the same night that riot police, counter terrorism and SWAT violently arrested protestors at columbia and city college in nyc, LAPD stood by while zionist counter protesters violently attacked the UCLA encampment, injuring dozens of people
eyewitness account from a professor at UCLA. the forward is an independent liberal jewish publication.
UCLA, the top-rated public university in the United States, experienced one of the darkest nights in its 105-year history on Tuesday. Over the course of my 33-year career at UCLA, I have never seen anything so terrifying take place.
Around 11 p.m., a group of masked counter-demonstrators made their way to the Royce Quad in the heart of campus and began to attack the encampment set up last week by demonstrators opposing the war in Gaza. They threw a firecracker into the encampment, tore down its outer walls, threw heavy objects at demonstrators and instigated direct physical confrontations. Those in the encampment were left to fend for themselves against a violent band of thugs intent on inflicting damage.
The incident marked a total systems failure by the university, the city of Los Angeles and the state of California.
For three hours, the counter-demonstrators attacked the encampment with impunity. UCLA has its own trained police force, and the UCLA administrators with whom I spoke told me that the Los Angeles Police Department had been called to campus. But, somehow, there was no police presence whatsoever until the early hours of the morning.
What makes last night all the more inexplicable was that the university had, over the weekend, seen a haunting warning of what could happen.
#the forward basically posts things that range from liberal zionist to anti zionist jsyk#mine#campus protests

"It was exactly what you would imagine when you think about a student protest: radical in its conception and execution, and not shy about its belief that the world can be made better. The mood among the students was fiery but with an idealistic innocence at its core. That this was ultimately robbed from them is one of the great crimes of what followed."
...
While other student protests across the country had dealt with the substantial use of police violence, none had dealt with the sheer volume of angry Zionists that the students at UCLA would be forced to contend with. In just a few days, a GoFundMe page would raise tens of thousands of dollars from donors like Bill Ackman and Jessica Seinfeld (of the Seinfeld Seinfelds) and promptly establish an angry and well-funded counterpoint to the student encampment just across the lawn.
....
All at once, the students in the encampment began lining up and linking arms. They formed a dense ring around the encampment’s edge and turned inward, away from the raging counter protest.
Since this movement began, hand-wringing centrists have written a great deal about the right and wrong way to protest, with the implication always being that they believe these students have gone too far. I’ve seen no mention of this moment from those people, in which students responded to aggression with peace. When the counter-protestors attempted to heckle, they were ignored. As the Zionists screamed, the students sang.
...I hope that people remember a child joyfully kicking a soccer ball, insulated by a circle of those fighting for his future. I hope people remember the Passover seder held by Jewish students tired of seeing their peoples’ faith and struggle used to justify mass murder. I hope the students remember that for a little while, they won an impossible fight and did so in a way that forced their enemies to reveal the depths of their own cruelty in the days that followed.

Columbia crackdown led by university prof doubling as NYPD Intelligence & Counter-terrorism Bureau leader

2011 AP Report on Co-ordinated NYPD and CIA Domestic Spying, targeting Muslim communities
Aug. 24, 2011
Dartmouth Student Protest from May 1st
May 1st 2024
Statement from UCLA English Department opposing the university's response to violence
May 2nd 2024
[Text ID: Screenshot of text titled Statement of undersigned members of the UCLA Department of English Faculty in response to the forcible removal of the Student Encampment.
"As members of the Department of English, we write to condemn the response of UCLA to the student encampment in support of Palestine. The encampment on Royce Quad is right outside our faculty offices in Kaplan Hall and many of us witnessed the peaceful, disciplined, and morally courageous protests of the students since April 25, 2024.
On April 30, Chancellor Gene D. Block misrepresented the protests, calling their tactics "shocking and shameful," alluding to unspecified "instances of violence," and labeling the encampment "unauthorized." He called on law enforcement to secure the area, removed barriers, and threatened suspension and expulsion. At the same time, UCLA did nothing to address the violence the students were subjected to every night, even granting a permit right next to their encampment for a rally on April 28, with a jumbotron transmitting images of rape, children crying, and loud music every night and day to terrorize the students.
On the evening of April 30, a violent mob attacked UCLA students for several hours, while university leadership was nowhere to be found. Several of our faculty were present to witness the abandonment of the basic responsibility of the University to protect students from a raging mob. Security personnel and campus police watched the siege and did nothing. UCLA was widely mocked in the media for refusing to protect its students, and condemned by the Mayor of Los Angeles and the Governor of California, as we await the results of an external inquiry into the appalling incidents of the night. Not a single person has been held accountable, despite being captured on camera in the very act of violence.
Instead of going after the violent agitators, UCLA then turned on its own. Royce quad became a war zone, watched around the world as UCPD, CHP, LASD, SRT, and university-paid private security, armed with riot gear, hiding their badges and body cams, unleashed a crackdown on the encampment. Police used Kaplan Hall as their staging area, refusing entry to faculty trying to access their offices and asking us to leave. Setting hordes of police in riot gear on peaceful student and faculty protestors overnight fundamentally counters the very mission of our university. The massing of militarized police (snipers, flashbangs, tear gas, stun grenades, batons, zip-ties) is unforgivable.
These inexcusable actions - allowing mobs to attack students and faculty on April 30 and law enforcement to make brutal mass arrests of students and faculty on May 1 - make Gene Block unfit to fulfill his role. We call for the resignation of Chancellor Gene Block.
We also call for complete amnesty for all protestors. UCLA cannot call itself a public university if it does not protect our first amendment rights. As humanists, we have watched our students sing, write, speak, knit, play, dance, and pray with grace and love. They should be allowed to continue to do so. UCLA should be at the forefront of the national student movement against genocide and not turn our campus into a display of unchecked police brutality.

