Car Air Conditioning Repairs Greater North Shore Has to Offer
If you're looking for the best Car Air conditioning repairs Greater North Shore has to offer, look no further. We have a team of certified technicians that specialize in car A/C system repair and maintenance, engine service and oil change service, and more! Our team is committed to providing superior service and care to our customers in Mount Vernon, NY and surrounding areas. Our certified mechanics take a customer-centered approach to every repair or service we perform, and we strive to be available to answer your questions as quickly as possible!
How Long Does a Car A/C System Last Before It Needs Repairs?
The average car A/C compressor can last up to eight years before needing repair. However, weather and frequency of use can shorten that timeframe.
Heat can cause corrosion inside a car's A/C system and wear out components more quickly than expected. This can result in the need for a complete replacement of all parts, especially if your vehicle is constantly exposed to extreme temperatures.
Signs that Your Car A/C Needs Repair
The first sign of an air conditioner problem is a decrease in cooling power. This may indicate a shortage of refrigerant, which is required for the unit to run efficiently. Your mechanic can check your refrigerant levels and determine if there's a blockage or a leak that needs to be repaired.
Another sign that your car's A/C is in need of repair is a loss of cold air from the vents. This could be a sign of a Freon leak or low refrigerant levels.
A technician can replace a refrigerant tank to restore the amount of refrigerant in your vehicle's A/C system and make it work properly again. Refrigerant leaks can be dangerous and lead to serious health issues, so you want to schedule an appointment with a Hialeah A/C repair shop as soon as you notice any signs of a Freon leak.
Foul smells coming from your A/C are a sign that it isn't working as efficiently as it should be. This is often caused by a clogged cabin air filter or mildew growing in the evaporator core, which is located just behind your dashboard.
Other typical car A/C problems include a loss of cold air from the vents, unusual smells, and a failure to blow cool air at all. These problems are a good indication that your car A/C needs a repair, so you should take advantage of our free A/C performance checks!
Get a Free Car A/C Check Today
Most auto repair shops across the country offer free A/C performance checks. These are a great way to stay ahead of potential A/C problems and budget for future car A/C repairs. Many of these offers will also cover any necessary engine service or other major repairs. If you're not sure where to look, you can try a simple Internet search for "free AC check in (your city)" to find one near you.

3 DAYS LAKE MANYARA AND NGORONGORO SAFARI OVERVIEW.
Three of Tanzania's most famous national parks in three days You'll begin with a visit to Tarangire National Park, home to large herds of elephants and towering baobab trees Then drive to the Ngorongoro crater, a real animal paradise where it is possible to see the Big Five” in one day Finally, Lake Manyara National Park awaits with its climbing lions and over 400 different species of birds Includes service. According to the camping safari itinerary Transport by 4x4 safari vehicle Professional English-speaking guide English-speaking professional safari leader stay in the tent Camping equipment (tents, mats, tables, chairs, etc.) Meals as per itinerary drinking water, tea, coffee All national park fees BEST TIME TO VISIT LAKE MANYARA                                                                  In summer (November to April), you can see flamingos and wildebeest, zebras and other migratory birds grazing on the shores of the lake Keep in mind that Lake Manyara has rainy summers and cool nights. So prepare your packing list for your Tanzania safari, pack the right safari gear and an umbrella, and plan your visit carefully The roads can be flooded during the rainy season, so it is best to visit the lake or explore it by canoe during the rainy season. 3 DAYS LAKE MANYARA SEASONAL WEATHER The Lake Manyara region enjoys moderate temperatures throughout the year. On warm, windy days, nights are cool as cold air descends from the skies over Crater Lake Valley. Warm coats and pants are also popular in the summer Driest months: September to July The worst months: November to April Hottest months: (300°C / 860F) January to March Coldest months: (250 C / 770 F) June to July Lake Manyara is the best time to see flamingos and other bird species. The best time to see migratory birds in Tanzania is summer, which lasts from November to April Its migration begins in November and lasts until April in the rainy season The flamingos generally inhabit the shallow waters around the lake, at different distances from the road depending on the water level of the year. 3 DAYS LAKE MANYARA BEST TIME OF YEAR FOR WILDLIFE VIEWING                                             Animal sightings occur throughout the year, but are most common between June and October, when the lake level drops, grazing activity is at its peak, and the north side of the park fills up now quickly. March and April are the best months to observe the wildebeest and zebra migration In Tarangire National Park Tarangire National Park is known as an excellent bird watching destination and is home to abundant wildlife, especially during the dry season when the Tarangire River is the only source of water for the area The landscape here is particularly interesting due to the many picturesque baobab trees
