Once upon a time, I found this post of @puddingcatbeans on Pinterest and I thought it would be funny to draw it in a very silly way.

I simply think this fandom doesn't give Wei Wuxian enough credit for the various ways in which he saved Lan Wangji
#mdzs#mo dao zu shi#wangxian#idk man- i just see a lot of “Lan Wangji has always been protecting Wei Wuxian” posts and its like...#I mean... Lan Wangji has always certainly been trying to protect Wei Wuxian#it took him a long time to figure how to successfully do that though#rereading the books rn and noticing theres a lot of instances that could be read as lwj being frustrated over his inability to protect wwx#like he seemed ready to cry when wwx went missing for a while and then came back with the cursed leg#lwj has always been great at protecting wwx from physical threats (ex: waterborn abyss) but had no idea how to protect him from himself#meanwhile wwx has always been instictually good at saving lwj from both#like I'm 100% lwj would've become like Jiang Cheng if wwx hadn't snapped him out of the blindly following authority thing#and also like... 15 y/o lwj wasnt happy with his life. he was lonely and stressed and literally signing up to be flogged whenever he goofed#wwx is who allowed lwj to grow up by showing him what it was like to actually be a kid (shown in story whenever lwj gets drunk)#he led lwj to having a more flexible mindset. and it both let lwj relax and set lwj up to be a better parent#looking into lwj's dynamic with the juniors- he lets them break a fuck ton of the petty rules and encourages them to question authority#he also teaches them to not be married to any one meathod of problem solving#wwx is also able to save lwj from his own stubbornness#ex: carrying lwj when he broke his leg. getting lwj to cough up bad blood. getting lwj to keep the rabbits#wwx also tends to give lwj the words he has trouble saying himself. helps him communicate#wwx also protects lwj in fights a lot but thats narratively less important#except the various times wwx puts himself in danger to help lwj. those times are what made it so lwj could never move on from wwx#like with the cave incident#or when wwx helped surpress the arm instead of using the chaos to escape cloud recesses#tldr i guess: i think this fandom tends to treat lwj being the best like its natural to him when really wwx accidentaly rewired his brain#I'm looking directly at fanfic writers who act like the Lans would've treated wwx better than the Jiangs#lwj had to do so much work and self reflection post meeting wwx to be the way he is. he is not the sole product of the Lan teachings

just had this idea that i'll definitely never put on paper because i have no time 🥲
wangxian have a biological child post canon, at cloud recesses, and the kid grows up with wwx being the strict partner and not in the funny kind of way but actually very strict, especially with manners. wwx is always scolding his child because they dirtied their clothes, played with other children in public, laughed a bit too loud, cried too much, and the kid kinda ended up running to lwj a lot because of that
when the kid grows up he realizes a bit too late why his father was like that and why his other father never said anything and only looked sad - and he only realized that /that/ expression on his face wasn't annoyance or exasperating as they thought when they were a child. wwx was deeply afraid that his child would be treated either poorly or like him in the sect just because they are the yllz's child. there's a rule about interacting with him, will they extend it to his child? will they click their tongues and say that's expected from the spawn of that man when the child does something as simple as being happy? will they? will it? what if-?
so instead of being an angst emo teen who cries that their parents don't understand them, they turn their anger at their clan and sect, and later at the cultivation world when they are told by their Yuan-gege about the story of yllz before and after his death and then confronts lwj about it to get more details and ends up crying on his father's lap asking for forgiveness for all the tantrums, confused anger and unsolicited snaps all these years but wwx cries back and instead of forgiving his child he asks to be forgiven himself because it wasn't fair, he wasn't a good parent

Do i think that WangXian would ever actively go out looking to adopt a child?
No
I do however fully believe that they do keep accidentally taking full responsibility for children and preteens who are lost and alone while steadfastly denying that they are, in fact, that child's fathers.