I didn't know that Penny Keaton baked pies and taught classes for a living. I just knew that we always had a good conversation at the Saturday market. Former manager for a heavy metal group and motorcyclist extraordinaire, she shared this information with me when I told her that I was entering the KCRW Pie Contest. Being who she is, Penny signed up to enter a pie for each category. Six in all. "I'll also teach you how to bake" I also mentioned my entry to my friend, Naomi Kobrin. She had recently purchased and restored a ranch-like property filled with loquat trees. "I used to make loquat pies when I was younger. I am going to enter one for the contest" The three of us go to work. I know I want to enter a cherry pie. And I know I want this pie to have a very slight liquor flavor to it. Alice Water's cherry filling fills the bill. Penny will show me how to follow her recipe and make the crust. Drawing on her creativity, Naomi makes plans. I help her pick, peel and pit. She makes jams and marmalade, and reductions to test pie fillings. I am on the tasting end of all of these experiments. Penny makes her list. We share ideas at the markets, talk over strategies, and commiserate about past pie and cake fails Two weeks ago the rubber hits the road. I have my first run-through with Penny. It goes well. She makes a four cheese quiche that is shared between her, I and her biker/carpenter husband, Al. Naomi experiments with how to make a unique pie even more unique. Thursday, I find that there is going to be over 500 contestants. Friday, I can not find tart cherries so I practice with sweet dark cherries with half the sugar. Pie fail! Naomi bakes two pies. The fruit is loose. It’s heavy on cardamom. Yesterday at the market I say to myself " What the hell am I doing? I've baked just 2 pies and I am entering a competition" Naomi and I bake our two pies each for the event (one for competition. The other to serve to guests) We realize that we are not going to be able to taste these pies. Naomi bakes her two. One is a little flatter than the other. Both are latticed. I have not fluted my first pie well. Once in the oven and heat the pie edges flatten and hang over the edge. The pie opens and juices bubble over the side landing on the bottom of the range. Soon there is smoke in the oven that I have to let out. I open the oven to take out the pie. Smoke comes out with it. I freak out. This is not my home. Naomi graciously bites her tongue. We open the doors to let the smoke and scent out. Naomi cleans the bottom of the range. I wash what needs do be washed. The pie still has to be entered. based on the look of it I call it "My Junkyard Dog We both finish. Naomi remains quietly gracious and goes to bed. I put in the second pie. It comes out looking prefect. I meet Naomi at the Royce Quad in the early afternoon. I have worked a market so Naomi has brought all the pies to UCLA on her own. She checks in the pies. I arrive and meet her at our serving station. The event begins. I soon see how people are attracted to Naomi's loquat pie. There is a sign in front of each plate showing the contestants number and type of pie. Some people walk by her pie and do a double take. "What the hell is this" What I find fascinating is that most people have a slice, start a conversation and share a loquat story from their past. It's lovely and unexpected how a fruit so neglected can also be so inspirational and imaginative I go to taste Penny's apple pie. It is fantastic. I taste Naomi's. She's added jalapeno pepper to the mix. The filling binds well, Good crust. Sweet but not too sweet. Moderate heat on the back end. All ingredients blend well. No dominance. Our pie pans empty, We take a break, get some water, sit on the grass and await for the awards ceremony. Penny wins two second place ribbons. One is for her apple pie. It's time for the fruit pie awards. I record with my i-phone. The announcer mentions how the third-place pie surprised the judges. I soon realize that they could be talking about Naomi. Then they mention the flavor that made the decision for them... Jalapeno. We go nuts before Naomi's name is announced. One last bit of coolness. 7-8 guys won awards. Two won two times. The first one kind of had the look of a louse. He wears a hipster fedora, is probably in his mid-fifties, and looks like he is holding a plastic cup of beer in his left hand. The second man has the look and demeanor of a 6'7 football player. Now go support your local pie maker.