WHY VISIT Go on a walking he safari and marvel at the ancient baobab trees Discover hundreds of ancient cave paintings near Koro Tarangire is famous for its herds of up to 300 elephants An often overlooked gem framed by the thick branches of sturdy baobab trees, Tarangire's distinctive skyline provides an ideal backdrop for watching the game, especially during the prime winter months Wetlands that dry to green grasslands during the dry season attract grassland animals such as elephants, buffalo and antelope Lions and other predators are frequently sighted The park is home to over 500 species of birds, some of which are endemic to Tanzania At the south end of the park, away from the bustling north, there is a camp dedicated to walking safaris, where guests can enjoy a multi-sensory experience exploring the African bush on foot. Perfect to go to Tarangire time Tarangire is beautiful in both wet and dry seasons and is a great park for spotting wildlife all year round. Between August and October, when wildlife is at its most abundant, the park offers particularly good conditions for wildlife viewing Park highlights diverse wildlife Tarangire is home to all of Tanzania's most famous animals, with the exception of the endangered black rhinoceros From tiny dik diks to towering African elephants and giraffes, visitors come from all over the world In addition to these popular animals, the park is home to his three endangered species, which are found nowhere else in the country A fringe-eared oryx with graceful antlers towering over giant kudus and tiny starlings. Tanzania's largest elephant population Tarangire is famous for having the largest elephant population in Tanzania During the dry season, herds of up to 300 elephants can be seen in Tangier's seemingly dried-up riverbeds searching for underground streams. Thanks to their abundance, elephants are often seen even during the rainy season, when other park residents roam freely in his 20,000-square-kilometer park Migration MIGRATION takes place in Tarangire National Park from June to November each year It's not as spectacular as the legendary wildebeest migration in the Serengeti, but it's still an impressive sight When other water sources dried up, the Tarangire River became the park's only source of water, attracting herds of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and wildebeest, as well as lions, leopards, and other predators Tarangire, on the other hand, offers fascinating wildlife viewing Large herds of moving animals are easy to spot thanks to the dry terrain. ABOUT GORONGORO The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is located in northern Tanzania It is home to the massive Ngorongoro Crater and the "Big Five" species (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhinoceros) Huge herds of wildebeests and zebras cross the grasslands in one migration per year. Semi-nomadic Maasai cattle graze alongside wild animals Million-year-old hominid fossils found in Olduvai Gorge
WEATHER Ngorongoro CA has a mild and temperate climate In this region he has two rainy seasons A "short" rain from October to November is followed by a "long" rain from March to May Precipitation is generally felt in the form of short showers Best time to visit Ngorongoro When vacationing in Tanzania, your trip will likely be a safari, a beach visit, or both In general, the best time to go on a safari in Tanzania is from July to October It is the dry season and the weather is sunny As the park dries, the bush becomes less dense, making it easier to spot animals, but they are forced to congregate at the remaining water holes Short rains (occasional in December, January and March) That doesn't mean that December, January and February aren't still the best times to travel to Tanzania Ngorongoro is truly a year-round destination The area is about 20km x 20km and is surrounded by a beautiful and dramatic crater rim, so the animals are still there The high season of July and August is very crowded, and the number of tourists decreases during the rainy season However, Crater is so good that I can honestly say it's always packed, but don't let that stop you from checking the list: it's 10 degrees colder Rainfall generally resembles the typical November short rains, with short January, less frequent February, and longer rains in March, April and May As previously mentioned, the crater is a phenomenal site for annual safari word 732

B.C. South Coast residents urged to stay home after heavy snow chokes roads, cancels flights and ferries
Authorities across B.C.'s south coast have urged residents to stay home on Tuesday after a rare, major snowfall choked virtually every avenue of transportation, from grounded flights at the airport to jammed traffic on the roads.
Heaps of blowing snow and unusually frigid temperatures swept the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island overnight and through the morning, leaving up to 30 centimeters of fresh powder in some elevated residential areas.
The weather led to "mass cancellations" at Vancouver International Airport (YVR), with all flights suspended so far Tuesday during the airport's busiest week of the year.
Terminals were filled with exhausted, frustrated passengers clamoring for customer service desks or sleeping on the floor with coats as makeshift pillows. One man rested his head on the baggage carousel, surrounded by a sea of luggage left unclaimed in the confusion.
Several departing planes full of passengers were left sitting on the frozen tarmac overnight, unable to return to the gate to let travelers deplane.
