Ok but listening to the Night at the Museum commentary is honestly a treat because it includes:
(From Director Shawn Levy)
- “We look at the 20th Century Fox logo, and I launch into my compulsive need to fill almost the entire movie with a stream of verbiage”
- Originally there wasn’t a reason for Larry to lock himself in the Hall of African Mammals and then have to run across escaping the lions. Levy - “Thinking out of my rear end, I’m like, ‘I’ll tell you why you lock yourself in, because a woolly mammoth appears behind you, shoves you in with his trunk, trying to get in, and you lock the doors so he can’t get in’ and that’s how we came up with this sequence”
- A man in a green unitard had to push Ben Stiller pretending to be said mammoth
- This was the inspiration for Ben Stiller’s bit for the 2006 Oscars
- On the scene at the beginning of the second night with the other night guards telling Larry they’re leaving town: “Take a look at this, see? No tie, no tie
Comes forward, and this was a cut, also done- Ah! Tie! Miraculously the tie is now on. I’m amazed no one ever busted us on that!”
- On the scene where Larry and Nicky find the stolen tablet and go up against the old night guards: “This is a scene
I’m just gonna out ourselves right now: If you actually think about this scene, it is inane. Ok? The kid comes in, there’s a shopping cart of stolen golden goods, conveniently left there. The kid coincidentally picks up the tablet, which coincidentally has the middle piece out of whack, which Ben coincidentally notices and understands the logic thereof. And, by the way, the bad guys, for some reason, don’t advance because Ben’s in the way of their walking path?
I mean it makes absolutely no sense. It also makes no sense that the bad guys wouldn’t want the kid to activate the tablet because if they activate the tablet they get their superhuman strength so they would actually be more formidable. So this is a scene where I’m amazed to this day we get away with it, because there’s so much that doesn’t work.”
- The scene with Larry hugging Attila was improvised
- “And yes if you’re wondering why Sacagawea, Lewis, and Clark are the only behind glass? There is no reason for it. It is totally unfair!”
- Levy promised Ben: “There will not be a happy, touchy-feely dance party! I promise! Cut to
This (Scene of the end dance party). I mean, you could not have a happier dance party then this!”
(From writers Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon)
- Both of them spending the first minutes pretending the commentary is live and that people can phone in.
- “I guess if you’re listening to the screen writer’s commentary of the bonus material? You’ve really gone down-”
“Oh yeah!”
“You are now down in the dustbin of bonus materials”
- Deciding that if you’re listening to the screen writer’s commentary you are: 1) A screen writer 2) a film student 3) pushed the wrong button and wanted the outtakes 4) someone who can’t work a remote
- The important discussion on dropping the ‘The’ from ‘The Night at the Museum’
- “Six weeks of back and forth on whether it’s ‘The Night at the Museum’ or ‘Night at the Museum’”
“A Night at the Museum”
“Three Nights at the Museum, which it actually is.”
- The many talks on Larry’s jacket
- How America Totally Didn’t steal other county’s things to put into the museum and How Of Course all the money goes back to the original countries
- “If people come in, and they see two herbivores that are grazing, it’s like
Nobody wants to see that” – This conversation quickly dissolving into a want for a mummy fighting a dinosaur exhibit
- Fanboying over Dick Van Dyke
- Dick Van Dyke sparking a discussion on Victorian chimney sweeps
- On the Easter Island Head: “So we borrowed it from Easter Island and every time you look at it we (America) send a dollar to Easter Island
For saving their giant god head.”
“We’re so good about that!”
-“That desk? Cost more than the entire film.”
“That desk, the jacket, the three guys who walked out the door, the staircase? We could have made three, you know, Miami’s (their own film)”
- How they’re glad they didn’t cameo, because they’d probably have long days in fur costumes standing still. “And at the end of the day they’re like: ‘Hey, you know, Ben’s had a really long day, could you guys come back tomorrow?’”
- “Hey, can you guys think up something that’s not incredibly expensive?”
- The nightmares of working with monkeys and chimps
- The entire conversation on how they wrote a reason for Ahkmenrah to speak English, and then didn’t explain the Romans also speaking English
- “The wrote Latin, they spoke English with a British accent”
- “Why can’t the Huns speak English? The Romans speak English!”
 “Maaaaagic?”
- Deciding that British English is used for “old timey” things
- On Roosevelt: “For a guy who said as many great things as he did, he had a lot of vacation time”
- “And now these are Mayans, what do they speak?”
“They
Don’t speak English, even though they’re right between the Cowboys and the Romans”
“And they’ve had an infinite amount of time to learn”
- Deciding that Americans use British Accents for authority figures because America has daddy issues
- “You can add a rhino to any movie these days, I guess.”
- The woes of writing scrips on typewriters
- Waiting until the very end of the credits to see if there was anything there, and ending with “Nope no thing at the end.”
“Nothing”

Hiya! I was born in 2003 so I don’t really know what was going on with POTO at that time. Do you know maybe what productions were open? Or the casts? I would love to know what was going on when I was born haha.
