(^ me pretending I title my illustrations) More info below! It's a bit personal and fandom related.

So WKX likes to bite. Let's be honest, from what I know, most priest "gong"'s do, so this is more a priest thing than a WKX thing--but if we look at TYK in a vacuum, we can still just say that it's a WKX thing (and, coincidentally, in Qi Ye, a Wuxi thing 🤭) It's pretty delightful, isn't it, to think that ZZS will permanently bear the scar of WKX's deep bite in his wrist... I'm going to use this piece as an opportunity to talk a bit about the permanent mark that TYK and QY have been carving into me for the past year and a half, then.

Funnily enough, although I started sketching and making a few illustrations here and there before, I consider that the infamous bite is my real "entry" in this fandom, when I made the animatic based on the scene in the audio drama. It's to this day my most viewed piece, and is sort of what made me... "known" as an artist in the fandom, I guess.

Although I've always devoted the most energy to personal projects, I'm no stranger to being a dedicated fan, even though this is my first real, "public" fandom experience. And honestly, personal and fandom projects combined, the animatic is the biggest, most ambitious work I had ever done so far for something not work-related. It was exhausting, and I almost succumbed to burnout after I finished it (just because, combined with work, it got too much). Ironically, it's the state I found myself in afterwards that made me enjoy rereading TYK in a way I never had before.

It's hard to say, whether I let TYK's fangs sink in my throat, or if I was the one to latch on and not let go ever since; but my life has certainly been changed by it.

I often forget about the bite scene; about the bite, in general. It's rarely ever one of the scenes that I think about spontaneously--and I rarely think about drawing the bite scar. Maybe because I've always thought it was a more typical scene? Maybe because on the surface I didn't resonate that much with it? And yet, as I'm going through really rough times right now, this new piece is what I chose to draw yesterday. A bit more than a year ago, when work felt like it was completely consuming me, this is the scene I chose to animate. I'm not sure there is a point in diving too deeply in this. Maybe, more than I would have assumed, I resonate with the desperation and hope that this scene carries. I'm glad I got here, in this fandom. It has had its very difficult moments, in many different ways, and I've discovered new sources of anxiety along the way--but at the same time, I've discovered many joys that I had never known before, and I think it's worth it. I'm grateful for those books to be in my life--grateful for Wen Kexing, for Zhou Zishu, and all the other characters, to be in my life. But of course, more than that, I'm incredibly grateful for the people I met, for the people who spend time with me, who cheer on me and let me cheer on them. Thanks everyone, for being there, and helping me form memories of better days that I can always look forward to.

Shifu's not so complicated relationship with fraud

Why do we as a society not talk about how comfortable Shifu is with committing fraud?

Now, first, let’s talk about fraud itself, this is what it means: wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain. Or a person or thing intended to deceive others, typically by unjustifiably claiming or being credited with accomplishments or qualities. Now before we start, I want you all to know I am not condemning Shifu for his crimes, if anything I love the fact Shifu is so unapologetically happy with himself and who he is to just wake up a day after “the worst day of his life”, his words not mine, and choose violence and fraud above all things against his Master’s wishes because he didn’t get his way. Girl boss, Gate keep, and Gaslit amirite? Like what an icon!? I love this and think we should talk about it more cause it’s canon Shifu loves him some fraud and if he doesn’t get his way he will ruin everyone’s day for it. Again, we have to start from the beginning, because again, THIS IS IMPORTANT. “Oogway is choosing the dragon warrior.”, simple enough but the thing is Oogway never says it’s going to be one of the five anywhere in the film. Just “It’s time.” So, it could be anyone, he could point to the west and say “The Dragon warrior is not here but to the west.” and no one could say he lied about anything because it was Shifu hyping the whole town up with posters at the ready for HIS WIN. Not his student, his own. This is all about him. This is all about Shifu. This is Shifu’s show. And I have to highlight this short exchange between Oogway and Shifu before the tournament because it's so telling in their arcs. I know people love the joke, Oogway just dipped on Shifu to deal with his own bs, and tbh I would too cause that’s your family drama, not mine. But he warns Shifu, he feared he would not live to see this day and even implies “Whomever I choose.” again not a single confirmation he would choose one of his students, would bring him peace. And Shifu is left to ponder those words as this elaborate celebration he’d created for this “historic day they’ve been waiting 1,000 years for!” is also for him. Imagine that for a second. You are also a part of this historic day and its results.  But Shifu, our beloved idiot does not intake that in immediately, no. He’s ready to show off his five totally awesome lotto tickets, I mean the furious five. That and he’s so focused on his own grandeur, he’s out here sounding like a wrestling narrator, selling the strength and technique of his students rather than who they are outside of that skill. Which shows even he does not understand who the Dragon warrior is meant to be. Again, Oogway only says “I sense the Dragon warrior among us.” That doesn’t mean his students, just anywhere in the area. HE WAS WARNED. And then the Dragon warrior is chosen and Shifu’s immediate response is to try to stop everything even though it’s moving as it should just not in the way he wanted what’s the first thing this man does when his students, specifically Tigress apologizes for failing him?