"People were throwing up; people were yelling for a doctor or nurse because they were having panic attacks; there was a cat in there walking around, and I think it used the bathroom as well," said Jessica Campbell, who was stuck at the gate on her Toronto-bound flight for 12 hours.
"It was just a really traumatic, horrific scene in there." Travelers have been asked to check their flight status before leaving home and avoid the airport unless absolutely necessary.
As for travel by sea, a spokesperson said B.C. Ferries operate between the Mainland, Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, and the southern Gulf Islands because of poor visibility and difficulty reaching ferry terminals. Police in Abbotsford, east of Vancouver, reported whiteout conditions on Highway 1.
"This might be the biggest snowfall since 2008 for much of the South Coast, particularly Victoria," CBC meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe said from Metro Vancouver's snowed-in North Shore.
"We just have this big Arctic air mass in place, so any system that moves in from the Pacific is going to fall as snow, and that's exactly what happened."
Environment Canada has weather warnings in effect for virtually all of B.C., forecasting blowing snow, extreme cold, or Arctic outflow conditions.
According to the agency, the severe cold will last even after the snow melts on Tuesday. "We do want to advise that after the system moves through, the Arctic [air] will really settle in over the region," said Environment Canada meteorologist Jonathan Bau, referring to the South Coast.
"So we are forecasting near, if not at, record-breaking lows for tonight and Wednesday night." The University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and the University of the Fraser Valley all canceled in-person exams on Tuesday.
The province said drivers in the Lower Mainland "are advised to stay off the road unless their vehicle is properly equipped with winter tires."
For those with winter tires who must drive, a statement Monday said drivers should pack an emergency kit in their vehicles. Elsewhere around B.C., the ongoing deep freeze produced several daily minimum temperature records Monday, including a low of –46.8 C west of Williams Lake, while the Quesnel area broke a record set 78 years ago when it reached a low of –37.5 C.

Wandering Hops: The Urban Runner
Tumblr media
San Francisco, the city by the bay. This sprawling metropolis is purported to have it all, fine dining, upscale hotels, one of a kind experiences, history, and tourist traps aplenty.
But what about hiking? Can you even hike through an urban landscape, and find something that’s challenging, enjoyable, and memorable?
That was the question rattling around in my mind as I descended upon Oakland last week, wondering how I was going to get a Wandering Hops in, while I visited with my family here.
For most of the week, I’d be relegated to Mass Transit. Without a vehicle, my options narrowed as to where I could go, if not as a matter of access, then the time it might take to go anywhere. Even the local gym franchise proved to be a forty five minute bus ride away.
To be certain, anything not within walking distance was going to prove a logistical challenge.
Tumblr media
Starting my research the evening of my arrival, I found many offerings at the periphery. Oakland’s Redwood Park, and Marin both boasted hikes that looked challenging and interesting, but were also far afield, with transit times one way peaking towards the two hour mark, which would reduce my options.
Everything had to be planned around a transit schedule, but out of this challenge, I got an idea. What if I turned this on its head? Was it possible to find a hike in San Francisco proper that would offer distance, challenge, and beautiful scenery, all while proving easy to get to, right off the Bay Area Rapid Transit System (The BART).
Narrowing my search,  I came across the Golden Gate Park, Lands End, Presidio Loop. Clocking in at eleven miles, it came with an option to extend the hike by at least three if I hiked across the Golden Gate Bridge.
Bingo.
Tumblr media
Starting off from Golden Gate Park, I ventured north, determined to get as much of the road walking portion of the hike out of the way, only to be pleasantly surprised when I found a wide green space welcoming me, framed in by trees, providing a forested, and direct path for me to follow as I ventured towards Presidio Park.
The experience proved interesting. The roar of traffic was present on either side of me, but otherwise I was alone, moving through what felt like a forest only to pop out every block or so, and have to cross at a crosswalk to avoid being flattened. It punctuated the hike with a strange staccato, and well illustrated the nature of this hike as a mixed experience early on, for though it felt like I was in the wilds, the city was just beyond my green bubble, ever waiting for me.
Tumblr media
That experience was not to last though, as I crossed into the wide expanse of Presidio Park. The location was once a military base and an important pacific fortification for the US Military, and at one time, Spain. It was established in 1776, the very same year that America declared independence from England. The fort maintained a military presence within San Francisco until 1994, ending its 219 years as a fortification. At that time, its sprawling 1,500 acres were deeded to the National Park Service, and remains in its possession to this day. (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidio_of_San_Francisco)
As a result of its military history, it is full of parade grounds, and is not as densely packed as the rest of the city. Moving up a steep incline, I soon found myself in a well kept parkland. The noises of traffic, so prevalent not fifteen minutes before, fell away. Here people walked dogs, and jogged along, past historical markers and fitness placards, while birds sang and squirrels jostled for bits of food left upon the ground by picnickers.
