The swirling sensation in her stomach never stopped even after she had sent everyone on their way. In fact, it got worse as her eyes tracked over the calendar she had on her desk. Little boxes filled to the brim with colorful ink, each color holding a significance that was important to only her.
Red was urgent, meetings she couldn't miss, or she would never hear the end of it. Blue was content, what subject matter she should be on week by week - which she was behind on. Green was tasks listed out in bullet points for science and math - to make a study guide, to redo a failed worksheet, to get supplies together for an upcoming lab, to make calls regarding a field trip in the near future.
Orange was personal.
Orange ink littered every Friday - ‘after school w/ K.S.’ (Abbreviated in case anyone came up to her desk with prying eyes. Already learning the hard way - last month - when question upon question was asked of “oh my god what do you and Mr. Sugawara do after school?!?” And “is Mr. Suga your boyfriend?! Is that why you have that on your calendar?!”)
Orange ink that scrawled underneath every box labeled Friday made her heart squeeze but wrench all in the same breath. Holding onto the feeling so hard she felt it crush and shatter in between her fingers. She had the tendency to hold onto things too hard, and never did find it within herself to let go - fractured or not. Always finding herself picking up stray pieces that fell here and there, leaving a trail behind her wherever she went.
The amount of colorful ink, some smeared and some barely legible, threw her into a spiral if she looked at it too long. Too many things to do, too many calls to make and meetings to attend, and simply not enough time in one school day to complete everything. The swirling feeling that started in her stomach began to move, forcing its way to her throat and she took a deep breath. She swallowed hard and closed her eyes, fighting the nausea and overwhelming need to spill her guts right then and there.
In through the nose, out through the mouth.
She remained like that a moment, focusing on her breathing and taking deep inhales of air only to let it back out again. But she gripped the orange pen she had in her hand tightly when she heard someone step through the threshold of her door; the sickly feeling returned to her throat immediately. She kept her eyes closed and took a shaky breath, determined to focus herself onto one thing rather than the person who came in.
She knew it was Sugawara.
Knew the moment she heard long, relaxed strides and the soft squeak of chucks onto the horribly waxed floor. Knew as soon as she heard him walk through the door without a word - silent and all too ready to listen, to help. She knew he looked at her in worry, brown eyes swimming with an emotion she had yet to pinpoint. She knew he wouldn't dare leave until he knew she was alright.
Sugawara knew that she was losing her grip on remaining calm.
“Do you need the trash can?”
A simple question, asked in a soft voice near her. She only screwed her eyes shut tighter and shook her head. “I'm ok.” Lying through gritted teeth, hoping he would turn to leave, but to no avail.
“No you're not.” Another whisper of a reply.
“I'm fine.”
She heard him hum before the screech of a chair hit her ears, making her flinch and a ‘sorry’ followed quickly after.
And that's when she felt him.
His presence radiated next to her that she couldn't ignore - warm, caring, and selfless. Not a single off hand comment to say as he pulled a chair next to her and sat down without a word. She could feel his arm brush against her own, a simple accident as he got comfortable in the plastic chair. But a tingling feeling that made her heart stop; a proximity she couldn't tell was intentional or not.
“Then I'll be here to make sure you stay fine.”
She hated that answer.
Loathed it even, for the sole fact it caused the sickly feeling to arrange itself into a lump in her throat. A lump that made her swallow hard, as to try and fight it, but only made it worsen as it became bigger. Growing until the feeling hit her chest painfully, overwhelming her with a sense of panic. One hand still held onto the orange pen for dear life, and the other death gripped her pants leg.
“Suga,” the name spoken in a whisper, but voice cracking all the same. It dawned on her she had no control over how the situation went anymore, realizing she would ultimately drop her façade in front of the man only made the burning pain in her chest worse. The mask would reluctantly be long gone if she started to cry; and it hit her hard as she became acutely aware of the fact she couldn't stop herself if she did.
Her face felt hot and her heart pumped violently in her chest, hearing every thump within her ear drums so loudly it drowned out the rest of the world. She took one last deep breath - but that was the start of the complete collapse of her mind.
The inhale was labored, fighting back every instinct to let tears flow freely - she couldn't, she wouldn't, not in front of him, anyone but the man beside her.
But she did.
The exhale was a choked back sob, one of which made her drop the orange pen completely and cover her mouth to muffle the sound. A cry for help that sounded too desperate to let anyone else hear, too pained to allow the man next to her bear witness too, too raw for even herself. Even with her eyes screwed shut, squeezing them so tight the corners of her eyes began to hurt, the tears fell anyway. It wasn't gradual, it wasn't a wave that pulled her down slowly but surely - it was the sudden, violent collapse of an, otherwise fine, structure. The chaos of watching a building fall, watching as brick by brick it all came tumbling down on itself.
She couldn't register what happened, as the time from his statement and her crying was nothing but a brief pause. She only knew she was crying, her fingers sore from grabbing at the fabric of her pants, that her throat felt hoarse, and the hand that covered her mouth was now wet with tears. But a new sensation was thrown into the mix that made her jump in her skin and hold tight to the last thread of sanity she still had. A warmth on the back of her hand completely sent her to the deep end and lurched her off.
