Thales Courtyard. Seven years old.

Paris sat on the steps, a mess of sharp angles. It was a bright summer. Thales’ children grouped in bunches across the lawn.

“You’ve never played?” One of the boys asked him. 

Paris shook his head. The boy got closer. He took both of Paris’s hands in his own and intertwined their fingers. For a brief moment, it felt intimate. He’d been too young to feel repulsed by that yet.

“It’s easy. The first one to say ‘mercy’ loses,” the boy explained, waiting to see Paris’s reaction. He wasn’t afraid; he nodded his assent.

In a swift motion, their hands rotated outward. The boy pressed Paris’s wrists back up against the sockets, bending back the fingers. 

“Mercy!” Paris yelped.

The boy let go instantly. Paris shook his hands out to relieve the ache. He had hissed at first, but he quickly broke back into a smile.

“Let me try again,” he said.

House party. Sixteen years old.

Paris leaned down to light his cigarette on the stovetop burner. He’d been drinking a lot that year. The novelty had yet to wear off. All the kids that orbited him clattered around in the kitchen, seeing who could make the worst cocktail from the pre and the sugar and all the alcohol they’d stolen from the host’s parents. The ones who weren’t busy with the concoction were playing stupid games.

“You go.” One of them tapped his shoulder. He swatted the touch away on instinct, but he straightened up. The boy he played against was younger — shorter hair, shorter stature.

It wasn’t even a competition. Years of fencing had strengthened his grip to an obscene degree.

“Mercy!” the boy cried out, “Fuck, dude, stop!”

The alcohol had slowed his reaction time. It took Paris a few seconds to process the words; he’d kept pressing in the meanwhile. By the time boy pulled his hands back, there were rings of bruises around each of his fingers.

“What the hell, man?” He rubbed at the marks, shooting the prince an accusatory look.

“Baby.” Paris rolled his eyes, “Let’s play the knife game.”

The Thorn. Eighteen years old.

Paris bent Delta’s wrist back at an odd angle, pushing threateningly against the bone of his middle finger. Delta stared back with half-lidded eyes. His expression was placid — and unmistakably bored.

He did not ask for mercy. Delta never asked for anything. It was no use. Paris let go. Delta fell limply at his feet without the grip holding him up. It took longer than usual for him to get back into the kneel.

Paris kicked him roughly in the chest, forcing him back onto the floor just as soon as he’d steadied.

Wildflower patch. Nineteen years old.

Her knee pressed directly in between his shoulder blades. She was putting her full weight on it; she had to if she wanted to keep him there. Her left hand gripped the nape of his neck. Her right forced his arm back, threatening to pop out of its socket. 

It was a good pin. Paris cursed himself for having been surprised. Johanna always fought like she was feral, but there were moments it was clear just how thoroughly she must have been trained. 

He pushed up with his free arm, which only made the pain in the other worse. Johanna’s grip tightened around his neck, readjusting herself in anticipation of struggle.

“Say mercy.” Her smile was audible. She said it like she was joking. She was joking. He knew that if he had said nothing, she would’ve just let it go.

“Get the fuck off of me, you crazy bitch.” Paris’s voice was venomous. She could still hear the panic infusing it. Her heart swelled.

“Say it,” she insisted now, her voice still light. She levered his arm further up. It was slow, but without signs of stopping. Paris could tell it was about to snap. He knew her well enough by now to know she’d do it without a second though.

“Mercy,” he blurted out.

Johanna laughed, releasing him.

Nettle’s Campsite. Nineteen years old.

Once she learnt she could get it out of him, she wanted to do it every time. 

She didn’t always accomplished it. Paris wasn’t helpless, especially not if Lorelai was close. Sometimes he won. Most times, he just got away.

Not now. She twirled the length of the chain around like it was a lasso. The gesture was eerily similar to one Lorelai would’ve made. He wondered if she was making fun of them. 

Paris knew he couldn’t win. Today was one of the bad days. His breath was short. His spine wasn’t listening. He held the sword out in front of him, knowing exactly how bad it was about to be.

The chain caught on the blade, an attack he still hadn’t found a good defense against. He swore it was magnetic. With a flick of her wrist, the saber landed several meters away, totally useless. The other end of the chain came down again across his chest. It hit the sensitive skin of the scar. Johanna moved quickly, toppling him into the ground. 