That’s right baby, FRAUD. Didn’t even hesitate or think about it for longer than 10 seconds. Just straight up creating a toxic situation for fraud and bullying while his Master is alive and well in this world. But as we’ve established Shifu is an angry gatekeeping girl boss. And it only gets worse from here. Shifu not only threatens to kill Po but oh no. Cause that wouldn’t be enough for this Girlboss, okay? No, he’s got to demean and make fun of Po for his body and insinuate how the Dragon warrior is chosen and given the scroll when again, OOGWAY HAS NEVER SAID ANY OF THESE THINGS. And when he realizes Po is aware of the history of the Wuxi finger hold + how it affects the holder, etc, etc and even states “Oogway may have picked you and when I’m through with you. You are going to wish he hadn’t! Are we clear?” which means he’s VERY VERY VERY aware of what he is doing. Shifu willingly committed fraud. And even laughs about his decision, he is so happy with his ingenious idea to underplay what his Master, who sees him as a friend and a loyal student at his side and even supports his efforts for the tournament that wasn’t needed. It was just a flashy appetizer before the main meal. But nonetheless doesn’t tell him to stop because his hard work deserves to be shown off but also Shifu, a 60+ year old man is not only beefing with a 20 year old but also stepping all over Oogway’s decision because he is super upset he’s not the center of attention. He even throws away every shred of honor and dignity within Kung fu to make sure Po feels as unwelcome and inadequate as possible, we’ve all seen the “Level zero” scene but did y’all notice how even the furious five goes to help Po when he falls into the training Hall and Shifu straight up STOPS THEM WITH HIS HAND, and then smiles as Po screams in pain. This man enjoys fraud and revels in it with joy, it brightens his damn day more than the sun itself!!

Shifu willingly breeds and approves of his students also bullying Po because he didn’t get his “I trained the Dragon Warrior” trophy with his five lotto tickets-I mean The furious five… Which translates to the next few scenes that define their latter interactions with Po because students tend to mimic their masters. In good ways or bad ways… Especially to his daughter, Tigress who especially perpetuates Shifu’s ire toward Po even though her goal as clearly shown in the flashback was never the scroll but Shifu’s love as a father. Which the scroll would have never given her cause Shifu’s a selfish twat.  Shifu even laughs RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIS DAUGHTER, about the fact his beautiful fraud and bullying got Po to quit and he’s so smitten with himself about it as they walk to the training hall and even says “All we can do is resume our training and trust that in time, the true dragon warrior will be revealed.” He’s just outright ignoring the fact, Oogway will never change his mind about who he chose. This is peak delusion ladies and gentlemen. So, if you ever wonder why Tai Lung so easily brought up fraud in their fight scene together, just know from this moment before they opened that door to the training hall. Shifu was all about that fraud to fix his problems. Until he got into one last argument about peach trees and seeds, and Oogway died, showing he wasted his time being a controlling asshole on the final days of his friend's life. And then remembered: “Oh wait bro fraud is actually wrong, oh god what have I done!?” And then he got physically beaten up by the consequences of his actions via Tai Lung and the mere sweet scent of fraud again, which he says no to. And that’s Shifu’s not so complicated relationship with Fraud. We need more fics where people have Po and the five bringing up the fact he was cool with fraud once upon a time. It’d be funny.

