Gareth taps the wooden drumsticks to the tune of his own beat against his denim clad knee. Tossing the sticks up and into the air, his plan is to catch them and pose like a real rockstar. He does not catch them. Instead, they spin for a minute then bop him in the head, before flinging across his mother's garage that they use for band practice nearly every day.

“Quit fooling around, Gareth,” Jeff snickers at his friend, while bending over his guitar to toy with the strings. Nothing sounds as clean as a freshly tuned guitar.

“Where’s your friend?” Gareth throws out at Eddie.

Eddie’s dealt with the poisoned attitudes from the both of you for far too long. It’s rare that you and Gareth get along, but you put up with each other for Eddie’s sake. It’s sad, honestly. Eventually, Eddie wants you to become friends with his band mates. You like Jeff and you like Grant just fine. Neither of them you shared a single common interest, so what is the tiff between you and Gareth?

“Come on, man,” Eddie’s down to groveling for a solution at this point, “you said you would try today.”

“Why can’t we be friends?” Jeff sings smoothly into the microphone while striking a harmonious chord to chime along with his interpretation of the song that has plagued his mind for the past week by the band War. Besides, that was funny. Jeff laughs into his microphone.

“Shut up, Jeff,” Gareth grumps.

Jeff shrugs his shoulders, “mic check.”

“Is she even going to show up?” Gareth stands to search for where his drumsticks have gone. Each of them have made a fair distance across the garage.

“She’ll be here,” Eddie says a bit more testy than before. There’s only so much he can put up from his young friends.

“What’s your deal with his girl, anyway?” Jeff is the newest of the bunch. Gareth introduced him to Eddie, after they became partners for a project in school.

“She’s not my girl,” Eddie snorts as though the image is completely impossible. “She’s my best friend.”

“Yeah, haven’t heard that one before,” Jeff mutters into the microphone.

Eddie points, “tune your guitar.”

Gareth sees you at school. You’re in some of the same classes. In the next few weeks, you’ll be in the same high school. He absolutely cannot get away from you. Everywhere he goes, you’re there. It’s the same with Eddie. You follow him around too.

If that isn’t enough, you’re joining band practice now. This is your first one, since Eddie has convinced Gareth to play nice. Maybe you’re important to Eddie, and maybe he cares a bit too much. It doesn’t matter though.

You’re turning into the driveway of the address that Eddie gave you this morning. Kicking out your feet to stop your bike from peddling into the garage, you throw out the kick stand and you swing your leg over the seat.

“Hey, guys!” You wave.

Eddie jumps out of his seat to great you warmly. The two of you exchange pleasantries, while Gareth finds more interest in the way his drum set is designed.

There are a few thoughts passing between Gareth’s ears, while the heart inside of his chest furiously pumps blood. You’re taller than the girl he saw at the beginning of the summer. All of your hair and your skin have become bronzy from the sun. Whatever summer camp you spent your whole summer at, he wishes that you would go back and that you would stay there.

“Hi, Gareth,” you're holding up your end of the bargain that you made with Eddie about being nice to Gareth.

Gareth does look up. His face flushes white as cream. You’re a bit taken aback by how he looks at you. The same Gareth you left behind in this town is the same one sitting in front of you.

“Uh,” Eddie turns you away, but not before shoot Gareth the most gruesome glare. If only Gareth could apologize, yet he’s lost his words somehow. They glaze over the tip of his tongue, while getting lost in the back of his throat. But, Eddie guides you to a set of folding chairs that were used for Emerson family camping trips. “Let’s have you sit here.”

“Should I be here?” You mutter lowly enough to hit Eddie’s ear.

Eddie clears his throat and then hikes up his jeans from falling down his waist. There’s no telling what goes through Gareth’s mind, and he’s got virtually no idea how to put you at ease.

“He’s shy,” Eddie hopes you’ll by it.

You’re rolling your eyes at his lame excuse, but when you sigh that’s when Eddie knows you’ll let it go for now.