Paris elbowed her in the face, starting to scramble back. She moved the chain deftly, managing to fix it around his neck. Victory was certain. She could enjoy it now. She pulled tight, pressing the metal flush against his skin.

“Say mercy!” she smiled.

His mouth only opened to gasp for air. Speech was impossible. He tapped limply at her hand. Her eyes widened in recognition. Tap out. She loosened the chain.

“Say it.” Johanna encouraged.

“Fuck you,” Paris managed through ragged breaths. She started to lift her arms up again. The chain rattled. He held a hand up. Stop.

“Mercy,” he choked.

She only got to enjoy it for a second. She had just heard the brushes being pushed aside before Lorelai’s bullet passed cleanly through her skull. Her not-quite-dead body collapsed on top of him, temporarily deprived of its motor skills. His mouth had been open when the blood splattered. It tasted like aspirin and battery acid.

Johanna’s Ship. Nineteen years old.

She really fucking had him this time. The chains were tight against his torso and around his wrists. She barely needed them. His body had entirely given out on him, no fight left at all. 

She was running out of positions to try, points to poke at, joints to press. He’d endured all of it, hoping the stupid fucking game would end like last time, that she might finally get satisfied after she’d made him repeat it twenty fucking times. There was no part of him now that didn’t hurt.

Irritation showed on her face just as easily as it did on his. She grabbed his wrist again, pushing it back. The same one she had started with. Hard and fast.

“Mercy.” His breathing picked up, the pain radiating throughout his arm. She let go, a little slower on the release this time around. 

“Jo, stop. You made your point.”

She moved her hand up to his palm, intertwining her fingers with his own. Pushing it back again. Starting over.

“Fucking stop.” He tugged his hand back as best he could with the chain binding it. His best was not much. She didn’t let up. “Mercy.”

She released the tension in his wrist, but she did not get off of him. With a slight smile, she brought her other hand up. One gripped his palm tightly, trapping the thumb. The other wrapped around his index finger. Pushing it back again. Paris let out a small sound of frustration. The chains rattled when he thrashed.

“God, stop, I’m not even fighting you anyone, I’m not even fucking fighting, can you stop, what the fuck, fucking stop stop-“

Crack.

He shuddered as the torn sound escaped his throat, somewhere between a groan and a whimper. Johanna giggled, slipping her fist off of the broken digit. She moved it a single space over, around his middle finger. The pressure started slower this time. She wanted him to catch his breath. 

“Did you forget how to play or something?” Johanna smiled at him crookedly. His eyes were shut tight. She patted his cheek lightly, trying to coax them back open. She waited until he was looking.

“You are terrible at this game."

As (mostly) everything in this opus...

They're a wasted opportunity.

IIRC in the DLC, during the necromancy/human (?) transmutation plot, Rhea mentions the Chalice cannot return a soul, less a body?

(JP!Rhea specifically says the Chalice cannot return the soul of a human (人の子 ? Child of Man?) Is she implying the Chalice can return the soul of a Nabatean - but refused to do so because the price was too high?)

Of course Agarthan Tech is supposed to be rad and all... Nemesis was "sealed" after Tailtean (uhhh) somewhere by Rhea (re-uhhh) but then the Mole People put him in their freezer (Re²-uhhh) without Rhea going ballistic (Re^3-Uhhh) and now he has thawed?

I don't know which endgame has more plotholes, SS or VW.

Anyways, Rhea thought Nemesis could return because he has the Crest of Flames (zombie!Supreme Leader when), but what about the Dudes?

Claude tries to talk to them (funny how Dub!Riegan makes a sound, but JP!Riegan is silent and only breathes) but comes to the conclusion they're just puppets - so what, are they reanimated corpses but without a soul (unlike Nemeis who kept his because of the Crest of Flames)? So what animates them? A titanus microchip inserted in their brain?

Hmm...

Now that I think about it, in Nopes, Thales said Crest Stones are the essences of a Nabatean - so if they put a Crest Stone on an animated corpse (like the 10 Elites), would it make a Nabatean or a sort of zombified!Crest Beast?

