How BigQuery Analytics Hub streamlined internal data exchange for Virgin Media O2

Data sharing made simple is now a vital tool for any company looking to make well-informed decisions. Nevertheless, a lot of businesses still find it difficult to share data in an efficient and legal manner. Strong version control was necessary to guarantee that the data was always correct, consistent, and up to date because teams were already working on Google Cloud-based projects. However, this frequently prolonged the time it required to generate new insights. In order to meet their enterprise and AI needs, Virgin Media O2 already had their corporate data in BigQuery. After learning about BigQuery Analytics Hub‘s scalability, self-service capabilities, and straightforward governance mechanism for data tagging and quality, the data platform team made the decision to trial the product. This final aspect, in particular, was in line with enhancing the implementation of privacy by design.

Following a successful trial, Virgin Media O2 had developed a well-defined onboarding and training procedure. Two owners were assigned to each new data exchange, and two owners were assigned to the subscriber side to facilitate the tracking of any actions within BigQuery. This method was expanded to 25 teams, over 50 exchanges, 100 postings, 500 tables, and around 300 daily customers over the course of the following nine months.

The absence of data duplication in BigQuery Analytics Hub saves on network and storage expenses, which is one of the main advantages the team discovered. It accomplishes this by generating a shareable real-time pointer to the underlying dataset, referred to as a Linked Dataset. As a result, any subscriber can access updated data instantly and it’s simple to audit, trace, and restore the original data source. By using this method, a safety net for catastrophe recovery is also included.

The complexity issues associated with building views are also resolved by BigQuery Analytics Hub, notably the fact that permitted views frequently cause original table metadata to be lost when accessing data. All table descriptions and columns are still visible to subscribers who have direct access to the original dataset.

Virgin Media O2 was able to save time, lower latency, and improve management and usability for publishers and subscribers by connecting data directly from the data publisher to a data subscriber. Additionally, the platform’s enhanced governance offered a centralized location for managing data access and quality.

BigQuery Analytics Hub minimizes human labor and mistakes by streamlining the data sharing process between teams and business divisions. Within Virgin Media O2, the platform has been especially helpful to software developers, analytics engineers, data scientists, data engineers, and analysts. It guarantees that everyone has instant access to the data they require for their different jobs.

Using data that is more readily available than ever to save time

The solution helped save up to 30 hours a week on time spent on training, support, pipelines difficulties with deployment, and communication overhead from squads using the old approach after BigQuery Analytics Hub was rolled out to about 25 squads. Due to the nearly nonexistent problems, the weekly time spent by all teams is now as little as thirty minutes. According to the team, this results in an effort savings of about 95%. Data is now widely accessible to the various departments that require it, as it is no longer stored in silos.

Without requiring users to use BigQuery Analytics Hub directly, the team was able to democratize data access for subscribers and their larger teams by creating a dashboard. While retaining a robust governance approach, self-service is made possible by allowing users to subscribe to datasets. Cutting out the intermediary simplifies and expedites this tedious procedure while preserving a strong governance framework.

I don't know about the US, but for UK peeps I can advise the following - credit scoring is a myth.

Lenders have criteria to follow if they are going to lend you money, and you either fit that criteria or you don't. A credit score was something invented by the Credit Reference Agencies (Experian etc) to make things look pretty and for people to pay to keep track of their score.

I used to work for a CRA and I have seen people bankrupt that have "perfect" scores, and those that are solvent having bad scores. It is solely down to the lender if they will accept you or not.

For those in the UK, make sure you're registered on the Electoral Roll, you will probably always get declined for credit if you're not (and you can opt out of them selling your details, or full details appearing if you wish to). Sky/Virginmedia TV is credit, so if you're struggling to pay your TV bills (understandable in this current climate) then speak to them and they'll help you.

If you're young and don't have a credit score, if you can get a mobile phone contract, that's a good thing as that's also credit and you can get one of those credit-building credit cards - put fuel in your car, or buy shopping, use it for Amazon purchases - but (and this is important) MAKE SURE YOU PAY IT OFF IN FULL AND ON TIME EVERY MONTH, otherwise the interest is horrendous.

Don't do too many searches for credit either as that can make lenders nervous, thinking you're over-extending yourself. A 'soft search' is on that will not appear on your credit score.

Also address blacklisting does not happen. You will not be denied credit because of where you live!

Also, if you are separating from a partner and you have joint loans/mortgages etc, ensure you let the CRA's know - especially if one of you has bad debt - they can ensure that you have been disassociated from them (there is a proper term for it, but I can't remember what it is right now).

Now the US and UK are toatlly different countries wrt the population distribution and the history of Internet and TV delivery. The areas away from the large cities can be remote and sparcly populated. It is these rural areas where 5G FWA is growing.

What lessons does this send to the UK? One obvious lesson is that is we invest in 5G over as much of the UK as we can then in the rural areas this can be used for the Internet meaning we do not have to attempt to provide fibre to rural homes (at a great cost) and also this 5G in rural areas will ensure that they are not cut off from the telephone networks.

For urban areas it is a different issue, Openreach, VirginMedia, and other operators are busy installing fibre along our streets - often with arguments regarding poles. FWA can provide ar different connection, with less (I would hope) controversy re poles). 5G FWA on street furniture will get increase 5G connectivity in the suburbs and for those currently without fibre provide as good a connection as fibre for most of us without a mega Internet demand.

Just a note on my connection speeds, Openreach fibre to the home has a speed check of 100Mbps and the router using Three 4G is at 46Mbps. Slower 4G but 5G then that could easily match the fibre speed.

Another inspiring and educational road trip. To be honest I'm not into music at all and really rarely understand the music industry today but our visit to Virgin EMI with general manager Robert Pascoe felt like his life lesson could be used in any career path.

Hi Mum/Dad Texts: where the text proports to come from an offspring who has lost their phone and eventually the parent is asked to send money to the child - but it is not the child but a fraud.

Fake Delivery Texts: which proport to come from the Royal Mail or EVRI or any delivery company that ask for money, maybe only a small amount. But once the account details are in the hands of the fraudster the account will be stripped.

Large Transactions: the text gives details of a large amount with a link if it is not you that made the purchase. If you click then the fraudster will drain your account.

Asks you to invest in Crypto: or indeed any other scam, with the promise of high returns. Again you will never see your investment again.

Write off debts: again give the fraudster details then any money you have will disappear.
