This Single Comic Panel Makes Me Feral

I want to talk about Gorr the God Butcher. Except no, I don’t, because I didn’t read that comic, because I don’t think Loki was in it (at least not for very long) (Thor: God of Thunder 2012 to be specific). (Please correct me if I’m wrong; I love finding new Loki comics to read, and it wouldn’t be the first time I read a run backwards—Original Sin before Agent of Asgard, Defenders: Beyond before Defenders, Agent of Asgard before Journey into Mystery, etc.) 

I want to talk about what came after, after Gorr was defeated the first time in the comics (spoiler alert). Specifically, one particular panel that makes me feral and incoherent whenever I think about it, that I’m going to try to be coherent about for this post. 

For you to understand what’s happening in the panel (or, okay, what I remember of what’s happening in the panel), you need some context for the plot of King Thor, the run from which the greatest panel in the history of Loki appearances comes (you will learn that I am very hyperbolic, if you have not already discovered it, but I do really love this panel). 

This comic run was written by Jason Aaron. I read it awhile back, and I am a very very slow reader (I have the literal speed of an average ten year old, and I’m currently reading Al Ewing’s Guardians of the Galaxy run, which I refuse to put down for the sake of accuracy. I have to finish it before Immortal Thor comes out in three weeks!). As such, I will be relying on Comic Drake’s video about Gorr on YouTube to fill in the gaps in my memory. I will be skipping most of Gorr’s backstory because the Necrosword is the most important part for King Thor, so if you want that, watch the video or read Thor: God of Thunder (it’s Drake’s favorite Thor comic, so it’s probably pretty good).

Anyway, after the events of God of Thunder years pass, until Thor and Loki are old men, and the universe is breathing its final rattling breaths. Thor has three granddaughters. Loki has come into possession of the Necrosword and is determined to use it to wipe out Thor once and for all. So basically they spend most of the book fighting each other and taunting each other and further destroying the universe with their battle.

Loki brings Gorr back to assist or something, but Gorr regains control of the Necrosword and tries to kill Thor himself and Loki’s like, “No way, you bastard, that’s my destiny.” And then he and Thor are both trying to fight Gorr all over again. But Gorr cuts off Loki’s arm and does some freaky shit to his eyes and then summons All-Black (the Necrosword, a symbiote, the first symbiote) to cover the brothers.

And here comes my favorite panel in any comic.

As All-Black covers the gods, as all hope seems lost, as their hatred and anger backfire and flow over them to murder them both, they reach for each other. Both of them, in the viscous darkness of the god of the symbiotes, they reach out blindly into nothingness. The panel is all inky black, except for the slightest bright spots in the center, two old hands, the fingers on each grasping the other.

Because they have been fighting this battle for most of their lives. Thor, desperate to return to a golden age of brotherhood that maybe never really existed, not understanding how it became twisted and soiled by the neglectful cruelty of the father who had loved him so well. Loki, in pain and laid low by childhood trauma of never being Good Enough or Strong Enough or Noble Enough or Thor Enough, always Second Best, if he even made the cut of ‘best’, always treated as that tiny frost bitten runt of Odin’s enemy rather than heir to the throne, hurting and not knowing how to fix it, trying to fix it by breaking his closeness with his brother over and over and over again. Thor, so often (even throughout this battle) aching to save both the universe and his brother but having to choose one. Loki, only able to see the side of his brother that is so like their father; Loki, the liar, whose silver tongue has always worked best on himself; Loki, burning, always burning. There is this wall of miscommunication between them, a wall that’s been there and been reinforced over a lifetime that’s lasted millennia. But in this panel, at the very end of the world, at the very end of the battle, in the darkness of descending death, the wall crumbles. The anger dies, the hatred withers. The hands reach out, directionless, and find each other. And they take hold. 

Because, after everything, after thousands of years of pain and lies and harsh words, they are brothers. And their love transcends a void manufactured by a God Butcher. It doesn’t have to be thorki. I don’t even consider this thorki. This is just Thor and Loki, brothers at the end of the universe itself, choosing family over everything else that has ripped them apart for millennia.

And so this one little, mostly monochromatic, barely detailed panel lives rent-free in my head and makes me fucking insane.

***Slight Spoiler for Thor Love and Thunder*** I missed Loki’s presence  sooooo much!! To me, a Thor movie isn’t as exciting without our mischievous overlord…but these Korg moments made me smile. What a sweet, wonderful way to make a rock child. Bless Taika Waititi for including these moments into the movie.

What I didn't like?

Stage four cancer and she looked so fresh like do they know how bad stage four cancer looks especially when she's getting chemo?

Valkyrie ..why was she even in the movie? She had better screentime in Ragnarok

Sif was almost dying and lost an arm but that was a joke?

Overdone goat screams, it stopped being funny after three tries.

That scene where Thor is inside the cage with the kids and is trying to cheer them up but instead starts talking shit and worries them even more and can't even make a proper motivational speech, to a couple of Asgardian kids, and then starts freaking out when they start hugging him and asking for help - that is NOT Thor, that is one of the moments we see how poorly written Thor is in this movie. They have made a complete mockery of his character.

Don't know how they can come out from this, to be honest.

That’s right.

You also worked on those pages, of course — what was it like when you’d be on set and that would happen?

We worked on them together. He threw out his own work! We really sat in rooms and Zooms together for months and months and months, and then we would get there, and we would rehearse it, and — “throw it out” is the wrong word. I mean, he does throw it out, but the core is still there. I would say he pluses — he can’t help but always try to plus. I can’t imagine Taika is ever going to write something and be like, “It’s done and we’ll shoot it.”

