YES THANK YOU YOU UNDERSTAND GWEN And Jack and Ianto ofc. But I have been saying that Rose and Gwen would get along like a house on fire since I started watching Torchwood and I am SO GLAD you agree. I went "SO. HERES THE THING. I think there is exactly enough wrong with Gwen that she's actually kind of catnip to Rose and vice versa. And Gwen having a boyfriend is not even remotely a deal breaker for Rose. Gwen is Rose's bisexual awakening and they make it everyone else's problem forever." and then didn't stop typing about it for hours. They need to both be in Jack's life so bad.

In canon, this relationship is so weird. We go from Ianto losing Lisa, to weird watch-based innuendos, to them being "Facebook-it's-complicated" by the end of S1. Ianto fell for Jack very early on (thanks to Fragments and Broken to back this up).

But for Jack, it's the events of TYTNW for him to realise and want to commit to a "standard 21st-century" relationship. And he makes this so clear with how awkward he acts when asking Ianto out. (Really makes you question what his experience with romantic relationships has been like since he became immortal.) Onward from there, we get small moments between the two of them. CoE even went so far as to give a retcon vibe to the relationship ('Boyfriend' anyone?)

What I'm trying to say, is that we need a Broken 2, set during S2.

Okay so I know it's been well over a decade since you've written anything Top Gear related but I was showing my roommate an episode the other day and telling him stuff about my Top Gear fandom days so now I am curious if you've got any bits and pieces leftover from back when, so for the fanfiction meme, Top Gear? (And if you don't, completely understandable)

Oh, wow, we're really getting into the deep lore here. Here's something... mildly weird and dark? By Top Gear standards, at least. Because apparently I decided I should write two crossovers between Top Gear and Silent Hill. But Silent Hill is in Wales, for some reason.

(I know the reason. It's because this was also going to be a crossover with Torchwood. It's probably for the best that it never got finished.)

A light mist was resting on the hills around them.

James was driving, and the other two had just woken up from their shared slumber, which was fortunate because it meant that they could correct his course but unfortunate because they were clearly now never going to stop mocking him about it.

“Snowdon, James,” Jeremy said, rolling his eyes. “North Wales. Meaning that we should have been travelling north. Did you not notice at any point that the sun was on your right?”

“I’ll have you know that I paid particular attention to the position of the sun,” James retorted, irritated; after all, they could have gone much less out of their way had Jeremy or Richard had the common courtesy to stay awake. “It’s just that my last journey to North Wales was in the morning, and, well, I hadn’t really considered the fact that it would be in the west on this occasion.”

Jeremy burst out laughing. James tightened his grip on the steering wheel and stared resolutely ahead.

“Well,” Jeremy said, when he had recovered himself, “as we’re obviously not going to make Snowdonia before nightfall, on account of James being the worst driver in the world, we may as well change the challenge location. There aren’t any good mountains in Cardiff, are there, Hammond?”

When Richard didn’t cheerfully join in with the mockery, Jeremy frowned and twisted around in his seat. “Hammond?”

Richard was sitting in the back, staring intently out into the gathering darkness and fog. At the sound of Jeremy’s voice, he seemed to come out of a reverie and looked up at him, plainly uneasy. “I just – ” He hesitated; glanced out of the window again. “I thought I saw something moving out there.”

Under normal circumstances, Jeremy would have mocked him for such an unmanly display of nerves, but something about Richard’s tone or the atmosphere in the car made him hesitate. Instead, he frowned, looking back to the windscreen. “It is getting dark pretty quickly, isn’t it? James, what time is it?”

“I don’t know why you can’t check the time yourself; you’re not the one driving,” James muttered, flicking on the headlamps and glancing at the display. “It’s six o’clock.”

“It’s six o’clock in early August,” Jeremy said in disbelief. “I knew Wales was a miserable country, but this is ridiculous.”

“Can we go back?” Richard asked. There was an odd tightness to his voice. “There must’ve – James, you must’ve passed a hotel or something somewhere.”

“Hammond,” Jeremy said, laughing, “I’m not happy about having to stay in Cardiff either, but it’s not – ”

And then a dark shape lurched towards them out of the fog and James jerked the steering wheel so hard that the car skidded off the road and halfway down a grassy embankment before it came to a halt.

For a moment, all three of them were very still and very silent. James was shaking.

“You’ve got reactions, James,” Jeremy said eventually, with a nervous laugh. “Why can’t you ever put a bit of that speed into our challenges?”

