There's something about this that just feels so Bruce. Just the way he could identify the components of her "secret" perfume and let her believe that she was still the only one who knew. Batman will know your secrets and he'll let you know that he knows, but Bruce… I think this is the first time that the comics have managed to convince me that there was something there between Bruce and Vesper, that it made me think that they could've been something more.

Batman (internal monologue): Strange that the thing I remember most about her isn't her face, or her voice… but it's the way she felt… how comfortable she was, leaning against me… the smell of her hair and her "secret" perfume. She wanted it to be her own private scent… a mix of Quintana Valore and Chanel no. 5. I never told her that I knew.

Why does Creon dislike Ash?

they're a little a lot upset about how much more significant Ash is in Mcs life. They believe that compared to Ash, they're nothing more than a chapter, while Ash is mcs future, and they hate them for it

I love how inconsistent Batman canon is. Like. It’s canon that Bruce shows up to work every single day bright and early in the morning. It’s also canon that Bruce hasn’t been in his office in over a year and the workers there barely recognize him. Like. How involved is Bruce in his office life? No idea! Pick what you think makes the best story!

oh noooooooooo I'm neutral on that too! I think a lot of the canon stuff is boring, but some of it is compelling. and then I don't see a lot of it in fandom but when I do see it tends to be a little bit interesting. unfortunately I think a lot of what makes her interesting as a characters requires her to not be dating Bruce - being at odds with him gives her a lot more complexity.

so ok instead of neutral we'll let these two be in the the boring category, with the caveat that people can convince me if they work hard enough to explain it

i love greg rucka's deconstruction of the batman family.

i love that alfred is honest with sasha and that rucka as a writer is honest with his audience in addressing the fact that bruce wayne, in this era, IS a manipulative freak.

alfred can't even dress it up in a nicety or detract from bruce's agency when he says this. and sasha's loyalty to bruce, like dick's, is shown as destructive. similarly to helena bertinelli / huntress' desire to impress him and earn her way into his confidence, to jason fearing his identity of robin being ripped away during the downward spiral that led to his death, to cassandra cain's only identity centering on bruce. this is to say nothing of azrael. i think barbara and tim are, ironically, the healthiest of the family in their relationship to bruce, and they are the two who most suspect that he did kill vesper fairchild.

it's like rucka looked at all of the horrible writing of the dixon era and asked, "how do i, someone with actual emotional intelligence, think dynamics like these would play out in the characters' minds." which is what writers usually do but you see, for 15 years batman was held hostage by the devil, and he was only exorcised from dc comics in 2002 or so.

Oh my god, Gotham Knights #26. I’m screaming, crying, throwing up.

Just this. This is so damn crunchy. It’s a reminder that the core of the post-Crisis Batfamily revolves around the dynamics and dance of tensions between Dick, Babs and Tim, and how each of them relate to Bruce.

Dick’s on the upswing of his relationship with Bruce, after the adoption and the two of them hammering a bunch of issues out.

Tim’s at a low point where he’s been frozen out and deliberately hurt. Bruce revealed his identity to Steph! Plus Alfred, who’s been staying with him to punish Bruce, had just announced he’s going back to the manor, leaving Tim even more alone.

Babs is in one of her “I’m here for the rest of you; Bruce is aggravating me by being high handed again” phases (admittedly that’s…her default position unlike the other two).

And wow does the way the three of them negotiate the debate over “did Bruce kill someone” just show off both their best and worst character traits (and also they’re all acting way more adult than Bruce, which isn’t a surprise, but what can you do).

Tim and Dick talk! Tim worries Dick is a jumper! They find out they have different opinions on Did Bruce Do It!

(I just want to EAT UP the implication that Tim is worried that Dick might be about to attempt suicide over the fact Bruce killed someone, especially just after the whole ‘killing Joker’ situation)

Dick is Extremely Offended Tim might think Bruce Did It. So what does he do? Go off to talk it through with Babs.

