Volkswagen ID.3 Cabriolet, 2023(?). VW is gauging support for an open-roof version of their electric C-segment hatchback. VW Group CEO Herbert Diess took to Twitter to introduce the concept, asking his followers: "We‘re thinking about an e-convertible, maybe an ID.3 convertible. What do you think?" VW  sales boss Jürgen Stackmann told Autocar  "from a rational side, you would never go into the convertible market" but Autocar points out that the flexibility of the ID 3's MEB architecture means development and manufacturing costs would be lower than with a similarly conceived ICE model

VW is thinking of turning the ID.3 into its first convertible EV
[ad_1] Volkswagen developed the ID.3 as an electric alternative to the Golf. It’s offered only as a four-door hatchback, but several members of the company’s top brass expressed their wish to see a convertible variant join the range. Ralf Brandstätter, the CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, posted a pair of sketches that depict an ID.3 Cabriolet on his personal LinkedIn page. Volkswagen boss…

THE MOST EXCITING CARS OF 2020, AS REVIEWED BY DRIVING.CO.ULAST YEAR was one marked by boredom. Large swathes of it were spent indoors thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, forcing us to take up hobbies like doing jigsaw puzzles, reading books or baking banana bread.
That applied to car reviewers, too: press deliveries were (understandably) halted, launches were pushed back to next year and reveals were taken online.
However, there were periods before and between the various lockdowns during which reviewing resumed, and for short, sweet periods we remembered the thrill of driving new cars. Here are eight of the most exciting models Driving.co.uk tested in 2020.
1. New Land Rover Defender
Land Rover Defender
The Land Rover Defender, needless to say, is one of the most recognisable automotive icons of all time. The old silhouette, famously first conceived as a sketch in the sand, remained relatively unchanged for the better part of a century, meaning that the new one, which doesn’t share a single component with its rugged predecessor, was seen as progress by some and sacrilege by others. Either way, it arrived to nearly impossibly high expectations.
However, the new model, kitted out with modern accoutrements like independent air suspension and 3D cameras, is “leagues better in every way” than its predecessor, reckoned Driving.co.uk editor Will Dron. High praise indeed.
Read our review of the Land Rover Defender here.
2. Volkswagen ID.3
Volkswagen ID.3
Volkswagen can split its eighty-something-year history into three distinct sections, each represented by one of its machines. First was the, erm, problematic conception of the brand with the VW Beetle, a “people’s car” designed by Ferdinand Porsche on the instructions of Adolf Hitler. Second was a period marked by the Golf, the quintessential hatchback and the yardstick against which all family cars are judged.
The third, says VW, began in 2020 with the launch of the ID.3, its electric hatchback. And this car isn’t just a big moment in VW’s canon — it’s one of the biggest PR projects the company has ever undertaken, launching a range of vehicles that aims to mend the still lingering spectre that is the dieselgate scandal. That makes it incredibly important, but is it a good car? Yes, we reckon it is.
Read our review of the Volkswagen ID.3 here.
3. McLaren 765LT
McLaren 765LT
The 765LT sits atop McLaren’s “Super Series”, a role previously held by the 720S — a car described by absolutely zero people as “lacklustre”. However the famously forensic McLaren decided that there were a few milligrams here and there that could be trimmed from the 720S and a few more horsepower to be squeezed out of its 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8. The result is a car that weighs 80kg less and packs 45 more horsepower (Super Series cars are named for their number of horses), with engineering and aero changes to make it even faster round a track.
The result is a car that, in Will Dron’s opinion, “has amphetamines licked”. “Probably”.
Read our review of the McLaren 765LT here.
4. Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet
Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet
Speaking of fast cars, say hello to the newest version of the Porsche 911 Turbo S. It can reach 60mph in exactly the same time as the aforementioned McLaren 765LT, thanks to its twin-turbo, six-cylinder flat six, its hammer-like torque delivery and the grip offered by its non-optional four wheel drive. It can, if you’re in good and legal conditions, top out at 205mph, and is capable of behaving “like a toddler full of sugar”.
But what impressed Alex Goy the most was the fact that it is capable of all that while offering daily-driver levels of practicality. There’s a good amount of space under the bonnet and if you’re gentle with the accelerator, it can be perfectly polite around town. A true everyday supercar.
Read our review of the Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet here.
5. Honda Civic Type R
Honda Civic Type R
When it came to the midlife update of the Civic Type R, Honda’s engineers had the luxury of not having to make too many big overhauls. After the blip that was the FK2 model (the one that came out in 2015), the current model — the FK8, to those in the know — has been seen as Honda’s return to the top of the hot hatch segment. However, the brand has decided to go one step further. Because, why not?
That means that the things that made the Civic Type R great before — the 2.0-litre turbo engine, the precision of the steering, the general sense of fun — are still great, if not incrementally more so, says Kieran Ahuja, while its shortcomings have been addressed. Add in a new — and completely addictive — short throw gear change, and we’re onto a winner.
Read our review of the Honda Civic Type R here.
6. Polestar 2
Polestar 2
Building a car that takes on the Tesla Model 3 is no easy feat. The American brand is, after all, at the forefront of electric vehicle making and the most valuable car company in the world — with the most loyal following. Its entry-level model was even briefly the best-selling car in the UK.
However, take on Tesla is what Polestar set out to do with the Polestar 2. According to Will Dron, it has largely achieved that, thanks to its Greta Thunberg-friendly interior, “immense” infotainment system and the depth of its driving character.
Read our review of the Polestar 2 here.
7. Volvo XC40 Recharge P8
Volvo XC40 Recharge P8
“Fast” might not be the first adjective you reach for when you look at the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8. It looks like a safe, practical, comfortable and sensible family crossover. And Volvo’s first pure-electric production vehicle is all of those things: it’s got a sizeable 452 litres of boot capacity; it can travel 280 miles on a single charge; it recharges rapidly; it’s got world-beating crash safety and driver assists; and it has the same great infotainment system as the aforementioned Polestar 2, with a similarly serene, minimalistic interior.
However, it’s also fast. Very fast. Thanks to four-wheel drive from two powerful electric motors delivering 487 lb ft of torque, it can go from 0-60mph in under five seconds. It’s a car that has the capability to stick your head to the headrest, says Will Dron, but it doesn’t beg you to.
Read our review of the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 here.
8. Rolls-Royce Ghost
Rolls Royce Ghost
The Rolls-Royce Ghost has adopted a new ethos in its latest iteration, one that its creator has labelled “post-opulent”. The car maker’s well-to-do clientele are reportedly no longer interested in the glitz and glamour that it previously embodied, and are now after a more sophisticated, minimalistic way of showing off their incredible wealth.
This posed something of a quandary to the designers and engineers over in Goodwood — their task was to make a car that was not as immediately dazzling as its predecessor but still justifies a price tag of at least £208,000; to make the Ghost as exciting as the outgoing model without making it gaudy. Engineers also had to improve on a car that has been praised as the best to drive among Rolls’ entire line-up. Will Dron was among the first in the world to find out how successful they were

