minority shareholder, the league collects its cut of the profits “free and clear. There’s no risk involved, they don’t have any expenses.” If the NFL took control of OLE once again, it “assumes 100% of the corporate tax responsibilities, without an allowance for any of the expenses.” Remember, under the league's current CBA, NFL players are entitled to 48.5% of gross (not net) revenues – yet another good reason for the league to keep its minority shareholder stance.
The NHL has confirmed that it will purchase carbon credits to offset the airline emissions produced during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The announcement, which coincided with Earth Day, is part of the NHL’s ongoing efforts to tackle climate change. This effort marks the first time the NHL will offset carbon emissions. The league will purchase credits for all four rounds of the competition which will equate to approximately 2,000 tons of CO2 emissions in total. The NHL will purchase carbon offsets from a non-profit organization based in Oregon that provides environmentally friendly product solutions. For the first playoff round, the NHL offset more than 465 tons of CO2, which is the equivalent of taking 99 cars off the road for one year. NHL Green, which was launched in 2010, is committed to developing green business practices across the league and maintaining efforts to preserve the environment. Last season, the NHL released its second sustainability report which detailed the body’s efforts to manage its environmental impacts on all levels of hockey.
Ahead of National Golf Day, the National Golf Foundation has released its annual Golf Industry Report, a comprehensive state-of-the-industry overview. The Golf Industry Report aims to provide the most holistic view of the business of golf and the health of the game within the U.S. According to the latest numbers, golf’s participation base remains stable, with an estimated 24.2 million people who played golf on a course in 2018 — a slight increase from 23.8 million a year earlier. Almost as many people play off-course forms of the game, with 23 million hitting golf balls with clubs at golf-entertainment facilities like Topgolf and Drive Shack, indoor simulators and driving ranges. With 9.3 million people exclusively playing golf off-course, the game’s overall participant pool has increased 4% to 33.5 million. Despite rainy weather’s impact last year, there are 14.7 million people who didn’t play golf last year but say they are “very interested” in playing golf on a course. Another great stat – the U.S. remains the best-supplied golf market in the world, with 14,613 facilities and 16,693 courses – more than 75% of which are open to all players, the highest public-to-private ratio in history.
Serena Williams has become the latest athlete to announce her own VC firm. In an Instagram post, the 23-time Grand Slam winner revealed that Serena Ventures has quietly been investing in a variety of startups since 2014. The firm’s website counts 30 startups in its portfolio, with an accumulated market capitalization of $12 billion. Among the startups that the investment vehicle has already backed are meal-delivery services Daily Harvest and Gobble, home fitness system Tonal, women’s razor brand Billie, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, female co-working startup the Wing, and Propel, which offers financial software for low-income Americans. Serena Ventures’ website states that the company invests in firms that “embrace diverse leadership, individual empowerment, creativity and opportunity.” According to Forbes, Williams was the highest paid female athlete in 2018, bringing in $18.1 million thanks to an unmatched endorsement portfolio that includes deals with Nike, Intel, Audemars Piguet, JPMorgan Chase, Lincoln, Gatorade, and Beats. This week, Serena is involved in another massive undertaking, as she and sister Venus co-chair the prestigious Met Gala, which benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City.
Sneaker marketplace StockX to cross $1 billion mark with new investor. Online sneaker resale marketplace StockX is in "advanced talks" to be valued at least $1 billion in a new round of financing, according to Recode. Sources said that DST Global, the venture firm run by Russian-American billionaire Yuri Milner, is "expected to lead the deal." The exact size of the financing round "couldn’t be learned." StockX is "planning to make some other major company announcements when it unveils the fundraising round, which is likely to be closed in the next few weeks." StockX launched in 2016 and was founded by Cleveland Cavaliers Owner Dan Gilbert, COO Greg Schwartz, and CEO Josh Luber. StockX plays "matchmaker for sneakerheads looking for rare kicks and resellers looking to flip unworn, in-demand sneakers for a profit." The company has "benefited from the rising popularity of acquiring tough-to-buy sneakers, especially among millennial men and teenage boys.” You only have to look at the success of hard-to-find designer handbag sites Baghunter and Rebag to realize that a dedicated sneaker marketplace foots a lot of potential.
The WNBA slams home a multi-year broadcast deal with CBS. Starting this season, the broadcaster will feature 40 matches per season starting May 25 as the Minnesota Lynx host the Chicago Sky during the opening weekend of the new WNBA campaign. According to SportsPro, 11-time All-Star Sue Bird and the defending WNBA champion Seattle Storm will make six appearances on CBS Sports Network this season, including a WNBA finals rematch against the Washington Mystics on June 14. The 12-team WNBA has been consistently overshadowed by their male counterpart NBA league, however the new CBS broadcasts may pave ways for the women’s league to find new economic avenues and exposure to different fans. If the WNBA wants to take their push one step further, the next investment would be further exposure on OTT platforms since the sports market is trending toward more a-la-carte basketball media interactivity.
The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Challenge is bringing together a 12-team field of NCAA coaches and celebrities for a charity golf tournament. According to tigernet.com, the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Challenge has provided a total of $7.6 million in charity over the past 12 years. Proceeds from the event benefit scholarships at the participating universities and charitable foundations selected by the coaches. Some of the names competing in the tournament include: Urban Meyer, Dabo Swinney, Brian Kelly, and Kirby Smart. The nation’s premier head coach and celebrity golf event will be held April 28-30 outside Atlanta and will be broadcast on ESPN in August and December. This tournament allows college rivalries to exist off the gridiron while the total prize purse of $650,000 incentivizes the coaches to deliver their best game on the green for the benefit of students and other charities.
NBA Cares Community Assist Award nominees highlight the best of charity work in basketball. According to CBS 3 Philly, the season-long NBA Cares Community Assist Award recognizes an NBA player who reflects the passion of giving back to a community. The ten 2019 finalists include the Philadelphia 76ers’ Tobias Harris, Brooklyn Nets’ Jarrett Allen, Washington Wizards’ Bradley Beal, Memphis Grizzlies’ Mike Conley, Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James, Portland Trailblazers’ Damian Lillard, Milwaukee Bucks’ Khris Middleton, Utah Jazz’s Donovan Mitchell, Dallas Mavericks’ Dwight Powell, and Toronto Raptors’ Pascal Siakam. Each player has gone above and beyond off the court this season. Harris, for example, has pushed for the construction of a school in Haiti and for further representation and fair treatment of women in sports and technology. The awards will be announced at the 2019 NBA Awards on June 24 with some of the game’s most recognizable names up for the award.