So how would he approach that part of the process?

There were different versions. We would read what we were shooting the next day around a table, and it would be like, idea, idea, idea. I would sit with my laptop and listen and just close my Heimdall eyes and write something and then turn my computer around to him and say, “This?” So that was one version of it. Another version is in the first blocking rehearsal, things would start to change, and I would just have my computer and be typing with one hand, following Taika around as he moved things and changed things. There’s a bit that is not in the film, but it was Hemsworth and Pratt walking through this trench, and I just remember it was such an out-of-body experience, as I’m like walking behind Taika, Chris and Chris with a laptop in this literal trench that they built that looks like you’re in a planet. And I’m just like, “What the fuck? How did I get here?” It was very bizarre.And then I would say, the third version of the way that Taika directs is he literally stands behind the monitor, and I would stand next to him, and it would just be shouting things. I was never shouting. I would always pitch to Taika and then Taika would choose what he liked. But I had a lot of time where I had a mini monitor next to Taika, and we were just writing the movie almost in real time as they were shooting it. So there were all different kinds of versions of putting together this film. Taika’s brain just moves at a pace that should not be allowed. It’s like, the way that he kind of thinks or looks at things and like his capacity to kind of play, but also have total control is really astounding.

Was there ever a time where you felt like you had accidentally rewritten yourselves into a corner based on other stuff that you’d shot before?

No, I think that Taika and I were a good team, in that I was kind of a person who was there to remind him, “Oh, get this line. Oh, get that.” He was able to lean on me in that and be able to go off in all these different places, knowing that he had a person there who was able to bring it back if it needed to be. When you get into the edit, you know, the whole thing kind of blows up anyway. So I always tried to kind of be there to make sure that the thing that was needed was said. Usually, in a Marvel movie, those are very small things.

okay i just saw love and thunder and i need to get some things out. spoilers alert yk the drill

first of all i’ve said this in the tags a couple reblogs back but MY GOD don’t go see this movie if you want to see an action movie or worst a serious movie. this is not what this is. idk about you, but when i’m considering paying 15 bucks to see a movie i kinda want to know what i need to be looking forward to and L&T gave exactly what it said: an unserious, ridiculous, weird, corny ass lovecom that will allow you to turn your brain off for a little less than two hours and have fun

literally they described the plot as “imagine if you put a bunch of kids in the writers room, asked what they wanted to see in a thor movie, and then said yes to everything” and that’s what we got! why are you having a fit on twitter!!!!!!

ANYWAYS besides that it was really fun!! the room i was in was very open to the corny kiwi humor, everyone was laughing the whole time and even when it got cringey it was more funny than annoying and we all had a great time (im thinking of the “fake bad acting” choice in the directing but again i’m familiar with taika’s work so it didn’t bother me but some might find it upsetting)

AGAINNN its not the height of cinema and its not supposed to be. would i have liked more character development for val? yes absolutely this was my main hope so im a bit disappointed. but also i understand that there are more thor movies coming up and this one was about thor and jane and bringing closure to what we knew had been a serious/long-term relationship that just?? ended off screen suddenly. so i am hoping val is getting that next time and im not too worried about it

like hello the second face-off with the villain was insane???? christian bale is a crazy talented actor and i loved the video game-ish vibes it had (although ik my friend was kinda put off by it) but it was actually one of my favorite scenes

actually yk what the thematic of love was refreshing as hell… the fact that the antagonist had it against selfish and unresponsive gods rang with me and it was nice to see thor acknowledging that although he had very much been like that, he’s working on himself to be better

choosing to admit you’re defeated and just choose to pass ur last moment with your loved ones rather than fighting a loosing battle? how the movie treats important and heavy themes such as a loved one fighting a deadly illness, wanting the best for them and yet NEVER making choices for them… choosing love over hate always

again some people have HATED the last scene but guys? although i was not expecting it, it actually makes sm sense for thor. all he’s ever wanted was to take care of smn/someone, but the position he was given (crown prince then king) was just too much pressure on him and he just knew too well how utterly unfit he was for the job, and well although he could have grown into it, it was just not in the cards for him with the whole thanos disaster/ensuing depression

with this new development, he gets that AND stops this long cycle of loneliness and self-doubt he’s had going on for literal years. here he can’t doubt that he’s loved and needed, cause he now has a literal child in his custody that very definitely both loves and needs him and he CANNOT doubt that and thats so good for him and his confidence i think. also that single interaction was so fucking cute and natural are you kidding me??????

bonus points for the fact that it also allows him to grieve in a more healthy way because again, he can’t take care of a kid if he can’t take care of himself. no more brusso brothers alcoholism bs we’re in a healthy household now!

THIS WAS A MOVIE FOR KIDS!!!!! and that was so wholesome. yeah it’s a movie for kids and by kids too since the actors’ kids were all included both in the writing and monsters designing process (and featured in the movie too!) and i think it’s great that little kids out there can watch this movie and go huh i too can be a hero! it’s alright if i’m scared and it’s normal but i can do anything! and thats what heroes comics are about babeyyyy

Sometimes he still couldn't believe that the unthinkable had happened, that Adriana was gone. Just a week ago they were happily planning for their wedding day and now she was gone. His bride-to-be was gone. He remembered vividly how it felt as he saw the Kree ship with her in it exploded before his eyes. The pain in his heart was unbearable. He had screamed her name so loud that his throat hurt. He remembered falling on his knees to the ground and the flood of tears falling from his eyes. He remembered the empty and hollow feeling in his chest afterwards as Kamala, Kate and Clint all gathered around him and hugged him. He couldn't believe he could experience the same feeling twice. This time it was different though. He didn't have her body to hold, to touch one last time before he said good bye. She was just.. gone.. as if she never existed.