Or what would have happened in Thales'n'co tried to animate Sitri's corpse? Would it have worked like it did for the Elites (tfw Aelfie's plan sucked he should have sided with the Agarthans) but since Sitri's heart (and essence?) in within Billy, she would just have been a corpse? Or it wouldn't have worked at all?

They missed the occasion to have people fight against figures of the past who were supposed to be dead, like imagine if in VW instead of putting Blaiddyd who doesn't say a thing, they zombified!Dimi and everyone you've killed at Gronder (a bit like FE5, if you kill people you meet them as zombies later on), with Zombie!Jerry being a staple (maybe zombie!Sitri too?) ?

Both FE13 and FE14 played this tune, so why FE16 - ripe with the possibility of making zombies from corpses - didn't play it in turn?

So, the “Edelgard was designed as a rival for Byleth”-thing just clicked for me. I mean, let's look over some details.

They both have the Crest of Flames However, Byleth's came from his (I'm going to use male pronouns because Engage uses male Byleth) mother, who was an attempt by Rhea to resurrect Sothis (still believe Sitri was Sothis without her memories, a reincarnation if you will), begging Rhea to give Byleth her heart. Edelgard's came from Thales experimenting on her and her siblings to create a weapon against Rhea.

Their fathers have the Crest of Seiros and initially push their children to distrust Rhea. However, Jeralt comes to see that running away from the monastery may have been a bad idea and that maybe he should have trusted Rhea. Ionius, on the other hand, is said to be a puppet of Thales.

Byleth knows TWSITD killed Jeralt and, by default, won't side with Edelgard and them by proxy. Meanwhile, Edelgard is stated to know her father is their puppet, their influence on the Empire, and what they are doing to Ionius. She continues to work with them for her own goals.

Sothis is the ancient Greek name for Sirius, the brightest star in the heavens, and by fusing with her Byleth gains the Enlightened One class. Thales' personal class, Agastya, is the Indian name for Canopus and can mean “one who brightens in the darkness.” Thales' people became drunk on their power, viewing themselves as gods, and scorched the earth with their wars, Sothis otoh used her power to heal the damage resulting in floods. Thales creates the Flame Emperor, an allusion of Chinese folklore, while Byleth becomes the leader of Fodlan and is part dragon, much like how the Flame Emperor was defeated by the Yellow/Dragon Emperor.

Building off of 3, Rhea was the creation of Sothis while the Agarthans created Nemesis. Rhea in turn created Sitri, who birthed Rhea's successor Byleth, while the Agarthans manipulated Edelgard into being Nemesis 2.0.

Byleth has trusted allies listed under his likes (though admittedly smiles in the Japanese), whereas Edelgard was based around the idea of a lord betraying the player.

Byleth also lists helping people as one of his interests/hobbies. Edelgard, on the other hand, believes that people need to be self-reliant and that by relying on others they become weak while at the same time expecting Byleth to help her when the time comes.

Byleth is said to have the merits to lead Fodlan after being appointed Rhea's successor. Edelgard, otoh, takes credit for Byleth's leadership of the BESF to bolster her own image, needs Ferdinand to figure out how to make her ideals work (seriously, she never even thought of educating the commoers to give them a chance), Hubert to put down threats to her regime from the shadows, pilfered Agarthan tech to maintain the peace according to Byleth/Constance's ending. Byleth is appointed by Rhea to lead the Church ultimately chooses to be a the new King of Fodlan, while Edelgard complains about the responsibility thrust upon her simply because of her birth.

Byleth is a commoner, Edelgard is a princess.

Jeralt did not educate Byleth about Fodlan, leading to him needing to figure things out on his own. Edelgard's “secret Imperial knowledge” came from her father, and she ignores information that contradicts her narrative.

Byleth is a teacher, tasked with guiding his students. Edelgard is a student that wants to sway Byleth over to her side when she attacks the school.

Byleth's time at Garreg Mach results in him showing emotions for the first time in his life. He enjoys being a teacher. Edelgard's time, according to Girl from Hresvelg, causes her to grow attached to the place and makes it harder to move forward with her plans before she decides to throw it all away and start her war. However, Edelgard does not encourage Byleth's arc and instead insists he not question her when she says he is just like her in being cold and distant from others.

Byleth's paralogue is unlocked by having a support level with Rhea, but is lost if they join Edelgard.