The book hits so different from the show in terms of Wuxian's guilt/responsibility for everything that went wrong. After only having watched the show I was so fierce about him carrying guilt that should never have been his, but now having read the book I get that he's a lot more morally grey since he didn't get the out of someone else controlling his puppets. And that's good but also a very painful adjustment in my perception of him as a character.

in which wei wuxian has a little outing with some of his friends and hes still living with the jiang and the outing is from evening to night. idk maybe theyre watching a movie. and his friends (lwj is there too and wx are 100000% in love with each other as per usual) ask wei wuxian how hes getting home bc theyre all getting picked up or have a car and he says yu ziyuan is making him go home on his own late at night via metro/subway. his friends get a little worried but he appeases their worries by cracking a joke or sm, also he knows martial arts and hes good at it and never leaves the house without a swiss knife or a switch blade. but lan wangji is not okay with it and everything wei wuxian says to try make things sound better honestly just worries him even more.
he offers to drop wei wuxian off at his house but he declines, not wanting to be an imposition. this makes lan wangji mad because wei ying can never be an imposition to him ever. wei wuxian gets all red and says he'll think about it.
in the end of their outing, lan wangji reminds wei wuxian of his offer, and wei wuxian declines saying,
"lan zhan its okay! ill be fine, i dont want to bother you i know its already past your little lan curfew. besides, i have a knife and i know how to use it nothing will happen to me!" he offers a winning smile to lan wangji, hoping he'll believe it and go home but he dosent.
wei wuxian is evidently tired too, especially after a long night and characteristic inadequate sleep and popcorn, a red bull and a granola bar fueling him the entire day. knowing him, wei wuxian would likely fall asleep in the subways and get home later than yzy demanded he gets home by an be in trouble.
"wei ying." he says sternly, a slight furrow in his elegant eyebrows, a squint in his eyes and thinnlt pursed lips.
"you are not bothering me. i would worry even if you had a gun."
wei wuxian chuckles, a lovely pink blush highlights his supple cheeks.
"alright lan zhan, take me home"

Bored, so part two of the Proper Cryptid AU™
The Burial Mounds whispers to Wei Wuxian. It learns that screaming and shouting just angers him - and that didn't bother It at first, until he begins learning how to use the resentful energy twisting through his body without having to ask the Burial Mounds. That makes him dangerous, but it's too late to pull away from the mortal turned...whatever he has become. So, It tries to appease him, keep him happy and content so that he doesn't notice how the power has shifted. It whispers instead of screams, asks instead of demands, suggests instead of simply taking control and puppeteering the dead body with a cracked soul. He won't notice how powerful he could be even without Its help. (He notices.) It whispers of revenge, and only revenge, at first. At first It floods his brain with the knowledge necessary to find and hunt his killer down. Even if that is simple things such as reading and writing, fighting, cultivating (a twisted, dirty version of it), anything to remove any and all obstacles in his path and then take the revenge that his blood (sluggish, coagulated blood) sings for when he remembers the unbothered face of his killer. Or would-be killer. He argues with himself about it, at first - is he dead? He was alive when he invited the Burial Mounds in, on the verge of death but still alive, but had he died in those few moments between him and it? Soon, it doesn't matter to him, because he knows that he isn't human anymore. He just wants to take his revenge, and soothe the spirits that cry at night, wishing and begging for freedom. (If setting them free means using them, then he will fashion a flute and use them.) As he hones himself to become a perfect weapon, an extension of the Burial Mounds and Its master all in one, the whispers of revenge turn to whispers of warning. The golden-clad man from the day of Wei Wuxian's death rebirth wishes to copy the ritual, the curse, after seeing how powerful the other man is becoming. (Who cares if it could be coincidental? Power is power.) Wei Wuxian wishes to help, but the Burial Mounds won't tell him anything more. He is not at the stage where he scares the information out of It instead, so he continues to learn, keeping an eye on the boundaries of the Burial Mounds that he made much clearer, more formal, when he learned how to. He learns, he frees, and he waits. When a child runs to the boundaries, screaming and crying and bleeding, with golden clad men in pursuit, Wei Wuxian shoves down the urge to make them feel how he this child feels ('too soon,' It whispers to him, 'too soon to reveal yourself.'). Instead, he reaches out and snatches the sobbing child into his arms, across the boundaries, and presses them close to his chest. The Burial Mounds screams in delight at the new sacrifice, the fresh blood being spilled, another weapon, a weaker-willed one this time- Wei Wuxian does not let It have the child. He carves a place in the Burial Mounds that is fit for a child, for a normal human, and he makes It bend to his will for the first time. (This time will not be the last.)