hi! i do have a couple recs, i am always thinking about word of honor.

a journey to love — wuxia cdrama; the main leads have similar background and kind of same dynamic, especially with the found family aspect. in the beginning the narrative reminded me of word of honor too. I loved this drama a lot but it is very sad.

laws of attraction — thai bl; charn, one of the protagonists is very similar to wen kexing. also tinncharn has some parallels with wenzhou. this drama is so silly and fun.

the blood of youth — wuxia cdrama; a lot of the woh minor cast is in this drama. i think if you liked the vibe of word of honor you'd like this one.

heroes — wuxia cdrama; i really enjoyed this drama, it is another drama that ends in tragedy too. su mengzhen & yang wuxie are another wenzhou coded pair to me.

i haven't seen them but there's legend of fei & guardian which are other priest (word of honor's novel writer) adaptations as well as a taiwanese bl unknown apparently coming out today. they might have a similar vibe bc they came from the same author.

Till the End of the Moon - Episode 22

Now that Ye Bingchang as been appointed to care of Tantai Jin, I think we’re in for a lot of pain. I know Susu wants to reconcile for the purpose of her mission, but I don’t see that coming anytime soon.

Tantai Jin won’t let Ye Xiwu come to see him. But when he’s with Ye Bingchang, he doesn’t want to eat the food she made, he doesn’t want to talk with her and he thinks of Ye Wuxi when he asks her to make the ink for him. Ye Bingchang is upset because he doesn’t seem to fall for her at all - remember that her plan is to become his concubine - but she’s thinking it will end up working. I think she doesn’t have what it takes to give that heart what it needs to learn what is love. When she falls asleep, she dreams of two hers, arguing about betraying Xiao Lin. So are they two Ye Bingchang? I mean, does having the extra love string gives her a second personality that’s taking over her original one? Because there’s definitely something demonic about her, but maybe she wasn’t always like that? Who knows. To be honest, I may make hypothesis but it might be absolutely another thing, especially with this drama I feel. When she wakes up, Tantai Jin is having a fever. She almost gets to strangle him, but Nian Baiyu comes in. He asks her to take care of him while he goes to fetch some medicine. Tantai Jin calls out Ye Xiwu’s name which upsets Ye Bingchang.

Ye Qingyu goes to visit Pianran to offer a gift to repay her kindness with the ointments she gave him. They talk a little bit about Xiwu, but when he’s about to kiss her, Pianran pushes him away and tells him that if only wants to play, she’s going to with him, however if he’s serious about her, she won’t.

Tantai Jin leaves the camp without one look for Ye Xiwu and gets in his carriage with Ye Bingchang. All of the soldiers stare at Ye Xiwu, like they don’t understand. Pianran tells them off and when they all leave, Ye Xiwu starts crying. Pianran comforts her a little bit and takes her with her on her horse. Meanwhile, in the carriage, Tantai Jin completely ignores Ye Bingchang trying to feed him. She tries to seduce him by talking down about her younger sister. Then she tries to convince him that she can understand him. He ends up kicking her out of the carriage. She’s such a snake. She clearly knows he doesn’t like her and thinks about Ye Xiwu, yet she goes on and ask of her not to take away her only chance at survival. That it’s normal that Tantai Jin doesn’t like her so much with how she used to treat him and that later on, when she’s established, she’ll convince him not to be so hard on her. Yeah, I think she’ll try to convince him to ditch her. Having Ye Bingchang by his side will make Tantai Jin become a demon lord even faster.