Diverting past a golf course filled with Lexus, BMW and Porsche a plenty, the trail veered and the population dived as a shaded wood welcomed me. Gaining elevation, quiet surrounded me, save for the pacific wind that blew through the trees granting a cool tinge to the noon time air, all while the Golden Gate Bridge began to peek through the wooded copse.
Tumblr media
So far, this hike had been full of surprises, and as I stood overlooking the national cemetery, with a stunning view of the Golden Gate Bridge, I could not help but feel that I had found a type of hidden treasure nestled within the city.
Tumblr media
Following the trail, it led me out of the woods, back to sidewalk, and eventually asphalt as I navigated the old military base. Winding ever north, the spires of the Golden Gate became more and more dominant as I moved deeper into the old military base, finally passing a large parade ground set before four identical barracks in a spanish architectural style. It was a curious mash up of architectural beauty and picture perfect reproduction that made them seem both original and mass produced at the same time providing a jarring effect as I followed signs for the coastal trail.
Tumblr media
Arriving at Golden Gate plaza, I stopped for lunch and  looked towards the bridge, considering  my options. Tourists dominated the area, crowding almost every free space, as they milled about from shops, to path, to photo opportunity. Rented bikes whizzed by, with hardly a care for any pedestrians around them, who seemed equally oblivious as they wandered about.
What struck me as interesting was the number of languages I heard, Chinese, Korean, Dutch, English, and others I could not readily identify. While it was a chaotic morass, this area was still a global meeting of various cultures all gathered together to experience a particular American landmark that always ends up destroyed in any blockbuster action movies.
Considering it now, I suppose in that moment I had become a tourist too, because I was about to undertake the same journey, adding a little over three miles to my hike, and walk the bridge.
Tumblr media
This sounds like a romantic notion. As stated, the Golden Gate is famous, bringing in visitors from around the world to see its iconic red spires. It is the symbol of San Francisco, dominating logos, souvenirs, paintings and films. However, the fact that it is such a venerable symbol does not take away from the fact that it is also a critical traffic artery, and a busy tourist destination.
In short, I had entered into utter chaos and noise. People pressed in around me in a manner that I would associate more with New York City than the bay area, as traffic roared by at highway speeds.  Bicyclists continually zoomed by, ringing their bells, giving you only moments to push yourself up against the side, but I wasn’t about to turn around.
Tumblr media
As I wrote last week, perseverance pays, and I had come to hike that damn bridge.
Ushered on by winds, and a prevailing sense of mild panic being surrounded by so many people, the views only got better as I made my way across. There, over an expanse of bright blue water lay Alcatraz, and to my other side was the vastness of the Pacific Ocean. Massive container ships trailed out before my vision, ferrying their goods back and forth, as sail boats raced by distracting me from the chaos that was around me.
Some experiences, some views, make the chaos worth it.
Tumblr media
Hooray for type two fun.
A curious rhythm to the hike became apparent as I ventured on, past my halfway point. After another section along a busy road, I again found myself in a forest. This time, clinging to high rocky hills that overlooked the ocean. Waves rolled in as the container ships continued their endless procession in the distance, as the hike again grew more and more wild only for it to dump me suddenly, back into a neighborhood, back into the city, before dropping me off onto the beach.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here among decaying and abandoned bunkers, and cannon emplacements, kites flew, and people luxuriated in the sun enjoying cool seventy degree temperatures, a marked, and beautiful contrast to the sweltering heat wave that was punishing much of the rest of the country at the time. Reporting earlier on the fantastic weather conditions back to our cover artist in Connecticut, they sent a simple one word reply.
“Jealous.”
Tumblr media
Moving along the shore, past the ruins of the Sutro baths, I was once again on the sidewalk, this time happy for the experience, if for no other reason than that it was keeping sand out of my shoes. Two days after my hike, they still rattle when I put them on, as so much has worked itself between the goretex layers, I wonder if they will ever be free of the gritty material ever again.
Tumblr media
Finally, I ended up on the edge of the Golden Gate Park, the very same area I had started. Following a path, through the beautifully kept park, I soon found myself amongst the woods again, as the light of day began fading. As a result of backtracks and diversions, the hike had stretched long, ultimately coming in at 16.1 miles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oftentimes, hiking is seen as a purely rural, or remote activity, however this adventure showed it can be anything but. With a bit of planning and searching, I had found a hidden gem, full of history, stunning natural scenery and ample challenge. Best of all, it was just a short bus ride away in the heart of the City by the Bay.