His hand atop her own.
She couldn't explain why she flipped her palm over in that moment, couldn't place why exactly she interlocked her fingers with his without a second thought, and she surely didn't know why she removed her hand from her mouth only to open it. “What the fuck is wrong with me, Suga?” A wrenching question asked through broken cries and hot tears, “why can't I think, for just one goddamn second, that I'm not drowning? Why can't I think I'm good enough? Why can't I think I'm not a complete failure with everything I do?”
There was a long pause, one that only made her tears flow a bit harder. Because his silence felt cold to her, his silence felt like an answer all in itself. But he squeezed her hand in his own and looked over to her; if she had glanced, even briefly, to him she would've realized she took his heart right out of his chest. Held it in her hands unknowingly and dug her fingers into it, leaving marks that would linger for the rest of his days.
“You’re the farthest thing from a failure,” he whispered. "And I’ll tell you every day that you’re good enough, because you are. You’re more than enough - you’re perfect.”
She wished she had said yes to the trash can.
“I am failing miserably,” she choked. “They won’t fucking listen, they won’t stop talking, they keep asking me the dumbest things imaginable after I tell them what they’re doing, and they look at me like I’m stupid constantly. And I have to pretend that everything is okay, and smile and laugh. Even when I just want to slam my fucking head into the wall and cry. I-”
“Hey.” She felt him squeeze her hand once more as he cut her words short. “Breathe.” Another squeeze, this one tighter than that last, and he kept the tension. He held her hand like her life depended on it, interlocking fingers between his own and remained firm. He refused to watch her drown - or at least, they'd drown together.
She took an uneasy breath in, and hopelessly failed at holding it as another sob wracked her chest again. To this, he didn't say a word; only watched as she tried to inhale and hold it. Brown eyes swirled with a concern she wouldn't even bear witness to, holding her hand as it was the only thing he could do. Failed attempt after failed attempt until she was finally able to the fifth time around - holding it and releasing a shaky exhale.
“It's ok to not be ok,” he assured, to which he squeezed her hand once again.
She finally found it in herself to open her eyes, and she looked over to him in sorrow. Blurry, tear stained eyes locked with his own and he felt his heart sink even farther in his stomach. How long has she felt like this? Thinking himself an idiot for letting it get to a peak such as this one; ridiculing himself within the chasms of his mind for not noticing sooner. On the contrary, she felt her stomach surge upward. A squeamish feeling that made her swallow harshly, and a bitter taste at the back of her throat that made her look away from him completely.
She most definitely should have said yes to the trash can.
Her eyes had only met his own for a fraction of a second, but that was enough for her to feel embarrassment wash over her. So she kept her eyes glued to the orange ink that littered the calendar on her desk. Orange was consistent, never changing, caring - adoring. And she watched as, now slowed, tears dripped onto the paper. Drops created small, circular splotches that bled through to the pages underneath. Watched as the ink started to scatter and feather out from hot, salty tears; and for once, she didn’t care. Didn’t care that her handwriting began to be illegible, didn’t care that red ink started to blend with green. As long as the orange ink was still there, if it still remained intact - it was fine. As long as the orange ink would always remain there, it was ok.
“But I have to be ok,” she whispered, negating his statement as she closed her eyes again. “If I’m not ok then everything will go to shit.”
“Says who?”
“Says my brain.”
“Well,” he began, and she heard the faintest of a chuckle sound from beside her. “Don’t listen to your brain. You don’t have to be ok at all.” And in that moment, she became overly aware of the fact he was holding her hand, because he squeezed it again. Pale fingers locked with her own, holding tightly, and she felt a heat rise to her cheeks. Muddled with the already warm feeling of being overwhelmed, she felt herself thrown to the deep end all over again. “Honestly, we can not be ok together.”
Together.
One singular word felt crushing, but relieving all in the same breath. While it took her by the ankles and yanked her downward, it also grabbed her by the wrists and surged her up. A head spinning feeling that didn’t help her nausea; it only made it worse as now she felt torn asunder. Friday after Friday of being together but so, god damn, far apart. Together felt like a curse. A god awful, caring, loveable curse she couldn't get enough of.
She kept her eyes closed and lips sealed shut at his words, humming them over in her mind as seconds passed. Burnt out, foolish, embarrassed, and hot, she still noticed the yearning feeling that pulled at the back of her mind. An ache that never went away, only nagged and pined as it only continued to grow as moments became minutes. And minutes became a crushing weight to finally say something - anything.
Together.
“Do you want to get hammered tonight?” An off kilter, frankly off color, question she blurted out to him as she reopened her eyes. Looking over to him in anticipation, but a deep rooted fear swimming in her eyes, and she finally squeezed his hand back in response.
She saw the smile form on his lips the second the question was asked, watched as the smile turned to a chuckle, and the chuckle became a silly, joy bringing laugh. “What kind of question is that?” A rhetorical question asked between chuckles, “obviously I want to get hammered.”
“I still don't want to go to the bar though,” tagging on the statement quieter than the last and she saw him shrug in response.
“My offer still stands. Do you like shitty, cranberry vodka?”
“Yes?”
“My place it is then.”