Tantai Jin dreams of Ye Xiwu, thinking she came back, but then she yells at him that being with him she’s unhappy. When he wakes up, Ye Bingchang is taking care of him. He asks her if being by his side she’s happy. She’s frightened. And lies that she is. But saw through her schemes, and he knows that she followed him only because her husband is nowhere to be found and she’s basically hiding behind the tiger. She talks down on Ye Xiwu again, angering Tantai Jin and he tells her that in his heart, she’s not even worth one hair of Ye Xiwu. And with how much hair she has, that says a lot. He doesn’t trust her. Good. I like that Tantai Jin is a smart and observant person.

Susu decides she’s going back to live at her parents place for now. Only her brother didn’t notice that she’s feeling down. When she goes back to pack her stuff at the palace, Tantai Jin was in her room, waiting for her since she didn’t come to see him, but when she enters, he hides from her. He wonder if the letters she’s holding are for Xiao Lin. She takes her stuff and her piece of star before leaving. Tantai Jin reads the letters, discovering they were all for him while he was away at the borders. He rushes after her, only to see her throw down in the pond her little little Jin. He watches it sink while she leaves. I hope he gets it back for her. It was so poetic that she named the star because of him.

Ye Qingyu is coming back so the grandmother asks Susu to bring him some stuff she got for him, since her dad won’t let him come back home. When she meets with him, he tells her about what happened back in Sheng, when they took away Tantai Jin’s mother’s ashes. She rushes back to the palace, looking for him, but she can’t find him. So she goes searching for her piece of star in the pond. Then finds him in the royal crypt. She apologizes for saying hurtful things without actually knowing what was going on. And this girl needs to learn how to answer a question. When he asks her if she’s willing to stay by his side, she just asks if he likes her older sister. THAT IS NOT THE QUESTION? Why would you ask that? He just said that you’re the only person that he can’t stand looking at him with fear and hatred. What else do you need? He says that he only brought Ye Bingchang with him because he thought that would make her happy since she’s her sister. Also that he thought that liking was the way Xiao Lin treated Ye Bingchang so he imitated him. But now he understands what liking is and the only person he likes is her, Ye Xiwu. She tells him she lost her star because she threw it away when she was angry at him. She looked for it until her hands were all hurting. He gives it back to her, cause he went to get it for her. For the first time, she doesn’t emphasize the new nail that formed. She promises to stay alongside him. He tells her about the cold voice he hears when he gets closer to death and she tells him not to be afraid, because she’ll wake him up if he ever dreams about it again. But then he says that there won’t be any need to, because in his dreams now there’s only her. I’m happy for this little sweet moment, but what is the price we’re going to pay for those few minutes of happiness?

Pianran teases again Ye Qingyu by waiting for him in his bathtub but he covers her with clothes and doesn’t give in. She tells him about her lost love string and her past lover. He says he liked her ever since she saved him and that he’ll continue to pursue her, because he doesn’t wether she’s a demon or a human. Then she tells him to change his name to her past lover’s name, but he refuses because it would be disrespectful towards her past relationship. Then she’s about to leave, but he pulls her in to kiss her. And maybe they had some sexy time, I’m not super sure. When she wakes up, she goes to ask Tantai Jin to give her the remedy to the poison he gave, now that he won his war she wants to be free again. At first he says that if she left, Ye Xiwu would be sad, so she hurries to say that she’s not going to disappear and if she wants to see her she’ll come visit. However, it’s no use, because he already gave the medicine to Ye Qingyu, so she should go beg him instead.

It’s such a relief to see Tantai Jin feel some emotions. His character development is phenomenal. What I really enjoy also is that he has draw back, sometimes his old self peaks out too, so it feels that the change is progressive and natural. I like that they don’t rush into making him into the good guy. And I was afraid that they would run in circles, but so far, this is hands down one of the most well written I ever saw. No plot holes. Yet. I have faith they’ll keep it that way.

It is a toss up between the 2nd Throne of Glass book because I have it lent to me, or reading the Triage novel because it was just translated into english

Reunion: The Sound of the Providence

I honestly feel bad about rating it so low, since it had quite a few enjoyable elements and the first half was exactly what I always look for in Tomb dramas, but there were a few too many flaws that I just cannot ignore.