Options that unlock Safflower are presented as “changing the story.” Byleth's story, in it's natural state, is fighting against Edelgard.

Edelgard drops her backstory in White Clouds, while Byleth learns his in Silver Snow.

Byleth's personal class is Nirvana in the Japanese, named after the path of liberation. Alternatively, Edelgard's path is called the path of the beast in Japanese, the antithesis of Nirvana. When faced as a final boss, Edelgard turns herself into a beast unit.

It really does create a narrative surrounding these two, how they are actually polar opposites to one another despite Byleth being a silent protagonist. If anything, the game plays out like this. Byleth and Edelgard are opposites, but by joining her Byleth can become like her. Byleth does not become a leader at the end. Dimitri and Edelgard are also opposites, and at the end Dimitri and Byleth lead Fodlan together. Claude is like Edelgard initially, but Byleth's influence makes him more like Byleth resulting in both kingdoms being friends with each other.

OK, up to the coronation (aka route split), but I couldn't include the coronation notes without hitting char limit.

I don't actually have too much to say here, since it's just the Kronya stuff, which... doesn't really reveal much. I'll just note that Kronya's sword has her as "Disciple Kronya" which I guess is interesting.

Since there's nothing else, I guess there's the point regarding what people know about each other going into the big part one finale:

Solon referred to Byleth as "Fell Star" already when casting Zahras, so the Agarthans had cottoned on about Byleth's situation at least in part, likely due to the Sword of the Creator.

As mentioned before, Edelgard and Hubert know that Demonic Beasts can be created artificially, and I would even say that some artificial ones already exist.

It is mentioned by several characters that Byleth's minty green color is "familiar" or "like someone else" and Flayn even directly says they match now. This is a super easy connection to make.

Seteth seems to not know that Agarthans can shapeshift, which works with Thales not wanting Kronya's body to be taken so that the specifics of their shapeshifting aren't discovered. iirc Seteth does obliquely refer to the Agarthans as being the likely culprits.

The Flame Emperor and the Death Knight being antagonists is at least known to Dimitri even though he theoretically wasn't around for the missions when we see them. Monica being an imposter is common knowledge after the fact. You doing a ceremony to receive a revelation from the goddess is common knowledge.

Anyway, the most interesting part starts after this.

Live blogging notes:

The Blue Sea star is not visible in winter. I kind of headcanon it as a planet in the same solar system, not an actual star in a different star system, but it being visible Jul to Dec and then invisible the rest of the year matches more with actual stars.

The contestants are Sylvain (from me, because I think he's cute), Dimitri (who forced him into this?? he's so desperate NOT to get picked and yet??), and Raphael (Claude apparently showing his sense of humor).

I do not understand why the "dance competition" is doing waltz movements... alone. Especially when the dancer outfit is like that...? That's not a waltz outfit. And why are they dancing alone?! Listen, I've only seen AMVs of dancing animes but, it was definitely way cooler.

You know, when GD made the promise to meet in 5 years, it was kind of cute. Not terribly meaningful, since their relationships were quite casual on the whole, but cute. Having Edelgard suggest it, knowing what she's planning barely months from now, is...... it's pretty messed up. It doesn't help that the Eagles don't really have a sense of camaraderie either.

Same cinematic for the ball. It was kind of one thing when Claude takes you by the hand and pulls you onto the dance floor (?) in GD, though the focus on Edelgard and Dimitri was pretty pointless, but here, it's just weird.

It's vaguely annoying that you can't choose who you meet at the Goddess Tower. I got Marianne on GD, and I got Ashe here... presumably because I recruited him by getting his B rank.

The chapel is within the monastery's walls.

OK, poking at the Demonic Beasts in the chapel, they are "Experimental Demonic Beasts" with "A shard from a shattered Crest Stone" embedded in their foreheads. They are a "more resilient variation." Although this won't be unique to them, they're also labelled as both "monsters" (unnatural beings wielding magic) and "dragons" (born or descended from the goddess herself).

There are 4 beasts and 3 students in trouble.

Jeralt suggests that the students being turned into beasts has "something to do with Remire," but I have come to doubt that Remire was a test run or directly related to the same research. The timeline is just too tight, and the Sothis paralogue won't make sense.