The battle against the Kree in New York ended not long after the ship with Adriana in it exploded. The Avengers and SHIELD agents had successfully defeated them. Hundreds of Kree had been killed in battle. Many of their sentries were destroyed. However, the large mother ship had successfully escaped. The win for people of New York was not without sacrifices as hundreds of humans also perished in battle, including Adriana. Thankfully, all the other Avengers were safe.

The Kree also attacked other major cities on earth including Washington D.C, Los Angeles, Moscow, Paris, London, Berlin, Shang Hai, Sydney, Sao Paulo, Tokyo and Jakarta. But due to the preparations that people of earth had done for months, the Kree was also successfully defeated on all of those cities and civilian casualties were successfully minimized.

Despite their apparent win, the Avengers was still on high alert. Carol, who came mid battle and helped defeat a large number of the Kree and sentries, informed them that despite their defeat, the upper ranks of Kree military survived the battle and were all back in Hala, most likely plotting for their next attack. And so the Avengers needed a new plan. It was something they were going to talk about in a meeting that afternoon. Bucky didn't want to come. He would much rather stay in his room and grieve. But he knew his friends needed him. And he wanted to know how he could avenge the death of Adriana. If there was a chance that he could avenge the death of Adriana, he wouldn't hesitate to take it.

Suddenly he heard the sound of footsteps approaching him. His shoulders tensed and his jaw clenched as he slowly turned toward the sound.

"You!" a woman with long flowing dark hair with strands of silver and familiar wide brown eyes pointed at him.

"You killed them both!" she yelled as she came closer to Bucky.

Bucky's heart plummeted as he realized who the woman was. She looked exactly like Adriana except older. He realized she was her mother, Maria Weaver. A young man with the same wide eyes but short dark hair stood next to her. He must be Adriana's brother, John Weaver Jr, Bucky thought.

Bucky turned toward them both, head hung and slowly said. "Mrs. Weaver, I'm.. I'm really sorry.."

"Sorry isn't going to bring them back!" She spat, her eyes looked at him full of hatred.

Bucky looked down sadly as Mrs.Weaver came closer. She then knelt on the ground in front of Adriana's memorial. Her shoulders sagged as she touched her daughter's tombstone.

"Adriana.. dear.. how could this happen to you? You're not supposed to go before me.." she sobbed. Her son knelt beside her and put his hand on her shoulder.

"Mom, she was a hero. Like dad, she died a hero. We should be proud." John said, trying to make his mother feel better.

"She wasn't supposed to be a hero. She was supposed to have a normal life, have a good career, marry someone who can make her safe, have children and grow old and die in peace. She didn't deserve to die like this." Mrs.Weaver said, her voice shook.

"Mrs.Weaver, I'm.. I'm really sorry.. is there anything I can do to.. to make it up to you somehow?" Bucky asked slowly, heart pounding hard in his chest.

"No, you've made enough damage in our life." she said coldly as she stood up and turned to Bucky.

"Do you have any idea the suffering we had to go through after you killed my husband?" she looked up at him and Bucky felt his heart dropped to his stomach.

"And now you've made us suffer again. If anyone deserves to die, it's not them, it's you. You have too much blood in your hands." Mrs.Weaver said coldly as she stared at him. Her words felt like a thousand knives pierced through his heart. He felt lightheaded and weak and he dropped to his knees and hugged her legs.

"I'm sorry Mrs.Weaver.. I'm sorry.. I'm so so sorry.. for everything." he sobbed as he continued to hug her legs tightly.

"Get off me." Mrs.Weaver said as she kicked Bucky so he was forced to let her legs go.

Bucky continued to sob on the ground. His knees and hands on the ground as he begged for her forgiveness.

"Mom.. it's not all his fault." John said as he put his arms around her shoulders.

"It is! He clearly killed your dad. And if only he didn't start dating Adriana, she would've been alive! She wouldn't have been involved with the Avengers. She would've been safe with us!" she spat.

Her words hung in the air like a death sentence to Bucky. He realized the damage he had made to Adriana and her family. If he knew Adriana was going to die once he decided to be with her, he would've left her. He would've left her to be with someone else. It seemed his life was cursed. Anyone who came in contact with him was cursed to die. It was probably better if he died. Then no one else would be hurt. No one else would die because of him. Bucky stayed on the ground as he continued to cry, his body shook in grief. He couldn't stop once he started.

"Mom.. come on.. let's just go." John said, pulling his mother's shoulder gently.

"You owe us two lives, Mr.Barnes." Mrs.Weaver said coldly. She then turned around and left with her son, leaving Bucky crying on the ground.

It seemed a long time that he cried. Eventually he felt weak from all the crying so he laid on his side in front of Adriana's memorial. His body curled in on himself like a baby in the womb and his hand laid on top of Adriana's memorial. He closed his eyes and prayed to God so He could just take his life. There was no other reason for him to live, why prolong his life? Suddenly he felt a warm hand touching his shoulder.

"Buck? Come on, get up." Sam said gently as he tried to pull his shoulders up.

"Sam?" Bucky opened his eyes and saw Sam's warm brown eyes staring at him in concern.