The storyline of MDZS is so chaotic and I'm all for it. MC born in another body? Well, let's introduce a whole buncha characters he knew in his previous life and so many chekov's guns. Now let's explain his past? No, let's be weird in the present with random tiny references to VERY IMPORTANT events in his THOUGHTS. Okay, the reader might finally be following this cutesy detective storyline? Let's go back some twenty years to explain a single line that this gay ass said to his gayer ass. The timeline of the past making sense? Let's have another flashback inside this fucking flashback!

My goodness there is a lot of bullshit in the Jiang Cheng tag again.
#y'all really spend too much time thinking about a character you dislike#i on the other hand have severe jiang cheng brainrot and love thinking about him and reading scenes of the novel to back me up#so just to get it out#jiang cheng has at no point treated wei wuxian as a servant#he also did not abandon him right up until the moment wei wuxian killed jin zixuan and i think jc would've probably gotten over that#if it hadn't led directly to Jiang Yanli's death#again wei wuxian's defection was a fake ploy they made up to keep yunmeng jiang safe it is right there in the book#jiang cheng did in fact publicly acknowledge the debt he and wei wuxian owed to wen ning and wen qing (at least the amount he was aware of)#but was steamrolled over by the other sect leaders especially Nie Mingjue#talking about the wen remnants they were not just old people and kids like in the drama but actually cultivators#and it is very possible that they were part of the invading force of Lotus Pier because Wen Ning was there with some cultivators under him#and even though I still think it was wrong of jiang cheng to lead the siege of the burial mound why is anyone pretending that it was about#murdering the wen remnants for him and not getting to wei wuxian#and this isn't to say that Jiang Cheng is completely misunderstood and all good#he is still a deeply unpleasant person with a mountain of trauma#he isn't as bad or selfish as some of you make him out to be#just like wei wuxian isn't as good and pure as some of you like to pretend#all of the mdzs characters are at least a little awful with the notable exception of the kids and maybe Xiao Xingchen#thank you for coming to my ted talk

Post-canon Wei ying’s dynamic with the juniors is so funny to me bcs these kids do not understand how terrifying this man is. They’re like “oh Wei wuxian yeah he’s a fucking idiot” meanwhile everybody older than them remembers him slaughtering thousands and commanding an army of ghosts against the Wens. Everyone who was older remembers that he was the only reason they won the sunshot campaign.
And I think it would be so funny the moment that some mission goes south and Wei Ying has to take control of the situation in order to save them and be actually fights for the first time in front of them.
These kids would be like bro tf as the silly guy they all these suddenly exploded with resentful energy - like we know he can control the energy itself in a combative way (eg. He spears wen chao and wen zhuliu in the show), so he’s like tearing these enemies apart and the juniors are just watching.
And then at the end he turns around and his eyes are still red and chenqing is in his hands and they’re all just staring at him in bewilderment. Ofc (being the idiot he is) Wei Ying immediately freaks outs and assumes they’re all disgusted by him.
That is until Jingyi crashes out and was like “THAT WAS SO COOL WHAT THE HELL” and Jin Ling is just mad that he always makes them fight when he can obviously hand himself. Wei Ying is dumbfounded for a sec but then he’s really happy because he was so scared for a sec there.
The juniors are Wei Yings number one fans nobody can convince me otherwise.