Eddie spins like a top and makes a beeline for Gareth. He’ll spin that little shit’s head in a minute!

“Gareth,” Eddie growls lowly, so you can’t hear. “What the hell is going on with you?”

Jeff mutters, “I think I know.”

“Why do you care if we get along?” Gareth says over Jeff's nonsense. “Can’t she just come to a show?”

“Do you really want her at your cousins fifth birthday party, while we sing happy birthday?” Eddie knows he can’t say ‘yes’ to that. Hell, Eddie doesn’t want you there. You’re his number one supporter, and if you catch his metal band singing to a bunch of five year olds? Oh, he’ll never live that down.

Gareth peers around his tall friend because he knows he can’t see over that irritatingly large head of his. You’re fussing with a lawn chair that won’t unfold if you don’t take your thumb away from the latch.

In an act of peace, Gareth walks around Eddie making a big show of exactly what he’s doing. He helps you. Specifically, he unfolds the chair and brushes the dirt off of the seat for you. Avoiding your big eyes that could swallow anyone up like a siren, Gareth waltzes back to his drum set.

“Can we begin our practice now?” Gareth slams his drumsticks together, while counting off the beat.

Their music isn’t to your taste. In fact, sometimes you want to find an excuse to walk away from all the noise. Yet, you stay put where you’ve sat yourself. Smiling and nodding along to each song, you give your critics during the break period between each song.

The boys are admittedly good, albeit a bit tone deaf. Although, if you perform like them for hours, you wouldn’t be able to hear much after a while either.

It’s weird.

Eddie keeps turning his head to Gareth, who has a spiteful grimace written along his face. Had they argued before their practice? It’s tough to tell because Eddie has an enthusiastic way of speaking to people these days. He loves to press any buttons on your brain that could make you tick.

You’re quite used to his theatrics being that you live across from each other. This is the first time, however, you’ve gone away for so long.

Camp had been fun. You signed up alongside Robin, and when you got there you had met Chrissy Cunningham. She’s your age. She went to middle school with you, and is transferring into high school just like you. The three of you bonded over the many activities at the sleep-away camp.

It became bittersweet to come home. Playing with a group of boys didn’t seem as fun as getting your nails painted, which is what Chrissy suggested you all do when you get home. Flicking at your dead nail beds, you rest your gaze upon the hair popping up on your legs. Squeezing your skirt as low as it could go, your cheeks redden a bit.

You’ll give Chrissy a call after practice is over.

It comes to an end a little over an hour later, and you clap your hands to their final bow as a band. You cheer on for an encore that wouldn’t come.

Eddie chest rises and falls when he laughs. There was a time during their practice that Eddie ripped off his shirt when he had soiled the material with sweat. That sweat that now glistens across his tummy. You find yourself watching a bead of sweat slick down his chest and across his stomach, before nestling into the hair down there.

While Eddie doesn’t see you watching him closely because he’s too deep into a conversation with Jeff about chords, Gareth does catch what you're doing. This is what he worries about. You’re too involved.

You snap out of your trance, and you announce to the boys, “I should get going. I have plans to meet up with someone today!”

Eddie whips his head around, “do you need a ride?”

Your heart thuds.

Eddie has his license now, and he's always offering to take you places (he offered to take you places when he didn’t have his license too). But, your mom’s warning rang clear in your head. If she caught you in his van, you might be banished from ever seeing him again.

After she lost her job, she spent more time alone with her thoughts. If she’s not sleeping the morning away, she’s peering out the kitchen window with a cigarette between her lips or resting between her fingers.

When you got back from camp, she puffed at you like a dragon protecting her treasures. She spent a hell of a time inspecting you for something. You’re not really sure what she wanted from you. You’re still a bit on edge.

The last thing you need right now is for Eddie to bring you home.

“I’m alright,” you swear.

I've been thinking about where everybody sleeps in the German wing. We know Kurona, Isagi, Hiori and Yukimiya share a dorm room.