Starting from the things I liked. Iron Triangle as one of the best trios ever created. A typical case of characters representing a heart, body and brain, but it never felt limiting in how they were interacting with each other. All of their scenes together were easily the best in the whole show.

Likable female characters with their own goals and ideas. We all know how limited in that aspect are Tomb dramas. Here we got a variety of women with unique personalities and perspectives.

The acting was great. I think Chen Ming Hao is my favorite Wang Pang Zi at the moment. This character is always hit or miss - I either like them, or hate them. Here, he was probably one of my favorites.

Another positive thing was proper lighting. Big props to the team for making the caves/warehouses/underwater scenes look dim, but not ridiculously dark when the viewers can’t see anything. A few more candles or flashlights as the light source is all it takes for the viewers to not question how bright some places might look. The whole production quality was great - the set designs, costumes (excluding Glasses, I just cannot deal with that outfit), camera angles - all working well to create nice pictures.

To the less enjoyable things. First and second half of the show felt like completely different dramas. Not only did the plot seem too loosely connected, the main cast completely changed. We literally cut from the show the characters we followed at first.

While I appreciate the female characters, I am also a bit sad how all of them were put in the context of being romantic interests. No one watches the Tomb series for romance, this is really unnecessary.

Second half was painfully repetitive and failed to make me care about the plot progression and even the characters safety. I am sorry, but how many times can I watch Wuxie do exactly the same thing over and over again in more or less the same manner in a boring environment, surrounded by barely established characters?

Wuxie being sick. Oh god, too many times it felt like watching a wuxia with male lead being poisoned and coughing blood - so dramatic for no reason, because we all know he is not going to die. My issue was how they presented it as something dangerous, but it never felt really limiting. All the potential issues always showed up after he was done with whatever task he had to accomplish.

While I do believe everyone in the cast did an amazing job, I am also a bit bored with Zhu Yi Long (don’t kill me). There is not enough variety in the roles he takes and his portrayal of them. Sure, I only saw a few of his dramas, but it always feels like a similar character just put in a different context.

Overall, it was not bad, but felt too “all over the place”.

AAAAAAHHHHHHHH YOURE WATCHING MEDICAL EXAMINER DR QIN I LOVE THEMMMMMMMMM IM SO GLAD YOU ARE!!!!!

I am!!! Thank you (for putting random shows on my dash to pique my curiosity)! I've probably watched every English speaking drama of this category (modern, medical examiner/crime) and I'm absolutely loving Medical Examiner Dr Qin. I am now ... 6 episodes in.

So far, would highly recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it (though it came out in 2016? so ... not sure how I haven't discovered before now!)

Li Dabao is an absolute delight and I love everything about her character.

Also the main Reason Wu Xie is not in this story much, is that every time he turned up and I tried to write him, he went full on feral 'what do you mean this is a 'gen' fic' on me, so he was banned.

Medical Examiner: Dr Qin Review

To start, thank you @s1utspeare for turning me onto this show.

TL;DR: I loved it, the chemistry between the three main characters was off the charts, and Li Dabao is the most awesome character ever. It is 20 short 30ish minute episodes. For me, it is also very aro/ace friendly.

So I am biased. I have probably watched (or at least checked out), ever american (and probably some english-speaking non-American) show of this category. Mainly modern Crime Scene dramas. This one definitely follows that mold, (beyond some small differences (probably cultural)), this met expectations for it's category 100%.

I will warn this show is... very very gore-y in parts, and much more graphic than American Crime drama's tend to be. So if you don't like seeing blood, dead bodies, and other things involved in autopsies, maybe skip, or be prepared to look away. (I am not kidding, we are talking like Hannibal levels here).