Policing Memories of           Garry Crawford Circa 1962                          Part XII It was on June 14, 1971. I had just reported to the Superintendent at Sault Ste Marie D.H.Q., dropped off Sergeant Major Orville Waito and headed north on Highway #17 towards Wawa. If anyone has not travelled this section of Highway #17, it is one of the most beautiful scenic highways in Ontario. I remember my excitement growing as I travelled up past the Goulais River and when I first seen the majesty of Lake Superior. The immensity of the lake along with rugged shoreline and background of the mountains was breath taking. I drove by miles of beaches and I was amazed that I did not see a soul on them. The road constantly dips inland for a mile or two then you pop back out to another explosion of scenery at the Lake. Little did I realize that this beautiful country would be our home for the next nine wonderful years! I travelled by Harmony Bay, Batchewana Bay, Pancake Bay, Mamanse Harbour, Alona Bay and finally the Montreal River the half waypoint to Wawa. This was where I later learned the division point was between Sault Ste Marie and Wawa Detachments. At Montreal River the road goes up a steep incline for a mile and a quarter as you travel through an area of hill tops and lakes to Kenny Lake then the road drops down again to the Agawa Bay area where you follow along the great lake again, running inland past Doc Greig Lake, Red Rock until it finally pops back out again at Old Woman Bay. On reaching this point I had already crossed many large rivers. I would later memorize all the rivers and tick them off; in my mind, as I travelled north or south between Wawa and Sault Ste Marie. On crossing the Old Woman River the road took another steep incline and left the lake for a distance passing Baby and Fenton Lake, then over the Michipicoten River and finally the Wawa Detachment on the top of the hill It is on the service road just to the south of the town of Wawa. On reaching Wawa Detachment which is approximately two and a half hours north of Sault Ste Marie. I was greeted by the then Detachment Commander Patty Bingham. I became the third Corporal serving under Patty. The other two Corporals were Bill Duncan and Bill Freeth. Constables that immediately come to mind were Ray Negus, Ed Zelionis, Walter Purdy, Jeff Lamb, Joe Poderys, Spence Coutu, Tim Jones, Don Lewko, Carmen Foster, Tex Luoma, Tom Richber and Ray Rose. There were many others that I remember, however I believe they came later. I took a room at the Beaver Motel the first night and proceeded to orient myself to the Town of Wawa itself. The town of Wawa had their own municipal police force at that time. It was called the Michipicoten Township Police Force and the Chief was Scott McCrae. The Town is situated on a height of land between the Magpie River Valley and Wawa Lake, which lays east of the town for a distance of seven miles. Highway #101 runs from Highway #17 to the Town of Wawa, then east along the south shore of Wawa Lake to Chapleau and Timmins. The Wawa Golf Coarse lies in the Magpie River Valley to the West of the town and at elevation perhaps 200 feet lower. I remember that first night, driving out to the William Teddy Park; about a mile east of Wawa and just off Highway #101. The park was named after a native man who had first discovered gold in the creek that borders the park. I got out of my car and walked over to the shore where the picnic table had been that we used some three years earlier, where I had made a wish to be posted there. I don’t remember expressing that wish to anyone else other than my wife and sister and brother-in-law. However I was so thrilled that luck had brought me there. I looked back westerly at the town of Wawa itself and marveled at is beauty. Almost the whole length of the town has a sand beach at its edge. On reporting for duty the following day I learned, that the Detachment while not policing the town of Wawa at that time, had a very large area. To the east we covered out Highway #101 to the Sudbury Algoma district line, then into the town of Missanabie on the CNR. This patrol also included the mining hamlet of Renabie. This was a distance of approximately 85 miles from Wawa. We were required by agreement to patrol that area on each shift. The town of Hawk Junction is located about 12 miles out Highway #101 on the Algoma Central Railway. There seem to be a large number of occurrences that required our attendance in that area. Our area also went south on Hwy #17 to the Montreal River a distance of approximately 70 miles. To the North of Wawa we were responsible for 30 miles of Highway #17. Michipicoten Township police covered the land area that was included in their Municipal area for a distance of ten miles north of Wawa, our Detachment was responsible for all that other land area. We also initially had the town of Dubreuville. This was later made a one man Detachment. I should mention that following the appointment of the one man Detachment at Dubreuville, I was lucky again and assigned to supervise and monitor it. For the majority of my years at Wawa I had the pleasure of having Bob Pilon as the Constable posted there. Bob required very little supervising and at each visit I made, it was like visiting old friends, it was always a joy. On some occasions my wife made the trip with me and