Luffy sat next to Zoro as they rolled little colorful balls of dough. He had arlired tired one and got whacked upside the head with a wooden spoon. He had to wait until they were cooked. The kitchen was warm and filled with yummy smells, Sanji had made mini pie things, and Luffy couldn't remember what they were called as a pre-dinner snack. They had eggs and meat!
“Sanji watcha maken?” Luffy asked, sniffing the air as he rolled another tiny dough ball.
“Moqueca its a seafood stew, with rice, tsukemono, danmuji, and sunomono, which are pickled vegetables for side dishes. Then what you're working on is the dessert bua loy.”
“Yum!”
“Curlys is the best fucking cook in the world, but if you're not careful, he will put you to work,” Zoro grinned as he rolled another tiny ball.
“Shut it, Mossy, you like it when I put you to work. Don't think I haven't forgotten the pout you had on your face when I made bread without you,”
“That's just cause kneading is a great workout!” Zoro protested.
“Sure it is Mossy,” Sanji laughed, places a large bowl of stew, with a large mountain of rice in front of him, taking the bowl of balls. “Dig in Luffy,” Luffy didn't need to be told twice, Sanji placed down a smaller bowl filled with veggies. They weren't as good as meat but still tasty.
“Where we headed curls?” Zoro asked while Luffy dug in.
“Orange town, it was where Buggy was roumered to be last,”
“Ugg, fucking hate that clown,” Zoro grumbled before eatting.
“Why what he do?” Luffy asked before shoving more delicious food in his mouth.
“Zoros just upset he keeps trying to reucte me, his crew is only omegas,”
“I heard every word. It sounded like a great pitch. He wanted to make you some great acrobat and thire chef,” Zoro grumbled a pout on his face.
“How! You weren't even thire!” Sanji cried his face turning red.
“The weird snail, Koushirou, got a call, and it was Buggy propositioning you with snickers in the background,”
“Fuck! Dam it Crane! I wounded why he took the Den den out of Zeffs office! I bet Patty distracted Zeff so Crane could steal it!”
“You didn't have to sound so interested and so sad to turn his offer down ya know,”
Luffy had no idea what was going on but he was enjoying the show none the less.
“Marimo, don't be like that, Buggy was a good tiper…to me. I didn't want to lose out on the money. Besides, it went to good use. I bought some ingredients to work with since the old geezer wouldn't let me get anything new, and he plans the menus,”
“At least now you can plan the menu when ever you want, and you got to do so for our wedding,”
“Sanjiii, more!” Luffy held up his empty bowl.
“Sure,” Sanji took the bowl from his hand and filled it up again. “Here you go,”