This seems harmonious. With the exception of Yukimiya and Isagi's tiff between the Barcha and Manshine matches, this group of four get on quite well. They're all well-mannered and respectful individuals (off the pitch). Perhaps they all agreed to bunk together.

If four to a room is standard, my headcanon is that the next room is occupied by these guys:

Raichi, Igaguri and Gagamaru are a package deal at this point. They're used to each other's quirks. Neru's cheerful enough to fit in with their clique. I can see him agreeing to room with the other three.

It seems likely that the German players may sleep separately to the Blue Lock players. While there's no evidence for this, we also don't see co-mingling between the two cohorts outside of matches, besides Kaiser barging into the locker-room or using communal areas like the training/AV rooms. Dorming separately also gives everyone a chance to take out the translators during rest periods.

If the German dorms are separate from the Blue Lock ones, then that leaves these two:

Bringing us to the point of this post.

HEADCANONS –

The Winx are everything to Flora. She credits so much of how far she’s grown to them and can’t believe how lucky she is to have such incredible friends. The brunette has a tendency to succumb to her insecurities (both with her abilities and in everyday life.) It holds her back from realizing her full potential, so she really appreciates the Winx being there to lift her up and boost her self-esteem. If you ask Flora, she’ll tell you they’re a family. And, like families do, the group argues every once in a while. Flora is very non-confrontational when it comes to her friends. Whenever there’s a tiff, she struggles to express herself because she doesn’t want to start a fight. She is a peacekeeper at her core. And because of that, Flora almost always ends up in the middle. She’s just very good at seeing both sides!

As a nature fairy, Flora is kind of a flower herself. At least, that’s how she perceives herself. She relies on nature to show her the right path. Being as sensitive as she is to plants and living things, Flora empathizes with them on very deep level that many may not understand. She can tell when they’re in distress, if they’re over or under-watered, when they need repotting or new soil… the list goes on and on. Their mood and energy even affects her directly. The abuse/destruction of nature is physically and mentally taxing to Flora; and the girl does not do well in places with an absence of nature. At all. 

Peace, tranquility and compassion are three of Flora’s core values. It’s not uncommon for her to get a little overwhelmed in places/situations where they’re disturbed. She’ll share her meditations and yoga practices with anyone who’s interested and she absolutely adores helping people. Almost to a fault.She might not notice when she’s being taken advantage of because she’s so happy and eager to lend a hand.

Flora battles with a strong sense of justice, but also a strong desire and natural connection to harmony. She tries her absolute best to achieve both when some sort of creature gets loose or trouble arises. Don’t get her wrong, she won’t turn away mischief to avenge her friends as long as no one gets hurt. If you happen to cross a Winx, don’t be surprised to find a particularly troublesome breed of blossom filling your bedroom with wild vines and a ghastly smell.

The fairy can be a bit of a pushover sometimes. Especially when it comes to people she cares about. At Alfea, Flora typically was the one who wanted to follow the rules if something went awry. She lovesss learning and takes pride in being a good student (no matter how often Stella calls her a nerd for it.) Her friends however… well, they usually wanted to investigate whatever trouble occurred. Needless to say, Flora was convinced easily enough to follow along with them.

Flora positively adores art and poetry, and the fairy is a huge romantic at heart. Whenever she has a crush, a sort of calm panic overcomes her as she overthinks/reads into absolutely everything. Their energy. What they did and didn’t do. The poor girl gets so tongue tied that she can barely even get a word out. It’s not uncommon for Flora to coerce one of her more forward friends to talk to the person for her and get some intel on how they’re feeling.

Her mother was pretty controlling. Didn’t like her going off to Alfea. She was very passive aggressive and emotionally demanding. Flora loves her home, and she loves her family, but she wants to be a flower in her own garden, not someone else’s.

Holds her yoga sessions outside whenever possible. Most times she won’t even use a mat when she does as she’d rather take the time to ground herself on the grass.