Thales tells Kronya she must survive because there's a role he needs her to fulfil, but then Solon will kill her in like a month. In a scene later, he says that his only aim was actually to keep the mystery of their bodies from being revealed, which would happen if Kronya died (her body could be taken by the Church, I guess).

Worth noting that Seteth is very confused about Tomas and clearly does not know that Agarthans can shapeshift.

The explanation for why Byleth accepts Jeralt's death is still so weak. "It's fate," says Sothis. OK, but like, why. Because Thales said so??

Guardian Moon (January) is named after Seiros, who first appeared during this month.

The scene with Edelgard after Jeralt's death is a bit... She starts with a very tough love "have you lost the will to act" approach and discusses how no one can understand your sadness. Others can only offer the tears of an outsider. So she won't cry for you or stand still with you, she can only promise to offer her hand when the time comes for HER to move forward. Which is such a weird direction to take? What does this promise have to do with Byleth grieving?

Thales describes the Flame Emperor as their greatest creation, powerful enough to "burn even the gods." So it seems like they experimented on Edelgard specifically to create a powerful soldier who could face Rhea.

Based on this, it does seem like Edelgard targeting the church is a combination of needing to keep the Agarthans cooperating with her by going along with their aims and getting rid of the Knights in case their interfere (since the Knights supported Loog's separation from the empire). Very impersonal, despite how she sometimes frames it.

Edelgard directly tells Thales that there will be no salvation for their kind and blames them for Duscur (and the shit they caused in Enbarr, presumably the Insurrection of the Seven?).

Sylvain says that most noble children are tested at birth to see if they have a crest. Of course, he also says you can't be the heir without one, but like... Ingrid's family wants to marry her out and she's specifically the only one with the crest, so...

The dancer animation is killing me. It's so stupid.

Hubert suggests that the real aim behind Jeralt's murder was to provoke the Knights into spreading themselves thin hunting his killer.

Manuela says the dagger that killed Jeralt wasn't made of iron or steel and the wound it caused wasn't ordinary.

A lot of the named Church people are out of the monastery this month. Which means you can't train with them, which is annoying...

Dorothea casually drops how she had to survive kidnappings, attempted murders, and who knows what while at the opera. Girl, what??

Linhardt mentions, as we're entering the Sealed Forest, that we have no official mission this month. I guess things were too chaotic to assign us anything.

Kronya is using a sword called Athame, which is described as being crafted with archaic methods. Kronya herself is referred to as "Disciple Kronya." She also has a passive called "Agarthan technology" which makes adjacent foes deal 3 less damage. Is this the weird tentacles she has behind her?

Regarding the Sealed Forest itself, there's some ruins, the platform Kronya waits on (where Solon casts Zahras, which uses the pillars on the edges), a glowing red stone embedded in a sigil on a ruin wall, and the remains of mechanical weapon (I think the kind Rhea keeps in the Tomb in her paralogue?).

It snows on the Locket, I guess because the Throat is a mountain range.

The Holy Mausoleum vs Holy Tomb thing is SO confusing that Rhea has a dialogue line that uses the wrong one lmao

Everyone at the monastery knows we're going to receive a revelation, but Manuela mentions that this is the first time she's heard of the Holy Tomb.

One of the Knights at the monastery mentions that he noticed more people in town than usual. Edelgard's hidden troops are on the move...

Dimitri mentions "this month's mission," so it seems Blue Lions have one, which should NOT be going down into the Tomb with Byleth... I would say this, but Felix's dialogue expects you to do something about Dimitri and like... he's not in my class, dude...

So in Three Houses this is blatantly false, it seems the Empire just moves through the southern Oghma Mountains to reach Garreg Mach. If they marched through Gloucester territory then the BESF wouldn’t need to take the Great Bridge because they’d be already over the Great Bridge.

As for Hopes, in Scarlet Blaze Edelgard concludes some manner of agreement with Lords Gloucester and Acheron to allow the Imperial troops free moments through their territories. In Golden Wildfire, Claude rather jumps the gun in rushing to secure the border, forcing Edelgard to take a more offensive approach.

As for House Burgundy...

So they sided with the group with which Edelgard had declared war. They chose a side.

Yeah, more or less. Needs must; she’s trying to usher in social reforms and new opportunities for the people of Fodlan.