"Everything's gonna be okay, Buck. Adriana is at peace now." Sam said gently.

"I know.. Her mother just came." Bucky said as he sat up and wiped his face with his hands, trying to clean the tear tracks on his cheek.

"Oh, she did? What did she say?" Sam asked, his eyebrows furrowed.

"She said I owe her two lives and that I deserve to die, not them." Bucky answered with no emotion in his voice.

"Oh Buck, you know that's not true. You don't deserve to die." Sam said as he hugged Bucky tight.

"Maybe I do. I have too much blood in my hands." Bucky said, peeling himself away from Sam's hug. He then stood up and patted his dirty knees.

"It seems I'm cursed, Sam. Anyone in contact with me dies. It's better if I die." he said, his eyes empty of any emotion.

"Buck.. do you have any idea how stupid you sound?" Sam said, standing up and putting his hand on Bucky's shoulder.

"Yeah.. I am stupid! Therefore it's better that I die. No one's gonna miss my stupid self!" Bucky yelled and moved Sam's hand from his shoulder harshly.

"Buck.. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings." Sam's shoulder sagged as he stared at Bucky.

Bucky sighed. "I know.. I'm sorry too."

"It's just I.. I.. I don't know what to do. I'm lost, Sam. What am I gonna do without her?" Bucky asked, tears started to well up in his eyes again.

"Buck.. you still have me. You have the girls, Clint, Bruce, Wanda and all the other Avengers. Sam said, patting Bucky's shoulder gently.

"Yeah.. I know." Bucky sniffled and looked down to the ground.

"You'll always have us, Buck. Now come on. The meeting with Carol is gonna start soon. I heard Thor is gonna come too." Sam said, pulling Bucky's shoulder gently as he tried to get Bucky to come with him.

"I.. umm.. I need sometime alone. I don't think I can make it to today's meeting." Bucky said, running his hand on his hair. His meeting with Mrs.Weaver opened a painful wound in his heart. He didn't think he could deal meeting others just yet.

"Okay.. just.. don't do anything stupid." Sam said. "We still need you buddy. Okay?" Sam continued as he looked at Bucky with pleading eyes.

"Yeah. I'll see you later, Sam." Bucky said and he clapped Sam's shoulder. He then left Sam and headed back toward the parking lot of the memorial. He needed to go away for a bit and clear his head.

After the attack he stayed at the Avengers compound. He didn't think he could deal staying at Adriana's apartment alone. His friends had taken turns in accompanying him. They realized he was in a vulnerable state and didn't want him to hurt himself. So they almost never left him alone. Sam even stayed in his room at night and accompanied him as he went to sleep every night. After a whole week of being followed everywhere except the bathroom, Bucky finally had enough and asked them all to please leave him alone. His friends were reluctant at first but he assured them that he wasn't going to kill himself, he just needed some time alone. So that day was the first time he finally had some time alone after losing Adriana. He didn't expect to meet Mrs.Weaver, so he thought he was going to be okay. He just wanted to visit Adriana's grave and prayed for her. But perhaps it was a bad idea. It seemed his friends was right in wanting to accompany him because he did have suicidal thoughts again.

As he walked to the parking lot Mrs.Weaver's words kept ringing in his head.

"If anyone deserves to die, it's not them, it's you.. it's you.. it's me.. I deserve to die." Bucky thought as he arrived at where his motorcycle was parked. He put on his helmet and turned his motorcycle engine to life and rode it to the city. He cranked the throttle of his motorcycle and rode it back to Adriana's apartment with careless abandon, swerving quickly left to right as he weaved through the crowded New York streets, his hand almost never touched the brakes. He secretly wished he would just get killed in an accident, but his quick reflexes saved him from many potential crashes that day, something he wished he didn't have.

Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn, New York - July 2024

Bucky put his hands in his pocket as he walked on Brooklyn Bridge. He had parked his motorcycle back at Adriana's apartment and decided to come to the bridge to get some fresh air.

The Brooklyn bridge was a memorable bridge for him. He remembered going for walks on the bridge when he was young back in the 40s, either alone or with Steve or with some girl. Even though the bridge was almost always crowded, he still loved walking there and enjoy the view. Especially early in the morning where it was less crowded and the sunrise could be seen, rising beautifully behind the skyline.

He stopped at the edge of the bridge and looked down. The pedestrian part of the bridge was elevated on top of the part for vehicles so he could see many cars and other vehicles passed him down below. He looked to his left and his right and saw no one in his vicinity. It was unusually rather empty at that time of day. He pulled himself up to stand on top of the railing of the bridge. It would be easy to kill himself now. He could just jump down below and let himself run over by cars. Or..he could try and walk a little further to the middle of the bridge, and slowly walk to the edge of the bridge through the ledge connecting the middle part of the bridge to the edge, then jump to the water below. Either way would work, he thought.

His mind replayed the words Mrs.Weaver had said. "If anyone deserves to die, it's not them, it's you. You have too much blood in your hands. Too much blood in my hands.. there have been too much blood in my hands.."

"Well, not anymore.." he said to himself as he lifted his right leg and prepared to jump.

"Bucky!" Suddenly he heard someone calling his name. He put his right leg back on the railing and swung his arms on his sides as he tried to balance himself. Once he was standing steadily on the railing, he turned his head to the left, trying to find the source of the voice.

"Mr.Barnes. Is that really you?" The voice asked.

Bucky turned his head around and looked down. A young boy around twelve years old looked up at him in awe. He had blonde hair with a bowl cut, blue eyes and a smile that reminded him of Steve.