KABOCHA MOCHI LOAF!!!!! with sesame coconut topping.
this was originally going to be pumpkin mochi loaf with black sesame swirl which i saw someone on tumblr reblog the recipe for and i was like i need that in my mouth immediately—and because one of my friends is gluten free i’ve been looking for more gf recipes—but plans changed. Namely because in japan they do not really have pumpkin anywhere! definitely not canned pumpkin, but that was OK because i got to roast this kabocha and gut it and toast the seeds (which did not taste very good but maybe that was user error and not gourd variation).
kabocha is kinda like pumpkin in that it’s a gourd and also when i went to the grocery store and saw it with a sign that said happy halloween next to it i assumed it was pumpkin. technically kobocha is any kind of winter squash (so it can be a western pumpkin!) but this was definitely a little different than what i was expecting.
side note: i love the words gourd and squash! like what do you mean gourd and squash? you’re making squash bread? are you gonna squash it? gorge on some gourd, why don’t you?
i didn’t want to acquire black sesame when i had regular sesame at home and they taste the same so i just used what i had! also could not properly grind up the sesame (though i tried in the blender and with a rolling pin (neither worked)) so we improvised and it was yum sooooo
anyways, this was made for tokyo film nightttt! which we left way too early after but was fun. we watched “the thing” which i still need to think about some more. some crazy parts and some insane special effects.
showed up with half of this loaf gone though because i maybe had a piece or two before everyone else… and because i gave a slice to liz who was feeling sick! but worry not because everyone got goodies and treats and there was enough of this warm seasonal gourdy squashed bread to go around.