“Don’t joke,” James said, still gripping the steering wheel as if it were the only thing anchoring him in place. His face was very white. “I almost hit someone.”

torchwood/doctor who: most welcoming place ever, everyone is super sweet and people who interact with me have great takes and are super lovely. i did get told to kill myself in tags of a sad post about jack harkness twice so far but idk that one was kinda deserved.

pacific rim: starved for new content and have been handing the same 5 posts i made around in a circle for months now. lovely sense of humor, great fandom.

star trek voyager: super chill and just happy to be here. once they actually find your posts they also get handed around in a circle (even if they're about a rarepair!) which i deeply appreciate. fandom vets love answering questions and everyone is super sweet and social!

borderlands: the wild wild west. some characters straight up have no fandom existence (hi mordecai baby i miss you) and the handsome jack enjoyers are just perpetually at war with themselves. one of my posts that featured 2 memes which barely HINTED at jack/rhys content received anon hate at one note and it cited not the fact that handsome jack is a child abusing murderer but the fact that he nonconsensually controlled rhys' body as to why it's toxic. i got ummmmm actually 🤓 -ied and called dumb on a post with like 25 notes despite the fact i even tagged that it's not that serious and to not do that. someone came into my askbox to call out another person for asking a question. why do y'all seem to just despise each other lmao?

2. What's your total Ao3 word count? 1,855,326 per my stats page - it's kind of wild!

3. What fandoms do you write for? My current two mains are Shadowhunters and Fast and Furious. I have in the past posted stories for Daredevil, Merlin, Harry Potter, Torchwood, The Defenders, Sherlock, Four Brothers and Suits. I have other fandoms I've started fics in but not finished/posted

5. Do you respond to comments? I respond to all comments while the story is in progress and then for probably a couple of months after it ends before I stop. Unless someone asks a specific question, then I always respond. I wish I could do all of them ever but life makes it hard.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I almost answered none of them before I remembered Addicted, which is about Brian and Dom hooking up during the first movie which I mostly wrote to prove to myself I could do smut. I'm pretty sure it ends with Brian realizing Mia (who he's supposed to be maybe getting together with as per the movie) heard them do that and Dom knew she would and from there Brian understanding that they're imploding even without him and the FBI.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Literally all the others, lol. I'm a happy ending girlie.

8. Do you get hate on fics? Yes, in the Shadowhunters fandom if I write Jace as a good parabatai. Occasionally for if I write Isabelle as a good sister or Clary as not a total piece of shit. Also sometimes if I write Alec in a way that suggests maybe Magnus isn't the greatest in the world who has suffered more than Alec ever will.

9. Do you write smut? Yes but I generally prefer the fade to black approach

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you have written? I've never written a crossover.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I'm aware of I don't think. I don't even know if I would want to know, like that would consume me in the worst way

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes, but not as Marchling. All of the comments were telling me that the translator was changing things and it was a bad translation and the person doing it was getting really weird. It was just like a nightmare kind of so now I request no one translate my fics. I'm sure someone would do it better and I'm just being all oversensitive because I got burned once but I'd rather just not go down that road again.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes, but also not as Marchling.

14. What's your all time favorite ship? I honestly don't think I have one, it really depends on my mood.

15. What is a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Oh absolutely. I have a couple of Shadowhunters stories that I doubt will ever be finished because they just don't want to be written I think. I love the ideas but the ideas don't love me

16. What are your writing strengths? I think I write dialogue well. I try to make sure that I include some sort of realistic recovery even if the story is shorter. I like to experiment with formatting to help tell the story and I think it's generally effective

17. What are your writing weaknesses? I can't write drabbles. I am not good at action scenes. I don't do enough description.

18. Thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics? I've been corrected in the comments more than once, lol. I like to do the dialogue in another language but write the English in italics so even if I'm wrong everyone still knows what it was meant to be.

19. First fandom you wrote for? I was like 11 or 12 and I posted my first two stories at the same time. One for a fandom I won't name because they're still out there and it's small enough you could find them and I'd rather die. The other for Angel the TV series. I got more comments on the other fandom one and so I was embarrassed that the Angel one got way less and I deleted it lmao. Did I mention I was in middle school?

20. Favorite fic you have written? I am so proud of so many of my stories but I think the Marked in Trust series is always going to be just the tiniest bit extra special in my heart.

Let's start with something hard:

Star Trek Enterprise:

This is... going to be interesting. I'm not a fan of this show and it has alienated me from the first time I've watched it.

But I will give this the good old College Try.

Things I like about Enterprise: I appreciate that as a show, it was trying a new thing and that it was experimental. They tried to distance itself from the Star Trek franchise by not using 'Star Trek' at first, but they returned to it.

I appreciate NX-01's sparse interiors that gave it a more submarine look showing it's one of the first ships out in space. It reminded me a bit of SeaQuest but for space.

I appreciate seeing an Asian woman in space! I wish there was more of Hoshi just like I wish there was more of Toshi Sato on Torchwood. But also there are more Japanese surnames than Sato.

T'Pol was really interesting and I appreciate T'Pol and Trip's love story and how hard it is for them as the first Vulcan/Human pairing. Jolene Blalock is also a good actress.

Braga and Berman handed-off the show to Manny Coto who did a really good job for season 4. Only good things can come from that except for the finale.

Phlox is a fun character.

12 Monkeys

I wish 12 Monkeys was more popular than it is.

It's so damned good. 12 Monkeys has a really great cast of characters, I love the awesome women.

