Today, 31 May 2018 Xiaomi finally unveiled their next flagship phone - Xiaomi Mi8! Some Chinese sites already have the full reviews up, so here’s everything you need to know about Xiaomi Mi8 including Antutu Score and DXO Mark!

First of all, if most of you are confused why there is no Mi 7, it’s only because numbers 4 and 7 are bad luck ones in China. Xiaomi has skipped past 7 and went straight for 8. 

Regarding design, MI8 now uses a 3D curved glass body instead of the ceramic Mi6. Certainly up there with the most beautiful glass phones on the market.

And the leap is noteworthy when it comes to specs, display and cameras does not disappoint!

Powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and featuring a 6.21-inch Super AMOLED display with 2248x1080 resolution Xiaomi Mi 8 is a modern flagship phone of the highest grade. Not only that, but the Display supports DCPI-P3 wide color gamut and can reach up to 600nits of brightness! No longer does Smasung have the advantage of using Super AMOLED panels. 

Then, there is the matter of the notch. Xiaomi is still Xiaomi, and is still copying iPhone in design. Further specs include 6-8GB RAM, Android 8.1 Oreo on top of the new MIUI 10 and a 3400mAh Battery to power the beast. Noteworthy, Mi8 supports Qualcomm Quick Charge QC 4.0+ for even faster charging! The cameras receive a huge lift, but I’ll talk about that later on. First is the new MIUI 10 which makes a lot of improvements, both visually and in user-friendliness.

I am not a big fan of MUI, there I said it! Over the years I’ve used almost every Xiaomi device, but the interface was just too cartoonish and childish for me. Huawei had the same issue with EMUI before 5.0 and now it’s something else and Xiaomi have done even better. MIUI 10 is finally up to par visually and brings new and original implementations to take it up there with Samsung Exeperience and even iOS. I am not kidding, MIUI 10 looks great. Much more usable notifications, volume sliders and especially my fave - the new Recent Apps list!

I love how the recent apps are displayed as large-size pin-ups on a board. Making you actually see what you were doing instead of Google’s tiles switch or the canvas style in iOS. On the negative side, Xiaomi still insists on using their not so great gesture system, which for me should be screapped and redone.

Now, back to the cameras!

On the back MI8 cameras are now a 12+12MP Sony IMX363 with OIS, just like in Mi MIX 2s which got a 97 Score from DXO Mark. Xiaomi have improved the ISP or chose different lenses and DXO Mark is now 99 for Mi8, bringing it higher than iPhone X and Google Pixel 2! To conclude, Xiaomi MI8 is price at just $599 for the 6/64GB Version making it an absolute steal for Xiaomi fans and anyone looking for a Flagship phone with amazing display, speed and great cameras.  Considering the low price Mi8 totally makes the OnePlus 6 obsolete!

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 MSM8996 is a high-end ARM-based SoC largely found on Android tablets and smartphones. Announced in mid 2016, the S820 is the successor to the Snapdragon 820 and from a technical perspective a higher clocked version of the SoC. In addition to 4 CPU cores (two slower clocked and two faster clocked Kryo cores), the SoC integrates an Adreno 530 GPU with a LPDDR4 memory controller  and supports Wi-Fi (802.11ad + MIMO), Bluetooth 4.1, and LTE.

CPU

The Snapdragon 821 is based on a similar concept as ARM’s big.LITTLE, which combines a low power CPU cluster (2x Kyro clocked at up to 1.6 GHz?) and a performance CPU cluster (2x Kyro clocked at up to 2.4 GHz). The clock speed of each cluster can be individually adjusted (but not per core) and the lowest clock speed is 310 MHz. The performance cluster features 1.5 MB L2 cache and the power saving one 512 KB. Both should be using the same architecture and fully support the ARMv8-ISA instruction set.

Although only four cores are used, the performance of the 821 is located in the high end of mobile CPUs for smartphones and tablets. The performance advantage of the 821 compared to the 820 depends on the used clock speed. E.g. in the Google Pixel, the SoC is only clocked at 2.15 GHz and therefore identical to many 820 SoCs.

GPU

The Adreno 530 outperforms the previous Adreno 430 especially in high demanding benchmarks. Therefore it is well suited of modern 3D games on Android devices and should rank slightly below the Tegra X1 GPU. Compared to the 530 in the 820, the 821 version should be up to 5 % faster, which speaks for a slightly higher clock speed.

The Snapdragon 821 offers numerous wireless technologies such as Bluetooth 4.1, WLAN 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ad (60 GHz) + MIMO as well as a dual-SIM cellular modem supporting LTE cat. 12/13 .

The SoC can encode and decode 4K videos using dedicated hardware (H.264 and H.265).

Power Consumption

Thanks to the new 14 nm process, the energy efficiency has been improved noticeably compared to its 20 nm predecessors.

Mi Smart Band 5 looks pretty much like its predecessor but brings some upgrades on multiple fronts. It now includes a 20% larger display in comparison to its predecessor. Mi Smart Band 5 includes a 1.1-inch color AMOLED touchscreen as compared to a 0.95-inch screen aboard last year’s Mi Smart Band 4. The display boasts a 126 x 294 resolution and up to 450 nits of peak brightness.

Xiaomi has also added a slew of new watch faces (65+) into the mix to give users more options to customize their fitness band. The silicone straps look pretty much the same but now come in attractive three new colors, including orange, yellow, and olive green. The standard black and blue straps remain the same.

One of the biggest upgrades in Mi Smart Band 5 will have to be the addition of 5 new sport modes. Its predecessor only supported 5 sport modes. This means you can now record 11 different types of activities, including outdoor running, swimming, cycling, walking, treadmill, freestyle, indoor cycling, jump rope, yoga, elliptical machine, and rowing machine with Mi Smart Band 5.

Another huge change that users have been requesting for a long time has finally been introduced with Mi Smart Band 5. It’s 24-hour sleep tracking. Yeah, if you own any of the previous-gen Mi Bands, like the Mi Band 4 and Mi Band 3, you would know that it does not track your afternoon naps. The Mi Band 5 will track those, as well as display REM sleep information in the Mi Fit app.

The fitness tracker does not support NFC (like in China) or include a SpO2 sensor (in demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic). It comes equipped with a PPG heart rate sensor for 24/7 continuous tracking. It can now display your PAI (Personal Activity Intelligence), along with stress and sleep monitoring. Mi Smart 5 is also capable of tracking women’s health, i.e menstrual and fertility cycles.

Mi Smart Band 5 is water-resistant up to 50 meters/ 5ATM and now sports a remote camera shutter button, along with music playback controls. All the standard Mi Band features such as notification alerts, caller ID, idle alerts, alarms, and more remain untouched.

The fitness tracker comes equipped with a 125mAh battery that Xiaomi claims will last you around 14 days. My favorite change, however, will have to be the new magnetic charger that simply snaps onto the underside of the pill. You no longer need to take it off the straps to charge the tracker.