Okay i made your recipe of eggplant parm and garlic bread yesterday and I tell you it was one of the besttttt thing I have ever tried!! Instead of egg I lightly dipped it in cornstarch+water slurry and it was so yum!! That cheesy,herby taste gosh I'm definitely making it again and with warm garlic bread no words I'm speechless babe!!😩💞
And I made vanilla cupcakes yesterday too and I added some chocolate chips in it and that warm cupcakes with vanilla ice cream soo yum like delicious and I know cupcakes and ice cream combination sounds weird but please try it like warm gooey cupcake with ice cream it is heavennnnnnn!!😋
My weekend was amazing made these things and it was best!! And now I'm going to read your MOST series!! How many parts are gonna be there of it?? Im so excited to read both the parts and will sure tell you about it!!💞

I LOVE ice cream! I actually don't like cake but do really love cupcakes! I think that's a GREAT combo! I love lava cake with ice cream so I don't think it's a weird combo at all!

what i ate in toronto last week
felt like food blogging hehe
Day One
The first thing I got was a tea and donut bites from a new donut stand in the Portland airport. Yum! Then I remembered I had a long day of traveling ahead of me and went back to the Tillamook store for some real sustenance. Honestly I thought a chive biscuit egg sausage cheese sandwich would be a slam dunk but it wasn't that good.
Donuts: 8/10 (had them over the course of 3 days)
Sandwich: 5/10
Even on long flights, Air Canada only offers paid options. I got this BBQ chicken wrap for $11 CAD or something. Tortilla to filling ratio was bad but it did the job. 4.5/10
I got into the hotel late at night and just decided it wasn't worth the effort to get more food, so thats all for day one lol
Day 2
Met with Suyasha and had Cafe Landwer! Was starving and it took forever for the food to come out. This is the Mediterranean shakshuka. Bread was so fluffy. The presentation is gorg but i wasn't obsessed with the tomato-y sauce I guess. 7/10
In the afternoon I got a matcha at the library cafe where we worked (it was average, so I guess 7/10 because me love matcha). Later, I went to Fuwa Fuwa Pancakes for pre-dinner dessert. I'm glad I went when I did, because they cook everything fresh, and the wait was long even when I was the only customer. So fresh, fluffy, and refreshing - not too sweet. Yum! 9/10
After that, some folks told me they were getting dinner, so I said I'd join assuming I'd get an appetizer. Well, they decided on all you can eat hotpot, so that was unfortunate lol. We had a good time, food was good but not really noteworthy. I tried a mussel, gross! Also ate a pepper wrapped in beef that had been soaking in the spicy side for too long. That shit HURTED. 5/10
Day 3
I needed something fast to keep me going before the wedding - sadly the only thing I could walk to in time was McDonalds. The tzatziki seasoning was bad and basically ruined my fries. Chicken wrap was just whatever. 3/10
Unpictured: Shirley's wedding food! I forgot to take a pic sadly. I had chicken, kimchi mac and cheese, and other things I don't exactly remember, but it was all yummy! Plus the signature cocktails were really great. 8/10
Day 4
Niagara falls tour with Alyssa, Hwee, Jen, and Alex(?)! we shared between 4 people. It was steaming hot and yummy. I love cheese curdsss. 7.5/10
While the group went to go on the boat, I got a prosciutto goat cheese salad and a cocktail at the Queen Alexandra. Cocktail was a bit watery and salad was 90% arugula with not enough dressing - but the point was I could see the falls from my seat and they had ceiling fans (IT WAS SO HOT) 6.5/10
When we got back from the tour finally (took 3 hours to get back in traffic), we got Mr. Tonkatsu! The katsu was really flaky and good. 8/10
We also went and got asian shaved ice after this - one with red bean paste and one with almond and soybean. i wasnt really into these so i only had a few bites.. i miss hawaiian shaved ice fr. oh yeah i got some baked walnut balls here too, they were ok, would be better if they were warm. 3.5/10
Day 5
gochujang mushroom tofu banh mi at rustle & still cafe.. OH MY GOD. spicy, creamy, a lil crunch from the pickled carrots and peanuts. i might try to replicate it, it was everything. 10/10
chicken biryani from rikki tikki, with Alyssa, Shendy, and Matt. another HUGE W meal... spicy, scrumptious, perfect. the rice had pomegranate seeds in it which was such a nice little sweet crunch. it came with yogurt sauce which i adored with the spicy meal. im drooling thinking about it. 10/10 my only complaint is that i like more pillow-y naan
Day 6
Lunch was leftover Rikki Tikki!
Forgot to take a pic before it was gone, but I had a chai latte at the cafe we worked at today. It was meh, 4/10. at least the cafe had ok wifi and good a/c lol
After work, I started wandering around and went to a matcha cafe called Tsujiri. All the stuff on the menu looked amazing but I got a peach yogurt matcha frappe. It was so freaking good and those big slices of peach on top were yummy too. 9/10
While walkin' I had to stop at this Vietnamese cafe because the cake looked so yum. And it was! Fresh mango with layers of shortcake, mango pudding, and cream. i just wish it was a little smaller so I hadn't felt so bloated from eating it lol (it had to stay cold and it was a hot day so... I had to just eat it) 8.5/10
For dinner we went to a Jamaican/Chinese fusion place called Patois with Shirley, Jeremiah, Alyssa, guy who I forgot name, and his old WoW guild leader or something haha. We got a "feast for two" to share with the table, plus pork belly yakitori, becuase some of us weren't hungry. I didn't eat much but my fave was the yakitori. The rest was just ok. 5.5/10
Day 7
For my last day Suyasha and I went to Tibetan Cafe and went shopping afterwards. The reviews for this place were so high, but we were both underwhelmed by these "momos" (chicken dumplings). The dipping sauce was tomato-y but overall it was a bit bland. Suyasha is Nepalese and she said this was low-end by her standard lol. I'll try Tibetan food another time. 6/10
This was the first canned diet coke I had all week and man, how sweet it tastes - new jeans
At the airport I shared a snack of poutine and a maple moscow mule with Shirley :3 This poutine wasn't as good as the one I had before. Moscow mule was nice, the maple flavor was mild. 5.5/10
And yes, to give me the energy to travel until 3am EST, I got another BBQ chicken wrap on the plane. So nice I had it twice. Jk, it was not that nice, but actually this time it had a better filling to tortilla ratio lol. 5/10

Pelmeni - my nostalgic comfort food because it's what my parents made for special occasions. Om nom nom.
Thai green curry chicken with rice - place it before me, watch it disappear.
Fresh apricots - was one of the only foods I could eat during my pregnancies, so there's that imprinted taste of survival.
Oven-warm dark bread with butter melting on it, some salt sprinkled on top and chopped chives. Must have crispy crust. Yum.