"Oh my God! It is you! James Bucky Barnes, The Winter Soldier! How cool!" The boy exclaimed excitedly. The boy was wearing a t-shirt with his picture on it. Well, the picture of him as the Winter Soldier with his signature long hair, black mask and his old metal arm.

"Uh.. yeah. Hi there kid." Bucky waved awkwardly. He turned around and jumped down back to the pedestrian area and clapped the kid's shoulder.

"Don't call me the Winter Soldier again. I'm White Wolf now." Bucky said to the boy.

"Ooh..okay. What were you doing Mr.White Wolf?" the boy asked.

"I.. uh.. I was chasing a bad guy and he jumped down below and got into a car." Bucky lied.

"Oh I see.. well I hope you'll find him." The boy said.

"Yeah.. I hope so too." Bucky said.

"Anyway, I'm sorry to bother you but..do you mind to take a picture with me? As you can see I'm a huge fan." The boy smiled as he pointed at his t-shirt.

"Oh..okay..sure." Bucky said.

The boy whooped in delight and pulled out his cellphone from his pocket. Bucky smiled awkwardly at the cellphone's camera as they took a selfie.

"Thank you so much Mr.White Wolf!" The boy said as he put his cellphone back in his pocket.

"No problem, kid." Bucky smiled, his wounded heart felt a little better somehow.

"By the way, I want to thank you Mr.White Wolf, for putting yourself out there and protect us. Without you and your Avengers friends, we're probably already gone by now eaten by aliens." The boy said making Bucky laugh.

"The Kree don't eat humans." Bucky said matter-of-factly.

"Yeah well.. you get what I mean, right Mr.White Wolf?" The boy said, winking at him.

"Yeah I do, kid. What's your name by the way?" Bucky asked.

"Steve." The boy smiled. "After Steve Rogers, 'cause my mom is a huge fan. She hoped I would become a huge fan of his as well but.. I don't know.. I feel I like you better." The boy shrugged and Bucky felt warmth in his heart that he had not felt in a while.

"Well..thank you kid, for liking me better. Too bad Steve isn't here to hear that." Bucky chuckled.

"Where is he by the way, if you don't mind me asking? Is he really on the dark side of the moon like what some of the rumors out there say?" Steve asked.

"What?! No.. he is definitely not on the moon." Bucky laughed.

"Well okay then. If you see him could you tell him thank you as well." Steve asked.

"Sure, buddy." Bucky smiled and clapped Steve's shoulder.

"Alright, I better get going. It's really nice to meet you Mr.White Wolf." Steve smiled.

"Just call me Bucky." Bucky smiled.

"Okay, Bucky. I hope I'll see you around again." Steve said.

"Yeah. I hope so too." Bucky said.

"Well, thanks and bye." Steve said, waving his hand a little.

"No, thank you." Bucky said as he pulled Steve for a brief hug, surprising Steve a little.

Steve then left, leaving Bucky alone on the bridge as he felt the wound on his heart healed a little. He looked toward the New York skyline and a memory resurfaced in his mind.

"Steve, who else did you fight today?" Bucky asked as he looked at Steve's bruised eye and bloody lips.

"No one." Steve said, looking away from Bucky sheepishly.

"Steve.. come on! Why are you always like this. Those bruises and cuts don't just appear on their own." Bucky said, sighing.

"Okay, fine. I caught some boys trying to bully this little kid back at an alley on Henry St. I couldn't just stand there." Steve shrugged.

"Did you beat them?" Bucky asked, his eyebrows furrowed.

"Well.. I hit one of them on their nose and distracted them so that the kid could get away." Steve said.

"And then they beat you up huh?" Bucky asked, studying him.

"Yeah. But it's fine. I just got some bruises and minor cuts. No big deal." Steve said but then he winced and put his hand on his chest.

"We should get you checked. Come on." Bucky said.

"No.. no.. I'm fine." Steve shook his head.

"Steve.. sometimes I wonder if you're deliberately looking for fights." Bucky shook his head in disbelief.

"I swear I'm not." Steve chuckled.

"Yeah, you just don't know when to stop, do you." Bucky said, staring at Steve with a soft look on his face.

"You know I can do it all day." Steve winked.

"Yeah buddy, you can. You never give up. I gotta give you that." Bucky chuckled and clapped Steve's back making him winced in pain.

"Okay, we should really get you checked." Bucky said as he put his arms around Steve and guided him to leave Brooklyn bridge.

"Yeah. Okay." Steve finally agreed and nodded.

Bucky smiled as he remembered talking to Steve on Brooklyn bridge that day, about a year before the war started and he was deployed. How things had changed so much since that time. How much he missed him.

It seemed God really didn't want him to die just yet. Meeting little Steve reminded him of his best friend. Steve would never give up on life, no matter how hard it seemed, he was sure of that. People out there needed him. Even if he didn't have anyone, he couldn't give up on those people. Yes he did have too much blood in his hands. But this time he was fighting and killing for the good side. So he shouldn't give up.

Bucky took a deep breath and let it go. Once he did, he felt so much better. He decided to go back to the Avengers compound. He might still make it to the meeting.

The Avengers Compound, New York - July 2024

When Bucky arrived at the Avengers Compound the meeting was just over. However, he found some of the Avengers still hanging out at the meeting room. Sam, Bruce, Clint, and the girls plus Wanda were still in the meeting room. He also saw Carol and Thor and a little girl he didn't know.