would visit Bob’s wife. One thing that stands out in my memory was the first week I was in Wawa, there were 11 moose motor vehicle collisions on our 30 mile stretch of the North Highway #17 alone. That was not counting those on Highway #101 and many more on the southern stretch of Highway #17. This I learned was quite normal for the area. I also learned that the dead moose provided a ready meat supply for many of the Constables and some of the Corporals. My boys use to tell me: You raised us on steak and weaned us on hamburger. They were not referring to beef steak. These types of accidents would continue all year but were especially bad in the spring of the year. There is some who say the moose congregate at the Highway because of salt used in the previous winter, and also that the flies chase the moose out of the bush to open areas. The fact is they sure like the highways. While the main work at Wawa was traffic enforcement and motor vehicle accidents, there was always a large number of break and enter and theft investigations, as the large wilderness area had very many tourist resorts and camps. We also had many lost person searches, drowning’s and accidental deaths to investigate. Wawa had three air services flying out of Wawa Lake. They were Airedale, White River Air and Watson’s. George Theriault flew out of Hawk Lake at Hawk Junction. I and many of the members of Wawa Detchment flew at one time or another with these services. Sometimes on investigations and sometimes for pleasure. The first month or two at Wawa I was busy obtaining accommodation, for my family and I, plus arranging for the necessary move from Warren to Wawa. We owned our house in Warren and at that time the force only paid for real estate fees. We were able to obtain the services of a real estate company from Sudbury, however they never did bring a customer or help with the sale. We finally succeeded in selling our home by advertising in the Sudbury Star. We found a home at 20 Superior Ave., in Wawa that had been moved down from the Renabie Mine town site, placed on a new basement and completely refinished. The only problem was the home would not be completed for another month. With the home in Warren sold, we arranged with a mover to move our furniture then store it until our new home was available. At that time we owned a Starcraft hardtop pop up trailer, so we moved it to the William Teddy Park on Highway #101. We moved into our trailer in July 1971, with our two boys age 8 and 10 years. My wife was just not quite sure of what I was getting her into. The house was still not completed when the mover finally came, but the builder agreed to let us use the two bedrooms to store all of our furniture while he completed the house. Looking back, it was a really good experience for us camping at William Teddy Park. As I write this article my wife and I have enjoyed a happy marriage for 60 years, however I must admit it takes a very special person to endure some of the things that happen to the spouse of an OPP member, especially during a northern posting. The first year or so at Wawa much of my time was taken up attending further training courses both in Brampton and Aylmer. The first being a Corporal Development Course, followed by a Criminal Investigation Course. During these courses my wife was left in Wawa adjusting to her new home. It was she who made our home a home and kept our family stong. The first winter in Wawa there was very heavy snowfall, if I remember correctly there was a total of 17 feet of snowfall. Highway #17 was closed many times. It was over a hundred and fifty miles to Sault Ste Marie, many of those miles ran close to the lake. Snow effect snow combined with the strong winds would cause complete whiteout conditions. So often when the roads were closed I would get a phone call, the person on the phone would inquire about the road conditions to the Soo. When I advised they were closed, they would argue with me as they wished to take the chance and go. I remember one day taking the family out for a snowmobile run. We stopped in a cleared area and I jumped off my machine, I sunk in the snow to a point where it was above my waist. I was happy the machine I was riding was close enough to me to assist my crawling back up and onto the snowmobile. I will continue this adventure in my next submission. But the isle of Islay, in the Inner Hebrides, is now being recognised for an almost forgotten example of huge courage and humanity.
A hundred years ago, Islay was on the frontline in the battle at sea during World War One.The island coped with mass casualties from two major troopship disasters just eight months apart.
Tumblr media
Between them, the sinkings of the SS Tuscania in February and HMS Otranto in October, claimed the lives of about 700 men in the last year of the war.
Both will be officially commemorated on Islay this week.
A century ago, the island was enduring considerable pain. It had already lost about 150 sons on the Western front, from a population of just 6,000. Every household grieved for someone killed in a far away field. And then the carnage of war came to them.
The Tuscania had almost completed its transatlantic voyage, carrying US troops, among a convoy of ships. As it turned into the north channel between Scotland and Ireland on 5 February 1918, danger lurked beneath the waves.