One of those people who, when she tidies up, things get twice as messy before they actually get clean.

Cottage core AF. Very patient, hopeful, and encouraging.

Took ballet classes growing up because she thought it looked so beautiful and graceful. Then she realized how aggressive and demanding it could actually be. She still likes to do it, but just for fun. 

Extremely protective of her friends and her younger sister, Miele.

Nervous giggles. Fidgets with whatever’s closest to her. Her hair, fingers, jewelry, a straw. Especially when she’s daydreaming. She’s a big, big daydreamer.

Doodles leaves, vines and flowers a lot.

We don’t really know why Pedro didn’t go to TIFF. Maybe he really wanted to spend time with friends, maybe he was expected back on set soon and maybe he went to the museum because the production is moving on… If you make me choose between London and Toronto, I’ll choose London 1000% 😂

A lot of actors find it very stressful to do press events and some are refusing to participate in them to preserve their mental health. Question for the cards: does he enjoy promoting the work?

Hello! I asked the cards about how he might feel doing press events and premieres and the first pull was the 8 of Coins, Knight of Cups and The Moon.

8 of Coins means he goes to these events very committed and dedicated. He puts in the effort into them and he focus on his tasks. Knight of Cups is about the way he can handle these situations with a lot of class and grace. He knows how to be tactful and diplomatic, a charming and idealistic artist who may be a little dramatic, full of emotions, but he’s always emotionally in the moment. The Moon, on the other hand, points to him also feeling a lot of anxiety, with fears, insecurity and uncertainty affecting the way he will look at things. There’s this fear of things being just an illusion, as if he would find out they are not really what they look like.

The second pull was the Knight of Coins, The Empress and the 6 of Swords. Similar to the 8 of Coins, the Knight of Coins is committed to his craft, he puts in the effort and he will be very reliable and focused on the work. The Empress means he feels very passionate and creative doing the press events. He’s nurturing and generous, someone who brings harmony to work and to the workplace. 6 of Swords is about leaving the hardship times behind, feeling relieved and peaceful in a way, like he knows he’s progressing in his career, pointing to a brighter future.

So all in all, he seems to enjoy his press events and premieres, he values them as the result of his hard work, as moving on from difficult times. He puts his effort into them and will be passionate about them, but there could be a feeling of uncertainty and insecurity.

One night; Floriz is plotting revenge ever since Tiff betrayed her.

Floriz: Oh, that no good lifemate of mine has betrayed me! Well no matter, it won’t stop me from releasing my army!

Floriz turns to her slime army

Floriz: My almighty slime army! It is time to take down the Solar Opposites and gain New Shlorp! Go! Destroy New Shlorp and the Solar Opposites!

The slime army starts moving as Floriz laughs

Floriz: Look out Korvotron! Your world is about to change!

We then cut to New Shlorp where everyone is getting ready for the Shlorpian Moon Festival (like in MLP: The Movie)

Korvo: Aah… this is perfect. The Shlorpian Moon Festival is almost complete.

Janiz: I know! Everything looks great!

Korvo: I agree my darling big sister of mine. And the best part is, nothing is ever gonna go wrong:

Meanwhile, Jesse is meditating

Jesse runs out the room in joy.

Then, the ship clouds the sky as everyone gasp in horror. Korvo and the gang turns towards the ship as they grow shock.

Korvo: The fuck?

Jesse: *manages to catch up* Guys! Guys! Something is definitely wrong!

Terry: We know! What the fuck is the giant ship doing here?!

The ship lands and the slime army comes out

Korvo: *gasp in horror* EVERYONE! RUN FOR SHELTER!

The Shlorpians run but some are consumed by the slime monsters and turned into skeletons

Yumyulack: Holy fuck! Those slime monster are killing people and turned into skeletons!

Jesse: Run!

Kal: Oh fuck! This is so not happening!

The gang keeps running as fast they can away from the slime monsters as they try to figure out how to get away from them.