jam & i have decided that wednesday each week one of us will walk to the bakery in the morning while the other boils eggs and gets things ready for a lovely breakfast before work. and yesterday it was my week to go get the bread and it was still warm from the oven !! and i cradled it to my chest on the walk back like a baby. and it was so yum. i love crusty bread and butter and dippy eggs

truthfully my ideal job is none like i would be happy to stay home all day, bake bread, make jam, and tidy the house lol. but with the way my life is going right now i think i’ll be happy either teaching psychology and/or being a therapist :) maybe working with kids and families

i have been told my style is librarian and grandma. which is fair. i like vintage styles, chunky sweaters, and long skirts. also more muted/neutral tones– vibrant colors don’t really suit me methinks

i’ve been learning spanish for a few years so my goal right now is to get better at that!! i’d love to learn more in the future though especially if i plan on traveling. i was learning french and while i don’t love the language i still might just because, and portuguese would be fairly easy after learning spanish. it would be nice to have a whole arsenal of language knowledge under my belt so we shall see how that pans out lol

I'm an Iowa transplant who's been living here 13 years. I think the point of this post is to shock and gross you out, which is massively disappointing, because none of this food is what you're thinking it is and it SLAPS. Sour Cream and Raisin Pie -some sour cream is added to custard to make it creamier and a little tangy, along with a bit of cinnamon and cloves -the white stuff is meringue. not sour cream. -raisins are polarizing, but i fuck with raisins 7/10, never heard of this pie before, but would like someone's grandma to make me one
Iowa Ham Ball -meatballs made with 1/2 ham and 1/2 beef -sauce made of brown sugar, tomato, white vinegar, and mustard, it's sort of like a sweet, simple BBQ sauce -served in a crockpot at potlucks to keep them warm and eaten with a lil' toothpick
7/10, I always put them on my plate at potlucks
Scotcharoos -if you believe bread, celery, and bananas are just vessels to deliver peanut butter to your mouth, this dessert was made for you -dense and rich peanut butter bars with a lil' chocolate on top -light crunch from the rice krispies = chefs kiss 11/10, will someone's mom make these for me please?
Maid Rite™ -tender and moist seasoned beef, not dry -I honestly just think of these as a type of sloppy joe (don't tell other Iowans I said that) -typically served with onion, mustard, and pickles (yum) 6/10, because my brain thinks "I rather eat a burger", but this is a nostalgic comfort food a for a lot of people. When the school I work at has these for lunch, most of the staff will eat school lunch that day.
Steak de Burgo -idk it's a tenderloin steak with a special herbed butter sauce -essentially a classic dish, but this recipe was apparently invented in Des Moines, IA -did you know David Byrne loves Des Moines? 8/10, medium rare please
Taco Pizza (didn't link a recipe, because it will never taste the same as ordering one from Taco John's, Casey's, or Wig & Pen) -beef cooked on the pizza. Lettuce, tomato, onion, and tortilla or off-brand Dorito chips added on after it comes out of the oven. Sour cream and taco sauce on the side. -some have a bean base, some just do red sauce -anyone who grew up here and moved away would likely pay you a great sum of money if you could teleport them one of these right now 12/10, would eat one right now
Snickers Salad -If you grew up with marshmallow salads-type dishes at potlucks, you either have a love or hate relationship with them -Snickers and green apple = match made in heaven -base is cool whip and pudding mixed together
6/10, definitely putting a lil' scoop on my plate when I see it at a function Corn -Iowa exports more soybeans and pork than corn, but is still known for corn because it is the best corn. -when people in other states say they got "the best sweet corn they've every had" from the grocery store/farmers market, they have no idea what they're talking about -i am here to slander every other state's sweet corn 14/10, cannot wait until sweet corn season