Motor News: 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show
Electric cars have quickly gone from a distant future idea to dominating today’s headlines. As seen at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show.
With its first public showing, the all-electric Porsche Taycan sedan took a starring role at Frankfurt. It an EV rocket with up to 750-horsepower.
Porsche held on to the spotlight with the 911 Carrera 4 Coupe and 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. As for their SUV’s, three new hybrid models join the Cayenne series,…and the Macan Turbo took a bow.
Mercedes-Benz got our attention with the dramatic Vision EQS concept, showing how the electrified EQ sub-brand might evolve.
Along with expanding their small plug-in hybrid offerings, the brand showed extra fastback style in the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, and more potent 435 hp Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe. The AMG treatment is also due for their newest small SUV… as the Mercedes-AMG GLB35 4MATIC.
We’re told this sleek but polerizing BMW Concept 4 Coupe is very close to the next 4 Series design. An updated BMW X6 also had its first public outing… 12 years after being introduced in Frankfurt.
Volkswagen unveiled their first fully electric production model on the MEB architecture… this compact ID.3 sedan. Destined for Europe, the U.S. will see a similar sized ID.4 crossover.
This wild and wacky Audi AI:TRAIL quattro concept takes EV driving off-road, with up to level 4 autonomous technology on-road. Meanwhile, the alluring Audi RS 7 Sportback arrives with a 591-hp mild-hybrid V8.
Lamborghini revealed their first hybrid super sports car… the 819 horsepower Sián FKP 37. Using a supercapacitor it claims 0-60 takes less than 3 seconds.
The new Land Rover Defender made a dramatic entrance descending a 42-degree incline. And, it’s due to descend back to America too.
Asian brands also made EV news at Frankfurt. The production Honda e concept arrived. Looking much like the cute concept of 2 years ago…with an estimated 136-mile range.
Hyundai’s view includes plugging in with the EV Concept 45…. and their first electric racing car… the Veloster N ETCR.
Chinese upstart Byton brought their first production model… the M-Byte electric SUV. Inside is a 48-inch video display.
At Frankfurt 2019, our electric future was clearly on the fast track. And, that’s it for this week’s Motor News.