"Uh.. hi guys.. sorry I'm late." He greeted his friends as he came in through the door.

"Bucky! I didn't think you would come back so soon." Sam's face lit up as he saw Bucky coming in.

"Yeah.. I wanted to see if I could help. But it seems the meeting is over?" Bucky asked.

"Yeah, we just finished a couple of minutes ago." Sam said as he approached Bucky and stood in front of him.

"You okay, pal?" Sam asked in a low voice, not wanting the others to hear him.

"Yeah, better thanks." Bucky nodded.

"Good." Sam smiled.

"Hey there Bucky." Carol greeted him and walked toward him.

"Carol. How are you?" Bucky extended his hand and Carol shook it. He noticed she had long hair again. The last time Bucky saw her she had short mohawk style hair.

"Good thanks. How are you doing?" Carol asked, her eyes full of concern.

"I'm holding on.. I guess." Bucky sighed.

"Good.. if it's any consolation, I've gotten some intel that said there's a rift in the Kree's military upper ranks. Looks like their defeat divided them somehow. So I suspect it will be awhile before they try to attack us again." Carol explained.

"Well, that's good news." Bucky said.

"Yeah. The fact that we defeated one of their top elite team scared them I think." Carol said.

"Their top elite team?" Bucky asked.

"Yeah. We've killed three members of their top military task-force, the Star Force. All of them I happened to know back in the day. Including my own mentor." Carol sighed as she referred to the three Krees Bucky and his friends defeated during the battle on the grounds of the Avengers Compound.

"You knew them?" Bucky asked curiously.

"Yup. I was part of the team. It's sad. I used to think of them as my friends.. but now.. they're literally my enemies." Carol said with a slight sadness in her eyes.

"Do you know why one of them took Adriana? He could have just killed her but instead he took her with him." Bucky asked.

"Yeah. The Kree who took her was my former mentor, Yon-Rogg. I honestly don't have any idea why he would take Adriana. He used to be one of those Kree who would take orders and execute them flawlessly without questioning anything you know. What I think is that he probably saw them losing and was planning to use Adriana as a hostage, to give them bargaining power." Carol said.

"That makes sense." Bucky nodded.

"Yeah. But since he exploded they really have nothing now. We really have given them a run for their money." Carol smiled but then stopped herself as she realized what she just said.

"I'm sorry Bucky.. I didn't mean.." she said but Bucky cut her off.

"It's fine, Carol." Bucky said.

"Anyway, looks like we can breathe a sigh of relief for now." Sam chimed in.

"Yeah, but we still need to be on our guard. They won't give up so easily." Carol said.

"Well, we'll be ready if they ever want to try to attack us again." Sam said.

"Yeah. It's amazing the amount of preparation you have guys have done. Without it I don't think we would have won." Carol said.

"It's thanks to you too, Carol. Without intel from you we wouldn't have known they were coming." Sam stated.

"Well, we definitely work well as a team." Carol said, smiling and Sam and Bucky nodded.

"Anyway, sorry I can't stay long. Just heard The Guardians are facing some tough enemies out there near Vormir. I gotta go." Carol said, referring to The Guardians of The Galaxy whom she worked with from time to time.

"Thanks Carol. Let me know if you've heard anything about the Kree. Or.. you know.. any other potential threats toward earth." Sam said.

"Roger that, Cap." Carol winked making Sam and Bucky chuckle.

"See you guys." Carol said. She turned around, said good bye to the others and walked toward a window and flew out toward the sky.

"I hate it when they do that. And that includes you, Sam." Bucky said making Sam chuckle.

They then walked toward where Thor and Wanda were sitting. They were sitting on chairs by the meeting table. A little girl of about ten years of age who had dark hair pulled back in a pony tail sat on a chair next to Thor, she was busy doodling on a paper as Thor chatted with Wanda.

"Hey Thor, Wanda." Bucky greeted them.

"Bucky, how are you mate?" Thor asked as he extended his hand.

"I'm okay, I guess." Bucky shook Thor's hand then turned his attention to Wanda.

"Bucky, Sam said Adriana's mom came?" Wanda asked, her eyes filled with concern as she reached out to touch Bucky's hand.

"Umm.. yeah. She came to her memorial." Bucky said. As he felt Wanda's touch he felt warmth in his heart and somehow the darkness he had felt for the past week was ligthened somewhat. He stared at Wanda as she smiled at him and realized Wanda was trying to manipulate his feelings. He jerked his hand from Wanda's touch and startled her.

"Wanda, I'm sorry. I know what you're trying to do, but please don't. I can handle it myself, thanks." Bucky said.

"I'm sorry, Bucky. I just wanted to help. I know how you feel." Wanda said with sadness in her eyes.

"Yeah, I appreciate it. But I'd much rather deal with it myself. You know." Bucky said.

"Of course, I'm sorry again." Wanda said as she stood up and patted Bucky's shoulder.

"It's fine, Wanda. Thanks." Bucky smiled at her.

"Well if you'll excuse me. The girls said they wanted to take me to a hair salon today. We're having a girl's day out to celebrate our win against the Kree." Wanda said, smiling back.

"Okay. Have a good time." Bucky smiled and Wanda left.

"I gotta go too. Rhodey couldn't make it to today's meeting so I have to fill him in on what's been going on. See you guys later." Sam said.

"Bye, Sam." Thor waved a little.

"Later, pal." Bucky said nodding his head at Sam. Sam nodded then left the meeting room, leaving Bucky alone with Thor and the little girl. Bucky looked around the room and noticed Clint, Bruce and the girls had already left as well. He sat on the chair next to Thor and beckoned his head toward the little girl.