She doesn’t believe in land ownership as a sacred right (this necessarily would include her if she lost whatever leverage she had over the Empire, mind you.)

Fire Emblem has toyed with the idea that a country is made up of its people and nothing else before:

Caeda: My father has a saying: “A kingless country is a country still; but a king without subjects rules naught but hills.” If you disobey your king to ensure his subjects’ safety, how is that a betrayal? You are protecting his reign. 

A country is its people, not its imaginary lines on a map. The difference here is that Claude and Dimitri do view national sovereignty as something to be upheld at all costs, while Edelgard believes in breaking it if that’s the cost to help people that have been suffering under an oppressive aristocratic hierarchy for a millennia and with no end in sight.

Yeah, we’re back to this again. Aymr means Edelgard’s a puppet because muh Devil Arcana.

Including the one where she successfully turns on them??? Okay.

This time the Analyzer is actually correct: Edelgard using Aymr there is symbolic of her being under their control. So he got his one W!

Also, in case anyone needed a reminder, the Analyzer believes Edelgard’s horrific final state in AG represents her being “cleansed” of corruption.

Wait, the good route where Byleth and Sothis don’t die is the one where Edelgard gets the mark of her corruption? Isn’t that a little backwards?

That’s actually not true because Edelgard never gives them what they want. Ever. The closest she can ever come is killing Rhea, Seteth, and Flayn in Crimson Flower (and the latter two are optional). Their plan wasn’t “kill Rhea then we can die happily,” it was “kill every surviving Nabatean, purge the surface dwellers, and recolonize our land.”

It’s not exactly a successful plan if your pawn completes steps 1 and 2 and then turns on you and kills you with steps 3 through 10 not even started yet.

Edelgard’s not Dimitri, she doesn’t need to take violent revenge on her abusers to be happy. Whoever does it, just knowing Thales is dead would be enough to put her past to rest.

And also, whether or not the player defeats the Agarthans isn’t relevant to whether Edelgard turns on and defeats them. The point is that in CF and SB she successfully turns on and deals the Agarthans crippling blows.

Uhh no, CF ends with the Agarthans losing. Unequivocally. SB, eh, I wouldn’t even say SB ends because the writers of Hopes deliberately structured each route to end on a cliffhanger.

Mechs & Fodlan

So I have been thinking about the development of Fodlan after Fire Emblem. Specifically in Azure Moon. I have three head canons and that form the background of a story I have been thinking about how Fodlan becomes friends with Almyra.

Headcanons

1. Garreg Mach Monastery probably has a cache of knowledge that can kick of the Fodlan version of the renaissance. I mean, we already know that Rhea was suppressing technological advancements but I don’t just mean that. I am pretty sure that there is some old, old, like from the time of Sothis herself knowledge in Garreg Mach and Rhea wasn’t sharing because she was affaid of humanity reaching another Great Filter event and this time, without Sothis to restore Fodlan.

2. So the Agathean that helped Loog and Kyphon rebel against the Empire was Pan. We don’t know what happened to Pan or if Pan was just an alias for the Agatheans we do see, since the Agatheans seem to have some form of immortality since Thales is supposed to be at least a 1000 years old.

My headcanon is that Pan is still alive somewhere in the depths of Shambala and was a prisoner because Pan genuinely began to care about Loog and Kyphon. I mean, we can guess that the creation of the Kingdom probably didn’t go according to Agathean plans given the Kingdom becomes the HOLY Kingdom fo Faerghus and becomes even more closely associated with the church.

Anyway, I think Fodlan can get a second cache of knowledge from Shambala in Azure Moon, where Shambala is NOT destroyed, and with Pan’s help, it could further accelerate Fodlan’s development.

3. The last of my headcanons is that Fodlan is likely to get Mechs from the Royal School of Sorcery in Fhirdiad sooner rather than later. I mean, already in Three Hopes we see Sylvain trying to invent a personal fire orb with the help of the  Royal School of Sorcery in Fhirdiad. Also, we known that Hanneman invents magicals tools that could be used even without the aid of crests.

Because of the emphasis the games put on Fodlan wanting to move toward tools that need training instead of a particular genetic make-up and because we know that Fodlan was in the past more technologically advanced, I think Fodlan is the closest of all the mainline Fire Emblem continents to Fire Emblem Heroes  Niðavellir style mechs!