Terry: Korvo! What do we do?!

Korvo: Janiz, what is going on?!

Janiz: I don’t know! But I think New Shlorp is in big trouble!

Korvo: We have to figure out who sent them before-

Suddenly, a few of the slime monsters surrounded them as Korvo tries to think of a plan

Korvo: I got it! *puts on the crystal necklace as it glows*

Kara: Wait! What’s happening?!

Korvo transforms and is then seen wearing a white tuxedo with snowflake patterns

Korvo: Neat, right?!

Terry: Damn honey, you look faboo. So what are you planning to do with this?

Korvo charges up his ice powers

Korvo: Time for you all to chill out!

Korvo blasts his ice magic at the army and freezes them

All: Woo-hoo! Nice Korvo! Now let’s get the fuck out of here! Nice one bro! Nice ice blast man!

Korvo removes the necklace and turns back to normal before putting the necklace in his pocket

Korvo: Just in case I need it later.

Janiz: Nice! Come on come on! Let’s keep moving!

The Shlorpians keep moving and manage to get to safety

Kal: Phew that was a close one. But now what do we do?!

Korvo: What we must do! Save New Shlorp and stop whoever sent those fucked up slime monsters!

Terry groans in anger

Terry: You’re right Korvo! We worked so hard on this and we’re not gonna let he or she get away with it! Right guys?!

All: Yeah!

Meanwhile with Floriz

Floriz: Yes yes! This is finally happening! All of the Shlorpians are up for grabs! Now to figure out a way to find Korvo and his family and get rid of the fuckbag once and for all!

The scene cuts to the Shlorpians at night near a campfire

Yumyulack: Man, this is totally fucked up. I can’t believe slime monsters attack us.

Jesse: Yeah, and now New Shlorp is in trouble!

Korvo leans against Terry

Korvo: *sighs* Terry, I’m really scared. I just hope we can find the person responsible and save New Shlorp before it’s too late.

Terry wipes away Korvo's tears

Terry: Don’t worry Korvy, I’m sure we will

Terry kisses Korvo on the forehead

Korvo: *smiling and blushes* Thank you Terry-bear.

The next morning, Korvo and Terry are seen sleeping together

Korvo: *smiling as he kiss Terry on the lips that wakes him up* Good morning, darling…

Terry: Mmm, morning. Oh. Morning breath.

Korvo: I know. Isn't it wonderful?

Terry: *chuckles as he and Korvo kiss while moaning lovingly*

Jesse: *comes barging in* Good morning! Good morning! The sun is shining through! Good morning! Good morning! To you! And you! And you!

Korvo and Terry laughs in amusement by their daughter’s positivity. Yumyulack comes in yawning

Yumyulack: Morning.

Korvo removes the blanket to reveal he's naked

Korvo: *notices this and gasp* Oh! *covers himself up with the blanket as he giggles*

Terry chuckles

Terry: Still looking prettier than ever, Korvy.

Korvo giggles

Korvo: Sorry. Better go put on my clothes.

Meanwhile with Floriz

Floriz: Alright…. Time to track them!

Floriz turns on her tracking device and sends the coordinates to Korvo and the others

Floriz: Finally! I got the now! *laughs evilly*

Back with the Shlorpians, they continue their journey.

Kara: We're close. I know it's around here somewhere.

Korvo: I hope we’re not too late!

Janiz: Don’t worry lil bro. I’m sure we’ll make it on time. Hopefully.

Yumyulack: Where are we going?

Kara: Don’t worry guys. We’re almost there!

Korvo: Yes!

The group arrives at an ancient city as Terry looks at a picture of it. The picture is lowered to reveal the city in ruins

Korvo: Oh dear. The city looks ruined.

Terry gets down on his knees and starts crying

Terry: Oh God! You fucking maniacs! You blew it up! Goddamn you! Goddamn you all to hell!

Kal: Holy shit! What happened to this place?!