"So, is she your daughter?" Bucky asked.

"Yes, this is my adopted daughter, Love." Thor said, smiling as he put his arms around Love.

"Love, say hi to Uncle Bucky here." Thor said.

"Hi Uncle Bucky." Love said, looking up at Bucky briefly then turned her attention back to her drawing.

"By the way, I'm sorry for your loss.." Thor said, staring at Bucky with his brows furrowed.

"Yeah, thanks Thor." Bucky sighed.

"I know how it feels." Thor said and Bucky nodded.

"Do you have anyone else now? I mean like, family?" Thor asked and Bucky shook his head.

"Parents?" Thor asked.

"My mother died due to an illness a long time ago. And my father died following an accident at military camp a long long time ago." Bucky said.

"I see. My mother was killed by a dark elf and my father was just.. old I guess." Thor said.

"How about brother or sister?" Thor continued asking.

"I had a sister. But she also died a couple of years ago." Bucky said, remembering Rebecca his little sister whom he found out was already gone by the time he was free from his Winter Soldier programming.

"Yeah. Both my brother and sister also had died." Thor said.

"Best friend?" Thor continued asking.

"I honestly don't know where Steve is. But I suspect he's gone also. He was really old by the time he came and gave Sam his Shield." Bucky said.

"Oh yes, of course. You now have other best friends though, right?" Thor asked.

"Yeah, Sam's been great and everyone else too." Bucky smiled.

"Good. 'Cause I also lost my best friends but have gained new ones." Thor smiled.

"Girlfriend?" Bucky took his turn to ask Thor back.

"She died just recently." Thor sighed.

Bucky was surprised at how similar Thor's situation to him was.

"Jane died?" Bucky asked in surprise.

"Yeah she did. She had cancer." Thor said, pain apparent in his eyes.

"I'm.. I'm really sorry to hear that." Bucky said.

"It's okay. I know she's happy in Valhalla now. And I'm sure your girlfriend is also happy on earth's heaven now." Thor smiled.

"Yeah, I'm sure she is." Bucky smiled.

"How do you keep yourself going everyday? If you don't mind me asking." Bucky asked.

"Well, I have Love now. She needs me. But, as you know, I was also quite depressed a while back and was in a bad shape. But I realized that life must go on, and the world needs me, you know. I couldn't just sit back and be miserable for the rest of my life." Thor said.

"Yeah. That's true." Bucky nodded.

"Yeah, so I picked myself up and got into shape and went out there throughout the galaxy to help anyone who are in trouble." Thor smiled.

"Sounds like a good life to live, living for other people." Bucky smiled.

"Absolutely. And now I have her to raise." Thor said, patting Love's shoulder.

"It's been quite a challenge having a kid but it's also completely satisfying, if you know what I mean." Thor said.

Bucky nodded. "I guess, yeah."

"Maybe you should adopt a kid too." Thor suggested excitedly.

"Oh, no. I don't know if I can.. if I have what it takes to raise a child. It's a big responsibility." Bucky said shaking his head.

"It is. Well, maybe if not now someday in the future." Thor said, winking at him.

"Yeah, maybe." Bucky said doubtfully.

His heart ached as he thought about having children. He had imagined having children with Adriana, a boy and a girl. The boy would look exactly like him and the girl like Adriana. But all of that were just fantasy to him. There was no way he could have children with other women. No one could replace Adriana for him.

"If not children maybe pets? I have two goats and they're amazing even if they scream a lot." Thor said making Bucky chuckle.

"Screaming goats?" Bucky asked, laughing.

"Yup. They're awesome." Thor said.

"Well, Adriana had two cats. I gave them to her friend though." Bucky said.

"Well, you can take them back and take care of them. Adriana probably would have wanted that." Thor said.

"Yeah, you're right. I think.. I think I might just do that. Cats I can handle." Bucky said, smiling.

"Good.. good." Thor smiled, clapping Bucky's shoulder.

Bucky felt grateful for his Avengers friends. He didn't think they would be so thoughtful and caring toward him. He also just realized how much similarities he had with them, especially with Thor and Wanda. They also lost family, friends and the love of their lives. Yet there they still were, helping the world as best they could. Bucky could certainly follow in their footsteps. Yes, that was going to be his life's purpose now. Even if he didn't have Adriana by his side, he would be alright as long as he could be of service to others.

Kree Mother Ship - July 2024

Adriana's eyes widened as she saw the missile coming at the ship she was in. She closed her eyes and prepared to die and he felt the Kree hugged her tight. When she opened her eyes she was surprised to see that she wasn't dead yet. She was sitting on the ground on a raised circular platform. There was a wide glass window in front of her and three Krees were behind it, staring at her in shock. The yellow eyed Kree was still hugging her tight. She pushed him away, startling him and he let her go but kept his grip on her arm. He stood up and pulled her up with him.

"Let me go!" Adriana yelled at the Kree and tried to get free but the Kree held her arm tight.

"What do you want with me!? Let me go!" Adriana screamed.

"Calm down. I don't want to hurt you." The Kree said, looking down at her with a strange look on his face.

"Colonel Yon-Rogg?" One of the Kree from behind the window approached them and looked at both of them in confusion.

"Lieutenant, prepare a holding cell for her. I'm taking her as hostage." Yon-Rogg said to the Kree.

"Hostage, Colonel?" the Kree asked.