Two days of travel 16-17 Oct
So Wednesday dawned wet - no run and washing had not dried over night but there were more troubles to come. Thankfully fixing the leak under Grandad sink wasn’t an issue, and the rain stopped for us to make a walk down to the ‘hardware’ store - definitely not a Bunnings or Mitre 10 and unfortunately their washer option was smaller in diameter and thinner, so only toothbrush purchased from the supermarket to replace the one Nick planned to use to clean the treads on the suspected leaking connector. So appropriately cleaned and plumbers tape applied, pipes at connectors all reconnected and pleasingly no leaks (fingers crossed more than 24hrs later that is still the case - I guess we might hear about it if Grandads place is now flooded!).
So once the online check in had happened I realised a problem: while I had purchased luggage, I hadn’t purchased checked luggage so we suddenly had to find new bags and repackage our stuff to under 10kgs. The 10kgs not a big problem, the new bags sorted thanks to Grandad, as he and Pam had some great ‘carry on’ sized packs from their NZ trips. Thankfully we will meet up with Jill soon after we get back to the UK to grab the rest of our clothes (fingers crossed for a warm 7days in Portugal and 4 mild days in Germany). Family is awesome.
I cooked lunch, as many of you will be aware this isn’t my favourite pastime (I know I can cook but I don’t enjoy it), between Grandad really wanting to avoid pasta and Nick wanting pastry we ended up with a mince roast lamb pie, mashed potatoes, broad beans and peas with gravy. No I didn’t make pastry, yes I brought it, sorry David and Pam I wasn’t even going to try.
After lunch it was off to the station to catch the train to Woking and change there to get to Surbiton. With the delayed train it was a dash between trains to make the connection. We were off to stay with Fran for the night before she took us to Gatwick - again family is awesome and I only hope that for all of them, Nick and I do get the chance to pay it back when they visit us. Anya and Fran picked us up from the station, we had managed a quick trip to M&S to get wine, elderflower water (yum) and chocolates before they arrived (not that they were late, we were early).
Was a lovely evening with the most amazing garlic bread - Nick is going to make at home (look out Terri and Ewan you will probably be the first recipients). Lots of talking, memories and sorting out plans for when we catch up again in a couple of weeks.
Not an early night but not too late, I managed to get up at 4am for my Te Reo class, but unfortunately I didn’t know where the light switches were so it was hard to write notes in the semi dark (toilet light was on), and I am sure the half lit face on the screen looked quite strange to my classmates, Mika and Shelley awesome to see you both. Now I just need to finish my last two assignments - one is due Sunday night and the other in two weeks. I did crawl back into bed but sadly dreamed about work - I have some very strong advice for updating of data sheets for the vaccine companies and Medsafe who I was dreaming I was meeting with - sad).
Got up at 7:30 and dragged us both out for a run, always helps blow the cobwebs away. Croissant for breakfast helps ensure that I don’t get into calorie deficit- hahaha.
After we were all showered and packed up (3 cups of tea later for me), we headed off to see Uncle Greg at his care home. I don’t feel he has changed much physically but there are a few gaps in his short term memory, but he remembers me - not so sure about Nick but considering I think they have maybe met once, maybe twice, before that’s not a surprise.
Fran dropped us off at Gatwick, thankfully traffic was flowing on the M25 and we made it in good time.
No problems with security and leaving the country was easy, no passport control to go through. Our new bags were the right size and no one questioned their weight. Boarding was were the fun started, with speedy boarding being any but and even through we were early on, there is still a gap between us and my bag due to the overhead bins being full, so will be interesting to get to it in the madness of people getting off. Well my cup of tea has arrived so will take a pause until after we get to Faro and beyond.
So to pick up the story again, we made it to Faro slightly delayed and then the second major catastrophe of the holiday occurred, Nick left his phone (Visa card, wise card & driver’s license) on the plane. So picture this man looks at phone close to landing places phone in chair pocket in front of him, takes wife’s handbag so she can move more easily move against flow of traffic on plane to get her pack, man waits for wife to get off plane and then they fast walk to the loo, just before passport control. Wife washing her suddenly see husband standing in door way of the ladies loo, looking very concerned. “I’ve left my phone on the plane” - fast walk back to gate, a bit of I can’t quite believe you/I have done this. Very nice man tells Nick stop no he can’t go back on plane but the kind man says he will go look, a very long few minutes follows, during which half of Europe lands at Faro and joins the queue to get into the country. The kind man returns phone and cards to man, lots of thank yous follow. Then fast walk to queue before the other half of Europe lands in Faro.
E gates not working so crazy long queue at immigration but we do eventually get through and find Jason, who safely gets us to Hortas do Tabual and there is Tracey, Sasha and Laila. So fabulous to catch up with Jason and Tracey, see their amazing home and to see two of the most travelled cats I know. More on house and cats tomorrow, it is bed time.