I love how everyone is so complicated and messy. The first season, admittedly, is slow because it was building blocks for what will happen but also if you watched the last season and the first season -- it legit blew my mind because it contextualized a lot of moments in season 1.

Season 2 is when 12 Monkeys becomes the show it wanted to be from the start. (SyFy forced Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett to rebrand their show idea from something original to 12 Monkeys).

IMO, 12 Monkeys is the best Time Travel show I've ever watched. It also had such a great soundtrack!

It is also such a romantic show, in every sense of the word. The whole beating heart of why the characters do what they do. Right or wrong and right and wrong. Because of love.

Cassandra Railly

Goes through a journey from the beginning to the end -- she starts thrown into the middle of a time travel story. She cares so much for people but ends up hardened and cynical.

She always, always is about owning her own agency. (Season 3 starting episodes are rough because of that). Right or wrong, she owns her decisions and she doesn't want anyone to take that from her.

Jennifer Goines

The Artist Currently Known As Primary! Jennifer started out very lost in season 1 and first half of season 2, she's had a tragic childhood but when she finally knows who she is in this 'verse and what she can do, she slowly gains power.

And, essentially, Jennifer is the most Important Person on this 'verse

Dr. Katarina Jones

She's the leader of the Splinter program. Katarina Jones is like Kathryn Janeway except a lot more morally gray and more willing to be ruthless. She will do whatever it takes to fulfill her goal.

And she starts off unlikable (but I actually liked her from the jump). She is complicated and thorny. And she has hubris for days.

And, of course just like Janeway -- she has a moment when Jones meets her past self and it's just as fun when Past and Present/Future Janeway meet!

In the beginning, Team Splinter didn't even like each other much but by the end of the series they are a family.

It's a serious show but 12 Monkeys also has time for levity and fun, a fun time travel heist in the 80s is one that comes to mind. Or when some team member gets stuck in the past and has to find a way to earn some money.

Or when the team realized they had to steal from their past selves.

Anyway, I highly recommend this show:

Reverse Unpopular Opinion on… Torchwood!

Oh, I love Torchwood, I think it’s fantastic. Some of my favorite characters in all of Doctor Who canon. They all want to kill each other. They all will die for each other (promise) (threat). If I think about Jack & Gwen’s mutual Insane Besties Behavior™️, i need to chew on something to calm down. It even has Martha Jones! Martha Jones stamp of approval!

I like miracle day. It’s so stupid it wraps back around to brilliant. and then to stupid again. and then back to brilliant solely for the gwen & jack of it all.

I love this show so much that when my mom’s fiance asked me how to start watching doctor who, I told him it was required to understand the show and that he had to watch it. and like. im not wrong. im not.

3. In your opinion, what’s your best fic?

Oh noooo, not my self-ranking. Um. This changes at any given moment based on where my head's at, but let's go with lessons exquisitely crafted today. Still pleased with that one. And I do want to believe my writing has gotten comparatively stronger in the past few years, rather than digging up any of my older faves.

5. Is there any fic that makes you super happy to reread and remember you wrote that?

Honestly, lots of them! My primary audience as a writer is myself, and I've always been a rereader by nature - I've reread my favorite books often enough that I could probably rewrite them myself from scratch, and I revisit fics CONSTANTLY, including my own. The longer ones tend to be the ones I'm most proud of years later, I guess. Boden's Mate (X-Men) and The Rose of Jericho (Torchwood) particularly come to mind at the moment. But yeah.

7. What’s the fic you most want to continue (unfinished or no)?

I don't have any posted WIPs at the moment (huzzah!), so there's no one breathing down my neck for anything in particular right now. Just my own WIP folder in gdocs. Um, let's be honest, I've been toying with the idea of a sequel to The Conspirator's Gift for years now, and it's been coalescing more strongly in my head of late (I know the basic murder mystery and surrounding plot, including who dies, whodunnit and why, and who the other suspects are), so that's...a distinct possibility at some point. Not anytime in the immediate future, though, if only because it would be another longer fic, and those just plain take time.

3. A character fandom helped you appreciate

There's been a few, Xander in BTVS who is written so much better in fanon than canon. Spander became my OTP for Buffy because of how well he's written.

Lots of wrestlers. Reading fic has enabled me to look at wrestlers with new eyes. Kink 101 reformulated how I look at Kyle, Bobby and Cole. I wouldn't know about many many wrestlers without fandom on here waving them at me. Some of the brilliant posts on here have enabled me to know back stories and lore without needing to go off into a world that can feel a bit overwhelming

21. a fandom you're not active in anymore but that you still really like

Probably Torchwood. My first "proper" fandom, where I actually went to cons and met people and made friends (waves at @absdax, @galadriel1010 and @hd-hale). I may not be as feral for Torchwood now, but it will always be a safe space and a home.

25. a piece of advice for taking care of yourself in fandom spaces

Remember that the telly box is a one way viewing device. The block button is your friend. You do not have to entertain shitty opinions about your fave. Be nice to people. You do not have to do all the things. If it makes you happy, fuck what people think.
