A few moments after I put a bunch of dried purple iris blooms into a jar of hot water! It turned blue almost immediately.

I put silk in it to test, which turned a light grey that faded overnight.

I also painted a bit with the water that turned blue (super dark blue over time) And it turned a blueish purple (Ft a sun I painted with pollen and the grey silk).

Here's where things get interesting. I didn't see much promise in a light grey silk, and I had heard alum+iris can make green paint, so I wanted to see if I could force a lake pigment out of it. The jar on the left of the right photo above is slightly bluer because I added about a teaspoon of alum to it, while the other was untouched but had an iron mordanted silk cake in it.

I know iris pigment changes color depending on pH, and i *suspect* this is because of anthocyanins, but I don't know for sure so don't take my word on that.

Anyways, I do think the alum lake pigment approach would work, as I got a bit out of it, but I ran into a couple problems: One, I ran out of alum, and Two: I didn't have any good filtration system for getting the pigment out. So this will have to be dogeared for another day.

Instead, I simply took the leftover alum water and dipped a paintbrush right in, which yielded a brilliant clear blue that soom faded to a lovely teal as it dried. It's more green than the non-alum water, which makes sense. It's even greener than these photos show! It may even get greener over time, we'll see.

Also of note is some iris leaf cordage I made! My mom pulled up a few irises in a flower bed and I took the biggest leaves from them.

So, I don't know if they're even the most ideal species, and they certainly weren't at the right stage of growth, but I managed to get intact-enough fibers from about half of the ones I collected.

I struggled so much getting the fibers out of the leaves, there's only *two* in each leaf and ypu have to *scrape* them out with your fingernail/a shell in a weird way (that was not helped by them being too young). But I found a decent method and got them processed!

Iris cord is supposedly super strong, which checks off with this cord!

There's still other stuff going on like putting a bunch of rusty water into a jar with the rest of the iris juice, and seeing if that metal oxide could force precipitation (I'm skeptical because of how strong oxygen bonds are, but I am not a chemist so idk). I did get *something* to precipitate and the iris juice was clearer, but idk if that's actually due to the iron binding to the pigment, or if the precipitate was just the intact rust particles and the pigment vanished some other way.

Oh well, something sure happened though! The precipitate is brown/gray and on a coffee filter right now, which, side note: It's not good for filtering lake pigments because they're fibrous and get mixed into the pigment itself.

Still doing tests with that stuff tho so maybe an extension post later!

Below, in the top right, is the silk+iron+iris. On the left is the light grey that I put *back* into the alum water, which has a slightly cyan tint irl. I wouldn't be surprised if it fades away soon, but still fun to mess around with.

But ye, that concludes some of the fun I've been having with irises recently! My mom wants to get rid of them all but I'm making her keep a patch of them lol. Sadly they're about done blooming but it was fun while it lasted. When the leaves get more mature, hopefully I'll be able to get some better fibers from them!

Ok after the castle, the 2nd half of the game feels kinda short, like in actual time spent, I don't think it actually is, I just did all of the 2nd half of the game in one sitting (except the final boss) which took about 4 hours, but I also didn't fully search every single area, I pretty much just got the major secrets. It's like, fine, but I don't really have much to say about any of the post castle stuff, all of the mandatory areas afterwards are very creepy and atmospheric and scary, but in terms of like, anything other than atmosphere, uhhh they kinda just, exist. Like they're not bad, but I literally just played all of them and the only specific things I remember are the cool desert temple, and the prison that was kinda lame. 2nd half definitely took a big dip compared to the first half, which a large part of that is probably just that my interest kinda just naturally wanes the further I get into most games regardless of the actual quality of the later parts, but like, idk I feel like the 1st half just had way more interesting areas. Like almost every area in the 2nd half of the game felt really similar, like they all had a similar color palette and general vibe going for them, and the ones that were more unique were really, really short, like the lava area, I think I got through that entire area in like 15 minutes and I think I found literally every secret. Also the funni tower, the Tower of Abyss, yea it was okay, like I get the idea, and if you care about leaderboards and improving personal times it's probably cool and all but like, it was really easy, I went in expecting the last couple of floors to get really difficult but no, the difficulty was kinda pretty consistently low throughout all of it, probably because I feel like most enemies aren't that hard, aside from a few annoying ones, which a few of those did appear in the tower but never enough to actually be dangerous. Even the final floor was just another Abyss Demon which like, the first time I fought I thought it was really easy, and this time it was just the same but I know it's patterns even more like none of the enemies in this game are really interesting or difficult enough to fight individually to make a combat-focused area like that fun, it was kinda just boring, and long, and tedious. The reward was cool tho, I never used it because it's really slow and I don't like slow weapons but like, it's stats are good, it's a good weapon it shoots a magic beam that's cool! I do plan to go back and get all of the secrets and go through the rest of the optional areas I missed next, but that's like, not right now I've played this for 5 hours straight today and that's like half of my total playtime, I feel like I'll probably enjoy that next play session a lot more, because finding secrets makes my brain go "waow! :D" and this game has a lot of cool secrets. I'm gonna have to change my computer's clock to be on a full moon for one of them tho I HATE THOSE TYPES OF SECRETS WHY IS THERE AN ACHIEVEMENT ON THE STEAM VERSION OF PSYCHONAUTS FOR PLAYING ON CHRISTMAS THERE'S NOT EVEN ANY IN-GAME CHRISTMAS STUFF as far as I'm aware AND IT'S NOT A CHRISTMAS THEMED GAME FUCK YOU PSYCHONAUTS yea i don't like those secrets they're unfun :c. I'll also get to level 99 which won't be hard because I'm already level 74 and leveling is pretty easy, but I also kinda wanna get all weapons and like, :( that requires just hitting things with a bunch of useless weapons to give them exp so I can upgrade them into new weapons :(. Maybe I won't do that, maybe I'll just do the fun extra stuff I think that would be a better idea :). Also this session I did 1 attempt of the final boss. I'm not doing a 2nd one right now that fight sucks I hate that guy he has too much health, why are the 2 bosses in this game the only even somewhat difficult combat challenges and they're both just massive damage sponges that aren't even fun????