The Story of Almyra

So this brings me to Almyra. I assume that Claude/Khalid becomes King of Almyra in Azure Moon but it’s unlikely to be a walk in the park. I can see his siblings opposing him. But maybe Azure Moon Claude didn’t return to Almyra and make a powerplay.

Maybe he went travelling instead, after having to suffer through five years of war and struggling to keep the Alliance neutral and intact!

So the story I thought of is that while Claude is galivanting about, he gets word that Almyra suffered a devastating natural disaster that was bad enough that led to prolonged chaos that weakened his father’s position. This in-turn led to some of his siblings and relatives to via for power not just through court intrigue but it all spilt over to a civil war.

So he returns, tries to support his father but Almyra can’t catch a break and more natural disasters follow. The Almyran state is overwhelmed, some provinces are completely uninhabitable and others are being overwhelmed by refugees. So as much as Claude hates owing people, he makes the decision to put aside his ego and once again reach out to Byleth and Dimitri.

Fodlan wasn’t totally oblivious to what was happening since trade routes were disrupted and even though the bulk of the disaster and war happened in Easter and Central Almyra, Western Almyra suffered enough that some refugees were showing up at the Fodlan’s Throat for there to be a mini humanitarian disaster!

So when Dimitri and Byleth gets a request for aid, they mobilise their fancy new mechs which are excellent heavy equipment not just for war but for peace time activities as well!

The mechs are so successful that following the period of emergency, Almyra enters into a trade agreement with Fodlan so they can build mechs or at least manufacture components so that between the two nations, they have an efficient supply chain that leads both nations progressing greatly!

Ive talked about my contempt for Golden Dumpsterfire and 3 Hopes in general for disrespecting Claude and the Golden Deers numerous times so here's how I'd personally fix these problems.

In the process I'll also make changes to Azure Gleam's structure which i will explain in due time.

One of the main problems is that Claude teams up and fights against the wrong people. He teams up with Edelgard who has done nothing but hurt Leicester and fights against Dimitri and Rhea who both work hard to get rid of Fodlan's problems that Claude has issues with. Specifically nationalism, crests, heroes relics, seiros faith, merit vs lineage.

Dimitri and Rhea get rid of nationalism by helping Duscur reclaim their land and respect, Dimitri has consistent conversations with the leader of Duscur and it's people and they allow Petra, a foreign queen who fought for the Empire, to be an active member of their army.

As for the rest Dimitri acknowledges that crests and heroes relics aren't gonna be here forever and that people deserve higher positions like being nobles and knights serving in his army if their up to the task as shown with Ashe and the other commoners in his army.

Not to mention Houses Claude among many other characters condemn Edelgards violent approach to changing Fodlan, which is to kill and conquer.

So with all of that in mind there is 0 reason for Claude to side against Dimitri and 0 reason to side with Edelgard.

So with all of that out the way it's time to start talking about the changes I'd make.

For starters the only change I'd make to part 1 is that it's Hubert who leads the main assault on Leicester, not Ferdinand. Reason for that I'd that i want Ferdinand and all the black eagles and blue lions to be recruitable just like how the golden deers are recruitable in the other routes.

Now for part 2 it essentially follows the same structure as Azure Gleam which is provoke the empire, retreat into Ailell and finish things off at the Monestary by defeating both Edelgard and Thales.

Now this is personal and subjective but letting Golden Wildfire just be Azure Gleam but attack from the west would be a disservice to both routes and especially the golden deers since they already suffer from having the same chapters and structure as Silver Snow in Houses.

So here's where i come up with the solution to change Azure Gleam's structure. Instead of going with a strategic plan to defeat the Empire the circumstances in Azure Gleam allows them to go for an offensive approach. I'd let the 3 way battle between the factions happen earlier in part 2 which gives Dimitri to opportunity to invade Adrestia and finish things off in Enbarr.

Plus this change fits both of their characters better since Dimitri is more on the offensive side of things while Claude is more tactical and cunning.

And one last thing Edelgard being brainwashed into a helpless infant by Thales gets removed. Straight up. That junk doesn't benefit anyone in anyway and only hurts the story and cast.