LOAF POST LOAF POST
i look so incredibly evil with these loaves but know that i am actually just filled with so much glee and excitement that i cant help but look nefarious!
first is vegan banana bread! this was my first foray into intentional vegan baking! normally i cut out dairy in anything i make, but this was the first time i subbed out eggs. i used applesauce instead. i made this with soo much cinnamon sugar because i didn’t have the effort to make a separate cinnamon swirl layer, but i wish i had! recently i made a chai spiced dark chocolate chunk banana bread that was definitely much better than this one, but i’m glad this is something i can grow from. banana bread is only something i make when people come to me with brown bananas but something i really love and can be so versatile while always being warm :)
pumkin loaf is second! man, i made so much pumkin loaf last semester and photographed none of it. this was my first collaborative baking project with one of my housemates and it was super yum. we didn’t use the whole can of pumkin which definitely threw me off and i was semi critical of this loaf at the time, but now look back on really fondly! i think i was really used to the pumpkin loaf i would make with my roommate, and so tasting this thing we had always made together be different was really weird.
THIS IS THE CRAZIEST AND BEST THING I HAVE EVER BAKED!!! tahini orange coconut cake!!! you heard that right!! oh my god this was crazy and it was delicious and i need to make it again. second collaborative baking project with ava omg this was so crazy. we glazed it with maple butter and sesame seeds and i will never get over this loaf.
mini loaf but mostly lemon poppy seed muffins! counting this in loaf post because it was meant to be a loaf and also there’s a mini loaf! this was a drunk baking project and honestly i think i didn’t count the amount of baking soda correctly so these muffins didn’t get as high as they should have. either way this was crazy yummy. i encouraged the addition of maybe too much lemon juice, but i am citruses number one fan and i believe you can never have too much.

Alfredo sauce is my fav too like with some vegetables so it can be healthy or sometimes no veggies but I love itttt!! And pesto-risotto?? How was it I never tried before??
I'm vegetarian since I was born lol so like it's a practice I think?? And I love fruits some of my favs are Mango, watermelon, blueberries and moreeeee like I could eat in any day!!( I swear i can eat one cube of watermelon and I bloat like a hot air balloon, it's stupid. A single slice of an apple and I want to throw up) after eating bloat like hot air balloon I'm laughing like the word choice is amazing but you can't eat any fruits?? You don't like them or is just you can't stomach them??
Veg Lasagna are so good too and my friends says the meat lasagna are way better than the veg one but I think veg one taste pretty amazing!! Ohh eggplant parm and garlic bread this sounds so good like I have eaten outside but never made it so if you wanna share the recipe of it please do!!

Yes Italian dressing on salads taste so yum I make everytime I crave but I made Caesar dressing few time it doesn't taste that good as compare to restaurants one!!

My bf will make plane alfredo sauce with pasta which is obvs delicious but I LOVE to add broccoli and spinach. Or really any veggies. Alfredo is 😍 The pesto risotto was SO good. There was asparagus in it too and I LOVE asparagus!
Oh no, I CAN eat fruit. It's just annoying because like one grape and I go up three dress sizes lol. I love fruit. Grapes, apples, WATERMELON is my FAVORITE. I also love love love strawberries and blueberries too. Pretty much all berries (raspberries are so underrated to me.) But I'm more of a veggie girl I think!
I love veggie lasagna! Meat lasagna is good too but I love a good veggie lasagna.
Eggplant parm you slice into disks! You can decide the thickness. You dip them in flour, eggs, and breadcrumbs I usually add my favorite seasonings too (garlic powder, onion powder, italian seasoning, etc). Fry them in a pan in your favorite kind of oil (I use canola, olive, or vegetable oil depending on what we bought that week lol) until they're golden brown. Then you start to layer it in a pan eggplant, tomato sauce, mozzarella & parmesan cheese. (I usually do a 8 in x 8 in pan but again your favorite one is fine!) If you make your own sauce then by all means use that but any red sauce you like will suffice! Then you bake it in the oven for a like 30 mins? Mostly so the cheese melts and everything gets gooey, crispy, yummy. I like to have it with pasta as well but it's good on it's own too. ALMOST like a lasagna with eggplant instead of pasta.
Garlic bread is like SUPER easy. I like to use french bread! You cut the bread open and lay it flat on a baking sheet. Oven at 425F. 1/2 cup of butter softened, salt, the recipe I've always used calls for 4 cloves of finely minced garlic but I never measure garlic, I put as much as I feel like. Same thing with salt. It says like 1/4 of a teaspoon but it depends if you use salted butter etc. etc. 1 tablespoon of parsley. You mix the butter, garlic, salt, parsley together and then spread it on the bread and bake in the oven for like 10-15 mins but I just usually watch it until it's ready (golden brown!)
I feel like both of my recipes are like "just throw it together as you see fit" it's very word of mouth recipes in my family and you just watch someone make it a couple times then just do it yourself. But if you try it, I hope you like it! 💕