There are three main characters, but I'm going to say, for me, Li DaBao is absolutely the star of the show. She is a woman in a male dominated career, and they don't shy away from making this clear, and making her struggles more obvious than I usually see. As a fellow woman in a male-dominated field, I identified so hard. She at times portrays as more masculine with her style of clothes and hair, perhaps it's to fit in, perhaps it's her own style, and her colleagues refer to her as Bao-ge (brother Bao), which I took as a sign of 'you are one of us' and 'you belong'. (I fully recognize some people may find this problematic, for me I love when my coworkers first assume I am a man, since it means they will respect me. (yay remote work making this possible)).

The friendship between the three characters is just off the charts. There are so many moments they are just THERE for each other, and the way they bounce off each other is just so good. If I could watch this show and it was just 20 episodes of them eating dinner and nothing else, I would love it.

The show is mostly your crime of the week style. (though in typical c-drama fashion I am still confused on why episodes end. Most of the crimes are about 1.5-2.5 episodes long and new cases start in the middle of episodes, so don't watch based on the episodes)

Spoilers behind the cut. (like really)

OMG That ending!?! That was the most intense hourish of my life.

The way Qin Ming kneeled without even a hint of hesitation or anything, just, couldn't drop down fast enough. Best kneeling scene I've seen in C-drama.

My other favorite Scene was when Lin Tao tried to set Qin Ming and Li Dabao up, and failed so miserably. I really hope there's fanfic around that.

I also loved Li Dabao going on blind dates, and the anti she had to meet and her absolutely glorious put down of the guy who asked her to change her career. And then we find out it's the 9th time this happened, and it makes her hilarious put-down incredibly sad because it's not that she just pulled that answer out cause she's awesome (which she is), it's because this KEEPS happening. and the Fact the other two mains always went to the same restaurant to watch her, (with her permission and knowledge I'm assuming from the reaction) and commiserated. Just So Great.

Anyways I have a lot of feels. There's just so much.

Note: Just a little Heroes drabble for my favorite polycule. I might turn it into a real story later but for now have this modern day everyone's happy and together snippet that I keep rereading whenever I remember how the show ended.

“You’re our sword,” Bai Choufei giggled, drunk, “Sheath, I mean sheath. You’re our sheath.”

Bai Choufei swayed into Wang Xiaoshi, before he steadied himself and went stumbling into Su Mengzhen.  Su Mengzhen smiled fondly down at Bai Choufei.

“So many men hugging!” Wen Rou stated, pouting. 

Wang Xiaoshi turned around and enveloped her in a hug.  Her chest was softer than Bai Choufei’s, and he might be a little drunk himself.  Wen Rou pushed him away and he let himself be pushed, worried for a moment, before he spotted her smile and she playfully shoved him.  He playfully shoved her back.  

Lei Chun rolled her eyes from where she was sitting at the kitchen table doing… something studiously, perhaps the only sober one, though with Su Mengzhen you really could never tell.

Wen Rou wandered off, distracted apparently by Lei Chun’s ‘perfectly shiny smooth hair’.  Wang Xiaoshi watched her go, content.

“Sap,” Bai Choufei said from beside him and mustled up his hair.  Wang Xiaoshi smiled up at him.

Wang Xiaoshi woke up slowly, head aching.  He carefully extricated himself from Wen Rou’s arms and Bai Choufei’s legs, sliding out the end of the bed.  Su Mengzhen and Lei Chun were both still surprisingly asleep, usually they got up before him, and they had perhaps been the most sober the night before.

He wandered into the kitchen and spotted Yang Wuxie in the kitchen.  Yang Wuxie spotted him and poured him a large mug of tea from  the teapot at his elbow and shook out an aspirin from the pill bottle next to it.

“Thanks Zhushi,” Wang Xiaoshi mumbled.  Perhaps it was weird to  call your boyfriend’s boyfriend’s boyfriend ‘advisor’, but the nickname had long since stuck.  It was probably odder to have a bed that fit six (custom made), and a relationship so complicated it required flow charts anyways.  “Ugh remind me not to get into a drinking contest with Wen Rou again.”

Yang Wuxie had the gal to laugh at that.  “I think you’ll find I did.  Last night.”

Wang Xiaoshi groaned.  Every time.