Janiz: The slime army.

Korvo: Oh dear. You’re right. *notices slime on the city* The Slime army must’ve been here! We better keep an eye out for any of the monsters!

Terry starts growling in anger

Korvo: Terry darling? Are you okay?!

Terry: Floriz...

Korvo: Wait. What did you just say?

Terry: FLORIZ! SHE MADE THE SLIME ARMY TO KILL US!

The gang gasp in horror.

Korvo: Sh-she’s back?

Terry growls in response

Janiz: Oh my God. It’s just as I feared… Floriz has finally snapped!

Korvo: Damn it. Terry, we gotta-

Terry screams in fury and punches something as the others recoil in shock.

Jesse: Terry...

Terry breathes in and out in fury. Korvo runs up to comfort his husband.

Korvo: Shh.. it’s okay Terrybear… I’m here.. well stop Floriz…

Terry: Okay...

Korvo gives his hubby a kiss on the cheek to cheer him up.

Janiz: So what now?

Korvo: We keep moving and find help. Hopefully.

The Shlorpians keep moving. Unbeknownst to them, Tiff has been watching them.

Tiff: *whispering* Korvo?

Later, the Shlorpians back at the Solars' house to regroup

Korvo: Okay. This where we can stay low so we can come up with a plan to stop Floriz!

Korvo explains the plan as Terry watches from the door as Speechless by Naomi Scott starts to play

Korvo: Don’t worry. We’ll find a way to stop her.

Terry: I hope so…

Yumyulack: So, you sure this plan will work Korvo?

Korvo: It will.

Janiz: Good. Then let’s do this. For New Shlorp!

The Others (Except Terry): For New Shlorp!

Terry however is still looking down unsure about this.

Korvo: Okay! Now let’s head out and save our planet!

Jesse: FUCK YEAH! *does a primal scream as she knocks down a vase*

All: *amazed* Whoa!

Jesse runs off

Korvo: Terry? You coming?

Terry: Huh? Oh yeah. In a minute.

Terry looks down sadly and sighs. Later, the Shlorpians are trying to find Floriz's lair.

Korvo: Okay, we’re almost close. Be on the lookout for slime monsters!

Yumyulack: How do we know she'll-

Floriz: *offscreen* I GOT YOU NOW!

Korvo: What the-

Suddenly the gang gets ambushed as Floriz and a bunch of Slime Soldiers take them hostage.

Floriz: *chuckles* Well well well. Korvo and his loser husband Tyler.

Korvo: *growls* You monster! You fucking let us go this instant!

Terry: Yeah! And my name is Terry, not Tyler!

Floriz: Oh whatever! It’s too late! I have all of you in my grasp! *laughs evilly*

Janiz: How did you know we'd be here?

Floriz: I was tracking you this whole time! Now nothing can stop me now! Soldiers, bring those fucking Shlorpians to my liar! We got work to do!

Terry: Wait! No! I-

Terry gets knocked out unconscious by the solider as the others gasp.

Korvo: Terrybear! *growls at Floriz*

Floriz knocks out Korvo as the screen cuts to black

Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) with SYCL for GPU-Based JPEG Image Compression. Use the  Intel oneAPI DPC++/C++ Compiler to accelerate concurrent picture compression.

Image compression reduces digital image files without compromising quality. Eliminating superfluous and duplicated data simplifies image storage and transmission over the internet or other networks.

The oneAPI GitHub repository has a code sample for the Discrete Cosine Transform, which is discussed in this blog. It shows how to use SYCL and the Intel oneAPI DPC++/C++ Compiler to create the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), an irreversible picture compression method for JPEG images.

Let’s expand on their discussion of picture compression before getting into the specifics of the code sample.

Applications of image compression in the real world include:

Digital photography to share and store high-resolution photos taken using cameras in an effective manner

Consumer electronics to reduce data usage and storage capacity on mobile devices, such as tablets and smartphones.