Ionius being a liar is iirc one of the earliest fanons (with the fanon theory that Ionius is the one who offered his kids to Thales to get a super strong Emperor, after the experiments failed on him and left him, well, look like what he looks like + having an anime cough of doom)

He's also the guy who, in the jp version, leaves "Adrestia- no Fodlan" to his daughter, showing that yep, Ionius really believes Fodlan = Adrestia or at least Adrestian Emperors have a greater duty to Fodlan, even if since the end of the WoH and Willy's time, Fodlan became 3 states and not, just, Adrestia.

Our shadows. These dark doubles who have been with us everywhere since we were very young, since our first day. They are the same as us and different. They're there, and yet no one pays any attention to them, as if they simply didn't exist. But, dear readers, you're wrong. At this point, you're probably thinking "but why is she bothering us by describing something we all already know".

I understand and I was thinking the same thing. But know that you're completely wrong, from start to finish. But to make you understand, we have to go back to the beginning of our story, perhaps even a little further. So that you understand the importance of paying attention to everything that happens in this world, even if it seems as insignificant as our shadow.

If something exists, its opposite must also exist. A fundamental law of the universe developed in every field, from mathematics to philosophy, from Thales to Theophrastus. Theophrastus said that "everything is born from the separation of opposites". Our world is built on this fundamental law. If the moon exists, then its opposite must be the sun. If rain exists, then drought must be its opposite. Cold and heat, life and death, effort and rest... And of course shadow and light. Based on this, if YOU exist then your opposite also exists.

But what if everything was separate? What if the opposites were no longer two sides of the same coin, but two very different coins in two very different purses? What if there was once a positive world and a negative one? Let's work on this theory together.

If our world was one of dreams, light, joy and life. The world of our shadows must have been a nightmare filled with darkness, pain and morbidity. To better understand our shadows, I will begin by describing these worlds. Because how can you better understand a species than through its history and the environment that shaped it?

Our world was colourful and calm. The buildings were all the same author, fairly flat and all in a fairly simple style. Life in this colourful world was happy and pleasant, but full of trouble and banality. A 'perfect' life, timed, without hatred or competition. Everyone was happy, and everyone had a life all mapped out for them. Without expectations or hopes. Nobody really died. There were only births and rebirths. Maybe that's the perfection we're trying to chase, nostalgic for a past we've run away from?

And on the other side of the world from us, I can't tell you where, you had a dark, black world. Not a ray of light could penetrate the thick clouds that sat there. Everything was different and yet everything was the same. It was a turbulent life filled with failure and disappointment. The buildings were all dark and different shapes, you couldn't see the end of them because they were so high. In some ways, they were all unique, and that made them all similar, with their wacky, undulating shapes making everything complicated. Life in this world was full of hope, but without success. Everyone was full of uncertainty, nothing was planned and everything was creatable. Nobody was born there, there was only death and the dead coming back to die again. If the other world was there, perfection. Then this one had to be imperfection itself.

But now that I've described it to you, I realise that it's just two hells, one bright with deceptively pleasant smells. And the other is gloomy and sincerely putrid.

If you've got this far you must be asking yourself a question. This is supposed to help you understand the shadows of the world we know, but it does nothing to describe this mysterious species? And how did we get here?

Have you heard the expression 'opposites attract'? Nothing could have been further from the truth when the two worlds, so peaceful and restless for millennia, collided without warning and caught everyone unawares. It was an inexplicable phenomenon that threw all habits into disarray. Cohabitation seemed impossible. Men tried to rebuild their routines, and shadows tried to create as much as they could out of nothing, but as soon as they went to the light side of the world, they disappeared for good.

The most human of men and the darkest of shadows. As the world fell apart. All it takes is one step too straight to stray from his path, and one step too wandering to avoid crossing hers, to create something no one thought existed. Love. This unknown feeling that mixed joy and sorrow, routine and surprises, inexplicable and logical. Little by little, shadows discovered happiness, and men discovered sorrow. All it takes is one shadow and one man, fundamentally opposed yet frighteningly similar, to create a love that is both forbidden and perfect. Men and shadows join forces to change this world. A pact saddled and forgotten by men but honoured by shadows.

This created our world. Full of sorrow and joy, vice and goodness. Shadows are a fundamental part of us. Free by night, watching over us by day.