A German U-boat stalked the convoy, got the Tuscania in its sights and fired two torpedoes - one of which ripped a huge gash in its side. It was a fatal blow. The former luxury liner, converted for the war effort, would soon be on the seabed.
The Tuscania was carrying almost 2,500 US soldiers and British crew. Incredibly, most were rescued by the Royal Navy. But some of those who made it into lifeboats were not so lucky. They were swept towards the cliffs and rocks of Islay's Oa peninsula and shipwrecked for a second time.
Private Arthur Siplon was thrown into the sea when his lifeboat capsized.
"He thought he was going to die," his youngest son Bob told me.
"But at last he grabbed hold of a rock and when the sea receded he managed to hang on and climbed to the shore."
Private Siplon was rescued by one of two Islay farmers who risked their own lives pulling men to safety.

Robert Morrison and Duncan Campbell gave food and shelter to dozens of survivors and were later awarded the OBE.
Bob Siplon knows that he and his family would not exist if his father had not found help on Islay.
"It's like the actions of those people 100 years ago ripples through time to affect me 100 years later.
"It tells me that what we do makes a difference" he said.
This was a massive disaster for a small island to manage. In 1918, Islay had no electricity, no air service and few motor vehicles.

The funeral on Islay of 199 American soldiers who were victims of the Ontranto disaster
The civil authority on this almost crime-free island was a police sergeant on a bicycle, called Malcolm MacNeill. Sgt MacNeill and his three constables had to recover, identify and bury the remains of almost 200.
His grandson - former Nato secretary general, Lord Robertson - considers their task on a scale comparable with recent terrorist attacks.
"This is like Lockerbie (air disaster) or 7/7 or even 9/11 occurring in a small community.
"A huge event taking place with deaths, bodies, survivors - the calamity that was involved".
Despite their trauma, the islanders worked tirelessly to bury the dead with dignity.
They did not have an American flag for the funerals, so a small group of locals hand-stitched one from the materials they had - working late into the night.
That flag has been preserved by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, which is sending it home on loan to Islay for the centenary.
Tumblr media
The Smithsonian's Jennifer Jones is impressed by the care the islanders showed for the American soldiers washed up on their shores.
"It was very heartfelt, that people went out of their way to respect those who had recently lost their lives" she said.
Islanders pulled together to respond to the Tuscania sinking.
What they could not know is that this was only a preparation for a much bigger disaster to come.
Like the Tuscania, HMS Otranto was carrying US troops across the Atlantic in a convoy when disaster struck.
But it wasn't an act of war that sank the Otranto on 6 October 1918, within weeks of the armistice. It was a navigational error in a storm.
As the convoy approached the west coast of Scotland in near hurricane conditions, there was confusion over their exact position.
The Otranto was rammed by another ship in the convoy - HMS Kashmir - which ripped its steel hull wide open.
The Kashmir and the rest of the convoy sailed on, under orders not to give assistance for fear of U-boat attack.
Despite the ferocious weather, the Royal Navy destroyer, HMS Mounsey came to the rescue under the command of Lieutenant Francis Craven.
"In my viewpoint, Captain Craven was a real hero. Perhaps the real hero of the event" said Chuck Freedman, whose grandfather, Sam Levy, was on the Otranto.
Lieutenant Levy was among almost 600 soldiers who successfully jumped for their lives on to the deck of the Mounsey.

Funeral for the victims of the Ontranto at Kilchoman on Islay
Many others tried and failed and were crushed to death between the two ships. By the time the Mounsey left the scene there were still hundreds of men aboard the sinking Otranto.
Their best hope was to be swept towards one of the beaches on Islay's Atlantic coast. But that wasn't to be.
Tumblr media
The Otranto was lifted by a huge wave and dumped down onto a reef that broke its back and tore the ship to pieces.
Only 21 men made it ashore alive.
Some were pulled from the sea by members of Donald-James McPhee's family.
They were shepherds and used their crooks to reach survivors - the length of their staffs, the distance between life and death.
But this was largely a recovery operation with bodies piling up along the coast.
Tumblr media
"It must have been so sad for them to see that" said Mr McPhee.
"Waking up in the morning to a normal day's work and hundreds of dead bodies by the evening. It must have been horrendous."
Sergeant MacNeill painstakingly recorded the details of every body washed ashore, in a notebook which now has pride of place in the Museum of Islay life.
Many of the victims were from the US state of Georgia, which is planning its own commemorations later this year.
Some of the 700 victims of the Otranto and Tuscania disasters were never found.
The majority were buried on Islay.
