Favorites : Crooklyn (1994)

One of the first films I remember anticipating heavily was Spike Lee’s semi-biopic, Crooklyn.  I’d recently become a huge fan after viewing a number of his previous classics, including Do the Right Thing, Mo’ Betta Blues, School Daze and Jungle Fever, and I was hungry for more.  Like many did in those days, I purchased the soundtrack and waited patiently for a chance to see the film, but due to its limited theatrical run and moderate box office, I had to wait until it came to video.  Needless to say, it became one of my favorite Spike Lee films, and it draws an emotional response from me every time. 

The summer of 1973 is upon the residents of the Bedstuy neighborhood of Brooklyn, including the Carmichael family.  Woody Carmichael (Delroy Lindo), a struggling jazz musician, and his wife Carolyn (Alfre Woodard), a schoolteacher, are doing their best to make the ends meet and keep their marriage together, as well as raise and protect their five children : teenagers Clinton (Carlton Williams) and Wendell (Sharif Rashed), younger boys Nate (Chris Knowings) and Joseph (Tse-Mach Washington), and lone girl Troy (Zelda Harris).  The family does what they can to take care of one another, and when they’re not fighting amongst themselves, they are navigating their way among the other residents of the neighborhood : the filthy, animal-hoarding Tony Eyes (David Patrick Kelly), upstairs tenant Vic Powell (Isaiah Washington) and his girlfriend Jessica (Ivelka Reyes), the young-at-heart Tommy La La (Jose Zuniga), and local drug addicts Snuffy (Spike Lee) and Right Hand Man (N. Jeremi Duru), not to mention the tons of other children in the neighborhood.  Troy starts the summer as any other, getting into trouble and fighting with her brothers, with no idea about the amount of growth in store for her by summer’s end.

Spike Lee is known for his proficiency in genre, aesthetic and style, but for my money’s worth, this clearly feels like the most personal of his stories.  For those familiar with his family, you find echoes of his famous jazz-musician father Bill Lee in Delroy Lindo’s portrayal in Woody Carmichael, and Joie Susannah Lee is characterized in the form of Troy Carmichael, played by Zelda Harris.  He even goes so far as to include the infamous story of the New York Knicks championship game conflicting with an important concert his father performed.  His beloved Bedstuy neighborhood of Brooklyn is presented at a time where white flight was dying down, causing a shift in the ethnic demographics and exposing tension between those from different backgrounds and cultures.  

Crooklyn has the feel of a John Cassevettes film, where a mixture of well known character actors, new actors and non-actors come together for extremely personal stories.  The film takes on the ‘slice of life’ approach, where we are given vignettes that serve as glimpses into the family dynamic, the conflicts found within, and the growth that all involved go through.  Many taboo topics are addressed directly, and often ham-handed, including homosexuality, drug abuse, racism, economic disparity and ‘questionable relationships’ between minors and adults.  Many positive elements from the time are present in the film as well, such as vehicles, wardrobe, record players and a plethora of period-specific toys.

For such a personal story, the way that the camera floats in and out, around, and through the world, in combination with the editing, makes the viewer feel like a spirit observing the domestic chaos.  Lee’s signature dolly shot is literally turned on it’s head.  Lee also blew many people’s minds by portraying ‘down south’ via a wide lens squished into a standard aspect ratio.  The soundtrack is stellar, and a perfect starting point for anyone curious about soul, R&B and pop music from the 1970s.  A small point of interest that always caught my attention... while in the south, Troy witnesses a man that looks very much like Tony Eyes on the TV singing a hymn to children, and I always wondered if he was purposefully meant to be the same character.  Humor is certainly not sacrificed at the expense of the personal narrative, with many touching moments punctuated by sincerely and naturally funny moments.

Alfre Woodard and Delroy Lindo’s chemistry is tense and tumultuous... both display a capability to love deeply, but are blinded by their own individual focuses of taking care of the family and finding personal validation in music, respectively.  Zelda Harris gives a captivating performance for such a young actress, displaying a range of emotions that seems to outreach her experience.  Carlton Williams, Sharif Rashed, Chris Knowings and Tse-Mach Washington give a perfect variance of rowdy boy energy, matching their unique looks.  The majority of the story focuses on the family, with the rest of the cast providing strong support, including (but not limited to) Isaiah Washington, David Patrick Kelly, Joie Susannah Lee, Curtis Vondie Hall, N. Jeremi Duru, Jose Zuniga, Frances Foster, Tiasha Reyes and even Spike Lee himself.  RuPaul and Bokeem Woodbine also pop up in the film.

Crooklyn wouldn’t be the film that I use to introduce someone to Spike Lee, but if they respond positively to, say, two of his films, this would more than likely be the third film of his that I share.  As time goes on, it has revealed how deep his capacity for compassion was, and how it was set that way so long ago.