Medical imaging to transfer and store medical images efficiently while maintaining image quality for accurate diagnosis.

Discrete Cosine Transform Example

Two categories of image compression methods exist

Lossless compression: This method ensures image quality and accurate image reconstruction from compressed data. PNG, GIF, and TIFF are prominent lossless image formats.

Lossy compression: This method permanently destroys image data, making image reconstruction impossible. JPEG and WebP are popular lossy compression formats.

Lossy compression algorithms often translate the image into a frequency domain before quantizing the frequency components using mathematical approaches like the DCT.

Advantages of Discrete Cosine Transform

Because it tends to concentrate the image signal information in a few low-frequency components, the DCT image compression approach is advantageous. This facilitates the attainment of large compression ratios without sacrificing visual quality.

The loss of image quality resulting from the DCT compression process can be rendered undetectable to the human eye while achieving a large reduction in file size through the careful application of quantization.

Now let’s talk about the Discrete Cosine Transform code sample and how SYCL-based GPU offload can be used to accelerate compression utilising the Intel oneAPI DPC++/C++ Compiler.

Overview of the Intel oneAPI DPC++/C++ Compiler

A high-performance, LLVM-based compiler that complies with industry standards, the  Intel oneAPI DPC++/C++ Compiler aids in the compilation of ISO C/C++ and SYCL applications on a variety of architectures. It is the first compiler in the world to support the most recent version of the SYCL 2020 specification. It supports OpenMP and OpenCL in addition to SYCL and other accelerated parallel computing frameworks.

It is intended to work in harmony with oneAPI libraries, such oneDPL and oneTBB, and to take advantage of them for offloading computation acceleration and optimized parallel execution. Code reusability across heterogeneous hardware platforms, such as  CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs, is made possible by these design qualities.

Discrete Cosine Transform Applications

Concerning The Sample Discrete Cosine Transform Code

The input image is first quantized and the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is applied by the code sample. The resulting intermediate image is then subjected to inverse DCT and de-quantization to yield an output BMP image. This image will be utilized to evaluate the amount of image information lost as a result of the DCT compression method.

DCT Phase

Each pixel’s colour value is stored in the image’s pixel representation. A sum of several cosine functions is used to depict the colour pattern of image subsets. Eight by eight subsections, or “blocks” in the code example, are used to process the image. Only 8 discrete cosine functions can be used to depict an 8×8 image. All that is needed to reconstruct the image from the cosine representation are the coefficients connected to each cosine function. The DCT procedure converts the input image’s 8×8 pixel matrix into an equivalent 8×8 matrix of coefficients.

Step of Quantization

The image data can be compressed thanks to the quantization procedure. The cosine functions that are most pertinent to picture data are ranked in order using a quantizing matrix. If read diagonally (as recorded in the memory), the matrix acquired after DCT is divided by the quantizing matrix, yielding a sequence of integers followed by multiple zeroes. The original image can be compressed because of the long string of zeroes.

Steps for De-quantization and Inverse DCT

The code sample then re-produces the raw image data by performing inverse DCT and de-quantization before writing the quantization output to a file. The final image will not be a reduced version of the original because to the inverse processes. It will, however, reveal the artefacts brought about by an irreversible compression technique such as DCT.

SYCL

SYCL-Based Parallel Computations

An image’s individual 8×8 blocks can be handled concurrently or individually. With a few little tweaks to the original serial approach, the code sample easily achieves SYCL parallelization.

Example of a Product

The code sample was run on a 6th generation Intel Core processor equipped with an integrated Intel Processor Graphics Gen 9 or later and an  Intel oneAPI DPC++/C++ compiler. The example output is shown below. If a compatible GPU is detected, the code will direct execution to it; otherwise, it executes on the CPU (host).Filename: willyriver.bmp W: 5184 H: 3456 Start image processing with offloading to GPU... Running on Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 --The processing time is 6.27823 seconds DCT successfully completed on the device. The processed image has been written to willyriver_processed.bmp