After the war, the remains of the American soldiers were exhumed and returned home.
In 1918, the Tuscania disaster represented the biggest single loss of US military lives since the American civil war. The sinking of the Otranto accounted for some of America's heaviest losses at sea during the 1914-18 war. Yet the stories of these ships are not well known - lost perhaps in a century of Islay mist.
There is a large lighthouse-shaped memorial on Islay's bleak Mull of Oa.
Tumblr media
But when I was growing up on the island, the troopships were rarely talked about. That's changing. Today, every child at my old school - Bowmore primary - is learning about them.
On Friday 4 May, Princess Anne will lead commemorations on Islay to mark the centenary of these twin tragedies. These events will honour those who lost their lives and honour what the people of Islay did for those in peril on their shores a hundred years ago.

The best time to see migratory birds in Tanzania is summer, which lasts from November to April. Their migration begins in November and lasts until April in the rainy season. Flamingos typically live in the shallow waters around the lake and vary in distance from the road depending on the water level of the year. The best season for bird watching. Animal sightings occur year-round, but are most common between June and October when lake levels are low, grazing activity peaks, and the north side of the park fills up quickly. March and April are the best months to see wildebeest and zebra migration Tarangire National Park Tarangire National Park is known as an excellent bird watching destination and is home to abundant wildlife, especially during the dry season when the Tangier River is the only source of water for the area The landscape here is particularly interesting due to the many picturesque baobab trees,3 Days Lake Manyara
Why visit Tarangire Embark on a walking safari and marvel at ancient baobab trees. Discover hundreds of ancient cave paintings near Koro. Tangier is famous for its herds of up to 300 elephants. An often overlooked gem framed by the thick branches of sturdy baobab trees, Tarangire's distinctive skyline provides an ideal backdrop for watching the game, especially during the prime winter months. The wetlands, which dry into green grasslands during the dry season, attract grassland animals such as elephants, buffalo, and antelope. Lions and other predators are frequently sighted. The park is home to over 500 species of birds, some of which are endemic to Tanzania. At the southern end of the park, away from the bustling north, there is a camp dedicated to walking safaris, where guests can soak all their senses in the experience of exploring the African bush on foot  Perfect time for getting to Tarangire Tarangire is beautiful in both wet and dry seasons, making it a perfect year-round wildlife viewing park. Between August and October, when wildlife is at its most abundant, the park offers particularly good conditions for wildlife viewing. Park highlights diverse wildlife Tarangire is home to all of Tanzania's most famous animals, with the exception of the endangered black rhinoceros. From tiny dik diks to towering African elephants and giraffes, visitors come from all over the world. In addition to these popular animals, the park is home to three endangered species found nowhere else in the country. A fringe-eared oryx with graceful antlers towering above a giant kudu and a small ash starling. Tanzania's largest elephant population Tarangire is famous for having the largest elephant population in Tanzania. During the dry season, herds of up to 300 elephants can be seen searching underground rivers in Tarangire's apparently dried-up riverbeds. Thanks to their abundance, elephants are a common sight even during the rainy season when other park residents roam freely in his 20,000-square-kilometer park. Migration The migration takes place in Tangier National Park from June to November each year. It's not as spectacular as the legendary Serengeti wildebeest migration, but it's still an impressive sight. When other water sources dried up, the Tarangire River became the park's only source of water, attracting herds of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and wildebeest, as well as lions, leopards, and other predators. Tarangire, on the other hand, offers fascinating wildlife viewing. Large herds of moving animals are easy to spot thanks to the dry landscape. About Ngorongoro The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is located in northern Tanzania. It is home to the massive Ngorongoro Crater and the "Big Five" species (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhinoceros). Huge herds of wildebeest and zebras cross the grasslands on their annual migrations. Semi-nomadic Maasai livestock graze alongside wild animals. Hominid fossils dating back millions of years have been unearthed in Olduvai Gorge weather Ngorongoro CA has a mild and temperate climate. In this region he has two rainy seasons. A 'short' rain from October to November followed by a 'long' rain from March to May. Precipitation is generally felt in the form of short showers. Best time to travel in Ngorongoro. If you're vacationing in Tanzania, your trip will likely be for a safari, a beach visit, or both. In general, the best time for safari in Tanzania is he from July to October. It is the dry season and the weather is sunny. As the park dries up, the bushes become less dense, making it easier to spot animals, but they are forced to congregate at the remaining water holes. Short rains (sometimes seep in December, January and March) This does not mean that December, January and February are still not the best times to visit Tanzania.