Babs gives Dick the reality check that Bruce has been in one of his push-everyone-away loner modes again and that Dick off in Blüdhaven isn’t having to face it personally, but Batman isn’t even patrolling with Robin right now. Also that Tim’s experiences with Bruce are necessarily different to Dick’s.

When suddenly… Tim arrives to ALSO thrash this conversation out with Babs (They are such mirrors of each other I swear).

Dick takes the opportunity to try and touch base with Tim and find common ground, leading to one of the best/most devastating pages of the Dick & Tim relationship at this point.

Dick is trying to make his baby brother feel safe. Dick would do anything for Tim. Tim however is all too aware of how hollow this promise is, as well meaning as the sentiment is, because they’ve lost people before. (And as I noted, Dick’s actually still in a GOOD cycle with Bruce while Tim really isn’t)

Which leads to THIS angst.

Tim believes in Dick. He can get by just trusting in the detective work he’s been taught and knowing that Dick holds to the Code (and we are LITERALLY only 3 months real time on since Last Laugh, Tim you have phenomenal levels of belief in Dick). Dick however, has that same level of trust in BRUCE, and so can’t cope with Tim not also feeling that way.

(And then Dick goes off to cry to Alfred because he also needed reassurance)

God I love all three of them so much it’s hard to describe. They’re so functional together even when they’re fighting as they all, at their core, trust each other implicitly.

(Alfred and Leslie have some very meaty conversations together and apart also in this, when Gotham Knights was on its game it was one of the best Bat books out there)

Finally: Babs is not having a great time here either, as she’s having to coordinate and run the investigation on Vesper Fairchild’s murder without any assistance from the primary suspect.

Theyre a Leo😏

Mc looks a lot like their Father but they have their Mothers eyes

When they were fourteen, they managed to sprain their ankle the night before the reaping when they were out with Ash, and it never properly healed

After Ash died Mc spent a lot of nights on top of the belltower in the middle of District 8 instead of their normal spot because it hurt too much to be there without Ash

Mc has top marks in all of their classes☝️

Theres a little cat bed for Hope in their closet but Hope normally just sleeps in Mcs bed

Mc is an enneagram type 4(yes, i did just retake the test for every character, including some of the other tributes. I've got brainrot for my own game, leaving me alone🙄)

Mcs tribute token is a bracelet from their Father (...it may or may be a lily of the valley bracelet)

Mc and their Mother actually used to be pretty close, but when they were about nine, something changed, and they grew distant

the first time Mc went back to the Capitol since Ashs death they were very shocked to find that they somehow have fans

Mc met Snow once, but it was before he was president and incredibly brief

This is less of a detail, but Mc was about 4 when Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes happened, and it absolutely blows my mind

You can pick Mcs' weapon of choice, but i will say they are a natural with a knife, and its kinda scary☝️(a certian district partner finds it attractive, tho😏)

When they were younger, Mc was for sure the kid that always tried to hang out with the adults anytime they were supposed to be playing with other kids

Regardless of whether or not you romance Creon Mc will always keep any letters they've gotten from them

Calliope has a hundred percent found the stash of letters and read through them (mc caught her, and it ended with mc having a black eye, and Calliope got a busted lip)

Mc is naturally a very caring person, but you get to decide whether or not the fully show it

i have no idea why but Mc will forever feel like the moon to me

they cannonically have a gorgeous smile (not sorry about it😋)

Mc also fully believes nobody ever really listens to what they're saying, but it is quite literally the exact opposite. they've just got this energy where you feel compelled to listen to them (they get it from their dad🤞)

you get to pick Mcs main hobby but they also know how to play the paino. it was something their mother taught them when they were young

when mc was ten, they "ran away" but came back a couple hours later because it started to snow, and they literally didn't have a coat. They thought nobody in their family noticed, but Soren had a full force of peacekeepers looking for them while Ione went out herself to look for them. When everyone was back home, they all acted like nothing happened.

Mcs room has one of the best views in the entire District

not a detail, but i know that Sejanus and Mc would've been besties, and nobody can convince me otherwise