Sunday, 30 June. Stopping by to discover unbelievable concept cars, side by side with the most beautiful classic cars in existence, a large number of Richard Mille partners were on hand to share this singular moment with the brand: Chantilly Arts & Élegance RICHARD MILLE 2019.
CHANTILLY ARTS & ÉLÉGANCE RICHARD MILLE 2019
The inaugural event on Saturday was the supercar rally, which, all morning, transformed the Mortefontaine track into a giant playground for the world’s most exceptional automobiles, notably McLarens. Practicing Slaloms, braking and a speed bowl, participants were able to take full advantage of these racing machines. Among those present, skiing champion Alexis Pinturault made no secret of how much he enjoyed perfecting his trajectory and experiencing chills and thrills at the wheel of a 720S Spider. In parallel with this introduction to the track, a lunch at the Palais de Compiègne in the company of Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake concluded the Rallye des Collectionneurs, an opportunity for the public to admire some extremely rare cars, such as the McLaren P1 GTR and 720s, Ferrari’s LaFerrari, Enzo and 288 GTO models, the Porsche 918 and various Mercedes SLRs.
CHANTILLY ARTS & ÉLÉGANCE RICHARD MILLE 2019
Just prior to the traditional gala dinner at the Grandes Écuries de Chantilly, an architectural masterpiece from the 18th century, champion rider Jessica von Bredow-Werndl put on a sublime demonstration in dressage for the evening’s 500 guests. Attendees were then treated to exceptional dishes imagined by three chefs; Australian actress Margot Robbie proved especially receptive to this aspect of French art de vivre, as waiters and hostesses orchestrated this ephemeral embodiment of a multi-starred restaurant. ‘
CHANTILLY ARTS & ÉLÉGANCE RICHARD MILLE 2019
At 9 o’clock on Sunday 30 June, the Concours d’Elegance opened the day. On the lawns designed by Le Nôtre, visitors were invited to discover the greatest automotive masterpieces of all time and many other attractions, such a boat ride on the Grand Canal, a fairground, old-fashioned games and an unprecedented exhibition devoted to ‘The Nude Mona Lisa’ at the Musée Condé. Visitors also had a chance to attend the prestigious Bonhams auction. This edition was marked by a number of significant anniversaries: the centenary of Bentley and Ballot, the 100th anniversary of Bugatti, a 50th birthday for the iconic Porsche 917, 20 years of the Pagani Zonda and the 50th anniversary of Jackie Steward’s Formula 1 title with Matra.
CHANTILLY ARTS & ÉLÉGANCE RICHARD MILLE 2019
In attendance for the first time were Simon Pagenaud and Scott Dixon, both IndyCar champions and winners of the Indianapolis 500 in 2019 and 2008 respectively. The two were able to appreciate the full scope of this competition, which brings together 16 automotive brands, 40 clubs and 710 of the world’s most beautiful classic cars. The concept cars slated for the Concours d’Elegance were each paired with a fashion designer: the Aston Martin DB4-GT Zagato Continuation with Ronald Van der Kemp, the BMW Vision M Next with Talbot Runhof, Bugatti’s ‘Black Car’ with Max Mara, the DS X E-Tense and Eymeric François, the Honda E Prototype and Yohji Yamamoto, the Lexus Concept LC Cabriolet with Rochas, the McLaren Speedtail with Paule Ka, the Renault EZ-Ultimo with Guy Laroche and the Volkswagen ID Buggy with Ann Demeulemeester.
CHANTILLY ARTS & ÉLÉGANCE RICHARD MILLE 2019
The Richard Mille lounge played off the contrast between a futuristic vision and the Renaissance spirit of the event. Located close to the Airbus Corporate Jets and McLaren stands, guests congregated in a neo-Futurist décor from cinema’s most famous automobile: the DeLorean that featured in Back to the Future.

Design detail The wasserboxer featured a cast aluminium alloy cylinder block, cylinder heads, and pistons; and a die-forged steel flatplane crankshaft with three main bearings. The wasserboxer, as with all Volkswagen boxer engines, directly drives the three-bearing camshaft via a small steel gear on the crankshaft, and a large aluminium one on the camshaft, so there is no timing belt or timing chain. The entire mechanism is internal to the engine, so there should be no concerns regarding wear or replacements, as long as the engine oil is changed regularly. The overhead poppet valves each feature two concentric valve springs, and are operated by pushrods, with adjustable rocker arms to facilitate valve clearance adjustment. It also featured "Heron", or "bowl-in-piston" type combustion chambers - where the combustion takes place within the piston area, and not in a recess machined in the cylinder head. The cylinder banks contain cast iron cylinder liners inserted into the crankcase surrounded by a water jacket, with a "rubber lip" style head gasket, which is a very different design as compared to most engines. The top of the cylinder liners is pressed into a recessed cut-out in the cylinder heads, that are sealed with compressible metal rings, to prevent leakage. Some wasserboxers were plagued by water jacket gasket failures (often erroneously referred to as head gaskets) due to several design issues. Engine failure was also a result of poorly placed sensors, corrosion in the cooling system, and many areas subjected to leaks. This engine is representative of the fact that boxer four cylinders produce an audible low pitch "rumble", rather than a high pitch buzz/whine, when running. Some find this aspect of the engine to be pleasing, owing to the dislike[citation needed] of the "sewing machine" sound of inline-four engines. The switch to water-cooling for the boxer engines was made mid-year in 1982, because Volkswagen could no longer make the air-cooled engines meet emissions standards. (The previous generation Volkswagen Type 2 (T2), currently produced in Brazil, was changed to water-cooled engines since 23 December 2005 in response to Brazil's emission laws; the power plant used in the previous-generation T2 is an Audi-sourced inline four.) Water-cooled T2 models can be distinguished by a second radiator grille. Variants All data from ETKA.