"Yes, can't you see we're losing? We need a leverage. She'll be our leverage." Yon-Rogg said firmly as he walked down from the platform, dragging Adriana with him.

"Very well, Colonel." the Kree said then he walked in front of them and Yon-Rogg followed him with Adriana walking on his side.

Adriana looked around, heart pounding hard. She realized she was in the Kree's mother ship. She could see SHIELD's ships and Riri's robot armies outside the window fighting the Kree's small ships and sentries. They apparently had teleportation technology and that was what saved her from the missile hit on the Kree's ship. They had teleported to the Kree's mother ship right before the missile hit the small ship she was in.

They walked toward the holding cell, passing several more Krees. They stared at her in confusion as they passed but they didn't say anything, they just bowed their heads at the yellow-eyed Kree who was holding her arm. He was apparently a Colonel, which explained the way others reacted around him.

After passing several rooms and chambers, they got into an elevator. The elevator brought them down several floors. When the elevator door was opened, she saw an empty hallway where the walls were darker than it was on the upper floor. The Lieutenant guided them to a room and opened it by pushing a button next to it. A small room of about 40 square feet in size welcomed them. The room consisted of a small single bed and a toilet and a sink across from it. It had a small window located on the side of the bed where she could see the Kree's ships and SHIELD ships flying around, shooting laser beams at each other .

"Lieutenant Vagg-Chell, inform Captain Sil-Dwehn to call all our men back. We're withdrawing and we'll go back to Hala." Yon-Rogg said.

"Colonel." Lieutenant Vagg-Chell saluted him, turned around and left, leaving Adriana alone with the yellow-eyed Kree.

He pulled Adriana by her arm into the room but before he had the chance to close the door of the room, Adriana immediately pried her arm from him and attacked him. She kicked his stomach and punched his face, startling him and she quickly ran away from him. She wasn't sure where she was going but maybe she could somehow teleport back to earth. So she ran back toward the elevator, intending to somehow go back to that circular room.

She could hear footsteps behind her as she ran. She glanced back as she ran and saw the yellow-eyed Kree running after her. She looked back to the front and ran quicker. She almost reached the elevator but then she felt herself flying and she hit the door of the elevator. The yellow-eyed Kree had shot her with an energy beam. Panting and heaving on the ground, Adriana tried to get up. Her jaw and chest hurt after they hit the elevator door. She then felt her arm pulled back harshly and she was being turned around from the floor.

"You're just like her.. running away from me all the time. Why is that I wonder." the yellow-eyed Kree said as he caressed Adriana's cheek gently with his thumb, an awed yet deranged look on his face.

"You look so much like her." the yellow-eyed Kree continued with a slight sadness in his eyes.

"Like who?" Adriana asked. She thought she could keep a conversation going as she tried to think of ways of escaping him.

"Like Una, the love of my life." the yellow-eyed Kree said.

"What happened to her?" Adriana asked as she studied the Kree's face. Aside from the yellow eyes, he could pass as a normal human, with white but slightly tanned skin and short brown hair.

"Oh she died.. a long time ago." he said as he put his hands on both her arms and pulled her up.

As soon as both of them got up Adriana tried to kick him again but the Kree caught her leg and threw her back to the ground.

"Don't try to escape, you have nowhere to go." the Kree said, holding her arms down with both his hands and spoke very close to her face, scaring her.

"Now come on, let's get you settled. If you don't try to escape, I won't hurt you." the Kree said, pulling her up and dragged her back toward the holding cell.

Adriana followed reluctantly as she tried to hold the pain on her jaw, chest and back. As they reached the holding cell, the Kree pushed her into the cell but before he got the chance to close the door, Adriana quickly kicked his groin and punched his face. She then hit him on multiple points on his body, making him fall to his knees. She was about to give him a hard blow to the head but the Kree pulled out his energy beam gun and shot it toward Adriana making her fly toward the sink. The back of her head hit the sink hard and everything went black.

THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER (2022)  ★★★★

My review (slight spoilers!!!): 

For once, I feel like Marvel didn’t spoil too much with their trailer (unlike with Doctor Strange a couple of months ago) and I was certainly surprised with the film, both for better and worse as the trailer does feel a bit misleading when it comes to which characters are actually important. It perfectly captures Waititi’s comedic style and personally, I felt more drawn to this film than its predecessor Thor: Ragnarok (2017). 

I’ve never been much of a Thor fan but Love and Thunder definitely made me like his character way more. The character that caught my attention the most was definitely the God Butcher as Christian Bale does a fantastic job portraying him in a fearsome manner. His portrayal alone made me want this film to be longer and I wish it was a dark comedy instead to better suit the villain. 

The comedy in many MCU films but especially the last two Thor ones is one of the main things that draw me in but sometimes I feel like the villains are lacking because of that. Many films, Love and Thunder included, introduce high-stake villains and situations but then water it down by adding too much lightheartedness, and after that scene in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) as well as the final two Avengers, it can feel a bit disappointing. The film also deals with some less cheerful topics and even though the overuse of comedy can help deal with that, some things felt brushed over too quickly. 

The writing was still very fun and it felt a little bit less predictable than most other Marvel films (or is that just me?) and I had a great time watching. It felt like a nice start and finish to many things in the cinematic universe and it made me excited to see where everything is heading next. Once again, definitely needed to be a bit longer (spoiler alert: maybe they could have finally given Valkyrie a queen if we only had five minutes to spare) but if this isn’t the perfect sit-back-and-have-a-laugh type of film, then I don’t know what is.
